V. clear in lecture. Midterms and exams straightforward, so just study the lecture notes. Always cheerful and v. approachable.
Not bad prof, not bad course. Better than Kerry Delaney that a lot of my friends had for animal phys previously.

455 = Endocrinology; this guy's great. Tries to make things as interesting as possible, and is more than willing to take the time out of his day to help you out with whatever questions you have. Only issue was the use of powerpoint for the entire class, which was never posted online. If you didn't understand the figure, you'd have to go see him.
He likes to make you write lots of extra info, and your hand gets cramped by the end of class. Its important to try and hang on his every word, because he literally wants you to know everything. For the paper, try to pick a topic that has nothing to do with humans, something related to animals and sex is best, and I think that is how I got an A.
Makes class enjoyable and worth coming to.
Lectures were interesting, but all notes must be reviewed, you must learn everything on your own. Notes miss out alot of info that is needed to be known. TA's do a great job of going over missed info. Does and alright job teaching, way better than the 1st prof we had for 1st part of the semester (E. Palsson)
Lecture notes were vague and too general, textbook use is a must. The final exam overall was relatively easy. Some questions were the exact same questions he gave out on the review sheet. The TA's for bio 101 are a great help =)
Terrible notes and basically an overall terrible professor altogether. All of his notes are just pictures with few subheadings from it. You need to read the text or else you are screwed. Don't rely on him, he's useless. Completely and utterly terrible
One of the funniest profs ever, makes crude jokes here and there, class time flies by. Exams are detail oriented, but reasonable and fair marking. Expects really good english usage but will help you edit if you can get it to him early enough. Tutorials have presentations, useless aspect, and the TA we had was not useful at all.
Powerpoint slides are not detailed, textbook provides more information than him. Funny during the lecture though
Interesting class with great course content and very amusing prof. Lectures involve lots of hand writing which is great as it engages you with the powerpoint slides. Lectures were also digitized which were nice. Very open to questions and very approachable during office hours. The TA was terrible however, making tutorials boring and uninformative.
Tapes his lectures, so it's your choice whether or not to go. Enthusiastic, likes to make jokes, can be boring for the most part. Taught second half of class, final was difficult. Only way to do well on final is to ask TAs exactly what's on final, as some questions you wouldn't have thought you would've had to know.
he taught my second half of the semester and i didn't love him or hate him. his lectures have a whole bunch of pictures and not too many words so you've REALLY gotta read the book. His exam was all written response but the questions weren't too bad in my opinion. overall, an okay teacher
I found Williams to be interested in the material he presented and lectured. His lecture presentations were extremely helpful when studying for midterms and finals. I also found that when you went and asked him questions, he was very helpful and wanted you to do and ask him more questions.
Midterm was super hard, you have to give alot of detail and like word for word of his power points...
His lecture notes are pretty straight-forward, so I find myself never reading the textbook. Lecture midterm was very fair, can't say the same for the lab midterm though. Take BISC101 if Tony is teaching! He's very funny, and his accent makes him easy to listen to. :) Only thing you gotta watch out for are the dreadful labs. :(
He's a bit biased and favours some students, you can tell if you go to his office hours. Don't like his teaching style. For his short answers, if you don't use to correct term but you explained it correctly you don't get full marks.
If you read the textbook before you go to lecture, his notes (which are mostly diagrams) will make perfect sense to you and help clarify what you've already read. He's funny and easy to listen to. As long as you're prepared the exams are easy. Great prof
As long as you memorize his lecture notes you are guaranteed an A in this class. No need to waste your time with the textbook. exam questions for the midterm and final are straight from the lecture slides.
His midterm and finals are just like his notes. Memorize them and you will do good. loves to communicate via emails and generally does a good job explaining
Dr. Williams is a good prof that clearly loves biology. His accent is cool to listen to but at times his fast talking is hard to understand. The exam is identical to his lecture notes, and the textbook is not needed at all. I would definitely take a course of his again.
Great prof, very interested in what he's teaching and helpful towards students. He covers a LOT in lectures though. Exams are straight from his lectures.
Hes an extremely boring prof, and half his students don't show up after three weeks. However his exams are straight from the lecture slides, so if you dont go to class and study them youll do well.
This course has a lot of content and he doesn't exactly focus on that. He fills his lecture with examples that are more complex than the course is meant to cover and it confuses the hell out of you. He seems approachable in class but absolutely rude if you visit during office hours.
Fabulous and funny professor! His lectures are really engaging and his accent just makes it even better. His notes/slides are heavy with images and can be problematic if you don't do textbook readings before each lecture but I found them really helpful because I'm a visual learner anyway.
Useless professor. Marks extremely hard, no part marks on exams (all or nothing) it's extremely unfair. Cracks sex jokes every 5 minutes thinking he's REALLY funny but after the first one, nobody even cares about his jokes anymore AS THEY'RE NOT FUNNY. Unless you really need BISC 101, DO NOT take this course. USELESS, UNFAIR PROFESSOR.
makes way too many comments on reproduction and things. kind of awkward tbh. exams questions are straightfoward but you need to have very specific details and key terms otherwise you don't get the mark. the labs are pretty fun though
Goes over the information extremely fast but the slides provide enough information for you to study off of later on. The textbook is pretty much useless. He seems really nice. Wouldn't recommend him if you're looking for a GPA booster tho.
He whips through material super fast but all lectures are recorded. Tests are directly from the notes so as long as you memorize them word for word, you'll do well. He tries hard to engage students with biology. He also sends a lot of emails.
Rips through lectures, thankfully they're recorded, but almost pointless to go to lectures cause he goes so fast you can't understand. Midterms are ridiculous, they're fair exams, but the marking is disgusting. IF its not the WORD FOR WORD, definition from the textbook its wrong, not partial marks, giant X. AVOID and take HSCI 100 if you can.
His exams are straight from the lecture slides, only problem is the marking. It seems he sets his Ta's to remove marks at whim. His lecture slides are good and he's definitely interested in bio. Just a tough course to get a b, if you want that or a b- you're gonna have to really plug away at it
You can tell he's interested with what he's teaching but his tests are VERY difficult, he wants you to memorize word for word...if you miss 1 thing you don't get full marks. I've also received over 150 emails from him in just 1 semester...
Lecture was all over the place and not interesting at all. Exams are straight out of the notes, but answers need to be word for word. Notes included a lot of pictures. Wouldn't recommend taking bio with him!
Very passionate and interesting prof. Honestly don't think he was hard, his exams were right out of his slides that were very well prepared. Yeah, they may mark hard but knowing before hand that it's going to be right from his slides, studying is actually easier. His lecture were also interesting, recommend taking this course with him!
Tony is a pretty solid prof. He is passionate about bio, but he could tone down on the sex references. He hates it when students whine about grades, so don't challenge the mark unless they miss a page in the addition process. Memorize every letter on the slides; examples that may seem useless are his 5 or 6 marks questions on exams!
Honestly Tony is a very fair professor. Holla to all those first years that you have to try for every course. If you are interested in it, life just gets 10 times easier. So actually put in the effort and study, review slides pay attention in lab and #1 rule go to office hours even if the prof may not seem approachable. They always are!(trust me)
Probably the hardest course I've ever taken at SFU. The first day of class this girl next to me was talking about how it was the second time she took the course because she got such a low mark the first time. Tests answers need to be as precise as a dictionary definition. Extremely hard marker. He's a nice guy, but as a professor.. different story.
Great prof and very helpful! Exams are fair, but the marking is a different story. Focus on his lecture slides rather than the textbook. His exam questions are based off his slides. Write down as much detail as you remember even if the question is only worth 2 or 3 marks because he is VERY VERY VERY specific in what he wants.
There is a lot to cover in biology, what he did in a month was what I learnt in 3 months of high school, so make sure you READ the text book before lecture to make sure things click when your listening to him in class. The test is basically the power points, so make sure you understand. Any questions ask, he's nice :)
He takes the time to put the essential information for students on his power points and presents them in an organized manner that will help students succeed. The course is fairly easy with the exception of the labs.
You can tell Tony is really interested in the topic, but I found it a bit hard to follow along at times because the lectures are quite boring and repetitive. He doesn't like when you ask a question that he already may have answered before and is quite a tough marker, you actually need to remember every single word on his slides.
Midterms are not bad since the materials are directly come from lecture slides but the marking is brutal and super vague "fill in the blank" questions. There's no participation mark for attendance so it's not mandatory to go to lecture but make sure you read his slides regularly. Course itself is hard but prof is okay but don't respect A from him.
I really enjoyed his class. His exams are mostly based on the slides. He really does a good job explaining difficult concepts and has a cool accent too!
This class was honestly so engaging and interesting. As long as you keep up with the readings before lectures, you'll do fine. His tests are extremely fair, but make sure you remember every last detail on them. Even if it seems unimportant, chances are it'll be on the exam.
BISC 101 covers A LOT of material and Dr. Williams does it well! His exams are fair but for full points, he wants almost word for word as from his powerpoint slides. You have to learnmemorize the terminology and apply it correctly (as per usual biology couses).
Tony was an alright prof. His exams are beyond brutally hard. The lab component isn't too hard as long as you have a good TA. There was way too much info in such condensed lectures. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you need it for your degree. He posted the his lectures and slides after the lectures so it was hard to be prepared.
Prof is great at explaining things and makes funny comments occasionally which keeps you entertained enough. Tests are quite difficult, requiring exact words based off the powerpoint. Even further, the final test is the hardest as it covers the most, although its non-cumulative. The lab portion helps raise your grade a little bit if you study.
Tony does show great interest in Biology. However, his lectures aren't always the most interesting ones. Personally, his myidterms weren't that hard as long as you can memorize a relative amount of material on all the ppt. WARNING: do not do the same for the lecture final!! the amount covered for the final was immense. lab final was easy.
Nice guy with a sense of humour. Tests are marked extremely hard and he fills your inbox with emails. Take this course if you have to but be warned it takes a lot of effort.
Even after studying a lot I ended up not getting a good grade. When I went to go talk to Tony about my grade and the final exam, he actually said he does not recommend that first years take this course in the first semester because it has too much content. He recommends taking Bisc 102 before 101. Nice how they tell us this AFTER we take the course
The mid-terms are fine as long as you read over everything and memorize the heavily emphasized things in lecture. The final is huge and requires you to know a tonne in great detail. Fair but difficult prof. The lab exam requires a fair bit of studying as well, so make sure you write good notes.
Midterms were fair, final was brutal. Don't take with him unless you have too. Total GPA destroyer lol
Midterm exams are pretty fair but the final had so much material. Memorize his lecture notes WORD FOR WORD or you will lose marks. He's a tough grader for sure.
Tony is a funny guy and makes jokes in lectures but his tests are hard. This class is more about memorizing word-for-word his lecture slides than it is about actually understanding material. That and if you ask him a question that he may have already answered in one of his billions of emails then he will not respond kindly. Avoid if you can.
Would not recommend to a first year, especially in first semester. Absolute GPA destroyer and confidence killer. Tony might be a nice guy, but tests are terrible, and if you don't memorize his ppt's verbatim, you probably won't pass. Labs & tutorials are very helpful though in terms of understanding the content. I used to like bio b4 this class....
Tony Williams is a great lecturer and shows a great passion for the subject. I also respect how he tries to make the long lectures as interesting as possible and he is also very good with answering email questions. Nevertheless, his marking scheme is INSANE!! (rRNA wrong - Ribosomal RNA correct)! Very very difficult to get good grade (55% average)
Great prof, condenses a lot of the information quite well from the textbook but beware study everything on the power points to get a good grade! Very passionate and even though he had optional lectures I loved them and never missed any because he genuinely tried to show there is more to Biology than just being tested on regurgitation of facts.
Despite this course being heavy in content, Tony really tries to make the information as short and precise as he can. He teaches really well and his powerpoint slides are extremely useful. I really enjoy his extra lectures - the biomimicry one was fantastic. However, he is quite strict with the grading and so the tip is to answer with precision!
Good prof with interesting lectures. There's a lot of material to cover, but Williams teaches it well. Midterms/exams are tough, but fair. You need A LOT of precision and detail in your answers to get full marks.
One of my hardest first year courses! You must really keep up with the homework and material yourself. Has interesting and engaging lectures.
Tony is a nice guy and is passionate about what he teaches but the exams are ridiculous. If you don't memorize the slides word for word you won't get a very good grade on the exam. He doesn't put much emphasis on understanding the topic, more just memorizing his words. I would recommend starting to review the lectures right after he teaches them!
First off id like to say that Tony is great at making the BISC 101 interesting. Sadly, his marking rubric is focused solely on the memorization of his slides rather than understanding the material. If you intend to do well in his class expect to memorize lecture slides completely. Also, mandatory lab section was great and thankfully exam was easy!
I enjoyed taking BISC101 with Dr. Williams. Lectures are clear and well-organized. Good use of visuals and good presentation style (does not just read off slides). Attend his extra lectures - the topics show up on exams as bonus questions. Exams are straightforward if you understand material. Make sure you can apply terminology correctly!
Tony is such a fantastic prof! However, this class was not easy. His exams were fair IF you listened to his lectures - I found that memorizing his powerpoints were just enough to get you a 50, anything above that, you need to listen to his lectures that he (thankfully) records.
Tony is a great and passionate prof but his exams and midterm are crazy hard. His marking is unfair and he doesn't do anything to prepare you for the final. literally died in this course and will have to take it again :(
Amazing lectures, this is clearly a man that is passionate about his work. Midterms and final require a lot of studying and have very specific marking criteria but are doable. Power-points he gives you to study off of are very useful, follow them like a religion as the tests are 100% based off of them. All in all a great man with a tough class.
For midterms and exams, MEMORIZE EVERYTHING ON THE SLIDES. E V E R Y T H I N G.
Favorite prof at sfu
amazing and hilarious. he is a hard grader because the answer to all the test question are in his powerpoints
Such a good prof!!!! His exams are pretty hard so I would recommend making cue cards after each lecture but he does give hints on whats on the exam and gives some bonus marks. Highly recommend if you are interested in bio and willing to put in some work.
Chill prof, very nice and passionate about his teachings. Marks fair, but the exams are difficult. Study a lot, read between the lines. Great proff tho
Very passionate about the subject, which makes the lectures less dull. Overall, exams are just OK, but he will ask specific details from his slides, which tends to get annoying. Lab portion is pretty easy and straightforward, make sure you prepare for the lab final in advanced because it covers a lot of material. 8/10 recommend this class
Tony is very intellectual! However he is a hard marker and his tests are weighed heavily on the lecture slides. If your someone who can't learn by just listening to someone talk, don't take his class. The averages for his tests are about 55%. My advice go to every lecture and re go over them that night listening to his audio recordings. Be cautious
Tony is literally amazing. Going to his classes were easy because they were engaging and entertaining. Dont lay a hand on a textbook, you wont need it at all. For exams study word for word his recordings and lecture notes, thats all you need to get a B-A. Theres a lot of info for the final to study so make sure you go to class and study early.
Tony's exams are straight from the powerpoints, textbook is essentially useless as all examinable material is in the slides. He does his best to make the material interesting and gives examples in class but tests can still be frustrating as you have to remember EVERYTHING on the powerpoint.
Amazing prof, his lectures were actually entertaining and fun to attend. His exams are wholey based on his lecture slides so lots of memorization. Lab exam was easier than I expected it to be, lots of simple questions mixed with a few hard ones (quiz questions were seen on the final). Class average of C+.
You literally need to memorize the lecture slides word for word in order to get full marks and also the graphs and pictures he draws in class. I do not recommend taking this class if it is your very first semester at SFU.
Love this dude, all you need to do to get 100% in his class is memorize the slides, all exam questions are pulled straight off of them. Lectures are decently interesting but are not mandatory, as they are recorded. Just start studying ahead, memorizing his lecture slides and you'll be an A student. Don't bother with textbooks. Exams are very fair.
Tony was pretty average. I never went to lectures and did well in the class. Just know everything on the slides and the midterm/final is pretty easy.
His slides are useless. They contain vague information with little to no context. You'll have to put in a lot of work to understand basically everything he is trying to teach. His lectures are dull, he drones on about useless topics that have nothing to do with the necessary material. When you try and pay attention, he is too difficult to follow.
Memorize his slides and regurgitate them WORD FOR WORD on exams and you'll get an A. WORD FOR WORD is the key word here, though, any deviation from his definitions and you'll easily lose half the marks on a question. Don't really need to read textbook except to strengthen understanding of difficult concepts... I didn't go to any lectures after MT1.
His lecture are very boring and you have to memorize them because he wants your answers on the exams word for word or you dont get marks. I have bad memory and this class was horrible for me. Avoid him if you cant memorize things because there's a lot of material in this course. Don't even mention the graphs on the exams oh god
lots of memorization, you don't need to memorize word for word as long as you can still convey the concepts in a clear way that actually answer the question. Most of his lectures are good however some slides reallllyyy lack context. Manageable as long as you actually put the work in. Dont expect anything easy.
I hate how BISC 101 taught by Tony is pretty much pure memorization. In lectures, he goes through a lot of scattered information that confuses students. Also, since it's so memorization heavy, the only effective way to get a good mark in this course seems to be CRAM right before the exam.
Tony is a good prof but his lecture slides are often dry and its very easy to fall asleep throughout his lectures. To study for midterms and finals just MEMORIZE every word from his slide as he expects your answer to match his slides word for word! Recommend taking classes with him because if you memorize his slides you should be good!
Don't touch the textbook. Learn, understand, and memorize everything on the slides. If you show up to every exam knowing every word on the slides, you will get an A. Just memorize the slides.
Get ready to memorize everything for your midterm and final exam, he will tell you that's not how his class works however it truly is .... It is less about understanding each concept and putting into your own words then it is about answering it in his words with the information on the slideshow, absolutely ridiculous !!!!!!
I am one of his big fan. I like the way he tests. EVERYTHING you need to know is inside his lecture note. No needs of using textbook. Just memorize everything in his note, including graphs, and pictures he draws. I am pretty sure you will get A+ or A if you have bad luck
Tony was an awesome prof and did a really good job explaining the material. Sometimes the material was a bit dry but that's not his fault. No need to read the textbook. Just go over his lecture recordings and slides and you should do really well! definitely my fault that I ended up with a C+ because I didn't really try in his class.
It's online so probably not the best to compare with in-person lectures, but he seems to really care about the material and enjoys teaching it. Especially like his zoom backgrounds--penguins and stuff. Not a hardass, likes to interact with students via chat. Explains things very well in detail and all the info you need is on his slides.
Super nice and gives interesting lectures. Although they are long and get boring, all you need to know is on his slides and lectures.
He made his exams more difficult because he thought people were cheating online and on one of the midterms he asked us questions that we had never even learned about.
My class was online and this meant that without a doubt there would be academic dishonesty to a certain extent. This meant the average was higher than usual on the first MT. His solution? in his own words, make the second midterm so hard you wouldn't do well even if you cheated. Top-tier solution. The second midterm average was quite low.
This professor makes you memorize his slides word for word, or you will not get marks on his exam. He made the second midterm much more difficult because he believed a portion of the class was cheating. A couple questions were on the second midterm even though he explicitly said they would not be.
Tony's tests are based on the slides. He expects you to know the information from the slides very well and on the test, the answers should be answered very similar to slides which makes him a strict marker. The material was interesting but it might not be easy to learn them just from the slides so the textbook comes in handy.
At first, I thought this class would be amazing. It ended up being terrible because of the exams. He needs us to memorize every single slide word for word. Spelling mistakes and tiny mistakes can cause marks to be taken off as well.
Doesnt accommodate to students situations and is extremely reliant on exam marks. Good thing is the exams are based directly off lecture notes so if you can memorize hundreds of slides you might have a chance of doing well on the tests.
Doesnt explain concepts well so I suggest reading the textbook for confusing parts. For his exams you need to memorize hundreds of detailed slides word for word and understand it well. There is short answer questions you must write it exactly how hes worded it + correct spelling. He doesnt give enough time. Very hard class avg was C+. Good luck.
Terrible prof terrible person, doesnt accommodate to anyones situation and problems they may have outside of class. First MT he made doable therefore avg was around 75 however soon as he realized students arent failing he made 2 MT hard to ensure grades dropped. Doesnt teach well and exams are exactly as seen on slides so have to memorize tons
First midterm avg being high made him angry so he made 2nd midterm and final hard asf. People say to just memorize his slidestrust me its a lot easier said then done lol. Study hard and understand cuz even control F wont save you.
Tony is a really nice professor. He cares about his students a lot. The tests are manageable as long as you are on top of everything. Most of the test questions are straight from the ppts so memorize the ppts. His TA Ahmed was the best. He helped a lot and made everything 10 times easier and more fun. Be on top of everything and you will be fine.
thought he was ok until the mt. average for the 1st one was high and he didn't like that, so he made the 2nd one AND the final unreasonably hard. topics were pulled off his slides and you need to know them word for word, even a small spelling mistake for the short ans makes it wrong. exams also had some things we didn't even learn
Initially I felt prof Williams was a laid back and had a fun sense of humour. He seems like a nice guy but as a prof he is rather sub par. I found when preparing for his midterms and finals that his lecture slides were rather messy. Like mentioned already, he made the second midterm significantly harder than the first one, hoping to lower the avg.
This man legit hates answering students' questions. Since the class was online, he made the questions a bit more difficult. He hates high averages so he made the second midterm way harder and the final was just a joke. I say if he outlines something or hints something its going to be on the final and answer questions on the slides that have no answ
He decided our first midterm mark was too high and decided to make the second midterm so difficult that the class average was below passing. He seemed much happier with the class failing than doing well, but if you do good in your lab you can save your grade. The grading criteria changes depending on Tony's mood and is super unclear.
Professor Williams is well-known as a first year gate keeper. Doing well in his class requires you to practically memorize his lecture. Nothing else is needed to get an A. Memorize the EXACT wording of his lectures, especially coloured key words. He WILL ask you and the EXACT copied wording from his slides will be required to get full marks.
I LOVE TONY I DON'T UNDERstand why everyone is so stressed by him HONESTLY study the lectures and you will do just fine cuz all of his exams are from his lectures also he is so caring and always ready to answer questions in details and HE IS FUNNY. I dont know what yall want but he is a 1000/10 to me
GUYS HE IS AWSOME BELIEVE ME IF U GET A CHANCE TAKE IT WITH HIM!! his goal is not to fail u just memorize his lectures and u will be fine
Tony is a decent prof. Lectures are essentially a lot of ranting with a mishmash of evidence from various studies and little anecdotes about his own research. He makes a big deal of any request that is made of him (such as providing rubrics/learning objectives) but he did usually comply and help us out. Make sure you attend lectures!!
took this as a P/F seminar for 1 credit, Tony was great. Super passionate, super funny.
Took this class as a P/F course. I loved how this class required just attendance and a 500-word summary. His first lectures were really cool and inspiring. He has a great sense of humour. Would love to take a BISC class of his one day!
Tony is great. I wish I could take another course with him.
Terrible prof too lecture heavy very strict and decided class avg was too high so he made everything harder.
Mr. Williams is a passionate professor at SFU. His knowledge of Biology as a whole is fantastic! Some cautions would be the way he grades exams. If you do not use the EXACT wording from his slides and lectures, you will get the question wrong even if you answer the question correctly. Make sure you show up to every lecture!
Very bad teacher. Expects you to know word for word every single slide (even though he says he wants you to understand it). Better to memorize. He does fill in the blank questions which make no sense so be prepared to memorize. Gives attitude when you ask questions about why you got marks off on an exam.
HE IS ACTUALLY THE WORST PROF EVER, VERY UNHELFUL AND DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST
I really had a bad time during BISC 101 this semester. Tony was very unhelpful and really seemed like he wanted us to fail. His lectures were not useful, it was just him speaking off the slides and providing no important information. His exams often had wrong information, unclear instructions and just a terrible format.
This guy literally has no idea what hes teaching even though hes the chair of biology, he would tell us in class that things he taught previously were actually wrong and that we have to figure them out ourselves for the exams, and for the final he made it purposely hard because the class average was the highest he's ever had at 63%.
Easy one of the worst profs I have had. Do not take this class with him. Super rude, does not care about students. Literally was so rude to my friend for appealing a marking mistake that he made... claiming that he was being super generous with her for giving her the correct marks. Like hello? Horrible.
I went to him for help several times all he did was he critique and mock my grade after the first midterm. Our class average was below 60% which was apparently way higher than the typical averages for this course so do not expect to do well because apparently a 60% is great for a 100 level bio course.
Has the most boring lectures, makes taking notes difficult as he goes through slides extremely fast, doesnt explain things well. Also does not like to see his class do well, told us that the class average was too high (it was below 60) and then decided to make the next exam harder to drop everyone
Exams are weird and unrelated to lecture. Pretty impatient guy, not a fan.
exams were a joke, he asked the most random questions that he never talked about in lectures just do youself a favour and never take a class with him
his lectures are SO BORING AND POINTLESS, exams had the most out of pocket questions, he is very rude when you ask him questions AVOID AVOID
Tony had so much potential to make this course bearable, but instead he chose to make exams very hard with content that was very unspoken of in the notes. Joked too much about grading us poorly in our exam. Seems that past years he taught this course the reviews are positive not sure what happened this year
Idk what the big deal is, but this Tony guy teaches a decent class. I didn't go to lectures but I caught the tail-end of one and he seemed like a solid guy.👍
Midterms and the Final exam were extremely poorly created with mistakes DURING THE EXAM. Lectures were optional as the exams were based on PowerPoint slides, but questions during the exam were very off-topic and random at times. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST TO SAVE MENTAL HEALTH
The midterms were poorly designed, with only written questions and no multiple choice, despite being a biology course. Material taught often doesn't appear on exams. The instructor is dismissive, mocks marks, and offers no flexibility. Lectures are erratic, with disorganized slides. This creates a discouraging experience for first-year students.
The main stuff you spent 10 hours studying for? Don't worry it won't be on your midterm or finals, it will be random questions about topics he mention very very briefly.
Williams is pretty decently civil, and the material he teaches is not too bad. But his tests were traumatic; no/limited MC, fill-in-the blank questions were quite vague, and you MUST memorize his powerpoints to do well overall. If memorization is your strong suit, you can manage. If you can avoid taking 101 with him, I recommend doing so.
Tony Williams's lectures are boring, and half of the content isn't even on the exams. The midterm had the highest average he ever had at 63%, and so he decided to make the second midterm and final extremely difficult and on random insignificant topics from his lectures and slides. if possible: Avoid
Half of the lectures were a waste of time. Tony does not prep you for the exams. He says the test is based on the powerpoint and it is....but only the minor things. On the final there were questions based on topics we barely discussed in class. Textbook was not used so don't buy it. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Honestly most of these reviews are pretty harsh but overall the class was not bad you just have to be willing to put in the work and study, he makes it really clear that his exams are from the slides so literally just study that and you will do really well in the course, going to lectures is a waste of time, just listen to the recordings
I hated coming to his class, made every lecture boring. His tests are ridiculous. Had to memorize his slides word for word and Ta's marked those test like their lives were on the line. If you have photographic memory youd ace this class. Tony is also unapproachable during class. Gives attitude whenever you ask a question.
Not the worst prof I've had, but also not the best. The lectures were so pointless and boring. On his tests you have to copy word for word what his ppt slides say in order to get full marks. The tests weren't too bad but he is a hard marker. We didn't even use the textbook at all so don't buy it.
Tony was OK for BISC101, his exams are pretty tough and he expects a lot of memorization.
only written tests with questions focusing on points barely touched upon in the lecture
The exams were bearable for me, but I completely agree with what others said about memorizing word for word, and that the bigger concepts were completely avoided n instead I'm asked about what the actual freak a goiter is. Went to his office hours once and he told me to look in the textbook to find the answer to my question. AVOID AT ALL COSTS PLS
Lecture slides are the only thing testable which is good, but you need to know everything word for word for the midterms/exams which is insanely difficult when studying. Don't buy the textbook! Didn't use it once! Lectures were mostly dry but he cracked some jokes here and there which were funny.
Tony is an engaging professor who brings a great sense of humor to the classroom. The course has a straightforward structure - just attendance and a short summary. Unstuck AI was a handy study aid alongside the free textbook. Would take another BISC class with this prof.
He is an alright prof, not very engaging but his exams were extremely fair. He does do extra point questions he will mention only in the lecture. The exams were straight off the slides so you don't really need the textbook. I studied the night before for every exam and did totally fine. Please just study the slides with a friend or something.
the class was manageable, all material on tests is on slides, so know the slides inside out. My strategy was to make flashcards on all the slides and that was how I studied. He is definitely passionate about the topics and can explain them well in my opinion. He adds in interesting current biology topics like CRISPR and 3 parent families too.
He taught awfully, I fall behind a lot and couldn't really catch up on time, due to the massive amount of memorization. In overall he was so nice and kind but his teaching was only reading off the slides which I can do it myself.
So many of the major topics we discussed in lecture weren't on the exam or barely brushed over, while other random topics/one we only briefly touched on seemed to take priority. There were questions that weren't even in the lectures (which is what we're tested on) that were added to the exams. He goes insanely quickly through his slides in lecture.
Not approachable at all. Speaks super fast in his lectures. I took this class again with a different prof and my mark went up expedentionally. Avoid taking class with him at all costs. Tried to go into his office hours to see where I went wrong, and it was pretty much because I didn't use his words word for word in the exam.
talked very fast, hard to understand. went through slides fast before I could copy anything down. refused to post the lecture slides beforehand bc it'd cause ppl "skip more". exams focused on random tiny details covered in 1 sentence on slides instead of main concepts. very memorization heavy. but he did like to scale up to 63% avg which helped.
