Trevor Newland is a wonderful teacher and person who goes the extra mile for his students. He puts a lot of thought into class discussions which makes his class fun, and he's a very fair marker. Who knew essay writing could be enjoyable? He inspired me to pursue English. Thanks Trev!

he's super nice n' helpful. his class was full of humor. but one thing i should mention is that his office hrs were too early: 7:30am-9:30am! i hope he can reset them next term coz not every one would like to go to school that early unless he/she has classes.

Don't get me wrong -- Mr. Newland is very easy-going and very kind-hearted -- but don't expect your writing to really improve in his class. If you just need a good grade then TAKE THIS CLASS; however, if your English is already strong then don't expect to get much out of it.

Actually, I found that I had to really listen closely to follow, but I learned alot, especially during our discussions on literature. He's also willing to take time out to help and encourages questions. Great.

Trevor is an absolutely outstanding teacher. Office hours are extremely helpful. He doesn't try to trick you and truly wants all his students to do well if they are willing to put in the effort. My first post secondary english class after being out of high school for 5 years and I got a B+.

I took 1127 with him and I think he's better at 1127. In 1129 he was a little bit biased during the discussions in class, but his essay template remained the same. He's always helpful, always caring, and always smiling. Fair marker. However, work extra hard for the final paper because someone else from UBC is marking it.

Trevor is very kind, ALWAYS smiling and greeting all his students. He is very approachable and open to different ideas. This course is an easy B. But if you want to get an A, it must be your FIRST language. He is super kind, down to earth and always willing to listen.

This class is so easy because he goes over even tiny detail of what your essays need. If you can't pass this course then you don't have a basic grasp of english. He's enthusiastic about the subject matter and makes the poems and short-stories actually interesting. I liked him so much, I took another english class just because he was teaching it.

Trevor is the best. He is SO friendly and helpful. As long as you follow the template for essays, you will do fine. I recommend writing a thesis for your in class essays and bringing it to him to get it revised during office hours. If you have to wait another semester to take a class with him, just do it. Clear grading criteria, but requires that you follow a rigid template for essays (3-5 body paragraphs with 7-9 sentences each in the hamburger structure, rather than flowing essay). Offers a very basic level of insight into literary texts. Equates "theme" to "the lesson of the story/poem." Easy marks, but lacking in intellectual stimulation.

Trevor is very humble and he's always there when you need help. He's very approachable and always insists his students to participate that way the class does't feel too intimidated, especially with an English class. My essay structure has improved and I couldn't thank him enough. I would take him again because he's been the best English prof here.

This is my second English class with Trevor, and I took him because he really shows that he cares and if you listen in class, your essays will improve. My first English course at Langara was horrible, but Trevor made me change my mind about English being one of the most intimidating courses in college. Thanks Trevor for another great semester!

funny dude, enjoyed his class for the most part. He kept lectures interesting which was a plus but my grades stayed the same throughout the semester and I didn't feel more equipped in writing. He is approachable for sure but if you are looking to learn how to write then he might not be the one to go to.

If I had less than 6 courses in my plate, I would definitely take his other English courses. I have a high respect for Mr. Newland, not only because he is knowledgeable, but also because he respects each and everyone in class. Always smiling and ready to help! Highly recommended! The course is reading heavy, and the material can be a bit dull at times but Trevor does his best to keep things current and relevant. Great instructor that, for once in history, has made English less subjective. Trevor marks the essays based on an essay structure introduced in class. For the very first time, English seemed organized and structural to me. Master the essay template and you're guaranteed at least a B-. Of course, an A will require extra effort.

Trevor is hands down the best english prof at Langara. He provides a clear writing style for essays and by simply following it, you are pretty much guaranteed a B-/B. His lectures are entertaining and he does joke around every so often in class. The short stories that he wants us to read are all pretty good as well.

AMAZING! Trevor is super kind and very organized with lectures. He is very helpful outside of class and answers any question. There are about 2-3 papers in total, which are easy if you follow the guidelines he gives you. You will study 4 books, BUY them because you take them for the exam! The poetry exam and quizzes are easy A's if you read daily

Trevor is an example of an effective professor; it is clear that he truly wants his students to succeed. He values and encourages students' questions. With his style of teaching and the course materials, I have not only been able to improve my writing skill, but also become more confident in my own writing.

Exams (essay) are based on what he discussed in class, so do not miss any class. Make sure to read all the reading materials since the quizzes for the books are hard.

My experience in English 1127 was great, Trevor is not only a really caring, and respectful professor, but he is also very passionate for studying literature. He will teach you how to write a proper essay and make everything he requires very clearly, but to get an excellent mark in his class would be very difficult as he is a rather tough grader.

Amazing prof I had thus far! As a person who hasn't written a paper for over 6 years, essay writing is now straightforward and easy for me thanks to him. I had his class online so watching lectures on my own time was convenient, and when marking papers he'll give detailed feedback via audio file. Follow the essay template and you'll succeed!

There is a lot of reading in this course but Mr. Newland goes over the readings and breaks it down in his lecture videos. His grading criteria is very clear and always responds to everyones questions in the discussions post. Essays are simple & based off templates which he teaches and you have to use those to pass otherwise you will get a low grade

There are only two essays and one research paper you need to write. And he gives very detailed and clear feedback and suggestions for your assignment. Take his class, he is one of the best English professors in Langara.

I took him over 2 years ago in my first-ever term for the English requirement in my major. I distinctly remember writing an email at 9pm and he got back to me 2 hours later at 11pm. I never thought to write a review back then, but feel inclined to write one now remembering that. No professor ever does that, but I guess he did.

Normally I dislike writing classes, but this guy made them so enjoyable. Amazing person and teacher! His storytelling abilities are amazing and he is very caring. He also respond to emails very quickly (sometimes even in a matter of a couple hours). The course itself is not easy to get high grades but he makes sure every one can succeed.

If you follow his templates you can get a really good mark (A, A+). There are some details that you need to remember. a few pop quizzes which aren't very easy. a paper about the poems and one inclass essay

nothing bad to say about him as a professor or a person. lays out a very clear format and prepares you well before an exam. goes beyond and above to give feedback criteria. the only downside of this course was our research essays being sent to an outside marker, who screwed over at least half the class. would still recommend his class tho.

It was a fast paced course. I just want to give a thumbs up to Trevor who responded to my Email during the most intense period of exams and research paper even on the weekends to support me and answer my questions.

Lays out a format but very hard to get an A in the class. Especially when one of the essay is given to an outsider marker who marks who is extremely picky. Most people will end with an B or a C unless you are very good at English. If you enjoy literature his class is great but for marks I'd go with someone else
