He's a funny guy, very lenient on all due dates, assignments and all that. He can seem to go fast, but if you do what you're supposed to, it's an easy A. If you're technologically challenged or lazy, you may have issues.
I am taking this class online, and just as long as you do the assignments you are good. I am constantly emailing him, and he always responds. I have no negative remarks to say about this professor. The class is not hard, but you do have to put an effort into your work.
Mr Biehl is very helpful.i took this course in fall 09 and was always emailing him with the simpliest problems and he always helped. a lot of work but he is a great teacher and all you got to do is do the work.
I hate/don't know anything about computers. I took his basic comp class over the winter. There's a lot of work in a short amount of time so you can't get left behind. I didn't buy the books but used the ones in the library after class. He's very helpful as long as you don't ask stupid questions. Definitely take his class if you're looking for units
Not hard, probably one of the easiest teachers for the class. Boring, forgetful and disorganized. Doesnt feel too comfortable with questions. Take him if you want an easy A or B. To get a C in his class you he to be really lazy.
Probably one of the most fun classes I HAVE EVER taken. I look forward to going to class. He is a little over the place with lecturing over PowerPoint but it wasn't a hard class really but man. SOME of the BEST NOTES I have ever seen. He helps you when you really need it. He is definitely quirky but a class and teacher not to be bushed aside.
Oh.My.Gosh. worst teacher ever. We are all doomed. We are all going to fail this class and we haven't even taken the midterm. Assignments every week, Labs and quizzes. They close and he doesn't even grade them. Sad sad class. I am not taking him again ever.
Run for your life. Bad Bad Bad teacher. Easy to pass but not to get an A. He knows some but gets stuck ALL THE TIME. Can't drop so oh well.
He is not that bad. I felt lost during class and reading textbook(it's so long and hard) as well, but the test is not hard if you read textbook and try to understand what he is saying during class.
As a human, he is very good person. However, as a teacher he is a little lazy and unprepared. I would like to see him taking less classes and spend more times on lecturing.
Biehl is ok. A lot of GCC CSIS majors take him for some reason. It's hard to actually learn anything though. Passing his class was a synch but I wish he teached better and is motivated. That's the one thing I totally did not see from this prof.
He is a good man but definitely not a good teacher. Passing his class is easy but if you want to actually learn something, don't take him. He is always very unprepared. He looks at the book materials like he had never seen them before! I wish I have other choices to not taking his classes anymore.
Excellent instructor. Very, very helpful. I went to him for help many times in his office and he always helped me. Passionate about his profession.
Very knowledgeable, very helpful. Ask for help and he will be more than willing to help you understand what you need to know. He tells some corny jokes, but if you can look past that, a great professor.
This guy does not know how to teach. I passed his class with a B but had to learn from other sources such as YouTube videos, google searches. His lectures are boring as he only reads from his lecture notes. He doesn't try to engage the students, he's very unrelatable and that causes him to not be able to tell when to slow down.
Good guy, but he can be very confusing. He definitely has some personality which may or may not throw you off when he's lecturing for three hours straight. I, personally, had to take my own time to learn from the book because I could not understand a lot of the material he covered in class. Still, great guy and the workload is generally easy.
Terrible Terrible professor. It seems like he completely abhors teaching, yet he teaches. He seems to get upset when students don't understand concepts or when they ask questions. He "teaches" the material as if he is reviewing it for himself. He just glosses over everything, and mumbles and speaks very quickly so he is hard to understand.
Good guy, he'll help you out. Hybrid class with a lot of assignments nearing the end of the semester which is good 'cause I needed the grade boost. His lectures aren't always clear or engaging, but the material is not difficult as long as you practice. That being said, I wouldn't take Biehl again just because his teaching caters to a specific niche
Awful. The first half of this class is easy. Study the book and youll do well on the midterm. The 2nd half is a different story as he has programming labs where even the book wont help. Youll have to ask him. The problem is he is very condescending and plain rude when answering questions and isnt really all the great at interpreting your question.
He's a decent teacher, manages to lecture fairly well (at a fast pace, though). One weirdquirky teacher that tends to have this personality during teaching, when met face to face with the guy, its impossible to be personable with him. He almost has this gaze that stares down your soul. His grading for an intro class is way too tough.
This guy is COMPLETELY AWFUL. He teaches as if he's talking with himself. Doesn't care about the students at all. This teacher is so bad that us as students started messaging each other JUST to understand on what the assignments are. Never take this teacher. He graded the work i did right, and put 0's even tho its right. Awful teacher, never again.
his motto is to "always do it the lazy way", and yes if you program it should be simple so it's easy to find errors. Yet he himself is lazy. Always coming to class late, with an excuse. Lectures as if he is reviewing for himself rather than teaching. You will need to watch YouTube videos or read over the slides to understand(lectures are not clear)
HE IS A BORRING TEACHER AND WHEN GIVING A LECTURE OR DOING A PROJECT IN CLASS HE TENDS TO BE CONFUSING. HE GOES TO FAST AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT IT.
he is a great teacher, he has great characteristics , however you should study alot to keep up with the class.....
I consider him more of an instructor rather than professor. His lectures are really boring and dull. He expects you to know what youre doing when you ask him for help. You have to study on your own lectures arent much of a help.
Professor Biehl was an okay. He assumes you know more about CS than you should for an intro class. This was my first CS class(never having any CS experience prior) and I felt like I had to teach myself a little. He helps with any questions but his lectures are boring. I got an A but I had to try really hard to get it.
He assumes you know everything, he goes too fast. Most of the questions in the HW wasn't even mentioned in class. I had a breakdown while working on my homework because I didn't understand anything and felt stupid. After reading comments here I know why. I have to read and learn by myself.
I'm taking his class right now, and seriously regret my decision. Possibly the worst professor ever. All he does is mumbles, reading the book's powerpoint - spending 1 minute on each slide and not explaining anything. When it comes to labs, he doesn't even know how to do the program!
Just an absolute disaster. The class moves at breakneck speed and his lectures are non informative. You will be tested harshly on concepts which he will barely brush over during lecture. The reading material is extensive, and on top of that there is the homework and quizzes. I come to class to not lose attendance points, simply miserable.
He canot teach mumble worse professor ever taken in gcc omg he is horrible
Is he a nice person? Yeah he seems alright. But in terms of actually being a teacher, he's horrible. Lecture consists of him reading slides from the book. There is no room for questions, there is no discussion, just him reading. It's odd, I've never been in a class where I've been read at. Stay away if you can.
there is good professor and bad. i can tell you he doesn't belong none of those categories he is just awful i will let managment know about this professor because he is not good candidate to be a teacher i don't know how he get this job man!!!!
Man. Just don't take this guy if you can. Because honestly, there isn't a difference between having him as a teacher and learning all the material by yourself. If you come to class expecting to be helped in learning something, you are sorely mistaken. It's all you. The quizzes are easy, but his homework is out of this world in terms of difficulty.
this guy can't even grade his homework assignments properly. worst part is that hes like the ONLY teacher who teaches any data structure/arch classes. Better off going to LAVC, PCC, etc. and taking it with an actual teacher. otherwise your in for a bad time.
man this guy is horrible! assigns so much homework and his tests are incredibly difficult! i wouldnt mind but he does not teach! if you have a job or anything else good luck! you need to learn all this by yourself because his class is not helpful!
The material is difficult, but it is enjoyable. However the teacher is not. I can't speak for other classes since this is my first encounter, but he's pretty bad. Just make sure to study by yourself, maybe bring some headphones so you aren't distracted by him during class.
prepare to do everything urself! i only goto class cus he takes off points if you dont show up. honestly am more productive not going than I am going to his "lectures"
He's a good teacher and willing to help students out but his teaching methods are horrible. I only go to class for attendance points (5-10% of the final grade). His lecture is based off the book and its easy to understand if you read ahead, but again his teaching method is horrible. He's a nice guy and his class can be confusing at most point.
The first half of computer architecture seems like its an easy class learning about hardware and their purposes that intertwine with software, but when its the second half if you don't read or pay attention or come to class, you won't understand a thing. he uses his own language that he created for second half called stack_8 and its a major fail
The class was a nightmare. He allows late assignments but takes forever to grade. If it wasn't for my classmates/internet I don't think I would have passed!I learned a lot in his class but it was a battle. Understand functions for Midterm and OOP for Final. Avoid his class if you can, if ur a cs major and he is the only prof available, good luck.
Currently enrolled in 2 classes and I feel the need to leave a rating already. Words can't describe my pain but he can't teach to save his life. Lectures are uninformative and he assigns a lot of homework with SUPER vague descriptions. Decided he wanted to skip the intro to 165 and jump into code without teaching us any of it. STAY AWAY IF U CAN!
Such as life, you get what you put in. With that said, Prof Biehl is actually a good Professor if you put your best foot forward and engage him in class. Also, a good tip, if you don't know how to do something -- ask. Ask questions, seek help, even if it means during office hours. He's really great at explaining things on a 1 on 1 basis.
Not as bad as everyone says. Read the slides (or book) and attend class. He shows you how to do everything.
Doesn't really leave room for question asking. he most just reads looking down at his computer sitting on his desk. Doesnt seem like hes interested in interacting with the students, to top this off its so damn hard to understand him. His voice constantly diminishes into a mumble. Seen professors with way bigger classes be more engaged in lectures.
very good professor just ask him for help he will make sure you understand. tends to be on the shy side so you have to approach for help.. have had him for 165 166 and 125 will love to take him for more classes but its time to transfer :)
very good professor just ask him for help he will make sure you understand. dont let this page scare you everyone who posts negative stuff here just comes to class and surfs the web instead of paying attention. put in the work you will definitely get the grade
He's always willing to help you especially if you come to his office hours if you want an A just talk to him
Tony Biehl knows his stuff, but knowing doesn't equate to being good at teaching, Biehl will lose you as well as everyone in the class because he treats terminology like everyone is already a master, best way to truly pass is self-teach and read the textbook, asking for help is an option but he tends to get condescending in tone when asking.
Absolutley horrible. I was so stressed in the class because he knows nothing about teaching. He made me lose my motivation after like 1 month. Do yourself a favor dont take him. I barely passed with a B because I found assignments online. If you're a CS major and actually wanna learn, don't take him
Just trust me and don't take his class.
Great professor don't recommend if you are just getting your toes wet you are going to be stressed out once you know your stuff I highly reccomend him as well if you are having trouble in any other CS/IS class he's the man to go to he's willing to help you even if you're not in his class when he has time of course great 1 on 1
He is one of those teachers that are super nice but their teaching style is absolute garbage. Only take his class if you 100% know what your doing in coding, if not then you are better off taking someone else. IM SERIOUS. His midterms are unfair I went from a high B to a low C very hard to bring it back up. His teaching is very confusing.
You get one lab, one homework assignment, one video to watch, and one quiz to do every week. It's rather easy to complete them a week early, giving yourself less to worry about, but he will consistently be a chapter or two ahead of the class when it comes to lectures. Be ready to be working on chapter three material while he discusses chapter five.
Very bad professor. I gotta thank him though. Made me lose my motivation in computer science and i got into business and now i love accounting. Thats how bad he was. I didnt learn anything and it was hard to teach everything to myself. Dont stress yourself and put yourself in a class where you will be depressed everyday. Dont take him. Biehl is bad
If you feel like taking a programming class where the professor is scared of using code from C++11 (2014) or newer, be my guest. You'll be teaching yourself most of the material, and there are much more efficient solutions to everything. You can get an A without paying attention in class, but he does take attendance so good luck with entertainment.
This guy is the reason im not a computer science major anymore. He is a terrible professor and a terrible person. But im grateful that i changed my major now. Better off with accounting than computer science. Lost all my motivation with this guy and all i had was stress and i hated coding.
Great professor who cares for the students. The people who complained here were lazy and did not pay any attention in class. If you need any help his office is always open and he loves to answer questions. I took every cs class with him and loved it .... highly recommend.
Very good professor. Straight forward midterm and final that are based on the notes and labs. He definitely deserves better ratings.
I am appalled by the poor ratings given to this wonderful and kind soul. He is a literal gem in a sea full of professors and needs to be respected. I honestly cannot fathom why anyone would give this gentleman anything less than a 5-star rating. He is knowledgeable in the field of ARM assembly and x86 and also has tons of experience.
He's a real tough grader. Don't take his class if you care about your GPA.
I took CS 112 with him and I won't forget the stuff that we learned, he makes learning easier by doing more actual coding than reading or listening. Answers almost every question you have and gives easy tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. Take CS courses as PCC or any other campus since he's the only professor that teaches all of the higher CS courses here at GCC. Literally expects you to know how to code in languages like Fortran and COBOL for a lab and does an awful job at explaining how to do so. I hate my life now because of this class.
Personality-wise he's a good professor but in terms of teaching I can't say for sure. He reads the slides in the class and that was it. He'll give homework and assignments which is good and he answers questions and emails with care for students. Take him but try to not depend on him to understand things and do your part and then some.
Professor Beihl is a nice guy and makes himself accessible if you need help. However his teaching style leaves a lot to be desired. His lectures are almost pointless as he just reads of slides and mumbles through them, so its hard to even understand whats hes saying. Dont rely on him to learn and grasp the concepts. You get what you put in
How is this guy still teaching I don't get it. Needs to retire.
Horrible teacher, only teaches through PowerPoint given by the book does not explain well either. The homework is very vague and is a very tough grader
He is a good guy but his PowerPoint materials and lectures wont help you pass the course. You need to read the textbook and learn most of the stuffs yourself. If you have any problem with homework, better to ask him in the office hour. Hes willing to help. He provides extra credits and you can submit late work with labs and homework.
Be ready to learn everything on your own, this man is not a good teacher. His lectures are pretty much useless, but the powerpoints that he uses (not his, different professor's) are pretty useful. Most of your grade will come from the test/final, but I found them relatively easy, and he let us use notes. Not good if you actually want to learn.
it would be helpful when a professor knows the topic that they are teaching. he will do a practice problem and barley explain how to do it and the cherry on top is he will go to the slide that answers the question to understand what's going on then goes back to the problem as if he knows what he is doing. You have to teach yourself the material.
Here's the thing. Prof Biehl knows his stuff. But as others have said, he tells rather than teaches--it's like he's worked in CS so long he can't recall what it's like to be new to it all. That said, he's responsive to questions, has office hours every day, and is generous with final grades. Also, workload is relatively light for an advanced class.
Please don't take this guy's class unless you are already fluent in C++ first day and he didn't teach anything then loaded us up with a ton of homework and only 1 day to do it even though the next class was days away. He will offer extensions at the cost of a reduced score but will not help you at all.
Professor Biehl is such a bad lecturer that he confused me when reviewing topics that I had already learned in previous terms. Let that sink in for a minute, the man couldn't explain something to me that I already knew. Save yourself the headache and take someone else. Though he means well, this professor is a lost cause. His lectures are a mess.
PROS: He's nice, accessible at office hours, gives SO MANY late days to complete missing assignments - just ask. CONS: Incomprehensible at speaking, boring lectures, must be proficient at C++ already to survive (or DON'T fall behind), and not great at responding to e-mails. My advice: form study groups and take advantage of office hours to do well.
Okay let me start by saying Tony is the textbook definition of a mediocre professor that doesnt communicate. Attendance is required, there are discussions and quizzes everyweek and plenty of labs and assignments. Email responses take forever. Grading takes over a month for anything and is usualy nitpickd to an extreme. Not hard but frustrating.
The professor's class is disappointing. He relies solely on the book's slides without adding any of his own insights, making his lectures unengaging. He often appears unprepared, and reading the slides verbatim, providing little value beyond answering questions. Self-study is necessary, as his lectures lack substance.
I am always reading the reviews of the professors that I am willing to take. Tony was not an exception too. Surprisingly, I saw that he has a very low rating and I was a little confused on how I will pass the class. Let me say that he was a great person who is always happy to help students and the way that he teaches is very fun. Do your work just!
The majority of the people who wrote the reviews were lazy students who are not willing to learn anything. They expect to earn a very easy A without doing anything. Tony was an honest person with a great personality. You earn what you do. Study everything, do your homework and you will be fine. Wish, his rating will be 5/5. He deserves that.
Have a 4.0 GPA, took him twice and aced both his classes. Contrary to some of the reviews claiming lazy students are trying to blame him for their lack of initiative I am here to say he is the single worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of learning from. I had to teach myself everything and learned less than nothing from all his lectures.
Do not take him for the love of God
Time to retire. Explains surface level and expects us to know the rest. Yes, you can probably do well studying on your own, but his lectures are extremely frustrating as he constantly "goofs". The language he teaches, pep/9, is irrelevant now and there are NO resources online for it. I muted his zoom lectures by the 2nd week for my mental sanity.
This is my second rating just because he was so bad.
1) Dude is actually tweaking in a class. Starts moving his hands up and down like is an addict lol. 2) Super inaudible, cannot understand most of the words. 3) The book that he used was poorly written. One good thing about the guy, he always helped when I asked a question and never gave attitude like others would.
This guy is quite literally, the worst professor I have ever had. To get a B I am fighting for my life. Please, for the love of God. DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM. This is the worst mistake you will make and you'll know after two weeks.
This guy needs to retire. Bros paid too much to be doing this bad, he needs to retire for the students' sake because it's just impossible to learn anything in his classes. He reads straight from the slides and doesn't give any insight, making his lectures very unengaging. He literally yelled at a classmate for asking questions. Please save yourself
This guy isn't just the worst professor at GCC, he's the worst professor, full stop. He clearly does this gig for the check. He'll even say that the lectures he gives are putting himself to sleep. Acts condescending to students asking questions and cares little about what they've actually learned. Take data structures/x86 at PCC instead, trust me.
I'd rather drag my sack through an entire field of cacti before I enrolled in one of this guy's classes again in this lifetime. Unfortunately the school likes holding its students hostage and only gives us the option of taking him for many of the higher level programming classes now that Shroyer is gone. His existence is a net negative to the world
Contrary to many reviews I liked him a lot. He could be a little knitpicky when grading but he's lectures were good and easy to understand. He also has a super generous late work policy and I honestly enjoyed a lot of the assignments. They were satisfying puzzles and solidified the content.
Professor Biehl is undeniably the epitome of excellence in academia! With his mastery of computer science meow concepts transcend ordinary teaching methods. Grrrgrr, his lectures are like a symphony of wisdom, captivating students with every word. His guidance errrwwrmm empowers students to reach new understandings. Absolutely brilliant, Ah phooey!
I'd rather be drafted into a war and become a p.o.w. then sit through another one of Tony's lectures. I've never seen someone more knowledgeable then him at a subject be equally as incompetent in imparting that knowledge unto others. It becomes painfully obvious he just doesn't care about his students as long as someone signs his paycheck.
I came out of this class a worse programmer for having taken it. Why anyone would hire this man to teach anything is beyond me. Whatever semblance of him that may have been a good professor decades ago is nothing but a withered fading memory at this point. He is nothing more than a little monster terrorizing the harder compsci courses.
This guy will mutter and slur his speech for an hour straight with no effort made to enunciate past the first syllable of any word. His lectures are an incoherent, unintelligible, unstructured, 60 minute word vomit. He'll make up his own garbage coding language and force the class to learn the course material by using it.
(Continuation of post below) If you don't understand his barely functioning language then you're out of luck because there is no resources online for you to supplement your learning with. His slides are absolutely useless and his guides for the midterm & final are a few bullet points telling you what chapters to read. It's so clear he doesn't care.
I'll get straight to it. Lectures are incredibly unengaging. Makes you work on projects around the code he provides (which don't work 90% of the time), that gives the student 0 room for creativity. When hes grading, he'll give the most bland feedback with a 0. The only redeeming thing he has is that he gives a 1 day grace period on all assignments.
It's always been about love and hate, now let me say I'm the biggest hater I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk I hate the way that you dress
I hate the way that you sneak diss, if i catch flight its gone be direct
I don't know why he has so low rating. I believe that he is worth much more. The class is hella hard but he helps a lot.
This man is the bane of my existence
Tony Beihl is the bane of my existence.
I joined his class earlier, I don't even take the class. but the guy is legit. I had no idea what he was talking about but he seems chill. I would definitely want him teaching me assembly.
This man is without a doubt in my mind the worst human on this planet. He does NOT teach you the material, and will instead flung at you what is possibly the worst book to ever be written and expect you to pass. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE SUBJECT BEFORE YOU TAKE THE CLASS YOU WILL FAIL. Don't take the reviews above mine lightly.
Do NOT take this guy. I am WARNING you. Class started with 30 ppl, 1/3 has dropped out, only 6-7 ppl even bother attending the zoom meetings for extra points. He reads off slides that are older than you and adds nothing to it. He is also completely, UTTERLY incoherent (maybe recovering from a stroke?), the subtitles wont even help you. RUN! NOW!!!!
I don't think he deserves the hate some of these ratings are giving. Yeah his lectures are bland but he's quite understanding.. I had a lot of missing assignments and he let me still submit it for 20% off. Like compared to a lot of other CS Professors he's alright.
This professor's teaching style can be hit-or-miss. While his expertise is undeniable, his lectures can be dull and unhelpful. To succeed, you'll need to rely heavily on the textbook and outside resources like Unstuck ai. But with effort, it's possible to do well in the course.
be prepared to learn ancient technology on your own
LEAVE MR. BIEHL ALONE! I don't get the negative reviews—he's a great professor! Fair grader, super lenient with late work, and quick to respond. He's clear about grading, knows his stuff, and the labs were actually fun. Put in effort, communicate with him, and you'll do well! Don't listen to the hate—just try your best and you'll be fine! :)
Feel like these reviews give him a bad rap. Lectures always felt really solid and struck a good balance of him demonstrating how to write code and reading off lecture slides. He definitely always seems unprepared, though, like he never has any clue what he's gonna lecture about. Still he's really nice with late work and I thought he was funny lol
I took both Java & C++ with him and passed with A's. I really enjoyed the labs and learned a lot in his class. He's clearly really passionate about Computer Science and made the lectures engaging. In my opinion Mr. Biehl's always a safe bet.
nice guy, is helpful in lectures, and responds to emails. Only issue are the lectures are pretty unhelpful, you'll have to study a LOT outside of class. Projects are an issue of its own, you need to rewrite the skeleton he gives you so it can work. Explains the material okay-ish, but needs to work on how to implement the material in code.
That mumbling, stuttering, doughball can't give a cohesive lecture to save his life. Many of the positive reviews seem to come from students in intro courses, where it's possible to stumble your way into an A. Try learning low-level microcode from some obscure bs assembly language he unearthed from the lost annals of time. That mumbling
