A great professor! She's very understanding, helpful, and is willing to go out on her way with anyone! Tests and quizzes aren't that easy if you didn't study for since there was a quiz every week! VERY HELPFUL TOWARDS THE FINAL!

She's very nice and material is so easy to learn...if you study. Attendance is done by clickers. She never uses the book so don't waste your money. She is very willing to help you and encourages everyone to get extra help with her. definitely take her class if you need a bio.

I would definitely recommend this teacher and this course for all BIO/CHEM majors interested in taking BIO 2120. Ms. Bates really sets you up to learn a lot, and teaches you how to study for 2120. I had Ms. Bates for summer biology. I loved her and her class. I never thought I would enjoy biology, but she made all the difference. Pacing yourself is the key. All biology courses on campus are cumulative therefore keep up with the work. Her office door was always open to me and she is very useful. Take her!!!!

She was an amazing professor. She knew her stuff, & was always available to help. Lots of review sessions made available. Attendance required, book not used, but course pack has EVERYTHING you need to make an A on the tests as long as you study it. STUDY throughout the semester and go to her for help (tons of review sessions, and open office hours) and you will do fine. It's not an easy A, but you will learn so much if you try.

Don't sign up for this class unless you have a great interest in biology. Ms. Bates is a great teacher -- she knows the subject very well and is crystal clear on how she explains things. Super Strict! Don't buy book. Not understanding about absences, even if you have sick kids. Come to class everyday. Good idea to voice record explanations or write more notes than she puts on the board.

Bring the Clicker for every class. She go through the course-pack page by page, also she posts lots of helpful information on moodle, check them at-least twice a week. She gives so much help, that if you fail the class it is not because she didn?t perform her job above and beyond but because you decide not take advantage of the help she offered.

Her tests are very difficult even if you study. Cramming does not work but it's best if you sit in the lower half instead of at the back half. I sat towards the back and had difficulty, moved forward a bit and it was much more of an understanding class. USE MOODLE AND TAKE THE PRACTICE TESTS. Questions are often directly from practice tests.

I took her class to get a heads start in general biology. She is very sweet, but doesn't take crap! Be respectful and pay attention. You will learn a lot, BUT you will need to attend class and study days in advance for the exams. Exams are no joke, don't let your guard down! She is a good teacher and you learn your stuff but there is a lot of work and you need to come to class. There is a quiz every weekend online that is straight from the book and her tests are multiple choice, fill in, diagrams, and short answer. She does provide extra credit if you go to 10 SI sessions.

Ms. Bates is one of the best instructors I've ever had. She provides students with an abundance of resources on Moodle - if you utilize these resources and attend class regularly, then you'll easily do well in the course. She is helpful and intrested on how she can improve for her students, which impressed me. To get a good grade use the guided notes, read the assigned pages of the text book and go to LEAP with a chance to get extra credit. This class won't be hard if you do all of those things.

She has quizzes almost weekly, but they're really easy and online. She has reading guides that go with the textbook and lecture outlines for in class. The course isn't challenging to me, but to a person who doesn't like biology it would be. I recommend the LEAP sessions highly, as well as the pre and post assessment. Can get an A if you put in work

Ms Bates is very nice and super helpful. There are plenty of chances to succeed in her class especially if you put in the effort. I would highly recommend Ms Bates as an instructor for an introductory level bio class.

I loved Professor Bates! She is the head of the undergraduate biology department at UNCC and she definitely deserves it. She gives plenty of opportunities to get help if you are struggling and is always willing to back things up and explain more carefully. Also uses many different learning methods.

Amazing professor. The class is participation heavy, she uses poll everywhere as a means to count attendance and for extra credit. I would not recommend skipping this class, because attendance is taken randomly. There are several in class group assignments. She gives note in the form of fill-in-the-blank outlines. Textbook required for homework.

Mrs. Bates is a great biology professor. I am awful at anything science related but she was able to actually help me learn. She doesn't have many assignments so most of your grades are participation. As long as you show up and actively participate you will do well in her class. The only reason I did poorly was because I skipped a lot of classes.

You will have to pay attention and study, but she is very helpful and wants everyone to succeed. If you want an easy science, this isn't it but she's great if you'll like biology!

One big con- attendance is mandatory and its a large class so people are constantly talking. As someone with ADHD it is very hard to concentrate in classes like this which means I have to go to class and teach myself at home

Extremely organized, very straight-forward on what the expectations are for the exams she gives. Read her lectures and listen to them, fill out her post lecture worksheets and buy the study guide before the exam and you will be golden. Exams are always mostly MC, few matching, few short answer.. that's it. If you need extra help, she always will.

She gives weekly assessments with lockdown browser but there is no final exam which is great! Honestly easy A. Great professor. Her tests were lockdown to avoid switching tabs but not recorded or anything. Schedule was pretty nice as a TBA class. Simple group work and test due every Friday with a quiz on tuesdays. Highly recommend this teacher shes very good with giving feedback as well.

AMAZING! I had the best experience with Prof. Bates. She posted videos every week for the lecture with guided notes. Her tests were very self-explanatory. If you do not pass her class, there is truly something wrong with you. She is very sweet and is super understanding, especially with everything with COVID.

For the online class she does very well with assigning material with activities where you can actually learn things. She is very clear about what she wants a student to do throughout the semester. I would highly recommend!

Each week you have a set schedule of background quiz based on book reading, then a group activity to do followed by a reflection, lecture, test that is based on lecture. Pretty easy to get an A if you just do the guided notes and show up for your group work.

Professor Bates is an amazing professor. She truly cares about the success of her students. The work is not overwhelming but still requires the students to think critically about their answers. She is always available with any questions and responds to emails quickly. She grades quickly with great feedback on each assignment. Group work is easy.

This teacher is awesome. every assignment that isnt a quiz or a survey(she gives one of each of those a week) is a group project. She lets you choose your groups. Very clear about what will be on the quizzes in lectures which are easy to follow and keep up with. The final is another group project which is relatively easy if you do your research.

Great professor and pretty easy class. Mine was online and asynchronous therefore attendance was not a thing. Same style of learning and assignments every week with a quiz due on Wednesdays and test due that following Sunday.

This is a course I would recommend to anyone needing a science gen ed, but also to Biology majors like myself. BIO 2120 and 2130 are a lot, take this as a refresher beforehand! This course was not difficult as long as you watched lectures and did the work. I could have done w/o group meetings for an async course, but Bates is sweet & really cares!

There is a lot of work to do in this class, but it was asynchronous for me. She makes it easy to learn and really wants to help you learn about Biology because she is very passion about what she teaches. She is willing to help and she cares about her students! Professor Bates has a great class setup. Week by week the class is very similar, you will never be bombarded with work one week and none the next. She is very caring and goes the extra mile trying to improve her class based on the feedback she is given. If you pay attention in class then you'll have minimal work outside of class.

This professor's lectures were so good. She starts from very basic and does not just assume that you know basic science. I know a lot about Biology than ever before. I'd definitely take her again. She uses the Lockdown browser for Quizzes, but if you watch lecture you'll be good.

The class is not an necessarily an easy A as long as you do the readings, which is a textbook supplied for free, and do the group assignments you will be more than fine. There is a group aspect to the course so make sure you get along and have a clear team contract.

Bates is an amazing instructor. Even her TA is super bubbly and very helpful. There is no final bc she wants to reduce her students stress. Instead, there are topic assessments due at the end of each week which are SUPER easy. The average score of the assessments and a final project (SUPER EASY) make up most of your grade. TAKE THIS BIO CLASS!!!

I absolutely love Ms. Bates. This professor is very passionate about what she does. She lectures on the topics in detail and makes it easy to understand. She gives helpful feedback on group projects. There are several tests throughout this class, so make sure to read the textbook.

I learned more about biology than the past bio courses I've taken. Mrs. Bates was very caring and put forth effort to push back due dates and give us breaks through more stressful times. As a bio major I took BIOL2259 for fun but it ended up being a surprise favorite of mine. I had Bates for BIOL 1100 and she was fantastic, same with 2259. She's organized & a strong communicator of expectations. She was a microbiologist before teaching at UNCC so she has an interesting perspective in a class mainly meant for pre-nursing students!

Such an incredibly understanding and caring professor! Attendance is recorded on PollEverywhere but she does drop a few at the end of the semester. No final exam, just assessments at the end of each unit and the lowest exam score is dropped. No quizzes, just in-class assignments that you work on with your table group. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER COURSE!

Professor Bates was great for my Spring semester! Even though I had her for an 8:30 class, she made every lesson engaging and interesting enough to understand the information we were learning.

Mrs. Bates was an awesome teacher, and I enjoyed her class. The only thing you have to do outside of class are your quizzes and your "tests" are open notes. She does give a bunch of busy work, but you do it during class with the people you sit with. She drops lowest grades and gives a lot of in class assignments so it's easy to bring your grade up.

All tests and quizzes are done outside of class. Professor Bates is kind, caring, and offers great feedback. It isn't too difficult and I enjoyed the class and professor.

She's both my professor and adviser. She does absolutely amazing at both roles. If you get to chance to take her please do so, you won't regret it.

Professor Bates is awesome! She is super sweet and funny, in my opinion. She shows a lot of videos too so not just her talking and she also gives a day where she works with others instead of teaching. hw is not bad and she gives us an outline to follow in her lectures if you want to. She also always has her door open if you ever need to talk.

Professor Bates creates an engaging classroom with interactive lectures and group activities. The workload is manageable, and she offers great feedback. Unstuckstudy was a game-changer for my study prep.

She makes the material so easy to understand. If you're not great at bio I'd definitely recommend her classes. She's also very easy to reach outside of class!

Mrs. Bate's is a great professor and overall amazing person! She advocates for her students and is truly there for you! I personally struggle with biology but her encouragement helped me make it through. Go to her office hours and get to know her. Also, go to class! Her lectures are in depth but they help a lot! I LOVE HER!!! These reviews truly weren't lying. She has to be one of the BEST professors I've ever had. She's extremely sweet and you can tell that she cares a lot about our success. She doesn't try to trick us on exams and makes reading guides for each unit to help us. I'd take her a MILLION times over. Pay attention, engage + attend office hrs.

She is literally an ANGEL. Lectures make sense, she's so caring in class and over email, everything is explained clearly. Tests are very straightforward. Read the book and review class notes and you'll do great. Attendance is not really mandatory, but you will definitely do better if you go! One of my favorite professors!
