smart as hell- a wee bit out of focus but i dont mind- gotta love what this guy has to say.
crazy as hell, but a fun time.
Tony was awesome! He really cares about his students. You know a professor cares when he gives you his home number, and doesnt get mad when you call it. Great class.. Funny guy.. good stories
Tony is a very neat guy to talk to because he is incredibly well rounded and doesn't talk down to you. He seems to have done every kind of job there could be from talking to him. He's what I would call the last real Renaissance man.
Tony was a great teacher. His class was very easy going and interesting.
He's a cool guy. Kept me interested in class.
Awasome! Completely Awasome! I loved him and his stories that he told. He's crazy and a Sci-fi freak (which I can relate to). His stories are not just for fun though, so listen to them closely! Overall Great to take for 1st year student!!
easy class but he is very opinionated and goes off on a tangent alot. terrible person but good professor.
He always relates stories to what he teaches on a given day. He's so smart, I swear the man knows everything, it's eerie!
Tony is the****. I went to class just because I wanted to hear his stories. The man Has some very interesting stories to tell and they are funny as hell. He is not difficult either. Just do your work and go to class
One Crazy Hillbilly! Class was awesome. One of the coolest people i have ever met. 4th year student and he's one of the best profs I have had!
Tony G. Spicer really admires himself. He lectures the entire class period on stories of himself. He assigns three papers the entire semester. He's a funny guy, but bored me to tears with his auto-biographical stories.
hes a really funny guy who incorporates his life into class lectures. hes so random, hes so NORMAL!! he really relates to the students. a really nice guy. the class itself was pretty easy. 2 tests- study hard!! 4 easy papers. not bad at all.
Easy Class! Tony is very funny because he is very random!!! 2 tests, 4 papers...read everything he tells you and you will get an A!!! T
Tony is awesome...he is so funny and I actually WANTED to go to his classes. He talks about his life and tells interesting stories that relates to what he is teaching. The class was very easy just as long as you showed up...id take him again in a heartbeat
Great professor. He is funny and nice. He is willing to help. You need to read the assignments otherwise you are screwed on test. He grades papers fairly but his test were scary and hard. If you read and go to class you will be fine. Tony is a great guy who is teaching for all the right reasons.
This guy is teaching an english class and can't even speak proper english in the class. I honesly don't know what everyone else is talking about because he was horrible. And I am a very positive person and can usually deal with anyone....not this guy.
Tony is AWESOME, had him my freshman yr.... and he doesn't teach English... 121 is a COMPOSITION COURSE!!! Anyway, he likes to tell stories and most of the work you do is on your own time.
great teacher and cool person one down to earth guy ask him about the oklahoma city bombing

I think Tony likes to unashamedly toot his own horn and put down the personal beliefs of others. He admits the first day that he doesn't care about what the class thinks of what he says, thus giving himself the go-ahead to bash whatever he feels like. I felt he was trying too hard to be a "cool" instructor and gain freshman fans. With his opinions and biases aside, I think he gives pretty good insight to how to read poetry.
He cracks me up. His stories and tendancy to get off topic are just amusing. He's human, he shows that, it's cool. He does not, however, let that hinder the fact that he is an extremely intelligent guy with tons of interesting information to share with you. I'm really enjoying this class and everything that I'm learning. It's easy, it's interesting and it's fun. I try my very hardest not to miss class because I adore his lecture style and content. I thought this would be a repeat of HS but its not at all.
Tony is an amazing teacher. His stories are absolutely amazing because they always fit in with the lecture. Amazing man i must say, and by the way its a composition calss, not a lit class.
Tony is one of the funniest teachers at this school... Talk to him about Monty Python and his neighbors that are building a spaceship....
THE TEACHER IS CRAZY
An amazing teacher. Helpful, talkative and overall fun. He is a simple lecture style professor, staying away from technology for the most part. HE PLAYS WORLD OF WARCRAFT!? AND WATCHES FAMILY GUY!? The material is fun to learn and Spicer is the icing on the cake. Very understanding and sympathetic professor. Don't let him fool you!
Just take him. You'll find out why. Great guy and a pretty good teacher too. Even if you hate english you can still go for the conversation.
THE MOST BORING CLASS I'VE EVER HAD. Going to class is totally pointless unless you want to hear a bunch of made up stories that have absolutely nothing to do with writing. Boring class, boring teacher, and NOT funny.
this is my only 8:00 am class i have not slept through
I love me some Tony Spicer. I was basically a stubborn overly-opinionated brat in this class and he loved it. I did do work sometimes, but mostly, it seemed he was grading on ability to think for yourself and provide him with a challenge. Being a passive teacher's pet does not work for this class. Be prepared for a lot of sex, drugs & drinking
Spicer is this hilarious paul bunyan look alike from the back woods that loves poetry...its strange but refreshing at the same time! you have to read the poetry! and particpate in class every day in discusions to understand! its easy to pass but it takes some effort to earn an A!
stupendous; you must take poetry with him or a tiny portion of your soul will die. he stabs me in the brain with love & stuff.
One of my favorite professors. hes an easy going guy, kind of gets off topic alot. fun down to earth a little weird but overall a wonderful teacher. took him for two different classes because i like him so much. and recommened to others.
His class was so boring, i just wanted to go back and sleep, he never talks about English it is always about something that happened to him. If you acctually want to learn and saty interested don't take his class. One good thing about his class he only had us write 3 papers!!!
he really loves what he teaches and makes you love it as well
Tony is awesome!...take this class!
We didn't do a whole lot of work but he's the funniest and most interesting professor I've ever had. He's got a great personality. He's a thinker, too. I think people who don't like him are probably just shallow idiots. If you like interesting people, he's great.
He knows his material! This guy is extremely smart and relates that well to his class. Goes off on rants a little bit, but take it in stride. I will definately be taking more of his classes!
Outstanding guy! He keeps things interesting. If you struggle with writing, then this might not be the class for you. If you're looking to learn how to write, go somewhere else. If you want to learn some of life's lessons take this class. Witty, and insightful!
Tony is the man, that's all there is to it...
Tony Tony Tony, I didnt enjoy this poetry class--I feel like this class is pointless.. He doesnt teach a darn thing--I want my money back-easy professor though, just not my world bc accient poetry doesnt excites me..who in the Heck cares!!
Crazy inspiring guy. He loves poetry way more than any healthy human should, but that's what makes the class so frigging awesome. Read the assignments or you won't learn anything. The papers aren't hard. Really makes you re-think your opinions on poetry.
Tony is awesome, honestly he is the best english teacher I have had. He doesn't grade papers, which is a nice approach because in order to get an A you have to take his comments and apply them to your papers. The papers can be very confusing on what you are supposed to do at first, but he will make sure you don't feel unprepared. Awesome class thou
Amazing teacher, funny. I loved going to his class
Tony was awesome, you don't feel like you are learning a thing but his crazy stories do relate somehow. Class was always fun and I didn't mind waking up at 8 a.m I think I looked at the book once...he'd always say we'll get to stuff and we never did. He's opinionated and you'll either love him or hate him.
The class wasn't easy, but it wasn't set up for you to fail you just had to actually read the poetry and do the work. It's a crazy concept I know, but it's a great class to take with Tony. He is an amazing guy, who when you get to know him he is just so lovable.
TONY IS TOO COOL 4 SCHOOL.!! HE'S AWESOME. I never missed a class unless he canceled but I was ALWAYS late. I could have got an A if I wasn't so late all the time. He does take attendance. He doesn't grade papers until the end.Classmates grades papers do you can improve them before he grades them. there are 4 papers a term. FUN TOPICS. TAKE HIM!!!!
All he ever did was talk, and most of the time it was him going off on tangents. His assignments were never anything we discussed or went over in class. Doesn't grade fairly and help very often. He is teaching this 100 level class like its a 300 level class. Don't take this class with him!
Tony is a pretty swell cat. I feel like we more talked about English, and trends in English rather than learn about it. The only time he's truly teaching is when he leaves corrections and suggestions on your paper. I always found the suggestions helpful.
Yes - Tony lives the zen lifestyle. But... shouldn't we all? He is one of the smartest people I have ever known. He will introduce to history up to the poems you read and the history of them themselves. You will then uncover many things from the poem. Don't let the history part freak you out! Live life like Tony does. De-stress yourself and learn.
Tony is awesome. You either love or hate him. All his tangents and stories have a point and relate to the class and the topics he is teaching. He doesn't grade papers until the end of class which gives you time to prepare and redo assignments. Recommend this teacher to anyone.
The portfolio sucks... But Tony is a cool guy. Take a class with him if you are able.
Tony's only hard if you make him hard. Come to class, work is easy. Don't come to class, work is HELL. He explains everything that you will need. And, he's super funny! Yes, he goes off into tangents, but its his class. Anyway, it breaks up the monotony! This class was my favorite for the semester and Tony is one of the BEST! PS: Participate!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! If you have any morals at all don't take him. He's very dirty and rarely speaks of relevant information you need to write the papers that he says can't be wrong if you prove your opinion but then takes points off if you don't agree with him. Made fun of Jesus the first week and everything in poetry is apparently about masturbation
Great Instructor, discussions open your eyes to the whole picture of the world. Not too much homework required, just main papers.
If you want a blow off class. This is it. I learned absolutely nothing, and all Tony talks about is sex. Sure he's a 'cool dude' but he doesn't teach anything or grade anything so you never know your grade, or what you're supposed to be doing. I recommend NOT taking this class, because it's completely useless.
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER. seriously he really only talks about sex. you write six poems, and one story. its the stupidest, most pointless class I have taken and we only sit there and critique each others work while he rants off on sex and crap. He also makes you print copies of everything for everyone. Just a waste of my paper and time.
Tony is a good teacher. He rambles a lot and sometimes goes off into a tangent, but if you listen to him, you will pass with an A. Also, everything he teaches relates to other classes I've taken. He speaks more on history than anything. Overall a good teacher but honestly, I wouldn't take him a second time. He gets an A- from me.
If you actually care about scholarly activities or learning, Tony is the man to take. Every moment with him I felt in the presence of a genius. He is also very passionate about YOUR learning. Which is amazing.
Possibly my favorite professor I have had so far. He really cares about the students and really knew what he was talking about. Brilliant man. He makes the class challenging, but in a good way.
It was easy, I just procrasinated, but he is really funny and rambles about the random things in life but he really does care about our education. I really liked the journal assignment because we got to write about whatever we wanted to.
Went into class not interested in Writing, but through the 4 papers that were required I learned skills that will aid in the rest of my undergrad and graduate research. I recommend just getting the everyday writer book and not the Essay Connection book because you can just read those in the library.
Tony is a very good professor. This class is SUPER easy. Just make sure you turn in every poem and participate in class. 6 poems and 1 short story. No tests or quizzes. Simple!
Too cool for school.
Very interesting guy! Love how he relates literature to everyday life and is very relaxed in class. Also, very accommodating to those who really need it.
The best professor I have ever had. Extremely brilliant, also very funny. His personality makes you want to show up. He actually makes English fun! Who can say that about someone!?
I picked Tony solely on his reviews. I figured anyone who randomly talks about sex is good in my book. The class wasn't difficult. We were supposed to pick up our final portfolio during exam time. He didn't show. lol He can be a scatterbrain but other than that he's a cool dude.
Coolest teacher ever, by far, just sit there and listen to his stories and him swear all day. Extremely easy, dont bother buying the book either. he has random mood swings but you should be ok with that.
Of course in poetry there were a lot of readings but little assignments were actually given. He rambles a lot but it is typically something interesting and relevant to life not just pertaining to class. I got a B+ and I honestly did not pay as much attention as I should have.
Try not to take his class. Very easy grader but his narcissism is the most annoying thing and he talks a lot about him self (highly). He's not a mean guy but sometimes the things he say can be controversial. Very easy class though. Wrote an essay the night before and got a 2020. Just don't expect to learn much.
Tony was an interesting teacher! He likes to talk about his life a lot, which is great because he has a lot of cool stories. Sometimes it got in the way of class though. The way I thought was different after I had him as a teacher! He is not an easy grader but he is fair. You'll get the grade you deserve.
I heard so many good things about him so i took his class. It was a poetry class and not all poetry is black and white. I really needed help understanding and he didnt give it to me
There are 3 papers, all 5-7 pages. Tony gives very interesting topics. Final is a portfolio project. Tony is a very nice guy. He talks a lot about his own life and taught me a lot of life lessons. He was always there if I needed help. If you get offended by swearing and sex talk, don't take this class. Overall, Tony's class was amazing!
Get ready to write! He expects students to participate in critiquing other students work. He was very funny and helpful with making our work better. Clear cut rubrics and expectations; Kinda sucked that the attendance dwindled down to almost nothing during the week, not sure if those students passed the class or not.
Funny as can be. I loved having Tony and hope that I can get another class with him. Take him if you want to be entertained.
A hilarious prof with a terrible mouth! He has funny stories, which often draw him off topic. If you are taking this class to write stories, DON'T take this class. Most of the writing is in the form of poetry.
Tony is everything you need in an English professor. Aside from going over some grammar and paper requirements, he'll tell you inspirational stories from his life that make you want to go straight home and start writing right away. Assigns an intimidating journal at the beginning of the semester. Fill it full of life and dreams and you'll do great.
Always willing to stay to answer your questions. Doesn't really email back very often but is very clear so you won't have much to email about unless it's specific. super funny and always a very enjoyable class.
Tony is awesome, he goes over the poems in depth. However, he drags the class on and on and he takes a while to get to the point.
Tony is very mouthy. He's funny but sometimes he's a bit childish and most of time I would rather he just get straight to the point. He talks a lot, but its mostly funny. If you go to class and put in the effort, he'll grade easy on you. No tests, Only 3-4 assignments and he will adjust to the schedule if need be. Overall a very entertaining class.
If you like reading, then this is your class. If you participate in the class discussions-which is pretty much every class period- then you will find the class more enjoyable. Very easy grader if you show effort. About 4 assignments throughout the semester and they're pretty straight forward. Cool guy and cool class.
Personally, I didn't like the class. Your entire grade is based off a portfolio of 4 essays and 50 handwritten journal entries. I don't feel like I learned anything. He usually just tells us random stories and assigns readings for every class. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who's not already a strong writer. Allows 5(?) absences.
Tony is an amazing writing professor and is an actual writer. He is very unconventional, which makes him even better. Dont take this class if you dont want to read and be engaged. He is very philosophical and sarcastic and bad-a**. If you plan to take this class seriously, make sure to take tony because you will get the most out of it.
GREAT and engaging teacher. He cares about your writing. Be present in class. Laid back and open-minded professor with great input. Hot. This is not a bird course because you have to show that you put in work, but it is not hard to get an A.
I had to take this class as a prerequisite, actually ended up having him for 2 of my classes first semester, and I would do it all over again if I could. I have never liked a teacher so much in my academic career. Such an overall cool guy and is insanely reasonable. As long as you show up and make a conscious effort, you'll get an A no problem.
This guy is probably one of the coolest teachers you'll ever have, i'd have him teach all my classes if I could. As long as you come to class and actually pay attention and make a connection with him, you're golden. Also, it'd be smart of you to make sure you plan out due dates and deadlines for his assignments because they do sneak up on you.
Professor Spicer is a great teacher because he is grounded and versatile. In other words, he is a fine blend of down to earthiness and intellectualism. Most of all, it surprises me that this University grants opportunities towards other teachers , who are competent , but a little pretentious with their teaching styles.
He's doesn't lecture you. He will give you a syllabus along with a website of things to read and may even tell you to buy a few books but he will never use them or go over the readings. The class isn't hard however he doesn't give you grades until after finals. There's 3 essays and that's it.
Tony is a really cool guy. I took him for writing 121. I don't really feel I learned a lot on the mechanics of writing. I do feel like I learned a lot on writing overall. He had us write in journals which I learned to really love. He tends to go on many stories during class time which can be interesting. As a person and a teacher he is really great
This is a pretty easy class to pass. There isn't a final, you get points just for writing whatever in a journal, and you have to write a few papers on some pretty interesting topics. Tony is great once you get to know him but comes across pretty weird at first. There's a lot of assigned reading, but if you just say you read it he won't question it.
Tony is an awesome guy. Got great feedback on everything I turned in during the semester, which was helpful since 50% of the final grade was the portfolio of revised work. He does get off topic a lot, but if you listen, he has a lot of wise words to share. Read the syllabus!!!! And care about what you're writing. He can tell.
Tony was a great professor. I wouldn't recommend taking this class early in the morning. He tends to talk a lot through the workshops but he is nice. He doesn't put grades on canvas but if you show up to class and turn in your assignments you will get a good grade.
Tony is an interesting guy. The lectures seem pretty pointless since he'll usually just tell stories and barely teach about writing, but it's intended to get you thinking about future paper topics. A lot of his stories are pretty entertaining too! He gives very helpful feedback when grading papers and is a pretty casual fellow.
If you're taking creative writing and you don't like writing poetry, don't take his class. Very poetry-heavy. But he is a lot of fun and one of the coolest guys I've ever met. He has a lot of funny stories and gives awesome feedback on your work. He really has helped me become a better writer. I just wish it wasn't so poetry-based.
The writing itself was difficult but Tony was very laid back about things and open to interpretation on the topics. Attendance is recommended but one could get by missing a few classes. You get feedback and tools to improve your writing, and overall, it was a good class. Oh, and if he tells you to keep a journal - do the journal before finals week.
Tony is a really good writing teacher
Tony doesnt use Canvas so its hard to keep a track of your grade but as long as you do everything, you should be fine. Books were less than $20. Tony is hilarious and makes the class worth it. He gives great feedback and apreciates participation. At the end of the semester, you get a chance to revise your work then you submit a final portfolio.
The easiest class and professor by far. Just show up do the assignments and you will pass. You dont get to see your grade until the end of the semester which sucks. You do a bunch of drafts and then turn in a portfolio at the end which is your only grade including participation.
Very understanding and caring professor. Is very helpful and willing to help if you need it. Don't get your grade until the end, but grades fairly. One of the best teachers I ever had.
You dont even realize youre learning. Its the best thing ever. I wish all my classes were with Tony
This class is relatively easy if you show up, participate, and try on the assignments. There are a couple books that you can buy, but we did not really use them. You workshop your poems and story, but it is very helpful when doing the portfolio at the end of the semester. You also do not see your grade until the end, and he basis it off of effort.
Textbooks arent expensive. Show up and participate. Show him youre trying and that you care. Submit drafts and then work them again for the portfolio and bam thats it. Also offers extra credit for attending events outside of class time. Very funny and wonderful to listen to. Genuinely great guy.
Tony Spicer is a cool dude, but he gets side tracked A LOT. You will ask one question and he will go on and on for the rest of the class period, which allows no work to get done. He sends a lot of emails and doesn't use Canvas. He can be silly and laid back, but at the same time, we need a little more structure.
Tony is a hilarious guy, but I can't say I learned anything from him. He rambles on with his personal stories instead of teaching us how to write. He was also absent a good chunk of the semester due to his knee injury. Just do the assignments and you should be fine, as Tony is understanding with situations.
Prof Spicer is honestly the best. He knows so much about poetry and writing in general, but is also one of the most hilarious people I've ever met. He's not afraid to be honest with the class and complain, and I found that very comforting, as COVID has made this year really challenging! If you can take a class with Spicer, do it!
I enjoyed this course. All you have to do to receive an A is read the syllabus and follow directions-but you'll get a lot more out of the class if you want. I saw growth in my writing for sure and even though I've never heard Spicer's voice I know he's a funny guy & great talker.
Tony Spicer is a pretty cool guy! Having an asynchronous class wasn't my first option, but he made it easy. He made schedules, not to give you a bunch of due dates, but to keep you accountable. yea, there are a few actual due dates for the papers you write, but it's just to keep you on top of things so you don't drown in reading lol
He left us blind halfway through the semester due to health issues we would show up to class for 2-3 weeks and no communication that he would not be coming back till we looked at our myemich and seen we all got reassigned to a different professor so halfway through September we got a new one.
