Torsten has almost a cult following at SFU, and I don't quite get it. He's a super nice guy, and I liked the course a lot, but he kinda bumbles around in a disorganized way. No hand outs at all-you need to copy down every bit of info (inc. sylabus). He's hot if you like Danish accountant types.

Torsten made my first experience with a 4th year english course very rewarding. The reading material he chooses is always engaging and his tutorials are always a blast. There is a reason why his courses fill up and he has a group of student stalkers following him around. I admit I am one of them. Can't wait for 313 this summer. Should be fun!!

I quite like Torsten: he's a straight shooter, even if, at times, he appears as organized as a flustered Easterner in a 1950's western. Despite that, he's composed. Here's the deal with him: there is no course syllabus. None. This can be frustrating for the uninitiated: just read the books, take some notes and relax. You're good.

Torsten is an okay professor, definitely not the worst I've encountered. His lectures, while interesting, lack so much structure. There's no slides and no audio recordings, so attendance is definitely important. The TA's are important for this course as they'll be marking your essays, and participation during tutorial is important as well!

Awesome prof and makes the course really fun. There were 2 papers and a final exam that was multiple choice and short answer. The final was real easy based on lectures and the stories that were read.

Lovely, lovely man who is very passionate about the content, but his lectures can be a bit hard to stay focused during. He doesn't use slides and goes on tangents often, but he's got a great sense of humour so they're entertaining. Dr. Kehler is clearly very knowledgeable but be wary if you're someone who can't stay focused. (Very kind guy though.)

He is an amazing professor but the only issue I had was how he had no control over his TA. If the class you're taking has no TA, rest assured that Torsten's amazing but be aware of the TA ones! He also introduces many books which are only available thru Amazon (I had to buy 4 books for $90 total).

Torsten rambles too much in lectures, and I found his final exam hard and the questions were stupid. Not sure how I was supposed to identify the speaker and play from one line. I guess I should have read the plays more thoroughly but overall aside from the essay writing (which I enjoyed), the tutorials and lectures were horrible.

Dr. Kehler's class was quite enjoyable! His hilarious lectures although long-winded, are packed with info regarding Hitchcock. He oddly prefers students to hand in essays via paper which felt detrimental since this delayed feedback in a course that only has two heavily weighted essays. Overall, you can't go wrong with Dr. Kehler.

One of my fav profs at SFU. Genuinely a great person. I had about 5 classes with him and I always got the grade of whatever the class average was (usually a B+) so I honestly think he just grades most thing at that level.

Dr. Kehler is awesome, but his lectures can get pretty boring. It doesn't feel like he has a plan for his lectures, he just sort of rambles on like how Michael Scott would. But he's kind, caring, and pretty funny. I have a feeling he'd do a lot better in an upper division course that has less lecturing, and is more discussion-based.

Torsten is very accommodating and open to giving extensions. We mostly watched films during lectures which saved us a lot of time and there were only a few readings. He only lectured a few times since the class was more discussion-based during tutorials. There was one group presentation but it was super easy and pretty much everyone gets a B or A.

He was very funny and accommodating (gave us extensions). Decent lecturer, but sometimes he rambles on about the same topic he discussed in previous classes and it ends up being very boring. Essay topics can be slightly vague (strangely worded) and open to interpretation. Loved the course content though. He did great in explaining everything.

Engaging lectures due to him going on slight tangents on things that are loosely related to the course readings (he really enjoys using personal experiences or funny hypotheticals to get his points across). The course was pretty straightforward for grading; your grades may depend on a TA more than him but my TA was nice so no worries there.

Honestly, I loved Torsten, he is an engaging storyteller and is clearly passionate about English. Sometimes lectures felt repetitive though, but it was always a good time so I didn't mind. Only complaint is that the marking is pretty harsh, and that he has no set notes, but overall the class is pretty low effort.

Great prof! Fun lectures (rambly like some others have said) but he clearly knows and cares about the texts and finds ways to make them relatable. I didn't find the grading to be as harsh as other people have mentioned; I heard my tutorial's average was a B which sounds...fine? Ask your TA for feedback/go to office hours and that'll help a lot too!

The profs a cool guy (pretty generous with giving extensions), and the course is pretty on par with what I expect English Uni courses to be. Just take the feedback your TA gives you to heart (they'll be the ones marking your stuff not the prof) and you can easily come out with a B or higher. Final exam wasn't too bad either as long as you listened.

Would never take this class. This class was meant to make us better writer but there was nothing that could improve our writing skills. During lectures, he would only talk about the stories.Essays are marked harshly. How can some expect to write good university paper when no writing lessons are provided in lecture. However,he is nice and funny prof

Great prof and I thankfully had a great TA too! Course material was easy and so were the essays, the final exam was a bit difficult but I still did well in the end! I feel like people who say the marking was harsh were just facing a reality check: a lot of people including myself who took the course weren't English majors.

Having no lecture recordings or lecture slides is outrageous, but that's his way of getting students to attend his class. I would be mad about this, but his lectures are hilarious and really engaging so I'm not complaining. His essay prompts and final exam is really straight forward if you listen and take notes in class. I love this man.

Talks about random things 85% of the time and only 15% being about actual course material. He says very obvious things like "keeping promises makes you trustworthy". Tutorials are very helpful, discussions in those will definitely help your understanding of the plays. His lectures do not provide a better understanding for course materials.

Dr Kehler makes jokes during his lectures which are funny. But he just talks and talks and talks, and usually goes off topic. The final exam for this class is easy... if you know all four plays by heart. He expects us to identify the passage by naming the play it is from, who said it, when, and why. The expectation is high for a first year course.
