One of the best instructors I've had, ever. Does tend to get a little too excited about the topic sometimes, but better that than too boring. Ready to help with questions and generally easygoing. Fresh out of grad school as of Spring 05.
Awesome instructor, he made history fun and easy to learn.
All his points come from tests and one paper. He uses powerpoint presentations in his lectures and it helps because it makes it structured and he injects humor from time to time in his slides. A good class if you are just looking for a decent grade without going to in depth because History 17A is a survey course.
I think he makes it more interesting then alot of teachers do. he reminds me of mr. z at wheatland, at the fact that i learn in his class
This instructor is awesome!! Although he just started teaching at Yuba last sememster, he is a excellent teacher. I loved his sense of humor and laid back attitude. He turned a very intimidating class into a fun and educational one.
Still does a great job. Has generally liberal views but doesn't ridicule those who disagree and, in fact, invites discussion. His perhaps excessive excitment of last semester has been tempered a bit with time and if anything he's better this time around. (He is more practiced, obviously, as well.)
He is such a great teacher and really knows his history...will help with anything you need. His tests are not that hard as long as you study...the only part that sucked was having to write this long term paper on this huge book. Make sure you sit up close...he won't call on you but it helps with taking notes.
Hated history until I took it with Travis Smith. Best history teacher ever. Puts the lecure notes up on slide show. The class moves so fast it is incredible. A 50 minute class seems like it is 20 minutes. Seriously! Excited to be there one hell of a teacher. Pretty good at basketball too.
great teacher. tests are not that bad. I did great on the essay part. the only thing I hated about this class was the paper, I don't mind a paper but it was on the life of Frederick Douglas. I feel like I have had to write on this book like a thousand times. other wise it was a great class.
I could not have LOVED Mr. Smith more. He is probably my favorite teacher of all time. I wasn't interested in history before I took his class, but now I totally get it and enjoy it. He is just awesome at what he does. I wish he was my instructor for every course. I LOVE HIM!
He went WAY too fast and I never got to write any notes. The Essay at the end was horrible too. This class brought my gpa way down.
EXCELLENT CLASS! Very clear lectures, challenging course yet fair grading, and interesting information. I look forward to taking 17A in the future.
im sorry, but half of the things on the tests are not in the lecture or in the book. if you take his class- take notes on literally everything- even things that dont sound important because chances are they will show up on the tests.
I learned so much it is incredible. I love Mr. Smith. He knows what he is talking about. Such an interesting lecturer.
Alot of taking notes, which you need to succeed in the class. No homework, just 1 short paper and a few test. Nice guy.
I recorded the lectures, because he talks very fast. Use the study guides he provides for you, and go to class. I never read the text, only the other two small books that were assigned.
Mr.Smith is a very nice teacher, and also very good at teaching. He is my favorite teacher. His lectures are very clear and his way of speaking is very tremendous and attractive.I really loved him.
For the first time in my life I had such a nice teacher.I always like to attend his lecture. He is the Perfect teacher. He really knows the history. His teaching method is very good.
He's a good teacher and a nice guy, the tests aren't hard if you take good notes and study, but the essay tests can be difficult if you're not too good at writing. He does tend to share his leftist political views in class, and spent the same amount of time talking about Marcus Garvy as he did WWII which was odd, but he's overall a pleasant person.
well first off hes hot. very nice to look at while lecturing. plus, he's a very good lecturer and throws some humor in the mix a lot. his multiple choice test questions are exactly from lectures and barely from the book. his essays are a bit difficult and he grades kind of hard on those, but the hotness makes up for it.
not entirely impressed. i had a love for history prior to his class, and he has slowly sucked all fun from the subject. he requires a devastating command of the material that i think is quite unrealistic. putting his ridiculous expectations in the syllabus doesn't make it ok either. overall, I'm VERY disappointed by the Yuba history department.
Professor Smith is a great professor. His lecture material is very well organized. Also the way he explains every powerpoint slide is very helpful for the class tests.
Prof Smith,he is a good teacher. His lectures are well organised, you dp have to attend everyday otherwise it will be hard to follow thru. Word of advice; print his lecture giude on web ct and follow it through and make notes during lecture. You will get an easy "A" on multiple choice. Blue Book essay can be tough. Write it out n memorize it.
He is very passionate about History. His lectures are fun to listen to because he breathes life into them. If you want to have fun with history, take his class. Heavy on the tests though.
Excellent teacher makes lectuer fun and intersting goes on a tangent every once in a while but is deff. a professor you want to take if you have the chance
He was an ok teacher, but he seriously leans way far to the left. He basically teaches material as if liberal views on the world are the only way to view things. So, expect to have to write a bunch of BS liberal essays regurgitating his political beliefs if you want an A.
very nice professor. he really knows his stuff. you just have to memorize way too much for his exams.
Don't get distracted by his looks. Makes history interesting.
Travis is very interesting to listen to. His exams are all based on lecture so don't miss class. He also gives a quiz every week on the reading material and textbook. I did very well on the exams but the quizes seemed to always have a couple of questions that were obscure and not a main point of the chapter.
I've taken 17A & B with Smith. He's a good teacher. Passionate about his stance. Lays his opinion on think but good at displaying opposite opinions. You can pass without the book. Write down what he says, or record it and write it under the bullet points of his lecture slides. Tutor with RON MOORE, review notes often & get an A. Easy on the eyes bt
Very good prof. A bit liberal but if that doesn't bother you then you should be fine. Very very helpful if you seek it. Def will help you and wants all of his students to do well. will need to go to class and read the book. Makes the class interesting and he Is very very nice to look at. I would have to say hottest male teacher at Yuba College.
Great looking guy, very passionate about history, not the best teacher. His tests are WAY too hard yet his lectures are too fast and not clear enough. He talks too fast sometimes, puts like one word on the power point slideshow and expects you to write notes based off that one word. Not the most enjoyable class...
I printed out all slides & took detailed notes on all lectures, even on non-relevant items. I aced all the lecture tests. I read the textbook (all 400 pgs) and got A/B's on txtbk quizzes. Massive amts of writing as you have to prepare 12 essays even though only 4 are graded. Excellent class overall - I appreciate his passion in teaching.
Prof. Smith is extremely knowledgeable, articulate, and passionate about the subject material. Engaging and thought-provoking lecturer. Thoughtfully addresses students' questions/concerns. Very enjoyable class. Smith remains my absolute favorite professor at Yuba.
Not only is he a hottie, but his class was super easy. 1 test online a week and 4 essay tests for the semester. TAKE IT.
Very helpful. If you have a question or need to e-mail you he will get back to you ASAP and is almost too lenient. Highly knowledgeable and tries to throw some humor in there to keep it interesting but you end up laughing at him because it's dorky stuff. Never judges you, extremely humble and interesting. quiz every week & three essays & 3 exams
Good teacher. Passionate and keeps everything interesting. You need to read from the book for this class or you will not do good. Make sure you know the material for the in class essays(he has a teachers assistant grade them). Other than that, very good teacher. Highly enjoyed his class.
Amazing teacher! Professor Smith is really easy to talk to and really approachable. He does demand a lot effort if you want to get a high grade. Although, you can easily get a C without much effort. Quizzes are online and answers come straight from the book. Tests are in class and based off lectures. Attendance is not required, but no late students
Smith is an awesome professor! I would recommend him to anyone. Very knowledgeable and funny. He tells it like it is. There is a lot of effort required for his classes but its worth it to learn from him.
Terrible. He is nice and knows what he is talking about, but the way he runs this community college pre requisite class is ridiculous. This class is ran at a university level (he has a PhD) and he does not take into consideration that the history class he is teaching is mandatory for graduation. Way too much work for 3 units. I have had better.
This class is a lot of work, however if you put in the effort, this may mean tutoring as well, you will pass. I feel empowered to be a more informed citizen after leaving this class. He keeps it real. I find him credible in and out of class, very nice person.
He is a really good professor and is very clear about what to expect from the class. He is really interesting and makes lectures fun. I would take his class in a heartbeat!
Not a tough class. The lectures seem kind of long, but they aren't boring. Tests were taken in class in the form of an essay. Ended the semester with a high B, and he bumped it up to an A. It was a good class and I would take another class with this professor.
I took his 17A class as a lecture and received a B. I was not interested at 10 am to learn about history. I took his online 17B class and got an A. Liked the online class much better. He always answered any questions I had via email. 3 essay exams, weekly chapter quizzes, another essay, another quiz on a book, and weekly discussions for 17B online.
Dr. Smith is a great motiv. speaker, and you may be enthusiastic after a few of his lectures, such was I. He loves history of course and will teach the best parts, and ask you to read the rest of the boring book yourself; there is a chapter quiz every Tuesday on the smallest details (first 2 easy). If you are 5 min. late, he will ask you to leave
He has you get a small thick book where you read a chapter every 6-7 days. The quizzes are 25 questions multiple choice but he really focuses on names, dates and events. the exams include an essay 100 pts, short answer on a document you have to remember who wrote it and when & what does it mean. Multiple choice is hard. The whole thing is hard.
Amazing teacher, great lectures with easy tests if you show up for lecture. I would strongly recommend this class. Just an overall super cool guy
He takes his job way too seriously. This is a history class not some high leveled mathscience class. He grades very hard on the writing portion of exams. Less than 5 people probably get an A throughout the year.
One of the worst of worst professors i've ever had.
I enjoyed Mr. Smith. I thought he gave VERY well in-depth lectures. He is liberal, but he gives you a great alternative perspective at our nation's history. I recommend his class and I have felt that I have learned a lot. Just be sure to engage yourself in the class, do your homework and study. You do that, you will more than likely pass the class.
good overall
I took Smith for HIST17B and I really enjoyed his class! He was a tough teacher but truly wanted to see you do well in the class! Very happy and funny!
Great person with good personality. He helps if you ask. Uses big words and talks 2 hours straight. Exams are tough and the books he chooses is about 50 pgs per chapter for every h.w. quizes taken online and timed. Wants you to make an essay during exam about a question he puts in, in about 45 minutes. Think twice before getting a full load. . .
Informative and definitely interesting this professor is amaZing! He knows his material and presents it well without being boring! I reccomend everyone take him if you take college seriously, I learned a lot from this knowledgable professor.
Amazing instructor! His lectures were clear and easy to understand as long as you pay attention. Do not miss class and be sure to keep up with the weekly reading assignments. Preparing for tests will require a good amount of study time so don't get lazy. I would take this teacher again even if I didn't need the credit.
He was really easy to listen to, and look at. Other than the slammin body, his class was actually interesting and I did learn a lot.
Class online, be sure to do all of your quizzes and posts, there are 6 essays and a 4 page paper throughout.
I took 17A online & 17B on campus at the same time! His lectures are long but interesting... and he's pretty cute! (: He's very helpful & always suggests his students to talk to him if they have any questions. There is a lot of reading, but I managed to get B's in both classes. Study, attend class, & keep up with the readings and you'll be fine.
Took his online class over the summer. Professor is extremely liberal, seems that all the documents he had us read were to try to convert us to be liberals. Believe there is better teachers who will actually teach history at Yuba. Don't recommend taking him unless he is your only option.
This was an extremely demanding summer class. To give you an idea, the last week is a short week. There were four essays due on the last week. This was on top of the usual Online discussions and quizzes. The discussions were mini-essays which sometimes required extensive reading. The grading rubric on the essay were also unclear.
Man, this was a cool class. Lectures were interesting and the assignments made me think. Challenging but when I got to Sac State I was definitely prepared.
Great Professor, would take again in a heartbeat.
Had him for both history 17A and 17B. He's a great professor and is willing to help and answer questions but will not just hand you the answers. Which is good. I would definitely recommend this professor!
Professor Smith is passionate about history and I think that makes for a great professor! Honestly, this class was more challenging than I thought it would be due to so much reading (about 50-75 pages/week). Seven essays through the entire semester, however, I have heard if you take in class you only have to do four. Great guy.
overall a great teacher
I took 17a online; there is a lot of papers to do but when you read the books and do the work, this class is worth the experience because I have never learned so much about history from all my years of schooling from elementary until now.
I took 17a online; there are a lot of papers to do but once you read the book and do the work, then the class is worth the experience. I have never learned so much about history from all my schooling from elementary to until now.
17A online, prof is pretty arrogant, but the class is SUPER easy. His aide did most of his grading, and he was so-so. Overall such an easy class, I would take it online for sure.
His class sounds horrible but it's just a lot of homework and essays. All the stuff is pretty easy just a lot of stuff to do, but gives you plenty of time. Real cool down to earth teacher. Don't wait till the last minute to do your work or you will fall behind.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He could be rated 4 or 5. Dynamic speaker. Interesting lectures. Tough but fair. I deduct points purely on principle. While he is a great prof, he is a Marxist, plain and simple. He sounds very reasonable in his arguments, but when you get down to it, scary. Very persuasive as well. Don't take unless you're very left-minded.
I felt the lectures could have been more interactive, including more videos of historical events.
Nice person. Great lectures. Tough exams.
Professor Smith's class was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. I wish I would have taken him for 17A prior so I could have had him twice. Really nice, understanding guy, clear communication and easy to get a hold of too. His lectures were amazing and attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't attend you won't have the lecture materials.
He expects a lot from the students exams. He also grades hard. He wants a full essay on the exam, wants you to analyze a quote, plus answer multiple choice question on top of all that writing. I suck that so much effort is required from a 3 credit class that your not even majoring in. But at least his lectures are interesting.....
If you take his online class the answers for the essay questions are in his VIDEO lectures. If you read the book, you will pass this class with ease. There are a lot of papers but it's not hard work, just at a few points a lot of work. Cool guy, easy to talk to. Just not a class you can pass without the book.
Smart, organized, nice. Great class. Maybe my favorite so far.
I'm taking Professor Smith again because of how much I got out of his class. I learned a lot and as long as you show up to lecture and take good notes you will pass the tests. You will need to be ready to read outside of class.
Class was almost too easy. Lectures are barely worth going to, all he does is preach about his political views. Nice guy, but Ill never take another class with him.
Really learned a lot and I felt challenged in a good way. Ive been recommending him.
eye opening view of history from his lectures. he is very informative and gives another perspective from history that is very unique. quiz online almost every week.
Really interesting lectures. I learned that History does matter. Nice man who cares about his students and their education. Top two or three profs at Yuba.
Loved this class. He is one of the best teachers I have had at Yuba College. His lectures are a good pace and easy to follow. No homework, quizzes done on CANVAS are based on the book, and exams are strictly lecture based. If you keep up on your work and studying it's an easy class. Required material says to get Quizlet, but we never needed it.
Attendance not counted, but you will regret if you miss more than a couple lectures. Great dude who keeps up a good pace on his lectures and isn't monotone. Quizzes are online and based on book, tests are based on lectures. Pay attention and take notes, and getting a good grade shouldn't be difficult at all. Best teacher i've had at the campus
Good Teacher. Don't take this course online. You will have to write 6 essays for 3 essay exams but only 3 will be graded. It seems pointless to make students write 6 essays if you only grade 3. Information posted is good information. Discussion posts and quizzes are easy but discussions are tedious as he requires 3 different responses.
Lectures are not that great. He does not take attendance so it doesn't matter if you show up to class or not. Essay questions for the test are given to you ahead of time so you can study them and pre write your essays. He does not grade any of the assignments he has a grader. I would recommend going to tutoring you will be well prepared for tests.
Learned a lot in this real college class. I've never really like history, but this class was eye opening.
You get 3 test (25 MC (based on his lectures), 1 short answer, and 1 essay) the essay questions are given ahead of time so you can prepare. You get a weekly quiz on the chapter assigned to read it consists of 25 questions and you get 25 minutes to do it. You get 1 formal essay and 1 short answer essay assignment his TA grades these.
Stressed about the exams but once you start studying you realize there is plenty of information for the essays. If you come to class and keep up on the work you will have no problem passing. Lectures are interesting and he is organized and funny.
He posts online lecture videos I suggest you watch. Require discussion post bu Tuesday, 2 essays per section and only one is graded. He is responsive if you have questions. Overall, enjoyed the class, informative and if you do the work you'll do fine.
I took his 6 week summer course. 2-3 weekly discussions and tests per week. Every other week you will have 2 full essays to turn In with one being graded. I took this course and macro Econ at the same time; its easy! You absolutely have to do the work though to pass the class. All essays are put through a generator so don't even try to copy.
It was through his classes and Professor Moores that I decided to earn a little extra Associates degree in history. I absolutely love these guys! Amazing courses with material that really helps you see the world from a different perspective. They arent afraid to show you the raw and very real parts of history. Its a lot of work but worth it.
I took 17B. He gave 3 tests throughout the semester with 25 multiple choice, 1 essay, and am1 short answer. You really have to prepare. I recommend going to class and taking notes! His lectures were long but hed crack jokes & was interesting. One civil rights essay(easy)1,000 words, another shorter essay, weekly quizzes. I actually learned history
His grasp of history is astounding and you will leave with a better understanding of your situation in it.
So many essays! you have to do 2 essays in every section that are due the same day, but only one gets graded. Discussion boards and quizzes are easy if you read the book and watch the lectures and presentations. It is too much to keep up with so many essays and yet have to do homework and more essays for my other classes.
Professor Smith is overall a great professor, he responds back to emails very fast and is here for his students. There are 3 essay exams, each have 2 questions that you need to respond to, as well as a personal essay, and a civil rights paper.
We went remote in March and he really helped me a lot. I had never taken an online class and he made it very easy. The topics were interesting and his video lectures were well put together. A lot of short essays, but I learned a lot.
Best history professor at Yuba college.
A great teacher
I liked how we didnt have lectures and he just gave us assignments to do. I like being independent and it was nice not having to participate. I had an A in that class even though my essays were a solid B to B+. Just manage your time and be ready to read! I would totally take his class!
Easy, but be prepared to have 2 essays every 2 weeks. No meetings at all, just work. Just be ready to read and write and you're good! The subject itself is not difficult. Great professor for a dual high school student!
Professor Smith sets the class in a way where as long as you give your effort and study the basic material, you will pass. He gives you all the resources you need in order to succeed. Greta professor.
Smith is one of the professors I warn people about because the entire class was horrible. He makes you read a bunch of books, and most of the credit is for written exams. EXAMS-1st, you have to recognize a text and summarize the rest of the story, 2nd, 20 multiple choice answer, 3rd, write an entire five page essay. All in an hour and 15 minutes.
Smith is a straight forward professor. You know exactly what is expected in the class. His lectures are very good and easy to follow. A solid choice for a professor.
Having this class online was pretty good. His material is clear and straight forward. Fair warning for the Essay Exams though. Its two essays per exam, but as long as you answer the essay questions thoroughly its not too difficult. Overall hes a solid choice.
Professor Smith was a helpful professor, but the material was the problem. He has you purchase a textbook and two other books for the semester. The pace of the class is pretty good, but he overloads you when it comes to finals. It wasnt an awful class, but I wouldnt take his class again.
Do not take any history class with him for the summer. Expects you to read 900+ pages, take 16 quizzes, and write 7 essays in just 6 weeks. His lectures are from 2012 and he puts no effort into the course. The worst part is 3 of your essays will never be read or graded since he randomly chooses one to score. Complete waste of my time and energy.
Taking this class in the summer was a challenge, but Smith was clear that it was going to be 17 weeks of material crammed into 6 weeks. After all, you get the same number of units. Class is doable, but must stay on task. Clear instructions and near instant feedback and email responses. I recommend this prof.
If you love to read and write essays, then this class is for you. However, I feel this class is best to be taken alone for the semester. The main difficulty I have with this class is that the reading material has hard words, mainly to look words up in the dictionary constantly. I spent more time in the dictionary than the reading materials.
Really interesting content and he has a good vibe. Recommend his class.
Great class! I took both his 17A and 17B classes and they were both very fun and informative. If you're someone that dislikes essays I wouldn't take this class. There are 3 essay exams, 2 essays per exam, and one research paper and all the info is given to you. All of which are very easy and quick in my experience. very good class! :D
Hes super nice and replys to emails very fast if you need help. Work isnt a lot just a few essays but he gives you lectures which really help. Highly recommend !
He's awesome.
Love listening to Mr. Smiths lectures, I even look forward going to his class. Highly recommend.
This class was okay at best. He assigned so many essays and graded them really strictly which isn't good if essays aren't your strong point. They were so stressful because he gave us the prompt only a few days before it was due and the topic would have nothing to do with what we were learning about. The final was 3 essays and it was so stressful :/
Dr. Smith is very knowledgeable, but isn't very approachable. If you're interested in history, Dr. Smith provides in-depth teaching on certain aspects that helped shape the nation. If you're not interested in history, there is very little that will capture your attention. Speaking style is similar to Mark Zuckerberg (ref. only, not a criticism).
Good if you are only taking 1 or 2 other classes. Assigned 3 essays throughout the 8 1/2 week course however, the catch is you need to write 2 essays per essay assignment but he will pick 1 out of the 2 to read and grade only 1. Can be difficult if you are a full time student with a job. About 2 discussions and quizzes a week.
He asks so many essays, sumaries, and quizes in a really short time lapse. He asks you 2 high quality essays every exam, in a lapse of 4 days, they bassed on many lecture videos, textbook, slides, and primary sources. The worse thing is: he take one essay and throw away the other one ignoring the efforts you made. Avoid him Choose Rajan Gill
I do not recommend a short course (8 weeks). So many discussions and essays are required in a short time. you have 3 to 4 days to work on 2 essays. The upsetting part is he would make you write 2 essays and he chose only one essay to grade. Altogether we had to write 7 essays and only 4 were chosen to grade. Lecture videos would've been so helpful.
Professor Smith's class is very tough. 40+ pages of reading, a discussion, and a quiz per week. He did not define his terms well (his classes were videos he took 4 years ago) so I struggled to understand. He doesn't allow outside sources, even when writing two, three-page essays (3x per semester). Choose an easier class!! Grades essays hard! Not EZ
Not respectful of all political views. gave me the lowest score he could without failing me because of my differing views.
He makes you write 6 essays and only grades 3 of them and you have no idea what he is going to grade. Quizzes are on quizlet. One research paper at the end. I did not his class and finessed an A. Do not recommend.
If you don't love history, and/or you're not into writing informative essay papers... don't take Dr. Smith. That being said.... he is probably in my top five favorite teachers EVER. There are not very many teachers who actually care about their students like this one does.
Learned a lot. Great topics. Feedback was helpful. I recommend.
Lectures are clear, but the essay-heavy format can be challenging. Leverage resources like Unstuckstudy and the textbook to succeed. Overall, a worthwhile class if you're willing to put in the work.
Tough grader, especially on essays. I completed all assignments and still got a B. Had an 89%, but no extra credit or opportunities to boost to an A. Fair but strict.
HE WILL CHECK FOR AI!! Don't be dumb and use it... Instant fail You get a copy of the AI check instantly, so if you cheat, you get to sit on it until he grades it... You write 6 essays overall and are only graded on 3 - he never reads the other 3. FRUSTRATING. Hard class - Hard grader - thank gawd for extra credit - the only reason I got an A
For the most part there is not a lot of homework there is discussion post and a quiz once a while however essays are worth mostly our whole grade and if you take him a full semester he will do three essay exams there worth mostly whole grade it is around 5 paragraphs each question he gives you two and you need answer both of them
