Dr. Jackson can draw writing out of you that you never thought would be possible
I have yet to see him without a smile, he's a great teacher, highly recommend
he is sweet, he states his statements and assignments very clearly, he will help
Very tough grader, but this is actually a good thing because you know when you get a good grade you earned it; one of the best teachers I've had at UNCC
An okay guy, good teacher. I'd take his class again.Don't take him just for a grade. You may not like the grade you get.
Excellent teacher. Strict, but effective. He sets out what he wants from you and he expects it. Touch grader, but he'll make you learn a lot.
good teacher, but personally he isnt very understanding about deaths in the family. you couldnt pay me enough to re-take his class.
Not real even handed in grading, but his class is interesting.I'm a little worried about the moniker of "mentor," Tony. If you help one you should help all.Does it mean that one or two bask in the sunshine of your blessings and the rest fall int
The film class is fun, entertaining, interesting and in no way rigorous. If you fail this class, you should really reconsider staying in college. Someone has to be a janitor.

Jackson was not incredibly hard, but he was very unfocused. He often lost his train of thought in the middle of a sentence. He didn't really teach, but rather answered a question with a question. He makes students feel stupid. I made an A, and I still must warn everyone not to take his class.
If you know how to cry your way out of deadlines and assignments you have it made. If not, you have a C. That's mentorship.
Great teacher. He can be tough grading papers but he will make sure to detail what you did wrong and how you can improve. Some students don't like him because he's not going to let you get away with just any lamebrain interpretation of literature. Godforbid a professor challenges you to think.
Jackson is a terrible teacher. He is very self-absorbed and doesn't really answer your questions. I've never worked so hard for an A in my life. Don't take him unless you want to write all day and night, only to have your work criticized ridiculously. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I don't know what the hell the rest of the people are talking about. This is a great teacher with a great attitude! Maybe he's just relaxed in the film class. He likes you to analyze things and say your analysis clearly (simple terms). Take the class for an easy A.
You're either in or you're out. It's a grad student thing. If you think that he's fair and easy and unbiased, you probably got an A with minimal work and maximum leniency.
The guy has favorites. Lotta students were p***ed off about it too.
Don't even consider it.
Bland personality. His class is a good opportunity to study the politics of grading.
This was an awful class. The teacher is condescending and mean. He asks a lot of his students. I made an A, but I would advise you to run the other way!
Dr. Jackson is helpful and wants you to learn. He is funny and challenging but students who don't want to work may not like his classes. I thought I would be hopeless with Critical Theory but he really inspired an interest in me. Once again it's all about effort. Bad ratings usually = a student who provided minimal effort and then got ticked.
The guy is not even handed in the grading at all. It's unthinkable that another student could form an opinion of the efforts of others. The previous response is an example of how those on the A list become anti-student in order to curry favor with the grad faculty. It's sad, but that's how the Eng. grad program works. Bye.See you at NC State.
The guy sucks. Literally, one of the worst, not hardest, worst graders, I've ever experienced. After receiving B's in both writing classes prior to this one, the clown failed my first paper. Unorganized, bad grader, bad teacher, stay away.
Jackson thinks his class is the only one you take. He gives so much work that I have to choose between doing his work, or all my other classes. I have never had a professor assign so much work. If you like making good grades, do not take this class.
I didn't like him at first because he is a tough grader. But I learned a lot from his class and became a better writer. If you work hard you can get a good grade. Just don't expect this class to be easy. He is really nice I just think people get the wrong impression because he expects a lot from you.
I don't know what classes all you other people are taking but his film class was a breeze. You have to watch movies for the homework assignments! You also have to memorize some definitions, but that's about it. Watch the movies, and memorize the definitions he gives you in class and you got an A. That's all there is to it.
Dr. Jackson is a philosophical genius. He did his best to present very complicated material to us and used awesome examples that took my thinking and writing to a different level. Undergrads may not be ready for him because they want everything handed to them on a platter. He is brilliant and one of the best at UNCC...
Philosophical genius? Huh? The guy misses a lot in the material and seems to be easily pushed into opinions and positions by certain people as if he is afraid to contradict them, while others can't get him to agree, even when one's premise is supported by the text. If you surpass his ability and knowledge, you'll be shot down.Bad Grader. AVOID.
Not the brightest professor. Agreed that he has no backbone when it comes to opinions. He's more concerned about concensus than free thinking. Got a problem about meeting deadline? Talk to Dr. Tony and your grade will be higher than those who really think and work. The slackers' prof.
His film class is great. It's easy and he makes it fun. The only homework is to watch the movie and know the plot, and the only grades you have are tests. He's a funny guy. Take his class!
Really good teacher, its actually an interesting class, it makes you at at movies in a different way, but its really easy all you do is watch movies and have tests on em o and you have to remember some definitions tht are pretty easy, but thts it.
Professor Jackson is a really hard grader. We started with 30 kids in the class, and the number dropped to like 15 after he passed back the first paper. But, if you work hard it will be well worth it. He's really nice, and very helpful to improve your writing
Tony Jackson was indeed a tough grader. At the same time, though, his criticisms were always well-founded and not just made up on a whim. I learned a lot from his class, and in the long-run it's probably better for me that he was so critical.
His film class can get a little bit annoying with all the rewinding and forwarding. He likes to go into detail about everything. I would recommend participating. He makes you remember terms and has 3-4 test. Watch the films and be able to interpret them. Easy class just have to think outside the box.
oh my goodness! dr jackson's class nearly killed me and my other classmates when we took it. You have portfolio prompts of at least 2 pages over the material you read every class and several massive papers.I realize what he said about "you will take everything you learn in my class and it will stick with you" is true. TAKE THIS CLASS it will be wor
He's an extremely hard grader but he's fair and consistent. Every English class you take after 2100 will be easier by comparison.
Tony Jackson is the perfect teacher. Down to earth, honest and brilliant. You'll never feel like you're being patronized. If you are an English major and don't get something out of Jackson's class, you seriously need to reconsider your major.
Mr. Jackson was an extremely helpful teacher if your passion is English. If you are looking to fill a credit for a General Ed class, do not take this class. It helped me learn and grow a LOT as a writer and I am so glad I took it. Mr. Jackson puts a lot of time and effort into grading papers and leaves many detailed amazing insights.
watch the films before class and then go to class and pay attention to everything he says, you will see it on the test. you do these and you get an A.
He is one of the best professors I've had so for in college. he really pushes you to look further and to succeed. He is also one of the few professors who really cares what the student has to say, he will make an effort to get to know you and to adapt his class to help all of the students learn
He is a really cool person however his class is VERY boring. You sit there and watch a 15 second clip of a movie 20 times and he asks you what happened but then says its not fair to ask but asks again. Very confusing. The tests are HARD all answer choices are true for the movie but he goes by which clip you watch in class.
Interesting and friendly professor that is passionate about what he teaches. This class can get a bit boring because all you do is watch film clips, but it is also an easy A as long as you take notes and go to every class and watch the movies.
I would overall recommend this class. He knows what he is talking about and gives you every bit of information you need to do do well. I got the feeling that he was passionate about film and it showed, which is great. This class can be kind of boring though, but an easy A for sure if you put in the required effort.
If you like analyzing and learning about storytelling, you'll enjoy this class. The class is pretty laid back, and his lectures aren't difficult to sit through. Plus, you'll spend many class periods watching movies.
Great professor. Attendance is not required but you have to go to get his lecture notes and to watch the movies with his commentary. His tests are based solely off of in class material, there is no textbook. And don't just watch them online, he makes critical comments in class. If you go and pay somewhat attention it'll be an easy A.
If you're looking for an easy LBST & don't mind doing a little amount of work, this is for you. Although the movies don't get interesting til mid semester, all you do it watch a movie & write a blog post on it for the last half of the semester. You do have to pay attention in class b/c he literally takes what he says and makes them test questions.
Easy class for anyone needing to fill their LBST requirement. Movies are very watchable & well-known, has clicker quizzes after each that should be easy to those who watched them. The later movies require a small writing component, but are easily graded on a pass/fail system. Tests are mostly based on lectures, so going to class is recommended.
Funny guy, enjoyed the class. Basically watch the movies, write the papers, and pay attention and you have yourself an extremely easy A.
One of my favorite professors to date. There's not a ton of work, but you will have to watch a movie or two a week and write a few short-ish (max 2-3 pages) papers over the course of the semester, but nothing tough. As long as you actually think about the movie you're watching deeper than the average viewer, you're guaranteed at least a B.
Great professor. There are only 3 tests, which are very easy if you watch the movies and attend class everyday. You have to watch a movie almost every week, and will have a few writing assignments through the semester, but they are short and not graded harshly. There were clicker quizzes after every movie, they were also very easy.
Clickers quizzes every class. One or two movies a week plus writing assignments for the movies and prospect for success papers. All graded by TA- hope yours doesn't suck. Great movies and great lectures, tests are hard thought if you don't listen to what he says in class.
Lots of homework, very intense. I took intro to film as an LBST elective and he grades me as if I am a film director. He gives good feedback though. Don't expect it to a breeze, must work for it.
this guy is AWFUL. two film assignments a week, gets very repetitive, never happy no matter how much you develop your ideas, deadline is 11am tues & fri but it's counted late if you turn it in right at 11. constantly comments "did you even read the prompt" or other things to belittle you. takes forever to reply to emails or comments.
Mislabeled his course as "Film Criticism" when it's truly "Analyzing Film." We didn't criticize anything. The whole course was centered around breaking down each film component within the assignment movies. Assigns too much of a workload for an online class; as if you don't have other courses that you have work for. Don't take unless you have to
Boy was this class hard. Idk if it's because it was online or what, but phew. So happy it's over. I felt like this class had so much work, you turn in a paper each week, but it's so hard to get an A or B on it. He does kinda expect you to be a film expert even if this is your first film class. He also can be kind of rude sometimes.
This class is hard if you are new to film. The professor seems determined to make you struggle to protest the idea that online classes are easy. You have 2 assginments due a week at 11AM not PM and they are based on a textbook. He wants you to teach yourself and then grades harshly. Each week build on to the next. He is also rude with feedback
This class is one of the most difficult and time consuming courses I've ever taken. You write two 6 page papers a week and are required to watch a movie every week, often twice to do the assignments correctly. This should be counted as a writing intensive course. Jackson gives good feedback but is an extremely tough grader. I hated this class.
Took the online film criticism class last semester and I now have a W on my transcript for this class. I am an English major with a film minor, and from the grades I received, you would not be able to tell! My grade fluctuated with every assignment I did. He grades too harshly and its too much work for an online class. Will never take him again.
Awful. No matter how hard you try or how much to stick to the prompt and textbook, you get bad grades. Doesn't give a clear idea of what he wants! And doesn't give good feedback to help you improve. I honestly don't know how you can get a good grade in this class.
Hes HORRIBLE. All the work you do is never enough. He always says that youre not sticking to the prompt when Im reality he just does a horrible job at explaining what exactly he wants. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I promise you will be DISAPPOINTED. Worse teacher I have ever taken.
I took film criticism with this professor and it was hard, but worth it. Professor Jackson knows what he is teaching andis constantly available via email for help. To get an A u have to work hard and do EXACTLY what he says, also u write ALOT of papers He makes you work for your grade but at the end you know more than ever before. U get what u give.
We had to watch 1 movie a week, then analyze scenes in detail 2x a week. The prof expected us to watch it 2x. (!!!) He's out of touch w/ students' lack of time; I was taking 6 classes. My reports were 3-4 pages long, & grades were random: As, then a B, then A, then a C. He is not at ALL clear about what he wants & grades you harshly.
I'm open to feedback and constructive criticism, but this is not what he does. The comments and class emails have been very rude. This is an intro level film class and the first one I've taken, his responses have been at best, unhelpful, and at worst insulting. Rarely an in between.
Professor Jackson seems to almost randomly assign grades based on his many moods. Some weeks quality papers will be D's and sometimes 88's. His only comments he has given are, "Doesn't stick closely to the prompt". Oh and he also never gives a clear prompt. I am very excited for pass/fail this semester, because he definitely enjoys handing out C's.
This is the worse professor I have ever had. There are no rubrics for his assignments and he grades extremely randomly seemingly based on his mood. He is constantly rude with his individual comments and class announcements. He constantly points out that his online class will not be easy and seems determined to make it as difficult as possible.
Okay I literally had to drop this class because he graded every assignment with a microscope!!! He also gave me so much attitude on all of my assignments in the comments. This class is 100% online; he doesn't even provide lectures, and expects us to teach ourselves. I hated this more than anything. It's an LBST for christ's sake.
If you absolutely have a passion for film and are up to the challenge, take this class. If you are looking for an easy LBST to fulfill your requirements, run as far away as you can. 2 essays a week, due at 11am, generally around 2 pages single spaced. If you put effort you'll learn a lot about film. If not, you'll feel like you are wasting time
If you are going to take an LBST film class the last person you want it to be with is him. He provides no rubric so grades will not make sense and you will not know how to fix it. He provides no help and is very short with his e-mails. Be prepared to take a load of work at a highly fast pace. You read a textbook and teach yourself.
Honestly, if you just use all the vocab in your papers and write as much as you can, you'll be fine. I wrote about 2-3 page single space in the first half of the semester and worked into about 4-6 pages. He doesn't give a guideline which makes it difficult to know what he wants. Can be easy if you have experience in analyzing lit or film.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had! Theres two papers you need to submit at 11 IN THE MORNING on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Hes a very harsh grader and does not give effective feedback. Although I learned a lot from this course, I would not take this class with this professor.
This professor is actually horrible, UNC Charlotte should be ashamed. I've reached out for help and get snarky, short replies. Please, don't take this class. This man enjoys seeing people struggle. I can't wait to get out of it.
For the online asynch class, the topics studied were interesting but he grades as if it is an advanced film class. He expects you to use every film term correctly every time. Class is writing heavy which was fun for me, but his expectations are a little high for an intro film class. If you are not super interested in film I wouldnt take this class
He gives no modules, PowerPoints, readings, or anything. All he says is to buy the textbook. The assignments are rigorous for an intro class and grades harshly. Doesnt not give any tips or examples before the assignment due date which is also at 11 am. He only provides examples after assignments have been graded.
Tony Jackson clearly cares a lot about film and I am sure he is a knowledgeable person but he does not run his classes well. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS ONLINE! As far as I understand his in person class involves discussions but his online class is two multi page papers every week with unclear instructions and he does not teach you at all.
The lectures and his clear knowledge of filmmaking were great, but the expectations were unrealistic. Each week, you would watch a film and essentially write a multiple-page essay on a specific characteristic or scene and apply terms learned to describe them. It was work overload, only take if you are a film major and do not mind writing a lot.
UNC should be ashamed for continuing to let HORRIBLE professors like him teach. He grades based on his opinion vs if you did the assignment right. Told me I "wasn't doing enough for prompt" when I asked for feedback he had none to give. Had issues opening a document and when I wrote him his response was, "I'm not sure, you'll have to ask IT" Be fr
All assignments lacked clear feedback and did not have a grading rubric accessible, assignments were not clear and often confusing. He expects you to write like you are a film major when the class is an entry level fun studies class.
This class is the absolute worst. Don't take it just for the credits! To sum this up: - Grading is HARSH, No rubric, confusing instructions, - lack of good feedback at all, all on his opinion - 11 AM submission, Intense writing. This class is meant to give you stress than teach, if you're pass the withdrawal date, Good luck.
For my review, go read the other one stars. I will say, he was nice to me over email, but the class was horrid. He was also very snarky in the comments with me and I hated that. He also didn't tell us what to look for, but he did say "everything is shot the way it is for a reason" and that's it. If you have to take this class w/ him, DON'T...
This class not only drained me to the point where I skipped several assignments, but it also killed my GPA. He makes you watch 2 hour movies then do assignments where you have to explain every single appearance of a certain thing in a movie. If you didn't get the movie, or "didn't stay true to the facts" you're failing. He is also rude in comments.
This professor was always available through email with it being an online course. If you just take this class and don't ask for help when you don't do well, you won't learn. You have to want to do better or you won't grow in this course. For an online course, this professor gives a lot of help and does it well.
This professor was good about answering questions and comments in a timely manner, especially for an online class. I truly learned a lot from this course and would 100% take this professor again. You just need to be prepared for a lot of writing and have good time management because all the assignments are due at 11am.
Worst class ever. You must purchase a movie and write two papers weekly, with no clear rubric. The assignments are due at 11am so beware if you work or struggle with time management. He is an incredibly harsh grader, and the comments he leaves are snarky and unproductive. This is not an enjoyable or easy film class, though he states that himself.
You have a textbook that you will only use for the first few assignments. After that, you are expected to teach yourself completely. He quite literally grades writing assignments as if you are Quentin Tarantino himself, instead of a college student who is taking an ENTRY LEVEL film class with absolutely no knowledge of film. Never again. DON'T TAKE
