Not clear on quizzes, seemed to grade according to her mood.
Nice, but sometimes unfair. I might be judging her mean because the class sucks
she knows her material well. very into grammer. Watch your mistakes.
Hardest class I ever took, but it was so rewarding. She is a great teacher.
She thinks everyone's a film and video major.
PUNCTUATION!!! watch your butt!! Film students only, and prepare for term paper
Very moody if you don't do your work her way its wrong. Her opinion is final!
One of the best classes I've taken. She made it interesting, friendly, but challeng
Good professor, expects a lot but its worth it
Couldn't stand her, will avoid at all costs!
Friendly, helpful, learned a lot. Grades hard!
Excellent professor. Knows what she's talking about and you will also.
Very hard grading wise but learned a lot from class. Great teacher--take if can!
Hard class, tough grader. Learned a lot though. Has good lectures--very clear.

Interesting class, learn lots, write lots. She's nice and knows her material.
totally turned me off to film program at Grand Valley.
Knows stuff for this class, be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing.
nice class if you like History.
Friendly but way too tough of a grader for a gen. ed. Way too many papers.
Good teacher. Clear. Precise and interested in material.
good prof. grades hard, but you learn a lot. enjoyed the class
Interesting class, lots of papers but they're pretty easy.

Always found flaws in my work even if was it was my best work. Avoid if u can.
Very nice prof, fun class if you like Nuclear Bombs.
a little monotone, way too many papers, not a good gen ed.
Be ready to write papers and read alot. Grades hard on papers. Learned lots!
Hated her, she made me want to become a math major!!!!!!
TOO MANY PAPERS! She said herself she hardly ever gives A's on them...avoid!!!
Way to many papers, she grades tough on papers-she should be a writing teacher
Lots of papers for a Gen Ed. Still liked the class though
She is power hungry. She is the one and only person on earth who will check to see if your sources are cited correctly. I mistakenly cited the opposite page once, and she gave me a D in the class, and threatened to take me to the dean. No exaggeration.
She is a mean person. often laughing at you, or cutting you off in class. Thinks she vastly superior to you in all ways. She grades harshly, and even considers a misplaces coma in cite plagarism. a little over the top.
She was a wonderful Prof who was very considerate of everyone. Her papers are not hard at all and she grades them easily. A great woman.
This woman is an excellent professor and she is my role model. If you don't know how to write, think, or are just stupid in general, clearly her classes are not for you, so go home. You will learn so much not just about the material, but also how to be critical.
Tough but fair. Not impossible to get an A, but it will take a good amount of work.
The first exam was fair. But the final was impossible. She expected us to remember way too many names. Even if you are not interested in theory, if you pretend to be in your papers and participate in class you should do well.
a great person, takes time to help students, has to deal with a lot of whiny little babies who don't respect her
She grades essays and quizes harshly.
I enjoyed this class a great deal. She is very knowledgable about film and is just a nice person. She's no push over, but she does have a soft spot for her students. I thought she was fine.
Assigns tons of work all the time, and gives short deadlines. Harsh grader, can be very rude. A lot of folks call her "the wicked witch of the west" for good reason. Avoid!
I love this teacher. I've had her twice now, and yes she does grade hard, but for good reason. She really does teach you, and she teaches you a lot. You'll work hard in her class, but you'll earn your grade and be proud of it. I'm planning on taking a 3rd class of hers.
If you're looking for an easy Art gen ed. take something else. She's a pretty tough grader and expects a lot in papers, presentations and tests. She can be kind of rude and lacks patience. Assignments are sometimes unclear.
Great teacher. The class is interesting and the grading is fair. Do the work and you will be fine.
Very harsh grader on papers, but she teaches you how to write with clarity. You will have to work your butt off to get a decent grade in this class. If you are looking for an easy A this prof is not for you.
She is a really nice person but her class is way more work then it is worth, she takes all the fun out of film. If you enjoy film dont take the class because she will ruin it for you.
I liked her alot. She really takes interest in her students education. If you're looking to get by easily without learning anything - then don't take her. She's really easy to talk to and will help you out but she does grade hard so stay on the ball.
A wonderful and inspiring woman, she pushes her students to produce their best work and take an interest in their education. She will teach you to be diligent and think critically. She has a great personality and engages students in class. Be prepared to give a lot and take away so much more.
Toni is a great professor. A lot of people complain that she is too tough, but I've never had trouble earning good grades in her classes. She is VERY knowledgable about film theory and history. Attend class, pay attention, take notes, and you will learn A LOT. Great Prof!
a ton of reading for a summer course. Group work. Very harsh grader on paper and essay exams. Very good prof though, and super awesome class.
When it comes to Toni it's almost impossible to get better than a B on a paper. She's very harsh in that aspect and they'll consume a great deal of your time. That being said the class itself is very interesting and engaging to listen to. She's one of the most intellegent people you'll meet. Take her if you're up for it, but don't expect an A.
I don't know what her criteria is for grading papers but whatever it is, it is ridiculous. I always got the exact grade (B-) on every paper. Class itself is 2 hours long and pretty boring. Some of her choices of films however are pretty interesting. Overall, I suggest you try finding someone else before settling with her.
there is a lot of reading but it helps you understand the types of films you watch in class, also helpful when writing papers. some film's are kind of boring but others are really interesting. the exams aren't to tough. the papers are hard but they get you ready to write other film papers. toni is also willing to help and does want you to well.
I did not know how to write until I took this class! Expect plenty of revision work on your papers, but realize the experience will be very rewarding.
Half the films sucked because they weren't appropriate for the class. This isn't a history class but she teaches it like it is. Toni is tough and I thought the class was a waste. I didn't feel like I learned much but it's pretty much required as a film major. Lots of papers, midterm was extremely hard, as well as the final.
Do not take this class with her! she is ridiculous. I am a straight A history major. and i'm a senior. and she's nuts. She only gives 75 minutes for a 8 short answer (paragraph each) and 3 essay (full essay. not 5 paragraph high school kind) exam. it was nuts. for a gen ed. she was terrible. she's rude and makes it known shes tenured.
Prof. Perrine tries to pack too much into a summer course. 8 short and 3 long essays is just too much for a final exam if she wants DETAIL (which she does). She means well, knows the subject, and tries to help, but your grade will likely suffer taking this course.
Toni makes you put fourth your best work, but you'll thank her for it the long run. I thought I was going to get a B in the class an ended up with an A-. Basically if you're truly committed to being a student she's awesome.
Really makes you work for your grade; if you're looking for an easy theme course, LIB 345 isn't it. The workload isn't tremendous, but it's no blowoff, either; you'll want to keep ahead in your readings for debate activities, and while you don't need to do much outside research, you'll definitely need to have good familiarity with the material.
This Professor grades depending takes point off depending on your grammar. There were two paper as easy as it sounded it was a challenge. Text book was not used in class but required for papers and exams. Exams are difficult because she will ask the significance of a person she talked about and she will talk of many.
interesting class but tough. DO THE READINGS it will save your life. Do well to make good notes because she will not post power points for you to look at, also if you can get ahold of the movies you watch in advance to boost your notes DO IT its a big help. Shes very honest with her teaching and dosnt B.S anything. Over all good class.
this class is awesome if you like learning everything there is to know about nuclear bombs but it sucks for a gen-ed cuz its not easy. tries to talk about building a bomb, yet she knows nothing about basic science. super-hard grader on assignments and takes FOREVER to return stuff back. take for credit/no credit if you can or just avoid period.
She needs to put more work into correcting and follow up. You aren't just getting paid to show up and teach--what about getting our stuff back to us in a timely manner and prepping for class more. I think she tries to give low grades because someone from above told her to do so.
She's a very tough grader, but she will always teach you how to earn the grade you want if you make sure to ask for help. She was extremely helpful and understanding, and tried very hard to make the class informative and interesting. This class is required, but feels like a repeat of Modes/American Cinema. It was quite interesting.
Extremely knowledgeable - she definitely knows her stuff. Always answers questions when asked. She is a tough grader - it was rare for anyone is my class to get over a B on papers, but if you really put forth the effort and proof read, you should do fine. While many theories we study are outdated, she can still make the class interesting
I admire the fact that she is passionate about the subject, but her grading is unnecessarily harsh, even for an SWS class. Anyone that calls themselves an excellent writer may be in for a rude awakening, as I am pretty sure that no one in the class received an A on either of the assigned papers.
Actually a really interesting class. She is not a bad prof either. She doesn't lecture very long and shows a lot of film clip, allowing discussion afterwards. 2 short papers were required which were pretty easy. Good gen. ed. class!
Toni is a tough grader and she goes on and on about how everyone will get A's on their papers... don't know why she says this, its not true. Her ppts get dull and boring but she's entertaining when when lectures and its easy to make her laugh. She also tends to favor guys.
Perrine is a great example of the saying "Those who can't do, Teach." She teaches all kinds of film classes but has she ever made a film her self? She is a very tough grader and to make matters worse she loves to here her self talk. If you can help it DONT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER.
I guess the best thing I can say is that she grades harshly, she's strict, the films you watch are mostly boring. You read and write a lot. Computers and other electronics aren't allowed in her classes. It's not a fun experience in her class and you'll be hating it after a week.
Take her! This was such an interesting class. Toni knows her stuff and knows how to teach it. I actually learned a lot and did not miss a single class.
I'm done with Perrine. Shes very knowledgeable but that's it. Her grading scale is impossible to work with, she's super strict, she has humiliated me not once but twice in class. Computers and other electronics aren't allowed in her classes. It's not a fun experience in her class and you'll be hating it after a week. Proceed with caution.
Perrine is a great professor, very knowledgeable and open minded. It's sad that a lot of students don't appreciate her enough. She expects you to put in the effort and doesn't underestimate you. So don't take her if you're a slacker.
Tough Grader, but she understands the material very well, couldn't make it any clearer. Be prepared to write concise papers
As a film student, I loved taking Perrine's class. Her lectures are engaging and clear. Yes she is a tough grader but she is very fair and her expectations are clear. Some people are offended by her honest attitude, but those people just are used to the other professors at Grand Valley that aren't nearly as challenging as Perrine
She is by far the worst professor I have had. Boring lectures, not the nicest person, and she expects everyone to be an expert in film even though the class is a gen ed. DO NOT TAKE.
Her lectures are long and boring, only have to write two papers but involve multiple aspects, and don't except to get good grades on those papers. If possible avoid at all costs.
Worst professor i have ever had! It is impossible to get a decent grade in her class and I have gone to every single one of them. She's rude, is impossible to please when it comes to papers, and expects you to be an expert on film. AVOID
The only PhD in a department that desperately needs more. The only faculty member capable of teaching Film Theory and World Cinema. Her classes are rigorous but incredibly important in providing a foundation for seriously thinking about cinema. Prepare to read, write, watch, and work and you'll do quite well. All others need not apply.
Toni is extremely knowledgeable, but one of the most difficult professors I've had in my four years at GVSU. She grades papers as if she's teaching a class full of writing and English majors. She requires a 2,000 word research paper, four 500 word papers, and the midterm is a 1,500 paper, and the final is some sort of medieval torture mechanism.
Perrine is not a bad person to talk to outside of class, but definitely not professor material. She has a very clear mindset on what she's looking for in a paper, but if it is not absolutely up to par with her standards, you will fail. I recommend seeking help outside of class, and staying on her good side. She also flies through notes, so beware.
I had her for a 100 level class and she shouldn't be teaching lower level classes. She is the only PhD in the department and expects a lot of her students. She's not ideal for lower classes, but it's manageable. One thing that irritated me is that she would not let us use the bathroom during class (despite it being at 9am after many had coffee).
She can be tough, but she's not unmanageable. She wants everyone to pass and she will work with you to boost up your grade with extra credit. She doesn't want you to leave in the middle of class but that's understandable because it's an auditorium and leaving is distracting. Get ready for two big papers, a group project and a lot of reading.
Very frustrating to have as a Professor. Not a clear communicator at all. The readings and lectures are occasionally interesting but usually are just tedious and leave you feeling dead inside. Get ready to dedicating precious hours of your life writing long papers about applying vaguely defined political ideologies to a modern day film.
She is a very hard grader because she doesn't explain what exactly she wants for assignments and makes up how she grades after you turn it in, which is completely unfair. She does give extra credit, but you have to be willing to work really hard for an A.
Most of the grades come from short essay responses to the 30-50 pg. weekly readings (not bad, the reading was useful) and she offers lots of E.C. She's very open in office hours and will explain exactly what she is looking for, it's the same with the 2 big papers you write. Just be respectful and communicate with her, she is a great professor.
Toni is one of the hardest professors I have ever had at GVSU. She is not very accommodating to students (doesn't post grades on BB) and she is a really tough grader. Her classes are required, but do NOT take two on the same day as I did, huge mistake. Get ready for reading and group presentations. If she likes you the class will be way easier.
Toni was a wonderful Professor. At first this class seemed like an endless amount of work, but I soon realized she just wants you to live up to your potential. Not just do the bare minimum. She made me get excited about learning again! Take her if you actually want to further your education!!
Toni makes you work hard, but I think she is a great professor. She really wants her students to learn. Yeah, the big papers are tough, but she is great to work with during office hours to make sure you understand the material. Definitely try and get on her good side during the first few days.
I love Toni so I am a bit bias. The class is reading heavy but worth the information as it is very interesting. Theories can be hard to understand but she does a good job of explaining them in more modern terms. Papers can be long and difficult to write, but she's always willing to help.
The class is interesting because the films she shows are really cool. Can be a bit lecture heavy at times but the lectures always relate well to what she screens. SHOW UP TO CLASS. Also, do any extra credit you can in the beginning because it can be hard to keep up towards the end of the semester.
