good prof, hard tests
GO to class you'll be fine.
Excellent teacher; interesting, clear. Very very helpful. Great guy- take his classes!
I think Prof. Ahrens is a great teacher. I thought his lectures were very clear and are reflected well on his exams. Make sure you read secondary material though! Making it to every lecture is very important too.
An absolute yawn.
so very kind
don't even bother going to class. as long as you read the book, you'll do fine. his lectures are boring (and straight from the text!)
Lectures are kinda borign after awhile, but as long as you take good notes and study them it's easy. Dont even waste your money on the books. Just take good notes on lectures... thats what the tests r on.
Tests are 20% on stuff we have never covered, but is in the book. His lectures get to be realllly boring and they arent very well structured. I don't like it. But there arent that any big projects, just 2 or 3 three page papers.
A good understanding guy, the lessons are pretty straightforward. If you keep up with the readings you will be fine, and it doesn't hurt to miss a lecture or two
Awesome guy. Very nice and friendly. If you like psychology at all, his lectures are really interesting- not boring. He's a lively and animated guy, really; very intelligent. Make sure you can take good notes. i definitely recommend him!
he is superior acting and has a patronizing attitude. he has a tendency to make students feel small.he's boring, and hedoesnt count class participation and attendence..which might be good for some people, but its not good when you see how hard the exams are
He's boring!
Pretty easy but very very boring.
A great guy. He has a geeky sense of humor that makes lectures interesting. I highly recommend taking his class
Lots of notes, but you can tell he really cares what he is teaching about... one of those professors where you have to get used to his style, but as long as you study you will be fine
exams are hard and he is a hard grader. extra credit is available. classes are BORING..he doesnt take attendence- reading is important, lectures are important -- he is willing to help but his "help" doesn't really help at all
so boring. sucks at teaching. i fell asleep in class. TA sucks. HORRIBLE!
Very good teacher
Horrible teacher, very dry, and soooo boring. I went to his class (8:30 am) so tired, and his lectures did little to wake me up so I fell back asleep. His exams were so hard and he grades tough! But extra credit is available on a positive note.
HORRIFYING MAN- HE WAS BORING AND HE WAS A JERK....Basically i went to him for extra help and busted my ass and he didnt help me for**** and i got a C+, the lowest grade i have ever gotten at AU....thanx jerk. He also has a freakish bump on his head and his exams and make up exams are hard.
His tests are pretty hard.
very clear, organized presentations. answers questions; very helpful outside of class too

One class where I felt I actually learned something I could use in real life. Ahrens is a nice person and he cares about his students. His tests aren't hard if you show up for class or the review sessions. He is always there to teach in the office hours if you are gone.

Interesting subject... he's good in small groups... but the tests really aren't fair. They are all essays, and he grades based on what you "should" be able to write in the time period, which basically means you can write as fast as possible and still not have time to do it all... stressful.

HATED his class. worst grade i had at AU. he talked about weird stuff in class and on test day expected you to know stuff he didn't cover clearly.
he is a great guy and so enthusiastic about psych. If you are interested in it at all, take his classes, he WANTS to help you
He knows what he's talking about. He is the MOST helpful prof I have ever had and he cares SO much about his students. If you actually come to him for help before you start slacking then he will know you and help you so much. He listens and understand personal issues. His tests are hard but not impossible. Just write everything you can think of.
AWFUL professor.
Great prof. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand. You definitely learn a lot in his classes, too. The tests really aren't bad if you attend the lectures and the review sessions.
Great professor!! This is the only class I actually wanted to go to all semester. He honestly cares about all his students and is extremely helpful, even with topics outside psych. There are 4 tests (easy if you do the reading and go to class) and plently of extra credit. Take this class - he will make you interested in psych!!
i really liked this class with this prof. you have to pay attention and you should read. but, he is always more than willing to help a student out and is very understanding. if you arent really into psych, this class will bore you, but if it is somethingthat interests you, i defintitely recommend it.
I really enjoyed this class. There are 4 tests and many opportunities for extra credit. The professor is really nice and understanding. I would recommend it!
Although he's very concise and clear in his lectures, he's not really all that exceptional of a professor. He tells us exactly what to know, but never really relates it to daily life or anything. It's more like he's teaching so we can get through it than him truly educating us. Plus it's a lecture so it's really all regurgitation of trivial facts.
Ahrens is the best! For psych-105- he was really helpful and the nicest guy ever. Pretty easy- he didn't take attendance and gave plenty of extra credit. he is the best!
I found his lectures to be really clear but you really have to go to class to do well on the tests (that and pay attention to detail- esp. in the text). Mostly I enjoyed the classes though it did tend to bore me as it got down to the last part of the semester. Not a big fan of lecture classes in general but the material was interesting.
He's very clear about what he's teaching, the tests are difficult if you don't take really good notes and study hard though.
he is the best teacher ever, he makes class easy and is very relaxed about attendence
nice guy. easy to get in touch with and responsive. no homework. 4 tests, the last being the final that is not cummulative. TA gives thorough reviews before every exam. posts practice test before each exam. does not take attendence and classes are big but he does generally know who everyone is. lectures are long and boring.
Prof. Ahrens is really enthusiastic in his class. It's all lecture and you take around 2-3 pages of notes a day so you really should not miss a day. Even though the information is in the textbook readings he goes over other things in class that aren't in there and he also expands what is in the textbook. AMAZING PROF.
Loved him! Prof Ahrens is amazing. If you're interested in psychology I would really suggest taking a course with Ahrens. He's interesting and discusses all aspects of Psychology whether he agrees with them or not. Amazing Prof.
Professor Ahrens is an enthusiastic teacher but often his lectures miss the mark of piqueing student interest. His tests are extremely hard if you have trouble with wrote memory (and he is a very hard grader).
He's a nice guy and is very willing to answer questions, but class is dull if you're not that interested in the material. Tests are like root canal -- you're either able to write exactly what he's looking for or you're not. Reading the textbook in this class is imperative.
The class isn't that hard but the lectures are incredible boring and pointless. Instead of explaining a topic he just gives as many studies as humanly possible. The gradings pretty arbirtary (especially on the papers where NO COMMENTS are given), but its easy to get a B+. id AVOID
Professor Ahrens is an awesome professor. He is able and willing to help any student at any time. Take advantage of his office hours. He is not an easy grader...as a matter of fact, he is extremely picky when grading tests and papers. Even though the TA has review sessions before each exam, I did not find them that helpful.
Very nice guy but notes are very hard to follow, barely any writing, occasional name scrawled on chalk board and grades tests very hard
Very interested in the subject and a great teacher if you're interested in psych. If not, study a lot for the tests because they are all that matters in the class.
Any post saying Ahrens is unaccessible or doesn't care is completely off the mark. He is the most understanding prof I've had and he actually wants students to LEARN! I think most people who have a problem with him or his class are ones who don't want to do work and are looking to coast. Put in the effort and you'll get a ton out of it.
I took this frosh year & liked it. Felt like a real college class. Tony was no b/s. Basically listen, read the book, pass the tests. He did get a bit technical with things for a 101 class, but I think I was expecting a sociology class and not all the science behind psych. I didn't get an A in this class but I could have if I'd studied more.
A very nice, helpful teacher. He doesn't b/s around with you and gives you very clear explanations - there aren't any trick questions. It can be hard to stay awake because of the lecture style of the class and how early in the morning it is.
EXREMELY HELPFUL!! He is really understanding and is willing to help outside of class. awesome class. he gets really excited about the subject and obviously knows his subject. really intelligent take this class and you will love psyc!
Ahrens is great. He's very helpful, laid-back, doesn't require attendance; as long as you do the reading, listen and take notes in class you'll do good on tests and of course do well in the class. very enthusiastic about his subject, helps students the best he can, if you aren't doing well there are extra credit opportunities. take him!!!!!
Professor Ahrens is a great professor who demands a lot from his students. Although attendance is not mandatory, going to class will benefit you in the long run because his tests are a good balance of lecture and textbook. Since most of his exam questions come from the book, it's a good idea to actually read the chapters!
good teacher. very enthusiastic about course material. helpful TAs. test were pretty straight-forward. 3/4 of the content from the textbook, 1/4 from lectures. no pop quizzes.
Advanced Social Psych... Prof Ahrens is clearly interested in the subject. Not a lot of feedback - I feel like I got robbed a bit on my grade. Still, I found both the class and the Professor to be enjoyable and informative.
This is my second class with Professor Ahrens and he continues to impress me. Class attendance is not mandatory but essential if you want to do well. Since he pulls most of the test questions from the book, read it! Great class and a great professor.
Ahrens is my man. This guy is absolutely hilarious and knows what he's talking about. He makes things very clear. Only 4 tests, no papers. Tests are pretty difficult, you definitely have to do the work and study.
Absolutly great teacher! Very clear and understandable lectures. Funny, open to questions, just a great professor!
Be sure to read everything assigned on the syllabus before a test, because seriously, anything can pop up. Also, pay attention during Ahrens's lectures-- you really do get a lot out of them. But you cannot do one and not the other and expect to walk out with an A. Love his geeky sense of humor.
Extremely hard grader. Tests are ridiculous. Question answers are extremely vague. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Great professor! I recommend him to everyone I know. He takes a potentially boring lecture class and makes it interesting and fun. Always willing to talk to you during office hours and knows your name even though there are 50 other people in the class.
Great professor, especially for non psych majors who are taking this for GENED. Quite a bit of reading, but you learn a lot of interesting material.
Very smart and knows his stuff! He's a hard grader for papers, but the tests are very fair and he never springs topics on you that weren't covered in detail either in lectures or in the book. His lectures are very structured and he emphasizes all of the things you need to know. He's always willing to talk to you during office hours. Great guy!
Prof Ahrens is a funny and sweet professor. He's really excited by psychology but I can imagine I would have liked his course more had it not been a lecture class. It was too hard for him to go in detail about the material. He tried his best to help everyone out but there were too many kids - he is still great though!
HE IS THE MAN!!!....great teacher makes class interesting and hes kinda funny....big cardinals fan and always talking about them, definitely take him
Great Professor! His teaching is straight forward and he gives great examples! Come to class, pay attention, and read the textbook and the reading and you'll be fine! He's very helpful and has convenient office hours. He is great with helping prepare for tests and posts the previous years exam and provide review sessions. You'll learn a lot!
Ahrens is a nice guy with good intentions....but he's terribly boring. He explains things over and over again and his lectures could be condensed into 5 minute discussions. This class is really boring and I can't even count the number of times I skipped, and when I did go....I fell asleep nearly every single time. But the class is VERY easy.
Ahrens is so nice and passionate, but I was often bored during class. The class is pretty easy if you pay attention and do the readings so it's good if you need to get your gen ed out of the way. Although I thought the material was easy, tests are sometimes tricky. Easy to get a B though..
I think hes a great teacher. He talks very fast so using a laptop is recommended. Even if you do bad on the first test study really hard for the next and hes usually a grade booster at the end of the semester. With extra credit opportunities if you do it and show effort in it you can usually get a higher grade than you deserve from tests.
Very nice and helpful! Knows what he's talking about. Since his class is lecture base it does get boring at times but he does try to make it somewhat bearable! Do the readings and take notes during the lectures and you'll be able to pass!
Ahrens is a very kind, sweet, and nerdy man. The material is interesting and easy, but he is a very boring lecturer which at times makes it hard and boring. There are 4 non-cumulative multiple choice/short answer exams. His TAs are very helpful, but he does most of the grading. Attendance is optional. Go to TA review sessions and you'll do fine.
Great professor. His tests (including the final) aren't cumulative and as long as you go to class and do most of the reading, you should get an A. He's really good at explaining concepts and always welcomes questions. Also make sure you go to the TA review sessions, they're super helpful.
I took IB Psychology in high school and this was nothing like it. Tests were based on lectures and textbooks. It was a lecture class and attendance wasn't mandatory, but I would suggest going to class. There are 3 tests plus a "final" (non-cumulative). There are 2 extra credit papers offered. You need to work hard for an A though.
He is my favorite! Loved the clas, but it's a lecture class so you can't expect it to be the most thrilling hour of your life. The man is the nerdiest, kindest psych professor I've met. Go to his office hours and he'll explain everything you didn't understand and cares about you as a student. Always asks me how I'm doing and is super encouraging
Ahrens is super enthusiastic about his subject. His lectures can be pretty boring, but he's the nicest guy and he's really understanding and helpful if you go to his office hours. Great GenEd Professor, I thoroughly suggest his class!
One of my favorite professors. Had a class of 150 and was brilliant at keeping it interesting in a lecture setting. Great for office hours, too, if you venture to ask.
Lectures are awesome but often times he gets sidetracked when answering questions. He explains things pretty clearly but sometimes it's hard to tell what's important. If you want help, you'll have better luck with his TAs (understandable considering this was a 150-person lecture). Pretty easy grader.
There is a lot of reading for this course and it's pretty much required that you be a good note-taker. There are also required readings that he will post online that will also be tested over so don't skip over those. The tests reflect mainly on your readings, but in class he summarizes them and goes over things in lectures that will be on tests.
One of the best professors. His lectures are captivating and he is always willing to help outside of class. His tests are tricky but as long as you go to class and take good notes, you'll be fine. TA's are passionate and super helpful too
Honestly such a great professor. His lectures are super clear and there are only 4 noncumulative tests and 2 really short and easy papers. As long as you keep up with the readings (which aren't that bad) and go to the lectures fairly regularly you can easily do well.
Really enjoyed his class, the lectures could be boring but they are super important for the test. Even though it's a large lecture, he still tries to make it somewhat interactive. He's very passionate about psychology and his class influenced me to finally declare myself as a psych major. I was personally able to get by without doing the readings.
I LOVE Prof Ahrens. Best professor I've ever had. So passionate about psychology and has really interesting lectures. Tests are completely fair--if you study, you'll get a good grade. If you don't study, you won't. Take a class with Dr. Ahrens.
This class is very lecture heavy and is not the best class for individuals who learn best through visualization. The exams are bested off of the lectures and the textbook readings. He does not take attendance, therefore it is not mandatory. Skipping lectures may put you behind when it comes time to study for an exam.
This is a lecture heavy class wherre attendance is not mandatory, but needed to pass the class. The exams are 75% of what you learned in lecutres and 25% what you read in the book. If you show up and take notes, read the book and study you will get an A. you also only have four grades in the class and they are all tests.
The class is graded based on four (curved) exams, two extra credit papers, and a separate research participation component. There are also two review sessions before each exam. Attendance to class lectures and review sessions is not mandatory, but recommended. I recommend this class to anyone with any interest in psychology. Dr. Ahrens is the best.
Possibly the nicest professor I've had . Makes the material engaging and easy to understand. Your final grade is determined by four tests which are relatively straightforward. I strongly recommend going to class and taking great notes. His lectures are easy to follow but pay attention to even the smallest details and examples. READ THE BOOK!!!
He is a very hard professor. Doesn't acknowledge his students stress when asking for extension. He is not that specific with test, if you you struggle with English you'll struggle with his tests too. His lectures are overwhelmingly heavy, you miss a class you missed a lot.
Professor Ahrens truly cares about his students and will work with you until you achieve what you want. My first exam did not go well, but I went to his office hours and he gave me study strategies. After every exam, he would email me congratulating me on my hard work. The class wasn't easy, you do have to put in some time, but it's worth it.
I loved intro to Psych with Prof. Ahrens. If you take notes during class, and do the readings, you will most likely end with a good grade. He also is very accessible by email and office hours. Tests aren't difficult as long as you pay attention, and he does offer some extra credit. His lectures are also very interesting!
Ahrens is an overall gem of a professor, and I could not recommend taking at least one class with him enough. If you get the opportunity to work/TA with him, I highly recommend doing it.
Solid Professor,
I love Professor Ahrens. He really cares about psychology and its reflected when he teaches. Hes incredibly kind and always answers questions thoughtfully. Very test heavy, but he graded very leniently, if you do the work you will do well. Hes very nice and respectful. His lectures were never boring and even though you dont HAVE to show up, do.
Prof. Ahrens is a genuine guy. He cares about the class but bro does not stop making examples of things. He makes so many examples that I've forgotten about the concept by the time we're done. You can get just as much if not more out of the class purely by reading the textbook. He says a whole lot without saying anything at all.
Not very organized, everything is based on his lectures which are slightly boring and very hard to follow. He is clearly very knowledgeable but not the best at explaining things. Tests are weighted so heavily but are difficult to get a good grade, if you are on the verge of knowing a concept he will not give it to you.
Professor Ahrens is absolutely amazing! I had him for Psychology 100 in the fall of 2020 so the class was taught online because all classes were back then but he was so helpful! The class was big since it's an introductory course but he had a graduate TA and roughly 7 other TA's who worked with the class in small groups and held office hours.
Professor Ahrens' lectures are interesting and very example-based. The tests are fairly straightforward and based on lecture and the textbook. The reading isn't extreme, but there is about one or two chapters covered per week. He is very helpful and offers test corrections after tests. The TA is also very helpful and offers study sessions.
Professor Ahrens lectures were okay, a bit hard to follow, but the tests are very hard. There is a lot of textbook reading and he does not expect you to have an A in the class.
If you want to learn psych he is a great professor. bc he is teaching so much content 20% of the tests come straight from the textbook, which can be hard. If you want to put in the work you will get a good grade, but be warned, do the homework and go to the lectures.
lectures are really bad there's no visual aid he just scribbles random words on a piece of paper and his handwriting is so bad that it's not even legible or helpful. but as long as you pay attention, take notes, and read the textbook its very passable
I don't really know why I took psych because I am not a psych major, so that is my mistake. I think because I hate psychology I didn't have a good experience with him, but he is overall a good professor.
His grading system is honestly ridiculous, he takes the average grade on a test and that score gets a B-. 50% scores above a B- and 50% below. He doesnt have any powerpoints to follow and will write one word on a piece of paper and ramble for 20 minutes before repeating the process. Lectures often feel scattered and he made it hard to do well.
So many people told me to take Dr Ahrens. Dont be fooled. His lectures are confusing & he forgets to tell us when he moves on to new topics. His tests are difficult even if you study hard. His grading criteria for the class in general makes no sense. Participation doesnt matter because he will not learn your name. Gives -little- extra credit.
Unclear grading criteria
This class is pretty difficult for an intro class, but if you put the work in by taking notes and studying it isn't so bad. He doesn't use PowerPoints for his lectures, he handwrites on paper which may deter some people. He isn't a bad guy but it is a bit difficult so I wouldn't take his class if you don't have to.
Dr. Ahrens is an incredible professor. He is very fluent in everything Social Psych. His tests require a good amount of studying but a generous curve is applied. Although I don't believe attendance is mandatory, don't bother taking the class if you don't want to show up, it will make the tests and papers 10x easier.
This is the second class I've had with him and I love his lecture style. That being said, stay away from this class if you don't like lecture. He doesn't post any notes/slides and the exams mainly come from class discussion material. Lectures can get boring sometimes but he is passionate about the topic which helps. Does have 1pg papers due 2x/week
Really nice guy, however lectures are all over the place. (I know it's an intro course, but he really jumps around a ton.) He also just scribbles down words on pieces of paper, which is usually not legible. However, he does have a ton of knowledge and is passionate.
The class felt a bit boring at times, because it is an intro class. Thankfully, Professor Ahrens had pretty engaging lectures. Tests are the main portion of your grade, so be ready to study and take good notes.
Psych 100 with Professor Ahrens is a challenging course, but staying on top of the textbook and lectures can pay off. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice tests - highly recommend!
Your entire grade is based on four exams. You won't have to attend class, but you can't get away with only reading the textbook and not showing up for lectures. If you pay attention, this class will be fun for you.
He seems to be passionate about the topic, but he does not provide ANY supporting material (no notes, no slides, no study guide, no nothing). The class itself is extremely unstructured and chaotic. 2 papers due each week. Straight lectures, no engagement, and often refuses to answer questions. Just doesn't seem like he cares about students learning
Professor Ahrens is a great guy. However, his lectures jump all over the place. We truly didn't know what to take away from each class. He's passionate, but each class feels like you bought a one way ticket to confusion town. Make your notes good--- the final is worth 40% of your grade and you don't get a study guide. (It's also partly cumulative.)
Very disorganized lectures with long anecdotes that are not useful. Lecture notes are posted after each class, but are almost incomprehensibly sparse. Passionate, but the class is just not engaging. None of the tests are that hard if you just show up with how he curves them.
Nice guy, but his lectures make absolutely no sense. No notes or slides, just a piece of paper he writes a few words on. If you take good notes, you're set with the way he curves it. Make sure you read the textbook too. Overall not bad for an intro psych class, just take good notes and read the textbook and you're gonna get an A
