I don?t understand how some haters are complaining about that Prof.J makes you talk about current events instead of giving boring lectures on terms you?ll never remember when class is over- I thought that was supposed to be a good thing. It is also great when he tells you what is going to be on the test, so you can save time studying.
I will start by saying he's a treat to look at!!! Besides that he's cool, he's not a traditional boring teacher. He wants to make you think outside of the box and i appreciate that. Highly recommend!
DON'T take him! I read the reviews for this teacher thinking he was going to be good, but I didn't learn anything in his class. He has no class structure and he isn't clear about the essays. I tried to ask about the midterm beforehand because I wanted to start studying for it. He refused to give any information and said he would only do a
DON'T take him! I read the reviews for this teacher thinking he was going to be good, but I didn't learn anything in his class. He has no class structure and he isn't clear about the essays. I tried to ask about the midterm beforehand but he refused to give info. until the class before the midterm. Take Mrs. B instead!
Johnson is a very great teacher! he is very nice & trys to get everyone involved. he likes when you give your opinion & when you are involved in class discussion. he is funny and nice! The tests & term papers are pretty easy. we watch a lot of movies & its okay if you miss a few days from class too. do the work & you'll do fine!
Johnson knows his stuff. This class is transferable so I didn't mind the relaxed feel of the class. If you won't participate in class, what's the point in even goin to school? He really is a liberal and expresses his views. If you oppose him, speak up, he won't give u a bad grade for an opinion.
His class is really fun! He's generally an easy going teacher as long as you are doing your part as a student. There were only 2 tests, the midterm and the final. He gives EVERYTHING you need to know the class before the test. Basically, if he doesn't tell you to write it down for test notes, then it's not going to be on the test. He's very helpful
I can't believe how many students there are who have anything bad to say about Mr. J!!! This is ridiculous! He is nothing but helpful, thorough, and insightful. For those of you who need someone to make a difference in your life, please take Mr. J's class; he will enlighten you and help you build a greater purpose for yourself. He did for me.
Hands down the best! He loves what he does and it shows. If you can't relate to his class then you need to take a look at yourself.
this is the best class ive ever taken! professor johnson is amazing. he is the most intellectual man ive ever met. he knows what hes talking about and always opens your mind by playing devil's advocate. he makes u think. the absolute best teacher ive ever had. if you have the chance to take any of his classes, please do
This guy is a true human-being, and very passionate about sociology. He's very interesting, helpful and he'll change the way you think about society. I never wanted to miss a day of class. He also loves SPORTS and VIDEO GAMES.
Prof. J was an interesting professor.I had him durring the election and he was overly opinionated. If you don't agree with him, don't speak up becasue even though he asks for opinions, he will usually just argue with your opinion. Not very clear about grading guidelines for the papers, but only two tests in the class. Got a B+.Enjoyed curent events.
I luv this dude, he's the most exciting and intelligent teacher I've ever had. If you're open minded you'll be ok. If not he's not the teacher for you.
i can tell you right now that anyone who isn't a fan of this guy is someone who is used to being the favorite of every other teacher. tonmar does NOT play favorites. he treats everyone with the same level of respect and he is a caring guy. not many teachers like him. his class has me considering a major in sociology. all around fantastic class. :)
a little harder then expected, but well worth it. i got more out of this class then the classes at my UC
He's so cool. He really enjoys what he's doing. You'll get alot out of this class.
AWSONE TEACHER VERY REAL AND MATERIAL USEFUL AND RELATED TO EVERYDAY LIFE.
So freaking hot. haha. his class is good. He knows what he is talking about and knows how to get the class motivated.
he is a good teacher, makes it very clear what you need to write down and study. his tests are easy if you put a little effort into studying. i feel he is biased towards african americans and feels like they are still treated like second class citizens which i totally disagree with. other than that he's great
Took him last Spring semester (8-week course = 2 exams + 1 paper). Great professor! Presents information in a way you can relate to! Participation is a must! I'm normally very timid, but it was easy for me to speak up in this class. Also, he is extremely helpful and understanding. Spend time studying (like any other class) & you'll get an A.
He is caring, interesting and passionate. He opened my eyes to a whole new perspective on life, the government, religion, and how we treat each other. He is really funny and keeps you on your toes at times. He makes a really relaxing environment for you. Seriously Professor Johnson whats with all the reaction papers haha
I love Professor Johnson. He has by far one of my best professor I have taken. I gained so much out of his class. I agree with the comment before about a lot of reaction papers but they are easy. I definitely recommend taking him!!Infact im going to take him again.
Definitely not a dry lecturer type! I loved his question-response-discussion style of conducting class, and I loved the way he brought broad sociological issues of social inequality into perspective. It was probably their first introduction to systemic inequality for a lot of students, and he handled it really well. Also, he's gorgeous! <3
MR. JOHNSON IS FINE!! OH, AND OFCOURSE VERY SMART AND INTERESTING. DID I MENTION HE'S FINE? YUMMY!
he was good
This teacher is a socialist liberal who hates everyone in the military, and doesn't believe terrorist are bad people. he will fail you if you appose him and do not believe in his crap. He is arrogant and should not call himself an American. He is also a hypocrite! Worst teacher ever!!
The last comment is right on! This guy ask for your opinion on matters just to argue with you. I noticed he had some bad comments earlier and then later people said that those people are haters. PLEASE believe me when i tell you that they are NOT haters. Do yourself a favor and stay away from him. He is nothing more than an cocky jack@$$!!!
This teacher should not be teaching anywhere. Seems to be for communism. Expresses his beliefs as if they're the best and real opinions that should matter. He really does ask questions to students to argue his point and oy his point. Biggest contradictorist I have ever encountered in solano. If you can't make up your own opinions on things take him
Don't take this instructor. He does not deserve the name professor. He is the biggest hipocrite, nonsensical bigot I've ever encountered. He says don't judge me yet he judges everyone who doesn't share his own opinion. He sucks in teaching. Whenever personal opinion matters in the real world of acedemia then he will be someone of importance then.
Coming from a white male, that student is hilarious. So off it's sad. He's a wonderful instructor and I am going to tell the rest of my friends to take him. Go Professor J
Just finished my final and it was a wonderful experience. He is an excellent teacher once you get to know him.
Prof. Johnson was really a cool and understanding professor as our class progressed through the semester. His discussions will help you understand the concepts of socio really well. Just study your best and speak up during lectures/discussions cause he likes someone like himself--someone very agreeable and understanding.(=
By far one of the worst teachers at Solano.
One of the hardest classes i have ever had to sit through because the professor is so one minded and is not open to anyone else's opinions he doesn't have any facts to back up his absurd logic. he continuously contradicts himself, and works to persuade you to believe his beliefs. i would NOT recommend him.
10/10 Johnson is an excellent teacher. He IS highly opinionated, but he backs up his reasoning and is allowed to speak his mind just as the students are. He's a logical, intelligent human being with plenty of educational and life experience (perhaps more important). Currents Events and a comfortable atmosphere make this class unlike any other!
actually a cool class, learned more then i thought i would. going to take him again and i might become a sociology major
Tonmar is extremely intelligent and compassionate, very good at making you think, and backs up his opinions with solid logic. If you're willing to open to that and to act like an adult (because yes, he treats his students like adults and expects them to act accordingly), you'll have no problem. If you're not, you'd do better to not sign up for him.
Dude is cool as hell. Knows his stuff and makes class interesting. He's a must take.
Retaking Prof J and its worth it. He's on top of his stuff. He will inspire you to be your best. Thanks Prof J :)
Kinda full of it. Talks like he knows a lot but really can't back it up. Overall, if he sticks to the material you learn a lot, but when he talks about life or things going on in the world he just sounds like he has no idea what he is talking about, but acts like he does. It's amusing, really.
A1, the best there is!
An alright teacher. Pretty clear on how sociology is but, very hypocritical. He always says to people who disagree to "Use your sociological imagination." but if someone says something different he goes and says "well I don't really agree because I know a few people..." Loves to embarrass people in front of class. Take if only you can deal with it.
Tonmar Johnson is a young man with an attitude. The first day of class he gave the impression that he expects the worst of the class. He mentioned that he attended SCC when he was young and that he basically knew what kind of slackers (we are among other things). I?m not going to report him because he told us that he has a tenure?which means he can
he's is hard but if you show up to class everything makes sens. He cares about his students alot.
Thank god I took this class in summer - Anything more then 8 weeks with him & I would have killed myself. Condesending, hypocrite, plays favorites, & unprofessional. Talks about his "baby mama" etc. Best way to pass, agree w/ him on everything, lay low & hope you're not a soc major b/c you won't learn much.
Great teacher ! just stay on top of your note and you will pass!!
Cool guy but chronically late and expects for his students to be on time. The class is easy. Take notes, do all reaction papers & term papers. He'll give the class what to expect on mid term & final, so there is no reason to fail. Take advantage of the extra credit, it helps at the end. Keep an open mind on the topics covered.
Awesome teacher! Not too sure about the previous ratings because although I found him very opinionated he's open and RESPECTFUL to other's opinions. He is obviously passionate about what he does and cares about his student's success. Take him if you want to learn about the subject as well as how to be an open minded individual.
Really passionate and caring enjoys teaching and cares about the students. one of the best teacher i have ever took. MADE ME A BETTER PERSON!!!!! I would take his class even if it wasn't requied for my degree
Cool guy...passionate but makes lecture interesting
Great Teacher! You really learn a lot from him! I enjoyed his SOC1 class so much that I took his SOC22 class. Take great notes & you'll do fine! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking Prof. J! Attendance also is mandatory! Need to buy book also!
His class is very very strict, he doesn't accept late work, his grading system is right off the textbook, has to have exact wording. However, he teaches you to be very social person, which is very important to apply to every day life. Even though I got a D, I still enjoyed his lectures!
He'll expect you to know the key components in the chapters and participate in discussion. Tries to challenge the way you think, but comes off as condescending and negative about religion. You need to attend class and take lecture notes - study those and you can get an A. Two papers, mostly take notes/participate to do well.
Took Mr. Johnson's class during the summer at Brandman University and I can say that his class was definitely different than most. Great conversation among my peers, made you think outside the box a lot, and I'd take any of his classes if given the chance. He's the finest teacher I've ever had hands down but a great teacher overall. :)
He's a teacher that you are constantly questioning his professionalism as well as where he gets the credits for what he has to say. In almost every class he has to mention how Blacks are/were mistreated. Plays favorites. No slides or guidelines to help with tests/ research paper. Hypocritical. Likes to talk about himself.
Definitely a good teacher. He's passionate about teaching this class and he lays out all of the rules and lessons clear. The material was interesting and everything was straight forward. I definitely recommend taking him! He has a few one page papers, a mid term, term paper and a final.
Really full of himself, and likes to talk about sports teams he only likes. Make class present lectures so he's really not teaching, and when he does teach he goes off topic a lot!
He is a very inspirational man. He gives plenty of hints as to what to expect on the exam and makes you work for your grade. Gives plenty of extra credit opportunities to improve your grade. Definitely wants you to succeed. Highly recommended.
Absolutely wonderful teacher, very clear with his expectations. Will make you leave class if you come in late. Tests are very easy if you study for them. Very clear about what is going to be on the tests. I would recommend.
If you attend class, take notes and study you will pass this class. The majority of class is spent discussing current events. He is far more bias than he claims and can be a bit contradictory. However, over all it was a very interesting class.
Dude can be cool at times but can also put you on blast. I have learned a lot in the class and I'm thinking about changing my major to sociology.
Great teacher open class discussion and gives you at will be on the test, must participate and have book but the best class I've ever taken!!not to mention cute..
Unprofessional. Arrogant. Biased. If you are a soc major, you won't be fully prepared to transfer and compete with other soc majors.
Do not recommend. He seems very passionate about sociology, but he will drift off topic a lot. He does not do much teaching, I attended every class session which was 50 minutes. The first 30 minutes of each class was spent talking about sports.. He makes you take the mid-term and final based on a rap song you have to analyze/interpret.
Why are this guys reviews so good? He is the worst teacher ever. He failed half the class because his midterm was 15 questions and 2 essay questions, but he was too lazy to grade the essays so he gave grades based off of how much he liked you/if you gave your opinion in class. He's ALWAYS late and never teaches, youll be lucky to learn something.
I was actually looking forward to this class until the second lecture. This guy is very arrogant, and he doesn't do much teaching. All he does is force his views onto others by appealing to others' emotions. I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy.
I do not recommend this teacher. He wastes too much time talking about "current events" (sports, unrelated topics) and practically makes the students teach the class. He is late everyday, but won't let you stay for the class you PAID for if you arrive when he does. He is argumentative and his opinions often contradict the idea of the lesson.
Don't recommend him. Not very nice and spends too much time talking about himself and HIS views. Very inconsistent and rude I would suggest another soc teacher .
Liked him as a person, just not as a professor. He knows his stuff but he seems to fall off subject A LOT during lecture. The only thing that kept me attending was his appearance... HAHAHA.
I had some personal issues this year and he helped me through them. Good person & good professor but does like to talk about sports.
Professor Johnson forever changed my life! He puts alot of passion into his teaching and it shows. I was put into a wheel chair during the semester and he worked with me to make sure I could turn in the work and take tests. I'm changing my major to SOCIOLOGY
Some of the raters on here are haters. the first day of class he said that he doesn't allow students to be late so he'll come to class a few minutes late so that it gives everyone a chsance to make it to class. you all need to take responsibility for your grade and do what needs to be done in order to be successful. Great teacher! Highly recommend
Do not recommend if you actually want to learn about sociology. He's a really cool person, just not a good professor. Most of the time, an hour and 15 minute lecture would consist of 40 minutes of talking about current events, sports, or him talking about being pulled over because he's black and drives a hybrid. Also, he would arrive 5 minutes late
at our graduation a student spoke about Mr. Johnson and it really touched my heart!!! keep doing what you do professor -you are changing lives. god bless you
As Educated as Professor Johnson appears to be, he is a bigot! He is very judgmental when a class member states their opinion. At the end of the semester, about 12 students remained in the class. I do not recommend this class if you do not enjoy kissing rump.
Professor Johnson is a very passionate, caring and opinionated person, and his teaching style is far from traditional. His lectures are captivating, his tests are fair, and he spells out exactly what to study. He also gives multiple extra credit opportunities. Be open-minded and receptive to opinions other than your own, and you'll learn a lot!
He is very opinionated, your best bet is to just agree with him. You have to attend every class but most times he doesn't take attendance. He gives very long examples, and he doesn't really go over the material. JUST a tip, he cares a lot about the three perspectives, he will literally only test you on those.
Class is very difficult when it comes to what you need to know. He is very vague and if you mess up on one of the three assignments you don't really have a lot of options to make it up. DO NOT MISS CLASS!!! YOU WILL FAIL. He is a great guy that I would go to a seminar to hear his views, but I would not take another intro class from him again.
A lot of people are saying that he'll fail if you don't agree with him. That's not true. He wants to have a debate he enjoys being in an argument. Because then students are critically thinking instead of just believing everything he says. If you like to debate then TAKE HIM. If not then don't start a conversation that you don't want to finish.
He likes to talk about his life so he is always off topic. He'll want you to follow him on FB for extra credit.I t works if you have no life and if you are a Facebook addict. On the start of the class he will ask you for current events. If you need this class as a pre req for non sociology major, dont take this class. He expects too much
Mr. Johnson is super beyond passionate about sociology and he is very interested in hearing other people's perspectives and opinion, but make sure you have an argument to back it up. This class was run off student presentations and Mr. Johnson would teach on some of the highlighted points. A plus is that he tells you what you need to know for midterms and the final. Also, joinging the Soc Club and participating is an easy way to earn lots of extra credit.
Professor Johnson has a passion for what he teaches. He can come off as unapproachable, but he really just wants to build strong students. His lectures are interesting and interactive. Participation is a big deal in his class, so be prepared to talk if you want a good grade. The midterm was harder than expected, but the final was easy!
extremely smart, but prefers to spend first 15 minutes of class talking about sports. As long as you're in class before him, you're allowed in, however he will kick you out (even during the final) if you're late. You'll need the book & you'll need to study it. Gives stupid questions like "how many benefits are there to education?" on exams.
Professor Johnson was a great instructor! Be prepared to read and take notes from his lectures. This class will make you understand social issues and how society works, get ready to learn from a great teacher! :)
He talks way too much about himself and then expects a lot for you. Although when he does bother talking about something relevant to the class, he does a good job at it. He needs to quit gloating and do his job right.
He doesn't take any crap from his students. Don't show up late because he will tell you to go home. But he genuinely cares about his students and helps them but also pushes them to open up their mind and expand their outlook on things,
Didn't really enjoy the class. Majority of the time it's your opinion vs. his, and his always prevails in the end due to his massive ego. The content of the class isn't backed by anything solid, and consists of stories about Tonmar's life. Basically just agree with everything he says and you'll be just fine.
I took Professor Johnson for two classes in one semester. He talks a lot about himself so be prepared to spend the beginning of class listening to stories. GET THE BOOKS. He will ask vague questions like how many ways do sports contribute to the economy, so take notes on everything he says during lecture. He also offers extra credit.
Prof. Johnson is a great professor. Attendance is mandatory, he remembers his students & wants them to be there to learn. He does have strong opinions but encourages students to have strong opinions as well. He really wants his students to open their eyes & see things for as it is & why it is what it is. Put in the work, PARTICIPATE & youll be fine
. Tests are easy if you study. He tells you exactly what will be on the two tests he gives so there is no reason to do poorly. He is a good teacher but I believe people who cannot think outside the box can appreciate and understand what he is teaching which left a lot of students complaining. There are only a few assignments and one research paper.
Online class was really tough. It was broken down into 6 weeks for summer, I feel this class shouldn't be offered for summer school because you really dont get the full learning experience when you have to cram so much.
Don't take the online class. Terrible at using canvas and you're the one who suffers for it. Doesn't get grades in on time. Assignments aren't hard when you can understand what he wants but just try figuring out when it's due.
It was his first online class, and some found it confusing. But, it was my first semester and I got a high B. There were some hiccups, but I was able to keep up. Found the class interesting and his assignments were full of really intriguing information.
Huge disappointment. High hopes after first class because he was so energetic, articulate and provocative. Lectures? What lectures - most of the class was students presenting Powerpoints. Tardiness? He was very clear about it pertaining to us but apparently not for him. Highly opinionated which is ok but current events (Ferguson) dictated content.
Made it clear from day 1 that his class is not one to brush off lightly. Gives many extra credit opportunities. Gives you all information that will be on the mid-term and final. Come to the lectures with a open mind or you will not enjoy them. Claims to not care about his students but i think secretly he does. Overall i found it a good experience.
He doesn't appear to know his way around the Canvas online system. Has posted discussions that aren't supposed to be assigned for a few more months from now. His assignments are very vague, with no clear instruction as to what he expects from the student. Very slow at responding to inquiries or concerns regarding his vague assignments.
Taking his class online, directions are very vague, making assignments very difficult. He says you can only e-mail him as a last resort, you have to ask someone else first or post it in the chat, the only problem with that is no one else can understand the directions either.
I took his intro class, Tonmar is a very great guy. Hes very opinionated and thats okay, His lectures get extremely off topic and 80% of class time is talking about current events. People rate him as a hard professor and he is, hes no pushover jc professor, tries to prepare you for real world. Cares very much about his students Also, don't be late
I took professor J's online intro Soc class and it was the worst online class I've taken so far (all my classes are online). The parameters for homework were very unclear, there wasn't enough detail and guidelines, it was confusing and frustrating. He didn't give the best feedback and was difficult to get a hold of. Not his strong suit.
Took his online class and he takes forever to respond to emails. Also not extremely clear on what he wants from your assignments and will dock you if you don't get it exactly right.
I went into this class with an open mind and left very satisfied with all the insight and knowledge I was able to get from Johnson's class. There were some times when he would say crazy, radical things, but for the most part, I agreed with him. Do the extra credit he gives!! I didn't and as a result, I fell short of an A. Ended up with a B.
Hands down one of the worst professors I've ever had. He doesn't do power point notes and thinks have "discussion's" as lectures are good enough. You have to have the book to pass. Good luck to anyone that has to take him, you'll need it.
Very easy class online, just do the weekly assignments and you'll be A-okay. Like literally just write two paragraphs on a given subject and watch a video and bam you're done for the week. The book and topics are actually really interesting and relate a lot to the real world, in case you're interested in actually learning.
I heard awful things from other students about Johnson, but I loved him! He tries to scare you form the very beginning but all you have to do is show up and take notes. Textbook reading is not needed.
VERY UNHELPFUL! Doesn't care about getting back to you onetime, leaves assignments open after they are due but doesn't give you late credit. Makes mistakes on his canvas about due date for assignments, all the assignments were due at 11:59 P.M. & when I called him out about one assignment that said 7:59P.M. he didn't care to fix it. Don't take him!
So unclear with what he wanted for his assignments. He'd pretty much have us watch a YouTube video and respond with what we thought of it. Often it was some obscure video which was unrelated to what we were reading in the textbook. Awful feedback on assignments too. He wouldn't even use complete sentences and I'd be left wondering what he meant.
Great Professor, didn't really explain what he expected in his research papers, but once you talked to him one on one it was an easier understanding he is a really easy person to talk with. Wasn't really expecting to learn much from this class but I was wrong enjoyed it and left with a lot of new knowledge !
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Seems irritated whenever a student emails him. Also is very unclear about his assignments and what he expects from them. Then if you don't do it correctly, he docks you A LOT! What kind of professor doesn't care about his students or their grades? Not understanding at all. Trust me, do not take his class.
Wouldn't recommend this course. Requires a lot of student participation, only for it to be worth 15% of total grade. Also difficult to get a hold of. Assignments are vague with little to zero feedback. Not sure if he's lazy or doesn't care about students. Probably both.
Boring, and doesn't cover stuff from the book mostly political topic. Don't know how he became a professor, he doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time.
Skip class he won't know if you've showed up, he doesn't know peoples name, and never takes roll calls. Never talks about what's in the book. Can be annoying.
avoid taking this class, worst class I have ever taken. It's a waste of your time. You don't and will not learn anything.
He was cool at first, but afterwards he just became harder and harder to deal with. I don't understand the whole thing he does it bugs me, does not give feed back on papers, and likes to go on about different stuff in class that takes up the whole class time and we don't even get to the lesson
He gives vague assignments and is very strict on grading. He uses a low point system so if you do poorly on a few assignments then you'll have a D or even an F. Would not recommend. Avoid taking him at all costs.
Only reason why he still has his job is because he drops those who have Ds or Fs so that he can still have his job! Over half of his students fails on written essay midterm, if students won't drop he will drop the students so he can still have his job. You only get two Exams and no popularizes or take home assignments. This class is a gamble.
This Teacher Johnson is a bigot! He is judgmental when a class member states their opinion. End of semester only 12 students remained in the class. Worst teacher in the world! He failed half the class because his midterm was 20 questions and 2 essay questions, he is too lazy to grade the essays so he gave grades based off of how much he likes you.
Only two Exams (Midterm and Final) no quizzes or take home assignments. You basically waste your semester learning nothing, but how bigoted Tonmar is. He's never at the office, if you do catch him in the office he will tell you that he's very busy, but If you are a woman or his favorite and walks by a minute later he's not busy.
After taking SOC1 with Prof J, I decided to continue with SOC as a major. He's a very interesting man, and he gives you a lot of different perspectives on the situation. He tells his opinion but he does not hold it against you if you disagree. Reaction papers are easy (your opinion), take good notes on the video. Make sure you STUDY for the tests!
Do not take this class with this "teacher"! If your opinion is different than his, on your opinion based paper, he will dock you major points! He is extremely unclear in what he wants on ALL work, and then he leaves feed back that simply states "perspective". I mean, really? Avoid this teacher! Too bad, because the class could have been a good one
For an oppinated class your opinion better match johnsons or you won't do well. He's right you're wrong in anything you discuss. Avoid at all costs. I repeat avoid at all costs
Pros: Great subject material, nice discussion and reaction paper topic, provides extra credit Cons: Sometimes he does not get back to your questions in a timely manner and does not provide clear feedback on your reaction papers. Also, he does not tell you why you did not get full points on discussion posts either. Not very familiar with Canvas.
Professor Johnson was a great professor. Participation was heavy, so be ready to be involved on the daily. Extra Credit is mostly on his FB page so have a FB in order to have access to those opportunities. All in all, he was on top of the class as I expected, gave great feedback when asked via email, and seems to care a lot about his students.
Do not take this class. He says to write how you feel and then grades you poorly if it's not what he thinks. Also he's not clear about anything and will not tell you what you're doing wrong. He does offer extra credit which is cool but they're mostly things you have to attend and that's hard to do when you have a super busy schedule. Don't take!!
The class itself isn't too bad as long as you stay on top of your work, the hard part is that the teacher doesn't offer much feedback as to why you miss points. And if you ask for further explanations on your grade be prepared for a rude answer. If I wanted to literally teach myself I would have just bought the book.
lol those previous students were haters. Prof Johnson is the best instructor I've taken. I graduated from UC Davis last year and decided to return to try and get into the nursing program ended up taking the best course I've ever had.
I was unsure if I should leave a rating, but after reading some of them I had to tell the truth. He is a very tough grader but he's repeatedly said that if you can pass his class you can pass any class that you will ever take. I saw students who came to class unprepared and then when they got their exam back complained. Take accountability for you!
Really enjoyed his class. He won't let you be late for class.
He is a real college professor and if you want to learn take him.
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PROFESSOR!! Not only did I learn so much about soc, but he motivated me to change my way of thinking. He considers himself to be a humanitarian. He respects ALL people regardless of their background & he teaches his students to do the same. He keeps it so real. His course for me was life changing. TAKE HIM!!!
Took online. Required to participate in weekly discussions with responses to 2 peers. Reaction papers about every other week. Quizzes about 5 questions per 2 chapters. Book not necessary, but useful for 5 question quizzes. One mid term paper. final straight from questions from past quizzes. extra credit power point. pretty easy.
I took this class knowledgeable about past students' experiences with him and I should have listened. His grading criteria isn't clear, even if you put your effort into the work and reach his requirements for an assignment it won't meet his standards. I definitely wouldn't recommend him to anyone
ATTENTION. If you're looking to get an A in this class, then you better work for it! For those who said that this class is easy, they're probably those students who study the night before a test and still get an A. I am a biology major and I have straight A's and this class might be my first B! The teacher doesn't even peer review your work...
Professor Johnson is a ridiculously tough grader and seems to contradict himself with his grading. Turning in a paper even an hour late is a 0, doesn't matter what it is. He had us discuss a FouseyTube video and the video was laughably fake. He says he doesn't care about the format for your essays, but he does - I was marked down significantly.
If you want a guy that is going to tell his students that he really doesn't care if you show up or not, and then to change test dates and send no message to his students that he changed it, take this guy. He says he chooses to teach at Solano and not a 4 year, but I say the 4 year can take this pathetic excuse for a teacher. You WILL regret taking.
The only thing I enjoyed about this class was what i learned from the assignments. He definitely picks some interesting topics but then expects you to be an expert on everything. When I received a bad grade and asked for feedback and help he would not reply to me. Sometimes it seemed like he graded me poorly because I had different views then him.
He is a very tough grader like everyone says. Discussions you better put a LOT of effort in. Papers are easy if you make them long enough. Tests are easy if you read the book. There is extra credit at the end of the semester. But really, he isn't that bad if you do the work he asks for and you're not lazy.
This professor is absolutely amazing. I learned more in the last 8 weeks about life, race, stratification and wealth than I ever thought I knew. If someone doesn't get a good grade it;s because they didn't try. More than fair, but is a tuff grader.
Professor Johnson overall is a good professor. You know the saying that effort is reflected in the outcome, this is the literal depiction of that saying. You have to work HARD. There are a lot of reaction paper, make sure you make them long. The quizzes are easy if you read the book. Theres extra credit at the end which is pretty easy.
I just finished the summer class and it was the best class I had since deciding to go to college. He challenged every thing I was thought I knew. I will be taking more classes of his.
People... Look at the thumbs up to thumbs down ratio. If sociology was not a required class, Johnson would have no class to teach. He doesn't care if you show to class, but he shows up to class 5 minutes late every class. I have an AA in general science from Solano, and Johnson was my only Withdraw from a class. Don't put yourself through this.
I enrolled this class with passion but this prof pulled me off. He takes away so many marks for a minor mistake and your score drops drastically. His response when you ask him something is short and not helping at all otherwise he will not answer at all. He is the worst prof so far since I started college.
Dont bother to take his class.
Dude is strict and set on his schedule about when he wants things turned in. Zero tolerance for late work. You can't work ahead in this class like most online classes.
Prof J is a hard grader!! but he is an amazing teacher. participate in class discussions and turn in your work and you will be FINE in this class!!!!
He's an amazing teacher and I'm taking him again this semester.
Took him for my online and it was tough but well worth it. He made me think outside of my comfort zone and it was the first time I looked at how I could help those less fortunate. There was a lot of extra credit opportunities and it helped my grade.
Last semester I was going through a ruff patch in my life and this man helped me not only get through it but except that my future is in my hands. I've seen nothing but compassion and empathy from him with my class. I don't see how any wanting a true education doesn't see his heart. The only must take I've rated in my 3 semesters at solano cc
I too him last semester Professor Tomar is an Awsome! teacher he gives you the EXACT tools needed to pass his class that its impossible to fail unless your not trying. There are no tricks when it comes to test or homework He gives you clear lectures. His class is hard/easy because theres no tricks. Just do the work Also LGBTQIA friendly
Prof Johnson is unclear on his assignments, his expectations and his grading. He offers no clear way to succeed in his class, and it seems as though he enjoys giving bad grades. When I asked him for help, he replied "Most of my students have an A, it must not be to hard for them, huh?" He doesn't care about his students or their education.
I spent a couple of years at Solano Community College, and this is the worst teacher I have ever had. He ostracizes certain students, and does not care to do so. I feel like I am a caring person, but this person is not fit for SCC.
Great professor! Handsome and well educated. He is also inspiring, he knows a lot about life too not just in school but the real world.
If you are trying to get into Sacramento City College, for their Nursing program. They are not accepting Introduction To Sociology anymore. FYI.
I just finished his 8 week class and when I tell you that it was the best class I've ever taken! I've been to the 4 year university and as a Professor he is a hybrid between those that make you go above and beyond and those that care for each student independently. If you want a real college class at SCC I recommend him for sure and I'm in nursing.
He was a very smart man but I think it got to his head and came off very standoffish. I took an online class and I was constantly thinking about what smart remark I'd get. Can't turn anything in late, found this out when I did submit something late and he sent a comment saying "LATE." Obviously.
Very unclear in his instructions. When asking him questions, he will not answer and says, "ask others". Grades very tough even though he makes mistakes himself often. He seems to be very conceited and is hard to talk to. Do not recommend at all.
Read, show up to class, and participate. It is really that simple. It's Sociology so we have a lot of tough discussions about controversial issues. If you can't handle the truth, don't take this class.
Great teacher. I learned a lot of material that i will carry with me and pass on to people around me. I learned stuff about myself along the way. This class isn't an easy-A but definitely worth the push. Do your reading and join in during class discussions!!
For someone that knew nothing about Sociology coming into the class I'm sure glad I took him. This was the best class of my semester.
he is a great teacher, absolutely loved taking his class
He was a good person and I loved how he was straight forward with any situation however his teaching method isn't really that great (for me). Gets distracted a lot and goes off topic most of the time. Get ready to read lots
Tonmar Johnson did not answer half of my emails. They did not give feedback on any of my essay papers. Did not give much extra credit. Was not help on any essay or papers, I would not recommend this professor.
He wants you to talk to classmates first before emailing him, or he'll ignore you. Picky on essays, but acknowledges if you're working hard on it. I had a 93.9 before final and other quizzes were graded and it went to 89.7 after grading. Emailed him about it since I worked hard on the papers/tests and he said it looks like an A to him.
I just finished my summer online class and it was amazing. I come from a small town and was given views that I wish I had as a child. Thank you professor Johnson
Took online class over the summer and Ive learned a lot. Prof J is a tough grader and makes you work for your grade. Be sure to put a lot of effort in your papers. He says minimum 2pages but I had to do 3-4 just to get full credit because hes all about EFFORT. Doesnt give feedback also. He gives extra credit and that helped boost my grade.
If you are not proactive you will not pass. His lectures are interesting but he is very closed minded for a sociology professor and instead of explaining and trying to understand how people feel about a topic he gets very emotional and rambles on. The parts that he did teach were ok. Rarely will give you the time of day even for questions.
Johnson is very close minded, he could care less about whether or not you pass. He seemed like he'd be a cool professor at first, but he sucks. He'll assign a paper and give a grading rubric, but will grade you to higher standards and you'l end up extremely confused as to why you're failing. Prepare yourself. I'd take another teacher if possible
Tough, but fair.
Got my exam back and it turned out like he said. Put in extra time and got my A. Thanks for caring prof j
Tough grader , little help outside of class. For a stepping stone class the difficulty is set unreasonably high. Choose a different professor.
Very closed minded and rude. Don't expect to get any helpful feed back. He gives the assignments & if you don't do well on it, he uses sarcasm and doesn't give you any ideas on how to become a better student. Worse teacher I have had. I love this subject and don't regret taking it, I just wish I would have came on here to see these comments on him.
i love Professor J, but his class is only graded by a few things which sucks. he always has extra credit available. what he says is on th test is what going to be on the test. as long as you follow along it would be an easy B
Professor J is a very difficult teacher to please. He will ensure that you feel stupid if you complete an assignment wrong, and he does this with extreme amount of sarcasm. He shows no care towards his students.
Just took my final early and he is an amazing man. I am a DSP student and he has been extremely helpful. He did an item drive for the fire vicitims in Cali a few weeks ago and he makes you understand that sociology is everywhere. Must take !
The most unnecessarily difficult teacher. He is not clear about material, nor is he willing to help you if you are confused. Very poor teaching technique. Very strict with every single assignment. Does not reply to emails. Incapable of answering a single question without sarcasm. Would N3V3R recommend to any student.
PROS: - Interesting material and topics CONS: - Very negative - Very, VERY poor communication / interpersonal skills - If you care to pass, lose your own opinions and pick up his. Fake it til you make it. - At the end of our course he made us take a test that tells us if we are subconsciously racist or not and turn it in. Super inappropriate.
I did not have a good time in this course, tough grader and overall not helpful not a very understanding professor very tough grader and there is not many assignments that are worths substantial amount of points.
Part of a teacher's job is to set you up to succeed -- he doesn't do that. 90% of passing this class is trying to make him happy, which isn't possible when he is extremely unclear about what he wants. If he gives an assignment to write 250 words, and you write 250 words, guess what? You just got a C, because you didn't go "above and beyond"
This class is divided up by three main types of assignments that never change. The only problem is, there's so many and they aren't worth that much to your grade. He grades super tough, taking major points for mistakes. Most of the time it seems as if he's looking for your opinion to match his. His final was easy, but I wouldn't recommend him.
You can't ask him a question. He has this bogus "three before me rule" meaning you have to ask three classmates before you can ask him. Sounds reasonable right? Except for the fact that this is an ONLINE class. Using his little "chat" was ridiculous. His quizzes are timed, 5 questions, 12 mins, but short answer at the end caused a lot of anxiety.
Prof. J is honestly not that bad. You do need to read the textbook. Participation during class is quintessential for a good impression. No slides, just class discussions (Like Socratic seminars). Be ready to defend your answers when you contribute. The "sarcasm" in reviews is for making sure you know what you're defending, it's not THAT bad.
This was the class that made me become a soc major!
I took nice online class and I guess it was okay. His work isn't that heavy, but doesn't give any feedback or comment on your work. It seems like he does quantity over quality too as I follow all the directions on the assignment and gives me a C. On the bright side he does have extra credit. But I wouldn't take his class ever again.
Impossible to please. Expects the world for 5 points. The Professor demeanor is ruder then all heck. Before I got a "Hey, welcome to class email". I got a,"I don't accept late work for any REASON!", email. This Prof. grades you on how eloquently you write. Teacher is high and mighty about their time and questions. I would never re-take this Prof.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He does not provide slides or lecture notes. He simply says "read the textbook," then leaves it at that. His rubric basically says "if I like it, I like it." It's incredibly unclear what he wants from you. And he doesn't give any feedback, so you have no idea what to improve on.
Definitely not for everyone. To please him you really have to go above & beyond. To be safe (syllabus is vague and misleading), I wrote a page for each peer review, a page for each discussion response, and about 4+ pages for each reaction paper. The book was pretty much my teacher because he doesn't lecture or talk about the material himself.
this teacher thinks he is working for a top UC and its a economics or political science class... He grades way too hard and isn't realistic . Ive taken different teachers for Soc 1 and I loved the class. I took the class again and This teacher made me actually CHANGE MY MAJOR. HE IS HORRIBLE
One of the Worst, most lazy teacher at Solano.
This is the best class I've ever taken. I'm changing my major and transferring to UCLA in the fall!
I just got my grade and it was better than I expected. I'm sure my extra credit helped me. Grades fair but does expect alot. Good class tho
OFF hands instructor. Not a lot of involvement and don't dare ask him a question, because he will definitely put you in your place for bothering him and make you feel small while never answering your question. I honor straight forward and even difficult instructors but non student friendly and non involved ones I wonder about.
This professor is amazing. Very inspirational and caring toward students. Also, he didn't try to put a question on the exam that he didn't tell us to study for. He's great, probably the reason I'm going to pursue sociology.
Prof J is a great teacher, hes very funny, helps you see the world for what it is and makes you think different about society. Not much homeowork as long as you read the book and particpate in class. DO NOT SKIP CLASS.
He is a very rude individual and disrespectful. He is bothered by us asking him direct questions because he wasn't clear enough of his expectations. I once asked this doesn't match up with this, and I got whats the point of this question. I didn't go to the student board because they would have had the same question as me also. He has a lesson plan
And a lot of his links are from unreliable sources. He's just lazy in my opinion, I believe he gives more attention to his students in person and is lack luster and lazy for the online questions.
When reading some of the comments I was concerned. But this class was the best I've taken at solano. Definitely recommend.
Professor Johnson is one of the most intelligent people I have met in my life, and also an amazing professor. He makes you work for your grade, but if you just show up to class on time and do your best, youll be fine! Lectures are very inspirational and eye-opening. His class should be mandatory in my opinion! 10/10 professor!
I have taken Prof J for three semesters, if your going to take him I would recommend in class because his lectures are worth hearing. Took him for three different subjects he is an easy grader and you have to read the material.
The dude is great. He cares about the students and helps them where he can. Him as a teacher is rude and condescending. He talks as if he's above you and makes you feel stupid when you ask questions for simple clarification. Book is heavily needed and will give HW if no one has read so read it so you don't get homework and hope others do too.
Prof. Johnson is hands down thee BEST professor at SCC. Tbh, at first he comes off a bit arrogant, myself along with a majority of the class found him quite irritating. Though, throughout the semester you will understand that is a gross misjudgement. Don't mistake his passion for arrogance, he really cares about the topics he teaches. 11/10 rec.
I don't see how anyone can give a horrible comment about a teacher who goes above and beyond for his students and his community! I know why and if you take his class you will see. I guess he has the Barack Obama effect on them.
Amazing Professor. He has beautiful lectures and understands exactly what he is talking about. Read the book and study for the exams and it is an easy class.
This guy is downright irritating. Super egotistical, interrupts andmocks students, disrespects religion and has some unresolved biases. Told us if we showed up late, to not come to class at all.. Then proceeded to be late 2x in a row. 2nd day spent over an hour blabbing about himself and left 0 time for us to get to know each other. Disappointing.
Professor Johnson is, without a doubt, one of the main reasons Im pursuing a career in sociology. With that being said, I can understand how he isnt everyones preferred type of teacher. If you go into his class with an open-mind and, occasionally, take things he says with a grain of salt, you will thrive in his course. Truly knowledgeable.
He is such a thought grader and gives no guidelines to what he expects from his students. At least online, he has unreasonable and unclear expectations. I have taken many so sociology classes at Solano, youd think sociology 1 would be somewhat easy? Not with this professor.
This was definitely my favorite favorite class. Youll pass as long as you participate in class, read your book, and take notes. His lectures were always about topics that i could relate to or put myself in that situation. His personality can be seen as arrogant, but hes just passionate and want everyone to understand and grasp his concepts.
Professor Johnson is now my main mentor. This man is truly a gift to SCC. Of course he makes you work for your grade but the key is you enjoy it along the way. I looked forward to class everyday (I took him 3 different times)!! Easily the best Prof Ive ever had. He is someone you can count on in the long run.
If you have social anxiety like me, this class can be very difficult. He expect full participation from the entire class yet is extremely condescending when you answer wrong and has spent a solid 3min ridiculing students for it. Wants an "old school" class but you have to follow him on Facebook instead of using canvas or sending out a mass email.
If you want to actually learn sociology with the help of a professor, i warn you to look elsewhere. If you want to teach yourself then go ahead. The format of this class is painful. No specific guidelines/ feedback on assignments, he grades as he sees fit. Poor communication. The professor is a nice guy but this class was so frustrating to finish.
I just finished my final and i have to say this class was the most inspiring class i've taken in college. I already have my b.a. and need a few credits for my job. Wish i would have taken this as an undergrad because i'd probably be a sociologists! MUST take
Flipping Terrible! If you want to learn absolutely nothing then here's your chance! So annoying and so egotistical!!! NEVER AGAIN!! HES TERRIBLE. He made me feel dumb and stupid because i didn't know an answer to a question. He's just terrible
This semester I had one teacher show me they cared about me and that was Tonmar. At times when i was without internet and had to go and find somewhere he continued to push me. I wanted to walk away and he wouldn't let me. IDC what anyone says he's the best and makes you feel like you are worth it.
I just saw prof johnson at a rally and he always said in class that what he teaches he does and that is the truth. I haven't seen any of my other teachers active in the community. he is the real deal
This is hands down one of the worst professors I have ever encountered. Assignments were heavily reliant on youtube videos and virus-ridden articles. Textbook aside, most of the material aren't credible sources of information. Professor lacks any sense of professionalism and refuses to set expectations of students and grading process.
I like Professor Johnson, this is my second time having him as a professor and I was definitely looking forward to it. Although Sociology is not my major or a career that I am going into, it helps me in my chosen line of work and real life in general. He is very wise and opens up your eyes about so many things.
I absolutely despised Tonmar Johnson's class. His grading criteria is unclear and he makes us write 1000 word essays for each discussion post and each peer review to get a decent grade. Many sources he required us to use were projects of previous students just clumped together last minute, were obnoxious to read/watch, or just both.
Professor Johnson doesnt seem to make himself available outside of class. He doesnt check his messages much and I have gone to his office hours and he didnt show up. He was late to class every single time and had such a terrible attitude. Seems to get a kick out of mocking students, Super unclear on instructions and has students figure it out.
This was my first time having him as a professor and to be honest, his class wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. For his class, we wrote a lot of papers but that was really the only stressful thing about his class. Other than that, I would totally recommend him.
This teacher provides no feedback on anything I would never take this professor if you have any desire to grow and do better with your work. I get low scores with no feedback as to why and I spend a decent amount of time with every paper I write. I cannot improve when a teacher doesn't teach and provide the simplest thing of providing feedback.
This professor doesn't teach. Instructions for assignments are very unclear and they won't respond if you send them a message. There are very few assignments, so if you get one bad grade it's really hard to recover. I had to struggle to get an A due to not understanding ONE of the assignments. If you want to learn sociology, take someone else.
I have never been so impressed by a class as I have been with this one. Not sure how someone can fail this class. He doesn't require any face to face interaction and gets the grading done with in a week.
Not a fan. Makes me feel like I have to write based off what he wants to hear rather than what I actually feel, b/c hes VERY dismissive of anyone with differing views. Glad the class was online, as Im sure it wouldve been very political and one sided in person. Easy class if you just think the way he wants you to, but do you really want that?
He grades you on the amount you write not how you understand the topic and readings. Instead of giving feedback he just posts past student's writings and says our posts should be something like that. The rubric is extremely unclear and he doesn't elaborate on anything. EVER. He's so distant from the class I feel like I'm just teaching myself.
He's fair but strict. Expect to do more than what he asks for if you want an A. He also doesn't really give any in depth feedback on assignments, and he's not that good at getting back to students. I emailed him a few times about things concerning my grade, and he never responded. Grades fairly though.
He got me to think outside of the box and it was dope. Do ur work and you pass
Prof Johnson gives a ridiculous amount of work for the subject that he's teaching. Not only that but he's a tough grader and he makes himself difficult to reach. When you have questions about your grade he tells you to either refer to your classmates or the syllabus. Lazy grader and only gives 1-3 word responses/feedback. 0/5 would not recommend.
Unreal how many haters are on here. This is the best class I've had in my 3 years at solano. It's crazy how he preaches take responsibility and now I see why. I got a B and didn't even try hard
Most helpful college class I've ever taken. Easy, enjoyable, fun. Gives extra credit chances. Learned alot
This class is preety straightforward. I did the work and he got the grades back to me immediately. Not much feedback but the class is simple.
I could never get in touch with him when I had questions. He also flat out tells you, you can do everything he asks for, in an assignment and you will get a C. The only way to get that A is to do over & beyond (extra work) I will say the topics, you talk about in the class are good! If you want to learn on your own, this is your professor.
There is almost never any feedback when grading work. Very particular and expects above and beyond for a decent grade. Tests are easy as long as you do all the readings but discussions are all graded by how he feels about your work. No clear rubrics for online assignments.
Harsh grader and won't explain grading criteria or communicate outside of class. Didn't post lectures and barely expanded on the textbook material, prompts were too broad. Hard to stay motivated in a class where the professor throws in the towel like this. He expects you to go above and beyond any guidelines he sets to get above a C
I'm glad I took him as a teacher. I will take him again.
Could have got a A but bombed the final. Took this same class with a different professor last semester and got a F. Do the work and your fine.
Good teacher and makes the class fun. I am now a soc major transferring to UC davis.
This is a super easy class. Started yesterday and i was nervous cause of some of the posts. Yall are tripping! The communication is up to par, I got 5 email updates in 2 days and they all explain what is expected. There's even extra credit. if you don't pass this class you should look at why you are in college.
he's cool and makes class fun
Worst Professor ever. I reported him to the dean of the department. I'm not going to explain the whole story but he was extremely rude. I also was a straight a and b student and his class was so awful I had an f. So I withdrew. I would much rather take this with a more professional professor who treats his students with respect. Would not recommend
Halfway done and absolutely love this class. It's the most straightforward class I've had this summer. All assignments are graded within a few days and I got 90-100 on all of them.
Must have strong writing skills for his class. I'm an A student but scraped by with a B, not for lack of effort. No essay feedback so I wasn't able to work on strengthening any papers. I don't recommend if writing is not your strength.
I took this class along with a govt class and I am glad I did. Usually I don't pay atten to the diff topics in class but it was interesting to think about the diff issues in society. The only prblm I had was the format. This was my 1st online asynchronous class & I had a hard time being on top of everything but that's more on my end anyways.
I really enjoyed this class and all the discussion topics. It brought us to be more open to others and allow us space to view our own opinions. I like the reflection paper topics. Every part of this class was great.
He is very clear he wants to see EFFORT EFFORT EFFORT!! In return, you get absolutely NO feedback. There's not even a rubric so if you lose points on a assignment you won't know why. The textbook is a good read, and he incorporates videos as well. He's a quick grader but If you can take this class with another professor I recommend you do so.
This is a fun and educational class. i enjoyed the format and the materials we watched with our readings.
Horirible, I had to drop he his completely a terrible professor. He expects you to write for 10 points like essay writing I would NOT recommend.
Professor Johnson is very clear on his expectations as far as grading goes. Yes, if you do the bare minimum requested you will get a C but if you do more then you earn the A. He is clear about this from the beginning. There are weekly discussions and the textbook is online. Overall a very interesting class. I took the summer course and got an A.
Really simple class. Recommended
lots! and lots! of writing. he gives discussion and papers due on the same night. some of us have a life and work during the week, packed on with the courses. its just too much. would have been so much better if papers weren't due the same night as discussions. plus absolutely NO feed back. don't take him unless you have too. this is for SOC45
Halfway through this class and it's awful, there's no feedback given to try and improve. No study guide or powerpoint, just have to read the chapters (that are so hard to get through) and write papers. He's a tough grader too.
I enjoyed this class. I tried taking a different class of his, and it didn't work out. But this class was interesting and somewhat easy. Doing all your work on time is key. He grades funny. Because doing the bare minimum will only get you a C.
Bad professor. Don't waste your time.
"Effort and Details!" He grades based on how much effort and details you put in your writing. It's his opinion and he gives zero feedback on why he graded how he graded. You will spend the whole semester hating him, but at the end he might surprise you! Overall, I'd take him again because his demand for excellence is what made me learn so much.
I took Professor. Johnson's Cultural & Ethnicity Course at TCU, and he is quite an inspirational person throughout this learning experience. I believe that he can develop a better format or layout to engage with his students where it is more "course-focused". Overall, Professor. Johnson is very straightforward, and a tough one to crack.
This class was simple. I got an A and didn't put much effort. I used the tons of extra credit he gives.
Took this class as a 8 week class and worked at my own pace. As long as you turn in your work you will pass. My cousin took the same class and said the same thing. And as a athlete I appreciated all of the extra credit.
He grades tough and doesn't even give you tips on how to do better. I haven't gotten a 10/10 on any assignment, the highest I've gotten was a 9/10. And he won't tell me what I need to do to get a 10. He does give extra credit, though. But the lack of feedback is what brings my grade down, as I'm unsure how to do better.
He gives the most basic assignments and then grades hard with no feedback?? Like I'm confused here.. he's not the worst so if he's the only option available I'd say take him...
Disorganized. Tells you how lucky you are to have a teacher of his quality at the Community College level when he is really UC level but he is really a mess! What I learned from him was how to deal with difficult people to get what you need, which although a valuable skill, was not what I was supposed to get from his class!
He was not clear at all on his grading criteria, and whenever you would ask him what you could improve on he would say, "read the syllabus". What? I wanted a personal response, not a generalized one. He grades extremely tough and has a certain way he wants the discussions/reaction papers to be written. Extremely picky and not helpful.
His assignments are pretty easy, yet it seems Impossible to get a perfect score. I've never had so much trouble trying to get a perfect score on a paper. His syllabus and modules are not updated for the current semester and some have misleading information. Also, the class was listed as a zero-cost textbook option & he had us purchase a textbook.
Absolutely refuses to communicate with you in anyway. Grade really harshly with an unclear and unorganized format. There's no rubic . If you can take the class with a different professor do it!!
He's rude and does not know how to communicate. He grades way too harshly for someone without a clear Rubic. He offers zero feedback on his grading decisions. Save your time and find a different Professor.
Graded me 60% on a reaction paper and said I did not meet min requirements. His requirements are so vague and simple so I asked for clarification. He didn't, just straight-out ignored my question. This class is easy if the professor knows how to communicate expectations to students, instead of giving low grades w/o explanation or offering help.
This class is generally super easy,he's just a tough grader. He has a clear grading criteria, you really just have to show that you're putting effort, and he'll usually tell you that.Other than that,he's very nice, always open to answer any questions you have. He's well respected, I took this class upon looking at his reviews, but it's not as rly bad
I highly enjoyed the class. Each week there was either a discussion, paper, or quiz. Sometimes two. If you do the reading everything is easy. The provided textbook was interesting so it wasn't too hard to finish it each week. He doesn't provide a rubric but will post examples of full credit work.
Horrible do not take and "Tonmar Johnson" is an Alias.
He gave extra credit to those who attended his book signing, took pictures with him and then allowed him to share the photos for promotional purposes. Kind of morally grey and absolutely self serving. No feedback given even when he gives low grades. Pick someone else, This guy wants to be an author, not a professor.
(Online Class) Wouldn't explain why he gives an average grade, only saying "Must try harder" without giving out rubric or examples. The class is very educational and the curriculum is fair and understanding.
very difficult to get a hold of, would often ignore my comments/emails. also refused to give me credit on an assignment I completed because there was an error on canvas. workload is very minimum and manageable though he emphasizes how much you write over the quality of work. only wouldn't recommend if you are truly interested in sociology.
For a professor who is really strict on "more effort" in assignments and having a strict deadline their the laziest professor I've ever had. The feedback is literally only "try harder and you'll get a better grade" that's it, that's all the feedback I would get. Also the assignments are inconsistent essays will typically not correspond to classwork
Does not give any sense of direction, so grading is confusing. Unfortunately he is the only professor who taught soc001 online at the time, but it looks like there are others now. I would not recommend this professor.
I ended up dropping the course after two weeks because the professor did not respond to any emails I sent to him. He comes across as very lazy, and condescending to students in terms of what needs to be completed. If you are taking a sociology course, I would highly not recommend taking any course with this professor.
The class workload is manageable, but the professor can be tough to reach and lacks clear communication on grading. Using unstuckstudy ai and the free textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
If you are not ready for 18 weeks of personal online clas without any help from the prof, I would strongly warn you not to choose this professor! He will not tell you anything about what you did well or not. Where do you need to improve? there was no communication with students! He is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life, from kind to univ!
I mean he wasn't a bad professor the class was just a lot of work but it was manageable. But he doesn't respond to emails. Just be ready to write a ton
I don't recommend taking him. He doesn't give a rubric for any assignment or explain his reasoning for your grade. Work consists of about 4 papers, discussions each week, and sometimes quizzes. He does offer extra credit on his Facebook page if you're willing to do it. Overall don't take him if you don't like professors who don't like teaching.
I don't recommend this professor at all. He doesn't do his job well! If you don't do well, all he will just tells you that you need to work harder! That's it!!!! You also need to prepare your own 18 weeks of online courses. Because this professor will not give you any information, I 100% do not recommend this professor.
Assignments were disorganized and harshly graded. Doesn't communicate with students or respond to emails. Seemingly condescending and lazy. Extra credit is provided off his Facebook/Instagram, but it seemingly is just a promotion scheme. Admitted to a lost in interest for teaching and wanting to become an book author. Do not recommend.
If you don't want to have a bad professor, Be warned not to take his class!!!
I am 100% sure you should never take his class because this professor is very lazy! He had no announcement for the students in 18 weeks Or the feedback!
Doesn't respond to emails, never shows up to class, and grades super harshly with no communication on why he grades the way he does. I wouldn't recommend this professor at all! Also, didn't tell us about our final paper until the week before it was due, and then changed the rules of the paper the day before it was due...I hated this class!
This was the simplest grade I've ever gotten. Yall are tripping
If you want to learn more about the course and ask questions to the professor, you have chosen the wrong professor. He will not respond to your questions at all and will 100% not answer your questions. So don't waste your time on this professor and find another one!
Professor Johnson is very condescending. The online course was 8-weeks and consisted of weekly discussions, a few weekly chapter quizzes, 3 reaction papers, and 1 final. Also, at the last moment he changed the final from 50 multiple choice questions, to an essay instead. He also doesn't provide feedback on graded assignments nor responds to emails.
If you have accommodation, I warn you not to take this professor's class. He never followed my accommodation in the 18-week class because I felt that he really didn't take people who needed accommodation seriously!
Dr. Johnson is very awesome! He's smart and very encouraging. I don't see how anyone can say rude things about this teacher such as him being condescending towards students. I've taken him twice and I've never experienced that with him. Leave Dr. Johnson alone.
He is a completely bad professor!
Bad professor!!!
Took in the summer, very manageable if you have a busy schedule. I definitely would take again.
Would NEVER recommend this professor to anyone. Friends of mine told me NOT to take him--and I got my karma for not listening. I'll admit, his work is not THAT difficult, but he completely disregards your life outside of school. Life is unpredictable, tragedies happen, however, he couldn't care less and will not try to understand you nor help you.
Very informative course. Unclear and inconsistent grading. He would give 7.5/10 without any feedback on what to improve. I would randomly get 70% on what I see as my better writings while I'd get surprised to get 100% on my random lazier works. Free textbook and I learned a lot from this course.
I took SOC001 online in Spring 2024. Tonmar Johnson was strict with his assignments. In every discussion posts, he expects more effort = better grade. Also, late work isn't accepted. He doesn't respond to your email but instead announces it in class. If you're picking out classes last minute you'd end up with Tonmar.
Never answers, not good at rubrics/having good criteria, grading varies on things without explanation.
One paper miss and he put me from a 94 to a 74. How is a paper worth only 10 points eliminate 20 grade points?
So, I missed a small paper due to a family emergency and my grade dropped nearly 20 points. I emailed him and got a passive aggressive reply talking about “responsibility” and “integrity”. Take him if you want a GPA pothole!
Not a friendly professor, harsh grading without reason, diffucult to work with, would not recommend at all.
Does not give feedback on discussions so you will never know how to improve. Took him online, and thankfully the textbook was free.
insane and completely unclear grading criteria that seemed to change with every assignment. provides no feedback on papers/discussion posts, just posts one "example" of an exemplary discussion post/reaction paper on canvas in the middle of the semester. accepts no late work no matter what. do not take!
Contemptuous, Derisive, disparaging, arrogant, callous, ethnocentric, and a public shamer. Avoid like the plague. Just don't do it.
By the far the worst inconsiderate teacher at Solano I've had these last 2 years. He offers extra credit which is the only good thing abt this class bc his regular assignments he grades harshly no feedback, one low grade and ur grade goes down a lot so if ur taking his class do ALL xtra credit. Hes dismissive rude and thinks hes on top of the world
I read these reviews thinking I'd be lucky enough to not have the same experience as everyone here but I unfortunately did. He's one of those professors who wants to be called “Dr” like boo u ain't no Dr. If u wait to sign up for a socio class ur unfortunately have no choice to take him.
