While Tracy is awesome and made a 8am stats class really interesting and fun I think she did a poor job choosing her T.A.'s. They were absolutely horrible. It ruined the class for me.
Totally agree with the last comment. The TA's are incredibly rude, inconsistent (but usually harsh) graders, and really don't seem to like any of the students. Dr. Tomlinson seems pretty nice, definitely knowledgeable and I think she handles the class well considering what a universally disliked subject she teaches (statistics).
She tends to assign a decent amount of homework, but for a stats class that really is the only way you're actually going to learn the material. Goes out of her way to really explain concept, comes prepared with good slides and is approachable and accessible. Also goes out of her way to schedule additional tutoring sessions for Excel/class concepts
Tracy is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow, and explains the material in detail. Lab sections and homework are really important to learning the material. If you put in the work, you'll do well.
Not helpful for homework or final assignments. TAs don't help too much if you have questions regarding assignments. Too much homework. Don't recommend. Take Mohr.
The material is very easy if you have basic math knowledge. She understands everything very well and answers any question. The tests and homework are very fair, and there's only one paper which is only a few pages. Highly recommend.
Great at explaining the topics, offers a lot of points for participation and some extra credit. If you ask questions she will definitely help you. Overall, great stat teacher
She doesn't listen to students' concerns, she gives too much homework. Whenever you tell her the given grade is wrong she doesn't do anything to resolve it.. It's frustrating !
Took course over winter term. Forced to watch hours of lecture videos that counted for 6% of your grade, but could be summed into a page of notes. So much time wasted, and made the material more difficult to follow since there was less time to actually work on problems. Assigned HW through aplia didn't sync with the course. More of a reading check.
Dr. Tomlinson does fine with lecture slides and it's not hard to learn the course material, but the lab videos!! They are pointless, yet a big chunk of your participation grade. + She can be a bit pretentious in that she's finicky about minor details in grading and her attitude can be off-putting. Not the worst though, and the TAs were all great.
Dr. Tomlinson is great. She is a awesome lecturer, really cares about her students ( will answer any question you have) she goes out of her way to explain the concept to you if you set up offfice hours. She is truly great. Her TAs are good for he most part all but one Taylor she is extremely rude and pretentious. Overall good class if you work.
I really liked Dr. Tomlinson. She made an 8AM class interesting and actually bearable. She obviously is passionate about statistics and tried to make her lectures interesting. Definitely go to class bc you hand in a problem set every class which is how she takes attendance/participation. Don't leave the online problems til last minute either!
Dr. Tomlinson is God's gift to statistics. I would not have done well at all in stats if it weren't for her. She was so clear and interesting-I literally never wanted her class to end. Very clear and fair instructor :)
Dr. T was wonderful! Always open to questions and concerns, does her best to make sure you understand the material. Lectures are great, they aren't boring and don't drag on, they more pull you into listen. Would highly recommend she's wonderful.
Open note tests. Explains things very well and lots of opportunities to learn. Fairly easy class if you're willing to put in some amount of effort. In class participation points so you need to show up.
Easy A if you complete homeworks. Participation is worth a lot between class and watching online videos, but you can miss and still do very well. Dr. Tomlinson is a good lecturer and gives a lot of practice problems and resources to ensure that you understand the material. Complete her study guides and bring them to exams, which are all open note.
Lots of homework/videos, but if you pay attention in class and actually go you learn a lot. This was my first ever statistics class and I barely struggled. She is an interesting lecturer and clearly is knowledgeable and passionate about statistics. Tests are open note and easy, just do homework and attend lecture (participation points!!)
Took Tracey for PSYC300 and I have to say it's one of the most difficult courses I've taken. Her lectures are extremely boring and makes her TA's grade the assignments/exams, no grading was one by her all semester. We did more in lab than lectures. The grading varies by TA's and is inconsistent. Was the only professor teaching this class
This class can be tedious with online mastery training and weekly APA reports, but not difficult. Attendance in lecture and lab is mandatory and counts towards your grade. Easy A if you come to class and put effort into assignments. Dr. Tomlinson is a great professor who clearly cares and is pretty understanding.
Lacks relationships with students. Doesn't understand a student's needs or concerns. Lacks ability to converse with students and form relationships, but asks for a significant amount of work for such a basic level class
Horrible professor, adjust your schedule to avoid taking any of her classes. She assigns so much homework, but it's all busy work that wastes your time instead of actually helping you learn the material. Not very understanding of students' situations. Her attitude is very condescending. Some TAs are nice and helpful, but others are just like Tracy.
Dr. Tomlinson does not give concrete examples and is very hard to follow, because she moves through the slides too fast you give up on even trying to take notes. The test are very hard because of the time limit, to prepare you have to teach yourself, bc the TA's are no help either. A lot of unnecessary/confusing homework. Also, bad communication.
Dr. Tomlinson is nice and the lectures were fine, but the amount of busy work we were assigned was insane. I was not a fan of the papers either. Exams are open note, but kind of long. If you have an interest in research, this class is for you. If not, take a different stats class.
good teacher but moves slowly, esp if youve taken stat before. she's engaging and has helpful slides. exams are open note so you can literally bring a practice exam to the test - SO EASY. however, the hw is INSANE. theres too many components and while the cengage hw is helpful, with the mastery training/videos/practice elms questions it take hours
Extremely knowledgeable, always answers questions effectively, readily available for help and resources. As a non-math person, Dr Tomlinson made statistics make sense to me
Tomlinson is actually a really good professor. The class was definitely tedious with online mastery training and APA reports as others have said, but its easy to keep up once you get a routine going. DO NOT skip class because participation counts for a whole lot of your grade. She also gives extra credit and exams are open note. Easy A
Skip class and youll get zero participation points, which is heavy on your grade. Build up papers due practically every week. TAs are super helpful. She makes the class easier than it could have been.
She is a good lecturer! Although the subject was not what I was interested in, she is obviously very passionate which made it less boring. Exams are open note, so make sure you take really good notes. There is a lot of homework, but it really helped me with the course.
honestly so surprised people actually gave her good reviews. her attitude sucked and it was an 8 am class that I had to commute to, which btw she had no wiggle room for the off chance you were late. along with the super long lecture videos that were mandatory, it felt like she just dragged a lot of things on that couldve been made simpler.
This class is a lot of work but Tracy clearly cares about the subject and students. Two attempts to do each HW which saved my life, and there's 1.5% extra credit available. Synchronous lab with the TAs is the most helpful part of the class because lectures aren't always clear or directly applicable to HW. You'll learn but you'll work for it.
I enjoyed Dr. Tomlinsons class! Shes open to any questions or concerns you have and is easily approachable. I enjoyed the lectures, it was never boring. Although I wish some of the readings werent too long. Otherwise, it was a great class and I had a good experience.
Loved this class. Very interesting, relevant, real-life topics. Tomlinson is a great professor & responsive to students. Lots of readings, quizzes, videos, discussion boards, & 2 midterms but they're all easy if you stay on top of things. Must attend class & read, participation counts for a lot & class is half lecture half discussion.
I had this prof 2 semesters in a row for 200 and 300 and both were a horrendous experience. She's completely inflexible, and gave use 12+ hours of work a week. Both semesters I emailed her to address the obscene workload and it took her over a week to respond, and she essentially told me to deal with it. Exams are also completely out of left field.
Do NOT take this class. The amount of work is obscene. Shes also so inflexible. Ive never had a class in my life that took up this much of my time. Between, hw, lectures, quizzes, and a bunch of petty little assignments, I barely had time for my other summer class. I dont know if its better in the fall/spring but its not worth finding out.
When I was taking Psyc200 with Dr. Tomlinson, I was hating her for giving us a lot of work but after finishing the class and entering to Psyc 300 where the professor has a luck of a knowledge of the subject, I appreciate Dr. Tomlinson. Yes, the class was difficult but you learn and that knowledge would definitely help you in your future classes.
Worst professor ive had at the university
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR A SUMMER/WINTER TERM. She does not adjust the syllabus for a shortened semester, so you will get a class that already has an extremely heavy workload that has been condensed to 4-6 weeks. Had to conduct a study, run code analyses, write a research paper, do two lab reports (within class time), & addition hw EVERY WEEK.
I wouldn't go as far to see she's a terrible professor, it's just the lectures are very fast and the workload is heavy. The clickers, multiple homework attempts and the TA saved my life. DO THEM! Tomlinson is extremely sweet and caring though so don't be scared to ask for help. I do think this class should be 4 creds rather than 3 bc of workload
Dr. Tomlinson is such a caring professor and genuinely cares about her students' success and future. The course is lecture-heavy and not an easy A, but you get multiple homework attempts, review sessions for quizzes, and the TAs are great resources. While the topic is intimidating, Dr. Tomlinson wants you to do well so don't be scared to reach out.
DO NOT TAKE!! The amount of work she gave was insane and a bunch of it was pointless assignments. The R assignments took so much time and were only worth 1 credit. She does about 10 dumb clickers in class which are so easy to miss. Come to class on time because the first thing she does is clicker. No exams but HW and quizzes were lengthy
Tracy's class is ridiculously hard & she doesn't care about how we're doing in it. The averages on the assignments are low C's b/c her lectures are so loosely aligned with them, leaving us to try to teach ourselves. She makes the class SO painful to the point that many of us are pushing off psyc300 so they don't have to take it with her.
Personally, I did not enjoy professor Tomlinson's style of teaching. She would have clickers at the beginning of the lecture which are easy to miss and then mark you absent. She sped through lectures and if English isn't your first language, it is about 20 times harder to learn the material. Most grading was done by TAs and no feedbacks were given.
This class is definitely not easy, be prepared for notes and in lecture participation. Professor Tomlinson genuinely cares about her students. I am not a math person AT ALL but between her teaching, the TA's, and the lab videos, it was easy to catch up The homeworks are all open note with two attempts and the quizzes are based on the homework.
DO NOT TAKE FOR WINTER COURSES. Does not adjust the syllabus. Spend about 8 hours on this class each day. Daily homework takes about 2 hours and seems like there are hundreds of videos. Very difficult to contact. Should've taken in in spring semester with different prof. Would've been less stressful. Typically like statistics. She made me hate it.
She assigns way too much work over the winter break course and didnt seem to care about her students
This professor is terrible, I would not recommend. Her class was so bad and hard I needed to withdraw from her class. Please enroll with another professor if you love youeself. This is an psyc class and her class was harder than a calculus class.
If you want to fail your core class for PSYCH during the winter, this would be the perfect class to take. lectures don't prep you well for the nuance in the homework. The course load, even for a winter class, is obscene + a zero-tolerance policy for late work despite how slow feedback is.
I passed AP statistics in high school and failed AP calculus. I did better in math140 this year than I did in this statistics class. This professor is not accommodating, especially during winter semesters
Dr. Tomlinson is a really great teacher. I read this page before taking PSYC200 and was terrified to start, but I honestly did not mind the class. The lectures are very helpful, the slides and a recording of each lecture is posted, so if you miss class you still have everything you need. All assignments are online, open note and straight forward.
So much unnecessary work. If I could give her a 0, I would. This was one of the worst professors I've ever had. She acts as if we don't have a life outside of this class. I never write bad reviews but I had to. Worst professor in all 3 years I have been in this school.
The class itself wasn't horrible but Prof Tomlinson was not great. She assigns a TON of busy work that is unrelated to what you're learning and is a stickler about participation. She's also not accommodating when you genuinely need help. Make sure you stay on top of your work and you should be fine.
I tried to take this class with a full load. I dropped it after 3 weeks because it is treated like a graduate level class. Easily 10 hours of homework per week. If you have a job and other hard courses, find another semester to do it. She should not be the only Professor teaching this course. If I could give a zero, I would.
Definitely one of the worst professors I've had in a long time. There is an insane amount of homework you need to do for this class. She acts as if students don't have a life outside of class. I am barely surviving this class and I wish I could drop out. So unreasonable with the amount of work she gives.
Pros: she's passionate about the subject, willing to help (always responds to emails), very achievable to get an A, mostly participation, open note exams, extra credit for 1.5% overall grade - Cons: a ton of work, huge time commitment, 5-10 homework assignments each week, a lot of busy work, which can be tedious, lengthy papers every week
There is a lot of work in this class. Even compared to other 400-level classes I’ve taken, this is just ridiculous. Every week you spend about 10-14 hours on HW and Essays. That’s roughly 2+ hours on a daily basis of just doing her class work. If I could drop this class I would but I need it for credit :/
I don't know but psyc 300 is DEFINITELY easier than psyc 200. The labs are so so helpful so go to them. Also expect to write papers every week but the TA's are amazing and provide everything you need to do the papers. Tomlinson also cares. Go to class and I think you'll do fine. They literally give everything you need to pass!
I took Professor Tomlinson for PSYC200, and I can say that PSYC300 is slightly better; that is still not saying much. There are still a ton of papers and reading, discussion board, and R assignments, and three non-cumulative exams. Exams are in-person and open notes. Even my TA was fed up with the amount of work since she was the one grading it
Tracy Tomlinson is not the worst Professor, but she is not the greatest. She is nice and energetic, and her lectures are straightforward, but she does not give great examples for homework assignments. I found myself lost many times on some of the homework questions. There are bi-weekly quizzes and r assignments and homework and discussions weekly.
I really liked this professor and her enthusiasm for the subject. I had her for PSYC200 and PSYC300 and I think while the course material is difficult and a lot, she does her best to make it manageable. I think most people mistake her being a bad professor with the course being difficult. Personally, I think she's a really solid professor.
If this class is offered with LITERALLY any other professor please take it.While Dr. T is passionate about psychological research she is difficult to work with. The course workload is immense and overwhelming. Don't reach out if you have any personal issues that make it difficult to complete an assignment all you'll get is a counseling center link
I took this class online during the summer. The workload and lecture videos are fine if you're paying attention and space them out. They give a lot of assignments that are easy points. The TAs have office hours every day and are extremely helpful. This class might seem daunting at first, but if you put in the effort you will get a good grade.
I went into this class w/ so much anxiety, especially after PSYC200, but it ended up being not that bad. Prof. Tomlinson/ the TAs are very helpful, but the grading can be petty. I recommend taking this online if you can, the fast pace helps believe it or not. Get ready for lots of homework/important papers. GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!
I took psyc200 with 4 other courses that were all 400 level. This class had 10x the amount of work and was harder and more time consuming than any of my 400 level courses. It is obscene the amount of homework she assigns. Readings, homework, discussion boards, R assignments, quizzes, and labs all in one week. Absolutely ridiculous.
Pros: Clear schedule on the HW, no exams just weekly open note quizzes, recorded classes. Cons: Attendance is mandatory, slides aren't posted until after and she moves through them fast. Nice if you talk to her, but strict about what she will accept. I had multiple loved ones die, didn't tell her until HW was 1h late, she said it was too late.
one of the most understanding and engaging profs I've had. cares about students and the material, teaches it in a way that actually helps you learn it, not just some monotone lecture. & she gives out so many opportunities for points in her classes. just attend class, take good notes, do ur assignments, and email her when you need more time on them
She is amazing at teaching this class. The content may be tough, but she teaches it well & is flexible. Expect a bit of homework & weekly assignments, no exam. It might seem like a lot, but if you put in enough effort and use the supports available (there are A LOT!) it is easy to do well. She truly cares about her students, I would take her again.
She's a good professor and is enthusiastic about statistics but the amount of assignments for this class was just crazy. I was consistently doing more work for this class than any of my other classes and a lot of the homework was repetitive and unhelpful. I'm a good student but was very stressed because of this class. Participation is also graded.
Dr. Tomlinson is very passionate about statistics. She made lectures interesting and cared if the class seemed lost in any way. There is quite a bit of work to do in this class, but there's a weekly schedule that is set and followed. There's rarely an assignment you don't expect. Make sure to participate as it's a big part of your grade!
my god this class was an absolute nightmare. i have taken other math-heavy classes like calc and physics here and nothing came close to the amount of work this class had it was ridiculous. we had 250+ homework assignments across the semester so start them EARLY and show up to every lecture even if u sleep. your grade will suffer if you skip
Took as winter course: It is lecture and homework heavy, however, it can be doable. If you have prior knowledge of stats and did alright, you should do fine in this class. The best thing to do is to plan ahead and stay organized, you might not do well if you don't. Also all homework, exams, quizzes, etc were open-note, so that was EXTREMELY helpful
I read Dr.Tomlinson was bad here but after taking this class I highly disagree. I would love to take her again and I feel that I learned so much in this class, so much that I was applying it to my life. I'm so glad I took Dr. Tomlinson for 200 and I hope to take her for psyc300 too! There's lots of homework but its part of the learning process.
I took professor T for the winter and my grade doesn't reflect her ability to teach the topic, the class was just too fast of pace and a lot of work for me with my schedule. I was I bit hesitant taking professor T with the reviews, but I really enjoyed her lecture videos, zoom meetings w/ her & TA's and she was always responsive with my concerns.
There is lots of busy work but all of the assignments, including quizzes and exams are online. In general, as long as you get assignments done, you will pass.
The class was fine, but lectures felt so unnecessary as she would just go over the basics of the module that we're supposed to complete before class. Attendance is mandatory too, so it just felt like a waste of time. The work load is also just obscene for the type of class it is, lots of busy work. She is a good lecturer though, and is passionate.
Her class is tough, but she's a really fun, passionate teacher with an interesting topic. There's A LOT of homework, but a fair bit of it is just easy points. It is stressful to keep up with the amount of homework, especially because she has a zero tolerance late policy, though. The class is interesting, but it isn't easy.
She is easily one of my favorite professors at UMD. PSYC300 is a lot of work (as expected) but her organization of it + the TA support is wonderful. The class content was new and enjoyable, and doing research was fun and interesting. She manages to make the class very engaging and looks out for you personally and professionally. Such a cool person.
Her lectures are long and redundant, and you have tons of homework/assignments constantly. I took her for both 200/300, and both classes were the same- intense outside class work in no regards to the other 4 classes you are taking. And apparently, you have to make sure the TAs grade correctly, or you will be penalized.
Her lectures just repeat what's in the modules and they are mandatory. The TAs grade everything too slowly. When you have a report due almost every week that's not good because the only feedback you have to work with is peer reviews, making it impossible to actually use proper feedback. She is passionate about her field though.
The amount of homework in this class is ridiculous. Homework is due at the beginning of each week and it takes a minimum of two hours to complete as it has a minimum of 30 questions that are all computational. On top of the homework every other week you will be taking an R assignment and quiz. This class has more work than math and chem combined.
She really try to keep you busy. Please AVOID her.. Her TAs literally grade those work based on however they want to. She doesn't care about students at all. Workload is max. I get that there are other professors who has same amount of work, but she takes attendance every lecture. It's a hustle. Good luck everyone.
Class is very interesting, as it's primarily discussion-based and covers interesting content. But participation matters. You need to pay $40 for clickers. There are multiple readings and a quiz/discussion board due before every class, very tedious work. Took forever to grade assignments. If you're willing to work, then this is an engaging class.
Dr. Tomlinson is a great professor. She cares so much about her students and offers feedback opportunities each week about her teaching. She is always willing to change things to suit her students' learning better and wants everyone to love statistics. It's homework heavy but she provides you every resource to understand the content.
Great teacher, replies fast, super nice and everything. The way the class is structured is hellish though. Atleast one assignment a DAY, and more assignments than my 4 other classes combined. Participation is high percentage in a 300 person lecture with no discussions in class. Strange.
The class is not hard in the slightest. The way it's structured is so weird and unnecessary. 12 assignments a week and none take longer than 10 minutes. Mandatory attendance for a 300 person lecture with no substance and no group work. She tries her hardest to make the class unique and it just doesn't work. Not even a hard class just annoying.
Puts more emphasis on going to her class and completing random, trivial, constant, and useless online graded activities than anything significant to be tested on. Got
