Prof. Davidson is great! She is funny and speaks clearly during her lectures and ensures that there is enough time for everyone to copy notes. Her midterm and exam were a breeze, and exactly what was on the review. You need to attend class and take notes because the slides are vague. The textbook helps but isn't necessary. The essays aren't too hard
Awesome prof, obvious that she puts a lot into structuring lectures that make research methods (usually a dry topic) interesting and inspirational. Gets to know the students and cares about their success. Assigns short interesting readings and assignments that are relevant. Going to lectures is important, plus she's funny and a good lecturer
Her lectures are amazing. Makes my other SOC classes seem terrible in comparison! Easy to get a good grade.
Very good prof. Her lectures and material made me want to go to class every week. Easy assignments and exams - If you put the time in, it is easy to get a good grade.
My all-time favourite professor! Wonderful lectures, the slides are too the point, so pay attention to what she says. Very insightful and clear. She repeats main points so you make sure to know them for exams. Super cool assignments usually and always makes lectures relatable to real life! I remember the concepts because of this.
Tonya Davison is the best professor out there in my opinion. She made sociology so interesting, not to mention the assignments were so much fun. She was always there to help if you need it. Very caring. Also, she points out which part of the textbook to look out for. I wish she was teaching the sociology classes for second year!! Love you tonya!!!
My grandmother was extremely sick and i approached Tonya to explain that i was potentially going to be out of province for the midterm if my grandmother passed away. Her response was "yeah well you should be here". Pretty rude if you ask me.
Tonya is great lecturer. She uses lots of current events and pop culture references. The textbook is free online. You can study for the exam in a day and pull off an 80 easily.
Tonya made me want to come to her lectures. She doesn't make you buy a textbook (its online!!) and despite the large size of the class, you really feel like you know her.
I love Prof Davidson. She is hilarious, likeable, and down-to-Earth. I really enjoyed the class content and she makes her lectures relevant to students' interests. You MUST attend her lectures as she gives examples and shows videos that will be on the midterm and exam. You should also keep up with the textbook readings. Easy A if you put in effort!
Extra credit options. Go to class, midterm/final is lecture based rather than textbook. Did I mention she uses an online textbook???? Nice lady, very funny. Take this class.... easy assignments & exams
Really nice and funny prof, exam was completely lecture based, online textbook so you don't need to spend extra money, really easy class.
Probably one of the worst profs ever. She encourages going to her office hours but always cancels & when you do get the chance she is rude, belittling & makes you feel dumb for not understanding. Such a picky grader, only gives you the mark if you write exactly what she said in class. Lectures are extremely unorganized & she always seems flustered.
Interesting class overall. Go to class and take notes if you want a good grade
she is really rude, worst prof ever.
extremely tough grader, she would not give you mark unless you write what she said in class... Do not recommend her, lectures are pretty boring comparing to SOCI1001
avoid her class if you want to pass.
I think it is too much burden for an elective subject, she goes so fast ; really hard to understand.
Easy class to get a good mark in if you go to lectures and take decent notes. Tests and assignments are all based off lectures. Textbook is free and online which is great!
She is the most arrogant, rude and tough prof I have ever had in my academic life, not helpful at all. avoid her class!
Not that bad !
Talks fast, tests are hard ! I recommend finding another instructor to take this class with.
Tonya Davidson is an amazing professor. I enjoyed her lectures so much that I switched my concentration from psychology to sociology. The lectures are very easy to follow and the midterms and assignments are not difficult to do well on if you attended the lectures.
Introductory sociology courses are always easy. Don't bother reading the textbook, just look at the parts she didn't go over in the lecture when you're studying. Tonya treats lectures as Socratic seminars, which makes for awkward conversations with the person next to you and doesn't help with your learning.
I loved Professor Davidson! She was hilarious and always talked about pop culture in her lectures. She made the boring theory aspects fun and her personality really shined through. Her marks were always fair and she answered all questions people had. Great Prof!
Amazing prof! Makes material easy to understand while relating it to examples we face on an everyday basis. Lectures aren't mandatory but interesting to attend. Put in the work, you will definetly see results.
I don't know where to start. Essays are marked so hard, youll find yourself loosing 0.5 marks for every grammar mistake you make (on essays that are worth 15 points to begin with). Tests are super hard and you have to be able to spew out lecture and textbook material precisley or you'll loose marks. DO NOT take! If you can, avoid it at all costs!
One of the actual best professors I have ever had. Lectures are so funny and relevant and when she teaches you can see that she actually cares about what she is teaching. Really easy to talk to in office hours, she may seem scary at first but she is so helpful and nice. Exams and papers are also easy, but go to class and take good notes.
don't really know how to express how amazing of a prof she is but I've considered just showing up to her other classes for fun.
I loved professor Davidson, she is hilarious and relates to current affairs. Attendance is not mandatory however, it will help you more for your midterms to go as Tonya often says 'this is really important, write this down'. Switched professors for next term so I could have her again. Grading is harsh, make sure to triple check your grammar.
Taking notes by hand? Don't even bother. She speaks quickly and is info-heavy, far beyond what's written on the slides. A lot of reading every week that you CANNOT blow off. And she decided her class was worth buying an ENTIRE EXTRA BOOK compared to other sections of this same exact course. Is the free online textbook not enough?!
Prof is condescending and unprofessional. Papers are graded heavy and tutorials are pointless (they should summarize the lecture, but DONT) but are worth 20%. If this class wasnt mandatory Id have dropped it right away.
Super easy class to pass if you are good at memorizing. Yeah, she talks fast but she gets through the lectures quick which is a nice bonus. Her lecture slides are detailed and straight to the point, read them and they'll be exactly what's on the midterm and exams.
She is very sweet and if you sit close to the front of the lecture then she will make an effort to get to know you during discussions. TA's grade the papers so most of your grade is up to them rather than Tonya. She talks fast!! She will say what is important but not always in the most clear way. But she does drop hints!
Is not available for her students. Leaves everything to the TAs and was very rude about answering questions regarding the syllabus. Her lectures are interesting but unless you go, the powerpoints will not make much sense.
Great prof, a lot of memorization but gives hints and study guides for tests. If you go to class and tutorials you'll be fine. Teaching style is great, she makes it entertaining . I switched profs for soci1002 just to be in her class again. Would recommend!
Great lectures! Doesnt require much
Tonya is the best!! She has great lectures and is so interesting to listen to. I rarely had to use the online textbook. Gives a variety of assignments and tests which gives you plenty of opportunities to boost your grade. Elaborates a lot off of her slides so I would recommend going to class. Also gives hints about important concepts for tests.
Tonya is so funny and nice! I had her for SOCI1001 and 1002. She explains things so well and is always ready and willing to help. She's also willing to go over test and assignment marks and possibly bump them up. Great prof!
Terrible prof, made me change my specialization from crim - sociology to crim psychology. I have had some better profs since then and am starting to enjoy sociology again, but she is so bad she ruined it for me for 3 years
She literally just wants you to pass. She even says it in the class, she makes things easier so nobody fails and gives extensions like it's water.
She was by far my favourite prof from first year. her lectures made it worth waking up at 8am for. professor davidson is where it's at, her lectures are honestly amazing and eye opening. she has a way with the content that makes everything so interesting and made me want to learn more
Took her class 4 years ago and I still think about it all the time. Incredible lectures and she is so passionate about what she teaches. I recommend her to all- this course changed me as a person. Exams are exactly what she says they'll be (I got 100 on every exam). Plus, she may boost your grade if the TA marked poorly!
I had Professor Davidson for 3 classes last year, and I was always so excited for class with her! She is so passionate about what she teaches and if you get to talking to her, she will give you so much help! Her class is really not that hard if you just learn the test info she gives out.
Can't say enough good things about Professor Davidson! Took SOCI 1001, 1002 and a first-year seminar. This professor really goes out of her way to see her students succeed. She is so open to helping students, all you need to do is ask!! Definitley recommend showing up to lectures and she does a great job connecting concepts to the real world!
SOCI 1001 was a decent class. Prof. Davidson was pretty good but I found some of the questions on her tests to be annoying. My TA was a tough grader but in the end I did okay and would probably take one of her courses again.
Always plugging book. Slides in lecture are not helpful for note taking. Class generally uninteresting.
Terrible class, worst professor I have ever seen. Openly political if you are on the right don't even bother trying to reason with her. If you don't say exactly what she wants you won't get the mark. She is not open to any opinion that is not her own so if you don't like regurgitating talking points you should avoid her at all costs.
Prof Davidson is a nice lady and I would not speak ill of her as a person, however her class was very difficult with very little clarification given for assignments. I think she would make a very good 3rd or 4th year but I would not recommend taking her for a first year.
Do not recommend her at all. Gives the stupidest most irrelevant assignments, tests are hard. SO MUCH READING. not a good prof
Prof. Davidson had some great lectures that were pretty interesting. However, the projects we did were quite confusing at times and some of the grading criteria were not very specific. Also, don't bother doing the readings.
The best prof I have ever had. Always makes lectures interesting, will provide feedback always, and has answered my emails within 10 minutes every time. Could not recommend her enough!
Super nice
Focused first few lectures on advertising her textbook which I bought and found extremely irrelevant throughout the semester. Failed to respond to multiple emails which I had sent to her regarding an extreme illness.
THE WORST PROFESSOR! HER TESTS ARE BRUTAL! SHE GIVES YOU 1 HOUR TO ANSWER 5 ESSAY QUESTIONS! she is so rude when you try to ask her for help! not considerate at all! gives you 40 concepts you have to know for a test and only tests you on 5. (sometimes she asks questions she never taught us the information for). DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER! RUN!!!!
Bad Prof, educates you more on her Starbucks order than on content. Rambles on about the same thing for so long. PowerPoint presentations are useless and her tests are brutal
I am not a fan of her teaching style. She tends to go on tangents. The portfolio assignments I found were useless. But for the midterms and paper, they were pretty easy and straight forward. She does plug her book quite a lot. It's a bit weird but I respect the hustle.
Horrible professor! All of her lectures are unreasonably wordy and tends to go off track quite often. If you don't do your assignments exactly as she wants them, it'll cost you a big chunk of your overall grade.
Professor would often have spontaneous group or individual presentations in middle of lec. Expects all students to participate. References her own work a lot. Readings are moderate in volume and in subject matter. Does help and extend some assignments. Readings are heavily used/referenced in lectures and expects that you do readings before class.
Her Lectures were exciting, but it's just her tests that I find too challenging. She gives over 30-40 terms to study, and you only use like 5-10 in the first test. She also got kind of snappy with me over the phone once after asking about something she didn't understand. She also throws her opinions into things and makes them seem like facts.
While I love sociology i did not enjoy the lectures. I do not like her teaching style and she can come off as condescending. The portfolio assignments were genuinely useless imo but the exams were okay. she keeps pushing her own textbook but I did not buy it and I survived just fine in the class.
Absolutely horrible, if you have the option to switch professors do it. Gives little to no details on how she wants assignments done and then you get a bad mark if you don't do it exactly how she wanted you to. She relates every lecture to her Starbucks coffee order, she's just overall a bad teacher so switch. lectures are boring and monotone
Hear me out: - Good teacher overall - Hard marker - Hardest SOCI class I've ever taken for real - If you can get someone else for a SOCI class, do it, the workload was crazy
I took both SOCI 1 & 2 and she made me do the SAME assignment 4 times. we had to do 2 portfolios each sem for SOCI1001 and although she gets paid over $100,000/year she was still too lazy to change the assignment. she didnt even change the title fo the assignment from 1001 to 1002. Doing this assignment 4x made me wanna kms.
Though lectures were long and had some tangents, I really enjoyed Tonya's teaching style. She covers a lot in the two hours we're in class, which I appreciate. Content is super interesting, and as someone who needs constant speaking to keep engaged, she was a great prof for me. The portfolios were tedious but not the worst thing. Tests weren't hard
by far the most boring class every. only 2 assignments and they are both the same thing. never take tonyas class
Tonya was a very boring and uninteresting professor both in her lectures and her assignments. I had to do the smae assignment four times. You didn't need to watch the lectures or read the textbook until the midterm, and even then the questions would be based on one comment she made in one lecture. Very frustrating and boring professor.
she is perfect
She's so in love with the content of her class, it's contagious. Her class made me specialize in sociology.
I should've listened to the comment section and picked a different prof
I loved both SOCI1001/1002 with prof. Davidson. Lectures were fun and engaging. I really enjoyed that she challenged students to look at society differently. Although both courses had the same assignments, these assignments had a purpose. They really challenged my sociological thinking, but you had to take them seriously. She is relatable and funny
Was somewhat condescending whenever my friends and I would ask a question and gave us useless assignments. I should've just taken Billy again. Also gave us an exam for no reason where we had multiple choice, short answer and an essay question (which included us manually using apa citation we had to memorize). Never taking her class again
This is the strangest sociology class ever. You have to memorize maps and dates for events only the prof thinks are important. Gives you study guides with 100 terms to only focus on 5-10 for the exams. If you have any other option for sociology avoid this class!
too be so honest she is my worst professor too date. she goes off on so many tangents its not even funny. her study guides are practically useless as they pretty much list everything. exams were pretty difficult and included ridiculous information like memorizing dates, geography, and citations. I dreaded going to her class every week.
Tonya is always pushing the paid textbook (free on Carleton web). Her assignments are creative and easy for a good mark. Her exams are pretty random and are very ticky tacky in terms of what she is looking for. It's important to not take anything she says personally, since she is passionate, but also gives a lot of information. A lot of variety
The worst Prof I've had in my time at Carleton. Course material isn't that difficult, lectures are okay, My friends and I all failed the exam with 12 and 15%. gives you a study guide with every word in the english language and expects you to memorize it all for only 5% of the study guide being actually tested on examinations. Worst Prof!
Most students in the class were engineering students trying to get credit there was a different professor at the beginning, which had to be the freest credit. now most time-consuming thing ever having weekly readings The midterm is atrocious she gives study guide which doesn't help when one of the TAs says that the average on the midterm was a fail
Tonya is pretty good. She's funny, caring, and wants you to pass. Her grading scheme is pretty fair. I never really paid attention to the lectures or did any of the readings. Cheesing the midterm and final is possible, as I did. Just yap, a lot. The essay assignments weren't that bad; one was more like a joke hw, while the other was five pages.
Is passionate and engaging. Grading was fair and clear. The M/C for the final sank a lot of our grades. Otherwise great class and prof!
The absolute worst prof. Literally thinking about how bad she is seven months after taking her class. To put it simply, she is nearly impossible to please, regardless of how hard you try.
very condescending, don't take this class.
It is impossible to do well in her class. You could study for 20 billion hours and it wouldn't matter. She will tell you the weekly quiz will be on a chapter in the textbook, then it will actually be all on the lecture that has nothing to do with the chapter. Don't waste your time, you might as well just not study and wing it.
lectures didnt matter at all it was all in the readings
There's a quiz after every lecture on that week's textbook chapter. Whenever I actually read the chapter, the quiz barely relates to it—but when I don't, it's all about that content. It feels impossible to prepare. She also refuses to share lecture slides after hearing some students used ChatGPT to make notes.
Worst class and worst prof ever had at carleton. The topics were so stupid lack common sense her quizzes were 10 questions end of every class so one wrong and you're already at an 80% these quzizes make up 50% of your grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. WORST CLASS EVER. WORST PROF EVER. She stopped posting her slides because "people were using chat"
Lots of reading and quizzes, the final exam was 25 short answer questions and 5 essay questions. Goodluck.
I wish her pay gets lower because then maybe she would yap less
Professor Davidson is my least favourite prof at Carleton so far. She talks incredibly fast, making her already boring lectures hard to follow. She is also hard to approach as she can be incredibly rude and dismissive. I said at least 15x every lecture that I hated this class and wanted to die. Save yourself, don't take her class.
I cannot stand this prof. One thing happens that she doesn't like and she loses it. She stopped posting her ridiculous lecture slides because ONE STUDENT used AI to make their notes. This is a 400 person lecture. The textbook is so boring and the weekly tests are impossible to study for. Needless to say, I'm screwed for this exam.
I find her very unfair on her teaching methods. For this semester's final exam we have no access to the lecture notes via brightspace and no study guide provided. I went to ask her for some advice on the exam and all she had to say was "I will not be entertaining this conversation at this time" DURING HER OFFICE HOURS.
never again. just no. worst prof ever, talks way to fast, not enough time to write down notes, quiz after every lecture, 5 essay questions on the final exam.... trust me, just dont.
Course is hard to take notes in and study for - Prof Davidson talks very fast and she refuses to post the slides because someone in the class used AI to summarize them. Very unfair for those who are doing their best to succeed in the class.
Prof Davidson is such an awful prof. Uses her own textbook that she wrote, weekly quizes that are 30% of your grade. Marks very hard. Would not take her class again if you pay me.
Her lecture pace was set to 2x speed but irl, and her tests actually made me question my life choices. This prof and her class literally deserves its own warning label. If there's one thing that I learned, its that I should've dropped this class—it felt like punishment for something I didn't do. You will leave this class with trauma, not knowledge
Prof Davidson is an OK prof. Her teaching style is rushed, and her criteria are unclear. 5 essay questions on the exam is too much. TAs are okay, some are good, some are not so much. I personally found her not that approachable, she likes her subject, just not her students.
She talks too fast, Weekly test, and she removed lecture slides off brightspace. The weekly test also at times didn't add up to the reading for that week.
Students are evaluated on their ability to recall menial details from her wildly subjective weekly readings, where she treats her radically woke worldview as fact. Consistently late showing up to her office hours. Dismisses questions, easily gets anxious/defensive. Clearly inexperienced as a prof. Can't imagine she does it for much longer. Avoid.
The content of the course is not that bad to understand, as most of the weekly topics relate to each other really well and is not bad to understand. The professor itself seems like a genuine nice person, however, you have to be very prepared to take notes as she is a very fast talker. There are weekly test worth 5% each.
Dreaded coming to her class every week. Don't get me wrong, what she teaches is interesting and pretty straight forward, but she doesn't post the lecture slides because ONE person used AI to literally help them with understanding her slides. The exam is made up of 5 essays (minimum 2 pages) and 25 short answer in 3 hours. Avoid her class.
No lecture slides online. Asked her for them and she told me that I should just take the notes. When I explained some disability stuff pertaining to why I may struggle, she said “thats a problem you'll have to overcome.” Would rather hit my head against a wall for 2 hrs than attend the 2 hr lectures again. Heed the warnings from everyone else.
Weekly quizzes on the textbook readings that are fairly easy if you read it but the final exam is the worst thing ever. It is multiple choice, PLUS short answers, PLUS 5 FULL ESSAYS. You have less than half an hour to complete each hand-written essay with no notes and you do not get them ahead of time. And her passing rate is only 33%. good luck
THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU VALUE UR LIFE
This is the worst class I have taken so far; she talks way too fast and is quite frankly boring. There are tests each week that barely refer to the readings, and her lectures don't even correlate to the readings enough to do them together. She isn't easy to approach and honestly isn't even helpful. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
do not recommend. lectures were taken off brightspace. there is no way to revisit the slides when studying. exam is 25 short answers and 5 essays in 3 hours. there is also a Great Lake exam question, not sure why we need to know the Great Lakes seeing how it's not a geography class but whatever. please do not take this class if you value your life!
If you have the option DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER. There's weekly quizzes that have nothing to do with the class and is only based off of the readings. She talks so fast and a lot of it has nothing to do with class. She does't share lecture notes, so you can't go back for studying or if you missed a class.
She gave no study guide on lectures, and we couldn't go back and review lectures because she had removed all the lecture slides from being viewed.
She is one of the most nasty people I have ever had the unfortunate pleasure of knowing. Extremely rude and condescending, purely hell bent on the misery of others and feeding off of their stress and misfortune. I genuinely believe that her purpose is to make students have the worst possible first year at Carleton from my experience.
Would not recommend taking her course. Very hard grader, your tests will be based off of chapters that you need to read, because the test will either be on lecture notes, or the reading, complete 50/50. She removed all lectures because a few students used ChatGPT, ruining the whole course for everyone. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE!
The tests were somewhat inconsistent per week. Her note-taking assignment seems unfair - the idea of the assignment was to grade you on the quality of your notes? Be prepared to read a lot, and make sure to memorize every work in the textbook.
Prof Davidson is an excellent lecturer and great mentor for first-year students. She has a tough love approach, ensuring your success without hand-holding. The syllabus clearly outlines class expectations, requirements, and prohibits AI use. This class provides essential general knowledge that everyone should take, regardless of their major.
"Essential general knowledge". Its a soc class. The exam should test students' understanding of foundational soc concepts. Not on if you can remember 5 symbols of the Sikh religion or how going to a cottage perpetuates white supremacy. The prof cannot separate her own world view from actual course material. Its unprofessional. Do better, Carleton.
She likes to ramble in her lectures and then remind herself to get back on track. Weekly test were 50/50 from lectures and readings. Exam was a struggle due to her removing lecture slides because of the use of AI on a note taking assignment. Take that in mind were being graded on our notes in the big 25. I also had a horrible TA.
She sucks lol, just spews nonesense all class. She got upset people used AI to sudy and take notes so she stopped posting her lessons in brightspace. The TA she has were good though. Not to mention she gave a sample exam that was NOTHING like the final exam. Not even joking not a single question was on even a simmilar topic. just dont take her
If you wanna hit rockbottom, take this class. She must be a mind reader since when you read the chapter, the weekly quiz has nothing to do with it, but when you don't, the quiz is about some random guy from 1864 & what he had for breakfast that morning.I would rather kick a wall with a toothpick under my big toe nail than take her class again. 0/10
Prof. Davidson does a good job showcase the different schools of thought in sociology through criticism of current topics in society. Weekly tests are completely from the readings, creating fair scope for tests. The assignment was the only odd choice, unclear grading metrics for notetaking assignment. Overall, a caring professor, very funny
Finals should have tested students' understanding on sociology concepts rather than forcing them to memory tiny details in the textbook! weekly quiz, understandable, but what's the point of the great lake and sikh religion?! not everything is common knowledge WHEN her students come from different backgrounds and may not pay attention to all of it!
very strict and unhelpful. her TA's are worse. they will make you feel so stupid and like they are so much better than you. dropped mostly because of the TA.
Horrible Horrible. This prof and her TA are the worst people I have ever met. I dreaded her class every week and for this whole semester I was miserable because of her and her TA which in every DG after class the TA was a mean girl that still lives in high school. It is useless when the prof doesn't know how to be an actual human being. Don't take.
There are weekly quizzes, each worth 5% of your mark. I found them hard. She removed slides toward the end of the semester due to AI use, as she's strict about not being recorded or having her slides or notes be put into AI. She's attentive to students in her office hours. Her lectures are good, though she speaks very quickly.
I don't know where to begin with this course. The quizzes were completely incoherent and counted for 50% of the final grade. She knows she talks faster than Lewis Hamilton drives, she still took away our access to materials for studying. She loves to demonize AI; it's kind of the public enemy in this course. Take if you want, you could get worse.
Didn't love but didn't hate. Lectures fun & engaging but very heavy. In-person quizzes every week (make up 50%) but were reasonable once you knew what she tested on. Textbook is a MUST. Her grading is fair & work was okay. Gave a practice quiz for the exam but NOTHING of it was actually on the exam except for like 2 questions out of 30. She's okay.
Introduced and covered the basic concepts of Sociology. Genuinely a good professor, and I would highly recommend her class.
