it would be nice if you could avoid him, but he is the gateway to the biological sciences at UR - and he knows it. it is extremely difficult to learn from him. anything you DO learn will likely be a result of your own personal investigation elsewhere. regardless of what you understand about the concepts, unless you learn to see how he sees and talk like he talks, you will not have opportunity to demonstrate what you know on an exam. success in biology does not equal success in his class and vice versa.

Boy, a lotta hate for Dr. Olek here. I understand the feeling. But he's a good guy with a good way of thinking about how he teaches, even if the execution is completely sloppy. If you can get past the misspellings, incorrect information, and total disorganization, you'll learn a great way of thinking about how to practice science.

Attempts to introduce vocabulary that differs from the traditionally accepted lexicon - sometimes helpful but other times completely unnecessary; learning the words he wants you to use often detracts from the material he expects you to understand. Is unclear in lecture, materials are different from what he tests on more often than not. useless.

I read all these comments before taking the class and I was scared. But he's not bad at all if you take time to study/organize the lecture ppts on your own time. Don't bother going to class. Be prepared for workshops. MEMORIZE his slides. and get to every question on the test cause something is better than nothing. I did fine in the end. :)

After reading reviews here I was scared to take the class but he really isn't bad. His unconventional method of teaching (focus on application rather than just memorization) gets a lot of people upset because it isn't so straightforward but if you take the time to understand his approach you will do fine. He is actually a really smart guy.

Olek teaches material visually and then expects you to be able to apply it experimentally, in words and numbers, on the tests. If you study, go to class, and go to work shops, you will sit on top of the curve an get in the A range. If you spend all of your time whining about how the course is unfair and too hard, you won't. Go to class! Seriously.

Olek has an interesting style of teaching. He moves through slides quite rapidly and doesn't always explain when he starts to use an abbreviation or words interchangeably. The class is a lot easier if you took AP Chem or Bio, or at least honors classes in high school. He does care about students, he just doesn't always understand their questions.

UGH! Hard to explain. He only uses presentations. EXAMS ARE NOT MEMORIZATION! Only a small section is. Exams are mostly about applying an experimental outlook to a concept. IS NOT A NORMAL BIO CLASS. Class is called "Principles of Biology", and is mostly a microbiology course. I will NOT take another course from him if I can avoid it.

Class is really easy... he presents the lecture material in a very confusing and non intuitive way. I stopped going to lecture and still get A's on exams. Would not take another class with him. Ever.

Everyone complains about Olek at the beginning of the semester and he can be somewhat confusing but once you get used to his style it's much easier. To be successful make sure you know the information perfectly so that you can apply it to experimental situations. Doing well in this class is possible but it takes work and patience! GO TO WORKSHOP.

This class takes work, and Olek is not what most people are used to, but if you have an open mind, he'll teach you to think for yourself and you'll learn a lot. He also assures students that the curve will have an average of B/B+ which is very generous, so he clearly wants his students to do well in the end.

Very knowledgable and puts A LOT of work into his slides. But you do have to work hard to get a good grade. He curves at end which is nice.

Olek is a professor that not many freshman are expecting. He doesn't just make you regurgitate information, but instead he wants his students to learn how to think critically. His powerpoints are great, and he puts them online. There's a very generous curve at the end of the class. Definitely my favorite class so far.

Dr. Olek is an interesting professor. The main key to succeeding in his class is to think conceptually and in a "creative" fashion. I really like how he taught us to think critically. You will have to put in effort in this class. I went to class, actively participate in workshop, and went up to him to ask questions and managed to pull off an A.

Olek was my favorite professor thus far. He had a unique and genuine style of teaching. He was perfect. He answered questions in a very clear manner. His mustache was jaw-dropping. Overall it will be very difficult to find another professor like Olek. He was perfect.

Tony Olek is the man. He is different, but you appreciate him more as the semester goes on. Very generous curve at end of course as well. So if your getting B's, dont be bummed bc you'll probably get an A.

One of the most ridiculous professors I've ever had. He answers questions like a politician. Rather than getting the point he dances around the question, giving some roundabout response, then asks, "Ok?" The tests are actually straightforward - get the old exams from your TA and you should be fine, but it's a shame. This class could be better.

Olek tended to jump between topics in his attempt to teach. Thank god he posted his LECTURES in FULL on Blackboard! He has some crazy theories about nutrition which probably explains his body shape. We NEVER used the textbook because he didn't like it. Don't be too discouraged if you don't do well, many change majors after this, but it gets easier.

Would take again

Professor Olek was very knowledgeable about the subject and also about other related subjects. H e frequently pointed out relationships between subjects that are at first not obvious but are in fact very illuminating. He cares deeply about the material. He is humorous but in a pretty understated way.
