GREAT teacher, Very helpful, very passionate about chemistry, a DOLL, and she's into the fine arts too. :) She explains things very well, but you have to make sure you *get* it, or ask for help if you need it.

Very nice teacher. I'd recommend. I managed to pull an A, but you have to put an effort to get an A

man she expected us to kno everything about chem... one student asked her if octane was in the gasoline we use everyday n she outright called him stupid... besides that she was pretty organized and her tests were doabl if you read the book and understand all of the problems assigned. dont expect her to help you much outside of the class.
sometimes she acted like we asked really stupid questions.
Don't go to her office hours. If you don't understand something, she takes it as a personal attack, then blames you for not understanding or calls you stupid. Has been known to leave students in tears.
She was a really good teacher and explained things really well, and the tests were easy to do well on as long as you understand the material.
I don't know what other people mean. She was VERY helpful in office hours. When I did not understand something I would come and see her and she would work with me for as long as it took until I grasped it. Great prof....really turned me on to chem.
I agree. Dr. Morkin is really nice and extrememly helpful. Chemistry is hard and I went to her office hours ALOT. She was always willing to help and explained things really well. She is an excellent lecturer and always makes class fun with experiments, jokes, etc. She's really sweet.
Great!
Dr Morkin is really nice. She gives very challenging tests. She ca be helpful with answering questions, but she often rushes through the material so a lot of the concepts arent very clear. I would suggest trying to get another professor.
She's by far my fav prof this year, she's really nice, helpful, she does cool demos and lectures are interesting and she's funny. Her tests are a bit difficult but if you put the work in you can get an A.
AMAZING TEACHER! She is very clear in class and teaches the material very well. Her tests are not the easiest but the fact that she is such a good teacher makes up for it. She is very helpful during office hours and is a very nice person overall. She is the reason I am a chem major and if you want to learn chemistry, take Dr. Morkin.
Dr. Morkin was extremely accessible during the semester. She is passionate about teaching and great at appealing to most learning styles. Her tests are challenging, but managable.
While Dr. Morkin is certainly enthusiastic about chem I did not find her very concerned with students' understanding of the concepts. I.E. if you got it, that was great and she was right there with you, if not then too bad, shes moving on and tells you to read the text book. Office hours didnt help. She acted like it was a crime that i didnt get it
Dr. Morkin was not a good teacher. She goes extremely fast and her tests do NOT reflect the homework problems in the text. She squeezes material in for the test without really explaining it. However, she is accessible, just don't get behind.
Dr. Morkin is a really good teacher but her tests are impossible.
Really wants students to do well and is extremely accessible. Go to her office hours and just get to know her!
I thought Dr. Morkin was very accessible and concerned about her students. Her tests were so much easier than those of the other professors in organic chemistry. She was always encouraging us to come to her office hours. Very nice lady.
Dr. Morkin is a phenomenal professor. Her class isn?t a breeze, but it is organic chemistry. I would highly recommend taking her because she loves what she teaches, and that makes the whole experience better. If you listen, pay attention and work the problems, you should be able to do well in her course.
good teacher but ridiculously hard hw, ridiculous hw on aris, this class is so over and beyond hard i can barley put into words
Dr. Morkin was a great professor for orgo. While she was more challenging than the other professors, she really made her students her number one priority. I think she sometimes unknowingly can intimidate students, but that's the case with any science professor. Just put in the time for the class and you'll do fine.
truly the most awful professor i have ever had in my entire time in school. shes not a helpful person in class and if she thinks you do not have even a little bit of the prior knowledge required for the class, she will say too bad, i cant help you, go back and learn it yourself. she is incredibly condescending at times and not helpful.
can be very demeaning and not always the nicest person. pretty good lecturer, but given the difficulty of her exams, she should be a better teacher. one of the worst experiences i've had at emory and she is by far my least favorite professor at emory
Tests are straight forward, and she engages the class, so can have a chance to speak. Aris was reasonable. No bonus on test, is the bad part. is indeed intimidating but not to be confused with her enthusiasm. funny commericial breaks; good professor.
SHE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR. Her tests are pretty straightforward and are easy if you have done all the homework problems she suggests you to do. She is enthusiastic and explains in the most engaging way. She is very helpful in office hours. I recommend you take her classes!
Brilliant professor. Engaging and makes you think. Tests require higher level thought. A great class, a good kind of challenging. She is funny, demonstrative of a caring attitude, and open to do whatever it takes to help you succeed. I love her and hope to take another class with her. Don't let your grade reflect the knowledge you get out of class.
She was not very helpful and her lectures helped a little but overall she was no that great of a professor. If you go to class expecting to learn chemistry, dont take her
very hard to schedule appointments with. good at lectures, but the tests are extremely hard and require much more thought than what is covered in lectures. worst experience at emory so far.
Lectures make sense, but tests are extremely difficult. Doing her assigned problems and tutoring still does not help with tests very much. Relatively good professor, but not good for your GPA.
Good lecturer, really passionate about what she teaches. Explains things really clear and answers every question raised by students during lecture. Tests are fair and doable. Some people say her test are super hard but I think as long as u r really careful u will be fine. She expects you to work really hard.
An awesome lecturer who you will love until test day. Tests are not reflective of how much you actually know, as evidenced by the fact that she had to curve a test and the final. take macbeth
Probably the best gen chem lecturer and prof @ Emory. Office hrs are helpful if there aren't droves of people there too. Tests are tough and often loaded with tricks. Gotta be careful. She will seem nice and thoughtful up till test day, so make sure you work hard. Go to chem mentors, do the hw she assigns, and take the practice test.
Dr. McGill is a really great teacher. Yeah, her tests can be challenging...but you didn't get accepted to Emory to have everything handed to you. She's fair and is always willing to do her best to help you understand the material. Very passionate.
Dr. McGill (Morkin) is one of my favorite people at Emory. She truly loves what she does and makes lecture super interesting. her tests are challenging, but she offers so much help. I am not doing well in the class and still love her and her teaching style! work hard, take her advice.
AMAZING TEACHER. yes. Chemistry is hard, but it is not impossible. I went to office hours every week, did the back of chapter problems way before each test, and was able to make an A- in the class. She is very helpful, teaching style is amazing. takeeee herr!!!
i had her for both fall and spring semester and loved both her and her class. she is very helpful and gives you all the tools to succeed, as long as you do the back of chapter problems, attend office hours, and chem mentor sessions you should do well. I earned an A- for both semesters
Her lectures were interesting, only when she did demonstrations. She expected every one to have a solid chemistry background, which I did not have. She is kind of rude, when I went to talk to her in person. If you don't understand, teach yourself before you talk to her. Her test were challenging.
My favorite professor at Emory. More conceptual than other gen chem professors and strong foundation for orgo or other premed classes! Must work hard though and do all back problems, exams, and mentor sheets.
Must have a large amount of time and flexibility to be successful in this class; very difficult without a strong background in chemistry
Great lecturer! Clear and really wants to make sure that you understand. She also makes you actively follow along through clicker questions rather than just copying down notes without absorbing any of the material. Tests are only difficult because the material is difficult. They are fair! I understand so much more in her class than I did in Weaver.
Professor McGill is a really down to earth person if you make the effort to go and talk to her. She wants her students to succeed and makes an effort to do so through her assignments and flexible office hours. Tests are a bit challenging but FAR from difficult if you made the effort to do the problems offered. Highly recommended!
Took McGill over the summer for orgo and highly recommend her! She is extremely clear during lecture and helpful during office hours. Her class was not easy by any means, but she provided many supplemental study materials and her tests were reasonable.
Would NOT recommend taking this class. If you dont have countless hours to put aside to study for the tests, this class is not for you. Tests dont reflect what you study in class, but rather how much you can relate what you learn in class to previous chem knowledge.
McGill isn't the worst gen chem professor you can take. Her teaching style is specific to a type of person, but if you're not that type of person, you'll struggle with her lectures. She will *NEVER* curve a test, whereas her colleagues will.
She might seem cool during class and in office hours, but her end of semester gradebook tells a totally different story. No matter how well you have done on the final, she will NOT round your grade up. She will literally leave you within 0.2 or 0.3 of the next letter grade. TOTALLY unexpected...
If you don't have a brain wired for mathscience + if you didn't take AP Chem in high school, BE WARNED - this class is NOT for you! McGill's tests are apparently easier than other profs (hers r more conceptual) but there is SO MUCH material that's difficult to grasp, so think a lot before taking this class. She's available often for office hours.
She's fantastic if you're a conceptual learner, an engaging lecturer, and her tests are extremely reasonable. I went to chem mentors every week and studied a moderate amount for her tests and got an A without too much stress. She's also always happy to help and not awkward at her office hours.
Never enough time to complete the exams she gives. She never curves either. Even if everyone fails. It is not fair especially when other chem professors at Emory curve and she does not. Acts like she wants to help students succeed but by not curving , listening to students, she is only hurting all students in her class.
Dr. McGill makes chem 141142 interesting and relevant. She is incredibly enthusiastic, always there to help, and is constantly engaging her students. Her tests aren't easy but they are mostly consistent with the lectures and material so there is nothing surprising. Her class is challenging but if you put in the energy, you will do well! She rocks.
Terrible. Not only is the class a struggle, she's just rude.
Dr. McGill is VERY engaging in class and really wants you to succeed. She gives many demonstrations, hands out worksheets, and it very willing to help. I love her class and her enthusiasm for chemistry. She is very conceptual based and her tests reflect that. You will do well if you practice and try to FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON.
Really not my favorite. She's nice enough, but encouraged me to change my entire career path simply because I struggled with the first exam. Be sure to read the textbook.
I'm sure we have all taken a ridiculously hard class before, but this class is on a whole new level of hard. They're only 3 tests that are EXTREMELY tricky and challenging. Simply stated: Do NOT do bad on her exams, they will destroy your grade. You may hate Aleks but it's very helpful in doing well in the class versus completing practice problems
Interesting professor, taught well but tests are concept not fact based.
Dr. McGill is an amazing chemistry professor. To be honest, if you are math-based you may have a more difficult time; however, if you are good with conceptual thinking or really want to learn the concepts, I would highly recommend taking her. She is very helpful and will take the time to make sure that you understand the unit. She's awesome!!
She's one of my favorites! I retook orgo with her since I didnt do so well the first time. She actually taught it in such a way that made me understand the material. She does grade tough but her tests cover exactly what she teaches and are really fair! She made me continue my chemistry major and didnt let me give up
Amazing professor! Very conceptual but helps you understand all of the material and do better on tests. Her office hours are extremely helpful. Probably the only professor that made the flipped classroom actually work
I see her average rating is 3.8, but I disagree! Her class is hard, but she is passionate, kind, and very good at explaining tough concepts. It's up to you to keep up with studying outside of class so it doesn't pile up before the exam, but she wants you to succeed and if you put in the effort you will get at least a B. Never bored, LOVE HER!
The reason I came to Emory is actually largely because I sat in on a class taught by Dr. McGill. Her lectures are interesting and she does a good job of keeping people engaged. She is always available during her posted office hours and grades are returned within 5 school days of taking the test (at the most). As it is chemistry, expect a challenge.
I love DrMcgill, lectures were straight forward and involved. Although it is not easy to understand everything during the class period, so go to office hours!! Office hours are the times when everything started to connect and make sense. Make sure to understand in dept the explanations she gives because that is what really matters on tests.
Dr. McGill is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate instructors I've ever had! On top of that, she is also very caring and willing to help you understand the concepts better. Chem is a difficult subject to learn, however, so I recommend attending office hours regularly as well as studying outside of class to keep up with the material.
I took McGill because I heard that she makes you understand concepts instead of just memorizing equations or facts, and I wanted to challenge myself. It's true; you have to really work to get a deep understanding of chemistry but she is a good teacher so it is not that hard. If you took AP Chemistry and did well, the class will be a breeze.
Dr. McGill is very nice but her class can be very challenging. She offers extra credit for groups if the group average is above an 80. The class consists mostly of group work on worksheets rather than actual lecture. It was sometimes unclear what chapters we should be reading. Generally we ran out of time before we could go over worksheets.
She was an amazing professor who really took time to listen to her students. The class will require reading and includes a lot of organic chemistry as this semester she taught the pilot curriculum which is becoming the new Chemistry 150. It is a lot more focused on fewer topics and will help to prepare students for Organic Chemistry for sure!
I had Dr. McGill for Chemistry 141 and 142 and her courses this year were the pilot courses for the new Chemistry 150 and 2nd semester course. She did an amazing job of creating the new curriculum and taught it amazingly. She cares so much about her students and was so helpful during office hours. Take her if you want a good grade!
Dr. McGill is a great professor - I really liked how she taught. However, the orgo material is extremely challenging so beware - the incorporation of orgo really made me work for my grade (btw, she is very unwilling to curve your final grade...) make sure to work hard in the beginning to get grades that can help you when the material gets hard....
Dr. McGill is very sweet and willing to help if needed. Her office hours are very helpful. The content is difficult but reading and chem mentors really helps. For fall 2017, McGill and Williams will be the only ones with experience teaching the new course, Chem 150, so take them!
She's amazing. Really helps you understand the concepts of general chemistry with a little bit of organic mixed in. She made me a chemistry major! Go to chem mentors and do the class worksheets and it's not hard to get an A.
Exhibits a genuine love for Chemistry and cares so much for her students! And she's Canadian so you'll learn a lot about that if you take her class. It's a definite PLUS!
She's really nice and gives good lectures, but she gives really hard tests that will kill your GPA.
She is a really good lecturer, but she goes so fast; it's hard to grasp the concepts if you have no time to process, so I wish she recorded her lectures or something. Her tests are pretty hard, so if you want to a good GPA go take another professor. Other professors are relatively easier.
So I'm not actually a pre-med kid (or even in STEM at Emory) but I do spend a lot of time in the (organic chemistry) side of things and from what I've seen she's a nice person, but her tests are insane. Not worth it, she'll ruin your GPA freshman year. Take literally any other gen chem prof, you won't regret it.
Do not take this class unless you can teach yourself!!! She does not curve, and is unapproachable. Do not believe the stuff other people say. This class ruins your GPA and she has it out for pre med students. I went to Epass, never missed class, & studied 15 hrs a week. If you took AP chem and are smart take this class if not avoid it at all cost.
Chem is difficult but doable. Use all resources: office hours, EPASS, Chem Mentors. Great lecturer. Kind person. Helpful at answering questions. Enthusiastic.
Chem is hard to begin with, but McGill teaches it well. She doesn't have the traditional powerpoint with bulletpoints, so you're really going to have to do her worksheets and pay attention. Do all resources given(chem mentors, office hours etc) I had friends in Heaven who had basically the same test as us, but they never really learned the material
Uses the reverse classroom; dependent on peer teaching and very little lecture.
One of my favorite professors at Emory. Really awesome lectures that I actually enjoyed going to and fair albeit difficult tests.
Excellent lecturer, gets you engaged and makes sure you leave class having learned something. Attendance is mandatory but you don't have to participate. Unfortunately, she has ridiculously difficult exams and a luck-based bonus system, which drags down your GPA. Other professors for the same course will have easier exams.
Mcgill is going to be a hit or miss for all of her students. Her style was very much pose a question and watch students struggle even if they were going in the wrong direction before explaining the right answer. AKA very roundabout in her teaching. If you take her I highly recommend getting notes from students who have already taken the class
McGill is a nice person, but her lectures won't help you at all for the tests. Brace yourself for a lot of self-learning and self-studying you will have to do. The tests will. wreck. you. But Aleks, Learning Catalytics, attendance, and participation will really boost your grade at the end of the semester so good luck.
best chem professor for 150 easily. tests are harder than the other professors but she's such a good lecturer that it offsets it. she also provides the opportunity for a 5 point bonus each test that helps a lot. you have to work but she makes it worth it.
Mcgill is the one who wrote the new curriculum so she knows her stuff and is a good professor. Keep in mind her TAs grade tests so make sure to turn in for regrade if you think you need it. She's def the hardest for 150 but prepares you for 202. a lot of mixed feelings bc she can be very short and not helpful or empathetic when you struggle.
McGill is decent. Her teaching style didn't work for me at all though. Imagine active learning and multiply that by 1000. You're almost teaching yourself the material which may work for some people. There aren't any slides and you basically have a discussion of the worksheet, and you have to learn the fundamental material outside of class.
McGill is decent. She's one of the best for 150 and has office hours nearly everyday. Her class is difficult and incorporates a lot of active learning, so you essentially have to teach yourself most of the material. If that doesn't work for you, you're out of luck as she's not very supportive for those who don't immediately grasp the material.
she's a solid choice for a chem teacher, but she's not super godly amazing like everyone makes her out to be. the test is a flipped classroom style though, so make sure you read before if you want fully get the most out of her class.
Dr. McGill is easily the most experienced and knowledgeable with the new curriculum, seeing as she wrote it. Ended up taking away a few bonus points, which was annoying, and she doesn't give a drop grade. That said, she was a fantastic lecturer and revolutionized the way I look at chemistry. It's a lot of work, but she loves her job and it shows.
I took McGill two semesters in a row and enjoyed having her as a teacher. She's a nice and approachable as a person and a teacher. The class is structured, but there aren't as many extra-credit opportunities as some other chem classes.
She's a great lecturer and def knows her stuff. Although the class is quite difficult, she has many office hours and is willing to help. She made me love chemistry despite my constant struggle with it. I would recommend even though there are other professors who have more extra credit/ easier exams.
Dr. McGill is a great choice for Chem150. She doesn't lecture much (flipped classroom) but she is engaged with students during class and helps them along with the worksheets. She has a bunch of office hours (usually around 4 per week) which are very helpful. Do the work she asks and go to office hours and you'll be set.
Love her lectures and grading policies. Don't ask for more when she gives you so many chances to boost your grade up! Do read the textbook and prepare to self learn some material. she's very organized and her lecture is just so clear!
Dr. McGill is one of the most passionate professors ever. She knows how to teach chemistry concepts very well. For CHEM 150, you need to make sure you put in outside effort to reinforce your understanding of the material. As long as you take her advice, do outside preparation, and study effectively, you should get a respectable grade in the class.
Dr. McGill is a wonderful professor! I loved taking her class because she really makes an effort to be there for the students and make sure you learn the material. She doesn't spend a lot of time lecturing, and she's not the easiest, but you do get a lot out if it. Taking AP Chem is definitely helpful, but you can still be successful without it.
I don't really like the way she lectures but her office hours were really helpful for giving practice questions and she basically focuses on what is on the test there. While there isn't really much homework, READ the textbook and use all the resources she gives(she gives links to good khan academy vids). I had her for CHEM150 and now in 202.
Dr. McGill is genuinely so passionate about chemistry and teaching, and she explained concepts clearly. She's also very accessible and available for office hours, which were super helpful! As long as you keep up with your work and go to office hours, the class is very manageable
Outstanding professor in 150 and 202. Classes are engaging, and she is incredibly enthusiastic. Class discussions are interesting and McGill always supports her students. Office hours almost everyday, and they are super helpful. Tests are fair, require some thinking but totally reasonable. Made me love chem, declaring a major because of her!
Her classes are treasures. She cares about you a lot and always tries to engage you. Her classes are inspirational and she knows how to teach. Her exams are harder than other classes, but in general, chemistry isn't as scary as it sounds like. I can only speak for our class, but if you are genuinely interested in Chemistry, TAKE HER!!!
I like McGill, but her exams are notoriously tough, and only get harder as the units go by. You have to really really know your stuff to do well, which means attending all lectures, Learning Assistants, readings, and office hours. Office hours are extremely helpful. You'll learn a lot from her class, which should help you in upper level chem.
I saw lots of folks saying you have to learning everything by yourself and Dr. McGill doesn't teach. That is absolutely not true in my case. She always centers her lectures around learning objectives, and just like many of other comments, you gotta go to office hours. Absolutely great lecture, highly recommend!
Her exams are a bit harder than other professors but it's complemented by engaging lectures. She is so kind and wants you to succeed. For the tests, focus on answering the learning objectives, skimming the assigned readings/videos, and completing old exams. Go to office hours as well, she focuses on similar material/concepts to the tests
I took McGill for 150 and 202, with my semester of 202 ending online. In 150, she had great lectures and also provided lots of additional resources. The beginning of 202 was the same but it was nowhere near the same caliber of teaching when we went online. I would recommend her without hesitation for in person classes, but not for online learning.
I really enjoyed taking Dr. McGill's classes this past year. I was nervous as a freshman taking chemistry because I hadn't taken a chemistry class in a while, but being in her class made me feel confident that I could learn and understand all the material. Don't be shy - raise your hand, go to office hours/LA. It will only help you in the long run!
McGill is supposed to be the reason many students take up a Chem major/minor. Her online classes but be entirely different from her in-person lectures. Recently, her staff feel behind on grading and are currently harshly grading all the group questions and quizzes because we notified them our assignments weren't graded despite her saying they were.
Unless you have already taken AP Chem, don't take McGill Chem150 online. Her lecturers are rather pointless to learning anything because you spend all of your time in breakout rooms. I wouldn't recommend taking her class unless you know it's gonna be in-person because I heard she is fantastic. This semester for all the Chem students is ridiculous.
Everyone says this professor is very good in-person but her online classes must be very different. During lectures she expects you to have already read the textbook in advance and learned the material and doesn't do a very good job explaining things. She and all of her TAs are accessible outside of class.
Dr. McGill is hilarious and a great lecturer. Yes, she expect everyone to learn a lot on their own, but that's to be expected with online learning. However, if you really want to learn directly, she also goes over everything we did in class more in-depthly during office hours. I loved her class, and I think she's the best prof for gen chem ever!!!
Dr. McGill is a fantastic professor and a must for CHEM150. She's going to make you work for it, but her lectures are clear and very well done. Very little HW, but doing the optional readings, worksheets, and LA sessions are a de facto requirement for doing well. She's very kind and helpful in office hours and always tires to help her students.
Take Dr. McGill! She WILL get you ready for the rigors organic chemistry.
she taught in-person sections this semester (as opposed to online last sem for 150) and she's definitely a lot better, fantastic lectures in person - so i would take her online course reviews with a grain of salt. lectures are great to understand concepts, and she's enthusiastic about the material and about teaching. very accessible as well.
I would recommend Dr. McGill! She is highly knowledgable, kind, understanding, and wants you to succeed. Go to class, GO TO LA SESSIONS, do the reading, and ask questions. Lectures are mostly going over and practicing the content so make sure to keep up. Chem can be hard but if you put in the work and effort there is no reason you shouldn't pass.
Wonderful prof!! Miss her so much, great experience in 150, gave great lectures focussing on commonly misunderstood topics with a slightly inverted classroom style.
Take her!! Dr. McGill is the best professor I've had at Emory by a long shot. She's so enthusiastic in class and takes the time to make sure everyone understands the content. She's incredibly kind and does a great job explaining even the most difficult concepts in chemistry. Make sure to go to office hours, participate in class, and ask questions!
Dr. McGill has unmatched excitement for chemistry, and it shows in her pedagogy. Her lectures are thoughtful and engaging(she helped write Emory's new chem curriculum). Her office hours are a must-attend event! There, she can break down confusing topics more deeply than during lectures. If you're stuck, go to her! She cares for her students so much
Dr. McGill was so wonderful and inspired me to become a chem major. She cares about her students an incredible amount and really wants them to succeed. If you are taking chemistry at Emory and McGill is an option, I would very highly recommend taking her class!!
Very engaging and passionate professor! Def take Dr. McGill she is the definition of an excellent teacher and will give you a deep and lasting understanding of chemistry.
A solid choice for introductory chemistry, and Professor McGill teaches pretty well for having so many students each class. There's some disconnect between what Professor McGill teaches and the material covered by the ALEKS online teaching system, but nothing too much to worry about.
Do not take McGill unless you are a VERY visual learner and can handle a lot reading before class/pre-class prep. She's a very sweet professor and cares about her students and their success, but her teaching style is very hit or miss. If you've taken AP Chem and did well, she's a good match.
i recommend taking dr. mcgill if given the opportunity for chem! she is very engaging and her lectures are something you definitely should attend because the way she explains topics is so intriguing. her office hours are a must go to and make sure to do all worksheets and go to chem LA sessions:)
she's a good teacher, her canvas page is well organized. to do well in this class I recommend going to every lecture and attending LA sessions. the classes teach the theory and the LA sessions teach you to apply the theory. that advice goes for any 150 teachers you have tho...
Dr. McGill is a wonderful professor who will make you feel seen and known in a class of over 100. She is very easy to get in contact with and always waits after class for student questions. She is kind and helps you through even when you are really struggling. This class moves very fast and is extremely challenging if you are coming in with no APs.
Really cares about her students, and makes chemistry fun and applicable to everyday life.
Dr.McGill is an incredible professor !! I absolutely loved her class. She is clear during lectures and is very clear about expectations and what will be on tests. She is such a kind person and genuinely wants to see everyone succeed. Coming into her class, I hated chemistry but she made me consider being a chem minor.
Great professor! Carrying the Chem Dept on her back, and only wish more professors were as thoughtful, passionate, and understanding as McGill. A true gem in the Chem Dept.
Lots of people like her, but pretty mid imo. Lectures were generally engaging, but often did not go in depth enough into some topics or specific exceptions, which often came up on tests. Class material is almost exclusively chem libretexts and videos, which makes it hard for people who are used to textbooks. Heavy typos on practice problems.
Dr. McGill is a great professor and wants you to succeed, but she will not hold your hand through this class. Be ready for a more flipped classroom style: go over the prereadings, do the worksheets, and go to LA sessions. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, even just to listen. Your grade will be a result of how much effort you put in, so don't be complacent.
This is a class where you should adopt a mindset that every mistake is part of a learning process. It's going to be overwhelming at first, but if you take advantage of your resources and be kind more to yourself, you can do well. As someone who barely passed the first exam to almost acing the following exams, I found this advice most helpful.
She cares about her students deeply. Go to her office hours, even just to listen. She doesn't cover material in depth too much unlike other teachers, but as long as you GO TO OFFICE HOURS, attend la sessions (or get them from a friend) and pay attention in class/good notes, you'll be ok! (I also did not take AP chem)
Dr. McGill is AMAZING! Best Chem 150 professor out there!! The class is hard, but if you go to class, do the practice problems, and attend office hours and la sessions, you'll be fine!
Dr. McGill is the best Chem 150 professor!! She explains things clearly and has lots of office hours. If you go to class, attend office hours, attend LA sessions and do practice exams/worksheets you will do great. Even if you don't get Dr. McGill in course registration, attend her office hours and watch her lectures, it is super helpful!!
Very difficult, especially 202, I never took honors or AP chemistry so it was rlly hard to grasp concepts. I felt that the class moved too fast and Dr.Mcgill did not do a very good job of teaching new material, it quickly became rlly overwhelming. If u have a job or other hard classes and can't attend LA sessions regularly its rlly hard to do well.
the worst. overhyped and relies on her reputation instead of teaching. great in thermodynamics. anything after module 1 is awful. spend the entire class shrieking at us about PKAs. doesnt teach to her own exam. went to office hours for help and she fed me some meta bs about "you need to struggle more". gaslights you into thinking shes good. avoid.
I took both 202 and 203 with her, she's actually pretty good at gen chem before she gets into orgo stuff after 202 midterm 2. Her classes are a mess of pKas, lectures focusing 75% on mechanisms, tests focusing 75% on molecular orbitals, and leaving crumbs of stability/reactivity for us to pick up. Don't take her for orgo, but she's nice in 202
I took her for 203. She is a nice professor, but should have just stayed with 202 and not 203. Gave myself and others a lot of unnecessary stress by posting answer keys to worksheets just a few days before the exam (sometimes the worksheet itself was also posted late). Lectures are very watered down, so you have to teach your self to do well.
Took for Chem 203.I believe it was her first time teaching the class in a long time. I think McGill is a great professor, and I think if she continues to teach this class, it will improve. But Lots of uncessary stress. No curve info posted, waited to last second to post answer keys, exams weren't always related to LOs.
Overall her lectures were great/informative but she stressed everyone out by telling us nothing about how exams would be curved. She is not easily accessible outside of class, always behind in teaching content/grading but compared to professors like Mcdonald, she's amazing (he doesn't teach relevant content in his class OR give out worksheets).
Dr. Mcgill does not teach for her exams. In class, we're taught the most basic mechanisms/examples, and are not adequately prepared for her exams. Every exam we were tested on pkas (could have sworn we were in orgo but ok) and it was so hard to meet with her 1-on-1. 203 was not "impossible" but I did not feel very supported/prepared for it by her.
Took for 202 and was amazing. I wish I had her for 150. Highly recommend!!!!!!
Dr. McGill is one of the most passionate teachers in the school. She is always willing to help students during class and office hours. She posts lecture videos and slides, which really helped me throughout the semester. Although the content is difficult, she made it more manageable. However, she can be a bit difficult to contact outside of class.
Great professor! Super kind, but very loud (beware 8:30AM students). Will drill concepts into your head and only further reinforces them in office hours. #1 word of advice for CHEM202: GO TO LA SESSIONS!
Taking McGill's class can be uniquely frustrating. She was COMPLETELY inactive in the class GroupMe until after everyone turned in their final. Some people don't find her office hours to be helpful and will go to other professor's. I don't blame them. In class sometimes, she wouldn't mention some learning objectives while every other professor did.
Dr. McGill has a strong passion for teaching chemistry, though she can be a bit overenthusiastic at times. Her lectures can occasionally be disorganized, causing some confusion about the main topics. But once you get used to her teaching style, you'll find she's a good professor. amazing lectures on chapters 3 and 4.
McGill is very charismatic in the way she constructs her lectures. She made the difficult chem concepts a little easier to follow, though this extra explanation meant we often didn't finish the lesson. Also, it was nice having breaks during class in which we did group questions at our table.
I was very lazy which is the reason for my grade, but McGill is super nice, she has a lot of energy but its good for the really boring subjects because she finds ways to make it interesting. Try not to fall behind, or you'll end up like me lol.
Taking this class was a nighmare. She lectures so fast and it is difficult to follow through. She does not have the same questions on test and exams. This years exams were so much harder and it was impossible to be good at it. Requires a lot of extra study and still bombs my gpa. DO NOR RECOMMEND. Also not very accessible on groupme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She really projects her voice when she lectures, beware for her early classes. Very passionate (sometimes too passionate) but her lectures for the most part are helpful. She'll sometimes just not go over a learning objective since she'll get sidetracked from the previous lecture and then our class ends up behind. Sometimes grazes over complex topics
Dr. McGill brings great enthusiasm to her CHEM202 lectures, though her teaching style can be a bit disorganized at times. Attending LA sessions and using resources like unstuck study for study prep really helps manage the course content.
Chem 150 is a challenging class, but I believe McGill is the best teacher. She slows down during class and answers a lot of questions throughout the period. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and LA SESSIONS! She is super helpful, kind, and wants her students to succeed. She teachers very visually through demonstrations and drawing. Class is collaborative also.
great teacher, and very engaging in lectures. make sure to attend office hours and LA session (especially if you can go to Zach's), to reinforce what you learned in class. if you have questions ask and she can help you. if you don't speak up, no one can help you. she's a great teacher honestly and I would take more of her classes :)
Professor Mcgill really knows her chemistry and is willing to help you learn it as long as you show that you care and want to learn the content too and not just get a grade. Be wary though the tests are sometimes very different from the in-class content simply because there is one test that gets shared by like 4 professors lol
Dr. McGill is incredibly passionate and intelligent and ensures that her students achieve a solid understanding of chemistry fundamentals, no matter their background. She heavily promotes class participation and is kind when people are wrong. Some of the concepts we've learned are difficult to grasp but Zach's LA sessions help a lot.
Class lecture is legit pointless. So much work for so little reward. Would not recommend taking McGill
Great teacher, the class is obviously a challenge but her teaching style makes coming to class enjoyable. Some people say she is too loud but I think it is what makes her so great, really shows she cares about the class and that the students understand her.
Would highly recommend.
Best chem prof at Emory!! Super receptive to feedback, genuinely cares about making sure you understand concepts. Go to office hours and participate! Puts so much time for extra practice. Grading is standard for all classes so exams weigh really heavy, but HW is easy if you pay attention. Group quizzes aren't bad and you can access past exams.
absolutely not. save yourself please.
MCGILL IS OVERRATED. THE CHEM DEPARTMENT DOESN'T HAVE GOOD TEACHER MCGILL IS JUST AN AVERAGE TEACHER BUT HIGHLY OVERRATED.
GOAT for 202. Exams are hard but gives SO MANY practice tests and problems to prepare with. Also crazy engaging when speaking. Take her if you can
McGill is SUCH an engaging and kind professor. Her lectures encourage you to participate and talk with your pees. She's very willing to answer questions. Chem 202 is a very difficult course by default, but McGill drills the important parts into your brain. Be prepared to utilize the practice exams and other resources provided. Take her if you can!!
Awesome lecturerer and super engaging super passionate and caring for students. Test tricky but lots of practice exams
Dr. McGill is a very competent professor. She answers question, but also makes sure to get through all of the material. You can tell she is knowledgeable about Chemistry. Compared to the other 202 professors, I would definitely recommend.
I had McGill for both CHEM 150 and CHEM 202 and she is the best professor ever! So passionate about chemistry and passionate about helping her students learn. She herself has convinced me to potentially be a chemistry major!
Dr. McGill is an engaging lecturer who makes chemistry interesting with her remarks; however, she does not work out the worksheets like other professors, instead she goes over the seemingly more important questions. It may seem like a time saver to explain those questions more in depth, but it is not so because it assumes students' knowledge.
Dr McGill is the best and genuinely cares about all of her students sm and you can tell she LOVES chemistry. Genuinely the best chem prof in the dept by far and super available outside of class. I unfortunately just suck at chem + math and 202 was just a hard class for me overall so me kinda sucking at this class is not her fault that's on me lol
took her for both 150 and 202 and she is amazing. she breaks down concepts easily and will work through any questions u have in class. she made me love chem after hating it in high school. 3 midterms one final. final can replace the worst midterm grade. form study groups and ask questions in class/office hours.would take her again if I could
Dr. Mcgill has been my favorite professor at Emory. Although, shes NOT one of those professors that will tell you what will be on the exam. She prepares you well if you put in the work.. go to office hours, ask questions, pay attention in class, DO THE READINGS ESPECIALLY FOR 150, and do all the Practice problems. Take her for 150 and 202!
Dr. McGill is one of my favorite professors I've had. She's passionate about teaching and genuinely cares about her students. If you put in effort, there are many opportunities to strengthen your understanding. If you're struggling, go to office hours, LA sessions, or talk to her—she truly wants to help.
Dr. McGill is awesome, and her enthusiasm for chemistry is very apparent. She teaches the content clearly, even for students who only took gen chem in high school. Study well for all the midterms and final, since they make up 80% of your grade!
Good in class practice opportunities and lots of support/resources. Tests can be challenging and require you to put in effort but her teaching and outside of class opportunities help a lot.
Dr. McGill is a great lecturer, and the course is really interesting. Although the first two midterms are cram-able, make sure that you regularly study/practice for the third midterm because there's a good amount of material to learn outside of class.
