He does not care about anything but lifting weights. If you dont; you'll fail.
He is tough- very tough. But he does want you to learn it- quit crying and learn
cool guy-has gotten much easier for hes 10 course
No Comments
His lecture style is good and he is very fair. The only people who think he is hard are students that don't do the work and probably aren't interested in learning.
This guy is great - best class I've taken in my 3 years at Furman!
Great class! Test aren't bad. You have to do your workouts. If you keep up with your reading in the book, you should do fine.
Take this guy in the summer. His classes are fun and you learn a lot without too much busy-work. He really seems to care.
take it in the summer IF YOU CAN! ITS ALOT OF WORK AND YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP...HARD BUT YOU LEARN TAKE IT FIRST IF YOU ARE A MAJOR
Cool guy - I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot. Got a good grade too.
I took Dr. C this summer and had a great experience. Best class I've taken at Furman - best professor on campus.
Not too bad. Condescending when he gives tests back. He's not too hard, though. From what I hear, there are HES profs that are better and ones that are worse.
Horrible! Talks too much about wrestling and Buffalo and too little about what he should. Get another professor!
He's intimidating because he lifts so much weight. He should be more considerate by not lifting so much. Awesome class!
Come enjoy class and his ass!!! Oh my gosh, he's such a stud!!
Great class. I learned so much that is actually applicable to my life now and for the future. Spring '03 he let you work out however you wanted and classes were a cinch if you just learned the brief notes and read through the chapters.
He looks like Toby Zeigler from the "West Wing", so if that's hot to you....As far as HES goes he is definitely on the harder end of the spectrum. Not quite Yockey, but take Moss or Frazier if you can.
Great teacher! Awesome lectures and doesn't make you work out hard at all! Very easy and enjoyable!
talks like a jock, but know his stuff. very intelligent. tests are thorough, so you should study. Online quizzes helpful for studying. I loved his class!
I think he is the BEST professor at Furman. Very entertaining in his lectures. Very understanding when you have problems with the class.
Toby Ziegler???? Maybe if he was on steroids. This guy is built and a good professor. He did a great self-defense class for my sorority. His classes were fun and I learned a lot about staying in shape. I highly recommend his class.
Likes you if you are an athlete! Still, hes a great teacher and very smart. Loves what he does.
Easy class. Take notes, make flash cards, and you'll do fine. You've gotta like this guy - then 6 points extra credit for doing better on the second test helps alot - gives 3pts on FINAL AVERAGE for doing the labs, so do them -
Great class - this guy should do stand-up. makes classes entertaining and gives you lots of chances to get a good grade with his curving of tests.
I loved this professor! So far the best I've taken at Furman. I learned so much that has helped me get into a good fitness routine, especially with weight training. I recommend you sign up early because his class fills up quick.
I really dreaded taking this course but Dr. C has made it interesting and I actually can see results. I love the discussion sessions! This has been my favorite class here at Furman.
This man makes me want to shoot myself in the face! He is the most frustrating professor I've had to deal with at Furman. ALthough his tests are easy, his temper and partiality are not worth putting up with. If you are not a female then just don't even try. Unreasonable.I burned my HES book immediately after my exam...if that tells you anything.
Very good professor; although his tests are hard, he curves grades at the end. Easy A if he likes you.
He is almost painfully easy. You will make an A as long as you don't make him mad. Tests are not cummulative and seriously you only need to study like an hour for them. Also, he lets you do whatever you want in the PAC for work-out days. VERY VERY VERY EASY but don't expect to learn ANYTHING.
terrible class... labs are graded rediculously, too many quizzes, huge text... be ready to have no life!
Great professor to take HES with. Easy, clear, and will help you out. Do the labs because he gives you bonus points on your final average. Study for tests and you'll be fine.
Took this class this summer and really enjoyed it, but it was a lot of work. Dr. C is great and really cares that you learn. We didn't write up labs so I can't comment on earlier reviews, but I think he is great.
Good professor. Doesn't make the class tougher than it has to be. I don't get the previous review's rant. Must have been a personality thing.
Dr. Caterisano is great and you will learn a lot assuming you have half a brain and aren't sleeping in class. He doesn't just teach the text and the discussions are great. Take him!
Great prof. excellent class. You will learn a lot about exercise and diet. I don't get the people who say he isn't a good teacher. They are obviously lazy and here at Furman to party rather than learn.
Best prof at Furman. Great lectures, easy to follow, good sense of humor.
I really enjoyed the class, especially the discussions. Dr. C does a great job of making things clear. Take him.
I have had to wait two years to finally get his class my Jr. year, and it was worth the wait. His lectures are good and he really knows a lot about exercise. I wish I could have taken this class earlier, but it fills up so fast during pre-registration. I guess that tells you something.
Very enthusiastic about exercise and you can't help but get caught up in that enthusiasm. He actually works out with you and is very helpful in answering any questions you have about designing a workout.I am seriously considering an HES major after having taken this class.
I agree with the previous post, his enthusiasm is contagious. I thought I would hate "PE" but he has made it relevant and, believe it or not a pleasurable experience. Take him if you can get his class.
Good professor. His laissez faire attitude about workouts is great. My only complaint is that he gets a bit ****y sometimes, even when he gives bad information. Still the best prof to take.
BEST HES prof in the school! Makes it relevant and makes it interesting. Gives you a chance to make your own workouts so you get to do what you like. READ YOUR BOOK for the tests and study his notes... usually very easy to do well if you do that. Yes, it's HES but it is not a gimme. Really funny guy though. Tony C rules!
Easy class, and the workout days are no big deal. Make sure to take notes in class though - he will make it obvious what will be on the test during his lectures, so WRITE IT DOWN because it WILL be on the test. There's no reason you shouldn't get a B+ or better.
Excellent Prof. but good luck getting his class unless you are a Jr. or Sr. His section fills up quick. I heard that it is easier to get into his class in the summer session.
Good prof. lets you do your own workouts but is available to offer help. Tests are right from the notes and the book. Just put in a little time and a good grade is attainable.
Good teacher - keeps it interesting and you can learn a lot of useful workout ideas. The discussions are really good - makes you think about many of the problems we have in this country with health care and personal responsibility.
Caterisano is a pretty easy teacher as you can create your own workouts and get a pretty good grade pretty easily, but he was sometimes unclear in his notes and tests had ridiculous pointless questions sometimes. I'd say he's good if you want an easy class, but not if you want a really good teacher.
He is very clear about what you need to know for the tests and is a pretty interesting lecturer. He really cares about what he is teaching. If you go to class everyday, take notes, and study 2 days before the test you will get an A. However, if you don't study for test you will fail them. He gives so EC at end. Workouts are not organized
Dr. Caterisano is a good lecturer and does a solid job of relating information to his students. During workouts, I found him easy to approach with questions about how to use the machines. The only problem was with his discussions. He seemed to use them to sway us into believing his version of the truth instead of letting us discuss ours.
The lectures were really easy to follow though he did focus on lifting probably more than any other health science teacher does. He gives lots of extra credit and often hints what will be on tests and wants you to succeed in his class as well as be healthy in life. The workout is not structured so you can just do whatever you want which is nice.
Dr. Caterisano led an interesting and relaxed class for his first year seminar, Healthy America. He is encouraging, and I learned a lot about the topic, but he did tend to favor the more liberal side of issues, and did not always remain entirely neutral. However, I really enjoyed his class, and he was very knowledgable about the material covered.
Nice professor but the exams are tricky and you have to know EVERY LITTLE DETAIL of the book! Workouts were nice because you could do what you wanted to . Overall good professor just not good tests!
Awful and a GPA killer. Once he failed 11 out of like 20 students for a test, and it is almost impossible to make up the grade with three more tests. His lecture is totally different from the book and he said, What's important to know for the test? Everything I said in lecture and everything in the book. No joke, those were his exact words.
Just read the previous review and find it hard to believe. They guy is a good teacher and most people I know who have taken him consider his class to be easier than most of the other professors. I though Dr. Cat gave lots of hints about what was on the tests and offered curves if you did better on your next test, even if you got a good grade.
He is very opinionated and will argue with you if you don't agree with him. His quizzes didn't even make sense even though I read through the material and took notes. He love discussion, but be ready to read like 3-4 books.
Doesn't give any partial credit on tests and he doesn't accept abbreviations. So some questions I got right, but he counted them wrong. He doesn't make powerpoints and the few things he writes on the board are very confusing - so DO NOT take if you are a visual learner like I am. So the class was difficult. Other than that, he is a nice guy.
Good professor. He gives grade curves and extra credit which helped my final grade. Lectures are good and discussions are fun.
Good guy who genuinely wants to teach students about healthy lifestyles. The class isn't exactly easy, but if you put the work in and attend class regularly an A is possible.
This is a heavy lecture class, and it is all taught on the whiteboard. Read the book, COME to class, and participate/take notes. Workouts were good because you could do what you want, but ask him for advice because he wants to help you and is very nice!! Tests aren't impossible, and he does give some extra credit--but you will have to work for it!
Dr. Caterisano is amazing! He is very kind, and his class truly is not bad at all. He lets you do whatever workouts you want. If you want to try a machine in the gym, ask him! He is very passionate about helping people work out & that will also help with your participation grade. If you take notes in class and study the textbook, you will do fine!
The class was 2 tests, a participation grade, and a final (which was just a third test). Nothing is cumulative and he makes it clear what you need to study. You need to do readings in this class, but honestly the readings are so easy that I didn't mind. DO go to class for notes though since he doesn't post powerpoints. Also, workouts are easy.
Half the test is made up of the readings you have to do on your own time which I personally think is stupid. Offers extra credit on tests but thats because they are hard. Forces you to workout and doesn't let you play sports during workout time. No power points so attendance is mandatory. Also isn't very nice or approachable.
Dr. Caterisano is one of the best professors I've had at Furman. He is extremely caring and passionate about what he teaches, and he is eager to give you help with your workouts. You have to buy the textbook (it's expensive) and read it to do well on tests, but it's not very hard,
Dr. Caterisano is fairly easy and will let you do your own thing during workouts. Textbook readings are required but they will help with the tests. The labs in the book are optional for up to 3 points extra credit on your final grade. It can be a little distracting when he walks back and forth during lectures but overall he is a good professor.
Dr. Caterisano is a fine professor, but there are better ones for wellness. Discussions are a part of the class, but do yourself a favor and not mention anything conservative, as he is heavily biased and won't let you speak your mind, even if you have a good argument. Tests are mostly based on reading and do the labs for extra credit.
It's really nice that he allows you to do whatever you want for the workouts, but the 3 tests make up the majority of your grade, and they aren't easy. You cannot miss a class, there are no powerpoints so you're on your own. If you are not a good test taker (or good at biology/anatomy), I do not recommend him for this GER.
Dr. Caterisano is oldschool. we are graded on 3 tests which he makes hard. He is one of the hardest wellness professors. His lectures are hard to follow and he asks random unimportant questions on tests. He also doesnt let us abbreviate common abbreviations on tests. He takes his job seriously and finds joy in failing people who dont give effort
Overall a pretty easy class but you need to do well on the tests to get a good grade. For workouts he lets you do whatever you want. Lectures were okay. He is a pacer. There are only 4 grades: participation and tests 1-3. READ THE TEXT BOOK! He will put obscure, detailed questions from the book on the test that he did not talk about in class.
The hardest GER class I've ever taken at Furman. Very detailed tests and not very nice or understanding. Gives very low grades on tests. Participation is worth a good amount, the only thing that somewhat saved me in his class.
As I sit here and look at the D+ on my transcript, I wonder- how could one get such a grade in gym, where all you have to do is show up. Unfortunately, showing up to Caterisano's class is only a small part of the battle. His class requires tons of memorization and outside work to even make C's on the tests. Rude and condescending, very unhelpful.
As someone passionate about wellness, I thought I would succeed easily in this course. However, Caterisano made the tests practically impossible and after studying eight hours for the first exam, I made a D. I had to take 40 pages worth of notes over the course of two weeks to make barely a B on the final. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Curves saved me.
You have to rely on your daily participation during workout days in order to keep your grade up. His tests are extremely hard even with a reference sheet.
Heres an honest review: Good teacher when it comes to the workout days, lectures are good as well. Test are hard, even with a cheatsheet. Just make sure you pay attention, and read the textbook. Like me, even if you don't do well he will still help you pass, if he sees you are putting in the work. Good teacher overall, and wants you to learn.
Lectures are easy and fun (he has lots of entertaining stories to go along with the materials), he also posts his notes on Moodle, and you can do anything you want during all workouts. The tests were the only challenging part of this course, but he gives curves and extra credit to those who put in effort and participate. His class was enjoyable!
Dr. Caterisano is pretty generous with curving grades, but the tests can be difficult. The lectures get kind of boring, but he likes to add in stories that make it easier to follow. The lab days are good because he lets everyone do whatever they want in the gym.
Listen, the only thing hard about this class are the tests. They are online, multiple choice, 50 questions. It feels like you're never actually fully prepared for his tests no matter what. He's a nice person and honestly he does not care about what people have to say on these ratings.
Dr. Caterisano is a wonderful professor that cares so much about his field of study. It was a pleasure taking his class, as he truly cares for his students and makes sure they do well on his tests. Not much homework except for extra-credit labs. Professor Caterisano is the BEST!
Reading previous reviews I was apprehensive about taking this professor, but his class was the only one with spaces available. I was pleasantly surprised when I took the class and realize that if you do the work, a good grade is possible. Caterisano is a tough grader, but he allows a "cheat sheet" during tests and makes it clear what to study.
Wow, reading the previous reviews it looks like students either love him or hate him. My take is that in my section most of my classmates were first year student. I am a junior and found Dr. Castersano's class to be about par for the course compared to other classes at Furman. You just need to do the work and a good grade is possible.
Dr. Caterisano's tests can be quite difficult. But you get a cheat sheet front and back. Gets distracted a lot during lectures but overall the lectures are interesting. You have to attend the workout days to get a good grade in participation.
This class was difficult for a wellness course. There are easier professors to take it with. He only has 3 tests and allows a cheat sheet for each. The tests are very difficult with the majority of the questions coming from the multiple textbook chapters assigned, so do the reading. Do the lab manuals as you go for extra credit- start them early!!
Dr. Caterisano is great and genuinely cares about his students doing well in this class HOWEVER!!!! this is not an "easy A" type of class The 3 test are your main/only grades for this class and they are HARD. You will get bonus opportunities and he does curve well, but you must put in and show effort
Dr. Caterisano is really awesome and was very approachable and cared about his students doing well in this class. BUT man was it hard!! I thought that this would be an easy class but it gave me a wide awakening. As long as you the effort independently you will do well. He also gives you opportunities for extra credit or a grade booster! Study!
Dr. Caterisano genuinely cares about his students, is funny, engaging, and his lectures are interesting. However, this is a DIFFICULT class and you have to STUDY if you want to make even a B. All of the tests allow for a cheat sheet, but you still have to study.
His class is extremely difficult as you only get three tests with chapter readings, powerpoints, lectures, and videos that could possibly be on the tests. He does curve well but not good enough for how difficult his class was. I would love to take him as a professor for another class but I do not recommend for HSC 101.
i highly encourage everyone taking the MB GER to choose anyone else in this department. professor caterisano seems to have no direction on days when class is in the fitness center, an utter inability to effectively lecture to a class, and is generally plagued by a lack of empathy. he blames poor grades on students, despite not teaching the content.
Dr. Caterisano's class is not for the faint of heart. He is extremely difficult. He does allow for a one page double sided cheat sheet on all three of his exams (none of which are cumulative), but even with his exams are very difficult. You need to read every single chapter and take detailed notes. I would take a different class for an MB credit.
Great lectures, very engaging and actually gives good health advice. Tests are pretty hard but you get a cheat sheet so its not that bad, and he curved most of the tests. Overall a pretty hard but enjoyable class.
Professor Caterisano is a high energy lecturer who tells interesting stories to connect practical application to scientific theories related to exercising. That said, he does expect us to take the course seriously and as he says "this isn't gym class". I did find the material to be interesting, especially since I am planning to do a pre-med major.
