Had Kojar for Intro to Ord Dif Eq, he really likes to pick on people who show up to his lectures (he'll actually memorize your name so don't sit at the front), his questions for his slides are unclear, and he looks at his tablet as if he dropped his glasses and is squinting.. practice problems in class take up the entire class, eh, whatever prof
Hes honestly one of the good profs. Lots of examples in class that cover the entirety of the topic being taught. His handwriting is not the best but he will clarify if u ask. Very nice typed notes. Stays after class to talk with the students, knows ur name and seems to actually, genuinely care about his students. A shocker at UofT! Def recom.
Took MAT244 during Summer 2018 with him, he's a good man. Will make the effort to remember you by name, has great lecture notes. Sometimes things can be unclear but he'll never hesitate to clarify things for you. Practicing is key, but then again this goes for everything in ODEs. His exams are very easy, based off of quizzes and problems he posts.
This man honestly cares so much about the students. He remembers most of our faces and is consistently asking for feedback, which he acts on. We started off rough but his lectures have improved dramatically with time. Recommend
I didn't think it was possible for an instructor to appear as if they had no clue what was going on, while also skipping steps leaving the majority students confused. Would not recommend
This is the only prof who keeps thinking students are cheating and trying to make the tests harder and harder so no one can cheat as he said, by putting one super hard question on a 3-hour test and he said he did not expect people to finish it. However, many of us do spend lots of time on this single question. :(
He tried to be organized by writing latex typed notes. However, there are tons of errors in the notes, many of the definitions are even not consistent. You can feel that he is not prepared for his lecture and skip many important steps which may confuse the majority. He did not take your suggestions but just blame students, when the class ave is 40.
Changed the syllabus after the second week of class, just because he thinks students are going to cheat on a 24-hour test. Call a vote but only half of the class knows. Whatever, he should design the class well but not keep changing the syllabus after it begins. We paid tuition and lost some money after the second week, if we dropped at that time.
The tests and problem sets questions are unclear, just like his lecture.
The worst prof I ever have. If you see this prof again, consider taking the course in the other term.
Changed the promised 24 hr test to a timed test few weeks after the course started. He pretended to be fair, and asked us to vote for a 24-hr test, but it will be much much harder, or a more approachable timed test. In the end, the timed test is super super long and hard. Oh, he told us the timed test will be harder than assignment after the vote.
They always leave out the most difficult part of the proof in lecture, tutorial, or even assignment solution, and say it will be left as an exercise for student. Expects us to write so much details in proofs, even more detailed than my first and second calculus course. The marking is picky and tough.
Assignment is long. Sometimes they mark 3 out of 4 questions, sometimes they only mark 1 out of 4 questions. If the question you messed up is the only question that got marked, then you are screwed. Assignment is also on a weekly basis, which is way too much for a third year proof based course.
Always suspects students cheating on his assignments when the assignments average is too high. Claim that students did cheat in assignment when the test average is too low. He designed the test so hard to gauge our ability, but he told us beforehand that this test will be more approachable because it is not a 24 hour test. Avoid him! NICE PROF! BYE
Very nice and approachable instructor who cares about your learning, but also fairly difficult. If you put in the work you can do well.
After getting poor reviews he started sending multiple emails to people who dropped the course thinking that they were the ones who gave him poor reviews. This is my first review motivated by HIS emails. He changed the test format and time last minute and has numerous mistakes in his notes. Terrible experience and waste of tuition. I would give 0/5
Makes mistakes constantly, and is corrected by the other professor. Constantly shoots down questions.
Doesn't fully answer students' questions, only demonstrates simple examples and leaves difficult ones for you to do on your own. Assumes you already know everything when teaching. Prepare to teach yourself and learn from the textbook.
Lectures are less organized than other professors. Tests and teaching are often faulty, cant even correct everything on the final.
poor content deliver
Absolutely terrible if you get him switch out immediately
The main problem is that his online lectures are not great, doesn't explain things clearly. Also, the final exam was the hardest ever. Maybe if the course is not online it might be better, but who knows.
Writes so disorganized with such bad handwriting that I had to resort to YouTube for pretty much everything he taught. Very obviously doesn't prepare one bit before lectures. Multiple errors in many of his notes.
The assessments were fair; he went above and beyond to ensure the class had the best learning experience possible. Would definitely take again.
Tomas Kojar taught a great MAT290 course! The exam was hard but fair, and I believe that anyone who studied hard enough should be fine. Great content, definitely my favorite course this semester! Thanks Tomas!
He's a tough grader but overall he is a genuinely nice guy and tries his best to teach the course. The final was hard but fair. 9/10 would take the course again.
His lecture videos were messy, and filled with illogical mistakes. He also skipped steps that made everyone confused. You had to learn everything by yourself from textbook and YouTube. His exams and quizs became super tough and the marking scheme became ambigious after realizing the class had a high average. Get ready to GG if you had him.
Really good prof. A bit unsure of himself but excellent instructor.
Great Course Instructor. Really caring of the class. Ensured that help was accessible beyond class. Would definitely take his course again.
Took the course remotely from China, he was very fair and made a good effort to include international students by recording lectures.
Very hard final, but usual level of difficulty for his quizzes. The class he taught was my favorite during the year :)
Illegible lectures, during which he skips too many steps. Unclear grading criteria, little feedback on quizzes. Speaking of quizzes, their difficulty was wildly inconsistent. Not very receptive to questions. Be prepared to self-learn.
As an international student taking online school, I was very worried that my learning experience would be hindered by the time difference. However, Tomas Kojar ensured that I never missed out on learning the material and was fair marking the assessments. The final was challenging, but the questions were intellectually stimulating.
Great clas!
I loved Tomas's lectures. His soothing voice helped the intimidating online school environment. The assessments were fair, with the exception of one which was dropped thanks to Professor Kojar.
Absolutely insanely hard class, but the most interesting class I took in university by far. Worth the hard work, even if it doesnt always pay off.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!! I have taken 18 courses so far in uni, none of them reach the level that Kojar delivered in 290. Highly recommend.
AMAZING PROF.
Great prof, MAT290 was my favourite course this semester.
Let's say hypothetically that students started hating on Tomas due to an unfair final exam. That would imply that Tomas is a tough and unfair professor, which is simply not true. The reviews are obviously purely emotional which is typical from a left leaning collective of students, such as the ones attending liberal universities. Facts dont care.
Great course! Really enjoyed his lectures
Needed to study but there was a big difference in performance once I did. Truly great to see hard work paying off.
Hard class but really interesting content
Didn't teach anything. Tested on abstract high level questions that weren't even close to the assigned homework. Intentionally left out examples that were tricky - only showed us how to do the easiest problems. Then tested us on crazy hard corner cases.
Honestly dont bother doing the textbook homework because it is nothing like the quizzes. He intentionally leaves essential material behind to test us on it later. He ignores our questions and makes multiple mistakes in his lectures.
Tomas is a fantastic instructor. Loved him from start to finish. Absolutely amazing lecturer and his teaching style is very clear. I can confidently say that I learned more in this course than any other course that i've taken this year. 10/10 would do again
Kojar is is an amazing professor. I thought Mat290 was a bird course but he made it into inspirational subject. He speaks very slowly allowing us to understand and hear everything. I would suggest speedrunning his lecture videos.
I thought he was a TA or at most a graduate student. Seems like a nice guy but not suited for a teaching role. Made multiple mistakes during lectures and skimmed the student chat for the correct answer.
The best math prof
Horrible at explaining the most miniscule things. Sometimes makes you wonder if you don't know the content or if he is just terrible at explaining and confusing himself. He needs to stop taking things too personal. Other than that I can tell he is knowledgeable but just needs more preparation.
Prof. Kojar has shown himself to be much more willing to demotivate the class than anything else. On top of extremely obscure marking criteria and a generally unfavourable approach to teaching, his comments during exams bordered on crushing our hope rather than providing much insight.
As an instructor for second year mandatory course, Tomas was irresponsible as he never prepared for either his live lectures or videos. It made his lecture full of mistakes and made people skipped the class and learn by themselves. His assessments were also awful because of the inconsistency of difficulty and ambiguous grading criteria. Avoid Him!
It's frustrating that students are deliberately trying to lower his ratings, just because he didn't make the course easy enough for them. Tomas took a bird course with traditionally plug and chug formulas and turned it into an interesting course where I genuinely learned a lot. He taught theory, and everything that we were tested on, he covered
Worst Prof, terrible pre recorded video and explanation. Most things on the test are never covered in class.
I went every office hours of him and every time he answered to my questions so friendly and professionaly.
Prof. Kojar lectures in a "non-scripted" way. Instead he explains as he goes and actively proves everything how he's currently thinking. This is ideal for students who are actively engaged 24/7. Unfortunately undergraduates rarely are and thus find his method, opposed to reading off an ideal, zero error "textbook" proof, challenging. Not his fault
Tomas was a great prof. He was accommodating and tried to encourage participation. His lectures and office hours were helpful as well. I took this course as a non math student and was nervous about it. But Tomas was really great at explaining concepts and making sure people understand so this class was definitely doable
Nice course structure and nice prof with lots of chances to improve your grade.
The course content is tough, but Prof is willing to explain every question. He also gives bonus mark. So, take your time and this course is totally doable.
A good course structure with very helpful lectures and lecture notes. Following the course assignments and checking the answers with the instructors would guarantee success in the course.
Really good Prof. Goes through the material at good pace, and makes sure students understand the concepts.
Always reply on Piazza and the replies are really helpful!!
Lectures were well prepared, concepts were clearly explained, test questions are reasonably related to the practice questions, and each mark deducted comes with a fair reason. Professor Kojar was also very understanding, he would allow a few minutes of buffer time for crowd mark submissions, which is so important during the pandemic.
During the pandemic, professor Tomas has been very thoughtful since he tried his best to accommodate everyones time zone to let students go to his office hour in case students have any questions. Also his states every concept very clear. Marking scheme is also very fair, it gives you opportunity to get a good mark incase you did unwell on a test.
He's a really caring and sweet person! He'll stay for much longer than his booked office hours and explains things nicely if you ask! Do the homework though!!
Kojar is great, MAT137 is just a weird course as its not rly run by the prof, its run by the department. He is very kind, willing to help, and wants his students to succeed. Probs would be better if he could run the course himself. Sometimes unclear in teaching, but always lets students ask many questions. I quite like him, just not the course.
Not a clue what is going on in mat137 - not 100% his fault - but I find him hilarious.
Kojar is a great lecturer that cares about his students. He explains clearly in class and constantly had office hours that are really helpful. He even offered additional office hours for this end of the term since we have a problem set deadline. The course is definitely challenging, but he helps me enjoy the materials even when i'm struggling.
He is a great professor and welcomes outside classes, he also offers additional office hours for the problem set :)
having kojar as a prof made me attend every single lecture not just to learn, but also to laugh because he's hilarious and brings such a lively/vibrant spirit to the class. he also clearly wants his students to learn and have fun with the material, and is super helpful inside and outside of class. 10/10. KOJAR PLS STAY AND TEACH 137 NEXT TERM!!
I love him. He presented many examples and questions in class, and most of the time, I struggled with them; he was always able to clarify them for me. If you can fully absorb that information in his class, the exam will be easy to overcome.
On his OH, he really paid attention to each student asking him. He didn't just tell students how to do something, but he guides students step by step until they understand. In my opinion, he's one of the most realistic and kind professor because he acknowledge that the course is indeed not that easy for most students and tried his best to help us.
He explains things well and helps students with the problem sets. He also answers many students questions on piazza. But for me the course is tough.
The material is pretty tough, not made easier by the fact that his English is not perfect and notes are sometimes messy. However, prof. Kojar was really thoughtful and extremely caring - he often stayed around after class to answer questions and worked to make lectures engaging and funny. A lot of complaints are just because the material is hard.
Prof. Kojar explained concepts clearly and gave step-to-step guidance to solve problems until students fully understood. He is really patient and kind! He gave students bonus-mark opportunities (presentations of real-life application). He wants his students to succeed and cares about future. He is extremely caring and thoughtful! The BEST math prof
Prof. Kojar's lectures are great, would highly recommend. He's also incredibly patient and always gives detailed explanations when answering questions.
Amazing professor he is hilarious and actually tries to help you understand. I just hate MAT137.
Best man. Am such a huge Kojar fan. The tough course isn't his fault- it's the fault of high school not preparing us properly for University. If he could sit down and teach in a high school fashion, perhaps I would learn something from this course.
I love you Kojar :D Even you can't save us
very good very shtrong
Always patient and helpful. We have the MAT137 lecture from 8 - 9 p.m., and Professor Kojar always stays with us till 10 to answer questions.
Great professor. You can tell he likes it when people ask questions and wants everyone to understand the material. During lectures, his explanation can be a bit confusing and messy, but gives lots of opportunities for you to ask for clarification during class or one-on-one.
I think he is a great professor and loves how he breaks things down and works through expansions well
He's very helpful and approachable!!! He always stay after class to clear out our douts and approaches student during lectures to see if we have any questions about the content.
Poor at teaching, but a nice guy, and the grading scheme was fair. The midterm was a little bit tricky, but he scaled it up. The final exam is very easy.
Honestly, the best prof at uoft. Truly cares for his students and won't make you fail if you attend his lectures and he knows your face. Very very good at explaining concept and makes sure everyone in the lecture understands what he is talking about. Additionally, gives time during lectures to practice the concepts. VERY CARING AND FUNNY!!!!!
Goated Prof, Gl Dr.Kojar!!!
He's great and respected towards student, would like to get student's feedback for improving. But the average was low, maybe more curve is better for APM462
