I'm afraid I have to agree with the last comment. He's not a bad teacher, he's just so passionate about certain topics that he gets too far off the pointand he expects your papers to do the same-you can get a good grade but he wants u to write radical papers and I don't really agree w/that.

Most of the things he lectured on were pointless. Actually, the books he assigned to read were pointless. He assigned 2 essays which practically made up your grade, so I'm glad to say it was an easy class. But when he starts to talk about, say, BUSH, or oil, or BUDDHISM...you might as well get up and leave class because lecture has ended...

Through my wasted years at this institution Prof. Whelchel was one of the few professors here who wasn't blinded by politics. He challenged your thought process on many subjects through all of history and present day. One of the best classes ever.

I took his class over the summer. Very intelligent guy. I Actually couldn't wait to go to his lectures. This guy will change your mind about America. I hate history and now I'm a history major. If you like Bush then don't take this class. If you want to learn from a great professor take his class, chill with him after class to learn more. Very easy 2 essays, show up to class and you got an A. He made me want to go to school, I woke up early just to hear this man speak.

If you like being a conservative or Republican..be wary because the man says the truth. He attacks Clinton as well so don't think he's just biased. 2 essays and that's it. Pretty easy as long as you give him the feeling that you understand what he taught you. This class is for people who want to ask more questions not to just follow the status quo.

Toshio does like to voice his opinions but just because you don't agree with him does not mean he will gove you a bad grade. When writing my papers, I wrote what I thought on the subject and most of the time I disagreed with his view points. But I still got an A in the class. Just put an effort in your writing and you'll get a good grade.

Wow, very INTERESTING lectures. Doesn't go by "standard" history curriculum. Instead he focuses on stuff we generally don't learn. Only one midterm and final essay. I am taking this class on CR/NC but go just to listen to the lectures. TAKE HIM!!!!

One of the greatest teachers I've ever had in my entire life. He is a very influential teacher that actually gets you to THINK. Most teachers are there just to make a buck. But Professor Whelchel is different. He wants his students to actually LEARN something and become SMARTER. He is an influential figure, whom I will seek often for advice.

As a history teacher he is great. He takes examples of "Christians" of the past to talk down on Christianity and although I have a respect for him, I find it narrow-minded and ignorant of him to do that. In his class, please realize that not all that say they are Christian in the past, present or future, all are. Otherwise, his an excellent Prof.

I'm a former IVC student now at Berkeley. Whelchel's multi-disciplinary approach is very unique. He is not the traditional historian who bores u with facts; he makes contemporary references and often gets sociological in his analysis. He builds on critical theory, discourse analysis, cultural/subaltern/intellectual history. In short, he's amazing!

EVERYONE THAT GOES TO IVC MUST TAKE HIM!!! weekly assignments that can really pile up if u dont do it but basically easy take home midterm and final...you dont even have to read the books just skim through. Be careful when you read these reviews. Don't be fooled into thinking its an easy class. You will write at least 15 (500-1000 word) essays!!! This is not an easy A. You have to do A LOT of reading in order to do the assignments. Yet, the readings are really interesting and insightful. Keep up with those assignments and you'll be fine. He is a teacher who gets really into his lectures which makes things very interesting for the student. I enjoyed his class even though I don't like history. Just keep on top of the weekly analysis and read the books he tells you too and it should be good. This class does require effort though and has many essays.

I really enjoyed Professor Whelchel's class. His lectures were really extreme, but it was interesting to hear. There is a lot of reading and writing, but if I can do it anyone can. There are usually 12 document analyses about 500 words long, a midterm essay, a book review, and a final essay that is 1000 words.

He is willing to give a different perspective then what people are accustomed too. At first you will think he is delusional with his conspiracy theories but he backs them up with evidence. However, you can't take everything he says as the truth. You will need to have thick skin and take what he says with a grain of salt. Overall, a great professor.

B4 this class I had no interest in history & blindly swallowed propaganda, now I read all the time & have an opinion based on evidence. He's not concerned with whether or not you agree with him as much as he is you having an original opinion based on evidence. His door is always open & remembers your name long after the class. Easily a 5+!

He's a pretty bold guy, but I think it's pretty necessary with recent U.S. history. He will teach you what you never learned in high school. Very entertaining class, but there is definitely a LOT of reading and essays. Make sure you are willing to put forth some effort. He's an easy grader for essays. However, do not take a summer history class!

For the first few class meetings, you'll think this instructors crazy. But soon you'll realize that his one of the best professors at IVC. Essay for midterm/final & a book review. A lot of texts, so a lot of reading. He does not go over them, you need to read them. Do writing EACH WEEK, not last minute. He tends to rant all class (sometimes about topic, sometimes not) & is v. opinionated, but his lectures are powerful & educational. A very "fun" class. Will remember him fondly.

Whelchel assigns nothing but papers on top of papers. Be prepared to read 4+ books and to come to class everyday, attendance counts for a chunk of ur grade too! His lectures are interesting and I respect his P.O.V. but dont like his assignments, although he is a semi-easy essay grader as long as u follow the guidelines. overall an interesting class

Difficult class, because of the amount of essays assigned. Twelve 500 word minimum essays, One 1000 word minimum midterm essay, one 1000 word book review essay, and one 1000 word minimum final essay. He is very lenient towards you if you speak with him about you difficulties writing. May be offensive to some people, but ultimately he means well.

I love his class sooooooo much!! I know lot of people hate this class but these people are most likely, very conservative traditional Americans. He just teaches a TRUTH which is taught in other contries, but not in America. That's why many people take his lecture very offensively, but... THAT'S A TRUTH! Took both Hist 20/21. Passionate, good lecturer. One of the best classes I've had at IVC in 77 units I've taken, no joke. I'm a laid back person, and try to find the "easiest" way around when it comes to classes. But even with the crazy reading/writing involved, he's still one of my top professors. Take him. History 20 - I enjoyed the class. However, it is not an "easy" class. It is an excellent college writing class. Through the weekly readings and essays, one learns valuable critical thinking and writing skills. The class outline is clear and exact. I learned a lot from Prof. Whelchel. Prof. Whelchel is an awesome teacher! He is very passionate about everything he lectures on. The class is fairly easy, but you do have to work- read the books and write essays. You don't have to take lecture notes, although it may help when writing your short weekly essays. Essays are all the work you do- weekly, mid-term, and final. no tests.

Prof Whelchel is a free-thinking spirit! His class is honestly a piece of cake. Attendence is randomly taken like every other week and its 20% of your grade. A paranoid dude, for sure. Class is easy to pass with A or B if you just write what you were taught. He is extremely biased and narrow about what he believes but if you go submissive and just do what needs to be done you'll be fine. Don't get on his bad side or argue with him. He'll crush you and your grade.

He is the first teacher I have ever seen teaching real history, the history that you need to know. If you are open minded attend his class and learn, if you are not dont. very good instructor, teaches real history, teaches you lessons you need to learn from history. GREAT OVERALL.

I thought this class would be awful at 8am, but it wakes me up n keeps my interest. He gets into alot of taboo topics not taught in most classes. It freaks out some of the OC kids lol. He has you buy a few small books instead of a textbook, which are all pretty interesting. I'm enjoying the class so far.

Wow! Awesome Professor. He is hands down the BEST professor at IVC. He wants everyone to learn and succeed in life. He needs to get promoted to the Dean of the school.His classes are interesting and you will learn the truth about America.His ideas are exactly right, some students say it is farfetched but they dont know how to think outside the box

Professor Whelchel is for sure my favorite teach I've ever had. He doesn't bore you to death like other teachers, he actually is passionate about what he says which makes you care to listen. Whelchel's class should be necessary for graduation. All the bad ratings are from the kids who refuse the truth. If you are looking for an easy A, this class is definitely easy; however, if you are looking to expand your view of the world and learn something, show up to class with an open mind.

Loved him. This was the most view changing, stimulating course I have taken that has direct relevance to my existence as a person and as a citizen of this country. If nothing else, it will help you realize the importance of HISTORY and it's connection to the past, present, and future.

I have recently graduated with my BA. Looking back on my college career, Toshio Whelchel was hands down one of my most interesting, influential and impactful professors. I thoroughly enjoyed his teaching style and his honest approach to history.

Attendance is not mandatory. He is an amazing professor! Really funny. It is really hard not to pass his class. His lectures are great. Take him!

This is my favorite professor, the way he teaches is like he's telling you a story. He is HILARIOUS, and cusses which is even more funny. He got throgh his lessons early b/c we were so interested, make sure you keep up with weekly reading, NO TESTS, 2-3 in class writings, so FUN. Take him its so easy!! I did't like history until I took his class!!

Best class I have taken, ever... People may agree with his views or they may not. The negative reviews on here are from people who are unwilling to believe the truth. Go into his class with an open mind, do the two writing assignments, and you will get an A.

He is the real deal. The most honest and brilliant at IVC. To those who find him offensive must WAKE UP. Life is bigger than Irvine. I feel so PROUD, LUCKY and HONORED to be one of his students. Some of his classes are gone because IVC is trying to censor, we should be OUTRAGED. I want to go up to him after every lecture and just say, "Thank you."

Amazing professor. He's the coolest and most unique instructor at IVC. He speaks his mind and his view in history, present, and future. I took for for Hist 20 and 21 and earned "A" in both classes. He made every session fun and excited; I never missed any of his lectures. He will open you mind to a whole new world outside Irvine. A must take!

One of the best professors at IVC. His lectures were clear and to the point. I didn't miss a single class because they were interesting and relevant to today's society.

All I can say is, if you are going to take a history class, make sure you take Whelchel. In fact, every IVC student should take him.

He will give you an insight into the truth and background of American history and even conspiracy theories if you ask. He doesn't assign any homework except for Weekly Reading Summaries which are all due together at the end of the semester. Also, there is a mid-term and final which both include take home and a in-class essay which are both easy.

don't take this class if you're sensitive about politics Ha, he teaches history, you are presented with evidence and you can make the final judgement for yourself, yeah, metal detectors are at airports because TSA wants to find gold and not a gun.

Roughly 13 summaries for the readings and 2 essays (Midterm and final). The essays themselves were semi difficult to do. I recommend going to his office hours so he can look it over prior to turning it in. Very interesting class as well. Highly recommended!

He was awesome to listen. I am not a fan of history but he got me really interested in modern history. Easy class. Just show up and do the summaries to pass the class. He helps students to pass the class.

Talks about conspiracy theories, keeps class interested. No homework except for readings. Mid-term and final are both take-home essays. Very difficult to fall asleep in his class, as he is just SO INTERESTING and keeps you on the edge. Very friendly professor.

I love Whelchel. Definitely going to take all of his courses before transferring out of IVC. I've always known that he wanted his students to do well in his class, but this semester really solidified that thought. Interesting, chill professor who assigns very interesting books. He is one of the top history professors at IVC. He keeps you engaged. There are about a few in class essays and take home essays and the rest are just the summaries. Stay up to date with the summaries, dont fall behind! there are about 13 for the weekly readings. I received an A in the class. Just work hard and stay focus and you should be fine.

Toshio Whelchel is one of the top history professors you will come across with at the community college level, he is clear and on point, no b.s, very useful enlightening information that will take you back in time with years of experience you did not acquire. Highly recommend.

The class is very interesting, professor Whelchel did a great job teaching history from a different perspective. Grades are based off of in-class essays and take home essays. If you attend each class and turn in all your work you should get a good grade. Lectures are very fun and the material is covered very well.

Took History 21 this fall semester with Professor Whelchel and it turned out to be one of my favorite classes! Granted, waking up at 8:00 is difficult but Whelchel made it very interesting with his lively talks. Grades are based off mainly from midterm and final so make sure you read, I got a B in the class and I didn't put much effort in so yeah.

Basically no textbook required. Enjoy the class if you are taking it. But make sure you are doing your work. He is pretty lenient if you are an organized writer for sure you are getting an A. At the same time you will learn a lot! He's a great professor even though he could be a little bit subjective on his topic, but the class is very interesting!

Very interesting courses. I thoroughly enjoyed them and learnt a lot from Prof. Whelchel. Some of his prompts were a bit unclear, but he is always willing to go over it with his students. If you're not the typical OC dweeb, you'll definitely gain greater insight into the world of history. Easy B, but don't procrastinate on those summaries, kids.

This class was kind of difficult for me, but I learned a lot from Professor Whelchel. Not an easy A. I got a B in both classes. He assigns really great books. Go to class, pay attention during lecture, and make sure not to fall behind with the papers. I really learned a lot and loved taking his classes.

Class was pretty difficult. Make sure you can write well, grade is based on weekly writing summaries (about 14), midterms and finals are essays, 4 in class writing assignments. Class was really interesting but he does go off topic often. He's really helpful. Again, make sure writing is one of your strengths. YOU WILL NEED TO BUY ALL BOOKS (4)

attending class is somewhat mandatory. Cannot miss 2 consecutive classes.4 in class writings, open book and are given the prompt a week before. you get a 100% just for attempting. do the weekly summaries. final and midterm are based on readings.

Class was pretty awful. 15 weekly summaries that are due at the end of the semester, and the books are really boring. Mid-term and finals are essays. He expects amazing work when he asks very vague questions on the midterm and final. 4 in-class assignments that are 5 points each. Only took the class because a friend recommended him. Bad choice.

This professor will make you like history by the way he teaches, very interesting and funny. Tests are not hard, just have to read the lectures that are assigned for the test, otherwise weekly lectures are not even checked, so it becomes optional. English is not my first language and I got an A.

He's a really great professor. Despite going off topic very often (usually to rant about the government and talk about his crazy past), he's very insightful and might oftentimes use his past or philosophical ideals to help explain and emphasize points in his lectures. I definitely recommend his class.

His lectures are always interesting and engaging. He grades pretty easily as well.

Extremely easy class. Only HW is semester long analysis of a few historical articles. No tests. Gives a few quizzes that were just on reading. Quizzes were open book, you just have to write a paragraph analyzing the reading. Final is the same format as quizzes. Don't need to show up except on quiz days. Hates America, but very easy class.

Professor Whelchel's lectures are always something that I look forward to. They are consistently interesting and engaging . He mainly grades you based on papers but as long as you keep up with the reading, you should have no problem earning a good grade!

He is a good teacher. Very easy if you just agree with his opinions. His in class essays are super easy so dont stress out on it.

I used to hate history but after taking HIST 24 with Professor Whelchel, I've started to love it and will take another course with him this semester. His lectures are fun and hilarious and the only homework there is is reading and the weekly document analysis papers (don't worry, they're easy). If you love history (or don't), take his classes!

cool teacher. interesting lectures. 20 points for homework assignments, 20 points for midterm and 40 points for your final. for the tests, all you do is write a paragraph. they are open book.

The only thing I will say is that he makes me want to change my major to history, he's a really great teacher so much in his class.

For our semester, there were 7 one-page writings at home (which are the bane of all procrastinators), and the typical in class writing tests. 80% of the grade is just the 4 in class writings, so make sure you can write well! If you can write pretty well, then you can get an A.

By far one of the best professors I have had. His lectures are long but interesting. Almost makes me want to change my major to History! Definitely will be taking another one of his classes.

Set in his mindset but willing to let you have your own opinions. Lecture based class. 2 in-class writing assignments, 1 midterm, 1 final. Tells you which chapter of which book it'll be on. 8 one pg document analysis due before Thanksgiving Break. Readings and lectures are interesting and refreshing views on history.

Interesting lectures and books to read. He tells exactly what chapters from the book he wants the tests will be on.

I think Professor Whelchel is one of my favorite lecturers. He is funny, laid back, and make history bearable. I never knew history could be fun and I will miss this class, there are only several essay writing as the tests and that's it. as long as you do your job, you'll be fine.

A very passionate professor who knows his stuff. His lectures are amazing because he does not simply read off his notes but elaborates verbally. A very laid back, funny, entertaining professor, but DO NOT TALK IN CLASS during his lecture, he will get angry. 1 in-class essay, 1 take-home essay, 10 pages of weekly summaries, midterm and final exam.

History is not my best subject but Professor Whelchel's lectures actually were very interesting! There are a few books you should get for this class and I recommend actually reading them so you can do good on the in class essay, midterm, take home essay, and final. Connect his lectures to the essays and it will make life easier :P

Professor Whelchel is one of my favorite professors in IVC. His lectures are motivational and hilarious. He also doesn't take attendance and his lectures aren't necessary so the class is easy. The tests and quizzes are also open book and note so buy everything you need.

Love his lectures. Unlike usual history teachers, he doesn't believe in textbooks and doesn't make you memorize loads of information. He has a very interesting take on American history and it's not your conventional history class. He lectures the entire time telling interesting stories and it's worth going to class. The midterm and final are your entire grade and if you read the chapters before hand and know how to write an essay you should get an A.

Dr. Whelchel is by far one of the best professors I have taken and one of the smartest people I have met. He is extremely insightful, kind, and even if you are not a history major the information you learn in his class is extremely vital. He is very willing to help if you struggle but his class is so interesting you will want to show up to them all

Crazy and passionate guy, very informative and always interesting. I like history, but in the past I've had pretty boring professors. Whelchel keeps my interest every class, and his writing assignments are very easy. I would definitely take him again! He teaches you the uncensored version of history, and it can be pretty mindblowing.

Whelchel's class was a wild one. His lectures are honestly some of the best I've heard. He really goes into detail and he's mad funny. He does go over time but by like 5 minutes. There were only two tests in the class and they were both essays. Overall if you keep up with the readings you'll be in good hands.

Best class EVER. In class essay, take home essay, midterm, final. Homework due @ end of semester. One paragraph for each. Easy A if you try a LITTLE. Hilarious professor, mind-blowing lectures. Everyday is a comedy show, everyday will amaze you and teach you something new. If you pay attention, this class can change you (for the better). 10/10!!

Very interesting lectures and stories and the teacher is funny and cool. Grade is made up from 5 writing assignments. Midterm and Final are graded more critically. Giving effort and following directions on writing assignments will be beneficial. You will have a better understanding of history after taking this class.

If there is one thing that this class will leave you with it is that, History isn't just chronological, its YOUR Interpretation of the past. Get this through now, and you'll realize what the dude is trying to convey. His Lectures are wild and completely off topic however, everyone was always eager to sit in and be entertained. Enrolling at the beginning of the semester I was definitely not expecting what I got. He loves to RANT about the same topic for the whole hour, I honestly do not understand why he has slides. Other than that he is a cool guy & this class is an easy A. In class essay, take home essay, the final in class essay & document write ups THATS ALL!!!

This was the easiest history class I have ever taken. There is not one single multiple choice test. The only work in this class is reading a short document that is one page and then writing about 400 words on it. He is so laid back and very to the point. I cannot stress enough how easy this class was. Take him if you want an A.

He has fun, interesting and different history lectures. I'm not a hist major but I've learned the most history in this class in my entire life. Attendance isn't mandatory but I found his lectures to help with the essays. There are 5 essays to write & take them seriously and you'll do well. He is super fun, nice, understanding, & hilarious! A very funny, caring and understanding professor. I took his class for the sake of finishing my GE credits and only requires you to do 5 essays which I would highly recommend writing up ahead of time. And visit his office hours for him to proofread it if you want an A on it. Even though I took his class as P/NP it's actually an easy A.

Taking his class is a MUST! You will learn what they do not want you to know! You will see history from a completely different perspective. If you love immortal technique songs and you understand his message then this professor will be your favorite one! Love this professor. Funny and very very smart. He assigns readings from a variety of books and documents and a few writing assignments based on the reading. These writing assignments are your entire grade and his lectures only provide extra information. You only have to show up to get that week's reading, but I would recommend staying for his lectures

Professor Whelchel made me truly excited to go to class - his lectures are fascinating and illuminating, and he is passionate about what he teaches. He grades based on only a few assignments, but he grades easily. Unfortunately, he had to leave halfway through the semester, and I was disappointed I wasn't able to finish the class with him.
