I've heard bad things about this professor but he's the best one I've had for the 2 series. He's very predictableorganized and if you understand his in-lecture examples, then you'll do well on the tests. If you don't study or do practice problems, then you won't do well. Got low B's on the midterms and a 95% curved on the final. curves r gr8 too
Hayashi was a terrible teacher. His lectures literally put me to sleep. He would simply put the lecture slides up and then read them with little elaboration. One thing that was good was his generous curve. Even then however, you gotta go to lecture, discussion, and office hours. I didn't and I thoroughly regret it. This class made me feel very dumb
The language barrier is definitely a struggle. Be prepared to brush up on your Japanese. This makes lectures very difficult to understand. BE WARNED.
Lectures are long and boring, but useful because he does examples. Slides are online, but the examples aren't and those are mostly what's tested. (So basically go to class!) Sometimes he rushes through certain concepts, so I watched the EnderlePhd YouTube videos as a supplement when I didn't understand something. Overall, take Hayashi.
I could not understand most of what he said because he has an extremely thick Japanese accent. Uses ChemWiki, an online resource, so there is no physical text book. This makes reading & understanding the material really difficult. Tests are really tough, but he curves. I would never take this course again, I barely passed with a C.
I basically only went to his lectures for the examples on his slides. The examples done in class are pretty similar to the ones given on his quizzes and midterms. He occasionally includes some conceptual stuff. SO GO TO CLASS! He goes a little fast, so copy the slides before coming to lecture. It helps to know a little about what's going on.
Not an amazing teacher, but not a bad one either. I had a much easier time in his lectures if I did reading before attending. He has a thick Japanese accent, but he isn't difficult to understand if you pay attention. Helpful in office hours and wants students to do well. Easy midterms, not so easy final. TA graded harsh but prof gave pts back.
Textbook is transferring to online only. Never posted the content we needed to read. Problems in class were not prepared prior to lecture by professor so he was left scrambling trying to find why an answer made sense. Made it seem like he didn't know what he was doing. Rude during office hours. Curve unhelpful. Don't take.
Hayashi was a great professor. Although it can be hard to understand him at times, he goes over a lot of practice problems in class that show up on the tests. Also, there's no midterm and only three quizzes, and you drop your lowest. The final was tricky. He has a good curve and overall I recommend taking him!
Class structure is direct and predictable. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS and get help if you don't understand the problems. The tests are exactly like the practice exams. Lectures are straight forward and posted online. However, you should attend lectures to get the example problems, he explains them well. Very clear handwriting too. Used chemwiki as book
Even if he looks confused he actually knows what he's doing. As long as you read his powerpoint slides and do the practice problems you're fine. He's very willing to help, gives homework helppoints, and multiple quizzes which can save you if you don't understand the concepts. Would definitely take his classes if he taught in the future.
Homework every week, three quizzes (lowest dropped), one midterm. Honestly I did the bare minimum, and my 67 curved to a solid C.
He wasn't that bad but if you look around the class almost everyone was on their phone. I loved chemistry before college, now it's just meh. He is nice though. He hardly shows up to office hour and has the head T.A attend for him. Do practice tests in prep of the real deal. He has one of the most sweetest curve.
Professor Hayashi is one of the best teachers I have had at UCD. He really cares about his students and holds long office hours to help those in need. He really makes this complicated subject of quantum mechanics a fun class. If you completely understand his lecture notes and homework, this class should be very straightforward and fun!
You can barely understand what he's saying. He crammed two chapters in the last day (in a summer class so the final was the next day). Avoid him
Be prepared for a challenge. Weekly homework which is very helpful for the midterms. He is difficult to understand in lecture and yeah... The final exam is extremely difficult and be careful where you sit because people tend not to shower. Class is doable if you keep up with everything, but I assume you have other classes.
His accent is strong so it is hard to understand, but he makes p chem very easy to understand because exams come straight from the lecture's questions. I don't think he is the best teacher but his chem 107A is the best chem class in Davis. Excellent curve. I took it in summer and it is not difficult. I hope he could also teach Chem 107B!
Hiyashi speaks fine English. I wouldn't normally post a review on this website, but upon reading this I was so surprised that anyone has had difficulty understanding him. I wonder if that is some kind of imbecilic excuse for lack of understanding the concepts, with a xenophobic default blaming a fine professor. Who are these idiots?
I like Hayashi very much. I think he's a great professor. Actually I wonder why so many people don't understand his accent. He explains chemistry concepts very clearly and extremely helpful during the office hour. Anyway, I will choose his section again next quarter.
Has a thick accent that makes him hard to understand at some points. You need to be at lecture to fully understand his lecture slides. Some easy online coursework. We had a 7:30 am class, so he showed up late a few times. Independent comprehension is a must in this quarter system. Amazing curve. Need online access code. Get used to accented Profs.
I had a 730 class so it was a pain. But you need to go to class for the examples but thats about the only reason I went to class. He has an accent but nothing too bad its bearable. He answers questions if you have any. Tests are okay. I actually overslept and missed a midterm but still managed to get a C+ because of the nice curve.
7:30 am lecture. Thick accent took some time to get used to. Class composed of online homework + 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. HW is pretty easy, can get a little EC there. Quizzes midterm and final are all straightforward; gives you practice exams. Make sure to study his slides, do the practice problems he suggests. 8% curve was icing on the cake
I put in minimal effort and skipped nearly every 7:30am lecture. Got by with a C. Amazing curve. Easy homework, short quizzes (again, curved like crazy), 1 midterm, 1 final. Easy professor, just couldn't do the early morning lectures. Would recommend for an easy grade (put in some effort and you'll easily get an A).
Prof. Hayashi speaks fine English. I think he's a great professor and gives nice curve. Make sure you completely understand his lecture notes and homework and it will be easy to get good grade. He gives out practice exams. Quizzes, MT and final are all straightforward; I will choose his section again next quarter.
Lectures are nonstop slides, but the tests are clear and study guides make getting a good grade easy along with his curve.
Worst professor I have ever had. His lectures were unclear and he never stop to clarify a point. His tests were hard and he doesn't curve. Never hated chemistry so much until I found him. Please, if you still have some senses, drop and swap.
Very predictable and tests were basically the same as his practice exams and his power point slides are very clear and helpful. Going to class will really help.
Hayashi goes over powerpoints in class (posts them online), gives weekly hw (easy) and curves all tests :) His accent isn't even that heavy so that shouldn't be a reason to not take him lol. I pretty much only read/studied his powerpoints and did some practice exams before the midterms and final and passed with a B+. Took him for Che 2B as well :)
Great professor! Nice and patient and his accent isn't bad if you pay attention. Generous curves just do his practice tests
Dr. Hayashi was a great professor! Many students complain about his accent; however, paying close attention, you can learn much from his class! I really enjoyed his class and was one of my favorite classes in fall quarter. You just need to give it sometime to get used to his accent, but other than that, he's a great professor! Highly recommend him.
Very clearly does not care for the students or the class as a whole. Does not teach some major concepts and simply expects students to know things. However, I would not say his accent or his English was a serious issue. The issue is his lake of clarity and care.
Hayashi's so cute. Great Professor!
Hayashi is an excellent chemistry professor. His lectures are well-organized and are available as he sends them to smartsite. He does speak with a slight accent, but it is not too bad (what he says is usually on the powerpoint slides anyways). He also goes over examples in lecture so it is important to attend lecture. Really good professor!
Completely stopped going to lecture third week. Using a mixture of chemwiki (first concepts up to gases) & Enderle lecture videos (lewis-hybridization) I did good. A- on first midterm, A on second. If you work out of class (which you definitely should) you'll do great because of his curves; if you don't, may be hard. Quizzes/hw help with grade.
I liked Professor Hayashi a lot!! His lectures are very clear and organized, and the notes that he posts online are just super useful. Be sure to print them and take them to class, follow him on the practice problems and you will be good. I basically uses the notes as a reader. He does have an accent but it's not that bad. Would surely take again
Dr. Hayashi was extremely straight forward and it showed in his quizzes and tests. If you work outside of class and do LOTS of practice problems and review the concepts directly from his slides the class isn't bad. Hayashi is extremely helpful if you go to office hours, he obviously cares about his students a lot!
Professor Hayashi was better than I expected. His lectures are not engaging, but his expectations and exams are very straightforward. Exams are similar to his example problems and practice exams. He does has an accent, but you get used to it. If you put in the work, you will surely do well in his class.
+: Very straightforward on everything. Really helpful if you talk with him after class or in his office. Also: Example questions are important. Try catch every one of them. -: Basically reads through his lecture slides most of the time. Accent is a problem, and he hardly changes his tone when reading. Got sleepy when sitting in the first row.
Took him for 2A, again for 2B. Changed class a little, but overall was pretty similar. Do the practice problems he assigns, and know all the practice problems off lecture slides. Final was hard this year, but overall a very doable class. 2quizzes, 2 midterms. Quizzes were almost worthless, 4%, midterms were 18% each and final was 38%.
Going to lecture is strongly recommended, as Prof. Hayashi gives in-class examples that do not have answers posted online. These questions are very relevant to test material! His lectures are also clear and easy to understand. His accent is not too strong either, so comprehension shouldn't be that much of an issue.
Professor Hayashi was a very good chemistry teacher. His lectures were clear and he gave good example problems which reflected what was on the test. The exams were similar to the problems given on the practice tests, what was on homework and what was in lecture. The accent is noticeable but not a problem at all. Go to class to have the examples.
He is pretty straightforward, but has a bit of a thick accent. Once you get past that, he is fairly clear, although he occasionally stumbles over his words which can be pretty confusing at times. He has a really, really good curve which helped me a lot. As with a lot of classes, how much you understand is based on how good your TA is at explaining.
Hayashi was a pretty boring teacher, especially if you get an early lecture, it's hard to stay awake. He also has a pretty thick accent so be prepared for that. He has a slideshow to teach most of the lectures, which can lead to him sometimes going too fast, but he does post the slides online. I liked that he had two quizzes and one midterm.
I took him for 2B and 2A, and the class was the same format, 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. His accent is not bad at all. If you go to class, the examples he does in class are very similar to what is on the practice midterms and tests. The tests were very fair and the curve is huge (36% for a C-). He gives you plenty of chances to do well.
Dr. Hayashi is a good choice for che2 series. He explains the concepts clearly and test on examples covered in lecture. There is nothing extremely tricky on his exams or quizzes, just pay attention to details. His accent takes time to get used to but if you come prepared to lecture it shouldn't be a problem.
You're graded on 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, lab, homework, and the final. You have to buy the homework on Mastering Chemistry and it's due each week based on the lectures he covers in class. He goes off of a slide show and does a lot of example problems during lecture. The curve is very generous!
He was very whatever about analytical chemistry. If he ever teaches the class, tests are all from the questions at the end of lecture slides (optional). Do those cause they will be on the test exactly the same problem with different numbers.
I liked his lecture style - it was reminiscent of Enderle's somewhat in that he did problems on the overhead projector. But most of the time he was reading off of slides which wasn't the best thing since he has an accent. He was very responsive to questions though. Definitely go do suggested textbook problems, those saved my grade honestly
Class is extremely difficult and it does not help that you cannot understand the professor.
Great teacher. He posts his slides online (extremely helpful for me), he curves (40 percent is a C), and he has practice quizzes/midterms which are pretty much the same as the actual thing. Literally just doing those you can pass. HIGHLY recommend to choose him for Chem.
Hayashi is a solid teacher. He wont be your favorite or least favorite. Initially his accent is difficult to understand but once you get used to it, it gets easier. His lectures are helpful. Although he posts his lecture online, you still need to go to lecture to get the work for the example problems
BEST CURVE EVER
Hayashi is an awesome guy to work with as you can already see by the other comments. His accent was a bit of a problem for me however but if you sit in the front, (like I did) then it's not too bad. The curve is great!!! (42% is a C!!!!) Class is very rigorous so get ready to work your ass off!!!
Prof Hayashi was a bit difficult to understand initially because of his accent, but it becomes easier in time. He mainly uses lecture slides and expounds a little more on topics during class. He does example problems which are VERY important to write down because they WILL appear on quizzes/exams.
Professor Hayashi is a pretty good choice for Chem 2A . He was hard to understand at first, but you quickly get used to it. The content is pretty challenging, but Hayashi seems to genuinely care about his students. He is very approachable and is accessible for help outside of class. The curve is also really good (42% for a C-).
Hayashis accent is hard to get used to, but manageable. He is fair on tests and is predictable. Solid choice.
This class was honestly one of my best classes. The format of the class is super easy. As long as you read the lecture slides and take notes on it you're golden. There was 3 quizzes, 2 midterms and the final. But the curve usually starts at 69% for a B so thats another perk. Also for each exam theres a practice exam thats just like the real thing.
I skipped lecture so much. The points all come from the quizzes, lab, and your final. The homework is super easy and you are given a lot of time to complete it all. Curves are crazy generous. He posts all his lectures online so if you dont go to class to see how examples are done.. youtube. Super predictable tests too he really wants u to succeed.
The best Gen Chem professor at UCD. This class is challenging work tons of problems and you'll be fine. The final is easier than the midterms. Hayashi is fair and cares about his students.
Has a lot of grade opportunities with 3 quizzes, 2 midterms, homework, Lab, and final. The tests/quizzes are all pretty straightforward from practice tests, do those and you'll be fine. Hayashi posts ppt's the night before so going to class is not mandatory, but he will do practice problems in the ppt and not post the answers online.
Hayashi had great lectures and always answered questions. He is a physical chemist and so he teaches through that physics lens- it's hard. He always responded to my emails within a few hours. The subject was really hard for me, my grade is mediocre, but he is a good professor, nonetheless.
Hayashi is really difficult to understand and goes wayyy to fast in lecture. PRINT OUT all his lectures and bring them to class unless you write super fast. 2B is difficult but survivable if you put in the time doing ALL his examples until you know them forward and backward. I did well in his class but it didn't come easy. Avoid him if possible
He was a great teacher, but don't depend on the final curve. I did that and in the end, there was hardly any curve.
Hayashi has an accent and it is very hard to understand him. However he is a great teacher, just very test heavy so beware. 3 quizzes (4% of grade for each), 2 midterms (15% each), 1 final (40%)
He has an accent but you get used to it after a few lectures. He goes over his lecture slides (which he posts online usually before lecture) and provides examples and explanations. I already knew the basics of chemistry (high school) before taking his class so it wasn't that hard. As long as you study and go to review sessions you'll be fine.
Hayashi was definitely a better teacher than all the other professor. He teaches you exactly what you need know. Even though he has a heavy accent, after awhile you will get use to it. Make sure to attend lecture because the lectures are on the test. Prepares you for the final.
Honestly, the only problem I had with Professor Hayashi was his accent, it was hard to understand him. I did not go to lectures because the slides were posted online and it was hard to understand him. I felt prepared for the tests because he posted practice tests and practice problems from the book and they were very similar to the actual tests.
Honestly, the best chemistry professor I have ever had. He really wants every student to succeed. He gives out so many practice tests to make sure you are prepared. He actually does example problems on the overhead projector. Curve is not that great because students tend to do well on tests.
He is a really nice teacher and the homework given helps us learn the knowledge fast. Addtionally, his practive exam are very useful since most questions are similar to his midterm and quiz. Besides, you do not need to go his class since his slides, homework and practice exam are enough for you to get an A in his class.
Hard to understand but very accessible outside class and his lecture slides are great.
You can barely understand what he is saying. Like out of a whole sentence you can maybe make out 4 or 5 words at the most. He is really nice though and wants you to succeed. Do not recommend if you learn from lectures instead of by yourself.
Hayashi is a good choice for a chemistry professor. He has an accent, but it is not too hard to understand. Go to lecture, as he works out problems in the slides. Study the examples he does in class and in review sessions, as they will be similar to the exam questions.
Hayashi is decent compared to some of the other chem professors. The only hw is OWL, and his tests are fair as they cover material mainly from his lecture slides. You must go to his lectures (even though he reads off his slides) because of his examples he does in class, which pop up on tests. Testing outlook: 2 midterms and 3 quizzes
Honestly feel as though Hayashi deserves more credit than he gets. He's definitely a great professor and once you get past the accent (which isn't even that bad), you'll be fine. He is quick sometimes, but fairly thorough. NO podcasts, so go to class. Exams were really difficult though - make sure you know how to do examples on the lecture slides.
Really really nice professor! Easy test! Almost the same as the examples from the slides. Would take again.
Definitely one of the best teachers for the Chem 2 series. I would take him again for Chem 2B. Even though he has an accent, it is definitely understandable. He also does a good job explaining the basics of Chem 2A. I loved chemistry because he did a good job teaching the material.
Hayashi is one of the better choices for p chem. the quizzes and midterms are super fair and the questions are nearly identical to example problems we do in class. Hence, you need to go to class or at least get the notes from someone. Class average is around a 60 so there will be a nice curve.
He is a good choice if you wanna go easy with Pchem. He goes over example questions from his slides during lecture and those are very similar to the quizzes and exams, so do focus and practice on those mostly. There is no podcast, so go to the class if you can. He does curve at the end of the quarter which was nice.
His accent is the hardest thing to get over. I would have attended all of his classes (and not just 75% of his classes) if I could actually understand what he was saying. His slides were well-prepared, but he doesn't make all of his slides accessible after class. Basically you have to go to class and understand everything he says in order to pass.
2 quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final. Make one small mistake and that's 3 points off. You only get partial credit if you meet his grading criteria, which you won't know until after the quiz/exam. Reads off of slides sometimes. MC is harder than FRQ. My questions get ignored on zoom but others' get answered. Writing can be disorganized. Mumbles a lot.
Hayashi has a fairly heavy accent so it can be hard to understand him at first, but you'll get used to it over time. I had forgotten my calculus and physics but found the material to be pretty reasonable. All quiz and exam material is derived from lecture. MCQs test concepts; FRQs test examples covered in class. Solid choice overall.
I had Dr. Hayashi for both 107A and B in summer 2020. The midterms & finals were really similar to his lecture problems but the quizzes felt a bit harder due to the 20min time limit. Go to his OH if you're struggling!! He's SUPER sweet and helpful. I even made this account on RMF to leave him a review because he truly deserves a higher rating.
No matter what CHE107 is going to be HARD. I previously took it with Koski and Larsen and they were both terrible. I ended up failing and subsequently dropping. I did much better with Hayashi and somewhat understood the material as opposed to being completely lost. Focus on lectures and take good notes. Tests are similar to in class problems.
Prof. Hayashi genuinely does care about his students. Make sure you study all the recommended textbook and in class problems. Pretty much all the questions in the quiz and exams will be of similar format. The quiz content was more in quantity but easy to solve if you practice. Although there is a grade curve, don't rely much on it.
Yo PCHEM is consuming, as a result its well rewarding. Understanding the nature of particles takes time. Quizzes, Midterm, and Final. Prof makes clear what topics to understand most and assigns practice. Supplementation/prior reading of book will guide/strengthen understanding. Class rewards constant preparation/promptness. Quizzes reviews lectures
Took Dr. Hayashi's class for CHE 110A/B over summer session in 2021. He is probably the best choice for pchem- it's not easy, but the professor's lectures are helpful and he is very approachable outside of class and in OH. He really cares about his students, and wants them to succeed. Just doing the homework was enough, practice problems unneeded.
Hayashi really deserves a higher rating on here. He is very kind and knows how to introduce chemistry topics in a way that makes sense. When we were online, he was very understanding and informative when he answered questions. In person fewer people ask questions, so his lectures aren't as good imo. However, he is still a GREAT professor!!
The practice questions that he does during the lecture are 100% reflected on all the Exams. He's a cool professor, the only bad thing about him is that he has an accent but if you manage to sit close, you would be able to understand him. He's a normal professor so do not expect lectures to be inspirational or motivational.
I literally love this man. He's the most caring and respectful professor I've had so far. He ALWAYS extended the OWL homework because he was mindful of our other classes and exams. We had two midterms and they were more than fair. An actual king. Let me go start a Fanclub for him real quick.
Wasn't originally supposed to have him this quarter, but a personnel change made it otherwise. He is kind, he takes his time to answer questions and does so as detailed as possible. His lecture slides and example problems are very detailed. Midterms are fair game if you attend lectures, do your HW, and practice problems.
Hayashi is extremely caring and is mindful of his students comments and concerns. Often has given extensions for homework when students have requested it due to midterms. Very helpful during office hours! He will help solve any problem you have and work it out with you. Originally wasn't supposed to have him as a teacher but I'm glad I did.
Hayashi was very kind during office hours and walks you through the problems. His exams were reflective of what we learned in class. Study the lecture example problems, iClicker questions, and do some practice exams. Some people are so rude about him having an accent!! If you have trouble, just sit closer to the front so you can hear him.
Amazing professor, love him. So sweet and caring and really understands his students. Would 100000% recommend. As someone who hated chem and sucked at it in HS, this class really made me enjoy it.
Honestly I struggle a-lot with Chemistry but Hayashi was definitely a win for clear lectures. Not only does he make understanding difficult topics easy, he ALWAYS provides examples in his lectures and shows how to solve them. If you understand his lecture examples, you will do well on the exam. Definitely want to take him again.
Calling him the best chem professor is an understatement. He's an absolute legend
Absolutely amazing professor!! If you actually pay attention (and not complain about his accent), he is great at explaining and simplifying the complex content of the class. Examples in the slides are almost exactly the same on the tests. Exams are actually easy. Homework takes a while, but helps a lot with understanding. Incredibly accommodating!!
He the GOAT! Hayashi is great professor and would recommend to anyone taking Gen Chem!
This is my first time rating a professor on here, but I owe it to Dr. Hayashi to give him a stellar rating. As someone who struggles with chemistry, he made me consider minoring in it! He is super kind and he extends the homework often to avoid stressing us out. Get him if you can! He’s an amazing chemistry professor!
Obviously cares about the students in his class. Extended almost every homework due date and his exams were very similar to the in-class examples. One of the best professors at Davis.
very catering to student needs, like when a lot of people would mention they had a midterm the day a homework assignment was due, he would extend the due date. examples in his lecture slides are pretty much identical to the q's on midterms. he does have an strong-ish accent, but he is still understandable. Uses iClicker but not worth that much
really cool dude
Hayashi is a super chill prof. the recordings for this quarter weren't the best tho, so its important to show up to lecture, especially with there being iclicker credit for showing up. he also extended every single homework assignment, which was very generous. overall, very likeable professor but chem is still hard imo so good luck lol
Hayashi relies heavily on lecture notes. A lot of the problems on the midterms and finals come from the lecture notes so make sure you go to lecture. Also, he curves decently as CHE 002A is hard so there is a bit of leeway.
I loved him so much! He was so caring and he was willing to extend the homework deadlines. I was able to understand chemistry so much better. Kudos to him :))
Hayashi was amazing. He always tried to help us on tests beforehand like saying what main things will be on it. Although it was sometimes hard to understand him he taught the material well. Always gave hw extensions and is very understanding. Super amazing :)
Oh, sweet Dr. Hayashi, you were so dear and caring towards us. Seriously, he has to be one of the most kind and understanding professors. He explained problems, extended homework, and did everything to help his students. He really knows his stuff!
I didnt learn much from Hayashi, I had a good TA who helped me a lot during office hours but Hayashi went super fast and had a heavy accent that was difficult to comprehend at times. Thank god the curve was fat because I failed all 3 exams but still passed the class
Hayashi is so far one of the best professors in the school. He clearly is passionate about his work and care about his students. Office hours are god’s gifts. Often extend deadlines for homework. Exams aren’t hard if you listen well in class and practice a lot (especially the examples in lectures). FAT curve! Overall, take this man!
Exams are similar to lecture slides. Hayashi is incredibly caring and if you ask for an extension he will give it to you. Fat curve, he cares about your success at Davis :)
Dr. Hayashi is by far my favorite professor yet. He extended our hw assignments on multiple occasions hehonestlyshouldnthavebuthedid:) and is always ready to answer questions if you do have them. He is very understanding and is very clear with his lectures. His tests were also very straightforward and his curve is veryyy nice/reasonable.
This man extends hw assignments, which I really appreciated. For exams, he gives out practice exams, which I recommend looking at. The class is HEAVILY relied on the midterms and the final but there is a GENEROUS curve (i got like 50% but passed with a C+). My only complaint is that his accent takes a little to understand, but its not too bad.
I did not learn much from Prof. Hayashis lectures and his exams were pretty difficult. However, he curves the class extremely well. Although I didnt learn much from his lectures, he was very kind and will answer any questions. If youre wondering, I ended up with a B+
he was super considerate and caring & extended the hw deadline often which was really nice :D he always answered any questions students had and he taught chem well and made it a lot more reasonable to understand. i really recommend him as a professor and the curve for the class was great!
Clear and organized lecture, easily reachable, listen to students, flexible homework due date, even in-person review section over the weekend before finals. He simply cares about students and wants them to do well in his class. As long as you attend the lecture and review the lecture examples, you will definitely do well in this class.
Pretty good lectures and *really* flexible homework deadlines. Uses a lot of Enderle's content (worksheets/practice exams) which was a turn-off for me but it was better than nothing at all. Not a 5/5 lecturer (I fell asleep almost every week) but this class was not difficult (I did bomb the final though...)
I personally did not like the structure of in person lecutres, it just wasnt for me: However I really enjoyed his online lectures. He is very understanding of the situations of students and willing to make accommodations for them when such things happen.
He is actually a very nice professor and deserves a higher rating.. he is very clear as to what he wants and explains even the most basic stuff..
Professor Hayashi is an average professor. He is very caring and extended the deadline of every single homework. Though he is understanding and had fairly easy midterms, he's nothing special. His lectures are boring and I'm not a fan of his teaching style and the final was unexpectedly hard. Overall a solid choice tho! kind of a G
Hayashi was pretty awesome. There is definitely a lot of homework in this class which is done online with cengage. Hayashi was nice enough to pushed back a lot of the HW deadlines when students had too much on their plates. We barely/did not use the textbook and most of the content is within his lectures.
He’s great! Heavily curved class. Make sure to complete the exams. You’re better off filling out the whole thing than leaving it blank. Even if it’s hella long fill it all out! You’ll receive more points than those who didn’t. Hayashi extends deadlines and he’s super chill.
The only bad thing that I have to say about Professor Hayashi are that his examples can be hard to follow, but other than that, he was a really cool guy that cares about his students and chemistry. Don't miss any of his lectures.
Best chem professor by far. Super considerate of the class and always gave extensions when the workload was heavy.
Not very engaging but was quite caring. He seemed like a nice person.
Honestly, one of the fairest chemistry professors I've ever had. Always happy to answer questions and listen to his students. Class isn't mandatory, but I strongly encourage it, to not get behind. He does have an accent. However, I never had any issues with it. HW is all online and will seem challenging. Just don't put those off. :)
Chemistry is a hard subject but Dr. Hayashi was a great professor and very knowledgeable/passionate about the subject. Lectures go kind of fast so it is important to pay attention. He always responded to my emails really quickly and was always willing to help me with whatever I needed. Highly recommend.
I loved Dr. Hayashi's class His lectures go fast, but are def followable. He is also super open to answering questions after class, @ office Horus, etc. Homework is online and can take forever, but he almost always grants extensions - also a great study resource for exams. Massive Curve = easy to pass, harder to get an A.
I really enjoy his lectures, but they can get a little confusing. He's very lenient though, and I just enjoy his character.
Very thoughtful about deadlines, always pushed them back with my class. While chemistry is a very difficult subject, his lectures are well organized and easy to understand. You can tell he cares about his students and subject
Great professor!
I've had Hayashi for both CHE2A and CHE2B, so while I do not have much experience with other Chemistry professors, Hayashi is very valid to me. This beloved man (ifykyk) would extend homework if necessary especially during exam times. Chill man, would always choose him if possible. Knows what he's talking about etc.
One of the best Chemistry professors! He is very kind and caring. His lectures are straightforward and to the point. Attendance is not mandatory technically, but he does use iclicker. His exams are simple in that they reflect lecture material and iclicker questions. Do the assignments and study for exams and your grade should be good.
Lectures were slightly hard to follow, but not too bad. Very lenient when it came to homework. I struggled with the content a bit, but with enough effort on your part you can easily get an A. He's a nice guy and the class was good overall.
Very nice and lenient prof. He sometimes does iClicker during lectures but it's only 1% of your grade so you can skip. Extends deadlines often for homework and replies very fast through email. Exams are not bad - study the example problems he goes over during class & do some discussion worksheets and you should be good to go.
I have taken Dr Hayashi for chem2A and 2B he is a great professor. Really cares about his students and is very accommodating. Midterms and final are pretty fair as long as you attend lectures and go over practice problems as well as iClicker. Highly recommend profesor Hayashi!
I had Dr. Hayashi last quarter for CHE 002A and I'm so glad I was able to be with him this quarter. He handles this class really well, the materials are taught pretty well, and most people should be able to pass with his massive thick curve. Just put some time in and you will succeed in this class.
Dr. Hayashi is an awesome teacher. 2B is a hard class, but that has nothing to do with him, that's just the content. His exams are SUPER fair and reflect lecture material. Office hours are great and he made an additional office hour every week because some students couldn't make his primary one. Great teacher, great guy!
Great teacher and lecturer. Lectures were clear and concise, and tests were fair. The curves are really nice and he extends OWL HW if you're having trouble completing it on time. Respect him and he'll respect you!
CHE 110A (QM) isnt the easiest, but prof Hayashi is very friendly and approachable. The lectures were mostly clear: a mix of derivations and calculations. The HW was alright and the exams were a bit tricky (but MOST problems were covered from the HWs/lectures). Beware of coding work and occasional test probs on material learned the lecture before.
I had Hayashi for 2A and 2B and the good news is that his midterms are heavily based off of his lecture slides and example problems. It can be a little hard to understand him because of his accent and because frankly the lectures are kind of boring, but he's a really nice professor and will definitely extend the homework deadline if you email him.
He's a nice guy, not the best lecturer (because of his accent) but he genuinely wants you to know the materials and get good grades. He also gives lots of partial credits for long answer problems. Always redo classes and quiz problems, and know the concepts to prepare for exams. I would take him again for other courses.
I also took him for 107A and I may rate him separately. His way of explaining topics definitely needs work. If you do the reading (which I didn't) and self-teach, then maybe you'll get it better than I can. His T/F is work at least 25% in quizzes/exams, which doesn't help when those are the main things you're graded on.
Avoid at all costs
Professor Hayashi truly cares for his students and always answers their questions and explains them in a way that makes it easy for the students to understand. His tests are pretty easy as long as you do the practice tests that he sends out. He does use iclicker for participation but they don't have a big impact to your grade.
PROTECT DR. HAYASHI AT ALL COSTS... Best chemistry professor I've had all year. He truly cares about his students and wants to see everyone succeed. He posts practice exams with enough time before the test and makes it clear what will be tested. Lecture isn't "mandatory," but it helps to go as they are heavy with material and clicker problems.
Dr Hayashi is a GREAT. His lecutre notes are very clear & organized. Very nice, caring, & understanding. Responds to messages quick. First chem professor I've seen who doesnt try to trick you and is striaght to the point with his exam questions. Gives you all the resources to succeed. Everyone should be fine as long as you study his materials.
Hayashi is by far the best chem professor I have taken at Davis. Kind and understanding, office hours are helpful, clear expectations. Midterms reflect what is taught in class. Extended homework due dates for us too. Comments on his accent are fair, but I was fully able to understand him. Don't make that the reason you miss out on his class.
The man is amazing. No one should have any bad things to say about him. He precisely tells you exactly what to study for exams. The final was quite difficult because it was a common 2B final made by several professors. He did his best to pick out the exact materials we should focus on while most professors would blindly tell you to study everything
Hayashi is so caring and generous, maybe overly so. He'd extended many homework deadlines because students were stressed. His lectures are clear and thorough and he's open to questions. Slides are dense with info so take notes quickly or revisit recordings. I found the exams hard but fair. People overreact about his accent.
Very nice prof although with some accent. He is patient and kind for holding extra OH and review sessions. Explain chem concepts clearly and easy to accept.
Honestly, I really struggled in this class, but I'm so impressed with Dr. Hayashi's curve. Trust me, put in some effort and you'll be fine. He does have an accent, but as the quarter goes on, you get used to it. More than that, he is passionate about the subject and wants you to succeed in the course. Highly recommend!
Not a bad professor. He is super generous with homework extension deadlines and if you email him with questions he responds very quickly. However, the exams are VERY heavy on your grade. The midterms were similar to the practice tests, but the "all professor contribution" final was incredibly difficult. He curves but it doesn't save everyone study!
protect this man at all costs.
actually really cute and kind person but not very good at lecturing - he speaks in a monotone, which often makes it hard to keep focus during class. The class is a lot of derivations and applications of formulas, so as long as you understand/practice the equations, it is okay. Very straightforward and transparent with exam content
Kind, caring lecturer. His exams and curves are extremely fair, as well as his homework. He often gave extensions for OWL HW if someone asked for them. He had iClickers, but they were only worth 2% of the grade. He records lectures. Overall, I recommend taking CHE 2B with Hayashi!
Hayashi's lectures were horribly boring since he read directly off the slides 95% of the class. The other 5%, where he went over practice problems (that ended up being on the exam), was the only reason I really went to lecture. Exams aren't too bad if you drill the practice midterm/finals. Very nice guy tho, super accommodative to students.
This professor and these ratings are horrible. Does the bare minimum for the class. Slides are confusing, and is difficult to understand. I am watching his lectures online with subtitles, but I still have to teach myself because his lectures are useless. In-person, there is a collective dislike for this professor. Avoid, unless no choice
This professor gives very unclear instructions both in lectures and on test papers. If you take his class you are likely expected to self-teach and still fails his exams because how frustrating and confusing the way he makes exam questions are. It is true that he is a nice person, but to be a good professor is more than just being NICE.
At first I was intimidated by his strong accent but you begin to just get used to it. He explains topics well in my opinion. MY FAVORITE THING EVER was his powerpoint slides. The gen chem professors at the moment tend to just write fast notes in class for you to copy but Hayashi provides lecture slides and even posts them beforehand to look over.
His accent is sometimes obstructive, but otherwise, he's a good lecturer. Very much wants to see his students succeed; will provide more resources and more time for OWL assignments if asked. You better treat this man with respect, he is precious.
I think we all know how the gen chem department is here. Given that, Hayashi is a decent professor. Some complain about his accent, I think its fine. Uses clicker so lectures are definitely mandatory, typical gen chem difficulty and grading scale, curves fairly, does not assign too much Hw on OWL, labs and other support mostly depends on your TA.
Dr Hayashi is a very caring professor. Chemistry is a hard topic in general, but he is very understanding and takes his time to make sure students understand the topic (and is very accessible in his OHs). His accent is not a problem, you get used to it. Out of all the CHE2B professors, he was the most transparent and receptive about the final exam.
I have mixed feelings. The class was easier than 2A but sometimes its really hard to follow along with him. Theres a language barrier, kinda over the place sometimes, and neglects most important material. The stuff he does teach, he does it really well and helps you understand. Hes overall okay but you will have to teach yourself some things
God Bless this man. Please take him for Chem if you can.
Dr. Hayashi is the GOAT of chemistry. his lecture examples are extremely useful in terms of exam preparation. he always extends the owl hw as well. I found this class to be easier than che2a
The goat.
he's absolutely goated. a lot of ratings have comments about his accent but you get used to it and learn to understand. he does read off slides a bit but he does say additional useful information so listen attentively. gives practice exams. redo his iclicker and slide examples when studying and you'll be set. he also uploads zoom recordings of OHs
Really sweet! I genuinely like his lectures because he makes an effort to explain the /why/ behind concepts instead of just feeding them to us as they are. He also takes care in answering student questions. Take him if you can!
I think Hayashi is a very sweet and caring professor but I don't think his teaching is for everyone. There is a little bit of a language barrier and it was really hard to understand concepts because it was explained in a disorganized manner. Other than that he is a great professor just not my kind of learning preference.
Hayashi is a very nice person, but not a good lecturer due to his accent and boring slides. All learning will be outside of class. If you do the homework, discussion, and Enderle's practice tests, you will do fine. Midterms are relatively easy because he gives a practice exam nearly identical to an actual exam. Easier than Gulacar in 002A tho.
Bit of an accent, but very understandable. Lectures overall pretty good. Practice exams are a god send - exactly like midterms. HW extensions also very kind - essentially every hw was given one. Test averages are usually 70-80ish percent, so definitely study accordingly. And since averages are relatively high, curve's not crazy, C -> C+
Dr. Hayashi was a pretty good professor. His in-class examples are great and were helpful when studying. His lecture slides are honestly all you really need to know besides that though. Tests aren't bad at all, his practice tests are very good preparation for the actual exam. Seems like a good guy!
Accent was a bit difficult to understand at first and there is a bit of a language barrier. His practice tests are very similar to the actual exams so people do generally well (beware small curve). 2 Midterms, 1 Final. OWL assignments due when we finish lecturing each chapter.
Hayashi was a very good lecturer although each class had iClickers so attendance was mandatory as it was part of our grade. The practice tests were very similar to the real tests making the averages higher than other classes. But Overall I really enjoyed Hayashi and would take him again.
decent lecturer, lot less resources to study tho, but still doable. He's rlly nice and gives lots of hw extensions. practice tests are very similar to real tests, so do those and do enderle's practice tests and you'll be fine. his accent didn't pose an issue for me; I understood him fairly well. overall a good prof
Solid chem professor. A really kind and caring guy, but understanding his lectures was often a challenge (thick accent). Lecture recordings were more clear. The actual exams were very similar to the practice exams. Discussion AND lecture were mandatory. Consult Enderle's lecture notes and practice exams and you'll do good. Exam averages were high.
This man is an angel. You can tell he cares about his students. The homework load was very doable, maybe 10 to 20 questions every other week. He did go a bit slower, so we did have to speed up at the end, but he made sure that our exams were fair. Practice exams were very similar to tests. He even had a review session at the end of the quarter.
His accent can be hard to understand but just the slides were enough to study. As long you can understand all the concepts he has on his slides and you should be good to go. Final was almost just like practice final exam. Tests were straightforward. Iclicker was 4% but you could do it from anywhere. Lectures recorded. OH sessions were helpful!
Def easier than che 2a overall, Hayashi is very patient and sweet! Not required to read textbook, but his slides are a bit undetailed imo at times, so it def helped me understand the material better. I'd also recommend reviewing the lecture slides before class. Tests are reasonable & averages are higher than 2a so there is less of a curve (b- to b)
He was a solid lecturer, and his tests were fair, he did not have the craziest curves, but they were still solid, he had Iclickers to monitor attendance, but the drops the lowest few
Hayashi is a super sweet guy. His lectures are good. He does use iClicker so you have to attend most of lecture.
The lectures were occasionally difficult to understand, but the professor clearly wanted his students to succeed. I recommend using Enderle's material (lecture notes and practice questions) alongside with Hayashi's slides to get the best understanding. Material went by really fast at the end due to earlier slowdowns. Not a very strong curve.
Dr. Hayashi is an awesome professor, he has an accent but isn't hard to understand. He is very caring and kind. Very approachable and is great at explaining concepts. Two MT, one final, and 2 quizzes. The lowest quiz is dropped. HW and iClicker are easy points. P chem is a very difficult class, but Dr. Hayashi makes it bearable. Take him!!!!
Dr. Hayashi is excellent at teaching difficult material in an understandable way. While his exams and quizzes are challenging, they are fair and he prepares you well for them with an abundance of iClicker and example questions. Dr Hayashi is friendly, caring, and passionate about the subject material, which makes lecture much more exciting.
Prof Hayashi was a great lecturer. People complained about his accent but I didn't have trouble understanding (maybe because I have family with similar accents). He's open to questions and cares about his students. Take notes on lecture practice problems / iclickers bc those show up on midterms. Attend his review sessions. Overall great prof!
I took him winter quarter and really liked him! Homework usually wasn't long, and tests were very fair if you do the practice exam and go over the practice questions from class. Seems like a really nice guy and was very accommodating. Would recommend!
Professor Hayashi is a sweet, understanding lecturer. While his accent can be tricky, the slides and practice exams are very helpful. Attending class and review sessions is key. I also found unstuckstudy AI useful for exam prep.
Cutest Prof ever. Extremely understanding and constantly pushed back hw due dates. Gets behind often and goes very fast towards the last weeks before midterms/finals.
On top of having a really thick accent, he is a really bad lecturer. Would be ok if lecture attendance wasn't mandatory, but he does iClickers for points each lecture, which aren't simple at all and sometimes incorporate material we have just barely "learned". Curve is good but A is almost impossible (like 93% is still an A-).
If you struggle with chemistry this is definitely not for you. He is horrible in lecture and does not teach well if you are the type of person who learns best based off of how your teacher is in lecture.
He truly cares his students as he extends homework deadlines and intentionally making the midterms much easier than other chem professors(if you take a look at Enderle's tests) . I don't think its fair to blame him due to personal failure in studying because this is only an intro level chem class so maybe you are just not for it.
prob one of the best chem professor out there, tests are doable and the accent is being so exaggerated
If you're someone who learns best through lectures, I would not take Hayashi's class. He has a fairly thick accent and the content of the lectures is often disorganized. Despite this, it's clear that he's a kind man and his tests do come with a decent curve. I would take this class if you're confident you can teach yourself some of the material.
Very very kind professor who listens to every student's concerns. However, his lectures are difficult to understand. Discussion sessions are quite pointless as they just go over practice problems you can do yourself (most TAs provide an answer key after anyways). Chemistry exams are somewhat difficult, but quite nice curves.
Although his classes have large homework assignments once a week for "Chapter Mastery", they help you learn the material for the tests. The tests can be difficult but if you study the practice exams and do example problems, you'll be fine. He curves pretty well too. Sometimes he talks too fast, so it can be difficult to understand, but he's nice!
Hayashi is a good professor, and his accent is understandable, but beware of the 7:30 am lectures.
Iclicker so you have ti go to lectures but is super clear, his slides cotain all the good info in a very orgainzed manner, the sweetest guy, seriously take him if you can, so organized and clear.
there's sm criteria for the course but tbh it's expected bc it's chem. even if u do good on exams, if u fail lab then u fail the whole course; but exams weigh more for ur grade. used iclicker (graded) and was hard bc 7:30AM lect caught up to me. a lot of hw, calculations, writing for pre/post labs, and disc was mandatory. best curve ever tho.
Predictable exams, boring lectures but well-organized, amazing office hours. You will zone out during his lectures, but that's where the office hours come in. No matter how dumb the questions you ask, he never judges you and explains it slowly. Listen to his lectures and do the graded OWL homework, and A is easily possible
Dr. Hayashi has an accent but it is not difficult to understand. His lectures involve participation through iClicker problems and his lecture slides are organized and he updates them quickly if there are any mistakes.
Hayashi is honestly very understandable and his lecture slides are super well organized. 7:30am lectures can be difficult sometimes, but the in-class iClickers can be done from anywhere so take that as you will. Some say Enderle is a more entertaining lecturer, but his tests are 2-3x harder. Hayashi also gives a sweet curve.
Kind guy, took his 7am lec, so the hardest part was staying up. Iclicker problems but help boost your grade. Would extend hw due dates during exam times. Tests are pretty difficult so just study hard but his lectures are well done and homework isn't too bad. taking chem 2b with him next quarter
The homeworks and labs are practically completed and the exams are IDENTICAL to the practice exams he gives. The downside to this is 7:30 am lectures with iclicker worth 4%. Personally, I think it's worth it and would take Hayashi again...and I'm not a morning person (I missed 50% of lectures).
Hayashi has very clear lectures and will do one example problem and trust that you understand. Clearly very smart and gives partial credit, no cheat sheet for midterms or finals. Accent can make some words hard to pick up on but really not that bad.
Chem is hard but he does everything he can to help. Is very clear about what will be tested on, so studying is easy. Curve is extremely generous. Will always be willing to answer questions.
He is a very nice and caring person. He wants his students to succeed in the class. Tests aren't too bad because a lot of the content is from the iClicker and lectures. Overall great teacher!!
Two midterms and final. Midterms were fair (use the practice exams he gives to study!), but final turned out to be harder than expected. Very generous curve (pretty much a whole letter grade). Includes example problems in lectures, but also reads off of slides mostly. iClicker participation required, but he is willing to drop/extend hw deadlines.
Hayashi was a great teacher, even though he may be sometimes hard to understand you can tell he cares a lot. If you have a question he will go in depth if asked. He provided all the material needed to pass the exams, practice is your best friend. Attendance is mandatory due to iclickers, but if you pay attention in lecture you will succeed.
Good prof and actually cares about us like he wants us to do well. He gives a lot of practice material and you'll do well if you use it. Also nice curve bc 93% was an A+ and I've heard his midterms are easier than other profs (idk i haven't seen others) but we all take the same final and I got a 92 bc he preps us rlly well if you pay attention
Prof Hayashi is wonderful, the only reason I am not taking him for Chem2B is because I cannot do an early morning class again, and that is typically what he teaches. He cares deeply about his students and is a very kind and understanding professor. Homework was wonderful practice for tests.
Ignore what people say about the accent; it does not at all impede the lecture or communication. Appreciate the slideshow, considering some professors don't always provide that. Very good curve and passable class. iClicker during lectures. Cares about students, very encouraging. Downsides are very early lectures and hard to retain info.
Final was significantly harder than midterms. Use the enderle practice exams for the best preparation for exams/finals.
Professor Hayashi is not only a good professor but a good man. He is accessible outside of class at times and responds to emails quickly. The curve is good but expect a ton of homework that takes hours to complete, hard midterms, long labs, and late nights of no sleep to study or to get assignments finished. You get out what you put in for real.
Lectures are fast-paced, so pay attention to understand the material in class. Online homework assignments are given to grasp the class concepts which helps. Professor Hayashi has extended a few of the assignment due dates and has been accommodating. The class consists of two midterms and a final with very helpful practice tests.
The only bad thing I have to say about my time in CHE 002A with Hayashi is that it was at 7:30am, otherwise I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS. Hayashi is caring and super helpful, he makes sure to answer questions and had two review sessions this quarter, one before midterms and one before finals. He gives practice exams VERY similar to the exam before exam.
Yes. The curve saved me.
A very good professor that was always open, had plenty of practice problems for tests, and a very generous grading curve. The TA I was assigned was also very nice to talk too and easy to do labs with. Although difficult to remember everything as long as you make the mean on midterms and finals you'll end up with a B, I did not.
I love Professor Hayashi. Really, I do. My grade has nothing to do with him. I never understood the subject matter. My TA wasn't very helpful with this either. I could never do his office hours because I had other classes or work, and I fell behind by week 3. Do not take if you are busy and are going to need extra help.
genuinely cares about the students, sweetest man alive!
There was so much content to learn and I fell kinda behind but he was good at explaining and answering questions.
Solid professor. Lectures might be difficult for some people as he has an accent, but he explains it in a clear and helpful way. Tests are relatively easy so long as you study; I got a 61% on the first midterm and a 100% on the 2nd by simply reviewing the discussion worksheets, homework, and practice tests more. Discussions are basically useless.
Very clear lectures and an honest, kind instructor. His midterms are very fair, covering everything learned in class. His slides were based on the textbook, but you really only need slides. OH are helpful; he is very knowledgeable and ready to help all of his students. He's a great communicator. He uses iClicker, so you be in lecture.
My king. Incredibly nice and well organized, if you work hard you can definitely get a decent grade. Lectures are pretty boring and his explanations can be somewhat confusing the first time around, but he records them which makes it a lot easier to understand. Midterms are not exactly like the practice but are very very helpful. Highly recommend!!
Nice professor! I'll be taking him again for Chem2b. Was very clear on what would be on midterms/final. Final review session was also very helpful as it had VERY similar problems to the final. Don't be afraid to go to office hours if you're confused on a problem/topic, he's very understanding. Also my class had a very big curve (~79.5%=A-, 82%= A).
A very well structured class that makes materials extremely available and accessible. Professor Hayashi is a great lecturer that does a lot of practice problems which are helpful for exams. He does have an accent but I found it pretty easy to understand (I know that isn't the case for everyone) and he is extremely open to questions during lectures.
Hayashi explains things well and provides a lot of resources for learning. He does in class example problems and provides past exams for practice. Exams are both multiple choice and short-answer. Labs for this class are long, and the post-labs can be really tedious and hard, so be prepared to spend a lot of time on those. Class is very curved.
Lectures are very packed with information and can be better understood by listening to how he explains the concepts rather than rushing to copy slides down. Practice exams were posted for each of the 2 midterms and the final which are very beneficial to study. Understanding professor, and gives extensions on assignments when he feels necessary.
He was very sweet, explained everything well. Midterms were very similar to the in class examples and practice tests Does finals review and is willing to answer any questions.
if you don't know who to take for 2a, take Hayashi 100%. practice tests are the same as the real exams, just numbers changed. iclickers for attendance, but does examples that are exactly the questions on the test in class. wish i could take him for 2C.
Exams were pretty straight forward, get as many points in the midterms to not worry much about the final. Had a concussion in between 1st and 2nd midterm and was very flexible with HW extensions. The curve saves you, as long as you take time to study the material and understand it you'll be okay. Didn't get a B bc of my concussion.
Hayashi is a great professor. He's super straight forward w/ material and midterms are super similar to the practice tests he provides. His accent can be tough to understand sometimes, but he posts lecture recordings with subtitles. He's super understanding one-on-one and is really flexible with homework extensions. His curve carries, 50% is a C.
A little hard to understand during lectures as he has a thick accent, but I was still able to understand the concepts.
Excellent professor and office hours are super helpful. I-clicker attendance is mandatory. Lecture is good, and Professor Hayashi is very knowledgable and approachable.
Very nice professor, he gets through the material very fast/efficiently and his curve is really good.
Great professor. Super organized lecture slides. Although has accent, prof is super nice and reachable. Curve rly good, exam easy, no tricky questions. I ended up with a 92 or 93, but the curve brings me to A+. Barely any homework, aside from biweekly chapter mastery homework. You won't regret taking his class!!
Hayashi is an amazing professor, his accent is not that hard once you get used to it. He does go slow and then speed up towards midterms. His curve was nice and he is genuinely a caring guy. He answers all questions kindly in class and provides lots of material to study. Uses iClicker in class.
amazing lecturer, explains everything very clearly, and his exams are exactly like the practice exams and the examples he teaches in class. only downside is required attendance for iclicker points. also gives an amazing letter grade curve!
Very helpful in lectures such as doing practice problems in class. His curve is quite generous and is willing to answer student's questions. Tests are similar to practice exams which are provided. Course is clearly structured and grading is fair.
Hayashi is a super nice guy + decent lecturer. His accent is a little hard to understand, but that's easy to get around if you take notes before hand and focus on his words during lecture. His tests are pretty easy and the course has a nice curve, definitely not a bad option for che2A
hayashi the GOAT. His lectures are great and he explains everything so well. His exams are just like the practice exams. I retook chem 2A with him after failing Chamberlain's horrible chem 2A class. TAKE Hayashi!!!!
Dr. Hayashi was a caring professor who made sure to cover everything in detail. He was very accessible both in and out of class and if you attended lectures and did well on the homework, the test wasn't too bad.
10/10 would recommend. Hayashi is the best chem prof ever. I love his exam and lecture style. I would for sure take him again. A sweet and caring man
I clicker is annoying but everything else is chill
Hated the early morning class, but he was still a great teacher. Although with earlier classes he tends to get through material more efficiently. He explains things well, is a very sweet guy, and also curves like crazy. I got a 79% and that was still an A- 🙏.
Concepts taught very clearly, in-class examples and practice exams match actual exams very closely. Good at answering questions, during or after class. my goat
Hayashi is one of the sweetest professors in the chemistry department. He is so understanding. He opened two homework for me and passed the due date because I was struggling with school. He would like you to succeed and reply to emails INSANELY FAST. Truly the kindest man ever. bless his heart. CURVE IS INSANE the GOAT!
Had him for 2A and 2B. 2B avgs were a lot higher (mid 70s compared to mid 50s) so the curve was a lot less. Best advice to do well is do the practice exams bc they are REALLY similar to the actual midterms/final. You can also do the enderle practice exams as well. If you only focus on these, you can do very well.
I literally can't understand why the exam averages are so low (around 50%). Just pay attention during lectures and do homework thoroughly and try the practice exams, and you should be able to get an easy A. The midterms and final are nearly identical to the practice exams. Hayashi is an awesome person and professor. Take CHE 2A with him.
took him for both 2a and 2b his lectures were alright but he's tests weren't to bad great curve.
Best chem professor ever
Had him for 2A. GREAT prof; cares for his students, loves teaching the subject, and provides useful practice tests that are VERY similar to the real test/final. Only issue was that it was a 7:30am course and that he does iClickers (some are dropped!).
hayashi is one of the nicest chem professors IMO! he's super sweet, understanding, and wants his students to do well (every question was answered)! chem concepts were taught well and in-class practice problems were helpful and similar to the midterms. also offered a practice midterm for both 1 and 2 which were extremely similar to the actual thing!
Exams were easy and 2b is way easier than 2a. Because of that, the curve is not as generous as 2a. Lectures are straightforward whole class is straight forward. Just study the practice exam and example problems + concepts
He is a kind man, he gives good curve and he is always patient to answer any questions
heard he's well-respected since hes caring toward students & doesnt rlly have problems with extending hw deadlines but lecture attendance is basically mandatory unless u want to lose pts from lecture questions/practice problems... and i think all his lectures are morning so i ended up losing out on pts bc of that, also exam curves arent that good
He does iClicker so you should go to class but he drops the 4 lowest scores. He doesn't drop anything else but curves at the end. His exams are exactly like his homework and practice exams. His accent is not as bad as people say. As long as you study prior and not cram there is a high chance of passing with a B
Dr. Hayashi was very accommodating and friendly, and he did a good job with lectures, which was impressive because mine were at 7:30am. I never had any issue with his accent. You should attend lecture because the iClicker does count toward your grade. Two midterms and a final exam, and the practice exams he provides are an excellent study tool.
Basic Gen Chem Prof. Accent was pretty bad for me, but I just went to Enderle lectures. Tests are reasonable and match well with enderles. IClicker is 4% and 4 of them are dropped so you gotta go to class pretty often. Enderle lectures are insanely better, and the only benefit of taking Hayashi over him is that maybe people do worse in hayashi.
At first his accent was difficult to understand, but once you get used to it, he is a good professor and does a great job teaching the course, but regardless the course is difficult since it's chemistry.
I had Professor Hayashi for both 2A and 2B and I can confidently say that his class was great. The main issue I had was waking up early to go to lectures, but I hardly had any issues with this class outside of that. Hayashi gives a lot of exam prep and is very forgiving if you ever do miss lectures. If you've taken chem before, take his class!
Explains topics concisely. Easy to follow during lectures; worked examples during lecture and is very patient with questions. Exams are nearly identical to his practice exams.
Dr. Hayashi explained concepts and problems well in class, good pace and handwriting, and was patient with answering questions. Absolutely do the practice exams (and worksheets), go to OH (his or TAs) if you have questions, and the real exams are very doable and fair. Not much of a curve since students do well. Would highly recommend!
he is very kind, I think his accent is ok, and his exam is very similar to his practice. He is the goat of che 2a
Hayashi is a great professor! Took him for both CHE 2A and 2B, and have no regrets about my choice. His lectures and tests mostly align, class time feels well spent, and the curve is quite generous. Chemistry is not my strong suit by any means, but he made the class something to look forward to, even at 7:30 in the morning.
Hayashi is great, such a caring and sweet guy who wants you to succeed and will even guide you in a problem to the right answer. Great amount of homework, yet I would say lectures can be fast-paced and heavy sometimes. Will push HW deadlines! His practices are pretty straightforward and truly reflect what will be on the exams :) Take him if you can
Hayashi the 🐐 Take him if you can! His accent is not as bad as people say it is and understandable. If u have trouble listening to him, he has slides and a recording of the lectures. His exams are difficult but doable if you pay attention during lecture and actually do the work. 10/10 recommend, made me dread chemistry less
Hayashi explains concepts and problems well. His lectures are a bit heavy, with a lot of info packed into one session, but they are manageable. His accent takes a little getting used to, but it's not bad. Lecture slides are posted on Canvas and his practice exams are very similar to his actual exams. Definitely one of the better chem professors.
I had che 2a knowledge from taking AP chemistry in highschool. It was a life saver as I had no clue what he was saying. Only did well due to prior knowledge and owl assignments. This class is very doable to receive an A with very high curves, just don't underestimate it.
I took Dr. Hayashi for 2A & 2B, both classes were good. The lectures were pretty straightforward but sometimes it was hard to keep up in class with examples. The tests make sense and usually follow examples from the lecture. Nice fat curve for every exam so there's no stress over challenging tests. He's a very nice guy, solid class
He is very nice and teaches well; he has a bit of an accent, but you get used to it pretty quickly. Most of his exams are either similar or almost the same as the practice exams, and he curves the class pretty well, so most students pass. I only went to office hours for review sessions, but he is super nice and helpful every time.
Graded iClicker but can be done outside of class lowest like 3-4 dropped. Records lectures & posts slides. 2 Midterms, 1 Final. Study the practice exams, worksheets, and previous exams and you'll be good for the exams. Personally felt that there isn't a lot of time for exams, never was able to double check answers. Curved so final grade 81% is A.
Pros: Great curve, easy labs (2B), not much HW Cons: tough accent, mandatory long lectures, not much practice available for exams Take gulacar instead in you can
his practice tests are pretty much identical to the actual tests, the final was pretty rough, but as long as you do the practice tests and practice problems in the lecture slides, you'll be fine.
Chose Hayashi after failing miserably in Farahats class and oh my god the difference is insane! Please if you have the chance take Hayashi instead!!! Lecture heavy but very straight forward and a nice curve at the end. His exams are just like the practice, if you study you will pass.
I'm actually spiraling, do NOT take this class in SS, first off they cram hella content in the last few lectures, and you basically have a couple days to "figure it out" for the final. And then the post-labs are DREADFUL. you have two labs per week, and they make you spend so much time doing BS calculations. AVOID!!!
Hayashi is the best prof I've ever had while at UCD. His lectures were phenomenal. He does practice problems and the HW was so informative and taught me well. I always felt like I could never do good in a STEM course and Hayashi's course proved me wrong! Study the practice exams and you'll do great. I hope you choose Hayashi, he's amazing!
His lectures were amazing, and powerpoints were very clear and straightforward. On top of that, the homework and practice material directly correlated to the exams! The curve was really good, I guess people didn't do so well, even though almost all of the questions have showed up before. I recommend doing his old in-class examples to practice.
I took the class over the summer, it was dense because it was under 6 weeks. I wouldn't recommend if you dont have pervious knowldege but overall a really good teacher. Practice tests are almost the same as in real exams and practice problems in class also related to exams. Do HW, practice, do practice exams, and you'll pass.
Greatly recommend Dr. Hayashi. He is super approachable and accessible during office hours, and his exams are similar to practice provided. I can tell he truly cares about students doing well in his class, you just need to take the initiative to put time outside of class studying to ensure you do well.
Lectures aren't the most exciting, but his examples & for-attendance iclickers are explained well and are a preview of whats on exams. Each practice and actual exam/quiz are basically identical aside from possibly harder mcqs. Overall a simple & straightforward prof where you're guaranteed a good grade if you just practice material regularly.
Professor Hayashi is a really good one.I took his Chem 2 B class in the spring, and I love the way he curves the grades after every exam; by the end of the quarter, there's an overall curve. Also, if you cannot understand him, go to your TA, as they can explain everything. However, Hayashi makes it somewhat challenging to know because it's complex.
He's the GOAT ❗❗ ❗
Prof Hayashi might be the best gen chem prof out there (haven't taken Enderle yet), but seriously, I mean this man is the GOAT.
he's super sweet! office hours are a little slim but he's always there and on time when he is :)) i really appreciated the lengths he went to cover a lot of material. his exams are pretty verbatim to the practice ones.
his accent isn't as bad as people make it out to be, he is definitely understandable. the issue is that you have to put your effort into either understanding the chemistry, or understanding him. his lectures aren't very engaging and are quite dry of personality, but the content of the class itself is very reasonable.
Hayashi is pretty good and his accent is not as difficult as people claim. Only complaint is that his lectures are pretty boring and ardous to listen to; I usually rely on youtube or reviewing notes rather than rewatching lectures. Genuinely a really nice guy, and the content is doable if you study hard.
Need to take his class! Most of the practice problems in the lecture slides will be on the exams! HE'S THE GOAT bc his practice exams are identical to his real exams with different number values.
TAKE HIM. The practice exams that he posts are basically identical to the actual exams. Many of the questions are very similar to the iClicker questions that he does in class. His accent can be hard to understand at first but trust me you will get used to it very quickly. He is very kind and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students.
Hayashi was the best! Chemistry can be a hard subject for some but he really put in the effort to teach everything carefully. The exams were really similar to the practice exams, I would totally recommend this class!!
The course was easy but I felt as though the quality of education I received wasn't great (for me, there was no difference between showing up to lecture vs. staying home to teach myself the material from the lecture slides). All tests in the course were quite easy, so long as you study.
His practice tests are pretty similar to the real thing, for the midterms at least. The only thing is he uses Iclicker that takes your location- you have to be in the hall. Course wasn't that hellish but just because of the location I wouldn't retake.
hayashi is a super awesome prof! he's got a lot of enthusiasm, and while his accent can be sometimes hard to pick up, his explanations for subjects are very thorough. i took che2a and i had a difficult time but there's not much you could do with a ton of content being crammed into the class. but he manages to explain things clearly :)
Professor Hayashi is really good at explaining content and prepares students very well for exams (many practice tests and problems that are similar to midterms). Attendance is graded through iClicker, but I found this a helpful incentive to attend lecture, and a nice boost for the overall grade. Overall nice guy, would highly recommend.
Definitely underrated. Prof. Hayashi is one of the best professor I ever have. He explain concept clear, have easy-to-read and understand slide, provide real exam-liked practice exam and geniunely explain concepts in office hours. By carefully going over hw, practice exams and finish all the lab work his course should be an easy A.
Dr. Hayashi was the best professor I had this quarter! He cared a lot about his students and made sure everyone was well prepared for the exams. His exams had no surprise material and (imo) easier than the homework problems. His accent is not hard to understand at all, don't listen to other RMP reviews. I wish I could have him again for Chem 2B.
Hayshi provides mant practice problems through examples in class, the OWL homework, discussion wksts, and zoom reviews before exams. He thoroughly goes over practice problems and is willing to answer questions. Practice exams were similar to the actual exam but he requires lecture attendance via iClicker. Good prof to have as a 1st year
He is very kind and reasonable, and his lectures were very helpful. Lots of examples during lecture that mirrored problems on exams. Iclicker was used for participation most classes. The class is difficult and required lots of time and effort but Dr. Hayashi is a great prof! (Also has a decent curve!)
He's alright. I wouldn't say he's the best or the worst, a good average. His lectures weren't that engaging, I rarely felt motivated to go to class. I'd teach myself most the material because the lectures were lacking the teaching element. Don't take him if you're trying to learn, I mainly took him because I heard about his good curve.
His accent can be confusing in lecture but watch lecture recordings if you're confused. His midterms are the easiest compared to all of the other professors and exactly like the practice midterms. The owl homework assignments are helpful in learning/understanding the basic concepts. Lock in for midterms because the final is harder.
Hayashi was an amazing professor for my first Davis chem class! I believe that anyone can succeed in his class if you work hard enough. His practice tests were just like the midterms and his practice final was very similar to the final exam! This is a difficult course but he makes it manageable.
-lectures were ok, pacing varied (content similar to if you'd taken AP chem before) -iClicker during lecture that is location locked -midterms exactly like practice on Canvas -final was harder and there was even some content we didn't fully cover that was on final, but overall ok -didn't know curve until end of quarter, but pretty generous
