Travis was 1 of 3 prof. teaching the course, and the best.Intersting, great lectures- sites simpsons and seinfeld for examples.Go to lecture and do the readings, and you'll pass his test easily. !!He shows a video on Neuroscince you cant make up or find!!
He goes a little fast, however his lectures can still be easly understood and enjoyed.
THIS MAN IS HILARIOUS! Seinfeld played in class! The classes were interesting and entertaining! The material was a little challenging, but easy to get into with this professor.
my favorite of the three. very intresting and experianced lecturer who keeps the subject intresting with good examples
The best teacher in this course. He taught the most difficult subject (in my opinion) but by great use of examples made it understandable. Surprisingly, it was his exam I did the best on! Also, I went to his office hours and he was VERY helpful.
Lectures were pretty interesting. The test was mostly from his lectures.
Best teacher out of all three by far! He is hilarious and really makes you understand the material
his lectures with power point were very interesting, however, the subject was harder than the other two professors.
Travis was my favorite out of the three psyc 1 teachers. I loved his lectures and he was a great teacher.
I had the pleasure of working with Travis for Field Study and took his class Lying & Deception. He is extremely bright and manages to effectively lead all discussions in a casual manner. He can grade hard but is funny and easy to approach.
Travis is great! He really holds your attention throughout his lectures. He's funny, and he uses excellent supplemental material. One bad thing - in 130B some of the exam questions were poorly written, and he didn't throw them out even when 92% of the class got them wrong due to semantics.
His lectures are clear, and he has a good sense of humor. His test can be hard if you don't read and pay attention to the reading. He tests from both the reading and the lectures, but mostly from the reading. He is really helpful during tests if you ask him questions, and he will curve the tests.
Travis is an excellent professor. He keeps you interested with humor and supplemental materials. However, in 130B, his midterms were extremely difficult and a lot of people got really frustrated. Be prepared to do a ton of studying and figure out some way to conceptualize every line of text read.
lying and deception was an excellant class..dont know if he still teaches it but would highly recommend.. he is an anal retentive grader who is true to his "email me your essay by 10 pm" types.... his stuff is difficult... but dont let that discourage you.... he is down to explain
I loved Travis' examples, getting to figure out how or if a classmate was lying was great practice for the real world. I really enjoyed the readings for this class too. Good, good , good.
He was a really great teacher. The way he taught really catches your attention. I wish I could've said the same about the other teachers that taught Psych 1 with him =/
Is everyone who gave this man great rating on CRACK? The reading load was insane - all primary sources and dense, and the tests made people cry! Seymour would be a great teacher if he "streamlined" the material. Lie detection is a great subject, but he makes the class too hard to be worth it, unfortunately! Ye' Be Warned!
interesting lectures. brutal readings. tests? you think you know hard? these tests are near to impossible. the poster who suggested streamlining is right on the money. i hope you liked research methods, 'cuz that's what this class is all about, only harder. great guy, just don't fall for it hook line and sinker. he's out for blood.
Fantastic prof! He's the kind that can turn a dry, difficult class into something very fun and memorable. He spends as much time as you want in his office hours, too.
This guy is great! Class was funny and engaging. No final for this class and no midterms. Just quizzes after going over new sections. No textbook needed and used a great Course packet that he put together. Attendance not mandatory but helpful. He teaching is more learning by doing. If you have to take Research Methods, take it with him!!
His tests are ridiculous! Not at all a fair assessment of the material. The readings are super dense and he holds you accountable for minute details. With all that said I still can't but help the guy. He's actually pretty amazing but his classes are not easy.
Everyone else is right on track!! He is a great prof and obviously very smart but his tests are RIDICULOUS! Make sure 2 know the study guide front 2 back and even then ur bound 2 miss a few. I got a B+, but that was with 15+ hrs of studying for the midterm. Do the readings ask a lot of ?'s (despite the difficulty hes very helpful) & dont miss class
Ugh, do not take Cognitive Psych from Seymour if you can avoid it. He's a nice guy, but he really bored me. This class was just a bunch of theories. We didn't really learn about the brain and its structures at all. His study guides were terrible, and the so-called "quizzes" are real midterms with 50 extremely difficult multiple choice questions.
He's a great teacher! Keeps things interresting even though all his lectures are powerpoints. He's hilarious and very knowledgeable on the subject. His tests are rediculously hard though. Expect to study ALOT! Go to his office hours.
Great professor! He is very knowledgeable and keeps lectures interesting and funny. His midterms really are not that hard as long as you read and study a little bit.
horrible. cant tell an honest person from a liar though he teaches a class on lying. has a "cool dude" persona in front of class like lecture is his personal comedy stage, but trust me hes a jerk in real life. avoid him at all costs and save yourself a headache.
This professor is not easy when i took his class in fall he gave to much reading to do. Fall quarter was hard because by the end he went through all 16 chapter of the book. i mean he is a good professor but in a week went through 4 chapter which i thought it was insanely hard.
Seymour is a pretty good professor. His lectures are either a hit or miss. The exams are pretty hard, but you just have to study a lot. I met with him about an essay I turned in (got a bad grade on it) and he really helped me out. He's a cool guy. I would recommend him as long as you're okay with loads of studying.
Seymour was pretty boring. Going to lecture was kind of pointless to me also, since it was everything from the book. His test was a bit hard, but doable as long as you study ALOT. Otherwise, its "eh".
Great professor! He taught the cognitive psychology segment of PSYC 01. The subject material was difficult and involved a lot of concepts from other areas of science (bio, neuroscience, etc) but Seymour did his best to explain everything and answer all student questions. Definitely go to section and study for his part of the course.
Great personality! Very easy to understand. Uses concrete examples. Just the right amount of humor. Very comfortable and easy on the ears. Just a great guy overall!
Great psychology teacher - taking him again. Decent amount of work, nothing too bad, he obviously cares about his stuff
He taught the cognitive segment of psych 1, overall really good professor. Make sure to stay on top of reading and review material regularly. Midterm is pretty straightforward.
Seymour taught the cognitive section of psych 1. He seems like a nice guy but it was boring and the exam was very difficult.
He was a great professor. Make sure to stay on top of the reading and review material constantly. His exam was the most difficult out of the rest of the instructors.
Travis a great teacher, hes even cool if you call him Travis. But by no means is this an easy class. I easily spent 20 or 30 hours studying for his tests. They're hard. But thats life, this is college. 20 is a weening class, it'll test your ability. Travis tho is a great guy, I'd recommend him, but you have to take this class seriously
Travis is a cool, approachable guy with a good sense of humor, and can make class fun. But he can do things that make the class kind of a joke (he made us write haikus instead of an essay). For some students that may be a good thing, but personally I like to be graded (and think I'd do better) on an actual essay and not my ability to write poems.
Travis is a funny and caring professor. He has done amazing research in the field of deception and the class was really interesting, you learn a lot through many different mediums, such as films and creative writing. I really enjoyed his class and ability to cater to multiple styles of learning.
Lying and deception was a cool class but this is an area of expertise for him so be prepared to have very detailed exams. He jokes around a lot and keeps class light and fun so when the tests are challenging you are a little thrown off. Luckily there are a few easily graded papers that help bump up your grade; that saved me.
Make sure when you take notes in class that you mainly focus on what he says, will help you on weekly quizzes; look away from the projector if you have to. 2 essays, 1 midterm, 1 non-cumulative final, loves Star Wars, is clear and very approachable (also lots of videos or movies in class).
Great teacher, funny guy BUT he is very nit-picky. Look out for every researcher, every experiment that was briefly mentioned in lecture to be on the exam. Definitely attend every lecture and read every chapter and then the class will be a breeze. 1 easy essay and then 1 alternative essay.
Great lecturer. But the tests were way harder than I thought. He expects you to remember every single experiment he mentioned in class, and uses them to test you on exams.
Travis is a caring and funny dude, but I did not like this class. Lectures were difficult to follow and his Powerpoints lacked a sense of organization/consistency. Felt like a rambling thought stream at times. His exams also ask about trivial aspects of experiments that were hardly mentioned in class. He doesn't give a study guide either.
Travis is a great guy and he means really well at heart. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you won't pass. Lecture heavy, reading heavy (not an extreme amount, but dense readings) no study guide. You are VERY lost when studying for his exams and his tests are difficult and no curves. If you're taking this class, get prepared to get confused.
Seymour is a nice guy but as a prof, I did not like him at all. His TAs don't know what to really help with bc he doesn't tell them anything, his lecture slides are messy, he goes off on tangents, and he doesn't hand out study guides. His tests are 70% old psyc studies, but he only puts in tiny, random details. Reading only slightly helps.
As a person, Travis is awesome. As a professor, get ready to work. 40/50 of exam questions are lecture material, textbook case studies are mentioned maybe 5-10 on exams. 2 essays, 15 percent each, will help to float your grade. Cool to talk to in office hours but goes on tangents a lot. Extra credit research is 3.5 percent. No study guides. Ever.
His tests are lecture heavy and require a lot of reading (pretty much read all the cases he talks about). Nice guy but he's a meh teacher. He likes to go on tangents and basically end up talking about useless things. His TAs don't know anything so they aren't really helpful.
Professor Seymour is a great Professor. I took intro to Cognitive Psychology with him. His lectures are very important to his midterms and final. The book is important to read as well however it will be just the basics from the book. KNOW THE EXPERIMENTS from his lecture. 85% of his exams are on it. No homework is given and he is a funny dude!
If you want easy, swap classes. If you want competent, take Seymour's class. Had him for a couple of cog-sci courses: Python programming and Learning & Memory. He knows his stuff very well, and is capable of relaying dense content through a fun lecture. Take his classes seriously though, he won't coddle you.
He is a good lecturer, and most of his exam questions reflect lecture materials. However, he is too strict in enforcing deadlines without consideration to outstanding circumstances. Nonetheless, he is a nice professor overall.
Professor Seymour was great! Hes passionate about Cog Sci and presents great examples for what he is teaching. Lecture and section are not required and he also does not give study guides. So, your success in this class is entirely up to you. His tests are straightforward, just make sure to look over lecture slides.
This man has zero concept of care and compassion during the middle of a pandemic. Instead of realizing that there are people who are genuinely struggling to do online classes during the Pandemic, he's decided that we're all at home being lazy and have all the time in the world to do some of the most random, arduous, and ridiculous work he could find
He has no respect or empathy for the fact that we are in the midst of a global pandemic. Slides are pitiful. Moves too fast through lectures despite being asked to slow down. He expects that we remember every detail from his lectures for exams, yet does not record lectures. No sections. Also assigns extensive reading however does not test on it
Make sure you listen to his lectures, because he won't record them and his tests are based on his lectures.(This is during quarantine.) There were also these 2 questions on the test that were on the slides. BUT, the slide in class didn't match the one he uploaded so I ended up getting those questions wrong. (The slide from class was wrong.)
Travis is very passionate in teaching. He takes his time in class to answer questions students may have. The class consists of weekly quizzes (1-2), 3 midterms and 1 cumulative final. The quizzes are set up so that you can get 100% easily. Midterms are lecture based so make sure you listen. Everything is pretty straightforward. Just study.
Clearly passionate about the class, but is very unclear about what is required. Additionally, the class is disorganized and he doesn't make good on his promises, just about little things that he promises he'll post. Very harsh grader but no rubric given, doesn't put a ton of effort in. Seems like a nice guy, not a great prof.
The textbook for the class isn't even finished! Very unclear in criteria and a super slow grader, don't expect to get grades for papers back until the end of the quarter. Even his feedback is full of spelling and grammatical errors, don't take this guy.
He deliberately misinterprets what you say to give the most uncharitable possible grade. I don't know if he doesn't like me in particular for some reason or he's like this with all students but AVOID THIS PROF. He will screw you over!
Very unclear!!! This man doesn't specify what's needed for a good grade, then punishes students. His specifications are seemingly random, do not take this prof for summer or any other class. Wish I had dropped this class before the deadline :(
Unreliable and doesn't make good on his promises, don' t take this professor. Clearly only at UCSC for research, he needs to re-examine how he teaches if he actually wants to make any impact. Might be good for lower-div classes, don't take 139D with him.
Honestly this class is not worth the increased cortisol, if you can take other courses that satisfy your course requirements definitely do so. He grades so unnecessarily harsh on grammar rather than your understanding of what he's teaching. My bad, didn't realize I was taking a Lit class. Midterms are super unclear and textbook is incomplete.
Travis was not a good professor. He was way too harsh on grading and he took lots of points off for things he either didn't teach or him just being nit picky. And the deadlines were way too close to the date it was assigned. His comments on our code was unhelpful and he just sucked all around. Lectures not helpful. No resources on canvas. HORRIBLE!
Travis does not care about his students' success. He does anything to lower the class average grade and he is rarely available for help. He is not helpful in office hours and you will be constantly confused as to what gets you a good grade. He is unclear and will do anything to fail you. The content is doable, but not because of him. DO NOT TAKE!!
Doesn't record lectures, extremely harsh grader with very unclear prompts, the textbook is not complete but is heavily relied on, would not recommend taking for upper-divs.
This class was pretty hard. We had one assignment and one project each week, but we got to drop some. Overall, there was a lot of work, but that's to be expected for any programming class. Travis was pretty funny though and I didn't have many issues with the class besides the fact that he didn't record the lectures.
I dont have anything nice to say about this professor so I will leave it at this.... AVOID him.
Not accommodating or willing to work with students. Wants copycats of his work. This class has made me unnecessarily anxious and I am completely turned off from his field of study. He grades like engineering without as much clarity. You will not improve as a researcher through his class. Copy and paste from lectures and look up his papers for B/A.
Be ready to read!! You have 3 midterms and a final expects you to understand and memorize all the things he talks about without a study guide. Has TA are helpful but can only do so much.
Do not take his class! He's seems like a cool guy but as a professor, its completely different. Insane amount of reading, a midterm every 2wks, no curve, no extra credit, no cheatsheets of any kind, or no study guides. If you have a hard time remembering a ton of info this isn't for you. If you want to be stress free pick a different professor!!
Seems like a cool person who has interesting ideas and stories but as a professor he was not good. Was very test heavy (every 2 weeks that cover 4-5 chapters). Skipping readings is not an option!! If you are good at remembering material well then it should not be that bad. However there is no extra credit or study guide Be prepared to be STRESSED!!
He's a super nice guy and his lectures are interesting, but the tests are way too hard. The tests don't cover material from the textbook and are very confusing. I wouldn't take this class unless it's mandatory for your major.
The professor that is quite a chill person, but unnecessarily difficult. Lectures were extremely off topic. The first 2 midterms basically determined you entire class grade. No extra credit, no curve. Some of exam questions would be very detailed, so be prepared to read a lot.
professor seymour seemed like a really cool person at first, but his class ended up being super hard. there were three midterms, each two weeks apart that covered five to six chapters of the textbook. not to mention that the midterms only covered things talked about in the lecture. do not take this teacher :(
I liked Travis. Tests were difficult but he was a super personable guy that you could tell was very passionate and knowledgeable about his subjects. Would recommend.
We had 3 midterms throughout the quarter, one of which covered 5 chapters. He gives no study guides, and each test was supposedly 75% lecture material, and yet the tests would have material that was not said in lecture, nor could be found anywhere in the book. He's charismatic but this class is difficult beyond the point of being reasonable.
Did not record lectures even if you have DRC accommodations. Be ready to teach yourself all of the material because the lectures were confusing. He posts slides after class but deletes important the slides with imporant material for tests. You have to buy/rent the textbook.
His lectures were good but he did get distracted but those distractions were funny and interesting. His exams were open note and he dropped the lowest exam and quiz grade. Overall I would take again.
I don't understand all of the low ratings for Prof Seymour. His class was interesting, his slides were well formatted, the discussion sections were helpful, and there weren't too many tests. He tends to go on tangents but they are all pretty interesting. Worth taking the class just for his Geon song.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH PROFESSOR SEYMOUR
Took this class during summer. Much easier than expected. If you did the work you got the grade. I don't think he graded too hard but then again I took the class during summer, maybe he was easier just for us?
Travis Seymour is a very engaging lecturer. PSYC 20 is already covers interesting topics, but he elevates it. His Geon song is legendary and he tells very fun to listen to stories. Lectures were in person, but the tests were online and open book. He seemed to be experimenting with online tests, so that might not stay. I would definitely recommend.
Prof Seymour is a very kind and personable guy but I would never take his class again. He had basic anatomy of the brain incorrect in his slideshow and did not notice. Also if you have DRC accommodations do not expect to get recorded lectures because he never posts them.
Professor Seymour was a nice and fun guy. You could keep retaking quizzes to get 100 on them, so you can get full points on them. Test heavy but 1/3 midterms get dropped. TA's were nice but it didn't seem like anybody wanted to be there. Tests were online and open note, just take notes in class and you'll probably be ok.
Lectures were interesting enough, but you definitely need to go to class since his exams sometimes do consist of in-class examples. The rest are from the book, which is on Inquisitive--and is definitely not very engaging--especially seeing as how he doesn't talk about the book at all in class. He tends to go off topic sometimes. Lame dad jokes.
Although this class was easy, Professor Seymour made it harder than necessary. He is a funny and kind professor, but he gets lost in lectures and tends to change his mind about the course frequently. The tests and homework were easy, but his opinions on psychology in general were controversial and almost concerning. He's fun and easy but confusing
Travis is a cool guy and an average professor. You can tell that he really does love cognitive psych, as he tends to go on tangents during lecture and lose track of what he is doing. Nonetheless, the class itself is not made to be difficult, and Travis does a great job of keeping us on track in terms of homework and lectures.
Dr. Seymour is a very approachable and caring professor. During the final I gave all I could before walking out with an incomplete exam. (Should've gone to more office hours.) He came outside to encourage me to try looking at the test one more time. Even though I was so embarrassed, his compassion and effort really stuck with me.
He's nice, but I agree w/ other people that he makes the class a bit harder than he should. He doesn't like to offer study guides or post answer keys but is test-heavy. He's almost never available for office hours, won't post lecture recordings, and his bar for an A and an A+ is higher than the default grading scale. He's very nice, though.
A charismatic guy, who is relatively captivating in lectures. BUT two midterms and a final were 90% of the grade. Tests are much harder than the lectures let on, book also sucked and he said himself he wants a different one. Class average on exams was a D and despite a very upset class, he refused to curve or give any study material/advise.
Passionate but extremely tough grader. Only two midterms and a final determine your grade, all lecture-based. He goes on tangents, changes what's on the exam last minute, and refuses to curve or give study guides. For your GPA and sanity, avoid this class.
Nitpicks essays and often seems to misinterpret your work. Expectations are demanding yet unclear, and he remains unreceptive to feedback even as students struggle. Tangents derail lectures. Overall unpleasant—the only psych professor I've had a negative experience with at UCSC. Unless the subject is your true passion, protect your GPA.
I recently took my first exam, and many of the questions were definitely not as hard as people were saying. If you study using mind maps and go to his office hours, you will do great on the exams! The downside is that he doesn't explain what chapters will be on the test, and has only 3 tests and nothing else.
Awful professor genuinely so frustrated taking this class, definitely go to class (lecture specific info will be on the exam, and not in textbook). Textbook is the best way to learn concepts. Refuses to give extra resources, practice problems or exams, first exam this quarter class average was a 68% (prof didn't care and didn't see an issue)
Professor is kind and clearly passionate about the subject, but severely overcomplicates course. Grade was made up of 3 tests (30% each) and 10% section attendance. Offers no guidance or helpful slides… for a learning and memory course. Unique circumstances caused 2/3 tests to be moved online, class would be impossible to pass if not. Do not take.
I would rather be dragged by a semi truck for 100 miles on an unpaved road face down than ever take a class from this professor again. Only graded by 3 exams (all 30% of your grade), and lectures are almost entirely unrelated to test material. He failed more than half the class and refused to curve the grade at all. Truly the worse teacher at UCSC.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Grades are based on 2 midterm and a final (section attendance as well) Our first midterm class average was a 69 and seymour refused to curve it because "it's not a failing grade." News flash, it is. This is the first ever C I have received at UCSC and If I have him again, I might go into a psych ward. I'm serious.
To be successful you have to become his minion. Talks a lot about his connections and likes to flaunt his knowledge; goes off on emotionally charged outbursts and tangents; does not fear repercussions, because he has tenure. Likes to talk about Star Wars and compares power structures to “the Empire”, but acts like an officer would in such a regime.
Uninspiring lectures full of tangents, loves to hear himself talk. Assigns dense readings and expects you to know them despite often being confused himself. Don't take this course concurrent to other reading heavy courses because it will cause interference and mental fatigue. Grades like he is a journal you're submitting an article to. Frustrating.
