She's a great prof.. that's all i can say. ^^
Great teacher; the best prof outta all the bio 112 teachers
No Comments
Very clear prof, good use of analogies I would work on graduate studies with her
No Comments
well prepared and makes lectures interesting
Classes are interesting and well prepared.
Good teacher. Good explanation. HAVE to pre-read.
She is a great prof! Not boring at all! ^^
Very helpful... she makes microbiology fun!
Best prof ever! But tests are quite challenging. Interesting lectures
Way better then most other Micb profs.
she's a good prof but the midterm was HARD!
good prof ;-)
very clear and understandable, but killer midterm and exam!
Good Prof, hard exams
very good teacher, but exams r too tricky.
jodie foster look-alike
not helpful at all
i found her extremely boring..lame jokes..lecture content was ok though
she is the best prof in biol 112 :-)
Midterm is toooooo hard!!!
Good prof, so patient and nice
Challenging, but BEST prof ive ever had!
Had her for 3 courses - lets you know exactly what she expects.
This course was a joke, but Dr. Kion led interesting lectures.

best prof ever had so far
Good lecturer. Course was awful.
HARD COURSE...avoid this unless you're in life science
Nice person with clear notes and fair exams !

I think she is totally cool... easy to understand, too bad exams are HARD
my fav prof...wonderful lectures...except biol 112's pace was too slow
Kion is the best teacher for Micb. If you have a choice. Choose her. Not only is she nice and eager to teach but also cares about the welling being of her students. She is one of the few profs at UBC that give a damn about her students
the best micb prof. way better then the other prof...uh... whoever her name was.
Very nice and considerate of students...clear and helpful
Really nice prof who explains materials well.
very nice and cool lady. very hilarious and keep the class entertaining. she knows and explains the material very well..i don't think there is anyone better than her for this subject.
clear notes, good lecture, but exam is hard
shes alright but its pretty boring though. and the notes she writes aren't complete.
Kion is a great prof. She has a very extensive knowledge on the subject, she explains material well, and she uses good analogies to make the more difficult ideas clearer. However, her exams are HARD. You pretty much need to memorize the entire book.
The material is pretty intresting, but the tests are pretty tough. You have to MEMORIZE the entire book. For get what they say about learning the "concepts." The tests have A LOT of specific questions that are just regurgitation!
Very Clear Very helpful. Hard exams. But people in general do well, 72% avg for my midterm... don't know about the final. My suggestion is, dont think soo deep into the stuff, you will confuse yourself quickly, study, and follow common sense bascially.
You should choose her!!!
she's nice, reasonable i guess, but her notes are horrible in my opinion.
Easiest course ever! Got a 96%! So easy..I can't believe how people can do badly in this class..
she has horrible notes, lecture is kinda boring too. last half of the course is hard.
she is so hot!! i couldnt concentrate.
She is the most helpful prof EVER ! her class is so easy the PRS are like for morons !
The course is difficult, but Kion tries her best to make you understand most of the concepts. Overall a good prof.
This isn't the easiest of courses. It seemed like she expected alot of us to develop the same level ofknowledge for bacteria as we have for plants/animals and that just isn't possible. Not a great way of teaching
her notes are like everywhere! Some are in my biol red book, some are in my small notebook, they're just everywhere... didn't even bother to look at my notebook for the finals, coz it was so messy.. fun prs, but she has a monotonous voice! a nice prof!!
she is a good teacher, even though i always fall behind on her class. the most impressive once is the day before my final, i spent 3 hours in her office, she gave me lots of help and some sincere suggestion on my later study. thanx, doctor Tracy.
So tricky on PRS - but a nice lecturer.
her midterms and finals are really hard..very tricky....easy to fail in her class...
Great prof. Tries her best to answer all questions.
man to the profs want u to fail this course :(
prs quizzes are really easy, but the tests can be kinda tricky if you don't know the problem set questions well. apparently a lot better than some of the other bio 112 profs.
Great prof. Gives out interesting lectures but exams can be tricky.
Course itself is hard. She's a decent prof. Tries to explain things better. About 90% of her PRS quiz questions are easy. Midterm and final = open-book = very hard. Keep up with the readings and stay organized! (overhead notes are disorganized)
Very very hard midterm and exam!! Lecures didn't help much... Well, on a happier note, eventhough I didn't pass the final, I still passed the course!! So, don't give up!! =)
This prof is so tough that not many of you can pass her course.
Course material is interesting. If you organize your thoughts (try to see the whole picture), you can do very well. Her prs quizzes are extremely easy. During the midterm and final, use logic and reason - not intuition!
Sometimes hard to understand in class, writing can be a little messy but she tries to explain things as understandable as she can, posts practice questions, handouts helpful, and she answers your emails pretty fast within 1 day. Exam tricky though.
makes the course interesting. exams are tricky but seems to be alrite compared to the other profs for bio112. but bio 112 is a hard course in general
Seems like a nice prof, talks in ok interesting manner. Some MC are kinda tricky, so beware! Make sure you read the readings before hand or you get behind like a snail.
Great Prof. Kind, Patient and very helpful. She tells you what you need to know exatly for the exams. Her tests are fair and sometimes easy. I recommend her class to everyone. She definitely makes MICB interesting
very good prof.. probabaly one of the best, u newbies saying that her course is the hardest ever probably because u flank everything else too... MAYBE IT IS NOT HER FAULT... blame yourself
Midterms are really tricky. In lectures you have no idea what chapter she it talking about, she just starts writing stuff on the overhead without anyone knowing what we are doing. Lectures boring. the only reason i go is for prs. Notes dont even help with studying cuz they are so dam confuzing!
She is sooooooooooo boring. And her stupid PRS questions are so easy you can get the right answer through without actually know anything. So much disgression from what is actually being tested. If monotone lectures make you fall asleep I would avoid her section.
Her class notes come at random and arent very organized but she seems to be one of the better profs from what I hear about the others. Best part of the lecutres would have to be the stories/current events which relate to course material, otherwise a boring, monotonous lecture.
She is really patient. Any problems, go and ask her, and she will answer them really well. Knows her stuff WELL!
not a very good prof, but itz bio 112, what can u say...the course is just hard
The course material itself was pretty hard, and the midterms and final that they profs make together are really tricky. Her fast writing and neverending notes in class kept me awake. At times jumped from place to place. A pretty effective teacher.
She is very clear in lectures. Gets cranky and intimidating when I ask her questions during office hours.
Dr. Kion is a good prof, she clarifies the notes on virology very well and really sounds like she knows what she's talking about beyond just the information contained in the notes. She holds review sessions before exams so that's a big plus!
bring colours with u, really works with the text, tells great stories, lectures less boring than the other profs
gd prof...
Very good prof. Presents materials lively and clearly. I thought her part of the final exam was quite hard. =)
The final is written by the dept so it's hard She can prepare you well for the final tho if you come to her lecture. Excellent prof. Engaging lecuture. Presents material in interesting manner. Witty
She's okay. She does know the material, but sometimes she becomes kinda annoyed and stops helping ppl. Her notes are pretty scattered, so it might be helpful to write down what she says, or else you might lose track later on. Sometimes, she gets really impatient, but she's okay most of the time.
She was quite boring, and doesn't explain the basics sometimes and leaves you confused. Her writings are messy, and she has corny jokes. But overall, lectures were understandable.
pros: knows material very well, attempts to be funny, encourages attending lectures cons: very hard, messy writing, inconsistent pace, can sometimes overkill notes, technologically inadept
Dr. Kion is the best professor in MICB202. She teaches the virology section of the course, which is the most interesting part of MICB202. Make sure you read + understand every single detail in the text and you will do very well on the final since it's all multiple-choice questions. It's way better than the immunology part-a nightmare!
Dr. Kion is an amazing prof. I have to say, I didn't get bored even once throughout the month and half of 3 hour lectures (although only twice a week)...But wow, did she do a good job of covering a lot of material in a relatively short period of time, without sacrificing the quality of lecturing. She's pretty funny too - best prof. I've had so far!
Hypnotizing lectures, but u can prolly still get A+ if you're smart, just don't freak out if u get 60% on ur first midterm.
Very nice prof. She tries her best to help student. reasonable test~~~
she's so into it i can't relate. like who really loves bacteria cells that much? but she's nice and has some okay analogies...not too bad of a midterm
She's a very nice professor, seems to have a passion for teaching, which is nice b/c not all profs do. I really recommend her for other first years like myself.
Nice Prof to have!
Very passionate about her field of study. However, TERRIBLE and unorganized notes, they do not relate to the exams at all. Very boring lectures, only class I'm tempted to skip. Would not recommend.
I like the course material and the prof- she's very knowledgeable about the subject. The only downside is that her voice doesn't vary in tone- so it's so difficult to stay AWAKE!!! I sat in the 1st row and still managed to fall asleep lol! If you're unclear on something, just go to her office and she'll totally straighten it out.
If you preread the custom text you will be fine, but you can't rely on the lectures to teach you the course. She expands on concepts in the text without first giving you the background knowledge. Her notes are fairly unorganized, although her verbal explanations are clear.
She is a very nice prof and knows her stuff. Talks about some intersting things in lectures, but there is no point in reading your class notes for the final. Just know the textbook thouroughly, because lexture topics are sometimes pretty irrelevant.
Lecture covers less than half of course content. If you don't read b4 coming to class you will not know whats going on. Lecures didnt really help, mostly just read the text to know whats goin on. The practice exams they hand out are very similar to the actual exams.

Boring... monotone. very helpful in office hours. Course is all memorization. LOTS of it.
Very monotone! I didn't like her style of teaching.
shes HORRIBLE i must say! just her voice can make u fall asleep..and her notes too! she goes through materials ever so slowlllyyyyyyyy and lectures are kind of useless
no coherency between lectures.. very confusing... goes between chapters... no sense of where in the text she will teach the next lecture.
very boring, monotone...all over the place..not reccomended
Her notes are useless, it is better to read textbook yourself. Although she tries very hard at teaching, students still having trouble undterstanding.
The course is pretty tough, especially her sections. Her questions are weird and hard.
She is very unclear and boring. Had a very hard time staying awake each class. Just read the textbook, Its got all the info you need.
She is a reasonably good professor but her overhead notes are alllllll over the place.. good thing she posts them online after. She is one lecturer who prefers to include extra information in the lecture not covered in the textbook. Makes it a little more difficult and you have to pay attention. Otherwise a fair prof and receptive to questions.
ehhhh pretty good prof course isn't too bad skipped 2 months of it but was able to self learn most of the material
She's the best microbi prof, uses interesting examples to get her point accross, relates material to the real world, much like exams do. One of the best profs I've had.
Great prof
Took MICB202 in the summer. She's a really good lecturer and prof, but the exam was kind of hard.
Kion was so great! She encouraged participation and interactive learning in a class of 150 - very impressive. Her movies were always so awesome. Sometimes got a little boring, but I think that was the subject more than her - I don't think you could ask for a better first year prof.
Bio is boring but she is pretty helpful and nice. Her notes on the overhead can be very long but I think students should be able to select wut is useful to copy down. Overall she is an okay prof.
her notes were useless and her voice put me to sleep. and she'd laugh every so often when there wasn't even anything funny to laugh at. the only thing i liked about her class was her movies.
Her particular way of teaching does not help me personally. She is all over the place with her notes writing down for us to copy. It is difficult to understand while you have to copy so many things and put them in so many places in a diagram. I did not like her way of teaching, it is unclear and not organized. She is nice though.
One of the worst profs I have ever had. She is only an instructor (only teaches) therefore you would think that she would be good at teaching, however she is not. She is boring, akward and gives useless notes. Much like BIO 112, her test questions are more about comprehending the question than actually knowing the material.
worst proff with worst possible notes ever. her notes doesnt even make sense when you want to go back to study so you're better off studying the text(which for bio112 is not that great to begin with). I took bio112 with her = biggest mistake of my life.
If you are a med school hopeful, you will love this course. Kion did a good job at explaining the textbook she wrote. Very good course, not really hard at all. Just put the proper time into it, and read the book over and over, and you will do very well...that's what I did, and I did great. GREAT COURSE!!!

Come on guys, she's actually a great prof. She is enthusiastic, clear, and makes up witty comparisons to drive home key concepts. She's an exceptional lecturer in my books.
I'm currently in her class. I did find her very nice and enthusiastic during lectures. But honestly, I didn't find her very approachable when I asked her questions. She was a tinge on the mean side actually to me and made me feel miserable and dumb. I won't, I can't let that get to me as I might end up with her next uear for Micb 202.
Bad notes
Her voice is a little monotonous but she is an interesting and helpful prof! She clearly loves microbiology and likes students with enthusiasm. Get this, she gave the whole class half the day off right before a huge chem 121 midterm! She gets my vote!
After an entire undergraduate degree, I can say that Tracy Kion is the worst professor I have ever had. She was disrespectful of students, not at all helpful, and relied very heavily on the textbook. She came across as feeling superior to all her students (and colleagues), made people feel insignificant, and wouldn't give you the time of day.
I am not actually enrolled in her class, however she really helped my bio mark. Her notes are okay, shows LOTs of demo clips, and she's nice too. Recommended.
Dr. Kion is a a pretty decent teacher for microbiology 202. After having Joice Gordon, I thought I would never enjoy biology again... thank god I never have to take Biol 112 again! That said, the one thing that I really LIKE about Dr. Kion is that she generally has a reasonable answer for every question that student ask. So far I am enjoying MICBI
She uses interesting examples to drive the point of many concepts home. I really liked her summary sheets and charts--really helped come studying time. I don't know what the complain about her is all about--I found her lectures to be entertaining and enlightening. Exam is fair.
I liked how she uses analogies and examples to help us understand the concepts being taught--makes understanding the concepts easier. Also, she makes study charts and tables for us--VERY useful when studying for the exams.
so very boring...hers was the only class i actually fell asleep in. not a very enthusiastic lecturer and makes bad analogies to american football.
She`s a nice person and pretty approachable, however i found it very hard to pay attention in her class. Having had gaynor for the premidterm, class seemed to go downhill from there. she does not post slides. She has handouts which are hard to follow during lecture, and overall just felt she wasnt an organized lecturer.
She seemed pretty nice and I like how she didn't rush through the material. However, her classes were extremly boring and I felt the course material was way too hard. I used to love bio but after taking that class I know I was not meant for it.
hard to understand not helpful during office hours if you take this section, u must read the text before her lecture.
Very easily understandable, and certainly a great teacher. Asks question in the middle for our attention. However, there was guy in our class who basically knew everything and became a spoiler during the whole term. I was in Dr. Ganon's course those who were there, know whom I am talking about!
I thought she was a decent instructor for MICB 202, BIO 112, until I now have Dr. Gold for MICB 302 immunology. In contrast, Kion is unclear, her explanations jumbled, although a decent instructor overall, just at a lower level of clarity. Also, when you go to her office hours, she seems very cold.
monotone, not very helpful, doesn't explain things very well AT ALL, should try to make sure class understands what she is teaching and saying, needs to make clear what we should read before going into the class, not clear enough, sadly, she doesn't know this, so she should read this. she needs to stop talking about ecoli :(
The BI112 material was boring enough to begin with.Kion made it painful. But she's great as a natural anaesthetic :) The only times when she held my attention was when .... oh never, actually. But overall she's a boring and unengaging professor :) I absorbed more info in the first 20 seconds of prep101 than I did during the entire term with kion.
This is the worst professor you will EVER HAVE. Her exams are the HARDEST YOU WILL EVER WRITE, THIS IS A GUARANTEE. Her lecture notes are absolutely useless, her goal in class is not to teach you but to put you asleep. I do not understand why she is allowed to teach at UB, her PhD should be revoked, I am serious when I say this, ruins uni experienc
Sometimes unclear and expects students to know information not in textbook or uttered in class. To answer questions on the bio112 final, it is required you know information that she did not teach and was not in the textbook.
definately the worst prof ever. She is very unclear and makes her exams impossible. she barely teaches instead expects you to know everything before attending class. Her exams are unfair and tends to ask questions that were never taught or in the textbook. Avoid taking classes with her.
so hard that I cried for seven days after my exam.
Having an amazing prof (Gaynor) and then transitioning to a terrible prof (Kion) completely destroyed my interest in Biology. Kion sounds, looks and has the attitude of drying paint. Her notes were useless and I learned just about nothing. The worst part is that you can't avoid her. MICB 202, here I come...
lectures were boring and don't expect to have fun in class, but she's a fair instructor overall. Her charts and notes are quite helpful. A thorough review of lecture slides and notes should get you a good mark.
The course material itself is not very hard to understand. The main purpose of going to lectures is to have a general idea of what is going to be the "big" topic on the finals. Lecture notes themselves are useless, so take notes from assigned textbook readings. Tip for the final, it's multiple choice, just cancel out the wrong answers, it works.
Not much to say. Course is fair if you study from the text. I recorded her lectures and played them at night to cure my insomnia. She's a nice gal.
Her lectures are full of useless (albeit interesting) extraneous material and she's a bit condescending. However, her portion of the test was easy and entirely out of the textbook. Don't worry too much about her portion of the class, but don't expect it to be great, either.
I don't understand how people say this course is easy. The materials are hard, people even recommend taking it in 2nd year. And Kion's lectures didn't really help at all. Too boring and dry, making this course harder to comprehend.
terrible prof. the course itself isn't so bad but the way kion teaches makes you want to fall asleep. shes not a nice person either. she always makes you feel like you're stupid and makes herself seem more superior by being rude. definitely do not take this course with her
just be sure to read over your notes and do readings, there's no way out of it
Easy class, it's mostly a repeat of biology 12, and a bit of new stuff such as the operons. She does PRS randomly so it's good to go to every class. I loved attending to lectures, her voice is mono-toned, lights are dimmed, and the seats in westbrook are extremely comfortable; perfect place to sleep, as I did for a good half hour each class.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about, I had no problems with her whatsoever.. perhaps it was because I took this course in the summer and had no other profs teaching it to compare her to.. but she gave you alot of different material to learn from and quizzes are super easy/basic.. tricky wording though. I was never once afraid to go ask
soo much hw!!!
Pretty good course. Just need to read the very cheap text that they sell you. I wish every faculty made texts as cheap! Dr. Kion is a good prof, clear, nice, friendly and personable. It is a thinking course so on top of understanding the material you will have to apply it. That means she'll throw some curve balls on the exams.
She's a pretty good prof. If you don't understand something, really, talk to her after the lecture or go to her office hours because she kicks ass at explaining things. Sometimes she can be scary, though, so... watch out.
I thought she was fair. Class average was low for the midterm. But I didn't think the exam was hard at all. It's just that they expect EXTREMELY detailed answer. You have to be a computer to get over 90. However, it's not hard to get over 80.
During multiple choice clickers, does not explain answer, however explains why other possibilities are not. Very monotonous. Does not pick students when they have questions regarding clicker answer.
Had her for Biol 112 and did not like her teaching style so was very hesitant in taking Micb 202 with her. I was surprised since there was a big turnaround. I understood her completely and she even made the material interesting. I guess it was just the material. Definitely a good Micb 202 prof, but no slides online so must go to the lectures.
This is a terrible teacher. She isn't a professor, only a senior lecturer and seems to have a bit of a chip on her shoulder about it. She treats undergrads really badly, and with very little respect. Her class is tedious and uninteresting. I would ask your department if you can take this course by distance from another university.
She's okay. Try to get another teacher if you can. She's monotone, so you fall asleep easily in class, which is kinda not a great idea for 112 since is so jam packed lol
I'm surprised so many people think she's a good teacher! She's ok, kinda boring.. She's prob a good microbi teacher, but not a good bio112. She can easily put you asleep.
Such an easy class, easy prof!
Kion is a really good microbiology prof, her lectures are interesting and I never nod off in her class. Unfortunately, the course and exams are designed by Prof. Bingle, so the exams are not that easy.
This woman is rather mean, and definitely has no interest in how the undergrads she lectures to do in A) her class and B) their studies in general. It really shows in her personality and the "chip on her shoulder" (as someone already mentioned). Avoid her if you can, but I think she always does 201. What a beast
Kion has absolutely no interest in how her students do, and if you approach her with a question or to meet over a concern, she completely snubs you stating that she 'can't discuss anything over email' and also is (in)conveniently never available for one-on-one discussion. Holds grudges over students who don't roll over and take her brush-off.
Definitely had reservations about Dr. Kion before starting this course (thanks BIOL 112) but was presently surprised by her teaching style. She taught the viral component of the course, presented material clearly, probably one of the harder viral profs but definitely worth it. Lectures very clear and interesting (if you like medical virology)
good prof. easy course material and explains everything in detail. clearly explains what to study for exam. midterm was super easy and class average was quite high but final was a bit harder.
I have a B.Sc. in Biology - was taking a 2nd degree at UBC, but got my med school acceptance recently (yay!). Tracy told me I HAD to take 112, DESPITE MY DEGREE IN BIOLOGY. Waste of money/time. Also: during an exam, I said, "Tracy, can I have my coffee cup with me?" She says, "That's Dr. Kion to you." I was floored, and lost all respect for her.
This is a poorly structured class that claims to have the best interest in student learning, don't expect their methods to help much. I learned more in Prep 101 than I did in this entire course! Kion isn't very good at simplifying the material, nor does she spend sufficient amounts of time on the important things. Hard exams.
I guess the BIO112 course is just structured awfully, because I was actually pleasantly surprised by her in MCIB202. Her notes brought a lot of clarity to my understanding and the exam was very fair. She can be intimidating but I think overall she is still helpful as long as you approach her in an extremely professional way.
She had extremely boring lectures and did not cover the material on the final exams.
You will get owned by her exams.
She is a good lecturer, but a poor professor. I have never had a prof who was so rude to me in office hours; she pays more attention to refreshing her e-mail than your questions. Dr. Kion definitely had no interest in students; we had to wait an abysmal amount of time to get our marks back even though it was all scantron.
Im suprised by all of the negative comments, though her lectures can be relatively dry she does make an effort to cover ALL the material on the exam. There were no suprises on the final or midterm, your mark depends on how much you study (there is a lot of material to cover). Over all I would a say a decent prof, definitely not the worst I've had.
Marking was quite fair and midterms were relatively easier but logistic than finals. Overall a good teacher.
Boring. Unclear. Confusing. Assume everyone is MICB major. Expect you to write 3-4 TYPED SENTENCE LENGTH to short answer questions on exams (which she didn't specify). I was all excited about immunology after taking MICB202 and she ruined the whole thing. Going to classes didn't help boost my grades since I went to every single one of them.
Lectures are thorough and slides are decent... but the course itself is more work than you'd think. You HAVE to study for the exams or you won't do well. As a person, she is kinda rude and was never friendly towards me or my friends.
Very helpful in class but not very personable
Very clear and engaging lectures, exams were tricky. Not very personable outside of class, but that did not impact the lectures.
Lectures are really clear and engaging, exams are fairly easy. Never spoke to her in person so I don't know about the comments on her personality...
Dr. Kion is very knowledgeable about the course material and her explanations of lectures were clear. Also used iClickers extensively. Exams were fair, plus she held review sessions before each one. Not always personable in office hours, but don't be deterred from visiting her; she means well and tries her best to answer all your questions.
I had her for MICB 201, 202, 302, 306. She has good lectures. Makes things interesting in 302 & 306 with the case studies. Gives you ALL the information you need to succeed. Doesn't lecture with lots of enthusiasm so it's helpful if you're really interested in the material. Answers questions well. Like I said- great prof, gives you tools to succeed
Dr. Kion is such a boss. Everything about her class is great. Great slides, great lecturer, very clear. Not always booming with charisma, but she doesn't need to be. Sometimes she makes jokes, and that's pretty fun. She answers questions as well as any prof I've ever had.
Boring prof, exams are hard and tricky, and lectures are useless. She just reads off the slides and goes off topic all the time. Only went for the clickers.
Slides have all the info you need, AND are not in jumpy point form. Tried hard to make diagrams easy to see by sometimes turning them on their sides (great if you print 4 slides to a page like me). Her first midterm had an annoyingly phrased question on it, so I didn't do well, but 2nd one I aced. I wish she taught the whole course!
Her slides have everything you need. The textbook wasn't very in-depth, but made the lifecycles clear. I also did the online quizzes (from the textbook by Carter+Saunders), which are really easy but make you memorize the details. Her exams were straightforward, and TAs were nice with marking. I learnt a lot about viruses and will miss this course!
We had her after Dr. Perona so her lectures were very dull in comparison but useful ppt slides. Midterm was fair but final was difficult. She is well prepared for class though and has extra notes on her slides that aren't in the course textbook that you need to know for the final. You need to keep up with your readings to get a good grade.
Tracy Kion is the absolute best. She is such an engaging, concise lecturer who really knows how to deliver tough material well, which was especially refreshing after Steiner. She made class time fly by. Plus her jokes are HILARIOUS, even though most of the class was unresponsive at 9am. I'm just sad we only had her for one section of the course!
Dr. Kion's lectures were pretty dry and did not leave me understanding the material well when I left class. She teaches the immunology portion of MICB 202 and it was my least favourite part of the course because of her. She's not a very approachable prof outside of class time. Exams were pretty difficult if you aren't normally a micb major.
Dr. Kion explains the material very well and her ppt slides are concise and easy to understand. Her lectures really help clarify the pre-reading. She gives memorable explanations (often using great analogies) to explain tough concepts. She may be a little aloof when you first talk to her, but keep approaching her with questions as she's great help!
This course was by far the heaviest course I've ever done in 5 years on university both at UBC and McGill. One midterm and one final weighted almost equal. Lecture slides are packed with info that she doesn't move through in a logical order. Textbook not "mandatory" but good luck without it... If you're looking for an elective course, MOVE ON!!!
MICB 202 was fine with her but MICB 302 is different, perhaps with the exams now being written, it is much more complicated. The lecture slides have similar presentation to 306 but a lot of the slides is "filler/too zoomed in" and you end up not really knowing what the slides are really talking about.
The Q's in 302 are more abstract/hypothetical or theoretical than 306. In virology, the Q's are straightforward and really just checked if you studied + understood each virus profile. But this study concept doesn't apply for this class. The questions are too broad, any answer could do, but TAs mark against the key.. I think3x more intense than 306
Verdict: If you are not a MICB major, do not take this course. I am an ISCImajor and it just ruins the entire thing for me. It's like she gives us textbook-amount info, and expect us to spit back the same volume of writing back to the exam. Immunology is complex, but this course doesn't have to be! Definitely hardest ubc science course I've taken
I had Dr. Kion for MICB 202 and 302 and I loved her in both. Her slides are great, she explains everything clearly, and she's very helpful if you go to her office hours to ask questions. I thought the 302 midterm and final were very fair in terms of questions and marking, nothing unexpected you just had to know the material.
It wasn't worth going to her lectures as there was no additional material, and she basically just skimmed over the slides. Exams were somewhat difficult and I found that the questions were vaguely worded often times.
your grade is pretty much your exam, each question is about 1% of your grade and its mcq. overall its just memorization of the textbook that is tailored just for the class. Tracy is a pretty good lecturer, she explains stuff pretty well, but her slides are quite lacking, so take notes fast! Reading the text a few days before the exam is good enuf
Her lectures were a bit dry. I found myself dozing off a lot of the time. Just read the textbook before coming to lectures & you'll be fine.
She handled the virology section, interesting material. BUT the textbook is much more entertaining, memorable and enjoyable than her dry lectures. She's pretty monotone and boring. All she does is read the lecture slides with a few iclicker Qs that didn't even count for participation. Honestly, the textbook is the only good and needed teacher
The lectures were very informative and fun. You learn a lot of applicable materials.
lectures are kinda boring because she reads off slides - info on slides are basically the same as assigned pre-readings summer 2020 online course final exam 25%, 3 topics (immunology, virology, bacterial infections) assignments worth 25% per topic (best 4 out of 6)
The lecture slides are detailed and thorough, but honestly, the monotone really bores me off during lecture. You can see students fell asleep if you sit at front row and look back. She tries to make jokes, but they are really dry. Dr. Kion is good at teaching, but not very good at the high tech tho...
Don't listen to these people. Tracy Kion is an excellent instructor. I got 93 on immunology assignments, 98 on virology and 98 on bacterial diseases. She taught the immuno and viro sections really well and the textbook is excellent
Lot's of assignments that don't touch on the topics covered in class. Her slides were heavy and very detailed and I believe they are adequate to learn from despite others mentioning to only follow the textbook. I received 100 in this class learning from the slides. She does not reply to emails in detail and there are mistakes on the chapter quizzes
Loved her!!! She is very insightful if you got to her office hours. She knows her stuff and does not trick you. Know your stuff, you will do fine. & do the practice problems!
Great prof!
I had Dr. Kion for Micb 201 and 302. When she talks it's a bit boring, but all the information is in the slides. The quizzes aren't that hard and neither were the exams
kinda boring and not that memorable. i think it was lacking excitement from me so i don't remember much. learned most of the course via textbook anyway
OMG her voice is so monotone. The virology section was the worst part of MICB202 because she did not do a great job in teaching - I had to teach myself all of it by reading the textbook. She is a nice person and a nice prof, but the lectures were really boring.
Her response to emails is so so confusing! Not very straightforward and definitely gave me a scare many times.
She doesn't explain the content in a clear way, I always leave lecture confused. What saved me was the course readings on canvas; if I didn't have those idk how I would've understood anything in this class.
Dr Kion made the virology section of this course really interesting. Her lecture slides are useful and all you need for the virology quizzes. Recommended 10/10
The class is very memorization heavy, and I dislike that. She is also very dry, but gets the information across. Classes were like nap time.
Great prof, lectures can be very dry but the material is so interesting that as long as you stay awake it's worth it. Writes her own textbook that is free to access. Reading the textbook chapters before lecture is the easiest way to perform well in class, as she has a tendency to go through material quickly. Biweekly open-book quizzes were easy.
I love her lectures overall and very informative. Even though about 85% of testable material comes from textbook and 15% from lecture, the lecture content literally explains the textbook material, so it is really lecture heavy I think,, attendance would highly be recommended! She is kind of monotone but still make study content very interesting!!
Lectures have a lot of content condensely packed together. Practice tests were given in preparation for exams but they were NOT representative of what to expect on the actual exams. Only graded on quizzes, midterm and final. Lacks communication with students so students do not know what to expect for exams.
Dr. Kion taught the second half of the course (virology), and the pace of her lectures was much more manageable than the immunology section. She is really good at providing examples and metaphors to help explain confusing topics. Final exam was reasonable too, and all multiple choice!
Dr. Kion's lectures are helpful, with clear examples to explain tough topics. The virology part was really engaging. unstuckstudy AI and the textbook were great study aids alongside attending class.
Lecture slides are filled with information, but can be hard to distinguish which pieces of information is testable/important (overwhelming amount of info). Lecture pacing is perfectly planned, but projecting voice can be monotonous. Exam and quizzes are fair.
Exam was on the verge of very hard from fair, very textbook heavy so get ready to spend a lot of time trying to understand. Lectures are not recorded, explains concepts as if she's talking to 5-year olds. 2 Midterm each worth 45% though is really scary. Content can be confusing and Tracy was ok... Definitely prepare to self learn though...
If you study completely from the textbook that she wrote, you will do fine in this class. I think she does a good job of communicating what we need to know, and assessments/quizzes are very fair.
I liked this class a lot. Her lectures were interesting; she's enthusiastic about the topic and openly engages in discussions regarding the lecture material. I didn't find her class boring at all, I don't understand the poor ratings. The tests were pretty straight forward. If you studied the notes, you'd do well in my opinion.
Not sure how she's still teaching AND course coordinator. HORRIBLY written readings, contradict themselves and haven't been updated since before the course code changed. Slides have repetitive information, she doesn't follow them in class which is a shame because she explains things well. Ideal if you attend every lecture and can retain everything.
Such a sweetheart, I was always cracking up during lectures, but the lectures themselves weren't very helpful. 85% of exam content is based off readings so I really just attended lecture to hear her jokes. The course itself is pretty outdated, but it's very self teachable
