Dr Kachur is amazing, she made lectures really enjoyable. For midterm and final memorize her notes and make sure you understand concepts. Great prof for biol 107.
Amazing prof, made a fairly dry course actually enjoyable. Don't underestimate the seemingly-easy material, her tests are quite difficult and she tests minute details. She is funny, very easy to understand and my new favourite prof. No textbook needed!
Torah is a fantastic lecturer. With that said, her exams are sent from hell. She is a very hard tester, and she really expects a lot from her students. She graded the assignments very harshly as well. If you take her class, you will learn a lot and enjoy yourself in lectures, but be warned about her exams.
Solid prof choice for BIOL107! She made cell biology kind of easy to understand, explained stuff clearly and tells you directly what to expect from the exams. So although her exams are tough, if you listened to all of what she said in class you'll definitely pass.
Torah is an amazing prof! She gives really good notes but you have to go to class to get them. She is also really clear on what is on the exams and has time to review at the end of the semester. Need to study and understand the content, not just memorize. And she tells funny stories during class, like a real human being not just a prof.
Absolutely ridiculous exams. She puts her self on this pedestal and asks questions that have little relevance to actual understanding and more to do with process of elimination. I found her along with her exams to reflect some sort of arrogance she had with herself. I will say that she is a good teacher, but her exams make little sense.
She was an entertaining professor but her tests were extremely difficult. She tests many concepts in exams we were not taught directly and her multiple choice is quite hard. No notes are posted and the active learning component is really hard, especially if you do not have any friends in class.
As a lecturer Torah was fine, she spoke clearly and her notes were decent. She does hand written notes, but I personally prefer ppts were you can make your own notes. I found the written portion of her final quite challenging and beyond the scope of what we were taught, though some were from the problem sets. She expected too much for a 200 course
I had Torah Kachur for Bio 107in my first year and she is genuinely the best prof I've had to this day. As much as first year is sometimes a nightmare to figure out, she does her best to give you all the resources you need to succeed and have fun while doing it. Her tests were very fair and she will not test you on anything not covered in class
She likes her job and it is reflected in her teaching! Going into her class last year I was super scared because everyone was saying her exams were super hard but in all honesty, if you study they aren't. GO TO CLASS she gives midterm and final question hints. She will only ever test you on lecture material!
For me, torahs teaching style was the most effective technique! She makes notes together w the students which means she only tests on stuff she discusses/writes. Until now I can still remember the concepts she taught which is really helpful in higher biology classes.
Torah gives really interesting lectures with funny stories and she's super awesome to listen too. You have to come to class to get the notes and she only tests on lecture material, but her exams are super hard and you need to be able to connect different topics and extrapolate for her exams. Her personality is so worth it though
unpopular opinion but i wasn't much of a fan of torah's lecture notes. you have to be really efficient in making your own notes in order to do well in her class. her tests are EXTREMELY difficult and trust me, you cant rely on just her notes to get a fair mark of her tests.
GOOD LUCK FOLKS! awesome personality but her tests are brutal!! She expects way too much for a first year biology class and she said in class one day "if you memorize word for word all my notes you should get about a 50%" all her questions are way more advanced than her notes and she expects you to go above and beyond her lectures on the tests.
I'm not a science student, but I loved my bio class because of Torah! I would definitely suggest taking her class, but you have to go to class to get the notes. Lectures were great and she always has funny stories to go along with the content.
Dr. T is super funny and engaging. Her style of notes worked for me because writing things down helped me to remember them, but you have to come to class to get the notes. Midterm was hard but I'd say it's worth it! She's got a great teaching personality and also answers questions really well
She is over the top and very annoying. Tries a little too hard to relate. Expects you to know the weirdest of details from her notes which she delivers in a lecture that feels more like a high school pep rally. thinks she knows everything bio just because she teaches MCAT classes but she doesn't and tests in MCAT style but just makes it confusing!
Tests are extremely hard. After you study and feel like you know stuff, you do her test and have so little idea of what she's asking. The questions seem above and beyond what you've actually learned. She's kind of funny, but her lectures are fairly boring since its just writing. I'd be fine with boring lectures if the tests weren't horrible. AVOID
She's nice and funny but her tests are SO HARD.... you have to come to class to get the notes but the tests are basically nothing like them. She expects you to extend your knowledge way beyond what I think is appropriate for a first year class. Great prof, hard class.
She makes bio so interesting and her lectures are so engaging. you have to come to class to get her notes, so you won't do well on the test if you don't. Her exams are hard because they're application based, but if you study and understand the content you will be fine. She's really passionate about bio and its shown in her teaching.
TBH I was most excited for Bio107 but walked away disappointed. Yes she is good at speaking, but I didn't take much from the class. She thinks she's a really good teacher and writes really HARD tests to compensate thinking that she's taught the material well when really her teaching didn't prepare you for the exam except saying which graphs 2 know
Torah has really great lectures that aren't super dry or boring making them bearable to listen. She provides many hints throughout them of what will be on the midterm / final, however her tests are very difficult with questions that integrate multiple lectures. Recommend her but be prepared to study extra hard for her exams.
Torah was my favourite prof this year! Her lectures were fun and her enthusiasm for the class made it easy to learn. Her tests are fair but a lot of the questions are centered around things she says in class, if you attend the lectures you will do fine.
Tests were just absurd. No, they didn't really require you to remember specific details. No, they weren't even application problems. Her multiple choice literally requires you to GUESS, make assumptions, and then find the answer based on process of elimination.
She was a great lecturer that was passionate and aimed to keep the content heavy lectures entertaining, She does post notes online so attendance or having a friend in the class is necessary. Overall I found her tests fair
She's a great teacher. Her lectures are very useful, and if you plan on passing, they're a must. Her tests are really hard though; they consist of "choose the best answer" a lot of the time. But she's a great teacher, and a fair marker.
I don't know why people say her exams are difficult. She tells you exactly.. EXACTLY what is going to be on the exams and if you attend lectures, she straight up gives answers too. There are 2 online quizzes that are 4% each and are easy marks. Just pay attention in lecture and full understand each lecture and its an A.
She admits herself that her tests are difficult. As long as you show up to lectures and put in the effort after class you'll do fine. Definitely an interesting lecturer and it is worth showing up to lectures.
Amazing prof and amazing notes but you have to be in class to get them
Torah was an amazing prof, and made it easy to get comfortable with university. She has her own notes that you work through and fill out together, so you have to go to class. Her tests werent very difficult, just aggravating. There were lots "Choose the best answer" questions, and some were tough, but it really tests your knowledge.
Torah is a great prof! She is very outgoing and is passionate about what she teaches. She tests only based off of her lecture notes and what she says in class. Her notes aren't posted so make sure you go to class! Although her tests are difficult, you'll be fine as long as you go to class and put in the time and effort to study.
Sometimes felt like she was pushing her humor a little too much, would have rather just been taught the material more in depth. Her tests were easy to do okay on, but very hard to do really well on. Difficult concepts, a lot to learn, but she does her best to teach it as well as she can. On the plus side, she didn't use the textbook at all!!
I personally loved her lectures - it was my favourite class of my semester. She gives very clear notes (if you go to class) and gives hints as to what is emphasized in exams. She is very passionate about what she teaches and it definitely shows. As long as you apply yourself in this class you'll be fine.
She is so passionate about what she teaches and it shows - her lectures are very engaging and she takes and answers questions very well. Her exams are not simple regurgitation - you need to be able to apply what you learn (which is a good skill to have anyway). Her notes are the best I've seen, but she doesn't post them so you need to attend class
Torah is passionate, and lecture's alone are good. Otherwise I found her uncaring, and sometimes rude. She once didn't show up to an office hour I booked with her so I waited and she didn't come. BIOL 201 assignments are very hard. Maybe for some classes she's good, but specifically BIOL 201, avoid her. Hardest I've ever worked for a B+
She is a great person and very approachable, but I don't understand why she wants her students to fail badly! Her exams are the worst and the assignments were just a waste of time you could spend one hour or one week to solve them and you'll still get a low grade. Unless you're the type of student who enjoys torture, don't take her class!
I've taken BIOL107 with her before and I really enjoyed it. I don't quite know what happened with her in this course. Her pacing of material was awful, she was inaccessible outside of class, arrogant, her test poorly written, and her feedback was non-existent. She insisted on using some outside message board for questions that didn't work for me.
I don't know why everyone hates on Torah. She for sure tests different than other bio profs (not just straight memorization), but I really enjoyed her lectures. As for the comments about her being arrogant or rude, I have never found that. I really enjoyed her class.
This will probably be downvoted. But I really like Torah, I think she is a solid prof. I did not do well in her class lol, but that wasn't because of the assignments or ard tests, its because the course is nothing like any bio course in the first year. Its a hard course with a great prof.
Her tests are so unfair and hard. even if you understand the material and studied everything you'll still end up being confused with her exams. Her lectures are fine but her tests do not match. I did do good in the course but I would never take her again.
Torah is very straight to the point and really helpful at answering any questions. The assignments were tough, mostly because questions out of 5 marks were usually all or none. The midterm and the final SA were mainly problem solving based questions, Torah likes those a lot (especially western blots). The course itself is really interesting.
She clearly has a passion for the subject, but the format of her lecture (copying whatever she writes) doesn't really help with understanding material. It would be better if the material was presented and provided and then explained/elaborated. The practice exam she provided was not representative of the exam question format she used.
Her lectures consisted of just writing down a bunch of facts without much explanation of them. The flow of topics didnt make sense either. Shes obsessed with STIs and breast milk. She told us to focus on pathogen profiles but that didnt actually matter on her midterm. I loved her 107 lecture but found this lecture awful.
Low class average, very tricky and tough exams. Curved but only to a B-. Her lectures are very engaging and definitely helps to understand. You must go because ehse has fill in he blank notes and you cannot get them from her more than 3 times in the year
This class was responsible for 90% of my stress last semester. I can't think of a nice word to describe the way she taught the class! Her assignments were graded horribly and the exam questions didn't make any sense and on top of all that, she just makes fun of you if you ask any questions because she expects all her students to be like her.
Strongly recommend this prof especially to any first years out there. Torah's lectures are incredibly engaging and she WILL make you totally interested and excited about all the topics you are learning. Torah's tests tend to reward effort so do what she tells you to do and listen to all of her tips in class. Easy A but you MUST put in the work.
Torah is amazing! She really is a great professor all around and would be beneficial for a lot of first-year students because she seems more like high school teachers in the best way. She cares about how students do. The lectures are always super funny and she gives out "attendance marks" where she gives away test questions for those who show up.
Dr. Kachur makes class fun and interesting. Shes got a lot of personality (the good kind) and lets you know what you should focus on to do well on tests. This semester they started active learning quizzes, and Ive averaged 55% on them so far, but got 88%+ on the exams. Those quizzes are definitely difficult.
Overall, Dr Kachur is a good teacher. I didn't love her teaching style, but its much better than lots of other profs. Notes are only available in class. Exams are straightforward, but it's easy to underestimate the amount of content. Also she says she only tests on the written notes, but the downside is that you need to know every little detail.
Mixed feelings about Torah. She was great; very engaging lectures (50 min felt like 10!!), found the midterm to be very fair as she tests straight from her notes and what she says in class. However, we had these online quizzes that were ridiculously hard, but managed to get 100s by collaborating with others which was nice. Difficult final...
Dr. Kachur has a lot of energy in her lectures and makes the learning very entertaining. I really enjoyed her class! However, her assesments were tough, especially the quizzes, as well as the final. You have to make sure you know your stuff if you wanna do well in her class.
Only posts skeleton notes so you must show up. Notes are organized and clear. Lectures are engaging and entertaining. Very clear about what is expected and gives lots of hints for the midterm and final. Don't forget to study pre-midterm material for the final, was tough. Makes you work for it but you're rewarded in the end. Strongly recommended!
Honestly a real gem. If you take her 107 class, I highly recommend not skipping because she can speak off the lecture notes but specifically tells you if it's going to be on the midterm/final (which is also great about her bc you'll know exactly what to study). Very similar to a high school teacher, very very caring
Torah is the worst prof you could ever have. Her tests are extremely hard, especially the written, which is often the largest chunk of the test. Her averages on the midterms are low 50s and she claims "It's always this low for this class" but in reality she is just a horrible prof and cannot teach the material well enough for students to do well
She's a fantastic lecturer with a wonderful personality, however, her questions for the class require you to by her own admission "guess" and "look them up on google" as opposed to looking in the notes given, if I wanted to learn off of google I wouldn't have come to university.
She is a solid prof, her lectures are engaging and clear. The assignments and exams are hard, but that's just because its one of the first courses introducing you to ''critical thinking'' rather than spitting out what you memorized. It's hard to get super high grades, but the curve and low class averages helps you out, if you're an A or B student
first off, I admire the passion she has for the content. However it is absolutely unfair for her to expect that her students have that much enthusiasm and time to pour into her class while we all have 4 other courses to worry about. her assignments are complete and utter torture, pointless to try. all application questions that she wont teach you.
Her notes are super great. They tell you exactly what you need to know. She gives four acitive learnings, which are impossible if you do not do it in groups, which she recommends. Her exams are also quite tough, requiring a lot of thinking. However, she was still a great professor. Just make sure to have friends in her class.
Torah is funny and passionate about what she is teaching, I enjoyed her lectures. However her section is very content heavy, even if you study its hard to remember all the little details. Her tests didnt seem to reflect what we talked about in class and the wordings in the question are confusing.
Shes passionate about the material which made the lectures bearable however get ready to write. She takes notes with you but writes at the speed of light and barely explains what shes writing. She expected us to know everything in the notes for the midterm (which were extremely detailed), but then tested on content only from a few topics.
Hated Torah in 107 and imin 200. She writes so fast and doesn't really explain concepts. The lectures are jumbled and not really organized very well. Her tests are a nightmare, no one ever gets 100% on them. Initially she seems to really care but you'll notice that her tests are a slap to the face.
She's very passionate about the topics taught in class. But when it comes to her actual teaching and exams, things start to fall apart. Her notes are content heavy, and her exams weren't really a good representation of the material she went over. She also speaks really fast, so it's easy to miss details. I wouldn't take another class with her.
Lectures were a mess. Consisted of frantically copying jumbled factoids she writes down without any real explaining meaning listening to lecture recordings after class wont help your understanding. Midterm was an even bigger mess. Tests on things that were 100% NOT in the notes or said in lectures. Extremely unfair testing.
Torahs is a solid lecturer who moves at a reasonable pace and provides partial notes for each lesson. The issue is that the assignments, quizzes and exams are extremely hard and she tests on things that are not discussed in lecture or in the notes. For example, One of the midterm questions specifically told us to use google to find the answer.
Fantastic prof! Lectures are engaging and interesting, and she only tests what is discussed in class. It's a challenging class that makes you work for your mark, but I feel like I learned a lot. I would definitely take classes with her again!
Worst prof I've had in all my years of undergrad. Tests aren't bad tbh but the group assignments were extremely convoluted and hard to do well in. The averages for the four assignments ranged from 35-55%. Expect to read papers about things that are very loosely related to the course material and to be put at a disadvantage as a lower year student.
A great prof. All lectures were prerecorded and extremely simple to follow along in the skeleton notes. Easily understood material. Very relaxed and self paced, just ensure that you dont procrastinate as it is easy to fall behind on lectures
She teaches one thing, and tests on completely different things. Exams are a mess. Take if you like studying hard and doing poorly on her nonsensical exams.
Profffesor Kachur is genuinely the most understanding and relatable teacher I have ever had. She clearly loves her job and does everything in her power to help her students succeed.
If you have Torah for a prof, TAKE HER, she's by far one of my favourite lecturers this semester. Despite the course being content heavy, the effort and enthusiasm Torah puts into lectures makes the info easily-digestible, and only she can convince me that bacteria are interesting. Tests are fair as long as you study and stay caught up
She is my favourite prof this semester. She truly loves her job and relates so many stories she seems like a real person. Her notes are really concise and easy to follow so as long as you study and understand the material you should be just fine. I love watching her lectures because I'm interested because she is passionate about the material.
Dr. Kachur was amazing! I had her for bio107 online because of the pandemic, and she was by far my favourite prof. I even changed my schedule for next semester to get into her bio207 class. She gives hints in her lectures about what's on the exam, and her lecture videos were really clear and easy to follow, but you have to study to get a good grade
She was amazing and funny, she explained everything so well and had funny stories as well. You do have to work a bit to remember everything because it is a lot but that's just biol 107 in general.
Her lectures are stupidly long and contain so much useless information. Her diagrams are absolute garbage. Wish she used proper diagrams and videos to explain concepts instead of trying to explain it herself when she clearly cannot. Khan academy explains concepts in 5 minutes while Kachur takes 2 hours to poorly explain the concept.
Her notes are pretty good and informative, and she is pretty engaging as well and clear when explaining concepts. Her quizzes are hard, but you can work with peers and will probably get a mark you are happy with. She doesn't provide filled in notes, so you actually have to watch the lectures to get the notes. Only tests on her notes, which is good
I had her for online and she pre recorded all her lectures. She explains concepts well and tells you what's on the final and midterm. She doesn't really respond to emails and she strongly advises us not to email her anyway. She's a solid choice but make sure you stay on top of everything, especially the post midterm material.
pretty content heavy course but Dr Kachur makes it very interesting. Her lectures can be fairly long but she keeps it exciting with funny stories and jokes and explains concepts in interesting ways. Lectures are recorded but she holds live review sessions which are very helpful and gives a lot of clues for what will be on exams. Amazing prof
This was by far one of the best classes I've taken. Dr. Kachur was really specific about what would be on her exams, so as long as you watch the lectures and show up to the review sessions, you're good! Her lectures were really interesting. You definitely have to study, but it's a great class!
Dr. T is one of my favourite profs so far! Her lectures are not too long, and she explains concepts really well within that time frame. She's hilarious during class and acts like an actual person instead of a robot prof, and you can tell she genuinely cares about her students and wants to be there. She can have really tough exams though. 10/10
One of the worst profs I have ever had. She is horrible at explaining concepts, and lecture notes are just outlines you have fill in during lecture videos, Also she writes extremely fast making it hard to keep up. Her Quizzes are extremely hard and do not test on material covered in class. Midterm was hard and the final was BRUTAL. DO NOT TAKE HER
Torah was a good prof, she was really sweet and always helped when you had questions. The biggest problem is that her quizzes aren't related to lecture material, and her final was way harder than expected. You really have to work in her class if you want a good mark and her videos are not enough to get you through it.
Good prof, very organized online materials, really difficult course with a TON of material. Dont miss lectures or review sessions!!! She tries to make the course load easier by specifying which concepts will be on midterm and final (worth 87% of final mark). Uses SEM and other proctoring programs. VERY difficult final. Text book not required.
Definitely my favourite prof this semester, she's a solid choice. Midterm was an absolute breeze however the final wasn't as brutal as people say as long as you studied. There were a few random/unrelated questions which was annoying but otherwise I found this was generally a class where your hard work pays off.
A real queen. The lectures were long and content heavy but she does her best to keep you interested even through pre-recorded lectures. The midterm was fair but I did find the final was harder. As long as you take notes and watch the lectures this class should be okay.
Dr. Kachur was a nice professor but made everything UNBELIEVABLE DIFFICULT. Quizzes are basically impossible because its based on non-lecture content. She doesn't care if you understand and memorized the content for the tests because she'll screw you over by testing concepts that are way too difficult for an introductory course.
Hard class. Not a single mark in this class is easy, you definitely have to work for it. Midterm was fair, but the average was really high so she made the final very hard. Quizzes are quite difficult as well. Her notes and explanations are good though, so if you have a keen interest in learning biology over getting a good grade she's not bad.
Awesome prof! Her class isn't hard as long as you put standard effort into it. Theres 4 quizzes that are semi-difficult however each is like 4 questions with 2 hours to do them, and if you collaborate with others youll do great. Honestly the people complaining about Torah's 107 class are people who likely didnt study and are salty about their grade
Torah is an amazing prof, yes her tests can be a bit tricky but if you study lots they aren't that bad. I looked forward to watching her asynchronous lectures and going to review sessions because she is such a passionate and hilarious professor. Her explanation of concepts and use of analogies is very impressive; I would 100% recommend.
Dr. Kachur was a fantastic prof. She made the material very engaging and interesting (especially the microbiome!!). Like other reviews have mentioned, the quizzes are tricky but if you find a good group of classmates to work with they are very approachable. If you keep up with the content and study well you should be fine.
She really loves what she teaches. She also prepares you very well for the exams as long as you show up to her review meetings and listen to lectures carefully. Her exams are very specific, but more straight recall than complex problem solving. Make sure you have a partner for her active learning components as they can be challenging.
She was very straightforward about what you needed to learn in order to succeed in the class, and the notes and lectures were organized and easy to follow. She made lectures enjoyable and she was very passionate about the stuff she was teaching. The only criticism is she was not the most understanding/sympathetic when it came to COVID struggles.
She is a horrible prof, she cannot explain concepts, and her notes are extremely disorganized. The quizzes or "active learnings" are really hard and don't even test on class material. The midterm was hard an the final was Brutal. She acts like she cares but actually does not care at all about students. Avoid at all costs.
Avoid Torah at all costs. She likes to act all high and might who cares for everyone but does not give two craps about you. Horrible marker, I received a 78 in the class and only got a C+. Somethings clearly wrong in her brain. Lectures are poor, doesn't even explain concepts and goes on tangents about stupid things. Tests hard. Very arrogant.
She was inaccessible via email, did not interact with students, and did not explain lecture content clearly and concisely. However, what was the most disappointing was that students with 53-57 were given a letter grade of F, as she had no sympathy, and claimed to "get used to university."
I loved Torah! Shes really engaging in her lectures and she relates things to life, making it better to understand the material. It was asynchronous with recorded videos. Imo, her exams were pretty easy too, and so was the lab component. I ended the course with a 86 ish but got a B+ bc the class average was pretty high.
ridiculous curve but she was good prof no kap
She was so nice and enthusiastic about what she was teaching. Her lectures covered a lot and overall she drops lots of hints about tested materials. Her assignments however are ridiculous (and she knows it). Youll need a group effort to do well on them but with teamwork its possible.
I really enjoyed her lectures-- she's hilarious, they were content-heavy but she wastes no time to get through all the material in a relatively short amount of time. Asynchronous but still had a weekly system set up that was helpful. Midterm easy and final was substantially harder but study and you'll be okay. Curve is brutal but not her fault.
Lectures are engaging and easy to follow along with, as is the format for her notes. Her exams are tricky, and there are a lot of application questions beyond simple memorization. Be sure to attend her review sessions, as she gives lots of hints and an overview of what will be tested. You will definitely need to put in the work for a high grade.
Dr. Kachur was really good! It was all asynchronous because of COVID-19, but she put time into each recording to make them captivating and super informative. And before each test, she would hold a Q&A going over the most important topics... and gave a lot of hints.
Dr. Kachur is a solid choice for a professor. She is very knowledgeable and caring, and she forces you to really understand the material if you want a good grade. The exams can be quite difficult if you do not prepare well though, so make sure you study lots.
Her passion for this subject makes the content-heavy lectures engaging. Some of the quizzes are extremely difficult, and sometimes don't even relate to the content, but she does encourage collaboration. You definitely need to put in the work to study for the exams, because the application-based questions aren't as easy as they may seem.
Very engaging, I'll never forget about panda sex ever again haha
Shes an amazing lecturer and actually engages students in the recorded videos, unlike some other professors with very dry lectures. Her midterm was great but not worth as much as it probably should be. The final was killer. Since the class average is so high you really had to WORK to secure the grade. Slack off and it will reflect in your mark.
Her exams are tough, but if you put in the work, you'll be totally fine. Do the active learning components with friends, impossible if you do it by yourself. Overall the lectures were well done and easy to understand with lots of good analogies. Overall, just be ready to put in the work for a good grade.
Torah's class was completely asynchronous which made it very difficult to ask specific questions especially if you couldn't attend the 1 hour office hours once a week. Tests were difficult. My major criticism of Torah is how insensitive she could be towards people who couldn't just "study all the time" or were struggling with their classes.
Many people struggle in their first semester of university with classes, however this is not the fault of the professor. Dr. Kachur is honestly a funny and engaging prof and the amount of studying required in the class was not unreasonable. Make sure you understand the content and know the details, but midterm and final were honestly fair.
LISTEN UP!! I would NOT recommend anyone taking this prof! I mean it. She had decent reviews in the summer and that is why I took bio 107 with torah. But now you can tell how many students do not like her. Do not listen to the few (20 students MAX out of 300 students in a classroom that got A's) convince you that she is good. PLSSS take it from me.
It was easy to focus in her class as she engaged students. So for 107 I would take her again. However, it was hard to get a hold of her and she made it very difficult to look at exams. The best way you can do well in her class is to ALWAYS ATTEND and pay attention to what she says and every detail of her notes. For 200L courses she gets harder!
I was excited because I loved her in 107. I personally found her section to be taught to fast and loosely explained. The exam for her section was very difficult so take time in advanced to have a full understanding of EACH PAGE of her notes.
Y'all. Prof T is literally my teacher crush. She's funny, caring, engaging, and roots for your success by providing lots of examples in class that ACTUALLY stick with you. If you get a bad grade, it's really on you: don't cram (like I did 2 days b4 the final, which messed up my WHOLE grade)! Make sure you can teach yourself the material!
Torah's class is not easy by any means but she is hilarious. Her tests are fair but her quizzes can be a little unreasonably hard. She really cares about students and is the most fun lecturer I've ever had.
She makes biology which is a super boring subject for me really interesting and fun. I'm motivated to learn! She is very difficult though but I think it's fair. You want to really internalize the material to get a good mark in her class. Beware of her difficult tests!
She is one of my favourite profs. She does classes asynchronously, but her videos are so engaging it feels as if you are really in a class. She has amazing analogies for everything that makes it easy to remember things, and she answers emails pretty quickly. I would 100% take her class again.
Really nice person, really bad prof. Her section of the course always has significantly lower than average midterm results, her notes are a disaster, don't make sense and have a lot of errors in them, jumped all over the place. She tests on minute details, basically you need to memorize every detail.
Dr. Kachur is nice but her exam was extremely difficult. I knew it would be hard going into it so I set aside a lot of time to study... and it felt like it did not pay off. Her midterm had an average that was 20% lower than the other profs. I really liked the content of her section, so it is unfortunate that the midterm was so impossible.
Dr. Kachur is an excellent professor! Her lectures are engaging and the content is super interesting. She is a very kind person and is easy to get into contact with outside of class. The only downside is that her exam was fairly difficult but other than that I really enjoyed her section of the course!!
Torah's lectures are extremely content heavy so get ready to write your hand off. Other than that and the difficult exams she is rather nice.
Take a class with Torah! Her notes are so organized. Her tests are challenging but have 0 surprises - she explicitly says what will be on the exam and what won't be. She uses a bunch of analogies that actually stick with you. She's down to earth and good at what she does.
Torah really made you want to watch the lectures; she wasn't bland at ALL. Be sure to collaborate with classmates on the quizzes because she makes them hard but doable with others. The exams were relatively fair. Her notes were nice and easy to follow. Overall, I really enjoyed her as a prof!
Ok so her lectures are not bad and shes very entertaining sure. But the final, as much as she says that she drops hints- the final isnt prepared for in her class at all, her averages of finals are mid 60s. The highest mark on finals are 80s at best. The midterm was easy so idk why she did us dirty on the final.
Her lectures are very informative and she makes the content very interesting. BUT her tests are pretty hard because she builds on what you learn in the lectures so you need to understand the material rather than memorizing. Doing the problem sets and going to the PAL sessions helped A LOT. Overall, great professor but not an easy A.
As long as you study, it is not difficult to do well in this class. Kachurs lectures are super engaging and interesting. One of the best profs out there.
Torah Kachur is by far the best professor I had this year. She is so passionate about science which makes the course very engaging and interesting. Despite the fact that I had her for online class, it felt like we were in person. Her tests can be tricky, but going to her review sessions helps a lot!
Excellent lecture style. She provides detailed note templates that guide you through the course. The tests were heavily weighted towards application-based question. Dont rely on memorization alone! Generally, I highly recommend her!
I quite enjoyed this class and Kachur. She was always clear in her lectures and tries her best to engage you. There are 5 active learning components (collaboration is allowed and necessary), two midterms (the second midterm is super tough), a lab (could have been organized better) and a cumulative final. She is also quite funny.
She cares so much about her students and even removed our last lecture and 2 quizzes from the course after multiple students had reached out and said they were struggling. Truly the most genuine and kind prof I have ever had. She replies to emails within a day and actually encourages students to email her even if it's just to say hi and check in.
Fantastic prof. Passionate about her field. Quizzes were fair, midterm/final were alright. There were Active Learning Components every few weeks which were activities from hell haha. They were unnecessarily difficult. The lab component for this class was a mess. My TA was really rude and unhelpful marked the lab assignments pretty hard.
Kachur is an amazing prof who gives great lectures. She cares a lot about her students and it's clear she's passionate about the topic. Her exams were fairly difficult. All of her exams are based on APPLYING the material rather than memorization, so you really have to understand the material. She's super available in office hours to help you.
Dr. Kachur is one of the best profs I've had, she only tests on lectures and her lectures are very clear. She gives hints at what will be tested on. Before every exam she had review session where she gave lots of hints of what to study, quizzes were open book with collaboration but were somewhat difficult, strongly recommend for BIOL 207.
Torah is a fantastic genetics and biology instructor. She is one of the most caring profs I have come across throughout my degree and she makes learning genetics fun. The rumor is true that her tests are harder than most professors, but overall if you break down the questions into simple components that were taught in class, you can get a good mark
Great educator! But man, her exams are hard! They weren't fair in my opinion but she does really make you learn :)
Engaging lecturer, decent prof. If you ask her a question in email, sometimes she doesn't directly address what you are asking which is a letdown. Exams are not bad, fair; however, usually there's 1-2 controversial questions with 2 answer choices that can both be argued as right depending on the evidence you use. Gotta work hard for your grade!
Her lectures are fun to attend and she's very nice and approachable and gives lots of hints about exams. However, I found her exams very difficult and stress the importance of the details. You will not get a good grade if you learn the idea of a topic, you need all the specific and tiny details.
I'm sorry but Torah is really not that funny, her tests are unfair and extremely difficult. She is a good lecturer but the level of difficulty is not ok for a beginner course she tests on tiny details and multiple questions have 2 answers that could be right... honestly I would avoid this class. She states that she wants her averages to be 60's
I think that she's a great prof in the sense that she's nice and funny. However, she doesn't really answer questions directly in order to somehow make it so we don't know how to answer the test question. As well her tests are stupidly hard, possibly the hardest tests you will ever have to take in your life. It's bad when the highest grade is a 90.
Lectures were fun and entertaining to listen to, and she provides hints on what may be on tests. The tests themselves were challenging, and vocabulary is definitely stressed (make a glossary at the beginning of the term). Overall though, Torah was a great prof.
Torah was a good prof who made class interesting and I liked her style of teaching. The tests were very hard and youll need to study lots of tiny details. It seems similar to high school but still study! Overall the class was fun and interesting if you work hard!
When all the other bio sections have 10-15% higher averages on the midterm and final, you know there's a serious issue with her exams. Doesn't matter if she was "fun" or not, if you want a better grade then avoid her at all costs.
I had her for biol 107 last year and she's been my fav prof since then. Her explanation style really sticks with you -- I still use many of her analogies and notes for higher biol classes. She made class exciting and fun and i looked forward to learn more. Her exams are hard tho - emphasis is more about understanding the material than memorizing it
Her lectures are very engaging but the exams are almost unreasonably difficult. Sometimes she avoids or goes on tangent if the questions you ask happen to be similar to questions she put on the exam.
All her lectures were very engaging and kept me coming to class, very passionate about what she does, but she can get a bit off topic sometimes. Her homework was easy, but her tests were extremely difficult. There were a lot of possible answers for the multiple choice. I would take her again for her teaching style, but wouldn't for a better grade.
Funny lectures. ALCs are difficult unless you collaborate with others. Midterm and final were decent (she holds review sessions for both exams) if you study and do problem sets. Don't skip lectures as she uses skeleton notes. Don't think it's necessary to use the textbook as her explanations are good. Think she oversimplified some content though.
Difficult exams and ALC's can be rough, entertaining prof but be prepared to work hard and put the time in.
Professor Kachur was such a vibe. She always has helpful analogies to help you understand the material. You need to understand the material rather than memorize it to do well in her class. Her tests are difficult though. Make sure you study. She was funny and had a passion for the subject. Without a doubt one of my favorite profs this year!
Prof. Kachur is a great lecturer, and she makes all of her lectures interesting. They are also all recorded, so missing class is not a big deal. However, her tests are extremely hard for a first year course, making it hard to do well in the class.
She is a great professor, very clear with what you need to know on exams and projects. She has assignments, ALCs that are harder questions than on the final, but she greatly encourages you to work together on them. After working together, they're not that difficult and really are there for you to learn from. She's a great professor, take her!
I loved Bio with Professor Kachur. She passed on her own enthusiasm for the topics. Exams were tough (study hard) but the lectures were interesting and funny. She made you work for your grade but overall I really like the class.
Very fun prof who is clearly very passionate about Biology. if you pay attention in class and take notes you will do fine. She provides problem sets for each unit on eClass for practice and also provides a practice midterm and final exam. Her tests are not easy, but if you study well you will do fine.
I loved having Torah as my bio 107 prof. She made it a fun environment to learn in but she also does not mess around with the material. Her tests are a bit difficult, but as long as you work hard, attend class, and follow her notes youll be fine.
This is your warning, do not take Bio 201 with this professor! Her exams are insanely difficult. Yes, she is an engaging lecturer I'll give her that. But if you want a decent grade then do yourself a favour and take this course with a different prof. Lectures and practice problems will not prepare you for her unfair exams.
her lectures are very engaging and she is a very nice prof however her sections test was just stupid. it tested on the most obscure things that had no relevance at all. I think its more reflective on the profs test writing abilities when more students score in the low 20s and 30s than in the 70s. Overall good lectures but unfair tests.
Her exams are terribly unfair. She claims that she's "trying to find differences" between students that's why her exams are unreasonably difficult. Unless you're truly an "exceptional" student, your chances of getting an A in this class is uncertain. Problem sets don't prepare you. I hope she re-evaluates how she runs the course. Traumatizing.
Lively lectures? Exam difficulty is way beyond the scope of a 200-level course. Class started with about 200 students. About 80 students dropped after the 2nd midterm. Save yourself the stress. Avoid.
Hard work will surely payoff, EXCEPT when you have Torah Kachur for Biol 201. You might find your hard work plateau because no matter how much you study the material, there's no guarantee you will get an A in her utterly unfair exams.
Torah is a very sweet person and super understanding (love her as a person). However I found her tests, assignments and ACL to very poorly worded. I felt like some of her lecture + practice material had errors and was all over the place when presented in class. You have to put in a lot of work, and even then may not do well.
Her exams are hard but her review sessions are great. She is funny and a great lecturer. Would definitely take a class with Torah again
i failed her midterm but her section had to be the most engaging and fun! not because i liked the content (i didn't) but because she's an amazing lecturer in that she's funny and it's easy to focus. the way she speaks and elaborates on information makes it easy to sit and learn. you'll definitely learn a lot with her but ur gpa will take a hit
I enjoyed the content but beyond that, this class gave me a lot of headaches. This has been the hardest course I've taken in university because I feel no amount of studying can prepare you for the exams. Content is not difficult, you need to know how to apply it. Some questions in the assignments and tests were ambiguous and poorly worded as well.
Torah was really good at giving lectures, she was always organized and had funny stories, however there's no way in hell those tests needed to be that hard. I studied for weeks and I still felt so unprepared for the final exam, it was just way too hard.
She is a really nice person and a very engaging lecturer, but her exams and assignments are close to impossible! You can study for hours and know your material but it still wont pay off:( I would avoid taking this class with her if you can!
Dr. Kachur was an amazing professor. I liked her notes and her willingness to help. Very engaging lectures. Grades were based on 4 collaborative assignments, lab, midterm and final. Her exams are very fair and are based only on what was written in class. Would definitely take another class with her.
Biol 201with Kachur the hardest 200-level course I have ever taken (even harder than the dreaded Chem 261 imo), but it goes quite in depth and prepares your for higher level courses. Tests are difficult and very nitpicky on the details. Memorize and understand every single concept if you want to do well.
Dr. Kachur is very passionate about her field of study and made the course quite interesting! She is also just a very nice and funny person in general. However, her exams and assignments were insanely difficult. Even with hours of studying and hard work, a decent grade is never guaranteed due to vaguely worded application-based exams.
Dr. Kachur is awesome and her lectures are very engaging!! She is super passionate about biology and cares about her students. There is a lot of content so make sure you stay on track! The only complaint that I have is that the multiple choice of the final was weirdly tricky and I even studied a lot.
Midterm was pretty easy (70%) whereas the final was pretty tough (54% avg). Religiously study her notes as she doesn't refer to the textbook, re-draw diagrams, and try to do your best on lab assignments to buffer your mark when finals rolls around. In lecture, she goes off on tangents which really breaks up the flow (good and a bad thing).
Class content was interesting, and she's a fun lecturer. However, she simply tests WAY too hard, and it's not worth the stress. Her questions were worded ambiguously, and once she explained what she wanted when going over the exam, it made sense, but during the exam, it felt as though the only way to get the answer would be to be inside her head.
She is a very nice and engaging lecturer however her tests and ALCs are incredibly difficult. Some of the problems are poorly worded and most times the answers make sense if you are her. The only way to get a good mark is to memorize every detail including her random tangents and pray you understand her word problems and pray for the curve.
Torah Kachur has been one of my favourite profs for a while now. She's extremely engaging, supportive, and keeps lectures fun. She treats her students with respect and is very easy to talk to and get along with. I liked how the last topic of her section was not tested on the midterm and was the only topic in her section of the course on the final.
She is the best!!!! She makes lectures super interesting and gives hilarious analogies to remember concepts! Exams are a little tough but if you put in effort its all good!
The lectures were well done and the material that we needed to know was very clear. She would often drop hints at what would be on the tests so it was important to attend all lectures. Her tests were more difficult than expected so beware. Overall she was a great prof and would take her class again.
There is a high workload for this class. It's a module-based online class with online zoom seminars every few weeks. There are 2-3 writing assignments every week, with a quiz every 2 modules. Around 500-750 words every week. Usually, 1 of those assignments are on Kritik, which is a peer assessment tool. It can feel like a lot of work.
I'm taking INT D 101 as the first time they're ever running it. There's a lot of written work and the quizzes in the beginning were harder than the content. They did fix it over time, and I'm sure they'll fix it for the next semesters. One of the easiest classes to take. Haven't met Dr. Kachur but she seemed really nice.
Dr. Kachur is a great teacher. Her lectures were interesting and always in-depth and relatively easy to understand; however, her tests, ALCs, and assignments seemed to be as difficult as she could possibly make them. Most of her questions were vague and required more knowledge then what was taught in the course to do well.
Personally for me, no matter how good of a prof she is, how difficult her tests are it is just not worth it. Be prepared to know the material inside and out and still do poorly. She is an absolutely amazing teacher, I recommend somehow finding her recorded lecs and go with a prof that actually tests fair.
She tries to make class very engaging and she's a really good lecturer overall. However her tests are VERY hard. Even if you feel like you understand the content inside and out and leave the exam feeling like you aced it, you probably didn't so lower your expectations when it comes to taking her tests.
Torah's lectures are amazing and she does a great job engaging students. She has an excellent teaching style although her exams are VERY hard. No matter how many hours you spend studying her tests are still extremely difficult.
Very disappointed with Torah, as I am sure most people taking INT D are. Not sure why a bio prof is teaching a business course when this is clearly not her level of expertise. If you had around an 80% in this class you would find yourself at a C+. Not sure where she is coming up with this especially since the average for the first quiz was 30%.
Professor Torah sets the paper expecting you to be like her and have the same problem solving skills like her. Her exams are very difficult and she is very picky with her answers, it doesn't matter how hard you study, there are high chances you will have a hard time.
Dr. Kachur is a very charismatic professor who is clearly passionate about her field and her students. Her exams can tend to get difficult even if you study lots (due to highly specific questions). Regardless, she provides hints as to what is on her exams but she also tests anything and everything she says or writes in lecture so make sure you go.
Do NOT take this course. Like seriously - do NOT take INT D 101. Even though the professors themselves are well articulated, and clearly a lot of funding went into creating the videos for the course - the course content's quality itself was below average. Definitely not worth the $500, definitely not a challenging or enjoyable course. 4/10
Dr. Kachur's class was my favourite to attend because I found her very fun. I am more engaged when the prof is engaged so I really enjoyed her lectures and wish she was teaching a 201 class next semester. Yes her tests are hard, but I actually thought they were pretty reasonable and stuck to what we learned in class, you just have to think about it
Professor Kachur is great, her lectures were always fun and lively and she has lots of passion for what she teaches. She also writes down the exact notes we need during class rather than reading from a PowerPoint which helps a lot. Overall I really enjoyed this class but her exams are on the tougher side so focus on studying lots.
Her tests are hard, but if you attend lectures she tells you exactly what to study and gives out hints.
She is a good prof. It was the first year running this class so there were a lot of things to fix and tweak for next years class. This was a bit annoying, but the class overall was very easy. I didn't find the workload terrible. Hopefully some of the problems are fixed for the next semester so the class runs more smoothly.
This class was 75% online and 25% in person but we weren't told this until first day which sucks. She's a great teacher but her tests are actually impossible (51% average on first midterm and 55% average on second). ALCs are impossible unless you work together as a class. 3 assignments on scientific papers were a struggle. Take any other prof.
Wonderful prof all around, very caring and understanding of students, and definitely very reasonable. 100% attend every possible lecture as she only tests the material covered in lecture. For exams and midterms, do all practice and also make Q cards of everything and you'll be alright.
Made going to lecture super enjoyable, always made the class laugh. Connected the topics to real life situations that made them easier to understand. Was super clear about what material would be on exams. Tests were hard but still fair.
She was really nice and her lectures were interesting.
Dr. Kachur is a very engaging professor; her lecture notes contain visuals that contextualize concepts. However, her exams are known to be the hardest out of the current BIOL 107 professors. Many students struggled due to this. Attending lectures is a MUST as she doesn't record lectures and gives hints about exam questions.
I loved Kachur's class. This was the only class I would actually go to every time, because she makes her lectures very fun to attend. The midterm and final were on the tougher side, but if you pay attention and study you won't have any problems.
This was a great class, and I learned a lot about leadership. Very light course. The only downside was the marking. Every TA had different expectations in terms of marking, which was not fair. Dr. Kachur was a great prof though. She made a lot of adjustments to the course as it progressed and was very understanding of her students.
Her courses are unfairly difficult. Why? Her exams are way beyond the scope of what she teaches. Provides simple explanations but leaves out so much detail yet expects you to know details and critically think. Pls fact check her exam questions. Struggled in Biol107/201/Imin200. Took related 300 level courses-did stellar. Shes the problem not you
INTD 101 is literally the most useless class i have ever taken in my LIFE. How this course got approved as an actual 3 credit course is insane. You're learning effectively nothing of sustenance. its extremely easy yeah, but if you're paying for a course it is better you take one that has interesting and/or practically useful content.
Dr. T is an amazing professor! Her lectures are awesome and she tells plenty of stories to keep things interesting. She sometimes teaches beyond the scope of the course, but she mentions when she is and won't test on it. Her tests are infamously tricky and attending lectures is a must, but if you show up consistently you'll be prepared for tests.
Torah is extremely funny and makes her classes interesting, but her exams are ridiculous. Sometimes it felt as though she had taken a thesaurus and changed every word, as often the questions made no sense. In her class make sure to remember every single word she says or else you are screwed.
Torah is an incredible instructor. She uses funny analogies to help us understand concepts, tells good stories, and her lecture notes are well-formatted. She also gives out exam hints in lectures. Her exams are difficult, but if you attend lectures and do the problem sets you'll do fine.
Torah is an amazing prof. She uses a lot of analogies to try and make the material more digestible and will regularly repeat a harder concept to make sure everyone understands. Her tests are pretty hard and she expects you to work for your grade but it is definitely manageable. By far the best in the biology department.
Dr. Kachur is such an engaging lecturer. Intense woman overall, but made the boring intro cell bio much more interesting than it could have been with any other prof. Tests are reasonable, you're in university, it's a given that they'll be difficult. Make Anki cards, but also relate lectures to each other and you'll be completely fine.
Professor Kachur was great! She truly loves biology and makes her lectures fun and engaging. Her active learning components are tough but they are open book and collaborative so they are not horrible. I totally would take her as a professor again.
She is very engaging in class and makes it seem like the content is straight forward. However, her exams are just excessively challenging compared to the other two profs in this class. Start memorizing early and pay attention to every little detail in her notes.
She's funny, passionate, kind; this all makes her a great person. As for being a professor, I would say she's mediocre at best. Her tests are a bit ridiculous to the point where she had to inflate our grades. Her notes are kind of disorganized as well. If not for her brilliant personality, her class would be just average.
Awesome and engaging prof, if it weren't for her extremely difficult tests I would have considered taking one of her classes again.
Torah Kachur has a very captivating style of teaching. I had her for Biol 107 and INT D 101. Her Bio class was amazing, informative, and hilarious. Int D is not so fun. The course is new and very confusing, but Torah's videos are interesting. The quizzes are really difficult, but the rest of the course is easy. Good GPA booster!
Dr. Kachur was one of the most engaging profs I had this year. Her lectures were funny and she gave us all the info we needed for tests. As for her exams, they were extremely fair. There were no surprise questions. She focuses on large concepts and our understanding of them, not small, trivial details. Would def take another class with her.
She's an amazing professor, I always looked forward to her classes. Her lectures are engaging, she has a great personality and is always telling funny stories that relate to the content. She'll often mention which sections, drawings and concepts will be on the exams, so if you come to lectures and pay attention, you'll do fine.
Hands down, best lecturer I've had. She is so engaging, caring, tells great stories and explains things extremely clearly. She also posts all the lectures (stories included) so you can still do great without going (she's so fun though you wanna go). Her exams were really tough though. You can study a bunch and still feel super unprepared.
Torah is super sweet and funny but makes class super difficult. ALCs were insanely difficult and had to be done in groups if you wanted a good mark. Exams unreasonably hard; you could study for weeks prior and still do badly just because of difficult and vague questions. Assignments were also a lot of work and graded tough.
This class is new and has a few growing pains, but overall it was informative and relatively light. Quizzes were the only somewhat difficult aspect. Otherwise, it was an easy course that should by taken by anyone who wants a lighter class workload. All in all, I would recommend this class. Put in the work and it will pay dividends.
Took this course last year, and it was def not it. I didn't learn much from it, and having personal responses graded by other peers through Kritik was a huge hit or miss. Quizzes had difficult wording imo, and the course quickly lost any initial intrigue I had for it.
Took this class last sem and she would not round up my grade 0.15% to an A. During the interviews she does with the suggest, Torah seems more interested in talking about herself. Not sure why a bio prof is teaching a leadership course especially since she takes non of the feedback from this course into consideration.
Unrespect to students and give unfair grades. p.s. INTD 207.
Rudest prof I've ever had the displeasure of having. Called students "dumb", doesn't seem to want to help (no in-person office hours), resorts to students teaching themselves as she posts online videos instead. All marking material is UNNECESSARILY hard and SO MUCH GROUP WORK! I'm an easy straight A student, & she is ruining this. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
The course is not well-designed: the peer-rating assignments were non-standardized nightmares, the prof's response was not critical and not helpful, and the TA's understanding of the assignment and seminar was even less than students (I still remember when TA was asked to clarify about the assignment, TA said "I don't know any details")
AVOID THIS PROFFFFF!!! The correct answers to the test cannot be viewed and I am confused about the answers. Some of the content in the exam has nothing to do with what is taught in the course.
AVOID Worst prof you can have. Pre-makes her videos so she doesn't have to do any work and can sit on her a** all day. Uses Kritik so she doesn't have to put in any effort. CAN'T EVEN VIEW MISTAKES ON QUIZZES. I am beyond frustrated with her. She has rude and snappy replies to emails and thinks she is better than everyone.
Please do not take this course if you want a respectable grade. Quizzes are subjective and there is no review permitted. It is difficult to score extremely high due to peers on Kritik and we have not even reached the final project yet. Not even sure what I am learning from this course and its assessments are horrendous.
Extremely inconsistent marker. Impossible to do well, and need something insane like a 95% (20% above class average) for an A. Don't take this class.
Quizzes have nothing to do with course content. Can't review them either. Assignments are done through kritik. Even if you get 100% on your assignment, your final mark can end up being much lower. This is because when you evaluate your peers, unless your score is 100% aligned with other peer evaluations + the TA (never happens), you lose marks.
Absolute abomination of a course, never taking this again, quizzes are ridiculously subjective and you cannot review your answers. Kritik has made it impossible to get a grade because students will literally give a trash mark for no reason. Absolutely done with this, Kachur has to be one of the worst profs ive ever had teaching the worst course.
As someone who did well in INTD101, this course created by the same prof has been a total 180, not sure why peer grading is so aggressive and quizzes have never been so guess-heavy. There is no objective truth to the answers on the quizzes which are not permitted to be reviewed. Totally disappointed and won't take other INTD courses from Kachur!
So so bad. DO NOT TAKE HER. Exams are impossible to do well on and have very low averages. Not good at all.
What a ridiculously easy class. All online async and all pre recorded videos. Idk how you could get a bad grade in this class.
quizzes are an issue, peer grading can be tough if you're unlucky, final project due a day before exam season
DrT responds quickly to emails but often misses the key point, doesn't provide helpful insight into issues, doesn't take student feedback, and has developed a complete waste of a course. The modules lack cohesion, grading is incredibly subjective, and have no value. Although the course load is manageable, it is a complete waste of time and money.
As the other student said, this course is a complete waste of my time. All the modules are badly structured and jumping all the places around. Quizzes are poorly structured and unreasonable. When this prof record a video in the module, she is blab random things like teaching a cult.
Great course, 4 asynchronous modules + 4 Zoom seminars throughout the term (get to pick time that works best for you). Modules are interesting, and digestible. Each module has a Kritik assignment. One final creative project. Great if you're looking for something manageable, but want something meaningful and to gain some leadership knowledge
shes a great person, I love her energy and teaching style. BUT, the exams are so difficult for no reason. Overall, I would find someone else to take this class with.
This is seriously the worst class I have ever taken in my whole degree (im in sciences) and I regret the second I enrolled in it. The quizzes were completely subjective and did not reflect course content at all, its straight guessing. Peer reviewed assignments were luck-dependent since it depends on the type of people that mark your papers.
Never suggest anybody take this course with Torah, absolutely nothing same from the course to the exam. Failed, retook with another professor and got a B-. Most disgusting marking style I've ever seen.
Honestly so easy, just do the work its not difficult - easy credit. If you are a upper year student beware of all the first year kids enrolled, they are so annoyed and ask too many questions. Don't watch the videos just read the transcript and you'll be fine.
Her lecture notes are fill-in-the-blank style and they really help illustrate what you need to learn for 207. Its very clear that she is very passionate about bio but her midterms. were. just. so. hard. She is a good professor don't get me wrong but her midterms were consistently very difficult to do well on even after studying the notes in depth.
Torah is a fantastic professor and a lovely person but the tests are extremely hard. Her teaching style is great and she goes in depth into concepts but that also means that this in depth knowledge is also applied to her tests. only marked with 2 midterms, 1 final and 5% is a collaborative assignment mark.
I love Dr. Kachur, fill in the blank style notes, very helpful for visualizing. BUT if you don't know how to study, you will not do well, her exams are incredibly difficult. Overall a great prof but be prepared for hard exams.
Professor Kachur is amazing! Her lectures are fantastic and engaging and I just really loved the content of this course. Her exams are pretty tough, but they really do prepare you to continue in biology and genetics which I appreciate. This is not an easy course, but Dr. Kachur does her best to support you and gives lots of hints for exams.
Horrible Prof, I had her for my first year of uni when I took her BIO 107 class, and I immediately dropped out. My final year again I took one of her class thinking it was an easy elective, and maybe she changed as a prof nope I was wrong she likes to make things difficult for no reason. She also thinks she always right and lacks empathy.
she tests hard but she does a curve so it doesn't damage your final grade as much. My second time taking her and I absolutely loved it. It was a hybrid class where you'd watch the lectures online then come for one day a week and she'd go through practice problems.
This prof should learn some leadership skill herself, for example: empathy
This class was unbearable. The seminar assignments were fine. Graded by the students themselves. However, Kachur and the TAs are terrible at marking. This class is extremely subjective. Beware of the final project. Even when you do what you're required to do and more, you still get graded depending on how they feel. No feedback whatsoever.
Worst prof I've ever had at the UofA. Unprofessional and rude. Marking is subjective and doesn't align with rubric, when asked for feedback she refuses. Stay away at all costs
makes it really hard to learn
Excellent lecturer, with lots of time taken to answer student questions. Tough, application-heavy exams, but if you plan on taking higher-level biology classes or the MCAT, I feel like they would be excellent preparation for it. Use the 40% lab as a grade booster, and ride the curve.
Dr.T is an amazing lecturer who makes the material interesting. She is very kind and is always there to help out students who are confused (including in class too). Her tests are not too bad just make sure you understand the material rather than memorize it! I would definitely recommend her!!!!!
Class load was more than manageable. However the quizzes were guess heavy answers. Many questions would appear to have more than one correct answer. There is no feedback given from the prof and grading is very questionable. Even though part of the marks are peer evaluated, grading seemed unfair in this course especially for the final project.
The quizzes are a disaster with more than one possible answer for each question, they really need to restructure them. Our group's mark on the final project didn't make much sense. We followed the rubric exactly as it said and she still gave us a poor mark, insanely frustrating. When we emailed her asking about it, she ignored us.
Will definitely never join again.
Dr T really cares about her students, she genuinely wants us to succeed. Attending lectures is vital as she gives exam hints and goes through how to solve problems. Tests were very difficult but it's curved. Being allowed a cheat sheet on the final was a Godsend, I will forever be grateful to her for that.
Don't take this course as a GPA booster. Although it is a light course load, the quizzes are poorly written and not relevant to the course material.
This is genuinely the worst class to take as a credit booster. Dr. Kachur is not the best teacher when it comes to this subject. Neither is she helpful when it comes to improving in the course. I hope this class is not picked up again by the school, and if it is. It most definitely should not be taught by her.
I took BIOL 207 with Dr. T after having her for BIOL 107, and it was just as great as I hoped. Her lectures make dry content exciting and her random stories keep things interesting. She made it clear throughout the course that genetics isn't easy (and she isn't kidding), but there's no professor I'd rather learn it from.
This class is not a bad grade booster, don't overthink the concepts for the Kritik assignments and you will do well. The rubrics for the Kritik assignments are very straightforward and can carry your grade. However, the quizzes are difficult because they are application questions based on passages. The final exam rubric was also unclear.
Poorly designed useless class, I would not recommend taking it. No feedback given at all on the final assignment. Every quiz was inconsistent, with a class average between 40 and 90. Quiz answers rarely made sense. You can't review what you got wrong on the quiz after you took it, probably because she reuses them.
Online course poorly designed: no improvement guidance, quiz review, or access to instructor feedback. Students can only depend on peer feedback. She uses same quizzes every semester, suggesting lack of effort. Torah threatens students who complain about their grades, stating she will further penalize them. She is not a leader.
The class was tough but Torah is hilarious and made it super enjoyable. She fits in funny anecdotes but also makes sure to finish lectures on time. Her class format is also AMAZING. Empty slides are posted before class, and during class she fills them in with answers and diagrams with lots of colors. The notes are super useful! Great prof!!
The class is easy enough; however, it is extremely dysfunctional. Following along can be tough at times, and the quizzes are all over the place. Little feedback is left on assignments, and much of the class is marked by students through kritik. It is not a terrible elective, but I would not take this class again.
Her notes arent good. If you want to succeed compile all the pathogens into one document, draw them on one paper, and memorize them. Also memorize the general facts as well. remember each detail about the pathogens. For the awful way she presents and structures the material she honestly shouldnt be making such a hard exam.
Her tests are ridiculous. Even if you know your stuff and memorize everything, you will still do bad on the exam. She tests on the tiniest detail that she mentioned once in class that you wrote down on the corner of the page and she will test that on the exam. Her section is the worst of the three as she has averages in the 50s.
You are not the problem. The exam is the problem.
exams are notorious for being incredibly challenging. Despite putting in a lot of effort to understand the material, many students find themselves struggling to perform well on her tests. The questions often delve into obscure details that were briefly mentioned in class, catching many off guard.
I am currently taking INTD 207 with Prof. Kachur, and while the course load is favourable with her choosing to scrap quizzes for the winter 2024 semester, it is rather an interesting class, and the majority of the work and grades are on Kritik to be graded by your peers, and the grades are not given in real-time which makes it very unpredictable.
Stay away from her classes as this prof does not show empathy. She should learn what her course is all about--being a good leader. Even if you email her that you missed a sem bcoz your mom is dying, all she can say is "no way to make up" and "hope your mom feels better" fyi, there is always a way for great, respectable professors.
BIOL 221:Stay away! She is AWFUL at explaining concepts, and nothing she says seems to appear on the exams. She will mess up teaching the content, get everything wrong, and then, instead of clarifying the material or correcting herself, she'll test you on it! And the worst part is, she KNOWS she explained it poorly and will upload the video anyway.
She's unable to explain anything. She completely butchered teaching a concept in a VIDEO. She thought it would be better to acknowledge how poorly she explained it (in the video), say "anyways," and move on (also in the video), upload the video, and then test it on her already impossible exams. Did I mention she uses videos?
Just an overall weird course. It is not hard but it is so disorganized it is hard to know what is going on sometimes.
- Communicative skills highly unhelpful - Criteria for some assignments unclear - Quizzes, although resulting in low averages, not adjusted whatsoever (quality, clarity) - Largely dependant on TA's; professors have little involvement - Quality not reflective of fancy setup used for videos - Overall disappointing - Content otherwise easy
Poor communication, could not effectively answer a question regarding her own assignment. Initially chose to ignore the question, but continued to disregard it as she continued on by instead, using the example of another student who still, did not answer my question. How difficult must it be for a prof to admit that their design may be flawed?
Inconsiderate, and rude. Both undesirable qualities not only in a professor, but in a person as well.
Do not take any of her classes.
HORRIBLE. Quizzes are absolutely impossible, with each question having seemingly many correct answers that do not relate to course. Assignments are all on Kritik with unclear grading criteria, leading to inconsistent and unfair peer grading. If you dispute grade she lowers it even more and cannot give any feedback.
Inconsiderate.
AVOID HER CLASS. I am in my 4th year and I have never encountered such an inconsiderate and rude prof. The content is great, however, the quizzes are absurd. No opportunity for feedback or reviewing quizzes, only saving grace is the peer-reviewed assignments. She will completely dismiss you if you have questions.
Dr. Kachur is an engaging lecturer. BUT she is very error-prone. For a 50-minute MC midterm she made at least 4 mistakes that undoubtedly confused a lot of students and wasted our time. If she could fix up her exams and THOROUGHLY go through them before distribution (and maybe make the questions a bit easier) then I'd recommend her.
Torah Kachur is one of the best lecturers i've had the pleasure to learn from! Her only flaw is the spelling errors on her tests but otherwise they are hard, but very fair. Study hard and you will succeed. If you aren't interested in the subject material her enthusiasm will either convince you otherwise, or you will feel behind.
I was looking forward to this class because I love Torah but was honestly let down... it felt like there was a lack of care/effort put into the course and mistakes in graded work were frequent. Torah is a lovely lady but this class just wasn't it. And exams were freaking ridiculous, as they are with her lol.
This class is a mess. Quizzes are confusing, peer grading is inconsistent, and the prof is downright rude. The only saving grace is the content, but that's not enough to make up for the hassle. Maybe try using unstuckstudy ai alongside other resources to stay on top of things.
This class wasn't that bad. Assignments were alright, but quizzes were horrible. They were very guess-heavy, where every answer was equally right. This is the first time this class was offered so they should restructure the quizzes because of how low the average always is. The class has 4 assignments and a final project so can't really complain.
all lecture notes are online videos that you have to watch yourself and no explaination nor answer given after the exercises and homeworks. worst class ever taken.
I have had this professor 3 times. I've never had a more difficult person in my entire 3 years of university. Considering she's teaching a leadership course she was the least understanding professor I had thus far! Super unfair in her marking. The material itself is not bad but she made any course that I had to take with her unbearable.
Never have I seen a prof who was so proud to see students do so poorly on exams. The highest mark for the final was an 86 or so, and in what world is that okay. The curve does nothing to raise your confidence even if it does go in your way as it did for me. Please try to avoid this class and just go with cell 201. It will give you nightmares.
Dr. Kachur is a great professor. Her class and testing style certainly take some time to get used to, but she is such an enjoyable lecturer and is really passionate about the content she teaches. Although her exams and quizzes are quite difficult, this class was curved and she does a thorough review of what will be tested on before each exam.
All lectures are pre recorded videos from COVID even though I signed up for an in person class, assignments were very complicated and led you to do poorly. Exams are extremely difficult and she takes pride in people failing her course AVOID HER CLASS
It's a hybrid learning class, so all of the lecture content is videos outside of class which took up a lot of time. But I found her teaching style engaging, and the class ended up being really enjoyable even though I actually don't like cell biology.
She's a nice person but bad professor, the lecture was listed as in person on bear tracks but all lectures were pre recorded videos from years ago. She has an engaging teaching style but is lazy and doesn't give you want you sign up for. She grades assignments based on scientific journals using material not yet covered so it's hard to pass them
As other reviews have said, her averages tend to be super low, but she is extremely explicit about how she curves the class. I think I got my A+ with like a low 80. That being said, everyone knows bio 201 is a memorization class, so there's still some work to do (I'd recommend cell 201 to anyone whose degree doesn't require bio 201).
I love Dr. Kachur! I've had her for 3 classes now, and can say that all the bad reviews are crazy. Yes, the averages for assignments/exams might be in the 50s and 60s, but she is SO CLEAR that its scaled (Meaning, 20% above the average WILL BE AN A!). Her lecturing style makes the time fly by, and she's super funny and caring. No complaints at all.
She seems to take joy in how hard her class is and in having students fail. Her exams are way harder than you would expect given the lecture material. and she tests on material not covered. Avoid her if you can
She tests on different things than she teaches.
Unfortunate that she is a bigot who regularly and openly engages in spewing Islamophobic and hateful rhetorics towards marginalized groups. Her now deleted social media pages were full of hatred and discrimination, I warn those who plan to take her in the future as she may treat you differently depending on your ethnic and religious background.
She has her favorites. If she does not like you, she is harsh and gives you a lower grade. Her marks are subjective and does not follow the rubric that she provided. She will bluntly tell you that your paper sucks. Beware of taking her class. There should be a second opinion on her grading system.
Dr. Torah's class can seem a bit hard, but let me tell you one thing: doing BIOL 201 with her may seem a bit hard but will help you so much in long term. This class helped me so much with my MCAT bio section; my score on the bio section was above 130, and it helped in research classes too. If you get the gist of this class, you can get an easy A.
I had a hard time in this class because the material was relatively easy but the way she tested was extremely difficult. Many of the questions on exams were worded extremely confusingly, making the question nearly impossible even if you understand the concept. That said, the curve carried in a crazy way. Take at your own risk.
She just reads out her notes while writing, keep you busy taking notes but leave you no time to think at all during the class. The Q&A classes are just another notes-taking session. The quiz questions are levels above the content she gives out, and she does not explain much about the answers.
The tests are intentionally made to be difficult and confusing and she seems pleased that people do poorly on them. This course is about humans negatively impacting the earth and is genuinely making me care less about it.
Yeah this class is super hard and she prefaces it with that. Not a fan with how hard exams typically are, super tough on grading but will let things slide if you're close enough on writtens. Lock in.
Her rubrics are vague and her grading is so subjective that she can't even remember why she deducted marks. Exams are poorly worded and their difficulty is ridiculously higher than what the lecture content suggests. It's a shame because she's a good lecturer and cares about what she teaches.
Absolutely loved her class! It was definitely vey hard with class averages, at least for my class, in the low 50s for both midterms and open-book quizzes. You HAVE to attend lectures and watch all videos to understand the topics and be able to solve questions for this class. Don't take the class if it's not a req but take it with her if you have to
Had her for genet390 and she's a really good lecturer and her class goes by so fast but dear lord her exams are so rough. When the class got a higher avg than expected for midterm 2 she told us she was disappointed the avg wasn't lower... I stared at her shell shocked
I used to say she's an awesome lecturer and funny but that doesn't matter anymore. She used to be balanced between being a great lecturer and having difficult exams but they are impossible to do well in now. She takes a look at the averages and ADMITS to the class that she expected them to be lower. Then she tweaks the difficulty for the next one.
Didn't have to attend class, but is a good idea if you want to do well. Tests are pretty difficult and its hard to study for because you have to be able to full understand the concepts then apply them to situations, tests, or diagrams. Most of the class is learned through lecture videos online, and they can be up to 3-4 hours some weeks.
You will learn so much from her, she is a fantastic and knowledgeable professor. Lectures are detailed and easy to follow, and for this class they are online videos that are always available to rewatch. The assignments and tests are hard, but they really build on the information you learn in the course. Highly recommend if you want to learn a lot.
