easy, easy grading, but if you understand what's she's writing on the board, you've probably also been struck by lightening and won the lottery.
she is an idiot. if you like the ocean take this class; otherwise find another science requirement. she thinks we are all freaking oceanography majors, if anything she makes you hate it more. She also has trouble keeping you informed of what is going on.
Do NOT take this class--you will end up doing 100 times the work you thought just to try to pass. Tests are impossible and related to nothing on the videos or book. she gives a lot of extra credit options, but that is because it is the only way to pass.
This is the hardest, most time-consuming class that's not even in my major. The worst thing is that studying hard doesn't even pay off because her tests have few questions pertinent to the study material.
she is not a well-organized tutor and her drawing is unable to read as same as her words
The text book is a very poorly-written one i ever have in my life. If WSU still use the same text book in coming year, I suggest you guy DON'T choose geology at all. The tutor is also bad.
As an introductory course, it should be clear and precise which you will find NONE of these features in this course. Leave it alone, don't even want to touch it. It is terrible for student as you will meet Ms Jackman, an unorganized tutor you ever meet in your college life. Good Luck, Folks !!!!
Wow,I think I am the only one who found this class easy. I am not a geology major, and really didn't know what geology was about before I got in the class. Tests are solely lecture based and you get a half sheet of paper, so go to class every day and put your notes on the half sheet. She curves easy
I took this as a telecourse. She is the most unorganized crazy women I have ever had for a teacher. She doesnt grade anything until the last week of the semester so you don't know where you stand until it is too late. It is a pretty hard class, watch the videos and read the book, there are definitely easier geology classes out there!
Do not take this professor if you can POSSIBLY get around it. I studied more than I ever have in my life and got my first C since middle school
I took this class as a telecourse. As long as you read the textbook the tests are fairly easy. If you don't read the textbook you will have problems. There are extra credit oppurtunities for people who do bad on the tests.
A video class so not much time for lecture, but she is very knowledgable and tries to copver as much as possible in the time on campus. You need to do a lot of studying on your own or you will hate it.
Oceanography was a pretty easy class. Watch the videos, and read the chapter outlines on the book's website. I didn't even buy the book. She offers quite a bit of extra credit... and drops the lowest quiz score. Didn't put too much effort in, but still managed a B out of the class.
Watch the tapes and read the textbook the material will be on the tests. I would not recommend this class. I worked hard and got an A but really took nothing from the class.
I found this teacher to be pretty flighty. On our final, only 40 tests were printed for 90 people which means people shared tests and it wasnt at all productive for learning. The study guides are also extremely long. The teacher is nice but not always dependable. Her grading methods arent exactly clear either.
I had her in a presession. She was understandable and nice. The tests were hard, used material from the book.
Very comfortable teaching style.
She will try hard to help folks understand--but they have to try to learn.
I've never seen a class like this in all my college career. Her study guides are so long it would take a normal 8 hour work day to complete them. Then, most of the material isn't on the test. She thinks she is going to turn everyone into a scientist when most of the students were taking this class to fill a science requirement. This is the most hor
such a nice prof... if a student doesn't understand... they are brain dead!!!
Uh.. she doesn't explain anything. her test are insane long and her study guides take an enitre weekend. Seriously for a gen ed class test like that are not necessary.
She was totally unprepared for class. Rarely lectured on what she actually put on the test. Reviews were far too complicated and intimdating. She is a great scientist, no doubt, very knowledgeable, but she needs to stay in the field and out of the classroom!
I almost didn't take this class because of earlkier comments but it was great and very relevant. She was clear and added lots of interesting extra stories and examples. I'm taking her class next semester and might change my major

Her Ocean. 310 summer class went very fast, only 4 weeks. Thus, you had to learn a whole lot in a very little time. However, if you put in the effort, read the chapters, and watch the videos you will do well. The study guides for the exams were very long, they took me forever to complete. Overall, she's a great teacher. Just be ready to study a lot!!
This class is very interesting. But I don't know where the test questions came from. Its very time consuming for just one class.
I took the Geology 102 presession and it was interesting. It was alot of material for a presession but it was doable. Make sure you do the study guide. Its alot of questions but it helps alot. She lets you use 1 page of notes on the test which you need to do cause its alot of material. I like her, she was very nice and neat!
Actually, she is horrible. Study guides are worthless, regardless of how much you put on it. Don't waste time studying, nothing will help. Her exam questions are nothing from the slides, notes anything... yea.
i've taken jackman for 2 courses now and overall i'd say she's pretty good. lecture is typically 2 hours though and she gets off topic easily and tends to never end class on time, her lecture time ALWAYS spilled over into lab time. she gives you chances to obtain tons of extra credit. expect to pretty much read your entire text book, and huge tests
I took the 4 week summer class and going to class was a waste of time. She spent most of the lecture time going on about irrelevant things and her Powerpoints look like they've been prepared by a child. Even though our tests were only 65 questions, our study guides were 7-11 pages long. Pretty useless as a teacher.
Made class fun and gave very good lectures. Offered many opportunities for extra credit, but you really don't need it if you just read the assigned chapters and watch the videos.
Time consuming! She is an interesting teacher, but if you want an A- be prepared to study A LOT. Her study guides are usually 8+ pages.
Terrible class, study guides are crazy long and she would post them 2 days before the test. Also, thought I was going to learn something? Waste of time and $$$
She was very confusing in her lectures and was not organized. She also lost part of my test and is still looking for it. I don't understand how you can lose part of a test! Do not take this class from this professor
Do not take this class if you can avoid it. The class averages on the tests are D- every single time. Her curves are only around 5 points, it doesn't register to her that the class is doing poorly. She doesn't count your assignments as a grade but docks if they aren't turned in. Gives minuses but not pluses.
She was very confusing in her lectures and her powerpoints were useless. She also had a hard time submitting reviews/study guides on BlackBoard and they're so incredibly long that its pointless to do it. The SI was very helpful for the class but she didn't show up for the review for the finals at all. Do not take this class.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Loses your assignments, gives IMPOSSIBLE tests and the class averages prove it. Assigns things that add up to little points and is extremely disorganized.
Boring class, I didn't go or ended up falling asleep most of the time. The tests are super long and reviews are useless! She is no help whatsoever and does not listen to the class. She wasted 40 minutes of our final to lecture about things not on the test!
BORING class. VERY unorganized. She doesn't even grade anything till after the last day of class, so you have no idea how you're doing in her class...except the tests. You can see your test scores within a few days or so. But that's all you have to base your grade off of until the final. Bottom line -- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Super boring. She doesn't really teach much, it's mostly her just rambling on every day. Tests were long, reviews don't help. The only way I made it through was by having a little common sense. If you don't already know some about geology, you may be in trouble. If you have an interest in this class, take it from someone else.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Rambled on about nothing all class, got nothing out of the lectures except one day she rambled on for 20 minutes about using birth control..in geology class. Test were almost impossible, study guides were useless and 9+ pages and only posted them a couple days before a test. Lost assignments and test multiple times.
Rambling is a problem but I found it relevant and for the most part interesting. This is not a high school (or freshman) type of class. The professor expects you to learn the material. A few items on the review sheets were hard to find. Allowed 5.5 x 8 sheet for notes on tests. Can you write small?
Very easy class. I didn't pay attention at all in class and got over 100%. Tests aren't too long, but don't expect to be gone in 15 minutes either. She lets you use a help sheet on tests. Reading the bbok and paying attention to the movies is all you have to do. Reviewing the slides may or may not help.
Pretty easy & not too time consuming, in my opinion. I read the book & watched the videos and that's it. I didn't attend every class, didn't do assignments (only made up 5% of the grade), and didn't use the study guides. This might not work for others - everyone learns differently. There is opportunity for extra credit if you need it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She makes it a point to make the class impossible. She said several times in class " Just bc this is a low level class doesn't mean it will be easy". I don't need it to be easy,I need her to learn to teach!! Disorganized and note taking is hard to do, bc all she does is go on and on about things that will not be on the test.
Excellent background, she's been all over the world and knows what she's talking about.
I took oceanology and environmental science or somethin from her. YOU HAVE TO READ! She finds the most random things in the book to test over. Her voice gets old BUT you can tell she REALLY knows her stuff.
She is very knowledgable about the subject and will try to make sure you understand the information. Very sweet lady, easy to understand. Lets you use 1/2 sheet of notes on tests, full sheet on final. I definitely recommend taking Oceanography from her. I received an A- and didn't spend too much time studying.
Jackman is extraordinarily intelligent and knowledgable, but a woefully poor speaker. She often finds herself lost in tangents and struggles to get back on track with course material, making note-taking nigh impossible. She is, however, very willing to help you understand anything you'd like 1-on-1 and she's very personable and easy to talk with.
This class was very unoranized! The lab was not consistent with the lecture, and the lab was poorly organized. People were always confused, and the professor never responded to any emails I sent. I went to every class, but I don't think it was worth it. This class is for people who want to avoid taking chemistry or physics classes but need science
Excellent experience with a variety of interesting topics. Tons of extra credit opportunities, and the test isn't hard as long as you read a bit.
Boring. Pointless. She spent all of class talking about her views on env. issues and cow farts. She has said that she even bores herself. I hated going to class. Her tests had nothing to do with lecture. I think she just enjoyed having a captive audience. I just went to the SI sessions. That was a much better use of my time. Easy class, but stupid.
SO BORING. Went to class once a week and never listened. GO TO SI. Instructor knows her stuff and practically gives you all the answers so you get an A on tests. Lets you use half page front/back cheat sheet on tests and full page front/back cheat sheet on final. Very unorganized and monotonic voice so hard to follow along
By far the worst professor I have had IN MY LIFE. Monotone lectures, lectures are extremely confusing, off topic, and have NOTHING to do with the exams. AVOID THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
This class is worthless. I am a senior with a 3.9 Grade Point Average and I expect this class to be my first flunking grade. I've studied for days preparing for the midterm for this course, however, the material in the book and presented during lecture is not even relevant to the exam. I hear the midterm is the same. Avoid this course.
Please do not take this class from her! I am a very studious person, but I have not met any teacher so disorganized, unhelpful, and confused like her. Lectures are hard to understand and do not correlate with the book for the exams. Take this class elsewhere or with someone else.
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. I made an account on here just to warn other about her. Extremely unorgnized. Lecture is just her rambling. Semester ends in 3 weeks and no grades posted on blackboard yet. She lost the essay part of our first test. She should not be a teacher. Doesnt even have PhD
I will never take a class from her again. She is very disorganized. Next week is finals week and she still hasn't graded assignments from January including tests. I want to get a B but I have no idea where I stand in this class because she hasn't given me any feedback. I would not recommend her to anyone.
All she did was lecture from power point slides. She was always confused on where she was and what she was doing. The power points did not match the stuff in the book. Her test were never from the lectures and very hard.
The course I took was actually a telecourse so we only met every other Wednesday for a brief review and a test. She explained things well but was horribly unorganized. Several of her tests had errors and right answers were marked wrong. Keep up with the reading and watch the videos. She offers plenty of easy extra credit opportunities as well.
She was difficult and didn't explain things well. Her powerpoints are useless because they're wordy and it's difficult to take notes from. Her class wasn't enjoyable to sit through all semester.
She is very intelligent. If you think that her class is too difficult, then you're not doing your job as a student and reading the material. She is a wonderful, nice woman and knows a thing or two about geology. I respect her a lot.
Her lectures are all over the place because she is extremely smart so it is hard to follow. As long as you go to the SI sessions you will be fine!
The class I took was in a lecture hall, so of course it was a large class. Mrs. Jackman's lectures always take full class time and are very informational. She uses many personal anecdotes and understands what she is teaching very well. She loves student input and questions during lecture. If you're a good test taker and student, you'll be fine!
This is the absolute worst class I have taken at WSU. I am a good student, but this class makes me feel like a toddler. Her lectures are incredibly long, boring, and uninformative. Little to no help. Study guides are several pages long and her lecture slides are no help. For a required class, she should not be the only one teaching it.
Absolutely impossible to understand her lectures. She is all over the place and does not pause to make sure students are getting what she says. PowerPoints highly useless; jumbled amount of information impossible to take note on. Way too easy to fall asleep in that class. I went entire periods without learning a single thing. Do not take.
I would not recommend taking this course. While the professor is very knowledgeable, she's scattered. She goes off on tangents not relevant to the subject matter quite often, forgets to upload study material in a timely manner, and is not the best at communicating. It's an entry level class, but she treats it like a 600 level course. Save yourself.
Do not be fooled by all the bad comments. This class is required for many bs majors (phycology). Easiest class ever. Show up listen leave. If you put in the effort to come to class you'll get an A. 4 media reports is all the HW you have the rest is extra credit. She is so crazy but so knowledgeable. Her stories are amazing to hear and interesting.
Took as a Tele-course. Read the Chapters and Watch the videos. Tests are ok but curved so it is easy. Jackman is very smart and has some of the wildest stories. She is a very interesting person and A GREAT TEACHER. The way she runs her class I wish every teacher would. Little HW, curved tests, extra credit alot, puts it on you to learn what u want
Ms. Jackman is not technology savvy. I took Oceanography over the summer. Yes I would recommend the book, get the 7th edition instead of the newest one, because she still test from the 7th edition. She does not email back quick enough. And she usual cannot not answer question outside of geology. She does curve and add extra points.
She lets you have a half page of notes for 2 of the three tests and the third test is a take-home test. You could turn in your homework (which is very rarely) two weeks late and she will still give you full credit. She also gives a study guide for the test, but the study guide has even more information than you need.
You take a test every class, however, she doesn't put the powerpoints on blackboard until the day of the class so you literally have to cram study for every test. Of course, the textbook is an ok resource for studying but her powerpoints are far different from the book. Also test questions are worded very weird.
Issues in Marine Environments. Easiest class ever. Very fun set up. Lots of easy presentations, just make little powerpoint and read it. Jackman cares about you learning and not so much as busy bs work. Best teacher I have had at WSU tests are super easy had two open book, take home midterm and final. Made a salt water fish tank. Cool field trips.
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. Needed it for a prereq class. There is a online textbook supplement that is required by instructor. She used it ONE time. Extra $100 gone. If you're lucky you might get to see powerpoints from lectures 2 weeks later. doesn't give you time to take notes. goes through slides too fast. take at your own peril
She gives interesting lectures and will talk to you in class about your concerns. She takes forever to respond to emails. Her homework assignments are not relevant to the material. Her tests are extremely long and difficult and her lectures cover nothing on the test, so it is all your own effort in reading the textbook.
Lectures are very interesting and relate directly to the exams. Reading the book can help with exams. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Homework is 4 media reports graded on completion. Exams are multiple choice with a short essay. Easy class if you pay attention. She posts slides and reviews online. She is a great person and great instructor
She knows what she is talking about, she has a lot of experience in the field. Tests are a bit hard, but if you pay attention to the slides, lecture, and book it's not that bad. Asking questions in class makes the lectures 100x more interesting.
She offers lots of extra credit which helps your grade a lot! Her lectures are fine, but if you're not good in science study a lot! The study guides were too long and the PowerPoints helped a bit. The book is necessary and make sure to read many times and take notes. She might do pop quizzes if class doesn't answer during review. SI wasn't helpful.
The course was not too difficult and had some very interesting content. Lots of lectures, even the associated "lab" (which I had with a different prof) was usually just review of the lecture rather than an actual lab. Tests are mostly MC, short answer, and 1 essay. You get to use a sheet of notes. Beware that this course is 95% earth and 5% space.
This class has been infuriating. The lectures are long and rushed. She says information has been said for the exam and sometimes that is not true. Some topics in the exam are very tiny details from lecture and are worded weirdly. I take notes, haven't missed a lecture, understand everything, and still struggle. She never responded to any emails.
Hardest exams ever
It wasn't horrible but definitely had its moments. I attended every lecture. She is a very slow grader. She hadn't put in any grades until after we took the final. Assignments are easy and she offers extra credit. Tests not so much. She does give out study guides and they are very long. Tests include a lot of small tiny details from lecture.
This professor is a very nice person but is a very disorganized teacher. If you are someone who values their grades throughout the semester, do not take her. She won't have a single grade in until they are due. If you pay attention in class, you will do good.
She put grades in almost two weeks after I took her final. She is extremely disorganized and never responds to emails. She is a nice person, but having her as a teacher is super stressful. She looses a lot of assignments, and since she doesn't like anything via email you have to redo everything she looses.
I have taken multiple classes with Toni, as per the requirements of my previous major. I switched my major to something else because the geology classes taught by her are so repetitive! She reuses the same PowerPoints, lectures, and even exams. There was one class (not GEOL 300) where she did not print the final exam until the date/time of finals.
