Prof. Stretton is so nice! I had the best time in his lectures because not only does he make them interesting, but he also cares about his students a great deal. I had a very unique and wonderful experience in his class and will remember it forever.

Nicest man in the world. I loved him, fair test and wonderul lecture notes were provided.
I agree with everyone that he is the nicest and the coolest man on earth! I love his teaching style and he genuinely cares about yoy. Prof Stretton, you are the greatest!
one of the nicest, most caring professors i have had thus far. exam wasnt easy---but fair. Very much recommended
He's by far the best professor you'll ever find! He is interesting, funny, engaging, caring, he even makes you sing in class! His exams are very fair, if you're awake during lecture. Tony, you're the best!!
Made human physiology section interesting. Always entertaining; very funny.
By far the best professor on this campus! He truly cares about his students and do whatever it takes to help you learn the material. I've never seen any other professor have retake exams and review sessions at coffee shops! Word of advice, turn off your cell phone or you'll have to sing in class!
He's funny and he has a sweet english accent, that alone keeps me from skipping lecture. The class is interesting but not easy.
Tony is a great professor. He makes you learn the material and although boring at times, he does try to keep you entertained. He's really helpful and wants students to do well, but his exam is tough, but fair. If you study you'll do great in his class.
He is a fantastic lecturer! He is funny and he always keeps it entertaining! He also adds little things such as stories or songs to help you remember key concepts. One of the best professors at the University.
Tony is the best lecutrer on campus, everyone, no matter what their interest should get to experience him. He is so full of life and so caring, i wouldnt guess he is 72!!!
Tony is AMAZING. I highly recommend him and his class (Neuro523). He explains everything, with a little "kick" to it. He emails you every lecture- and includes EVERYTHING in the notes that he said in lecture. If he tells a joke, even the joke is in the notes. Tests aren't too bad, and he provides retakes (for every test) if you do poorly.
Awesome professor. British accent is a plus. He is definitely passionate about his teaching. Notes are helpful--they contain everything. Book not needed. Test is fair. In fact, he gives two tests and you pick the better score of the two. Provides fun stories and rhymes to help you with the material. Extremely helpful and accommodating.
Tony is awesome! He is such a great professor. I recommend taking one of his classes if you can!
Only take this class if he's teaching; makes learning fun and is the best prof I've ever had. Very helpful and friendly; gives you 2 tries on every exam and you get the better grade of the 2. Exams are short answer/essay; can be difficult. Make sure you do the problem sets! Make sure not to slack off on exams, pisses him off and don't expect a redo
Tony is the best professor I have ever had. He is genuinely passionate about the material and the students. Take him if you can.
Tony is THE best professor I've had at UW-Madison. Really, he's that awesome. The exams aren't easy, but there's always a second-chance exam (but this semester you get the average of the two grades, not the highest).
Tony was the best teacher I had at UW. His notes he will send out are both helpful and very entertaining. He is a wonderful scientist and a wonderful teacher. This is a great man with lots of passion for Neuro!
Amazing Class; Amazing teacher. This class is a must take if you are a science major before you graduate. The class is by no means easy but it is well worth all the time spent studying.
The nicest and funniest professor on campus. Anyone that sends out thorough lecture notes riddled with humorous asides deserves an award. Four exams total, and you can retake any of them to improve your score. No curve, and the grading scale is RIDICULOUS (82% average for an AB, 70% for a B). Plus, he has a posh British accent.
Tony is definitely THE best professor I've had. I fell in love with the subject because of him. Whatever it takes -- get into his class. He's not only a fabulous scientist and professor, but also an exceptional human being. The material can get complicated, but with him and Seth, it's well worth studying.
I adored Prof. Stretton. He's a fantastic lecturer. He really wants the students to understand the material. He is passionate about his material and very very funny. TAKE A CLASS OF HIS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE UNIVERSITY! Sweet guy, and the british accent is always a plus.
great guy. extremely good hearted and exceptional at relating to the students. he organized numerous times every week to meet with any students interested. also, his liveness during class and love for what he teaches made him extraordinary.
Tony is the greatest professor on campus. Extremely knowledgeable and distinguished in neurobiology and even more entertaining. The material can be tough but he gives his students every chance to do well. You can retake all exams so getting a good grade isnt too tough. I'd recommend this class to all who are interested in science. Really genuine gu
Maybe I had him in an off semester, but I didn't find Professor Stretton that "amazing." Sure he is a nice guy but he is a bit unclear at times and his first exam was killer. Thank god for second chance!
Tony is really a Great professor. He may be unclear at times during lecture but he is very willing to help and is very personal out of class. He is extremely knowledgeable and his credentials are pretty impressive. He made animal physiology really interesting.
His tests are so nit-picky and HORRIBLE. Do NOT take him! He seems friendly, but as soon as you open your test you will hate him. he focuses on one topic instead of um..the entire BODY! He words everything very badlyy! Be Prepared to reconsider med school
Honestly, I do not understand why so many people think he's so amazing. Yes, Tony was funny, and yes, he made animal physiology interesting, but his lectures were EXTREMELY unclear/all over the place. On top of that, his exams were worded badly and on details he hadn't covered in lecture/the notes. I got an A, but seriously he's not that great.
At times he can be all over the place, and some of his exam questions are a little nit-picky (totally unexpected after the practice exam) but still a pretty good teacher. Tries hard to make sure you understand concepts and gives you two shots at the exam.
Tony is the man. For 75 years old he is the most active person Ive ever seen. His teaching style is old school, very few powerpoint slides. He types out all of the notes you will need and the exams are very detail-oriented. Luckily you can take two exms and the second one is much easier
Tony is hands-down the best professor I've had at UW Madison. It was worth taking 523 just to have him as a professor. He's a great guy, incredibly nice, and is willing to put the students first. I highly recommend taking his classes.
He taught the anatomy section while Viestra taught Botony. Tony is super nice and funny. He cares about his students, and he really wants them to understand the material. A notecard is given, and he gives a "second chance" exam, but don't rely on the card to save you. Make sure you understand all of the concepts as the lectures progress.
Even though he's a great guy, Dr. Stretton's teaching didn't really work for me. He was always scatter-brained during lectures and it was hard to keep up. The exam was far too detailed, although he does give you a do-over. He really tries to help his students, but the material he expected us to know was way too expansive for an intro course.
Tony is a GREAT professor -- very funny, intelligent, and interesting. One of the best professors I've ever had!!!
Absolutely WONDERFUL professor. Love the class and really enjoyed the learning process. Its hard material but he's willing to work with you until you understand.
Tony is a great professor. He is engaging and witty and really succeeds in sparking interest in a subject that's pretty daunting. He takes an experimental approach to teaching, which is made awesome by the fact that he knows personally many of the folks that have done pioneering research in neurology. He's great, take his class.
Not the greatest for 152. Likes to ramble about unrelated, random things. Will waste class time with useless information. Jumps around in his slides, doesn't stick to the layout. Does send out helpful notes, about 80 pages of them. Has a second chance exam, which is nice.
Dr. Stretton is a very intelligent, funny, and nice professor. However, if you take bio152 with him be prepared to get questions on the exam such as "What was Tony's grandmother's name?" "Why did he throw daffodils in class during the lecture?"..and so forth...Notes that he sends out are very helpful, but it's A LOT to read.
Tony was truly one of the best professors I've had here at Madison. He was passionate about what he taught and made class a pleasure to attend. Tests were far from easy, but Tony went out of his way to make sure everyone had the opportunity to succeed.
Tony is an absolutely wonderful professor. You can tell his main goal is actually for everyone to LEARN. He has second chance exams so people study twice and do better, and he's incredibly helpful in office hours. So much admiration
Tony isn't a good teacher. End of story. However, he has second chance exams. He sends out lecture notes which are basically transcripts of the lecture. Lecture is incomprehensible because he rants about experiments done in 350 BC. However, the lecture notes and grading scale make this a class worth taking.
All of the wonderful things you are reading are true. GREAT lecture notes. Very easy grading scale. 2nd chance exams. He is very funny, charismatic, and British. He can derail a bit, but it's usually at least entertaining. Incredibly smart and personally knew almost every scientist in the textbook. Do yourself a favor and take this class with Tony
Tony is a very funny and sweet guy. However, I found his lectures disorganized and very hard to follow. His exam questions required a lot of detail, so study up. He loves to test on experimental design.
He is a super nice and funny guy but his lectures are very unorganized and he jumps all around his slides.
Don't understand why people like tony. Good guy, funny, talks about his wife and kid a lot, but he didnt teach me anything. i learned everything from youtube. His test basically has the same questions from previous exams. So try to get your hand on as many previous exams as you can.
Lecture is unorganized mess. It is more beneficial to just copy the online notes and power points instead of going. Tests are VERY tricky!!
Tony is a great guy, he's funny and loves what he teaches, but he is impossible to learn from. In lecture he is much too scatter-brained, his power points are incomprehensible, mostly just diagrams. He is incredibly easily distracted which is annoying. He really tries, but he is an awful teacher. Seth Blair was FAR better.
His lectures are a bit hard to follow, but his notes are very clear and explain everything he wants you to know. Know the notes, and study. Very entertaining, overall pleased.
He is a funny guy in class but that is because he is off topic half of the class. I only went to class to do the clicker questions because the notes he sent us were verbatim what he said in class. His exams were relatively easy compared to the amount of information presented in the class.
Tony Stretton is probably one the most caring professors I have had at UW. He is extremely helpful during office hours.
Interesting class, work load is not too bad. He gives very clear and detailed outlines of the lectures, which are sufficient (class attendance isn't too important, and you won't be able to understand much anyway as his lectures are pretty disorganized). Second chance exams come in handy as well...
Attendance isn't mandatory, BUT GO. His handwriting is pretty awful but he gives out typed lecture notes which is really nice. Best thing about this course: RETAKES AVAILABLE FOR EVERY EXAM. No catch. If you did bad, no problem. Retake it. You get the better of the two scores. Now that's a professor that wants you to actually learn.
I have no idea what I learned. I have no idea what he said ever. Buuuut I got an AB soooo idk. Just read the notes and use google. Really nice guy. And must be super smart bc he knows all the people we talk about in class.
If you got him on your 151, do not expect anything from his lecture. He use small pictures small notes in all his lectures in a 500 person room and expect you to see then when you are 30 meters away. His lecture does not contain useful material. He have lecture notes and slides and I need to read and study from discussion.
Heard about his good reputation in other classes BUT he is really not good at doing big lectures. Write on a blackboard in B10 Ingraham, the second largest classroom in the whole university, you couldn't expect seeing anything if you don't sit in the first row. He seems funny but all his lecture couldn't get to the point. Discussion is mandatory.
His lectures are not very focused or interesting. A lot of what he writes on the boards is small and unreadable, but it's what is important for exams.
I took Neuro 523 with Tony Stretton roughly five years ago. I'm now in my first year of medical school, and my Neural Science course has rolled around. This means: KABOOM let's do all 523 material in less than 2 weeks! I rummaged through my old notes and found the ones Tony sent out to the class on electrophysiology and they have been INVALUABLE!
Great man and easily personable, but lectures extremely hard to follow - making it useless for most. Long lecture notes are provided though.
Stretton is a hilarious professor, however his lectures are impossible to follow and understand. However, he sends out long essay versions of his lectures out after class, so take notes on those. You don't really have to go to class. Just study for the tests and read up on the textbooks.
Be sure to read his lecture notes BEFORE class, otherwise you will have difficulty understanding the material Tony presents. He gets on tangents easily and only displays picturesdiagrams on power points, both of which make it hard to follow along. Tony believes in 2nd chances, so students have the option to take another version of the exam.
He mumbles and is difficult to understand. His lectures are too long and contain far too much material. Very respected in biology research, but not a good teacher.
Strongly recommend reading the lecture notes he sends out--that's the information he's going to stress the most. Go to office hours; he's willing to clearly explain anything, whether it's from class or just a random question about biology, until you fully understand. The perfect person to have intellectual conversations with.
Best. Prof. Ever. There was a power outage the day before the 1st retake and he no one could access the review materials. He arranged for the retake to be in class two days later so everyone would have time to study. Lectures are funny and slightly informative, but you don't need to go and can do well only using the comprehensive notes he gives.
He is the best professor I've ever had. Super kind and caring. I can tell that I have learned A LOT from him. Go to his office hours and he is willing to explain anything or be friend with you!
Tony is very smart, and it's crazy how he personally knows the scientists who carried out major experiments in the field of molecular and neurobiology. Although it can occasionally be hard to follow his lectures, the lecture notes he provides explain in detail the major points that he covers during lecture. Tony is very helpful during office hours.
He is a good guy. It is hard to follow him in lecture sometimes, but his lecture notes that he sends out are completely understandable so focus on this those. He really cares for his students so if you feel there is a grading discrepancy on your exam feel free to talk to him about it, he will take a look & reward you if it is within reason.
Favorite Professor in college, love this guy.
Wonderful teach of 616, very personable and got to know each of the students. One of the best classes I've taken thanks to him and the other professors
Tony is hilarious and incredibly intelligent. He always seems to have a connection to the scientist who discovered whatever he's talking about. His lectures can be hard to follow, but he posts the notes online and these are really all you need to do well. He is available to help multiple times a week and really cares about the students.
Tony's lectures are a little hard to follow, but he is an amazing teacher and really wants his students to do well. His office hours are really helpful if you get lost. He also post all his notes online, which is all you really need to pass, but I would still suggest going to class, Tony is hilarious.
Tony was probably the funniest professor I've ever had, not to mention one of the nicest. His lectures are a bit disorganized, but he posts long lecture notes online which are extremely helpful and you need to read in order to do well on the tests. He genuinely wants his students to succeed to.
A little difficult to follow along in lecture, but read his notes and you'll understand it. His exams are usually very similar to his practice exams.
Lectures are hard to follow, but his lecture notes that he posts online are good -- go to class anyway because he is hilarious. He gives two exams -- the first was 75% questions from his quizzes and practice exam, the second is a bit more difficult, but you take your highest score. Extremely nice and funny guy, makes lecture fun to go to.
Tony is an amazing guy and definitely knows what he is talking about; however, being a professor for a 400+ student lecture was not his forte. He posts the slideshow online along with some of his notes, so I wouldn't bother going to his lectures. They just seemed to be pointless to me. The best part of Tony is he gives two chances for the final.
Tony is an amazing scientist and truly funny/inspirational man! His lectures are extremely interesting--so go to them! However, his British accent, occasional mumbling and tangents make lectures somewhat hard to follow. Make sure to keep up with the material--because it can go fast, especially if you've never taken an anat/phys course.
He's a crazy British dude who wants you to succeed. Know how graphs work, read his lecture notes, and do the practice test (it has a bunch of the same questions as the exam he gives). Also, silence your phone in lectures... or else...
Prof. Stretton makes many of the students laugh and enjoy the topics he is presenting. It's best to review the lecture materials before class, or you may become lost in the ensuing hour.
His lectures were very disorganized and his slides where over-detailed pictures. The textbook will not help much. However, before each lecture he post lecture notes which contain everything you need to know for the exams. They are extremely detailed. Many of the test questions are the same as the lecture and quiz questions.
At first, you may be overwhelmed by the amount of drawing and scribbled notes that Tony writes on the board, but don't worry, he posts REALLY good online notes. Definitely go to lecture and focus, but don't get caught up on the details. Tony is hilarious and is obviously very well known in his field. You can tell he loves what he does.
He has notes on all you will get tested on which is super useful if you want to get a good grade. Now, you gotta work for it cause there's a lot of stuff on those notes that he doesn't necessarily cover in lecture, but he's such an entertaining and nice professor, I'm not bitter. I got a good grade with him anyways.
Tony has really entertaining lectures, but if you don't already know the information it's probably really hard to follow. His tests don't ask any questions that require real knowledge--only memorization of facts and little details, so it's really easy. Read his notes he posts, even though they're super long.
Tony has a lot of experience but is not an effective lecturer. What he writes on the board is illegible and he talks really fast when going over the course material so that he can spend time telling jokes. His notes are posted online which have everything you need to know for the exam, but they are long so review them and make sure you understand.
Awesome professor! This rating doesnt make much sense since he just gave his last lecture today... but he is one of the best professor Ive had so far. He could have been a bit more organized but he made lectures very interesting and never missed an occasion to make a joke. He really wants the students to succeed. Thank you Dr. Stretton !
