The main problem is that she doesn't know the materials. She constantly provide the class with the wrong information and would get made if someone try to correct her or ask about it. The lectures are very messy and confusing. Be prepare to teach yourself.
This class was extremely difficult because she doesn't explain anything so you have to rely heavily on the textbook to learn everything. This might be due to her lack of knowledge in the subject. The only good thing is the redemption but that was very randomly done.
Her teaching style was not good. The notes we we got were NOT enough to do well on the test. She did not know the material herself. When you asked her a question, she would just read off a script she read off in class. Dont Take!
She did not seem to know/understand microbiology very well so she was unable to teach it correctly. She was unable to answer questions on very basic concepts so you are left learning everything by yourself. The study guides are very long but help very little with preparation for the exams.
The subject is very interesting but the class was made very confusing because she did not seem to know what she was talking about. Her lectures did not make any sense and were very difficult to follow. The exams were very hard because you never know what to focus on.
Most people do not like her teaching methods, but I did. She does know what she is talking about and when I had questions she would repeat what she said in class, but would take time to explain it so I understood. She has very high standards and expectations. I would take her again.
Ms. G. A real gem. She is a tough grader, and she knows her stuff. On the other hand, she is super nice and caring. Just show her some respect and actually put in some effort. And oh yeah she doesn't care who your momma and daddy are, how much money you have, what sorority you're in, nothing. So be cool with her, and she will be cool with you.
Took this course a few semesters ago and it was awful. She doesnt know anything about microbiology and often presented the class with the wrong information. A lot of the stuffs that she taught did not match up with the textbook and other classes. VERY unhelpful, rude and did not welcome questions from students.
Her lectures were incomprehensible because she would read from a few sheets of papers with tons of mistakes and would not explain anything. She has no respect for the class and would talk down on the class at every given opportunity. If you want to lose IQ and be insulted on a daily basis, feel free to take her.
I am not sure why all the ugly. At first I didn't like her either until I actually went to her office and got help. She was always available and was happy to explain what I didn't understand. I was going to drop but she convinced me to stay. Glad I did because her class has helped me make an A in upper level bio class. You will HAVE to study!
SO BAD. Do not take her!!!! She does not know the material at all. You ask her a question and she jsut reads the script. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER
Gauna is a pretty terrible teacher but this class is not the worst. You just have to double check the notes that she gives because she often presents the class with the incorrect information. This is probably due to her weak knowledge in the subject. I did find the materials to be interesting but she is a disappointing teacher for the class.
This class was a nightmare. She has a very negative, rude and unfriendly attitude. During lectures, she would teach the wrong information on a daily basis (even the most basic concepts). After taking my other classes, I found out that half of the stuffs that she taught are incorrect and I have to go back and relearn it. Horrible.
She doesn't know much about biology to begin with so there are tons of mistakes in the notes. You have to read the textbook very thoroughly because that is pretty much the main source for studying since lectures are filled with inaccurate stuffs. I regret taking the class that semester because I didn't learn anything.
The saddest part about this class was that the textbook is your teacher because she didn't teach anything correctly. Studying was difficult because she taught the wrong things on multiple occasions. Some of the things that she taught incorrectly were appalling because they were simple biology facts.
She cant teach. She read off a poorly constructed script in lectures and can't relate things to allow the class to understand the materials. She didnt know most of the information that she tested us on. Definitely never taking again.
Very difficult class to study for because she seldomly provides the correct information. You have to go back and find the mistakes in notes before you can actually study the materials which takes a lot of time. On top of that, she is very condescending and unhelpful whenever you have questions.
I am not sure what everyone else has experienced but this class was great! She was accessible outside of class every day. She gave bonus points and the group case study was so much fun! I would recommend her to anyone. Just remember it is a summer class and it does require work!
I learned so much in this class. I didn't find that she didn't know what she was talking about. I took this class in another semester and it was the same information. We did a group project that was pretty cool and we learned a lot. I like that she relates micro to the medical field. By far one of the best classes I have taken at LSU.
Find a better teacher. Took this online over summer and she drove from bunkie to baton rouge everyday, meaning she was late and also babysat her granddaughter majority of the time who screamed constantly. Could never figure out how to give us the information correctly and her tests included things we never discussed. Also not a very nice lady.
Horrendous teacher who is very condescending. Her lectures and notes contain a lot of errors. She didn't present the materials in a clear way. Luckily, I had a good teacher for intro biology before this; otherwise, this class would have been a struggle.
Lectures you have to pay constant attention and write fast. Office hours were extremely helpful; you can't just memorize you have to be able to do application questions. Prepare to study constantly.
This was a great class. I saw the review about being late and her granddaughter. Her granddaughter was there 3 times and she did not scream. It was online so I am sure she saw a lot of our stuff too! Also, she was never late. I did not find a lot of errors actually. Her office hours were good and if you don't understand then you should go to them!!
Her teaching is very mediocre. She clearly doesnt know the course content. At time, it felt like I knew the materials better than her. The class is hard because she constantly gives you the wrong information and you have to go back to fact check with the book before studying. Im so glad I dont have to take her or this class again.
I appreciated all of the extra credit opportunities given. I got 20 points added to my final that we got to use our notes on. She told us REPEATEDLY in class that she used more than one source so there may be things that the book was different on. She had office hours every day and if she couldn't make a time she would reschedule.
I was worried about taking Dr. Gauna because of what I had heard, but she is nothing like I was told. Her lectures were clear although I would have liked a power point. Final was open notes and she gave the discussion question two weeks in advance. The case study was pretty cool and good opportunity for extra credit. You have to work!
For an online class, this was horrible. She struggled to explain a lot of difficult concepts and there were numerous errors in her lectures. Like many have said below, she doesnt know the materials (you can tell from her lectures) and can be very rude at time. The lab was much more interesting and that was taught by a different teacher.
I hate the negative comments. Maybe you feel that way because you didn't want to have to work for the class. She is accessible outside of class. I didn't see very many people take advantage of that. I did and I did well. If you don't understand the material, it isn't because she doesn't know it. It is because you didn't bother to learn it!
She clearly doesn't know the materials very well but she tries to teach a lot of difficult concepts in the subject which is not a good combination. Her class does not help with preparation for other biol classes because there are a lot of wrong and confusing information in her notes. I should have taken this class with a different teacher.
She does a terrible job of presenting the materials. Her lecture notes are over the place and look like bunch of scribble scrabbles. I was looking forward to taking this class but it turns out to be very uninteresting and hard.
We rarely start class on time and she doesn't teach much during lectures. On some topics, it seems like she doesn't know what she is talking about. The notes are very sloppy and difficult to follow. I just read the textbook and made my own notes.
Ms. Gauna is late to almost every class and seems very unprepared. Lectures have no structure or purpose except for the attendance quiz. Here notes are very disconnected, confusing and contain a lot of inaccurate information. I teach myself like 90% of the information I learn in this class.
On day 1, she emphasized the importance of attendance, but she never comes to class on time. Her lectures are disorganized and she often skips over a lot of important sections without explaining it and then expect us to know it. The notes are often a list of words that she would write out and then read from a script without teaching the material.
In lecture, she would hand write a list of words and then read from a paper that she types up at the speed of light. After each class, I have to spend many hours to reorganize the notes and fix the mistakes in her notes before I can understand what she taught in class. I have never seen a teacher who teaches so much incorrect information.
Half of the time she is late to class. Sometime we didn't even have class at all. Her lectures are hard to follow and all over the place with a lot of mistakes. This class is a mess and it is one of the most disorganized classes I've ever taken.
Gauna is not a very good teacher. She teaches a lot of wrong information on a daily basis and her notes contradict a lot with other classes. On top of that, she doesn't use any visuals, PowerPoint or online platform which makes it difficult to understand and learn the materials.
Micro is difficult no matter the professor you have. Tonya did everything in her power to help us. Her office hours stated they were only for an hour, but you could come in at any time and she was there. Gave multiple modes of learning, including visual, audio, and tactile. If she did not know the answer, she looked for you until she did. Take her
The exams were hard because she would ask questions on things that she never taught or that she taught very incorrectly. The group project was a complete waste of time and seem like busy work. I learn almost nothing from her lectures and all my learning came from reading the textbook.
Lectures were confusing, unorganized and unclear because she taught a lot of wrong concepts/information. She also cancelled class very randomly and then tried to rush through the materials at the end of semester which made it very difficult to learn anything. Definitely the worst teacher I've taken in college.
Some things done were a big waste of time. The group project would have been nice had it been organized differently. I absolutely hated the way she does her notes and lectures. No visuals, talks way too fast and would have to spend hours re-organizing my notes for her 30 minute lectures. Kind of seemed like she didnt want to teach us.
She was NEVER late. We got bonus because we were there. Maybe you should have been on time. How many of you went and asked for help? My guess is none. You would rather have it spoon fed then to actually work for it. I thoroughly enjoyed this class!!! Hands down top 5 at LSU.
Her class has absolutely no organization and she doesn't seem to know the materials at all to teach it clearly. In class, she couldn't answer most of the questions that were asked and I found tons of mistakes in her notes while studying the materials. She also wasted a lot of lecture time talking about things that have no to do with the course.
I did not find a lot of errors in her teaching. In fact, she related everything to our lives as humans. I learned more about microbiology in this class than I did with another professor. I dont know what others want from her but her exams were open book and note and were fair. Lots of extra credit. Enjoyed!!
Gauna doesn't know much so she doesn't expect much. Her tests are not hard if you understand the textbook. The challenge is that her notes are saturated with false information and she cancels class a lot so we didn't learn much in lecture. Not a good teacher to take if you want to learn the information but one of the easier teacher for micro.
Ms. Gauna seems like a nice person but this class was poorly taught. I started to study for the MCAT after the class ended and I found a lot of incorrect information in her lecture notes. I think I have to study everything from the beginning again. Still, it was an easy class and she gave a lot of bonus points.
I don't think she knows the content very well. In class, she had to constantly look up the answers for most of the questions. Whenever she tried to explain something, it got even more confusing. The notes were very messy and the lectures were unorganized. Half of the final exams included information that were not covered in class.
This woman canceled class one time because of a family emergency. WOW!! I guess she is not allowed to be human. I also studied for the MCAT using her notes and I did not find much discrepancy. How can you say she had errors but then say know the textbook? Her lectures came from the book. It is a great class!!
Awesome class! This lady is hilarious and it was never a dull moment in class. I wish she used a powerpoint for lecture, but she did record every lecture and made it clear it was our responsibility. I liked the flipped classroom. The case study was really cool too. Way different than other boring science classes.
Having taken this class with two other professors on campus she is hands down the best. Very relatable and makes the class that way. Tests are hard but she tells you straight up and they were open notes and book. Maybe the others didn't really read the book with her lecture because if I had a question I could find the info in the book. Great!
On average, there are 10-15 mistakes in each of her lecture. Make sure you fix those errors in the lecture notes before studying; otherwise, you end up learning the wrong information. That is the biggest challenge of this class. Her tests very easy and require minimal effort.
If she isn't late to class or canceling class, she would spend a lot of class time discussing irrelevant thing. The worst part is that she doesn't seem to know most of the information that she tested us on. Her lack of preparation and knowledge on the subject made the class unnecessary difficult.
This class was poorly organized. Most of the class lectures were pointless and did not help with preparation for the exams. The group project was time consuming and boring. She expects you to know a lot of things that she doesn't even know. For the most part, this is a self-taught class.
If you are one of those students that requires a powerpoint to take notes this is not your class. The complaining that her lectures are pointless is because they don't know how to take notes. She was never late and cancelled class ONE time due to a family emergency. It was a great class and I learned tons because her lectures were awesome!!
I made a C+ but it is because I did not do the work in the class. the case study was awesome and she gave us time to work in our groups in class instead of outside. Her lectures were recorded and I can admit I did not listen to them like I should. you cannot cram for her tests!! she was very accessible outside of class
Awesome extra credit that gets added to exam. I really liked the flipped classroom and the fact that I could do lectures on my own. Case study grade was an exam and EASY A!! Tests are hard so you better be prepared, but she does follow the book. Not sure why others say she didn't because I followed just fine.
Despite all the complaints hands down one of the best. Her lectures could be a little more organized but she does follow the book. Tests cover a lot of material you have to study. She is one of the nicest people I have ever met and she goes out of her way to help the students.
I made a D+ but i just took this again this semester and am failing. I thought Dr. Gauna was tough but she really did make sure we knew what was what. I made the grade because i did not do what i was suppose to do. I will be retaking her in the summer and cant wait!
Took this class last summer and she was definitely not a good teacher as a lot of things were taught very wrong. However, her class was very easy. It was my second time taking the class and she was the easier teacher out of the two. Exams were open book and I didn't study much but still did very well. She was also kind of funny.
If you read the book, her lecture is almost word for word so I dont get the wrong information. Case study is cool. Lots of extra credit opportunity. Easy to talk to. Great class!
She seems kind of lazy. In class, she just assigns busy work or we just sat around and do nothing. Lectures seem very nonproductive. The recorded lectures are very confusing because she just read through the materials super fast without connecting anything so you have no idea what is going on.
The lectures are basically her office hours since she doesn't teach during lectures. She doesn't appear to know the materials well at all because the recorded lecture videos are very messy and contain factually incorrect information. You have to rely on the textbook to study everything. The lack of visual aid also make it difficult to study.
The textbook is by far the best source of studying for this class. Her lectures are very unorganized, confusing and contain a lot of inaccurate information.
She reads randomly from different parts of the textbook in lectures without explaining anything. She couldn't answer most of the questions or would answer them very incorrectly. The materials are not hard if you read the textbook which explains things so much better than her lectures. Like many of the reviews below, she doesn't know the materials.
She does a terrible job of presenting the materials. The lectures are hard to follow because she teaches a lot of wrong information and there is absolutely no flow in the information which makes it hard to follow or understand the materials. Not a good class to take if you actually want to learn the content.
This class is very poorly taught. Her lectures are unhelpful because they are all over the place with a lot of plainly wrong information. In some classes, she didn't teach anything. I learn the materials through reading the textbook. She does give a lot of bonus points that can bump you up a letter grade even if you don't do well on the exam.
Despite the horrible reviews, I personally appreciate Ms. Tonyas time and effort. It is clear that she wants her students to succeed in this course. If you go to her office hours, she will be more than happy to help in any way she can. This class is hard but you just have to put the effort in. She is a person too and is trying her best to help!
While Ms. Gauna lacks the knowledge in the subject and often teaches us the wrong information on a daily basis, she gives A TON of extra credits which helps. Still, I would much prefer actually learning the materials.
You might not like the way she does notes but every teacher is different. She's not hard-the class is. She gives you everything you need, her stuff comes from the book, big easy group project, gives bonus and redemption, and her door is open any time you need her.
Every bad review you read is because the class was taken in the summer and people couldn't handle what they signed up for. She gives you everything you need and she is there to talk any time you need her. This is a hard class in general. If you need help, talk to her and you will suceed.
don't listen tot he reviews that say she doesn't know anything. thats simply not true. This woman knows so much and has so much medical experiance. People are blamiong her for the class being hard. The subject will always be hard...esp when shes only teaching it in the summer. She cares so much and her door is always open. great person. great teach
She teaches so much misinformation (even on simple biology facts). The exams are hard because she doesn't teach the materials correctly. She would randomly get upset for no reason or when someone asks her a question that she doesn't know the answer to (which happens a lot). Terrible and would never take again.
To sum it up: class is hard, not her. Ppl cant take the intensity of summer classes and blame her. She knows SO much. ppl kept saying that can't teach bc it sounded cool. Her note taking style is different but all you need is the book. she cares ab her students more than any teacher. i love this woman
I would reccomend niot taking the class in the summer. I can promise you all the bad ratings are bc they are taking a HARD class in the summer (only a few weeks) and they couldnt do it and said it was bc of the teacher. her door is open 24/7. no other teacher does this or cares as much as her. Many people got A's in the class. take her
If you notice the similarities in the 5/5 reviews posted recently, I guarantee they are by a student that Tonya cried to in her office because this woman is an emotional rollercoaster. Her behavior in the classroom is inappropriate, unprofessional, and reinforces misogyny in STEM. She has no command of the subject matter or organizational skills.
I get stuff happens in peoples' lives but there is no need to bring all of that to class and spend class time talking about why you had to cancel class last semester and what not. Read the book and you should do good, does give a lot of extra credit and project was easy but for the tests be ready to spend time reading the book and watching youtube
Ms. Tonya was at her office hours everyday to answer questions and to help us. She did give bonus credit so I cannot be mad for that. She did have a teaching style I was not used to but once I worked with it, it helped me to understand the material. Everything about this class was easy. The test were hard but if you study then you will do great
Understand that bio 2051 is NOT easy. Ms.Gauna is the MOST COMPASSIONATE professor I have ever taken. She gives SO MUCH bonus as well as REDEMPTION on exams. Name another teacher that does that... ill wait. She teaches to get you to apply the info to the real world. A teaching technique I wish others used. She's ALWAYS available. TAKE HER class!!!!
Misogeny?? Wow! I gave a 5 and never went to her office so she never cried to me. Thus is the only class I feel I actually learned something. Different lecture style but the book helps. Used personal experiences to be relatable not unprofessional wish she taught other classes.
Prof. Gauna undoubtedly knows her stuff. She has a very particular way of teaching so chances are you'll have to figure a new way to study the material. She will help you with these strategies though and really cares that you go through the course having learned something. Definitely go to her office hours.
This is a hard class. Mrs. G has a style of teaching that many people are not used to, which can make it even harder. Tests are extremely difficult even after hours of studying and reading the book. But she does care about her students and will help you succeed. If you really dedicate yourself, you will do well and learn a lot about microbiology.
The last reviewer probably didn't make a B and r in their feels. She gave is a group final today and people still wanna b fake Hard class great teach. The peeps giving out 1 r giving out the wrong info. She taught STRAIGHT from book if u bother to read. My time wasn't wasted so speak for urself take the class
Get ready to teach yourself. Her tests are not based around her lecture even tho she says they are. She does give a ton of bonus and go to office hours so that you can make sure your tests are correct. Ask for the answer key to exams to compare. She gives bonus to students she likes so get on her good side. I wouldn't take this class again.
Horrendous teaching but she gives a lot of bonus points. Honestly, this class has been a complete train wreck. I learn almost nothing from her lectures because she teaches a bunch of false information. I'm so glad the class is over and I hope to never have to take her for another class again in the future.
she is not a horrendous teacher just has a different style. i had to figure out a new way to study you do teach urself alot of the material bonus is great she is a very kind person and really cares about students she has great office hours and u should use them
This course is not that bad. Professor Gauna gives you all the information you need. Reading the book can help fill in gaps from lecture. She is very empathetic towards her students. She has a very unique teaching style, feels like being back in highscool. Bottom line, this class is very doable, even for an A or B. There is no homework.
This professor is extremely unprofessional. I had to teach myself and she affected my mental health tremendously. All of the positive comments look relatively the same so please strive to find a way to manage if you do take this class. Watch youtube videos on what she says in class. Teach yourself EVERYTHING in the book to do good. Good luck
I left this class more confused than ever. She skipped over a lot of important concepts (probably because she doesn't know them) and half of the materials that she taught were factually incorrect. The grading was very confusing and inconsistent. If you truly want to learn microbiology, take a different teacher.
She taught half of materials incorrectly. Extremely rude if you have questions and spent most of class time talking about her nursing career instead of teaching. At the end of the semester, she didn't care anymore and let us took the final exam in groups. For the most part, this class was a complete joke.
This class is very easy and requires very little effort. She gives a massive amount of bonus points and you can take the final exam in groups. I barely study and still did extremely well.
I took this class a few years ago and on the first day, she taught us that plants are prokaryotes and spent several minutes arguing with the class that she was right. She taught the wrong concepts the whole semester. It's disappointing that a college teacher doesn't know simple biology facts. I had to relearn the materials after the semester ended.
