Great class/professor. If you can stay on top of your lab work and remember to do your weekly questions you will pass with flying colours without any trouble.
Great prof! Loves trick questions. Aims for 69% class average. Loved his course
Easy Quizzes, Awesome lectures. Do your weekly homework, labs, show up to class and you should be fine!
Travis is the best teacher i had in my 1st year at UVIC. Very structured yet makes the occasional joke.
Travis is a good prof. Good lectures, good notes. HARD exams. Don't forget to study extra.
I attended a couple lectures by the other PHYS110 profs (when I couldn't make it to Martin's 8:30 AM, ha) and they made no sense to me. Martin explained the concepts in a much more straightforward and organized way; he made physics a lot more bearable than I expected it to be.
Took this course out of interest because I loved Astro 102. Notes are incomplete, tests on stuff he doesn't even touch on in class. Looking to trick you, if you think you know the material, think again. Gave harder calculation questions and then restricted calculator use.. Might take the course again, just never with him.
I took this class as a prerequisite, expecting it to be fun, and easy. It was anything but those. The lecture slides, and text book readings are irrelevant to what you are quizzed on. You will be tested on things you have never been taught by him. Dont take this if you want to maintain your GPA.
Took astro 101 cause I thought it'd be easy and interesting. worst decision ever.
I don't know where he gets his quiz questions from but definitely not from his notes or the textbook. Took it because everybody said that it's a fun and easy elective! well, it was the worst decision ever. If you don't want your GPA to drop, DON'T DO IT.
His quizzes include lots of trick questions. Even if you know the course material inside and out, there will be questions on each quiz that were not covered in lecture, or in the notes.
Like what other people said, his quiz questions are ridiculous. Some question are completely irrelevant to what we learned and a lot of it is from is lectures (which he writes In the syllabus that they're suppose to be material from the lectures). There's no other way to say it, but Travis is so extra for no reason, it's an intro course, chill out.
Quizzes were demoralizing. I lost interest in astronomy on account of his quizzes/grading methods. He is professional in terms of preparedness and class presence, but, the material he talks about in class is very basic compared to what shows up on quizzes. Felt like this intro course was a 4th year astronomy class. Would not take classes with him a
Tests were on material that was far more in depth than what was discussed in class. You will be tested on stuff that was not covered in class. I would not recommend this prof.
Travis is a really funny and nice Professor. Some of his quizzes were difficult but if you go to his office hours it is easy to do well. The class is more work than you'd expect however if you put in the effort it is a relatively straightforward course.
I TOOK PHYSICS 110 WITH HIM LAST SEMESTER, AND I THOUGHT HE WAS GREAT. SO I CHOOSE TO TAKE PHYSICS 111 WITH HIM. BAMM. TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY. LECTURE COVERS TOO MANY MATERIALS, AND I FEEL LIKE IT IS 1 HOUR AND HALF COURSE INSTEAD OF 50 MINUTES COURSE. MOREOVER, ASSIGNMENTS ARE FRIKING HARD. I CANT FIND HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS BY USING HIS NOTES
Very understand of students and how to gear the content towards them.
Such a good prof!! Lectures were interesting and funny, he made topics that could otherwise be quite dry and boring fun to learn. He's super helpful in his office hours and always answers questions in class to the best of his ability. you can tell he cares about the success of his students.
Test questions are based on material not covered in lecture. Many trick questions! Do not take this course with Travis Martin if you value your GPA.
The midterms were brutal, 45% class average. His lectures were really good though, and he is definitely passionate about the material and is overall a very effective prof at TEACHING, not midterm writing. Very accessible outside of class, which really helped with studying. Make sure to do the online assignments!
Good professor. Be sure to read the material ahead of class so you can follow along and ask questions about concepts in class. The midterms were tough but he scaled both of them. The final exam was difficult but manageable. A bunch of trick questions used.
Travis is a great prof, his lectures are always engaging and you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches. That said, his quizzes and tests are difficult, and often cover material that he just sort of glossed over in class.
Best physics prof for first year, assignments are tough, but do-able, midterms are easier than the assignments though, go to his office hours, hes really helpful
Travis does an excellent job going over how to set up problems in class. The online homework is horrendously difficult, but you get unlimited attempts, so if you put your head down, it's easy to get 100% with help from others. Compared to his homework, the midterms are a piece of cake, I suggest you go over every homework problem again before tests
Overall enjoyed the class, quizzes are hard so you have to put in the work for a good mark (I did not), but the labs really bring your mark up as well as, the clicker portion.
I find it hard to review Travis. His lectures are generally interesting and funny, but the quizzes are kind of ridiculous. I'm reviewing them right now, and its like... why... This definitely isn't a GPA boosting elective, and it will take up more time then you expect.
In general Travis is a good professor in the sense that he knows the subject material which he presents well. He his however very opinionated which results in him disregarding student concerns and questions. This professor needs to learn how to respect students, especially as a scientist. Top-notch arrogance; I do not recommend.
Everyone complaining about the quizzes are likely first year students not in the sciences. Of the 4 quizzes, 2 of them are open book so you have a guaranteed A. 10% of your overall grade is clicker so you get 100% if you go. At the end of the year he just boosted everyone's final grade an extra 6%! Highly recommend as easy A. Labs take long though
Travis is a great lecturer and knows the material very well. The quizzes are tough but he knows that and bumps everyone up 2-6% at the end of the course. He is very helpful outside of class if you show him you're willing to do well. At first this class seems impossible but once you figure him out, you'll do well. Work hard on the labs and iclickler
He prepared in terms of lecture structure and coursework. It clear that his quizzes are created to trick the student rather than to teach. i.e. Q: It is possible to scientifically prove the Earth is round. T/F A: F there is no "scientifically prove" in science. He is very arrogant and consistently belittles people whom have conflicting views.
Martin is a great lecturer and and definitely the best Phys 110 prof. In lecture he does lots of examples with general solutions which are super helpful when it comes to the homework. He does move pretty quick though.
I came from the states and I think that high schools in Canada go over some astronomy in their science classes, but with the science classes I took in high school it hasn't felt as if I'm just in an intro course. Quiz every weekend with 20 minutes to complete around 14-16 questions. They're open book but you don't have much time to look up answers.
he's a funny guy for sure if you're into more dry and sarcastic humour! other than that, this class is genuinely a lot harder than it should be for an "introductory" science course, especially if it's advertised as a non-science student oriented class. quizzes are only 20 minutes and even though I go to all lectures and read everything, still hard.
He's very strict on people not working together on labs and quizzes. It's hard to write extremely long labs without collaborating with others. Really does not allow students to work together and share ideas.
Fav Prof XDDD
Originally, I was annoyed because Travis marked really hard and I would study for hours and just barely pass, but in the end, he literally bumped up my mark SIGNIFICANTLY. Its like he knows his material and tests are hard, and he will reward you for lecture attendance and take into account that his class was hard. I actually really liked him.
Travis was an awesome prof! I found his lectures super interesting and he has a great sense of humour. However, the one thing I really didn't like was how ambiguous his questions were, and how difficult the weekly quizzes were. In the end, Travis did bump up my mark by 2 or 3 percent, as he does recognize that his questions are not worded very well
Explains difficult physics concepts clearly and is almost always in his office to help with homework
I really liked Travis as a prof, he was also my TA for physics so I got to know him decently well. Always clear and good at explaining topics, really easy to approach, I wish I would have gone to more office hours because he's incredibly smart and cares about the students who make an effort.
Travis is a great prof. He gives you the tools you need and it is up to you to use them correctly or not. Regarding the Class I took, Phys 111, his tests were tough but I found the final especially very brutal. Fortunately, labs and assignments are worth a total of 30% and its easy to get high grades in them. Good luck young physicists.
Good lectures and passionate about course material. He cares about reasoning behind physics instead of just giving formulas for people to do the problems. He teaches ways to think and approach questions and not just how to solve s specific problem. Extremely sarcastic. Known for giving hard exam and mid term questions. Be prepared to work hard.
Funny guy, lectures are better than Laidlaw's
You really need to speak up in his class. He asks a lot of question and really gets us interested in the material. He can be a little scary or intimidating, but if you read before class, and participate youll get everything you can out of his lecture. Really funny and great guy!!
Travis is very engaging in his lectures and they go by very fast. However, because he enjoys discussing things so much, he often has to rush the notes which makes it hard to keep up & retain the information. Assignments are hard, Midterms are easy if you know the material. In my lecture, Laidlaw covered the last bit & the material made more sense!
If youre on your death bed, youll have to get out of it and go to class. A doctors note likely wont get you an excused absence for more than a couple lectures, even if its for a serious illness or injury.
Love his classes but very difficult for beginner astronomy, do not take his course expecting an easy elective
Amazing prof, 10/10 recommend
Travis Martin is the best!
Wonderful class, but diffcult homework
Amazing professor. I feel that he truly passionate about his field, he has an answer to any question. Never have I been so engaged in a lecture, he is charismatic and knowledgeable. His quizzes / tests are not east, BUT THAT IS A GOOD THING. Would take again 100%
Lots of tests but theyre all open book. Labs are a bit difficult and take lots of writing. Prof is funny and makes a bland topic interesting. Uses clicker questions each class to take attendance
If you want to spend more time working than for any other class and still receive a low grade because his assignments and test are inordinately difficult and he only does the minimum scaling required, then take a class with Travis Martin. He causes struggle and burn out to help your future... saving you from grad school with your lowered gpa.
I recommend this course as a prerequisite for elementary ed because you learn helpful basic science information as well as really interesting astronomy. He is an amazing professor and the lectures were very interesting. However, the online quizzes and final were really hard. It's harder than you'd think for a course for "non-science students."
Travis is an excellent lecturer who is knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. Awesome sci-fi related tangents that are entertaining and insightful, always willing to take questions from students during the lecture and will fully admit when he doesn't know something. Clicker questions to gauge attendance for an easy 10%. Open book quizzes.
Amazing physics professor, take him if you have the chance.
He was really funny and the lectures were interesting. I liked the sci-fi references but sometimes it seemed like a bit too much. Sometimes I found the quizzes kind of hard, I had difficulty finding the info in the notes even though the textbook was supposed to optional. But I might just be dumb.
Travis is pretty arrogant, and seems to think he knows everything about everything. He words his questions on his quizzes and exams in a way that makes it seem like he's asking one thing, when really he's asking something else. He seems to take pride in confusing his students. He is a very smart guy though, he knows his stuff.
Pretty average instructor. Can make some people feel dumb in class because he seems to have very little empathy for being a student. And such an unreasonably harsh assignment/test writer and marker. Geez! It's very difficult to do well in his class, and you probably won't learn much, to be honest. If you have other options you, use them.
I didn't enjoy learning from Travis. The quiz's seem random and unrelated to lectures and are unreasonably difficult to understand and answer. He claimed that 15 people dropped the class after the first quiz and seemed to take pride in this. Lectures feel condescending and I had to close my laptop multiple times in annoyance.
Travis tries and I get the impression that he wants us to succeed. However, the assignments are super complex and are supposed to teach us stuff rather than be for practice which makes them difficult. The exams were not very similar to assignments so it's hard to study for them. Finally, if you email Travis he will probably rip you apart.
Very lecture heavy, especially now online the lectures take around 3 hours to get through each. His quizzes make zero sense. He words everything differently then he does in class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU PLAN ON GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL.
When it came to lectures I found them to be hard to get through at times. For an online class setting, I found it hard to adjust at first since the quizzes are mainly the application of knowledge vs memorization of terms. I'm sure in an in-person setting lectures would be fantastic since I always loved the weekly meetings. Exceptional person!
I think Travis must have been bullied in school. I do not recommend him as an instructor: He will make you feel bad about yourself, burn you out with too much work, you won't learn effectively, and you'll get a bad grade. I would feel sorry for him if it wasn't my future on the line.
Travis Martin is an alright lecturer, but his tests and quizzes are brutal.
All my years at Uvic he is truly the worst prof I have ever taken, yes the course is hard but I have taken other hard courses with different profs and the level of stress wasn't the same, Travis thinks he's the best in the department and has a huge ego problem, his way of teaching is alright but his tests and assignments are on a different level.
I am currently in this class and really enjoying it. Professor martin is so knowledgeable about astronomy, and he his deeper, physics-based understanding is clear in this course. I personally find his class very engaging as well, with a great balance between the fun, aesthetic astronomy and the interesting theoretical side.
I would not take this class if you are looking for an easy A, however, Dr. Martin did an amazing job at helping me when I asked and even took time to go through each question on my quiz. It's way more beneficial to go to the lectures rather than the videos but both work. Overall, hard class but a very good prof.
MEAN, MEAN, MEAN. Absolutely the worst prof I've ever had. He is disrespectful and has no regard for those that are new to astronomy and science, although this course is an elective and for non-science students. I was hesitant when I read his other reviews and thought he can't be that bad but he is. 10/10 don't recommend
Travis has by far been my favorite professor. He is very passionate and really cares about the material; and he's pretty funny to boot! Although his tests can be challenging, he gives more than enough chance to offset this. Everyone bashing him for being a bad teacher are just hating cuz they were expecting an easy grade. This is Uni; Grow up lol
He makes things interesting, but he frequently speeds through complicated concepts, and wastes time talking about Sci fi. Sounds cute until you're off teaching yourself what he should have taught you. His tests are an abomination and don't test for knowledge; instead it's either trickery or poorly worded. He is arrogant and rude outside of class
Lectures are very useful for understanding content. Tough class but he is a good teacher overall.
Travis Martin comes off as a very miserable, arrogant, and rude person. His tests are full of trick questionsit seems to be asking you one thing, but is actually asking you something else. For an outreach course intended for non-science students, the difficulty and volume of work is ridiculous. Dropping 102 from my next semester because of him.
Very important that you attend lectures, as he constantly gives helpful information (such as how to pick out the important info from a question) not found in a textbook. Very upfront and real, which could be perceived as rude or inconsiderate to some. Explains content in ways easily understood. Feels like he cares about students and their success
He's a socialist..... so..... perfect score
Travis Martin made me hate myself and question my degree. I have never hated a prof until Travis. Unfortunately he is the only one who teaches 323 so you can't avoid him. Unless you are literally a genius you will fail almost everything in this course. The midterms are unnecessarily hard and he will blame you for being dumb. I'm sorry.
He does not take responsibility for his poor teaching skills. He was behind in lectures and instead of pushing the midterm until after we have covered all the material, he said "Learn what you need to learn", then blamed the class when everyone failed. He continued to not teach the content required to complete the assignments. I hope he sees this.
Immature and blatantly disrespectful. Does not accept responsibility for his failures as a professor, and places all of the blame on his students for not trying hard enough. Puts on quite a show about wanting his students to succeed but his exams and assignments do not reflect this, and he frequently fails to teach the required material altogether
Obviously passionate and knowledgable, but the quizzes were BRUTAL. For a 100 level course available to all faculties, the tests did not reflect this. Questions were bonkers and seemed like only those with a lot of knowledge on the subject would be able to answer confidently. Could have been a really cool course, but I did not enjoy my experience.
He's a little bit of a jerk from what I've heard, office hours seem rough, but other than that, great lectures, gives all you need and a bit more. He answers all relevant questions(even stupid ones, which is great). The course sucks though, but that's not his problem, they try to teach stats in the lab manual(&only there). Pretty sure 120 is easier
Quizzes were really hard for a first year course. I took this class in hopes for a GPA Booster but this class is probably the hardest one I've taken this semester, and all my other classes were 4th year courses. The lab portion was time-consuming but I would say was the most interesting part.
Worst class I have EVER taken, I spent more time on this "intended for non science students" class than I did on any of my stem courses. Quizzes were beyond brutal, labs took insane amounts of time. He was constantly giving his opinions on everything, comes across as having a massive ego also. Avoid at all costs!
Physics 110 absolutely sucks. You can thank Dr. Mark Laidlaw for that, but having Dr. Martin teach this class is certainly the better of the two evils. It took me awhile to get used to his lecture style, but once I did I quite liked him as a professor.
One of the hardest classes that I've taken. literally killed my interest. he made it a competition... class average was 40-50% before the final. seems to have a holier than thou attitude.
The concepts in PHYS 110 are confusing, but he explains them decently. However, when you confront him with questions, he is condescending and sometimes outright refuses to answer your question. Also, he almost never responds to his emails. I would avoid him if you have the option. I gave a 5/5 to all my other profs, so I'm not being unfair.
I was ready to tie the knot on that 5/5 but big last minute fumble on the game winner with that rescheduled exam. Watch the exam average be higher than usual, he will probably just play it off as some sick and convoluted teaching method they're studying.
Compared to Laidlaw, Travis is a much better prof. Sure he ain't the best, but he is pretty good for a first year prof. When you go to class he actually explains the material, so much so that I got away with never watching their stupid videos before hand. Best tip is to keep a formula sheet throughout the course.
I really enjoyed this course and I found Dr. Martin very informative! True, this course is difficult, but if you take the time to take good notes and not just copy slides, youll do great! Sure, he comes off as a little abrasive at the beginning, but you warm up to him eventually. I found the lectures super interesting and fun and the labs are easy
Travis made this the worst class, which is hard to do because astronomy itself is so interesting. Travis "teaches" by off of the slides the whole class, I didn't learn anything from him. The only thing I learned was how to google 45 questions in 60 minutes. Also, he gets all his questions from Quizlet. I don't know how he still has a job.
Better than Laidlaw but that's the best thing I can say. The lab manual he wrote is a disappointment: confusing, contradictory, unrelated to lectures, littered with mistakes, and poorly explained. Even the TA roll their eyes during their briefs, though they do their best to hide it. He seems insecure because he always brings students down.
Lectures and notes are clear and easy to follow. Reasonably well taught. lab manual is nonsense and labs do not follow class learned. Very rude to myself and many other students, especially in emails. Has a chip on his shoulder that makes dealing with him a chore.
Definitely the best of the 100 level physics profs, but be ready for a tough grind. He is usually unhelpful in office hours.
Travis is actually a really good professor, he does take some getting used to and you may have to temper your expectations, but you will find he (along with Dr. Laidlaw) is not trying to fail anyone. The class is tricky but fair.
Travis Martin is the best first year physics prof. He is excellent at explaining and organized in class. His grading system is forgiving, he doesn't like to fail people. My only issue is the way he answers questions in class. It is never done with respect, almost like he wants you to feel stupid for being brave enough to put up your hand.
Travis is the GOAT when it comes the first year Phys profs. More than half the people that would come to his lectures were from other sections. He explains concepts well and in a way that gets you interested. I took PHYS 110 and 111 with him and I can say he was one my favorite prof in first year engineering.
Travis has great lectures that are clear and easy to follow. He explains concepts very well. His notes are laid out really well which makes them a great study tool. He makes his lecture enjoyable and I always looked forward to going. I took Phys 110 and 111 with Travis and he is by far a much better prof than Laidlaw.
This course was neat but Travis himself was pretty pretentious. For a course aimed at non-science students, he had ridiculously high expectations. His quizzes were ROUGH but the labs were interesting.
I'm not a science or math student but have to take one science course to become a teacher. This class is supposed to be geared towards non-science students but that is absolute nonsense. Travis expects you to have full knowledge of some subjects going in, his quiz's are killer, and he said the class average on the final is 60%. Don't do it.
Travis' lectures were definitely a huge improvement from the lectures I had in PHYS 110 with Dr. Laidlaw - he writes down everything you need to know for each chapter, goes through examples and encourages questions during lecture. He may not be the nicest via email, but he is certainly the opposite in-person! I recommend taking physics with him!
If you have to take 110, take it with Travis! He encourages participation in lectures, explains material well, will answer any questions, and (decently) down to earth. Laidlaw's a nice guy too but his lectures are not it. As for the course, it's tough but similar to phys 12 (with an extra layer). IMO, the assignments were harder than exams.
No science class is easy HOWEVER this one is amazing if you are genuinely interested and geared towards no prior knowledge of astronomy. The prof is *chefs kiss* for this class - genuinely passionate about astronomy and his expectations are clear from the beginning. Easy to succeed in. Gives practice quizzes and genuinely wants you to do good.
I think Travis was great! I was in the Zoom section of the class, which he managed well. The tests for the whole class (including final exam) were all online, open book so some of the Q's were tough. Labs + quizzes did make for hefty course load, but doable. Best part was the chance for bonus marks - definitely worth it!
If you can avoid this course at all cost.
Travis Martin is a good prof and explains concepts well enough. Pretty tough most of the time but it really seems like he loves his field of study and that translates to his lectures.
Really great in lectures. Lab manual was atrocious. Not the best communicator in emails either.
Very difficult, expect to put in a ton of time on homework and studying. Exams are hard but fair, if you have a solid understanding of all concepts exams should be doable, lectures were some of the best ive had, explained concepts very well
Good prof
Dr. Martin is an effective lecturer but seemed irritated about teaching his students. He seemed to take pride in having a low class average and was occasionally rude/condescending towards questions during lecture. Exams were multiple choice only, with questions relying on previous answers, so tanking your grade with a small mistake was very easy.
He's fiery, and can be pretty short tempered, but this class was tons of fun. Lectures were engaging, informative and well structured. I recommend going to class, taking notes and reviewing before the quizzes.
Travis is extremely intelligent and it shows. His lectures are told in a way for everyone to understand and he fits so much information into his classes. My biggest pet peeve is going to a lecture and learning nothing, but luckily this never happened with Travis. I learned something every time. You just have to listen to him, you will learn so much
Do not take Astr101 as a elective. Dr Martin is a cocky, lazy, terrible teacher who does not care about his students. Astr101 is supposed to be for 'non science students, but he treated it lik a 4th year science class, expecting us to know everything already. His lectures are very boring and there is a lot of complicated math involved for the labs.
I'm not sure what he's like as a physics prof, but he seems like a pretty good astronomy prof. He is very accommodating to personal issues and he seems genuinely passionate about what he is teaching. Although his quiz questions can be worded a bit strangely at times, his quizzes and final exam felt fair. I find his blunt personality entertaining.
Heard bad things about him teaching Physics, but for Astronomy he has set the course up to make it as easy as possible for you. He has a very direct personality which leads to some funny interactions in-class. He also really really doesn't like Astrology lol.
Prof. Martin is a great lecturer, and his analogies are very interesting. I would not recommend this class to anyone going into pure sciences such as physics or chemistry as the course is very information-heavy, and there is almost no math. This is an excellent course for non-science majors, or anyone interested in astro.
Disclaimer, I really like Travis. I have taken 3 classes with him and enjoyed all of them, but I understand why some people might not like him. He is very passionate and clearly likes what he is teaching. Some of the classes are obviously harder than others, but he shows that he really cares about students and doesn't want to see them fail
Lectures are understandable, with words clearly spoken and writing legible. The exams are relatively tough, but not impossible as long as you pay attention in class and do take the time to finish the assignments.
Very passionate and very helpful when asked a question (most times) and he doesn't make questions sound stupid even if they are basic. Sometimes goes through his algebra very quickly and is hard to follow but if you ask, he will explain it. Overall very much enjoyed this course although exam seemed harder than the midterms.
Prof. Martin is an engaging lecturer, and although I did not once attend office hours, seemed to care very much about his students. I went into the course with no interest in astronomy, and came out with an appreciation for how my chosen science is applied to it! I would take another course with Prof. Martin if I had room in my schedule!
If you are taking PHYS110, take it with Travis Martin. He makes concepts easy-to-understand with very in-depth examples, and, if you struggle to follow, he will gladly pause the example and answer your question. Do be warned though, he can be a little sassy if you ask a question that he might interpret as you not listening.
I found Dr. Martin's lectures to be good overall, but he would write out extremely long calculations that were confusing and unhelpful. But, he was very engaging and would answer all questions well. This course is a lot of work! The final is worth at least half of your grade and I found it very hard. Study well and use his Zoom office hours.
He's a fun guy. Was once spotted playing Clash of Clans on the way into class. I was unable to obtain the name of his clan. Other than that, his lectures are reasonably fast paced, methods rarely confusing as long as you just accept some variable as a separate thing, and has a great down-to-earth tone that is really easy to listen to.
His lectures are very informative but there is a lot of learning outside of class. He does a really good job at explaining the concepts in a digestible way. Sometimes he does calculations that you have no idea why you are doing them, but then he explains why at the end.
Travis is a fantastic prof. He breaks down the difficult physics 110 concepts into simple examples, and throws in the occasional joke or bit of banter. He keeps the class engaged and constantly asks for audience participation which is awesome. Just remember to not slack on the final. I did and it dropped my final grade by 20%
Very difficult grader. Can be quite condescending in both lectures and on assignment feedback. Never failed assignments before this class, and this was my elective. "Quizzes" are more like midterms. Labs are done poorly and not taught well at all. Grading criteria in the manual and outside the manual are different, which is confusing.
Not suitable to be a first year prof at all. Takes a lot of stuff personally, is a condescending person in general, structure of course is very poor etc. He reminds me of one of my high school teachers who got fired
Instruction was clear and engaging. Final exam and coursework is set by the department so not mentioning that.
Seems very knowledgable, but quite a condescending and arrogant professor. Makes students feel incompetent when they ask questions.
Unflexible.
Lectures are well organized and material is communicated clearly. Questions were answered well.
Professor Martin is knowledgeable, but can come across as condescending at times. The course structure and grading can be unclear. However, his lectures are engaging, and Unstuck study proved a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
Travis was phenomenal for PHYS323. (But watch out for the final!) He wants you to learn, and corrects mistakes as soon as he sees them. I think misinterpreting this directness as arrogance is the source of many of the bad reviews. A lot of counterintuitive information was introduced, but his assignments and in-class examples covered it in depth.
Honestly, Travis is literally the goat. I didn't even have travis in my section and I ended up going to his class because my professor was completely incompetent. Travis gets a bad rep being affiliated with Mark, Travis genuinely cares about his students and is extremely respectful of their questions and opinions.
Travis is incredible! His lectures are engaging and he has the ability to take something complex and explain it to you at the appropriate level. He can be very direct, which can come across as rude if you're not used to it, but it's just his way of communication; he really cares!
Idk why people dont like him, for a first year PHYS 110 is definitely a tough course, but i Love travis, he is my favourite professor. He knows what he is teaching, he knows his stuff well. He motivates you to answer the question even if you are wrong. Overall 10/10 for Dr Martin.
if you are taking phys110 go to his lectures
Travis martin is a pretty decent prof, a bit condescending, sometimes makes you feel stupid but his lectures were engaging and always seemed to go by quickly.
Dr Martin is a great physics prof. He explains the concepts really well and gives you the formulas you need. He is great for learning the theory. The actual course is very difficult though.
Good lecturer. Obviously very passionate about the material. Very fair grading. You will NEED to supplement the lectures with the textbook and textbook problems (He even says this). Even with that I had to put in loads of work to feel competent with the material.
The rewrite of this course is successful. The spin-first approach will be a bit confusing at the beginning, but the mist will dissipate at some point later in the semester. The grading is rigorous, but don't panic, he will scale the grade to make sure the final grade is fair.
Overall, Professor Martin is a pretty good prof especially for such a notoriously difficult course. His lectures are fairly easy to follow but he does come off as a little condescending. I think it's out of enthusiasm for the course and helping students but it certainly can be a little shocking. Seems pretty chill.
He good fr
Travis explains much of the physics that the students should already know. At times he has a condescending tone showing us that he is smarter. The best way to study for this course is to watch the lecture videos posted online and complete the teaching assignments to understand the concepts using other youtube videos too. His lectures are not worth.
The Lectures were interesting and the marking was very fair. The only thing I would say is that some of the quiz and test questions were a little ridiculous due to the fact that they were student written, and designed in a way to be standout difficult.
Overall Travis was a great prof. The course itself was quite challenging but his method of teaching explained the topics clearly. I can see why people might say he's condescending but he's really not. He isn't afraid to say you're wrong but he doesn't put people down when they are, just explains why they are. He's a g fr
I took this course last spring with Dr. Martin. While he seems incredibly knowledgeable and passionate for the subject, he falls short due to his arrogance and condescending demeanour. Students were often met with responses to their questions and answers as though we were inferior to him. The tests were quite difficult, but it's great content.
Travis Martin is an amazing lecturer, I attended and thoroughly loved every lecture. His explanations and examples guaranteed my understanding of the course material. It's a shame that Travis Martin doesn't teach more of my required courses, as he's one of my favourite professors. Furthermore, he's easy on the eyes. 5 stars.
Good lectures, very dense. Online quizzes but still quite hard. If you use AI he will find you. Labs involve writing a 2000 word lab report biweekly. If you were told to take this course because it was easy, DO NOT. Travis is a strong lecturer but tests are very memorization heavy which left an overall bad taste in my mouth when I think about him.
If you are looking for a fun elective, I would not recommend this class. Travis is a super cool guy with good intentions, but the quizzes/tests are almost impossible to get good grades on because of the way they are written. The content in the course is interesting, but I was too stressed out about the quizzes to enjoy it.
Such a rude prof. Won't hear anyone out.
I appreciate Travis's passion for academia. However, I did not enjoy this course. I found the tests (worth 60%) were unreasonably difficult. The labs were 3k words long and due every 2 weeks and only worth a tiny potion of your grade. However, the labs/assignments were interesting and the marking was fair. The class average was only 66%.
Travis is a lazy professor. It is clear that he does't care about teaching and only cares about doing the least amount of work possible. When grading, it is as if he randomly chooses grades to give out and will mark things wrong that are clearly right, and vice versa. It is as if he spends less than 30 seconds marking each assignment. Avoid.
He is like that guy who got bullied in his school / university and now uses the tiniest chance he gets to abuse his power.
His explanations of concepts were very good, and I quite liked how he organized his lectures aside from when he would make up examples on the fly and they would end up not being very good examples. He sometimes came across as a bit condescending when answering questions though.
Worst professor I've ever had. Many trick questions, many of the quizzes had wrong answers.
He is "Isac Newton" of our era
Out of the current professors for PHYS-110 Travis Martin is the best choice out of all of them. His lectures are funny and entertaining and as long as you do the work it's not a hard course
Very intellectual professor who engages with students during lecture. He also is available outside of class in his office hours. His lectures also encourage personal study to fully understand concepts. The homework questions are adequately difficult and tests your knowledge. The labs however are very self-taught and have significant learning curve.
I really liked Travis' lectures. He is very good at explaining physics topics, and his lectures are very efficient. You can tell by listening to him explain topics that he clearly knows what he's talking about and is interested in it. Just a shame that the testing system of PHYS110 is purely multiple choice.
As a second degree student, the "this is just how university is," grift isn't working on me. Travis is a lazy, condescending, and unaccommodating professor. The textbook is an unorganized mess. All the tests are multiple choice. Assignments are due the day relevant material is visited. Get ready to teach yourself. Loved physics before this class.
Really good at explaining concepts. Makes a good effort to properly answer questions.
In addition to being a sort of condescending and "welcome to university" type professor, Travis cleaerly does not want to be teaching physics to a bunch of first-year students. The exams are all multiple choice, but are similar to the practice exams. The labs have absolutely nothing to do with the class and have a huge learning curve.
He can be kinda intense, but is usually reasonable. This is a hard course. The final is worth 50% (or more, as it can replace midterms) and really determines your overall grade- I had an A+ going into it ): I never took physics 12 and hadn't taken any physics since early 2022, but I managed to snag a B+. Watch Laidlaw's lecture videos.
Very good at explaining concepts, but hates teaching first year students. Lectures are question driven, and he is very blunt with students. Because of this the class was hesitant to answer questions, and we were then blamed for the pace of the class when students complained about homework material being covered the day it was due.
Doesn't seem to ever be in a good mood. Tests are hard. Does all the notes hand written and doesn't upload them after so you have to go to lectures.
He is a passionate guy, but is very stubborn - classic academic. His lectures were well planned but often unhelpful and confusing. It's clear he is more focused on research than teaching.
