An awesome teacher. You can tell he's really passionate about what's he teaching. He has the ability to make history interesting. His lectures are rarely boring and he can be hilarious. Super hot too.
AWESOME.
THese two classes had a midterm and a take home final. Pretty easy. Lots of notes, but he is an awesome guy.
Great professor. He really relates what he's teaching to our age group since he's still pretty yound himself. You can tell that he really enjoys teaching...plus he's not too bad too look at...not too bad at all.

Decent subject material, difficult to be unbiased. However, this professor used frequent slang and jargon to get an point across and then I was supposed to compile essays based on ebonics. Difficult to do, but I got an A.
Prepare for a hand cramp because he goes fast. Tests are not multiple choice. If you like your grade going into the final you don't have to take the final, nice perk if you ask me
looks like a Simpson's character. three grades in the class - 2 tests & a paper - final is optional, but if u do worse on it than ur worst test/paper then u can screw up ur grade. all tests are essay. not helpful or clear at all - jokes are lame.
Great teacher, funnt and knows his stuff. The notes don't really matter when it comes to the midterm and final. The tests are 2-3 essay questions each based on a separate reading. You get to choose one question to write about. Usually 5-7 pages long. Not bad at all! Would recommed!
My favorite teacher yet at ISU. Funny and laidback. I learned a lot. Challenging but fair. Very willing to help, lets you know he's here for you. Interesting lectures and enthusiastic. Got an A but definitely worked for it.
Pretty good teacher, makes the class interesting, discouraging to take this course under his instruction because all tests are essays..optional final though...i studied for each test and came out w/ a high B, good teacher but has high standards.
I've heard bad things about 111, but Dr. Reed made a class that could have been very boring fun and usually intersting. He really cares about his students and is also a very enthusiastic instructor. He actually took time to help me when I was having problems, which i surprising in a gen ed class. I would definitely take another class with him.
Great teacher! Lots of reading though
Lectures are interesting, well organized, and easy to follow. Books for class expand on lectures.Tests are essay exams, this should be expected for 200 level history courses. Gives review sheets for tests. Always willing to help and answer questions you have in or out of class. I would take both classes again.
I love Dr. Reed! He's super helpful and funny too. He's smart and down to earth and just a really nice dude. His arms are pretty nice arms too! He can be a smart ass from time to time, but usually he's just joking. Ya gotta love this guy.
If you go to class everyday its really easy he tends to talk a little fast but i really liked this class! he always made it fun!
He's my favorite prof at ISU and loved taking classes with him. You'll take a ton of notes which come in handy for the midterm in 257-258. Finals are take home 5-7 pages. 309 was a topics course that I loved. Overall he does anything he can do help you-Really nice person. Just don't lie to him or cheat using online sources- he'll catch you!
He is better than some screw ball professors who do not stand or at least sit in front of the class and teach. He does cover the material he tests on but not in as much depth as he tests on. He gives lots of readings and because you do not know what you are looking for it ends up wasting time. Grade based on a pathetic 3 exam scores.
Dr. Reed likes to laugh at his own jokes and get really off subject, but he's a great prof. I feel the books he assigns are worthless, but def. take notes and use the study guides he gives. they are very helpful and he always is available and willing to talk to me if i'm having trouble or about anything else. i would take any class with him again.
This dude is hilarious and one my fav teachers. Out of my entire semester this was the 1 and only class I like. Attendance wasn't mandatory but he took it, so it'd be in your interest to go. You know what you're getting in from day 1. His tests are a bit hard but if you go to class and take notes you'll be fine...be prepared to write.
Love him! Funny and helpful.
all lecture, tests are all identifications, fairly easy, attendance is mandatory, hard to stay awake, don't always agree with his points of view, calls famous presidents and people "****s" alot, i dont always agree with what he says, but he knows what he's talking about. easy class. optional final, DONT BUY THE BOOKS!! you wont need them.
He really knows what he's talking about and keeps you awake. I expected for a 9:35 history class to fall asleep everyday but he makes it fun. Tests are all short answer/essay but lecture notes help a ton! The books though are useless.
I loved this guy. Not only is he very nice to look at for the ladies...he's very funny. He's young so he's definitely on the "cool" side of the teachers here at ISU. You have to go to class, but lectures aren't boring. The test are hard and you have to study..but it's worth it. Favorite class of the semester. Definitely take him!
Loved this class. Would take another class with him. Have to go to class but is never boring. He makes you learn about history but he makes it fun. Test are so so but if you go you will no the info for the test. Take any class you can with him.
Very clear teacher, makes lectures fun & interesting. Tests were easy, says you have to read the books, but as long as you go to class & take notes, you'll be fine! Optional final too!
I loved his class. He made it interesting and really related to our age group. The final is optional and we didn't use the books except on the one paper we wrote. I would definately take another class with him.
Don't really need to buy the books. I never used them, except to write the paper, but some of them are at milner. all exams are essay, final is optional. attendance in mandatory, miss 3, one letter grade down, but all you do is sign your name in.
Good teacher.
A very insightful and interesting teacher with a great sense of humor. He made what could have been a very trite and boring class worth attending and I ended up learning a lot more than I thought I would. His passion and knowledge for the material really shine through. A++
He is very insightful and knows what he is talking about. His lectures are funny and seldom boring. Tests are essay, so studying is a must.
Really knows what he's talking about. No homework except for one paper. The rest is just essay tests. He looks like Ari Gould from Entourage! Keeps the class interesting considering the boring material.
I'm really not interested in History, but I found his class interesting. He tries to keep the atmosphere in class pretty light. His tests are essay and you also have to write a research paper. Optional final. Relatively easy grader on tests, but he's not lenient on rounding up close grades at end of semester.
Fantastic teacher. Keeps the classes interesting and fresh, doesn't let boring lectures control the mood of the class. Favorite teacher in my college experience so far.
Good class. Lost a little focus at the end, but I liked the class better then because he lightened up at the end of the semester. Gave two take home exams and had an optional third paper. The comments were pretty helpful.
I really enjoyed this class as well as theteacher. THere are no mutiple choice test. But there are essay test. He makes the material really easy to understand so as long as you go to class and pay attention it is a fairly easy class. Once again that is only if u go to class
The class is not like six flags fun, but its lagit. We have already learned the majority of the information in high school which makes the class pretty easy. Tests are essay and there is 4 of them. He is knowledgeable and yes fun to look at. Reed is a good guy, if you are going to take this class take it with him
He is just awesome. He takes an interest in his students and what they want to do after the class. And, he makes the occasional **** jokes. Always a plus.
Took HIST 111 with him before and enjoyed it a lot. This class was really different. He seemed to be more in love with himself. Class is 2 papers all focused on the books assigned; this means you have to come for lectures but cannot use the material for the papers. He expects you to read and he'll tell you that over and over and over again.
He is very funny and makes lectures interesting. His tests are essay only so if you don't like essay this would not be the class to take. There is no homework but reading assignments are given. He does not check up on you, so you are responsible for everything. Overall, it's a good class but challenging if you don't study ALOT.
Reed is a great teacher and does things to keep the class awake. The tests are somewhat hard and are based on writing.
A cool guy who knows his stuff. Your grade is divvied up into three essay exams with an optional final exam, that's it. The exams aren't all that hard as long as you go to class (which he requires) and do the study guides.
Great professor! Favorite gen ed i have ever had. Dr. Reed is a challenging teacher. His tests are all essay but you really learn alot. You have to put the work in for his class but his lectures are great! I looked forward to going to his class. Funny guy and really showed he was interested in the subject. He knows his stuff!
He was pretty cool, you just need to go to class and take good notes. It can get really boring, but he tries to make it interesting. He was really helpful if you ask and he seemed to be a bit full of him self. Overall, go to class and listen and you can get an easy B.
Dr. Reed is a great professor and has a lot of knowledge about his subject. It is very lecturey, but he tries to make history as interesting as possible. He is always willing to meet students after class. Attendance is mandatory since your grade in based on two papers. (no pressure tho, lol jk) Pay attention, attend class you'll be fine.
Dr. Reed was a good professor, easy to pay attention to because he's funny. Class attendance is taken, and is mandatory. Pay attention and take good notes and you're guaranteed at least a B. After the first test he gives you the 3 possible essay questions as study guides which is nice. Don't buy the books.
Reed is a hilarious teacher who's always fun to be around. Attendance is mandatory and documented. Only grades are attendance and two major essays. He gives 3 or 4 essay options to pick from. ABSOLUTELY make sure to read one of the books before the essay so you can be prepared for at least one of the questions. Always willing to help on essays.
Reed is a great professor. He makes the classes fun even though the material is pretty boring. Class is manatory and frankly you are just hurting yourself if you dont go. Take good notes and the essay tests will be a breeze. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS! I did not look at them once and got an A. Take this class if possible
Dr. Reed is the man! If you want to learn how to write, then I would highly recommend these classes. Very funny dude and really he knows his stuff. Class is based on 2 essays and attendance. Is always willing to help if you go in and talk to him. 257 kinda boring but 258 well worth it. Highly recommend both courses.
Dr. Reed is a great and fun teacher. He makes classes interesting and jokes around a lot which breaks up the monotony of class. He is very understanding, although class attendance is mandatory, its not a struggle to sit through the class. overall great.
literally 3 tests only but his assistant grades a little difficult. total bro class is interesting to say the least.
Dr Reed is a FANTASTIC professor, very humorous and willing to accommodate any concerns or questions. His lectures are a mixture of vague and in depth- at times his notes are vague and the textbook reading is a necessity, at other times his notes are superb and reading isn't super needed. Only downside is NO POWERPOINT so if you miss something...
Dr. Reed is fantastic. His lectures are amazing, and he makes his class interesting for everyone, despite their interest in history. I learned so much from him, and would highly recommend this class. I didn't use the books once and got an A. He also will boost your test grade if you visit his office hours. He's a great guy and is easy to talk to.
He's a good teacher and really funny. I never payed attention in class and when it came to the exams I just wrote like I knew what I was talking about. He grades pretty easy so no reason why you wouldn't get a C or higher.
Hands down my favorite non-major related professor at ISU. I don't like anything about history but Dr. Reed managed to make every lecture interesting. Very funny and nice guy too. The whole class is 3 exams and an optional final. You're only allowed to miss 3 classes before penalty. Very glad I got him, probably would've hated it with anyone else.
This class is not an easy gen ed, but you should get an A or B if you put in a lot of work for it. You will learn a lot in this class, but make sure to always come to class and pay attention. Visit during office hours to get help and boost test grades. 3 essay tests make up your whole grade.
To start off with I'm not a fan of history so I already didn't enjoy the subject material. He is an interesting guy and tries to keep the class interesting. Sometimes it leads to him going off on random tangents and telling stories that end up making the lecture rushed at the end. Reading the books are not necessary but I think it helped me.
2 tests and 1 paper, and an optional final is the ENTIRE grading criteria for this class. He expects a lot from this General Education History class. You must go to class because he will deduct points if you don't. He lectures for a very long time and honestly it just a "blah" class. Wouldn't recommend because I didn't find it interesting at all.
Structure of class is 2 essay exams, an essay, and an optional essay final exam. He is a great lecturer and keeps the lectures entertaining. He is also very liberal and will make it known. He grades tough but if you work hard and do the readings an A is attainable. Attendance is mandatory or your grade will be deducted. Solid class.
Course is graded on two papers and attendance. Lectures are essentially meaningless when it comes to the papers. The papers are based on textbooks assigned. Lectures are greatly entertaining; containing personal stories and educational experience. Would recommend.
Cares a lot about what you learn and how well you learn it. No power points just lectures for the whole class, but is able to make it very interesting. Is a super cool and funny dude. His tests are essay test so you have to make sure you know the material. Hard class but rewarding with actual knowledge.
Pay good attention to lectures b/c there is no powerpoint, just a outline of main topics so you write down what you think matters. Got an A w/out using books much but referencing them on exams will get you more points. He makes lectures interesting but material can get a bit dry. GO TO STUDY SESSIONS, the TA runs them and they grade the exams!
I cant even begin to say how phenominal Dr. Reed is! When I signed up for His 111, I thought it was going to be just another boring history lecture. But then I was happily surprised by how much of a passionate, caring, and hilarious man Dr. Reed was, and how much more I found myself wanting to attend history class! You wont regret this class!
I loved this class. I usually dont like history but a lot of the information he gives is very interesting and hes good at telling stories with the lecture. Doesnt use powerpoint but its a great chance to get used to listening and taking notes. Hes also easy to talk to and very funny, easily approachable.
Dr. Reed really cares about his subject and is a hilarious lecturer. He has a tendency to go off on tangents, but he always gets back on track and gets through the material. The tests are all essay tests and are worth 90% of your grade, with participation counting for ten percent, so make sure you know the material by test time.
He knows a great deal on Af-Am history. The lectures have SO much content to you have to listen and show up. His lectures make you question things and search for answers. He is very funny, drops the F-bomb a lot. Class is based off of 2 papers and attendance (you can only miss 2 classes). You will learn a lot in this class.
He looks like Obama on steroids. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. By far my favorite professor of all time. Hes hilarious and I loved attending his lectures, he makes everything he talks about interesting. Lots of funny stories.
The class content is boring but he makes it interesting. There are no powerpoints so for the material you have to listen to closely & take notes. Grade consists of 2 essay exams (really easy) I studied for them the day of and received an A on both. He gives a study guide for both. Final is optional. Also have a 3-4 page paper. I recommend!
He is one of the funniest teachers I have ever had. Great lectures which he keeps very interesting, they provide background for the readings. Normally five books to read for the class, and you write two papers on them (which are the only grades). You have to be serious about the papers and put in a lot of work but it pays off
Attendance is not mandatory but he does ask that you type and print an excuse for why you missed class. As far as the class goes, it is actually pretty easy. there is no homework. your grade is comprised of 2 required essay exams (he decides long or short), 1 paper (4-5 pages double spaced), and an OPTIONAL final, and he is HILARIOUS-one of the best
Dr. Reed is incredibly intelligent, funny, & his lectures are engaging. Get ready to want to eat the rich! Capitalism fueling atrocities is a recurring theme. Attendance is taken every class and he expects typewritten explanations every time for why you missed, and you can't do that more than 3 times without point deduction.
Love Dr. Reed. As others have said, he makes the material interesting. This class became my favorite when initially I thought it would be my least favorite. Only complaint would be that he doesn't really follow his dates. Sometimes you expect to be having a discussion that day, but it's just another lecture.
My favorite professor Ive had so far. Doesnt take any crap, so do your work and youll be fine! He makes long lectures super interesting.
Dr. Reed is an outstanding professor and will always do his best to ensure you receive the help you need to understand the material. His lectures can be dry at moments but he always finds a way to keep you interested. By far the best professor I have encountered.
This was by far the hardest and worst class I've ever taken. Dr. Reed is very one sided and requires A LOT of reading. Very hard grader with few grades and a lot of papers to write. The lectures never go with the assignments and Dr. Reed will call you out constantly in class. STAY AWAY IF YOU CAN!!!
As a history major, reading, writing papers that are weighted heavily, & lectures do not bother me. Reed is pretentious & loves to talk about who he knows, digressing from the subject matter constantly. He tries to be funny, cusses a lot, and is not willing to put in the extra time for the students who struggle; he does not care if students succeed
Dr. Reed is one of the better History at ISU I truly enjoyed him he was funny, kind, and thought provoking. He really knows what he's talking about. We are graded on 4 things 2 essay (1 is short) 1 small group discussion(not as scary as you think) and participation. It's a great class a semi-tough but fair grader. You won't regret taking him!
Dr. Reed is an outstanding professor! Lecture & prep heavy but he makes discussions enjoyable and is really knowledgeable on the topics. Only 3 grades but all 3 are tests. Makes an effort to get to know his students, may seem intimidating at first but he's really awesome. This ended up being my favorite class & it's absolutely worth the hard work!
Dr. Reed was one of the best professors Ive ever had! His lectures were always engaging and he was also easy to get a hold of through email and especially when he had open office hours! Just make sure that you do the readings and read the text before class and youll get no lower than a B .
If you take this class, avoid this professor. Your grade is based off 3 exams and if you do poorly on at least one, your grade is not gonna be good. Have to write essays for exams and he cusses way too much, which is unnecessary. Also if you miss so many classes, your grade will drop a letter grade.
Dr. Reed has been the best professor I have had at Illinois State so far. His in-class lectures are entertaining, and is an incredibly approachable person. I recommend taking HIS111 with him for sure.
Dr. Reed is very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about. His lectures are very engaging and very interesting, making the required written papers very thought-provoking and stimulating.
Prof, Reed is top 5 professors at this university. Reading are straightforward and he provides lecture recordings. takes notes, listen and participate in lecture, that's it 5/5 medium easy class
Professor Reed is a nice individual who does want the best for his class. However, if you are not book smart in the terms of understanding the concepts discussed in the course, you may have a harder time. There are no multiple choice exams, quizzes, assignments, extra credit, etc. The course is based on three papers with no prior assistance. :)
Dr. Reed is very knowledgeable in the history that he teaches. His lectures are very interesting and intriguing. I would defiantly take him again as a professor, but he is a tough grader. And you will have to work for that A on the papers that you are graded on. Participate and listen to the pre-recorded lessons and you will do good.
He is very chill, pretty funny, and when it comes to teaching, it is clear that he cares. However, I still don't understand why he thought it would be a good idea to give almost 2 hour long audio recordings to take notes on. I simply skimmed/skipped through, but I still found it to be a lot.
If you want to take a participation heavy class with a professor who enjoys humiliating students if they're wrong, take him! I was so excited for this class, and was extremely let down.
this was one of my favorite classes I have taken at ISU! Dr. Reed knows his stuff. I learned so much in his class! Granted, the homework requires several hours per week. But you only have to go in person one of the two days each week, so that is really nice. Overall, I love the way Reed runs this class. He is very knowledgeable about this topic!
I will not lie, this class is one of the harder classes I've taken at isu. Dr. Reed is extremely intelligent, which can be intimidating at times, but his lectures are interesting and he genuinely makes me laugh. Personally, would not recommend for shy people, you will get called on.
I was excited to take this, then extremely disappointed. DrReed is an incredibly smart man who knows his stuff, but his teaching style is just awful. He brags about not reading emails, ridicules students in front of the class, and will make fun of you if you don't answer something the way he wants. Extremely difficult class if not a history major.
This class was difficult, but as long as you show up and do notes you should be able to get a good grade. He knows his stuff. Good class if your a history major.
Dr. Reed is awesome! He is a bit of a tough grader and there are not many grades to go in the grade book, but I was always interested and entertained by his lectures. If you are a history major and looking for a 200-level, I would recommend! Only have to go in-person once a week and you get a couple of excused absences for the semester.
Although I took this class as an elective, I ended up learning a lot from him, and the lectures were engaging. He also managed to learn a lot of the 100 students' names.
The syllabus is crucial for this class, containing all necessary course details. Attendance makes up 50% of your grade, emphasizing its importance; attending lectures is key for a good grade. You'll also need to write three papers, easily achievable by taking lecture notes.
Dr. Reed is very funny, you can tell he's intelligent. More than half of the total grade in this class is attendance, he'll make you sign something every class period to prove you were there. So definitely show up or don't take this class. Only 4 essays, each 2 pages long, super easy. I would recommend for a history gen ed.
The class was very interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. You are graded on attendance and all assignments are P/F. You can tell that Dr Reed is very passionate about the class which makes it more interesting.
An Amazing professor makes class fun and really makes you think, easy papers, easy to pass.
Dr. Reed is a great professor. He's personable, makes lectures interesting, and takes his class seriously. Half of your grade is attendance, and there's three required papers. However, even though the final is listed as optional, it is required if you want to get an A. Overall, enjoyable course.
Graded pass/fail on three short papers, and attendance makes up half your grade. Go to class and do the work and you'll do just fine. He's a great lecturer and does amazing with explaining historical concepts in an easily memorable way. This is a great first-year Gen-Ed for those who want an interesting class!
Engaging lectures and knowledgeable professor. Attendance is crucial, but manageable workload if you stay on top of it. Unstuck AI proved helpful for efficient note-taking and exam prep.
Dr. Reed is an amazing professor - I HIGHLY recommend taking as a gen ed!! His lectures are incredibly engaging, he's really funny, and coming from someone who doesn't enjoy history, I look forward to his classes every week. He has very fair and clear expectations; as long as you show up to class and do the required essays, you'll pass no problem!
Dr. Reed is an amazing professor - I HIGHLY recommend taking this as a gen ed!! His lectures are incredibly engaging, he's hilarious, and coming from someone who doesn't enjoy history, I look forward to his classes every week. He has very fair and clear expectations; as long as you show up and complete the required essays, you'll pass no problem!
I liked him when he was giving the lectures; he claims his class is "discussion-based," but that's not true. This is one of the worst discussion formats I've seen. He knows how to lecture and give out information, but does not know how to let others do the same. Very knowledgeable but does not know how to let others share. tough grader.
He knows what he's teaching extremely well, and is highly educated on every lesson you will learn. Socially though, he is very full of himself and will mention books and articles he's written and always critiques when students try to engage on his lectures. He's fine, he tries to be funny and direct but can be overbearing. Attendance is important.
