reuses class notes and sample tests, so there are lots of study/practice resources available
pretty fun to know. but physics is not my area
Great lecture style - interesting, energetic. However, fairly demanding prof - not unreasonable, though.

He is such a nice guy and his lectures are very interesting. The class is a joke and an easy A
Hard MTs, otherwise, that's a fun course! no need to go lectures, just d/l all the notes from web. You can go after u take the attendence in tut. Fun course if no exams!
Tony is an amazing teacher...extremely helpful and enthusiastic. His tests are a bit hard for those not majoring in Kin, though. The exercising is majorly fun and Tony is a great guy!
Awsome teacher
great prof. very interesting and very helpful. exams are harder than what you'd expect but overall it is a fun course.
excellent
He is an awesome lecturer. His note's isn't exactly the best studying material but if you read the book, you should have absolutely no problem. I love that he knows his stuff. He would tell you if you make stupid mistakes that it is really stupid.
organized, funny , fair, nice and friendly
The best prof so far after 5 semesters at SFU.
Very enthusiastic and friendly. Good excuse to start exercising!
Worst notes ever encountered
Loved it. Interesting guy to talk to as well.
very amusing and knows his stuff. Notes are a bit blank and piecey but you can make them good if you pay attention to lecture and fill them out yourself. Its a good course and he rewards the hard workers. He hates slackers.
His notes do suck but his easy easy exams make up for his sh*tty notes. He rambles on too during lectures and rambles on afterwards too. But all in all i think he's a good guy. Besides, nobody else teaches this one.
Kin 201 is relatively easy if you have a strong physics background. 143 is easy if you are a kin major (especially if you've already taken 142). He reuses some test questions for 201 so find someone who has taken the course and study their midterms. It helps to take these classes at the same time as there is some overlap.

He's a nice guy who is really into what he teaches which is cool. Don't take the class if you don't like running. His notes are interesting but if you go over the website info he gives you will do good on the tests. The class was good and not that hard considering I have never taken and KIN classes before.
If you're taking distance and it says that your prof is Tony Leyland, it's not. You get some tutor-marker that marks all of your stuff. Tony should be more involved in his distance ed classes because I can tell you that kin143 dist ed. sucks. Oh and the study guide, great way for the prof to say this is what I believe in so study my beliefs!
Not good at explaining things. Too loud. Hard to pick up important messages from his lecture. Very picky marker. Reuse past midterm questions. Ignorant. Does NOT consider much about what a student says. Made me feel like only he is right. The material is easy but he makes it hard.
Good prof. Lectures were interesting and informative. Would take another class with him.
Easy exams, but lectures are full of flawed arguments. Maybe because it is a first year course, but he really over simplifies things. Doesn't consider all the variables, only one and then draws conclusions based on that.
Overly simplify everything. Boring lectures and the lectures r not so related to the exams. The class itself is boring and the over use of textbook for exams make it even worse. No comment for the easiness of the exams cuz it depends. Overwhelming amount of memorizing.
Tony was entertaining. I had to take this course for science breadth. Easy A. TA was horrible; mumbled her way through every tutorial. otherwise, good quality professor.
Nice guy and loves what he teaches. Lectures can be quite dull. Only way to do good on the midterm and final is to read read read read read read read his lecture notes online. They're a drag though if kin does not interest you. Other than that, it's cool that the class has a lab and you're bound to end up with a decent mark if you read the notes
Great class but the midterm and final are hard. Lots of tricky multiple choice on both tests. Keep up with reading the weekly online lecture notes. The powerpoint online lecture notes are important also. Go to the labs as they are a great excuse to exercise. Enjoy getting in better shape!!
Instead of using textbook, we had his online lecture essays which was quite lengthy and was essentially his lectures in more detail. Lecture notes were at times very simplistic. Otherwise, very knowledgeable prof and would recommend.
The course was adequatlely taught... textbook didn't help much... midterms and final exam was fair.
Very helpful. Enjoy his humour.
Midterm and Final can be tricky at times, course content is quite simple. Otherwise, I would recommend this course
Taught new material a day before the final exam. Notes suck, they consist of charts and graphs with no legend. Lots of practice questions that he'll never go over. Nice guy but bad prof
rushed through the last few sections way too fast (as in the last two weeks!). these sections made up >80% of the final!!
I'll admit if you're looking over his notes and haven't written anything on them in lecture you'll be in trouble. However, his exams are predictable and if you're good at physics they're really easy. Great sense of humour, always has me laughing and genuinely a nice person, easy to approach if you've done some work on your part.
I please advise you NOT to take this in his distance education section. Tony is NOT the one marking your assignments. The exams will be difficult even if you studied his notes. It is alot of information. You will do well if you work your butt off, but the average on the exams are in the 50% range for dist. education.
Excellent prof. If you are a Kin student, there is no way you can't get over a B in this class, the material is quite simple and there is a lot of overlap from Kin 142 and Kin 110. The labs consist of runs and are graded on participation, not performance. The exams are quite simple and are based on his lecture notes.
Took this course distance. The course book he wrote is very light reading, enjoyable even! The class is most useful I've ever taken, simple stuff too. Easy GPA boost and a great class to take for your own personal benefit. Clear expectations!
Tony is a very enthusiastic prof and extremely athletic. He's a good runner and he loves what he does. I would suggest actually taking the class (rather than taking it by distance) because the tutorials are a great way to learn new types of exercises.
What can i say? The study guide questions were helpful, a bit! The exams are really tricky, and hard. His study guide was easy read, but I find it rather useless, because it doesn't have anything to do with the exam! I thought this was an easy course, but I guess I was wrong! You can just sit and relax if you just want a D!
This class is useless. Honestly, I went to the lectures and got absolutely nothing out of it. His lecture notes are terrible and useless if you go and look back at them. Most of the lecture he goes off on a tangent not related to the course. I really don't even know how to study for the course as the textbook and lecture notes don't really help.
he is so useless! he goes off topic way too much! even if you are 0.2% away from a letter grade, he will not bump you up! he is somewhat helpful during office hours but he makes you feel stupid if you ask him a question
Seems like a pretty good guy. Notes aren't very valuble (too many useless slides). Assignments can be rough if you're doing them by yourself. Tests aren't too bad. If you did well in physics, you will be fine.
DO NOT DO THIS COURSE VIA DISTANCE ED. I found it very frustrating that Tony would expect non-kin majors to understand concepts/definitions without properly explaining them in the course reader. You have to work hard if you want a good grade. Exams can be quite tricky. Too much work required for a first year course. Glad it's over with, I hated it
Took this class Distance Education and ended with a B with very minimal effort. I would recommend this class to everyone, since it's valuable knowledge to apply to your life, not just for your academic career. Read the textbook and you should be good.
VERY HARD EXAM! do not take it if you don't have the pre-req, he expects you to know them already. (even if you are not in kin major)
HARD!!
Not very good at explaining concepts. He just assumes you know it and goes over the slides quickly. Not very helpful either. You really need to study hard to get a good mark with this professor. I would advise to avoid him
Course is tough for non-Kin majors like myself. Lecture was mandatory (iclicker quizzes) and the material was quite boring to listen to. Must know textbook instead and out. Exams were tricky. I much rather have taken an EASC class for my science credit.
Very nice guy and very fair exams. However, since the lecture slides don't make much sense you need to follow and write down everything he says in class to be able to understand the graphs and diagrams.Tutorials are very helpful.
The course was very useful, just a bit dry. If you did well in Physics 101, you'll do fine in this course. Just know your anatomy. And attend lectures. his slides are not enough. You need to take some of your own notes to supplement them.
Great prof, always willing to help students out. Study his notes and you'll do great
took this course online and it was just horrible. the online textbook that you have to buy is just useless. doesnt help at all. just makes concepts even more difficult to understand. AVOID!
Lecture slides are not helpful on their own. Felt like Tony taught topics in a disorganized manner. I personally found it difficult because of this. Maybe he could have organized the topics, have a lecture on a topic (ie. bone properties, torque), then do examples like a Physics class sort of structure.
took this course online, made my own STACK of notes, turned out his exam are on stuff ( memorize how energy system works and etc, but all he test is on specific muscle during specific exercise)that i didnt think were important..i would recommend taking this course at his class and not online.
Very interesting class, definitely the one I learned the most in. If you are an athlete you should take this class no matter what. Midterm is a bit difficult, but the final and term paper are very fair. Go to class because there are clicker questions everyday, worth 9% of mark
I totally regret taking this class online. His textbook is lengthy paragraphs upon paragraphs of theories and definitions embedded into personal testimonies and beliefs. There is so much to learn and the information is not supplemented enough for an online course to fully understand what he is explaining.Simply overwhelming for an online course
Horrible professor. His "online text" was not wrote professionally. It contained a lot of person opinion and spelling mistakes. The weight of some assignments were proportionate. Would not recommend!
Tony went through the chapters WAY TOO FAST. There were so many points to be discussed. I understand its my responsibility but theres about 20 long butt chapters to memorize already, if he could just stick to his points and explain with clarity that would help me pass this course. I doubt I will be. Hes a nice guy though
Nice guy, but tough class. Would not recommend as the amount of material and weight of assignments are not right. Hard exams as well. And my level of enthusiasm was high before I took this class. lol I think his T.A. was horrible and not engaging at all.
Tony Leyland is a horrible, horrible professor. His online textbook for BPK 143 is full of rants and opinions! It's like his personal journal. Do not recommend this class
class is a joke. If you have any basic physics knowledge its an easy A+. Exams can be hard if you dont understand the concept of physics though so becareful!
Super nice guy, enjoyed the class. He is one of the few profs who attempts to make class fun and engaging
Took this class as a non kin major and throughly enjoyed it (even though I didn't get an A). Obviously very passionate about what he teaches and is incredibly helpful and allows himself to have open availability. His language and teaching skills are good, esspecialy compared to alot of other lectures at SFU. Would recommend.
Took BPK 143 online with him. He wrote the textbook himself and the entire thing is just him droning on and on about how crossfit is god's gift to mankind. Terribly written and what factual content there is, is written as dull and boring as can be.
This has been my favorite class at SFU so far! I highly recommend taking it if you are regularly active, (or a gym junkie!) theres a lot of useful information that applies to everyday life! As long as you read the textbook, do the study questions ..you will do more than fine on the midterm & final! LOVED this course!
Second class with Tony, same outcome. Provides a great baseline for the class all semester and then slams everyone with an outrageous final. Put in countless hours studying, but he chose to put the most difficult study questions on the final. Work hard on the assignmentsfitness tests to pump your mark up. Standard online kin class, all the same.
Hes a really good lecturer, funny guy, knows the material and delivers it clearly. Lecture slides on his website were very helpful. 1 paper, 1 midterm, 1 final, I clicker marks and lab attendance. The textbook was written by him, very long and boring, full of opinions and how "cross fit" is amazing. Would recommend despite the textbook
Tony is an extremely nice guy who is passionate about what he teaches. This passion can sometimes translate to strong opinions. Be prepared to participate if you want to succeed in this course.
Tony's lectures were often disorganized. He was also very confusing as he would take topics all over the place. Be ready to read a very long boring textbook written by himself. He provides so much opinion that it often leaves you confused to what the real facts are.
Great Prof! Explains the concepts well and super clear in the lectures. Don't need to cram much for the exams. overall class was pretty easy and fun
Lectures were engaging and covered almost all of the information in the textbook clearly. Tony made both the lectures and labs interesting and concepts are simple as long as you understand the basics of major muscle groups and exercises.
If taking this class online it is a lot harder than taking it in a lecture because the textbook rambles on. For tests, when taking the class online, it is expected that you know every detail about everything whereas in the class he lays out what will most likely be on the test.
Absolutely atrocious individual. Cannot write for his life, yet makes you buy his $100 textbook, wherein he rambles about his own (wrong) opinions and how amazing and right he is in every single way. You'll think you understand, and then take the midterm and want to drop out. Assignments are fine, there are a lot that aren't worth much overall.
You had to buy a textbook that was written by himself. The textbook was also just full of his opinions and judgements of the youth of today. I took this class online and he still managed to make me angry and hate him...
Tony is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. If you interested in exercise and training, studying will be enjoyable. I did not find midterm/final to be difficult, everything asked can be found in the textbook (which is also nicely written), just make sure you go through the study questions. Enjoyed every lecture and tutorial
Most people seem to give Leyland a bad rap, however I found him a great prof. Lectures were interesting and he kept the class engaged. There is a lot of content to know in the course so you can't slack, but I found his exams fair.
Absolutely loved this class. Tony's super motivating and a genuinely nice person. The labs were my favourite part, definitely got us moving! There's quite a bit of material in the course, but overall, it's relatively easy to understand. 10/10 would take a class with him again.
Tony a great guy who cares about his students. Learning BPK 143 with him but be ready for burpees and running in his labs. Overall solid guy!
Totally unreasonable for an introductory level course. 500 pages of text to memorize for the final. He wrote the textbook and it might as well just be 500 pages of garbage.
Way too much detail and way too much to know for an intro level course. Textbook is not helpful in identifying terms, so you actually have to read every sentence practically. Midterm covers 12 chapters with extensive detail. Assignments hardly count, it's all the exams. Tony was absent from providing any help, and TA was bad too. good luck
The textbook written by Tony is material based on his option and he just goes on rants about the material. He's not accessible for help at all. the TA's do not give good feedback on the marking.
The textbook written by Tony is material based on his opinion and he just goes on rants about the material. He's not accessible for help at all. The TA's do not give good feedback on the marking.
Tony is one of the better profs in the department, highly recomended
No bs, what you learn is practical and he makes an effort to get to know you. Outlines exactly what he expects of you and how he wants it, you're getting at least a B+ if you even somewhat care about the content of this course with Tony.
I took the class online and barely passed the course. Way too extensive with detail and complexity, and with way too much reading. The textbook material isn't defined by words/definition. It was lengthy/run-on sentences of the overall process of how cells and biology works. I was stuck on two pages for 5 hours. So good luck!
His class is very fun. He is an easy prof and his midterm and final are very fair. The paper is also very fun to do and family graded. really recommend him for BPK 143.
what a gem
Exams were straightforward and questions were taken directly from tutorials or his slides. Super easy. Tony is hilarious too, and is available for help outside of class so if you're struggling I recommend you email him or see him in office hours.
kind of difficult concepts to grasp, i was confused for a lot of the semester but i studied hard for the final got a B- hes really caring, go to office hours, the term paper is a easy mark booster so is lab attendance, and iclicker. just study 3-4 hours every week outside of class and your good to go.
I clickers for marks, midterms and finals are fair if you study all the practice questions he gives u (some are way harder than what he actually tests u on) and main theory concepts discussed in class. Mt1 is calculation heavy, mt2 is theory heavy, fin (cummulative) is combo of both. Assignments can be difficult but just ask the TA for help!!
Not understanding/empathetic of his students personal situations. Does not care about students. Not a fair marker. Not a good listener. Overall terrible and unprofessional professor. Would not recommend.
Tony is really passionate about what hes doing, and he has office hours and is willing to answer questions. Although the lectures can get boring at times he tries to make it engaging through iclicker quizzes. He has a couple assignments worth a lot that are really easy to get 100% on. The midterm and final was fair, and the textbook is a must!!!
Way too much info for a first year class, exams were on specific details of textbook (like memorizing graphs), barely tested main ideas. If you are just trying to get by, don't even read textbook and just focus on study questions (answers on quizlet) also my TA Javier was the worst I have ever had and I am in my final semester of year 4.
The textbook written by him is ridiculously long for the information he is trying to convey and mostly based on opinion. Some studies are cited but with many, he concludes that there is insufficient information to know the truth. For a 100 level course, it is hard to follow along and Im in my fourth year. I would recommend him to use less opinion.
Tony is not only a prof to me but has been a mentor for my degree. He is passionate about what he teaches and if you pay attention and work hard you will succeed in his classes.
Tony is a bit all over the place, but I really enjoyed having him as a prof! He's funny, makes things interesting, and obviously loves what he teaches. Attendance is a must due to iclicker. Biomechanics is my favourite course I've taken to date!
Sucks. He was not there at all to help us theorugh anything. the TA only gave announcements and barely helped. really wish I didnt take this class. Dont take this is you dont have to
