I really enjoyed him as a teacher and as a person. He was very helpful as he would correct essay drafts before they were due. The books selected for the class were as a whole good choices. I would recommend this teacher.
The lectures were interesting although sometimes a little confusing because he would cover so much material. The readings were pretty interesting too. Overall, I liked the class a lot but it was also a ton of work. If you don't like to work then I would avoid his class. A lot of people complained about the amount of work.
Can be a pretty challenging class what with all the reading assignments, but the tests are very straightforward and the essays are really enjoyable to write.
Best instructor one could ever hope for. His quizzes are very straight forward, and he goes out of his way to help you with the essays. Stop by his office regularly, let him drive you nuts with his high expectations, and you'll never regret taking the class.
I didn't really like this class because his grading was so unpredictable and his expectations were unbelievable. The 12-15 page essay was a joke and I didn't like how he only let us talk about civil rights the entire quarter. I really think I deserved a better grade but he seemed almost determined to keep me from achieving an A. Dont recommend it.
Mr. Kim is friggin' awesome. What more can be said.
He likes some students a lot, but not the average ones. He didn't teach me how to improve.
This class with frustrate, stress, and freak you out. Yet you will LEARN more about writing than ever before. No in-class essays, attendence, or due dates but don't put off turning things in. Ontime gets comments which help A LOT. DO WHAT HE SAYS. Don't let his 2.0-is-great speech scare you, I got a 4.0 with honors because I WORKED HARD. Go for it.
he is terrible teacher that I have had in my life. He is freaking hard teacher. I can't believe that I failed the class which I studied very hard.
have to read a lot like all the time. to succeed you have to take lots of notes on lectures and remember details from movies that are watched and books you read.
he is a good teacher if your writing level is high or you had a good writing 101 instructor
Cool guy, ok teacher. He bailed on class a few times, but seemed to know his stuff.
Dr.Kim is one of the best profs at the college. He is sensitive to the individual student. Class material is always interesting and appealing, while at the same time you will learn a lot. He is not an easy grader, but he is fair. I like the fact that that he does not rely on multiple choice. He puts an emphasis on writing and anlaysis in class.
He's tough...he also has a dry yet great since of humor...good luck with him and be careful with any film appreciation class!
He is a very good teacher just a bit difficult with his expectations. He expects you to read a very large amount in a very short time. Besides that, he is a very funny guy and is very very helpful towards his teachings.
don't take his class. unclear, bad jokes, you don't learn anything.
hes great and gives you alot of time to do your work, alot is expected but its not to tought to get through
He is hard.... He wouldn't give us any good grade
The terrible teacher I have met.. so hard, and didn't understand what he did at all..
I took lit 246. Kim is a good teacher. He knows what he's talking about. Yeah the class sucks and he grades pretty hard on the papers (I never got more than a B) but the discussions were interesting and the books weren't too bad. You can only miss 4 days of class before it effects your grade. You will learn a lot if you work hard.
I'm only a first year Psych student so I can't really describe the mental state of this instructor as he BOMBARDS his students with an exasperating amount of work simply meant to fill time. He assigns so much work that he can't even keep up on grading it. He has a chip on his shoulder for his students so if you can, find another instructor.
This is the most disheartening class I have ever taken.
You have to like movies to take this class. He requires at least two movies every week. They are all old movies but some of them were fun. The nice thing is no textbook just reading mostly web pages. They weren't that interesting but they were short. Kim adds video lectures on youtube. That was helpful (this was an online class).
I enjoyed his class a lot!
Mr. Kim was always quick to correct issues or problems and in general had excellent communication. The course itself is interesting but does get a bit dry. It feels like the course could be made more fun/interesting given the subject matter. If you put in the effort you will do fine. Extra credit opportunities offset the tough grading.
I took his 'Film In Society' course and really liked it. He takes films from different decades to illustrate the changes and reflections we cast in those film, and vice versa. Really a great course, he requires a level of thought, he'll press you to give opinions. "I don't know" won't cut it. No text book, and tests are online.
Expects an obscene amount of work out of you for an online class.
READ THE BOOKS! The quizzes, which are online, are pretty easy if and only if you read the books. (wikipedia will NOT save you!). But, overall he's a chill bro.
He often gives an assignment and describes how he wants it, but when you get your grade back the comments he leaves say he was really looking for something else. "More" is a word he uses often. I don't feel like I've learned a lot from taking this class. I wish he would be more in depth about what he expects on an assignment.
He is very hard on grading and always wants "more" nomatter how much "more" you put in. Spent a lot of time in his class and worked really hard ending with a 2.8. Class was pretty interesting at times but not worth taking. Dont recommend Tommy at all.
I was studying in his online class. He is highly recommending you have good thesis in your essays, but no one would satisfy his request. The quiz is ok if you have read the books. However, he won't let you know if you got nothing from your essays.
This class is hard. If you are looking for an easy A, this is definitely not your class. Tommy is a tough grader and asked very random questions from the films on the tests. Most of the movies were so boring that it was hard to really get into them. If you are interested in classic Hollywood cinema, this is a good class for you.
This is my second class taken with this instructor and I've really enjoyed both classes. Not only am I learning a lot but I am also being challenged. The quizzes are tough but he grades on a curve and there were two opportunities for extra credit (in both classes that I took). I would definitely take another one of his classes.
Great instructor, sometimes isn't very clear on what he wants. As long as you understand the text and listen to his lectures then you are fine.
I personally LOVED this class, although the homework load is a bit crazy it's definitely worth it to take this class if you're planning to transfer to a 4 year. Professor Kim does a wonderful job at prepping you to further your educational career! Take any of his classes!!
This class was extremely difficult, especially if you want to try and get the work done before the weekend. Tests aren't available until Friday evening. He's a very slow grader.
I'm just starting to take his online class and boy is it hard! I am a hard worker, but the amount of work is tremendous. I didn't think there was going to be this much work. The quiz has questions that are complicating and even if you studied the material you are going to have to keep searching for the answer which results in time waste bad grade
I took his literature class online & he makes us read a lot, which is understandable, and then he makes us write some philosophical 5 page essays about our book using critical thinking and analysis. He expects so much! He thinks that we are all College Professors and are able to write at his level and he expects us to write as well as he does.
He is a nice guy but If you care about GPA, don't take this class.
I took him for Intro to Fiction. Hardest teacher I've had. There is A LOT of reading ( it's boring) his essays are confusing & his expectations for essays are very high. Lectures focus more on History than "Fiction". The online quizzes are long and hard, but he does a grade curve. Overall this class was very boring & difficult. Will not take again.
Hardest class I ever tooken. With 3 classes in one quarter, I had to focused 90% on just this one class. His essays are complicated and tough and he grades them like it a writing class. I had help from a tutor that did most of the essay and he still graded me below 60%. Take this class f you don't really care about your GPA
I am currently taking his online Film Appreciation class-- basically, do the work and you'll get an A. He's a fair grader and gives a lot of information/hint on what is expected during the quizzes/assignments. I love the fact that he actually provides lectures and doesn't expect us to teach ourselves like a lot of other teachers I've taken online.
I love the way he tried to remember all my classmate names. He is very nice, if you meet him at his office he will answer all of your questions. He very hard in giving grades :( But I think his method - watching movies and then write about it is better than reading books.
Professor Kim is a great professor!!! I LOVEDDDD HIS CLASS, in the beginning I thought it was tough, but as time progressed it got a lot easier. He takes writing really serious, although he is a tough grader he does a really good job at explaining his method of writing. DO THE WORK and you'll be fine. He gives great examples. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Lectures have some good content but they take way too long and in fact he has to pause every now and then to figure out what to do next in class. FIGURE IT OUT BEFORE CLASS!! He thinks he's funny but no he's just wasting time. Plus he treats us like we know nothing but expects us to write some best selling books kind of essays.
There's 3 quizzes and a final, if you do the readings and watch the lectures the questions are easy, super straightforward. Essays can be tough at first but you learn to know what he looks for. He throws extra credit all over the place, so make sure you do the assignments, they really bring your grade up! Discussions are easy points too.
don't take this teacher for english maybe for film studies but definitely not for english because he is not an english teacher. He thinks he's funny but no he's just wasting time. I took the hybrid class with him so you can only miss 4 days or else he will take -50 points. And there was no textbooks for the class all we did was watch films
The class is very simple and straightforward. Do what he asks you to do and you will pass
It wasn't the worst class I've ever taken, but I felt like it was a lot harder than it should have been. I consider myself a pretty good writer but he graded my essays pretty harshly. Don't talk about the plot. The movies he gives aren't too exciting and are pretty old. He asks weird questions on the tests but the Qs are mostly based off lectures.
The students giving average to poor grades are most likely students who either didn't do the work or procrastinated. If you want to take an easy class your just wasting your money. Im not saying he is hard Im saying he is a good teacher who wants to make sure we take something with us. Do the work, follow directions. Highly recommend Professor Kim!
I thought Film class would be easy but it was a lot of work. He is a fair grader and tough on questions but I enjoyed the challenged and earned a 4.0 by the end of the quarter. Now, every time I watch Films I mentally note everything I was taught in Film class. Cool guy!
He is a hard grader specially on the essays. He grades on grammar and all the shabang! If you think it's an easy class, it's not. Lots of reading required and he also expects you to remember things from lectures way before.
This is not an easy 100 level class, there is no requirement to have taken English 101 prior to this class, but he grades essays like your writing a 400 level class essay. The lectures are videos and are SUPER IMPORTANT. If you don't watch them you CAN NOT pass the exams. Required Novels were great. Will never take another of his classes.
8lectures 14to16 mins long , 2to3 videos that can take 3days, 1 thesis discussion 200 wrd replies 100, 1 quiz, & 20-80pgs due every wk. wk3 38 questions 1 hr multiplechoice & written but some require 200-300 replies. if u type 32wpm do the math not enough time. Thinks it's HISTORY and ENGL class so be prepared to write3 ENGL essays. AVOIDifUcan
This was the HARDEST 100 level class I have ever taken. He put up 5-6 video lectures that were 10-15 minutes long towards the end of each week that you HAD to watch to pass quizzes. On top of the lectures there were 2-3 required films each week, readings, 200-300 word discussion posts and about 4 essays. On top of all this he is a HARD grader.
Worst! Don't take him.
the first English class I've ever enjoyed, a great teacher with useful feedback with funny jokes.
Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy class. I really enjoyed it and I liked the books, but you really do have to put the work in.
Professor Kim was great. I looked him up on here before I started his class and I was really scared. Everyone said he was tough. Honestly though he's just very specific on how he wants his paper written, and he shows you how to do it. So it's on your own head if you don't show up! Fair grader and really funny. No books all movies too!
I took English 111 online and it was one of my favorite classes. Yes, there is a lot of reading. The discussion boards are fairly easy. He throws out extra credit everywhere. He responds to emails quickly. Overall, DO YOUR WORK, and you'll pass with flying colors. Almost all questions are basic summary questions. 3 quizzes, 3 essays, final.
He, just wasn't that good. He is very passionate about his knowledge about the class, but he is just very unorganized. He won't talk about a discussion board or anything until the day of, so be prepared. He forgets to say a lot of important information for the quizzes, and he sometimes gets info wrong, too. Wouldn't recommend at all.
He is extremely unorganized. Most professors stop adding content during the week before finals. He did not. Most professors had a final test or a final project. He had both & gave little to no instruction on the project. He is awful with explaining what he wants in papers and will continue to give lower grades despite not telling you what to change
Took this class as a running start literature class so I came in with high school expectations. Absolutely loved the class! Though there is a quite a bit of reading his lectures brings fresh air into them and transforms them into contemporary pieces that changed my view I had previously had on literature as a whole. 5/5 would recommend
.good and easy to understand lectures . Reading amount is a bit tough
A very stressful teacher, and a little bit unorganized where I feel like I cant succeed in what he expects when I'm not given an example or when he forgets to post the lectures and still crams in an essay and a quiz. it's like doing everything blindly and hope for the best. He doesn't really give great feedback or how we could improve the next time
I loved this class. the first module was kinda stressful but you get the hang of it . I would definitely take the class again. the professor was very helpful and would give out points for taking too long to grade something.
I really liked this class! Although it was a lot of work, you should be fine as long as you do it. He gives out a lot of extra credit, so to me it seems that it is more important that his students learn than worry about their grade. I learned a lot, and Professor Kim made it interesting! Just keep up!
I think his film studies class is a good choice only if you have a lot of time. His course is very lecture heavy and requires you to watch 2-3 movies a week. He also gave a few essays to write which I don't think were graded too hard and you learn a LOT in this class so you have to be paying attention.
Hard grader, definitely takes up a lot of time. Avoid this class if you have a tough schedule.
I took this online English 101 course and I would say its decent. Lots of movies to watch lots of time out into watching and analyzing them. There are definitely better teachers, his course had many assignments on tight schedule and he doesnt grade quickly yet it is fair. Stickler for giving classmates feedback.
really awesome teacher! makes class interesting even if you dont know what youre doing. lectures are interesting and will stick with you. Need to take notes for lectures. you have to read about 3-4 books, but its a literature class. i found it easier to take 112 first then 111. i dont usuall use ratemyprofessor, but this professor really wowed me
Definitely does take the time to read each essay. So dont expect a quick grade. Gives great feedback but if its not done in a specific style may deduct points, he has a preferred way of things. But clearly enjoys teaching because even when I would change my point of view in a discussion I wouldnt get deducted points for changing my side.
This class was one of my favorite classes. It can be difficult at first since youre starting to learn how to write an academic essay, but he helps guide you along the way and also has peers help too. Hes also open to helping you via office hours. The films are also pretty entertaining and most are recent. Overall, I learned a lot from this class.
He was a pretty okay teacher over all. But his grading criteria was unclear sometimes.
You like writing a lot essay go head and take this class. But for those who hate or like ok with it I really recommend you choose someone else.
Honestly, I thought he was not that bad of a teacher but then came the essays. First of all, he never grades the papers fast enough. We turned in an paper and he gave out the feedback AFTER we turned in another one. How am I supposed to improve if I dont get the feedback I need untill AFTER i turn everything in? Also, get ready to watch some films
Take another teacher, this class is NOT worth it. I usually get all As and this is the first time I have ever gotten a C. He does not explain himself well but repeats the same lectures over and over again. He also grades very late. Do not recommend at all
This class is nothing but films, reviews, and thesis.
It wasnt that bad of a class, he prepares you for upcoming ela classes by helping you know exactly what a thesis needs and what a paper needs as well. Tough grader but fair and gives great feedback if not a bit late. Overall pretty solid class. Do get ready to do a lot of revising though.
Overall, not bad of a class. Do what is asked and you should be able to scrape by with a passing grade. Get ready to revise a lot and watch some films.
This teacher is the embodiment of a great teacher who is a tough teacher. If you are confident in your abilities to do well in an English 101 class I have no doubt that you can pass this class with at least a B. There isn't many assignments however he wants all of your work that you submit to be on par with your best work which I honestly liked
No Matter what you do, do not take this professor.
This teacher was a hard grader yet he took weeks to give feedback on assignments which didn't help us improve in time for our next assignment which was usually an essay. He gives endless lectures and about 2-3 films to watch in a week on top of group assignments and essays due at the end of each week, and he does not negotiate at all.
Tough and unkind grader for a level 100 class, honestly isn't worth it.
Overall, Tommy is a good professor, the only thing that really is bad about that classes how he grades and the amount of heavy essays are due each week.
Professor Kim's class was fun and easy to plan for! There's a certain amount of module lectures each week, take well structured notes and you'll do just fine!! There's a quiz at the end of each module, 5 books you'll be reading over the course of the quarter, 3 major discussions +3 essays. (Instructions slightly vague on the latter, not too bad).
