Standard lit class. I had him for the first section he ever taugh as a lecturer, and he did good enough. He may get better. Seems to be interested in the material.
Cool class, Be ready for him to call em as he sees em!
Pretty neat and funny. Smart :p.
he makes discussions tons of fun
Hard class but he's hot
cool prof. if you are cool with him, he will be cool with you. Canadian accent.
I really hated this guy because of his political opinions he threw at us, and the class was a ton of work, but he is energetic and helpful. Talk (B.S.) a lot in class and you'll do well!
Easy teacher, think he knows everything but doesn't know his ass from his elbow.
dude is way cool

There is alot of work. The tests are pretty easy but the paper is not. He grades really hard on papers and there are 4 in the class, one that is worth 30% of your grade. I went to the writing center 3 times and got a C.
Man I really hated him at first, but once I got over his arrogance, and really tried to interperate what he was saying, he still didn't really help me. I had to go to the writing center a lot. If you take him, plan on spending time in the writing center
if you are smart, you will love him. if not, take another course.
The man shot down my hopes of actually doing well in his class. He didn't believe the class could produce a good enuf paper for him. His expectations are overwhelming and he is rarely understanding of difficulties you're having. so disappointed w/ grade
you have to be willing to work if you want a good grade. the tests are easy and he gives you TONS of breaks. talk bullshit, show up, and read what is assigned and you'll do fine.
I really worked hard in this class, but it was well worth it in the end. The first test is tricky, but the other two are a breeze. I think in the end, he may give you the benifit of the doubt, if he knows you tried hard.
Awesome class, not difficult if you attend pay attention, and dont mind working for your grade. You get what you put into this class. Tom is a very entertaining and lively professor and keeps the class interesting. Overall great class. Highly recommend!
Very interesting class. You will learn a lot; esp good if you enjoy literature. Has a wicked sense of humor! There is a lot of work involved and the tests somewhat difficult. If you enjoy reading & writing - this class is a must.
Kinda unclear and you cannot win when writing a paper..he is a very anal person about writing..He was ok but kinda and as*hole like he said he was the beginning of the semester...
Class was cool. Tests arent too bad. Paper is hard. He is pretty cool.
Tom made the class awesome, and I never fell asleep once in his class. The work was difficult, only because I didn't keep up all the way. Overall I did well in the class, the last paper is the easiest. We all went to the bar afterwards.
the song assn. was the coolest thing I have done in college
Where did they find this dude? He love of teaching is apparent in class. He rocks!
Thomas Ulch II is an icon. If he was half as good at halo as he is at teaching, then someday he could beat me.
This man is gold. Funny, enthusiastic, but TOUGH. However, he makes you want to work hard; he's just an overall friendly person, easy to talk to. GREAT smile.
Tom is a great guy! One of the smartest people you will ever meet in your life. He expects you to think and go beneath the surface but it is well worth it. Class is so much fun because he has a great sense of humor. Tom is just awesome; do your work and try and you'll do fine!
He was not as awesome as some of these people are saying. I did well in the class but not with his help. He was rude, obnoxious and very arrogant!!
He is cool. Kind of hard, but dosent baby the idiots. It was at least fun. Big on Fight Club.
Great class. He was available when I needed help. I would take this prof and class again if I had to.
only take this class if you are a liberal. he is out of control.
this guy loves his job! if you are cool with him, he will do anything to help. if you don't come to class, he's got nothing for you. if you try, this is a cool class. if you want to coast, take a different class.
Great class. I like the fact that he told us about all of the stuff we could see outside of class that was related to Native Americas.
Tom rocks, take his class
Tom really really really cares about his students as long as they give a **** about the class. He's a great guy, and I actually developed a friendship with him. He just got more classes added to his roster so take as many as you can. He rocks.

Um...this guy is nuts. I did VERY well in class, but he was of NO assistance. I was an anthro major and took this class, and somehow, found it disappointing. The books were good, but remeber that Native American culture is mad nuts and metaphysical. He
This was a really cool class. Tom is always around to help and the readings are great. I wish this was a higher level class as we had to many people in there that prob. should not be in a University. If you are interested, it's a cool class.
fun guy. We talked about some interesting things. ask him about mascots.
He is very nice and VERY helpful. He's pretty hot as well.
I thought Tom seemed to really enjoy class. He was always laughing and was very helpful. His first exam was hard but not bad if you study. I would say take this class.
He was a pretty cool guy. Lots of extra credit opertunities, which was nice. Only problem with him was that you have to be diligent with coming to class and reading the material. You'll suffer if you don't.
He was funny. Class was cool. A bit hard for a 200 level course, but not too bad.
This guy is very self absorbed is not hot and really got on my nerves. The class was rididulous for a 200 level and I am a 400 level student. DONT TAKE HIM! Unless you like uncaring unhelpful professors. Dont even ask for help.
I absoultely love this class. He is a really cool professor and he makes the class interesting and fun.I learned alot out of the class. All you have to do it make sure you read, go to class, and study. The class wasnt hard, its just like any typical lit class: You have to read!He is so cute, and a wonderful professor! I love him and I love the clas
he is very heplful. gives lots of extra credit. cool class
very cool guy, the kind you wanna hang out with after class and talk to, grading is fair, he expects alot of you, but if you apply your self you will do well. very accomodating, all around a fun professor to be around.
He is a very nice guy and offers a lot of extra credit chances! He does require a lot out of you and if you put the time and effort in to it you will get a good grade! his first two exams are pretty good. If you are Christian and white and proud of it be prepared to feel bashed and a minority!
One of the best teachers at this school in lit. the fisrt few days of class he will try to make it seem like a hard class but it's not bad, he keeps everything interesting.
He's not very easy, but his class is worth taking. Very cool guys and he helps you out so much with papers (as long as you ask). If you make a valient effort in the class you will get a good grade.
Okay, so tests can be difficult if you don't do the readings and don't attend class. So in order to pass and get a good grade you must do this. Sounds easy enough, BUT at the end of the semester you have to write a huge term paper which is confusing to say the least. He does help you if you ask, but can be contradictive.
You have to attend class and read the books! Don't be late or you'll miss the quizzes but Tom is really nice and funny. The papers aren't difficult at all unless you have a 10th grade writing level. Then you might find it tough.
Mr. Ulch is a very unhelpful professor who does not provide instructions for assignments or guidlines, he is ruthless as a grader and has extreme demands for papers that you write. If you feel you might miss a few days of class...take a different instructor
Tom is not only a great teacher, but incredibly cute!
Awesome prof.
THIS MAN WAS AWESOME, VERY INTERESTING, DID GO BY THE BOOK, BUT READINGS WERE PRINTABLE FROM THE INTERNET, SO U REALLY DIDN'T NEED THE BOOK. THE EXAMS ARE EASY AND THE FINAL PAPER IS A PIECE OF CAKE. A+ FOR TOM.
He is very strict with assignment and due dates, but he is very helpful and fair. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester.
Good guy, good teacher. Entertaining and enlightening class
Attend class everyday, study your notes, do the readings, and write your papers ahead of time. If you do this, you will get an A or B. LOTS of extra credit opps, take advantage of them. Talk to him about your final paper thesis, he will even read it before you turn it in for advise. Ignore the haters, they slacked off! From the primordial ooze....
Four pages of notes on what he didn't want in a paper and six lines on what he did want. If YOU do your homework on literary papers, you'll do fine. He's funny, sarcastic, and always interesting. Sometimes, a little shocking for the old school student. DO ask for help. The extra credit opportunities are plentiful and generally fun/informative.
He will help you if you ask, and he's laid back. He didn't require a book for our class. He was a nice guy and i hope i get another class with him!
BRILLIANT! This guy is amazing. He knows what he is talking about and he is not afraid to approach any topic. If you just go to class and pay attention then you will do fine.
LOL!"From the primordial ooze"...sad that I get that joke. Anyway, yes Tom is ruthless when it comes to grading your work, so be prepared to PULL YOUR OWN WEIGHT! He's funny & engaging in class though, just take advantage of his help & PAY ATTENTION!! Seriously, you're missing out if u don't take this class. Awesome guy, PLUS... he's Canadian!!
Tom is an awesome professor and extremely helpful. If you go to class everyday and do your homework the class is easy. But his teaching style tends to incorporate brainwashing techniques...Myths are sacred traditional stories...*glare*
Whose shaping function...NO NO, MAKE IT STOP!! *sobs* Brainwashing aside though, he's pretty cool, tells it like it is!! Oh, by the way, you actually CAN use the primordial ooze thing...just use proper citations!! ~.^
this guy is a joke. he thinks he knows everything about everything. his papers are confusing, and he demands way too much for a simple english class. his grading scale is also very questionable.
Awesome! He does not like slackers though, so beware all you lazy asses.
I'm not sure what to think of Professor Ulch. On one hand he seems like a cool person, but on the other his papers are pretty hard. The topics are supposed to be "fun", but they end up being more annoying than anything. Also he's VERY nit-picky about the papers. If anything varies from the handout it's an automatic 10% off for every mistake.
Tough instructor. Strict on attendance and essays. Lots of out of class work. If your lazy, avoid Tom. If you do your reading then tests are very easy. Show him your essays early and he'll help you perfect them. Classes can be funny and interesting and go by fast. Sometimes to fast. He covers too much material so you never get deep into stories.
Ulch...one of a kind type of teacher. He is tough if you don't go to class or you screw up on a paper. Tests depend on how much studying you put into them, yet they're on very basic information. Best part is when no one shows up for class on a quiz day...Just write something!
Tough professor but at the same time he makes his intentions very clear. He goes over all his guidelines and makes them known to you. If you're lazy or don't go to class you will fail. The classes have a relatively large workload. He's a funny guy and is always willing to help if you go to him. Somewhat cocky but call him out, he'll talk with you.
Not recommended for freshmen
Passionate about what he does. Don't let him intimidate you the first class, he tries to scare off people left and right in the first week or 2. Put forth effort and you'll do fine. He gives bunches of extra credit and is very approachable.
The man is on a power trip, he lives to fail people
I took this class as a freshman and got an A in his class. He is kind of difficult but you lazy slackers can do fine if you just buckle down and work hard. Still if you want an easier class then you probably shouldn't take Tom. I liked this class because it was very interesting.
This class was awesome. Tom's a really great teacher: Interesting, engaging, and challenging in a good way. He gives perfect insight into the books/stories meanings, and is entertaining too. He grades pretty tough on essays, but if you aren't an idiot you will get a good grade. Go to his office hours and get your essay looked at for SURE.
Tom is a cool teacher. He offers lots of extra credit which he encourages you to take advantage of. He can be tough on grading but if you go to him during his office hours you will be fine. I would recommend him to anyone who hates sitting through boring lectures. All around fun and interesting class.
Absolutely amazing professor(: He makes the class as idiot-proof as he possibly can. He is always willing to discuss with you the papers you have written, and will give guidelines on how to improve them. amazing teacher!
Ulch has got strong opinions & isn't afraid of shoving them in your face over and over again. That being said, he's very helpful if you do things his way and he IS very intelligent. Liked the course material.
It's either his way or the highway. He is always right. He is crystal clear on everything. However, if you dont write in his style, you will have a hard time with him.
Mister Ulch is a ballin' teacher. He is extremely clear with his expectations from the class and gives copious amounts of extra credit which isn't hard to take part in. Most importantly he cares about students (as long as they care too). Go to class, take notes! Tests are a piece of cake, if you study.. as per usual. Highly recommend this class! :)
Nice guy, interesting subjects, great teacher.
This professor is GREAT! He is extremely helpful and always willing to answer whatever questions you have about the assignments without making you feel stupid. He appears hard in the beginning, but he just wants you to do your work and attend class. I have learned a lot being in his class and I give him an A+ for being such an awesome professor.
Tom is the type of professor I expect when attending a university. He makes you work to earn your grade, not just skate by. Which for me makes it easier to retain the knowledge. Classes are entertaining and interesting. Definately recommend taking his classes, IF you're willing to work to earn your grade! Excellent Professor!
Tough but fair
Tom is my favorite professor at Eastern! He taught me how to write an "A" worthy paper in college. It is rare to find a professor who is professional AND fun. I highly recommend him to anyone that truly wants a rewarding educational experience.
Tom is an amazing teacher. He does swear a lot, and in the first 2 weeks he tries to scare you off. Don't be scared off. He talks tough but if you listen, do your work, and make an effort, he WILL pass you. if you have questions, ASK THEM! ASK ASK ASK! his office is your office, go there!
He's really funny and makes class interesting. But honestly, for a 100 level class, he grades way too hard on papers. His tests are not as hard as he makes them sound. I was freaking out bad before my first test, and it was kind of easy. The questions are really basic. Just study, and go to his study sessions, you'll be fine. Unless you can't write
Great teacher but does try to scare you off in the first couple weeks. Follow his directions to the smallest detail and you'll do fine in his class. Difficult grader for a 100 level course.
He is very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject. Goes out of his way to help students and have study groups. Really great teacher.
Amazing teacher, best I've had at EMU so far. He is a tough grader, but make use of his office hours, and the class will be great. Ulch is a great guy, and will take time to talk to you, if you make time for him.
He works you really hard but you learn a lot and he is a very down to earth guy. Recommend it but just be responsible.
He really needs to lay off the pedantry: threats of total failure for minor grammar mistakes are terrifying for me especially because I have an anxiety problem. Also, he is absolutely terrible with responding to email in any sort of prompt manner.
He is real but very strict. You write three main essays worth 10% of your grade then you have the final portfolio at the end of the semester. If you need help, always ask. He is always willing to answer questions although he is not good responding to emails!
I'm telling you this now: don't ever get on his bad side. He will bury you! His class is difficult, but you do become better writers. You have to show that you're hardworking and willing to do the work, otherwise you'll get no sympathy from him. He has high expectations, but they're not impossible to reach. Do your work and you'll be fine.
He is an awesome person and teacher. He comes off as intimidating but as long as you respect him and do what he asks of you, he is awesome. If youre looking for a blowoff teacher, DO NOT take him. He is by far my favorite teacher at EMU and I feel lucky to have had him as a teacher.
Tom is the best educator I've ever had in my life. He will ruin your life if you don't do the work but if you do, he's like your best friend. Tom is funny, witty, irreverent, obnoxious and always keeps life interesting. I don't even like LITR 161 but I'm taking it because he's teaching it. Best professor EVER.
Tom is a great professor. His class is difficult, but it is not impossible. If you don't show up to class or are late all the time DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very strict with a military background so if that's not your style I would run for the hills! lol
Tom is amazing. Do your work, always come to class on time and for the love of God, READ THE STORIES and you'll be fine. If you screw up, he will ruin your life but he's a fair professor who will be nice to you if you do your work. If not, then you are in serious trouble.
He is an awesome person, is a very hard grader. He has a very strict attendance policy. Always do your readings, because he does give quizzes. Overall, very easy to get along with and but the only extra credit opportunities happen outside of class and usually require money.
He was great being my first professor upon attending the university. Although he graded difficulty it was helpful and all of the assignments given had your interest in mind. Even though he acts tough he is really nice and helpful when you get to know him.
Tom is a tough grader so make sure your papers are perfect especially when it comes to grammar and layout. Only take his class if you love literature because you will have to do the readings to pass.He is very straight forward and will tell you exactly what to expect. BE ON TIME, he will call you out. He is a great guy, I loved this class.
Tom Ulch was one of my first professors and as a Freshman I felt very intimidated by him. He's kinda scary and very strict, but he knows his stuff.
If you have any interest whatsoever in Native American Literature, take this class. Tom really knows his stuff. You can't really slack off in this class if you want an A. You have to do the readings, show up, and study for the tests. The first test is challenging but if you study a lot it's not too bad.
Great instructor, great guy. If you want to pass, go to class. If you don't, you'll regret it -- and he'll let you know in front of everyone. Clear assignment and classroom expectations, tons of group work. Funny man with a beard. He made me think and that was reflected in my grade. This is NO EASY A!
Funny, non traditional professor. Take advantage of his professor hours. Not too many papers to write, and plenty of time to write them. However, the rubrics as incredibly clear cut and there are no real lectures to learn how to write rhetorically. Formatting is very important. His bark is worse than his bite. You'll need the text for reference.
my favorite professor so far in college. He was very clear in what he wanted and he was thee to help. I actually enjoyed going to this class, never missed a day.
The guy likes what he does, but he's unclear with what he wants with your assignments. His feedback doesn't help much at all besides piss you off because he seems to give poor grades for no reason but to seem like a hard teacher
Not a terrible person but this class is much harder than any other section and is much more difficult than it needs to be. For the sake of making your life easy do not take this class. This however, does not make him a bad person. He is a nice person just not someone you want as a teacher.
Best professor
He was an okay teacher, probably would consider him narcissistic. He swears a ton which makes him super unprofessional, but he knows his stuff. He's experienced and lives a unique life. The class wasn't an English class. We did like 7 assignments all year and barely had class. He's not that great, don't take him.
Tom was amazing professor! I was hesitant on taking his class because of reviews I read on here, but from day 1 he lets all of his students know that he doesn't put up with any BS. He's helpful in so many ways, but you have to be willing to go the extra mile too! Not a lot of homework, but make sure to go to class and ALWAYS follow instructions
Dude is awesome! Cares about students and is always helpful.
I really enjoyed him as a professor. Very clear cut. Honest. Understanding, funny as hell and cares about his students. He is really into his teaching and gets you excited about it as well. wonderful teaching style i recommend him for the native american literature.
Tom is a really cool guy. He tells you what he expects from you, and that he wants you to actually put work into his class. He's hilarious and is always helpful.
He's very down to Earth and he'll tell you EXACTLY what you need to do to pass and do well in the class. He doesn't try to trick you into a hard class. His class is NOT for those that have problems following directions to the letter or those who want no workload. He also has a tendency to use profanity, so it's not for those who dislike it.
Very strict on using MLA format; if you don't follow it, he will have no problem failing you on that particular assignment. Gives very simple instructions on what he's looking for in the assignments, so you should get a good grade if you listen.
Tom, was an amazing professor, however he was a tough grader, and very specific about what he wanted in the paper use MLA format and you will be alright.
There are three major papers with a final portfolio at the end of the semester. If you want an A, you need to visit him to get help with your paper. It is because he is a harder grader. He was not available near the end of the semester, so I was not able to see him for help. He is not my type of professor.
didn't appreciate his language. very rough and the final project took very much time. he was a decent professor but I don't recommend and I would not take again.
He's a very very tough grader, but he's an awesome professor. For a not so great writer, he was very intimidating. Strict on the specifics of MLA and will not grade papers that aren't in MLA. Other than that, he doesn't want to fail you and offers extra credit throughout the semester.
Great guy. I wish I could take another one of his classes!
He does not care about you. Day one of class he tells everyone to drop. Don't waste your time. If you do not turn in anything, you fail, regardless of your grade. Tom is on a power trip and gains pleasure from making students fail. He does not want any student to email him, and he will not respond. If you hate students, why teach?
First day of class I was terrified of this teacher and then failed the first essay. Hated him at first, but Ive never learned so much from one teacher. Writing essays comes so easily to me now and Im thankful that I had him as a professor. Hes tough but thats what makes him good, hilarious and knows more than just english/writing.
Do your work and you're great.
I would say that he is a pretty good professor. He takes time in class to reiterate what he expects of you. From what I understand, his class has a lot more writing than other classes, so don't procrastinate like I did. There are a lot of journals to do, so try to do them in a timely manner. He offers extra credit and office hours.
Tom is a very straight forward guy. He is very clear during the first day of class. If you don't like him, drop the class. His course is graded on 3-4 big assignments, which can be a lot of work, but he is very clear about what he expects. He is a tough grader, but you'll live. I was terrified to take this class, but he turned out to be a favorite.
3 essays and he grades hard but if you turn everything in you'll do alright and don't expect an A
Makes you do journals that are a complete waste of time and don't help improve your writing.
Hands down the best professor Ive had. A real down to earth guy, if you respect him he respects you. The only ones who are upset with this class are the ones who expect to do nothing and get a good grade with no effort. Awesome hearing him talk about his family. Funniest guy. Class ended early all the time.
Tom is a cool professor. If you are a late person I wouldn't recommend you taking his class, because if you are late on the day a paper is due you'll get a 0 on that paper. Also, he doesn't use canvas, but he is a really nice guy and he's funny. Don't expect an A though cause he is a tough grader, but he's very open with reading papers before due.
Hes great. Hes a hardass when grading papers, and if you dont get your form correct , you WILL fail! do all the work, and its an easy class. He gives you a month to do a four-page papers and holds open conferences during his office hours where you can come in and help with your papers. Highly reccommend!!
Tom seems pretty tough at first and the workload is a lot but as long as you stay on top of it and don't procrastinate it's not too hard. If you are having a hard time, talk to him about it. He wants to help he just needs to understand whats going on. I nearly failed the class until I talked to him and I ended up with a B+.
Overall a reasonable dude! Assignments were demanding and interesting, but I can't say that I became a better writer. Typically ends class early/cancels class, so don't schedule this it in the middle of a block of classes.
Tom is hilarious, easy going, and to quote him, "if you care, I care." If you show that you are trying and you care about your grade, he will do the same. Don't submit late work, that is just ridiculous and he won't accept it. If you do not follow MLA format HE WILL EAT YOUR LUNCH. Just read your book, and relax. It is so simple. Tom is a good guy.
Great teacher and gives good feedback!
Funny guy, however he isn't for everyone
Very interesting person, get the major projects done in mla format and youll be fine
I took his class asynchronously. It was somewhat straight forward but there were some assignments that had very little criteria to follow. Also, when he says a paper has to be 4-5 pages in length, he doesn't mean hit the 4 page mark. He wants the ENTIRE page to be filled with work but doesn't specify that in the rubric. He grades very harsh as well
He was a very harsh grader. When making rubrics, the instructions were not totally clear, and you end up having to email him a lot about what the essays entail. Does not specify the exact page length and marks you down if it is not exactly four or more pages.
Made me write too many journals with excessive commentary, and not applicable to actual assignments. I am better at Bengali than English because of this class.
Pretty chill guy, gave me good feedback when I asked for it. Only about 5 papers, a final portfolio and a bunch of journals, but you can write whatever you want for the journals.
Laziest professor and cared more about talking about his hobbies/bragging about his followers on social media than teaching us how to write a proper essay. He doesn't give much feedback on your work, which makes it hard to revise for the final portfolio. Tried harder to be our friend than a professional professor. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! Tough grader!
Don't take this professor. He didn't teach us anything and just talked the whole class. Waste of time. He does not give great feedback on papers unless you go to his office hours and ask.
He does talk about his hobbies a lot. There are 4 big assignments and that's really your whole grade. Attendance is 10% so go to class. I got my grade to an A by having him constantly read my papers and doing extra credit. If you're good at writing take him, if not don't take him. Make sure you know MLA format.
Challenging course, but worth it with the right approach. Engaging lectures if you stay focused. Use study tools like Unstuck AI along with the textbook to stay on top of the work.
I don't think he needs to talk about how he plays poker professionally. When talking about assignments, he says what the assignment is and doesn't even explain it well. He also says there's no such thing as a stupid question but a stupid email, and that made a few kids not want to ask questions. Do not take him if you are a visual learner.
He assigns extremely specific papers that are nearly impossible to get an A+ on without having him proofread them or going to the writing center. The worst part was he made us write nonstop without lifting our pencils or the whole class would fail. I have carpal tunnel, and my wrist hurt so badly I needed pain meds for a week. #stop that exercise
