Probably the best professor I have ever had. History is not always the most interesting subject, so there is a lot of weight on the professor to make it so. He is the most passionate person about history that I have ever seen. Very loud, animated, and funny. Not too tough on grading. Very little info from the textbook, so it's important to show up
Very enthusiastic and kept me engaged during his lectures. Tons of information to take in as well. He doesn't give any hw, but its important to attend his lectures and take good notes. Overall, he's really great :)
Very enthusiastic during his lectures. Makes learning about history exciting. I never enjoy history until I took this class. Had 3 exams, 2 map quizzed, 2 papers. It's easy as long as you come to class, take good notes, and do the required novel reading.
amazing teacher! i cannot say enough about him! he really loves his subject and it shows in how he teaches. he's young and energetic. super sweet, funny, and has gone to most of the places you'll learn about. speaks 7 or 8 languages too! so when he talks about the places, histories, and peoples, he really knows what's what.
Easily the Best Teacher Ive ever had. He loves his job and it shows. Class was 3 tests 2 map quizzes and 2 Papers. As long as you go to class and take good notes along with the study guides his puts up before hand its not too bad. Can be a tough grader but he covers all the material really well. Makes History enjoyable.
Great teacher with extreme enthusiasm for the subject. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you don't show up, you most likely won't do good on the tests (because he doesn't use the book). There were probably 5-6 graded items which makes each count heavily towards your grade.
Professor Ritt made this class very interesting! The class is not easy, you have to take a lot of notes and keep up on the novels he assigns but it is possible to get an A! He is always willing to help students to want to be helped.
ok this teacher is so sick. he loves his students, he wishes the best for his students. he gets so excited for he lectures that it gets me excited to go to class. but althought he does care for his students, if you dont try in his class, then he try to help you. i learned so much and i recommend him to anyone
Very enthusiastic and made the class fun! The papers were hard but if you schedule a meeting to go over rough draft you and make corrections you will do good. Also take a lot of notes. The study guides are awesome and even if I thought test would be hard his teaching style made it easy to understand! Love him for a teacher!
I've always had an interest in history, but he is the best history teacher I have had yet! Always makes everything exciting and easy to understand! there are a few papers but he is willing to help with whatever you need. Very enthusiastic also, makes the class easy to go to. Take him!! You won't regret it!
You will love history after taking his class. Travis is the man! His lectures are never boring EVER, and he is always charismatic, fun, and engaging. He's also a very kind and thoughtful, intellectual guy who will teach you about life outside of the classroom. Enlightening class. Loved every minute.
What an outstanding professor. He has such a passion for history and it really inspires his students, including myself. Not only do you travel through different civilizations, you learn how they fall, how they get up, how they impact other civilizations. Amazing class. I would recommend him to anyone. He is one of the best professors on our campus.
awesome guy, very entertaining, never bored in that class, but grades pretty strict.
Amazing professor! Class is always so much fun. He is really funny, directions are very clear. He reminds you about everything going on every day. He is strict on the grading but it really pushes you to work hard and better yourself. This course was very enlightening. Definitely take him if you can!!!
Thi guy is the man. His lectures are well put together and he effectivley teaches the subject matter. He expects you to learn the material but at the same time you're motivated to do the work because the way it's presented is so iteresting.
I took this professor for both History 107 and 108. He is a fantastic professor. He is lighthearted in his teaching styles and gets super passionate about the subject. He lets you know exactly what you need to do in his class to succeed. It is your own fault if you do poorly in his class. He gives you chances to improve.I highly recommend him!
I took this professor last semester and he is an amazing teacher! I wish there were more teachers like him! He would share about his family and be genuinely interested in our interests which made the class comfortable and familiar. His lectures are the best i have ever seen! He tells you what you need to know and the importance! Love his passion!
He is definitely passionate about what he is teaching, but he directly insults students for no reason other than the fact that he can. He grades and teaches subjectively on essay questions and the essays, and takes off points just because he can. Probably a nice guy in life, but not a very good teacher. I would not take a class from him again.
What an excellent professor. He has clear deadlines and guidelines for absolutely everything, and constantly lets us know that he's there to help. If you put in the effort, you will soar. He has made me as passionate for history as he is!e Each of his lectures is an adventure. You will travel the world simply by sitting in your seat. Love him.
Second semester I have taken him and once again I was not let down. Challenging class but he gives you every chance to succeed show effort show up and you'll be able to keep up. I can't stress how awesome of a teacher this guy is!!!
Doctor Ritt is the best Professor I've had in eight semesters at Palomar. He is passionate and holds his students accountable. Very entertaining and inspiring. I would definitely recommend!
Excellent history teacher. Actually teaches the class and doesn't show videos or movies to make a point. Tests based on lectures. So you must be in every class and I would suggest taping the lectures for review at test time. Non-cumulative exams.
He is a really hard professor, he is never happy about anything, he is really hard when it comes to grading tests and essays. if you have the opportunity to take the class with another professor you should. he screams a lot and trows him self to the ground.
He is a nice guy but not a good teacher. He rushes through the material, you can barely write all the notes down. When people ask a question during the lecture he gets annoyed and says something smart. When he grades your paper he marks grammar errors but can't tell you what is grammatically wrong. I got A's in Eng. and was always marked off.
So this prof is really hilarious and awesome (and a sweetheart!). Hard grader, he talks really fast so it's hard to get everything down in notes, and when he throws himself and screams, its for a hilarious/dramatic effect. Previous guy in comments must have been butthurt. Fun class! Very attractive as well - could be distracting to us ladies ;)
Took Fall 2012. He's an active, dramatic, funny, knowledgeable lecturer. Use office hours for help; he lectures the whole time. He has study guides; STUDY EVERYTHING;dates/time periods. Take good class notes;what he says = the tests. Don't need book. He'll look @ rough draft papers. Put in effort/study & he will respect u. My favorite teacher ever.
Enthusiastic & entertaining. Makes learning fun. Map quiz the 2nd week in, and NO in class review, ever. He gives you a poor quality map and expects you to search the various places on your own. Grades VERY hard. Must pin point each location, or its marked wrong. If you are looking for an easy A, WRONG class. You'll be lucky to get by with a B.
He's a hard grader. If you are looking for an easy A, keep looking. Map quiz second week of semester, with NO in class review. Start studying pin point locations now. He is very passionate about his job and he will keep you entertained, but you really have to earn that grade. Good luck!
Fantastic teacher. He's clear in class, and is VERY engaging and fun to listen to. By far the most fun I've had in class. He has clear study guides and instructions for all the tests, and for the papers. He's very nice and helpful if you need it. He expects everyone to do their work, but if you pay attention, take notes, and study, you'll be fine.
Don't take him if you want to learn about the world. He focuses most of the class on the middle east. He's super into himself and how smart he thinks he is. Focuses a lot on battles and asks overspecific test questions. Two long, harshly graded essays, two map quizzes, and three exams. Don't take him.
Professor Ritt is a very good teacher, he is passionate about his subject and he gets excited about the topics a lot which makes him really engaging. The tests are not easy but not hard either if you pay attention, he grades very hard on essays but he allows rewrites so don't be discouraged if you have problems with essays. I recommend him highly.
Awesome teacher! Class isn't that hard as long as you study. There are two papers and he lets you re write both of them! The only book you have to read are the novels for the paper, which are pretty good reads as well. Fun and enthusiastic. Would definitely take him again.
I've taken Ritt a few times now and I'm always satisfied his class! I've learned so much. It is by no means an easy class, you're going to have to work hard. He treats his students like adults which makes it an enjoyable experience meaning you need to prep for tests on your own get questions on tests and papers.
He teaches a lot from his particular political standpoint and view. He harshly grades papers but is easy as far as exams and map quizzes go. He down right hates anything to do with Western Society and Religion. He will make fun of students and pick on them if they have a different viewpoint. If you are looking for a unbiased history class, not it.
Great Class I've taken Ritt a few times he's passionate about the material and presents it from a different point of view. The class is no gimmie you'll have to work but he makes himself more than available. 2 Quizzes 3 Exams 2 Papers. If you put in the time it's a simple class there 's usually extra credit, you have to work for the A.
Travis is a great guy with a sense of humor, and knows his history well. 3 exams 2 map quizzes and 2 papers. Grades harshly on papers, but allows papers. You have to show up to class and take good notes just pay attention take notes and utilize study guides. If I had to take him for any more classes I would. Travis is awesome and there to help
He is extremely hard when it comes to grading and there are very few assessments so it is basically impossible to catch up!! I went to class everyday, did all my work!! He is hard to understand. I liked history before now I'm avoiding it. TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER!
Travis is great, he is very animated, and as a result you get hypnotized listening to him; the class flies by. He explains the material as if it were happening to you personally, so it gets internalized real strong and clear. I feel stronger and more aware of the world around me because of this class. Reminds me of Mike Patton. GET EM' TRAVIS!
Hey was an extremely entertaining teacher. He was extremely clear what he wanted you to learn and he was always there to help whether it was office hours or emails. Tough class but I learned a lot and he was awesome. Definitely a grade you have to work for!
Travis is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are incredibly passionate and active, and he wants everyone to succeed. You'll need to work at a high level, but he will work with you to help you understand the material, and he allows rewrites. I learned so much from his classes, and I recommend them wholeheartedly! (Seriously, he rocks!)
YOU DO NOT NEED THE BOOK, all you have to do is show up and take GOOD specific notes. he is really good at explaining in detail if your confused you just have to ask, he is not a hard grader or teacher you just have to show up and take notes. his tests are based on lectures, the easiest way to pass is to print out the study guides for lectures.
Dr Ritt is energetic and knowledgeable - as someone who loves history, I truly enjoyed his lectures. He goes into detail and makes everything quite engaging. Map quizzes and tests are straightforward with study sheets - however, the two essays assigned during the semester were rather vague, and his grading criteria seemed arbitrary.
He doesnt use a whole lot of visuals or descriptive powerpoints. Your entire mass of info is coming straight from his VERY theatrical lectures. If you learn by listening you'll do fine in this class. But don't take him if you're the kind of person who need s visuals/detailed study guides. Doesnt provide enough resources and likes to hear himself.
Ritt is a horrible professor, he only teaches one way which is pure lecture slide show only has terms no definitions. Talks way too quick to even define all of the terms that he expects you to know. Study guides are useless just a list of over 150 terms per test. Rushes at the end of every class to get as much information in as possible.
Pretty easy class, no textbook required, lecture heavy. He is really energetic and passionate about what he is teaching. It is a very hard class to fall asleep in.
Ritt is a genuinely good guy who knows his stuff but one thing I don't like about his teach style is the dude talks way to fast, and his powerpoint aren't that useful. If he had them pre-formatted online that would help a lot, and let ur students know when u have verbal notes u want added so that they are actually useful. definitions would hlp also
Travis is one of the best teachers Ive ever had. Ive taken several of his classes and very much enjoyed them. He has PowerPoint slides but lectures are mainly him talking. The grade is based on only a few things to turn in. overall 10/10 def would recommend
Youre better off not taking his class. Hes very selfish, demands too much while giving a worthless study guide, asks extremely difficult exam questions and grades harshly. Plus hes always cramming the last 15 minutes of lecture.
His lectures are heavy but somewhat entertaining. Overall Professor quality is low due to his worthless study guide, which only touches base on a term which he asks something extremely specific about in the exam. Therefore, of the 150 terms given on the study guide make sure you know every detail of their past because his exam Qs are specific : F+
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are super energetic and it's impossible be uninterested. He really cares about his students and will go the extra mile for you. His lectures are a little fast paced but there's no reason you shouldn't at least pass. He offers a bunch of extra credit and essay rewrites.
This dude has few rules to go by and is super down to earth and chill yet at the same time very professional and informed of his topics, and his lectures are hilarious and easy to follow. Easy A when you put in a solid amount of effort.
Hes passionate, talks fast&everything comes from lecture so take quick notes! Hes scared to criticize a lot of things& said some problematic things- the Iraqi ppl never supported the war despite what Bush said& the Taliban & islam should not be used interchangeably! Other than that he was a good teacher.
As said in other comments, the book wasn't entirely necessary. Buy the book if you want more context for the topics covered, but the test material comes from the lectures. Out of all my professors, Dr. Ritt's lectures were the easiest to pay attention to and is one of the rare few that can be funny. Plenty of extra credit opportunity. A with effort
Professor Ritt is an amazing professor. I definitely recommend taking his class because you will learn a lot. You do have a decent amount of writing assignments which he doesn't grade easily, but if you read all the chapters and put a little effort into learning the history you will pass with an easy A or B.
I took Hist105 with Professor Ritt and it was probably one of the greatest experiences with online classes. The positive aspects I could say about this class are endless. 6 major grades - 3 tests and 3 papers. ZOOM lessons were recorded and uploaded for anyone to see if they missed a class. I would more than recommend Professor Ritt to anyone!
Homework was 3 papers, 4 discussions/responses, and a bunch of weekly LearningCurve quizzes (waste of time and $$). He is very picky with the papers and his feedback is ruthless if you dont share the same point of view as him. Lectures are not engaging. Only take his classes if available online otherwise I would hate to have him in person.
The class isn't all bad. Very few weekly assignments, but it is History, there is a TON of reading. Prof. Ritt is not what I consider helpful. If you don't use the same "Lens" he is looking for when turning in written assignments, he will drastically ding you. Even if the prompt didn't specify a "lens' to use. Aside from that, its an easy class.
If you want an easy class, choose a different professor. I took 108 during covid so it was online. He recorded all lectures so we could watch them again or in case we missed it. It was very helpful bc world history is not easy. He is very demanding. two books, two essays. Exams were not bad, open book. He always gave me good feedback.
Professor Ritt is an amazing instructor who really cares about his students. I prefer his live lectures online that have specific meeting times rather than prerecorded asynchronous courses. He is a very good story teller that always throws in a joke to keep us entertained. His papers are difficult but if you follow the prompt, you should do well.
Ritt is a good teacher, funny in class and joking sometimes. But, he's also a really tough grader. I'm on the spectrum, it was hard to see his perspective, so I got lower scores. If it weren't for extra credit, I might have failed. But he saw my efforts and rounded up. I'd recommend him for straight A students, but be prepared for hard work.
He critiques every single thing you write, nothing appears to be good enough.
Tough grader, but very understanding. I reached out to him bc of some mental health issues and he helped me out with my work. Much teachers don't give this opportunity so I appreciate his kindness. As long as you turn in your work and try you will at least get a B. Give him a try!
Dr. Ritt definitely expects a lot from his students, but so does every other professor. However, he has clear expectations of what he wants to see on assignments, delivers engaging lectures, and even gives you the opportunity to rewrite papers if they are turned in on time. Basically, he is willing to help if you are willing to make an effort.
His class was challenging but I loved it. Thankfully I took it online during covid so I could rewatch videos. Lots of reading. Long essays to write but he provides really good feedback! I was so worried bc English is my 2nd language but I got an A+. He is awesome
While Travis Ritt is known at Palomar to be an exceptional Professor however this class was by far one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He is not only an extremely harsh grader, but he also provides unhelpful feedback that always comes off as conceded. I'd strongly recommend finding another teacher if you're looking to take this class.
He is honestly one of my favorite teachers of all time. His lectures are super entertaining and informational. He also gives really good feedback on essays if you are looking to improve your writing. He responds fast and if you keep on track in regard to the lectures and books you will do great! Super funny as well!
I got an A in this class, however, it was challenging to do so. The class consists of weekly tests and assignments that aren't super hard, but the writing assignments and discussion posts are where you can get some points docked off. He is a harsh grader, but don't get discouraged, if you stick with it and listen to his advice you'll do well.
He is a heavy grader, which is crazy because his class announcements are worded so poorly. Left derogatory comments on my papers about my writing style, not the actual history subject. You're not an English professor friend! You also work at a college where many of your students have English as a 2nd language. Know your audience.
Greatest teacher ever! We love you, Travis, including your abundance of soccer jerseys. He wears a soccer jersey to every class. I was failing the class and was able to raise my grade to a B because he was willing to work with me. He is an awesome guy and very passionate about the class material. The only thing is you have to read The Diligent.
Insanely tough grader. There's only one right answer, and he will not hesitate to let you know how wrong you are. First class I have not received an A in, coming from an engineering student. Doesn't teach or provide material to understand the concepts, just assigns a ridiculous amount of textbook readings and pre-made quizzes from a third-party.
His class isn't so bad, it's just a lot of writing. What I can say is that if you have a personal problem and explain it to him he will understand and help you along the way. Overall, he is a tough grader, especially with the papers which I never got an A on but I was still able to pass with an A. If I can do it, so can you! :)
Professor Ritt is the best professor I've had yet. He obviously has a passion for history that reflects so much in his teaching style. He can be a tough grader but if you go to class and do the work it's impossible to fail this class. For reference I'm a highschool sophomore and not highly intelligent, yet I was able to pass this class with a B.
Very generous on the grading with lots of extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. He also grants you the ability to rewrite all your essays. The tests are very easy if you take good notes, which you are allowed to use during the exams. I got 100 on every exam just by writing down everything he talked about in the study guide.
Unclear instructions on written assignments that seem like they are up to your interpretation, but you get points off if you don't answer how he would answer. Be prepared for lots of reading old articles that are hard to follow. The assignments given on the textbook site however are very helpful and straightforward, which was a plus.
Professor Ritt is an amazing teacher. I seriously recommend taking his history class if you get the chance. He gives you pretty much every opportunity to do well in his class and then some. If you study the minimum amount and manage to complete everything on time, this is one of the easiest classes to pass. 10/10, would take again.
I loved having him as a professor though the class is slightly difficult due to only having a 5 assignments for the whole semester, he was extremely enjoyable to listen too everyday. His lecture were not only super informative but also really enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend taking one of his classes.
He is a hard grader, but when and if you reach out he is there to help you. He will give you meaningful feedback on you papers and my writing skills grew taking this corse. His lectures (even though they were online) were really interactive and comedic at times! Highly recommend this course, he will prepare you for 4 year college expectations.

I really enjoyed Dr. Ritt's world history class earlier this semester. As others say, his feedback may be harsh by some people's standards, but he will absolutely help you grow in your writing skills. When answering discussions and essays, stay perfectly on track and make sure your claims are 100% supported by the sources and textbook.
Nice guy who knows his passionate about his subjects and he's got a good sense of humor, but he's extremely condescending and his feedback is pretty much useless when he says things like “this is not about political correctness” or other useless comment that doesn't give you any constructive feedback on how to improve a paper that you wrote
I felt like I couldn't get anything right. In every writing assignment and every discussion board, there was something new that I was doing wrong that didn't even seem like it was worth taking 20 points off of my assignment. I did my best to apply the corrections he was giving me, and every time I fixed one it seemed I did something else wrong.
he is very unclear about what he actually expects. his feedback and comments come off rude, condescending, and extremely unhelpful. he is super nitpicky about everything, and there will always be something that he finds you did wrong, no matter how hard you work to get it right.
This man never responds to emails, it's like im trying to reach out to a celebrity. Would recommend if you want that 0.00 GPA.
I took his 107 and 108 online history class. Unfortunately he never teaches - the class consists of reading either one or two units a week and writing a short paper. I found his grading of papers to be inconsistent - although in taking a second class of his I realized that he seems to grade easier if you write about race relations/communism.
HIST 108: Professor Ritt is a good teacher, but I will have to say that he grades more on writing/vocab than anything else. As a 4.0 student, I almost got my first B from this class. That speaks volume. I am a strong writer yet he degraded me for using vocab that he didn't like. Be very vague with what you write, and you have to purchase a textbook
