Good Prof. Good notes.
Really takes his time. Goes into topics more in depth than you need to know but explains things really well. Course notes on the web are really helpful.
Between his notes and trying to pay attention to his incredibly boring class, the only thing worse is listening to his lame hockey jokes.
booooooooooooo
Good and interesting prof. Hockey jokes are OK if your not a Leafs fan.
Notes on web are ok, lectures are really boring, but he really knows his stuff.
He is always available to help, and he cares about his students. His notes are online, which is nice. Can be a bit boring and confusing in lectures, but he definitly knows his stuff. Overall a great prof!
Very helpful prof. Chem 1050 is a very challenging course, but he is very eager to help. It's hard to get this guy impatient with you.
Coooooooooooool. Very interesting class so far! Way better than the prof I had in 1050.
Didn't really get most of what he taught because of the manner in which it was presented. All powerpoit presenation just was very innefective and the several walkout because he could not control his class showed me he really didn't know how to handle teaching.
Good prof. Does lots of examples in class. Sometimes goes off topic a bit but that keeps me awake. Plays Pixar movies before class starts.
Seems like a really nice guy, but he only skims the surface of topics. He does a lot of examples but they are not usually as hard as the porblems on the test, which are tricky. Also, his notes (which are in power point form) are not that great. Overall I do not like this prof's teaching style and would not recommend him!!
Fridgen's powerpoint notes were unclear and his examples were too easy compared to the test. Although he was a nice guy and did care about how the class was doing he isn't that great of a prof.
You work for your grade, exam was easy.
The BEST prof I've had so far!! I didn't even do that well in the course, but that's just cause it's hard and I'm bad at chem. He's really helpful, actually cares about his students, and he was patient when people (myself included) asked stupid questions.
DIFFICULT! LOOK OUT FOR HIS TESTS. Fridgens tests are far more difficult than the other 1050 profs. You can expect to be tested on some things the other classes wont even touch. His powerpoint notes are ok. He makes you spend 50 dollars on a clicker that other profs wont ask you to buy.
Prof. Frigden is extremely helpful and understanding. He goes into detail that is probably not neccesary for the course. It is garbage that the clicker costs 50 dollars, but gives easy particpation marks..I had him in 1050 and made sure I had him for 1051. good prof!
This is my second course with him. He's very clear and organised and is obviousy passionate about chemistry. He can be a little cold if you go see him in his office. Clickers are expensive, but help a lot. Tests often have weird questions, but if you study enough, you can still get a good grade.
WHOOOOOHOOOOO! I rocked it. Good prof, loads of work but you can get a good mark.
Good class, good prof.
Excellent prof! He doesn't mind people coming by his office to ask questions. His tests are very fair if you review your notes. Really good with the class, he actually organized tickets to a Fog Devils when I did 1050 with him. Clickers are $50 but are worth every penny in my opinion. Would highly recommend him to anybody interested in Chemistry.
Very organized and interesting. Overall an awesome prof.
Maybe if he spent more time teaching instead of talking about his kids, people would actually do well in his classes. The clickers were garbage. His power points weren't even notes, just examples of stupid garbage that we didn't even need to know for the exam. Need less to say, I would never recommend him.
Honestly the clearest prof I have had. His examples are great and tests are fair. Lots of extra work in his class but it pais off.
Great class, very interesting, Fridgen is a great teacher.
Clickers are a bit of a problem for people who don't regularly attend class seeing as you lose participation marks , though all in all he's a fairly good prof. would recommend him if you're willing to do the work.
Some people are sour grapes about this teacher complaining about people doing bad in his course. As for them try comparing his class averages to the others and his is significantly higher ( like on a last test our class had 66 and other had a failing average). You must be willing to work. His explanations are quite good not just giving the answers,
Good Professor, If u work hard you can do very well in his class. Gives detailed notes and knows what he is talking about.
You have to go to class and you have to do assignments that other classes don't. Lots of work but doable and you come off great. I highly recommend Fridgen.
He knows what he's talking about. But he assumes you know what he's talking about. ie. We spent 2 classes on orbitals. He then proceeded to teach everything that in any way related back to orbitals assuming we then had PhD level experience with orbitals, making quick reference back to them essential in understanding the new stuff.
Bad prof, and not at all approchable. Gives online assignments that others classes don't have, and tests are extremely challenging (7 pages in 50 minutes). He also made our final exam very difficult which many people failed, and since you must get a 40% on the exam regardless of term mark, people with good marks ended up repeating. Not recommended
Dr. Fridgen is an alright prof. In order to do well in this course you must do a lot of work. The last few chapters that he taught were not very clear at all. His tests are extremly long and the final exam was very difficult. He is a nice and understanding guy, but a lot of work is required in this course.
The only prof who I had in my first term who actually tried to teach you to study and do work. He tries to encourage your learning and loves to teach you about his work. Excellent Prof!
Hhe's a great prof! His lectures contain info, followed by examples, and the reason he wants to you to buy a clicker is so he can evaluate immediately how well the class understands the concept he has just taught! He's making you do assignments to learn, not to be mean. Anyone that doesn't like him is too lazy to be in university anyways.
Great Prof. Fridgen is really clear and takes extra time if he feels you don't understand. Ask questions and he will answer them, not like some who just glance over the material.
He is the best. Very clear and very helpful and caring. Obviously he likes what he is doing.
Great prof one of the best first year prof's trust me. He prepares you for what you have to do in your 2 and 3 year in order to get good marks. The amount of work seems like a lot when your doing it but is a joke compared to higher levels.
this professor is great! :) he loves teaching and is always there for anyone who needs help. really prepares you for upcoming semesters. tests are hard but if you study, they are clear. gives a lot of assignments but are easily capable of completing on time. Love this prof. recommend this professor to all.
Clear and concise lectures. Material is explained very well and followed by examples. Tests are difficult but given you attend class, do the assignments and yse your clicker, you shouldn't have any trouble passing. Shows concern for the overall grades of the class and takes it upon himself to ensure that his lecturing is top-rate. Overall nice guy!
AMAZING PROF!! Seriously best prof I had so far! He explains the material so so well! the assignments really help and even though it seems as though there is one every night it really prepares you for your tests and such. his tests aren't so much hard as they are loooooooong! he shows great concern for how you are doing and will do anything to help
He is pretty good with explanation. I love that he use online assignment and clickers, they are really really helpful and encourage me to study eventhough the material is quite hard.
Excellent professor! You'll get a good mark as long as you're willing to work for it. He gives a lot online assignments but they are extremely helpful (especially for review). I would highly recommend Fridgen if you actually want to learn chemistry, want to be challenged, and like going to lectures. If not, try another prof.
Fridge cares a lot about his students thats for sure. If you willing to go to every single class then you'll probably do good. Test are tricky, he's a trickster. But there is ALOT of work with him, lots of assignments, some times everyday. Overall he's ok. I passed the course but i still need to repeat because i needed a higher grade.
Way cool prof. Get him if you can.
Excellent Professor. Tests were difficult, and online assignments due on weekends were a pain, but you were prepared WELL for the final exam.
I'd say one of the best, if not the best prof I've had
great prof ! clickers and online assignments are extremely helpful. Is easy to talk to. His tests are a little tricky, but if you work hard you'll be fine. The final exam was easy, the questions were very similar to test questions, some were exactly the same
Great Prof! a little bit intimidating at first but is actually really approachable. However if you don't really belong in the class you shouldn't take this guys courses. Keeps lectures interesting and includes any research he's done that pertains to the subject matter. Great prof, definitely my favorite in first year. Too bad he's a Sens fan.
Really good prof. Hard, but explains well, and does lots of examples. Intimidating at first but nice as the semester goes on. Had him for 1050 and got him on purpose for 1051.
He is a great prof as long as you go to class and do your work you will come out with the mark you need. He like makes you go so you need to. One of my favorite profs of all time so funny.
I couldn't stand Fridgen. I found him really arrogant and unhelpful.
Really good prof. Very clear and friendly. You know your stuff when you are done with him. He uses online clickers and assignments and sometimes does cool demos.
I hated this course, and I also hated this prof. All our midterms were 2 hours from 5-7 on fridays. The assignments and tests were ridiculous, and there were no tutorials because he didn't have time. He was gone for a few weeks of the semester to god knows where and we had bad substitutes. This course was the bane of my existence.
He's someone you want to hate but can't. Assignments were brutal, but were excellent preparation for tests and exam. He expected us to learn a lot of math we hadn't seen before, but I guess we're all better off now that we know it. He is very busy, but always responded to emails very quickly. He's a nice guy and wanted everyone to do well.
Assignments were heavy but extremely useful. You are well prepared for the exam. A lot of work but actually a fun course
He'll tell you right away that the assignments can't be done the night before, and he's right. Get a good study group and make sure you learn the material from them. The clickers force you to learn. Exams were fair and he's awesome with part marks. He let us rewrite the first exam in groups for a 5% bonus. He's tough, but get him if you can!
This is the third course I've taken with Dr Fridgen. He expects a lot, he demands that you know the subject matter well to complete his course. He expects a lot, but if you put in the effort he's extremely helpful. He shows an interest in the subject matter. i highly reccomend this professor, but be prepared to live in the help center.
Excellent professor and and a top notch guy. Phys Chem under the new corriculum is not easy but he helps you through by extensive work. Dr. Fridgen rewards effort on assignment and tests and will help you if you go see him. You leave the course knowing more about chemistry, calculus and excel. Make sure you get him at least once!
His notes and teaching style were excellent. His midterm and his portion of the final exam were much harder compared to the other prof. Also, he uses annoying clickers for participation, and most often you end up guessing at the answers. He does know his stuff well, and overall is a good prof.
Great Prof. Clearly explains, gives notes, uses clickers, video tapes his lectures online.. Get him, he is very clear and cares about teaching.
Excellent, highly recommendeed.
He is really hard, but I think he really knows his stuff. I'm just an imbicile sometimes. He really gives you a chance to pass, but you really have to work in this class!
Great prof. Really helpful outside of class. Tests aren't too bad, but the assignments are pretty difficult and take time. Really wants his students to do well and cares how they do in the course. Go to every lecture!
brilliant teacher, knows exactly what he is talking about, and knows how to teach it, his notes for 1051 can be printed off and workings are filled in. make sure to go to class, use your clicker, do your assignments, and do the flinn worksheets. tests can be a little bit tricky, but as long as you do everything you're guaranteed to do well
Fridgen is a good prof, but he's a very hard marker. He needs to give more than 2 tests, because there's so much material to study for one. You need to attend class because you have to answer questions using clickers, and if you don't answer them you lose points.Clicker participation is worth 6% of your final grade.Flinn is boring, but he marks easier!
Started off barely passing everything, but got better. The first test is fair, but a bit of a shock. Fridgen extremely helpful. Definitely go see him for help outside of class, he wants you to do well. The Assignments are ridiculously hard to force you to think. The tests aren't too bad.
Awesome teacher, seriously cares.
Welcome to university, you're not in high school anymore. You will have to work very hard in his class to get an A. That being said, he will give you all the tools you need and wake you up to what kind of work a science degree entails.
Great prof. However there are no give aways, the mark you get is the mark you deserve. Definitely recommended!
His tests are hard, but he is by far the most interesting and clear prof I have had. Also because he uses the clicker for class participation it's a lot easier for shy students to be involved.
RECOMMEND.he's a person a little bit serious ,but say things clearly (except cap 7,i cannot understand it!).Assignment are little heavy but pretty helpful!
Really great professor, I highly recommend going to class though!
really helpful in and out of class. lectures are a lot of fun
Great professor
Really hrd class! Need it for biochem. Fridgen really is helpful.
Dr. Fridgen is an unrealistic professor. He expects students to comprehend material immediately. He doesn't teach the material very well and expects his students to teach themselves using the textbook, which is also useless. The lab component of the course is also challenging however it, unlike the professor, was interesting. Do not recommend.
An excellent class and excellent professor. Rushed a bit at the end though.
Great prof very fair midterms and final. Attend class and tutorials and you will get a great mark.
he was really good..he know what he was doing
Very smart man. I would not have passed the course if it wasn't for him. Really interesting. Clickers and Internet assignments really are helpful.
Prior to taking this class, I thought I was going to die considering I was horrble at Chemistry in High School, but Fridgen changed all that. He was very clear, very helpful, and the tutorials were spot on. He never teaches what's not important and the tests are fair. If you fail, it's because you didn't put time in. This guy is spot on!
Very nice professor. He seems to want you to do well and will help you any way he can. Sometimes hard to get hold of outside class but he answers e-mail right away. Lectures are very interesting and you have to go for easy marks.
Overall a good prof, however he expects a lot from his students. He expects you to read the textbook before covering the chapter in class, which is difficult to find time to do if you're taking a full 5 course load. . He provides "Worksheets" with questions from the text to prepare for tests, which sometimes have nothing to do with what's taught.
Dr. Fridgen is by far one of my favourite profs this semester. However, he does go through material very quickly, but he is also very helpful and understanding one on one. His tests are challenging, so you must take time out of every week to study the material and READ THE BOOK. He doesn't like a talkative class, understandably. Overall, he's great
Travis will make the whole course interesting! He is one of my favorite profs. If you can get him, get him! He can take a joke but can be serious. He likes to be respected while teaching, so don't be too loud. His clickers question will help you out a lot. Make sure you read the textbook! His test will test your knowledge!
Amazing prof! Lectures are engaging, interesting and useful. He is eager to answer any question and is very approachable. Course is hard but he makes it clear and easy.
Awesome prof, cares how well you do and is extremely approachable. He expects you to have reviewed new material prior to class, which is pretty hard when you're in 5 courses. Lots of assignments but they really help you with material. Use the textbook, seriously, It will help you so much. HIGHLY recommend him. Tests are fair and easy.
Voice is very Canadian.
Lovr Fridgen! Knows what he's talking about, and can clearly teach it. Going to class is interactive and helpful. Tests are fair and prepare you for final.
Great Professor and really made chemistry an interesting topic. Great Speaker and Fair Tests. Also, the clickers he used are really good practice for exams.
The Bomb!!
Fridgen is a great prof who lectures well and designs his tests so anyone can pass. With the clickers and the online assignments it forces students to pay attention in class, as well as understand the material. Take a class with Fridgen you'll surely do well.
Fridgen is a completely excellent professor. His lectures are entertaining, test are fair, and he is very approachable. His notes are clear. If you keep up and go to class you'll ace the exam and course.. I can't say enough good about him. And he wrote the book.
He is a great prof. he is approachable and helpful. He gives usually lots of assignment to do and makes students do preparation before the class. He needs everyone to read the text. Exams are fair but lengthy. So funny and can clearly teach. You can ace the curse if you follow him
HE IS AWESOME! Very helpful and welcomes you to ask questions whenever you could. He actually wrote the book so he knows everything about it. The best prof I've had yet!
One of the best profs I've have thus far. Very clear in class and explains things in detail. Very interactive classes, we answer the questions on the slide from our phones, its very helpful. I would def recommend his class.
Definitely my favorite prof at MUN, he writes fair tests that challenge you to an extent but are very doable if you know what you're doing. He has a good attitude, can be strict but not very much so and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. His passion for the subject is phenomenal.
Fridgen is a great prof! He teaches the material well and is very helpful if you have any questions. Tests are fair. Would recommend!
If you ever get the option of taking any of his classes, take it. Dr. Fridgen is a really good and approachable professor. Sometimes, he brings real-life examples during his lectures too. His tests aren't hard, but you better prepare for them. Also, he co-authored the required textbook, so he really knows the material that he is teaching.
Maybe it's just personal preference, but I wasn't a huge fan of Dr. Fridgen. He definitely knows his stuff (co-authoured the textbook) and he tries to help, but I found his lectures confusing. I feel like I taught myself the course (using his textbook). He referenced his own work A LOT and, having never done physics, this often left me confused.
A decent chemistry prof. He uses clicker questions as a form of participation marks and to help students learn, but his slides are completely useless. MasteringChemistry has the most tolerable assignments out of any others that I've done. But when you ask a question in his office, he has a tendency to be very rude and unhelpful. He wasn't the best!
Really good professor. Talkes a bit fast but he helps you understand the course. Definitely one of the best profs I had this semester.
Fridgen is an amazing prof, but definitely tough with what he tests. Lectures are useful, but fast. Know the text inside out. Tests are consistent, and he is extremely fair! Always helped me when I needed it, and knows his stuff. Recommended for devoted students! I'd take Fridgen over anyone any day! if your class is smart, your tests are harder!
Favorite prof at MUN. Lectures were great and kept you engaged, especially with the clickers. Tons of examples and explanation in class made it easy to learn the material. Would definitely recommend.
Highly recommend! Ignited a passion in chemistry that I had never had in high school. Can't wait to take him again next semester!
What a fantastic prof. He makes things very clear, and gives you lots of opportunity to do your best. I hope to get him again and again.
His classes are interesting are engaging. He is a very good prof who cares about his students, grades fairly, and doesn't try to screw you over during tests. Tests were so easy! Here's my advice: don't skip class, do the worksheets he posts, do your assignments (easy most of the time), and read the chapters in the book before the test.
Dr Fridgen is my all time favourite prof at MUN! He really cares about students, he is all about interactive learning which is hard to come by in university, and his tests are fair. He is a very easy man to talk to and he gives great advice, he expects a lot from his students because he gives a lot and goes above and beyond for them always.
I had Dr. Fridgen for 1050, and I'm very happy I came back to him for another semester. He is so engaging and clear in his lecture. His test are 100% fair, he is not out to trick you! If you need help, he is there to talk to. Highly recommend for any incoming first year students!!
Amazing prof. Very into chemistry and helping his students. You can get an A if you work your butt off and read the text (essential to have). Does any type of example you will see on testsfinal in class. Tests are tough, but if you work for it you'll succeed. Had him for 1050, and would take for any course if possible. Highly recommend.
Dr. Fridgen was very helpful and friendly. His lectures detailed the main concepts covered on tests and exams, though studying the lecture slides may not be enough. Fortunately, he co-wrote the textbook, and it is very well written. Highly recommend its use, as well as choosing Dr. Fridgen as a professor.
Super awesome teacher, really clear, provides good examples on subjects and also does random small experiments during lectures to help you visualize concepts.
He definitely knows what he's talking about but get ready for a lot of work. His lectures are packed with information and he uses learning catalytics in every lecture to give participation grades. The work load for this course is huge. Many assignments.
Dr. Fridgen is a great prof. The course is tough but he goes at a good pace and tries to make everything as clear as possible. He gives helpful worksheets with answer keys, which are excellent for preparing for tests.
Fridgen is an excellent prof. Pretty sure I learned more from his class than I did throughout all of chemistry in high school. Going to class is pretty well mandatory since you get participation marks from clicker questions. The assignments were a bit annoying, but not too bad either. Overall, great instructor, mediocre course.
Dr. Fridgen was one of the best professors that I had in my first semester of university. His tests were very fair and he was always there for you if you need it. I'm taking him again next semester for Chem 1051 and I would definitely recommend him as a prof.
Material is tough, but posts his lectures online which is a godsend. Participation is graded. Textbook is needed to supplement his lectures because he doesn't explain everything.
Really good prof. I love Dr. Fridgen, he really knows his stuff and his slideshows are really good and clear. Tests are fair, especially the final. There are online assignments which I found really helpful. Textbook (which he co-wrote) is a really good aid. I would 100% recommend, I planned my whole second semester around him haha
Wow this class was easy. He's a great teacher but you will have an ungodly amount of online assignments....
Amazing prof, my favorite one so far. Taking again next semester, do yourself a favor and go with Fridgen. He tends to teach in the Engineering building and even though its out of the way he is totally worth it.
Fridgen's a good chemistry professor. He's clear for the most part. I found that he was very hard to get a hold of if you needed help understanding something, but I guess that's why we have the chemistry help centre though. I would recommend him to any first year doing Chem1050
He has been my best prof at memorial throughout my degree. He does so many examples in class with clickers questions that by the time the test come it is like second nature. He is also super easy to go and talk to about any questions. I would 100% recommend taking his class if you have the chance.
Dr. Fridgen is probably one of the best profs for first year chem. The course itself is pretty hard, but he does a sufficient amount of examples and his tests are fair. Important tip: print off all of the notes and keep them, you'll be lost if you don't have them to copy down his examples.
knowledgeable and a skilled teacher. participation is very important but is conducted through online problems. exams are hard at first but become simple when you learn what to expect. loves to answer questions and help, but has no respect for those who do not work hard. prepares you well for the final exam which is easy. worth getting to know.
Easily one of the best profs at MUN. I had him for chem 1050 and then built my schedule around his 1051 class for the next semester. His lectures are clear and he does some cool in class demonstrations. The tests are challenging but as long as you do the mastering chem homework (including the optional practice assignments) your grade will be good.
Travis is a good prof and very willing to help his students. The course covers a lot of material and you need to learn some stuff on your own with the textbook, as there is simply not enough time to cover all of it in class. Luckily Fridgen wrote the text book so the notes coincide well.
A great class, get ready to work though it isn't afree ride. You will learn a lot from Fridgen but you will work for your marks.
Dr. Fridgen is hands down one of the best! He posts lecture captures online which are very helpful for preparing for tests Does lots of examples and uses clicker programs for participation marks. He wants everyone to succeed in his class, but you do need to study, do examples and read the textbook to receive a good grade. Highly recommend him!
Had him for both 1050 and 1051. Fridgen is very knowledgable about what he is teaching (as he is an author of the textbook), & is also very enthusiastic. His tests are VERY fair, and always based on questions done in class and topics heavily discussed. Once you take enough of them, it's easy to predict what will be on them! 90+ in both courses.
Enthusiastic about chemistry so it makes lectures easy to listen to, however he assumes students level of knowledge on topics and does not explain even if critical to the point he is making. Lots of practice, clickers are a good way of learning. Seems to want really specific answers on exams and wont take anything else.
LOVE THIS PROF!!!! 10/10 RECOMMEND :)
Dr. Fridgen is a exceptional educator. He cares about his students and uses clicker questions to enhance learning in lectures. He expects you to read ahead before lectures and then uses lectures as a work period/traditional lecture. He co-authored the textbook, so his lectures are spot on with the text content.
Very good teacher and interacts well with the students. Extremely knowledgeable in the subject and is approachable and fair.
Amazing Professor!! Very clear lectures and the test questions are very fair. The clicker questions are extremely helpful and count as a 7.5% participation mark! Would definitely recommend
Dr. Frigden is an amazing professor! His examples in class are extremely helpful and prepare you well for the midterms and final. Some of the questions on his midterms are predictable! i would definitely take another course with him in the future :)
Awesome prof. Loves to see his students succeed. Participation marks are easy grade boosters. Attendance is pretty much mandatory. Always there to ask questions and is willing to help. Has awesome notes, and does lecture capture in case of missed class. Has a great sense of humour and keeps it interesting. Overall great prof. Call
Teaches by examples. Good for those who are example learners instead of theory learners. Lots of ways for extra marks. Amazing prof
Travis is one of the best chemistry profs I have ever seen, period.
Notes are very hard to follow outside of class so if you miss a class the notes won't make much sense. Seems like he assumes everyone already knows what he is talking about so he often doesn't explain some in-class questions. Exams were fair and straightforward. Lectured did not help me learn but that's just me. In-class questions every class.
Dr Fridgen is arguably the best first year professor I have had (and I have had about 13 so far). He cares about whether you learn the material and is obviously very passionate about chemistry and teaching. His lectures are very different and I highly recommend you attend the all.
Dr Fridgen is at sometimes boring as a lecturer but he truly knows his stuff. Very good for giving extensions and actually cares about you succeeding. I would take another course with him.
I had Dr. Fridgen for two semesters of chemistry and his teaching style does nothing for me. He assumes you already know what he's talking about so focuses on examples with little explanation. I never really knew where equations and numbers were coming from. His notes are weird and are hard to follow outside of class. LC questions every lecture.
Great prof who cares about his students. Uses Learning Catalytics in class so you have to participate and it's a good chunk of your mark, but look at it as free marks. The use of mastering chemistry helps learn the material, but if you really want to do well practice the problems in the book. I barely took notes, just showed up and did the work.
Good Professor, all evaluations were fair. Doesn't go over topics in depth and expects you to study the textbook so be prepared to do that. Majority of lectures are made up of example questions with many counting as participation marks so attendance is important as well.
On the positive side, his tests are very fair and you'll pass as long as you study. Besides this, I found the notes to be fairly useless. I thought the course content was dull and the lectures made it worse. He tended to come off as rude and tended to treat students like children at times. He made me feel dumb and didn't really seem approachable
Dr. Fridgen is a great prof, and seems very passionate about chemistry and the success of his students. Uses Learning Catalytics every lecture, so class is very focused on problem-solving, which I personally liked. Tests are fair, but the notes aren't that useful, so definitely use the textbook (it's a good learning resource).
Doesn't know basic math skills. Messes up more than he knows what he's talking about. If there's units in a problem be prepared to watch him struggle on how to cancel them out. Doesn't really explain any of the concepts just does examples that he messes up 24/7. Would say depend on the textbook but he made that too so it can't be very good.
Fridgen is a great prof and clearly enjoys teaching. You need to participate in class to pass.
Travis is a decent prof, his lecture notes did not help me at all I would just go to listen and for the learning catalytics (which he does every lecture). I just read the textbook and did the assignments which got me an A. I would take him again for the sole fact that his tests are super easy, exactly like the practice/old tests he puts on D2L.
Very passionate about chemistry. If you go to class and do the work youll do well.
Dr. Fridgen is a good prof and his midterms and finals are very fair and just like the samples he posts. I didn't find his notes very helpful but it would probably be better if you were taking them on an ipad. The course is heavy and you need to show up for learning catalytics
Fridgen is a great prof, would definitely recommend for first year chem! His lectures are awesome and he uses Learning Catalytics almost every lecture, which I personally liked. His notes aren't great imo, but the textbook is good, which made up for it; study the textbook, do the assignment and pay attention in class, and you should do great!
Fridgen doesn't sugar-coat things and makes you work for your grade. That being said he is very kind and helpful if you see him after class. Learning Catalytics is used every class, so be prepared to show up. LC and class examples are close to the textbook so reading ahead will save you. 1051 is tricky, but Fridgen made it pretty good.
Hard course but awesome prof. Interesting lectures and really explains things in detail. Notes are hard to follow on their own but he always answers questions thoroughly in class, and he's also very accessible and helpful outside of class. Review assignments and tests mirror his actual tests. Overall great prof. Would take him again for sure.
Love Dr. Fridgen for a prof. He doesn't baby his students but doesn't make things much harder than they need to be. For the most part, gives very fair tests and assignments. Does learning catalytics in class for participation marks. Is very understanding and knows what he's talking about. Textbook is very great also!! Would 100% take Fridgen again!
Dr. Fridgen is such a kind man, he cares about his students succeeding and will ensure you do so without babying you. Hands down the best prof.
Very good lectures. He is good at explaining concepts in ways that are easy to understand. He uses learning catalytics basically every lecture and you need to answer for participation credit in the course. Gives lots of examples for you to do in class which helps you practice and learn better. Great prof overall.
Really great prof!
I would definately take courses from Fridgen, especially first year. He is kind and very good inlectures. you can't get any better.
Travis Fridgen is great! He explains things very clearly and Learning Catalytics examples really helped me to retain information. Hes great at using technology to make chemistry easy to learn. He regularly answers questions on Snapchat and gave a fun Instagram video project for extra credit! Hes so kind and helpful, Id recommend him to anyone:)
Awesome prof. You need to attend class as Learning Catalytics contributes to your grade. Posted practice tests that were similar to term tests. Explained concepts well in class and gladly answered questions. Would definitely take again.
Make sure you go to lectures as he uses learning catalytics every class which are easy participation marks. Lectures are good and exams are fair. Overall a great prof.
Makes you so well prepared for evaluation! Lectures are mostly based off practice questions on learning catalytics, write them & the answers down actice them before midterms/final & do his practice tests & you'll get an A. Teaches this course in the best way possible. Take him over anybody else, you won't regret it. Study the book, he wrote it
Dr. Fridgen teaches you what you need to know. He often rambles into way too much depth. He posts old tests which are extremely helpful. His tests for the most part are fair. There has been the odd question that I had thought had come up out of no where though.
Great prof, tests are fairly easy and don't differ much from previous tests in the past. genuinely cares about his students doing well in the course.
Dr. Fridgen is a prof that I would recommend. His tests are very fair, and he posts a lot of prep material for them online. His lectures are sometimes dry; but lets face it, 1051 is a first year course so how exciting can it get?
Great prof! Grades tests very fair, provides previous years test for students to help with studying, tests are very similar to the ones of previous years! Learning catalytic's is done during class for marks so its important to go to class, lots of homework on mastering chemistry but it helps a lot!
Had him for both 1050/1051 and got a high A . Tests are fair and he posts practice tests that are very similar. Learning Catalytics is worth part of your grade so going to class is a must. Very friendly and gives lots of mastering homework but also gives extra credit assignments. Would definitely take again! If you have the option take him!
Dr. Fridgen is great. He prepares you well for tests and is accessible outside of class through snapchat or email. Very willing to help. Participation in class matters. He makes extra credit mastering assignments and a creative assignment to help boost your mark. If you have the chance take him.
I took Dr. Fridgen for Chem1050 and 1051 and he is an amazing prof. He uses Learning Catalytics in class and you are graded on participation as well as lots of assignments on Mastering Chemistry, but these make you well prepared for testing, which is often very similar to past exams he posts. Very caring and always willing to help outside of class.
Tough grader
relies on textbook a lot
A very knowledgeable guy who genuinely enjoys teaching. He puts effort into his lectures and covers pretty much everything that is found on tests and assignments. Tests and assignments aren't that hard either if you pay attention and do the homework. Also has a sense of humour which makes his lectures more enjoyable. Easy to contact outside of clas
He has lots of ways to get grades and do well in the course. The assignments and quizzes aren't hard but you learn from them. I hope the exam is similar.
Fridgen is a great choice for online! Many ways to boost your grade because a lot of marks come from things other than the chapter quizzes and final. Great lectures and answers all questions. quizzes are fair and you can use your notes. Posts chapter lectures and notes all at once so it is easy to plan it out.
Love, Love LOVE him!! 100% having him again next semester. Posts lectures by chapter, straight forward assignments and you'll ALWAYS know what is due when. So funny and he doesn't even try. Assignments are long but prepare you for quizzes. No trick question on quizzes and does not test on "hardest" question. Final exam 20%, chapter quizzes 6.2% :)
I enjoyed my class with Fridgen! The workload was a bit heavy because he does add some extra work, but it's clear that he cares about your success. I really didn't like the mandatory group notes for this class. Besides that, he was one of the best profs. His lectures are really good and he's quick to answer questions on discord.
Fantastic prof.
I found a lot of the material covered on the mastering assignments wasn't covered in his pre-recorded lectures as they weren't very in-depth and I found I had to heavily rely on the textbook to teach myself the material. However, his tests were very fair and his grading scheme is good so if you put in the work you will do well!
His lectures are short and not helpful when it comes to the assignments, I found I learned way more from reading the textbook then what I did watching his lectures. The lectures themselves were condensed versions of what we actually needed to know. His tests were fair but would definitely recommend purchasing a hard copy textbook for his class.
Lectures ar e pre-recorded and he gives live tutorials twice a week that are important and he answers all questions. Lectures are funny sometimes if you watch carefully. Lots of assignments help you lelarn and the tests are all online. THere are some hiccups but it works well and are reasonable. I am taking 1051 with him.
Overall great prof... Not much more to say honestly. Had him in engi one.
Good lecturer and cares about his students. He give long assignments which can be tedious at times. He also has a sense of humor that he should use more. If you put in solid effort you will do well, he doesn't ask for too much.
I loved this class and would definitely take it again. The mastering and learning catalytics assignments felt long but theyre all you need to study for the quizzes(1 per chapter) and are basically free marks. He doesnt give any surprise questions on the quizzes(or final exam) and it was super easy to get a good mark with a little bit of effort!
His online course offering for fall 2020 were the best out of all my courses this semester. He takes the time to teach every topic and more than what you need to know. his mandatory group lecture notes really help you to summarize each chapter and really helped me succeed. His testing is far better than any of my other courses. Highly recommend!
I took Dr. Fridgen's class during the 2020 Fall online semester and loved it! My favorite prof by far! Lectures were engaging, and testing wasn't difficult so long as you completed all the assignments. One negative was that he began the semester by giving us several review assignments all due within the first week, but it was easy after that.
Dr. Fridgen clearly cares about his students and his courses. He put more effort into his course than any other professor I had, setting up many ways for students to get help from him and other students. That being said the quality of his lectures dropped around halfway the semester, going from 5+ hours per section to barley 2.
Had him last year and he was an amazing prof. Now taking courses like organic where the prof is terrible I really did not realize how great a teacher he was and how prepared he made us for exams
I found him great. Quizzes were sometimes difficult but there were so many other easy assessments that doing well in the course was easy! Definitely a heavy course load but if you are willing to put the work in its an easy A. He put a lot of work into preparing the course and i t shows, taking him again for 1051.
He had difficult quizzes from time to time, and has a lot of assignment work, but he is a genuinely nice guy who cares about his students. He also is easily accessible outside of class, with both a Piazza forum and a Discord chat. 10/10 would take his class again.
Dr. Fridgen is a very caring prof. He is very accessible outside of class for any questions. I took Chem 1050 and 1051 with him online. There were two assignments and a quiz bi-weekly. His finals are very fair. If you listen, study, and practice you will be very successful!
Fridgen is a great prof. The quizzes could definitely be tough but nothing unexpected. It is a heavy course load and requires a lot of time and effort to do well.
Very easy to contact, lots of mastering chemistry work to do and a quiz almost every week.
a bit rough grader and the material on the quizzes is more difficult than his examples, but overall i'd die for him
Fridgen is a good prof, though his lectures aren't the most helpful. He wrote the textbook so he uses it a lot. Lots of chances to get your marks up. The quizzes are often harder than the examples he teaches but overall he's not a bad choice
Fridgen keeps lectures interesting, he provides good notes and lots of opportunities to improve your mark. He provides smaller chapter quizzes as opposed to larger term tests, which I liked. If you put the work into this course, you will do well. Be prepared to read the textbook, he likes to use it. (He did write it, after all)
Solid professor. His lectures are concise and teach you everything you need. He's super accessible outside of class and is happy to help anyone who asks for it. I'd happily take him again in the future.
Hes a really nice prof and has good lectures. lecture notes were almost impossible to read though. Quizzes and final were fair. Replies fast to emails. Overall good prof.
Travis is one of the better chemistry profs at mun. He's very clear with what the students have to know (he wrote the textbook after all), and really knows how to present it. Though his online lectures are lengthy and sometimes boring, he cares for all students and provides great feedback. It's not a hard course and I would recommend him.
He is very nice, and posts good lectures. The amount of assignments was very difficult to handle if you have a heavy semester load outside of Chem. But I would recommend him as he is very willing to help and prepares you well for the final.
An excellent class, I would highly recommend taking his course. Helpful and responsive on discord. Read the syllabus and announcements, he doesn't like to answer questions that are available
Dr Fridgen had great lectures that he clearly put effort into making. answered emails really quickly, even on a saturday am. he does assign a creative project, so beware if you arent a fan of that. best prof i had this semester hands down
Super interesting lectures. The course material was very repetitive but he made hislectures super-fun. Taking his course was one of the best things I did because I ended up being the easiest course I did all semester. He solves problems very quickly and will let you redo anything to increase your grade. Overall such a nice prof.
Dr. Fridgen was by far the best prof I've had. He provides many chances to increase your grade. He truly cares about his students. All his tests were fair and straight forward. He's always available to help if need be. You cannot go wrong with this professor!
I had him for 1050 as well and he was great. However my experience with him for 1051 is much different. He has become much more rude, getting angry at students for asking questions. His new flipped classroom method, which consists of condensed, hard to follow lectures and lots of live LCs is a failure, as it makes learning more difficult. Avoid.
Dr. Fridgen is one of the best professors I have ever had. He does his best to explain concepts. Although he has lots of assignments and quizzes, I would recommend any day.
Dr Fridgen clearly respects his students and wants them to do well. Amazing lectures and notes. I did not crack a book the whole semester except to do the biweekly assignments and chemistry is my highest average. Lots of ways to contact him outside of class since he has both a Discord server and Piazza. The creative assignment was a lot of fun too!
He's literally the best prof I've had at MUN! His lectures are awesome if you pay enough attention. You must buy a Pearson account for his classes to do assignments and have access to the textbook. He kindly replied all of my emails and wanted all of us to pass his course He's passionate, fun, and overall an amazing prof! Way to go Dr. Fridgen!
Very good teacher, very fair tests and exams, graded on many things which gave lots of opportunity to do well. Reading the textbook really helps when it comes to test time! More homework than expected. Would definitely take his class again.
Gives lots of practice and opportunities to boost grades. Very kind to students and will point you in the right direction if you have any questions. His split learning module can feel like a lot but the classes dedicated to practice and questions is very helpful to learn the processes.
Dr. Fridgen was an amazing prof and wants his students to succeed. His split classroom is very convenient and organized +online quizzes and exams. Lots of material for easy-grade boosters including his in-class learning catalytic which are graded based solely on participation rather than correct answers. Very accessible outside class.
Dr. Fridgen really knows his stuff and it shows in his lectures, I think the way he explains it makes it simpler. I did flipped-classroom which means you gotta take time out of your day to watch lectures rather than physically going, but it works for people with heavy workloads. Would take again very knowledgeable and willing to help.
Travis was a great prof! He assigned a lot of work but it was helpful for preparing for quizzes. He was very personable and his assessments were really fair in my opinion. His assignments are pretty straight forward and he is pretty lenient with due dates. he can be a bit condescending with his comments but overall, really good prof!
Dr. Fridgen was excellent! He is caring, fair, and gives lots of opportunity to improve your mark! Absolutely recommend him!
Dr. Fridgen is possibly the best prof I have ever had at MUN, he is very kind and caring towards his students and provides many opportunities to improve your mark. His assignments, quizzes, and exams are all very fair. I would definitely recommend him.
Great prof. Very important you show up to lectures to get a good grade, most of the quiz and assignment questions are also included in the in-class problems too. Kind of a tricky course conceptually but he is very easy to talk to and ask questions.
Dr. Fridgen was an amazing prof! He is very accessible outside of class and always willing to help. There are so many opportunities to improve your grade. Lots of assignments, quizzes, pre-classes, and learning catalytics which are solely on participation. His flipped classroom is very convenient and organized.
he is a great person, but i personally did not like his class. hard to follow, very lecture and assignment heavy. did give extra credit and grading was fair. i took the flipped delivery class and that could potentially be where i went wrong. he was very easy to reach and very helpful, i just didn't like the delivery
I would definitely recommend Fridgen for this course! Only two classes a week where there were participation questions and would help with all upcoming quizzes and assignments. He had online lectures available so you could teach yourself. All assessments were straight forward and easy to understand. If you have any difficulties, he will always help
He's just OK. His assignments could get a bit tricky, but overall it wasn't too bad. Big on doing things online, sometimes could get frustrating because he would occasionally make mistakes with the solutions. He also didn't open our final on time, other than that he's right on.
His flipped delivery mode can be challenging at times, the lectures are delivered all online and very time consuming to watch. Gives lots of assignments and opportunities to boost your grade in his courses, all online
Fridgen is not helpful. Multiple students have went up to him after class to ask questions and he just says to post it on discord for other students to help. His online lectures are outdated and do not cover all of the information we need to know. His in class are vague and he does not allow enough time to complete. It is so hard to learn from him.
Assignments are difficult one for each chapter but the quizzes are fair. Teaches a reverse model where you ask him all kinds of questions in class. Overall good experience. I would recommend.
Dr. Fridgen is a great prof, there's lots of opportunities to improve your grade and he cares about his students. my only complaint is that sometimes I find he expects you to just know things he does in his lectures and he doesn't explain them so if you don't know it you're kind of on your own, however sometimes reading the textbook helps with that
Lots of short assignments but also flexibility to get good grades. Great prof and class. I will take with 1051.
Don't bother trying to read his slides. completely illegible, one of the worst writting I have seen from a prof. He is great in every other way, it's truly a shame. I felt as though it really affected my ability to understand the material.
LOVED Dr. Fridgen! Be was by far the best prof I had this semester. Lots of easy assignments to help you boost your grade, he enjoys answering questions and will help if you need it! The flipped class was a big adjustment but I found it very helpful to be able to rewind the lectures or pause to take notes. 10/10 would recommend!
His flipped classroom method really helped with understanding the material better. Assignments were fairly simple if you understand the material, quizzes, midterms, and finals were both online, and they covered basically everything we already had seen before.
Dr. Fridgen is very accessible outside of class and his in-person lectures really help to understand the material better. The flipped classroom teaching style is great for independent learners and allows for flexibility. No midterms and the final was online and open book!
Dr. Fridgen is an incredible prof, he's very caring about his students and he is very accessible outside of the lectures. I enjoyed the flipped classroom for this course as I found that when we would do learning catalytics it helped me to better understand the material more than I feel that I would understand it if it was a stereotypical lecture.
I am very surprised of the high rating here, everyone I talk to about this prof has the same issues. Lecture videos are dated and full of adds, notes are unorganized, terrible writing (honestly, it's comparable to a cave man). It's just weird that the ratings on here do not match what people in real life have been saying.
Puts a lot of effort into his lectures
Dr. Fridgens class is via flipped model, meaning lectures are videos to be watched online, and practice questions take place in class, Fridgen is a great prof and he cares about his students, lots of work in the course, but nothing is too hard and its all an opportunity to increase your grade. if you put in the work its very easy to get an A.
Fridgen might be famous for his flipped classroom and I liked how he conducts his classes. It does require a lot of self-motivation to watch the lecture videos and the pre-class questions but its really for your benefit. He also has a class discord server so its super easy to ask questions and get answers very quickly from other students and him.
Fridgen is a phenomenal professor, he is very knowledgeable about all course content. I am currently enrolled in his 1051 class after completing 1050 last semester. The flipped classroom allows you to ask questions and practice with help rather than struggling at home. He is very easy to contact through discord and is always helpful.
he doesnt give extensions for assignments. he is very bad at answering emails. his final exams are very hard. his writing is unreadable which affects students in-class as well as outside of class due to his completed notes. nice and very knowledgable guy though.
Had for both 1050 and 1051. I enjoyed the flipped classroom model but make sure you stay on top of the lecture videos because they pile up fast. Loads of material that can be used for studying (Assignments, pre-class, textbook questions, learning catalytics, and many past midterms/quizzes). Overall, great class and a great prof, I'd say most agree.
Great lectures and very helpful
Overall great and wonderful class.
Professor Fridgen's flipped classroom approach is great - the lectures are helpful, and assignments provide good practice. unstuckstudy ai was a handy study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a solid course.
Flipped method would be great if his lecture videos were comprehendable, but the lack of organization and bad writing makes it difficult to follow along.
Very flexible with tests. Good course and good prof.
Great prof. Lots of work.
I didn't realize the course was being delivered as flipped classroom, so that was my mistake. However, he did not really explain the concepts that were taught in the video lectures. He would only do examples in class. The course itself was not that bad, however if you don't like online classes I wouldn't recommend this course.
I enjoyed his flipped method of teaching! Definitely a great choice if you are able to discipline yourself. Very friendly professor. Exam was long but not crazy difficult. Quizzes were simple if you watched the lectures and participated during the learning catalytics.
