He's easy, but pretty boring in class.
Not a very good instructor. I didn't learn a thing from his class, but still got a B w/out much effort.
He is hot, funny, friendly, and cares about his students learning!
He's so easy. Class is a Breaze.
he didn't teach me anything, everthing he was teaching i learned in the previous class, i thought his class was a waste of time, although it was an easy "A"
He is a good teacher that enjoys his job.
Teacher knows his stuff, likes what he does, and you learn how to apply the math to your everyday life. Its not just a whole bunch of nonsense equations thrown at you to memorize. He makes it fun, and is an outstanding teacher. The best i've had by far, and i've had 5.
Strange class, with an elusive teacher, & even more incomprehensible text book. The text book full of typos and misdirection was partially written by Dr. Cox. You will never know if your on the write track in class because the book will not address your questions. Save your time & money by taking a traditional math class with a different instructor

Prof Cox is by far one of the best math teachers i have ever had! He made it so that all students were comfortable with one another so that we all felt easy to ask questions and show how we would solve them. I love the class set up and his teaching style. I can honestly say 3.5/4 of the class agrees!! highly recmd!!
Good teacher, but doesn't understand how grading is supposed to work. Only two people in my class receiving A's, grades projects like a hag and will always find something wrong with your work to keep you away from a 100% on anything even if you got it right. You will learn the stuff, but don't expect an A without a lot of BS and some luck.
Pretty good teacher. It was nice for me to learn math from a real true representation of my gender. I was excited about taking this class with a male teacher. I think he is a good example that good looking male types can be intelligent. We dont have to be all nerded out to be smart. Nothing against nerds bcuz at heart we all kind of are.
Ineffective professor. Uses book for homework, but tests don't reflect homework only in class material. Hard to prepare for tests b/c he doesn't prep you at all. Also, he expects you to have a lot of prior knowledge in math, which is difficult for many people. Additionally, he is very disrespectful and rude. Most unhumble, conceited professor ever
Dr. Cox was mediocre. Not extremely helpful, but not a complete ass either.
If you pick a really good group to work with its more enjoyable, but he IS NOT approachable AT ALL so plan on figuring the stuff out with yourself or your group. Hes not too bad but not the best professor either. He offers test corrections and we did do 2 extra credit things. He does have a different teaching style than any other math prof ive had.
Teaching method was hard to understand.
This is one of the hardest classes to get an A in. Although the teacher explains things pretty well, you are expected to show mastery level on the test, no memorizing. There are NO FREE RIDES. 85% of your grade is from 3 exams and the final. No real test corrections. LOTS of group work. Out of 26 students, only 5 got a B. MAYBE 1 student got an A.
I liked him. Good duy, great teacher. got an A
Trey has a PhD but is in a experimental way to learn math but is not a very good method in practice I had the option to take him again I would not he does do a great job with updating you on your grade overall not bad I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Transcends teacher-student understanding of math pretty well, but in the off chance that you don't understand him, expect little aid. Not the most approachable guy. One of 5 people out of ~28 which got an A. Do not miss a class, and do the homework, or you're screwed.
Really good teacher. Worked and studied realy hard and ended with a low B. You will really learn calc2 in and out with this teacher but very hard to get good grade. tests are way harder than homework. if ur a procrasanator and dont study do not take this teacher, you will fail for sure. you have to have a lot of effort just to pull off a low C.
He's a good teacher overall, but teaches lessons and tries to explain how to do problems in as many words as possible. Stay focused at the very beginning of term and stay consistent, you should be fine
Dr. Cox is a very good math teacher. He makes sure everyone participates in class and understands the material. He was easy to pay attention to and learn math skills from. I took his 5 week summer calc class. It was fast paced but Dr. Cox made it work well and allowed everyone to succeed. I would highly recommend Dr. Cox as a math teacher.
Is an ok teacher don't like how he picks on people at random to answer the questions, interrogates you for minutes in front of the whole class. The text book is terrible hard to read with lots of typo's . I would not recommend him to anyone who is taking 151 unless he is the only option left get a someone else.
He focuses on the reasoning behind things way too much compared to the actual answer. He will spend hours talking about what the slope means, if your in MATH 1987 WE ALL KNOW WHAT SLOPE MEANS, this class is useless my high school pre calc class was ten times harder. im pissed i got stuck with him and i would NOT reccomend him to ANYONE! everyone ru
hybrid class. Poor time management w/explainations, arrogant,& unapproachable. Very few points given for hmwk, the rest are from tests. I took him based on comments here & I wish someone had warned me. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME,& not just b'cus he doesn't fit my learning style. He can teach but is so arrogant that he can't help those who benefit most.
Don't be fooled by the first 3 weeks of class! At first, Dr. Cox seems like a really cool guy who loves his job and really wants to make math fun and relevant to you. After that, its test after test and homework with BARELY any instruction! You have to teach yourself out of the book. The whole class had a difficult time not just me.
teaches very well in a very different style then from any other teachers i have had before.
Frank, Trey, Dr Cox, whatever he wants you to call him he is still a poor teacher. The worst exp I have had at CGCC. Group exams, little individual eval., he co-wrote the text & expects that is all you need. Final worth 1/2 the course grade, he played soft rock during exam. His ego gets in the way of educating his students. Spring 2011, rcvd a B+.
He is the best math teacher I have ever had.
Why does everyone use this forum to complain? Seems like even we students can't take responsibility for our own actions!
Cox makes learning a miserable experience. He knows what he's talking about and knows what he's teaching. He will beat the correct answers out of you and question everything you say. Homework is required but he never grades it (If there's something written that sort of looks like math, you'll get full credit). Avoid this man if you can.
He wrote the text book so if you don't understand something, only option is math center! Good teacher but his class is really hard to attend. The homework he gives is out of this world. Hard grader too!
Trey has a way of teaching that leads you fro common sense to the more knowledgeable math that you need. Group work is required during class. Doing homework and taking notes is a must to be successful. He repeats and guides you to the answer and helps you memorize and recognize patterns to be successful. You must for forth work to be successful.
Dr Cox works very hard to show how math applies in the real world and how the procedures are used to get REAL answers that make sense. You CANNOT miss class because class is very interactive. Also don't try to BS your way to an A because it won't work - you have to know your stuff - so beware of that!
Trey was a pretty good teacher. He wants to make sure you know the meaning behind the math. As long as you take notes, you should be good. Also, there is a lot of group work involved so be sure to pick the right people. It's not easy, but it's not difficult either. He reviews a lot to make sure you understand.
Great teacher. Really makes you understand why you do the math (i.e-where the process you are using comes from), which helps in memorization of techniques. Funny, and an all around great teacher. Makes math fun! A lot of team work, which is nice.
Dr. Cox is very arrogant. His lectures revolve around his prowess and about two examples. The rest of class time is sent in group work. Time management for the syllabus is crammed towards the latter semester. I would not recommend. My ease was due to my statistics background.
I took this class 20+ years ago and as weeded out. It is a tough class but he made it understandable and by the end of the semester you know the subject solidly. I STRONGLY recommend him for students who don’t want to just memorize keys on a calculator or if you are going to take any higher math or statistics.
He teaches math the way it is supposed to be taught. Very great teacher. I recommend this teacher if you actually want to learn. If you want to see a teacher write the formulas and write a bunch of problems in the board for the whole class hour without context, take someone else.
This guy is in his own egoistical world. Don't take his class.
Dr Cox know his material. There are 5 grp pjs to do outside class and after you do the pjs he wants you to grade each other on participation. Exams only have 10-12 ?'s and on average the ?'s are worth 10-8 points. If you don't do well on exams there are corrections to do. Do the corr bc Dr Cox treats them as hw therefore its part of your final grd
He loves group work. I hate it, but it really does help the learning process. All his teaching is geared toward helping you GET IT. He DOES care. He IS arrogant, but you will actually LEARN calculus after taking his class. I like math, and got 100% in his class, so it CAN be done.
For an online class there is no help and very little information on to why you miss points. The class is very hard to learn on your own and he only tells you to get tutoring or come to his not very convenient office hours.
I enjoyed Professor Cox's online MAT110 class at Grand Canyon University. He is a good professor, and helped make the concepts for none math inclined person, like me, to understand. There is a lot of homework and class/group discussions, but it is all helpful. He gives good and helpful feedback and is very approachable.
Good teacher makes learning easy makes classes short though
AVOID THIS CLASS Professor has NEVER replied to my questions, is never in his office, has no video lectures on the work. Sometimes he has a 30 sec video doing one type of problem but doesn't bother to explain it. Four tests are 90 percent of the grade and questions are ambiguous. He wrote the TERRIBLE book; forces you to buy it so he can make money
Don't really understand all the arrogant comments. He knows what hes talking about, and is happy to answer any questions. You actually learn why you are doing what you are doing in his class instead of just memorizing things. Only drawback to his class is there is lots of group work, but it's helpful for learning. Best math teacher I've had.
Dr. Cox is a very good teacher. His lectures are easy and straightforward. If you take the time to study, you will get the A. His tests are fair and he grades fair. The only thing that may be overwhelming is the group projects.
I had Dr. Cox for MAT225 @ GCU. He is very knowledgeable in his field of teaching, but his downfall is communication. I put in the work required for an A in all my classes and I struggled to hold onto my A in his class. He gives little feedback on papers and it is all positive feedback so I never knew where to improve. Slow to respond to questions.
Had Dr. Cox for MAT225 @ GCU. As with the rating below me, my big negative was the little yet very positive feedback on papers without getting full credit so I also never knew where to improve. I also struggled to hold onto my A in his class, was by far one of the hardest classes I have taken due to the lack of feedback & I've done Calc 1 & 2.
Dr. Cox is actually nice and accommodating, but he has very high expectations from students. Exams are just challenging. If you get a good grade in his class then you earned it. I would take him again because I can tell he cares about students but I wish he would stop calling on people and putting them on the spot, it just creates too much anxiety.
Took him for calc 2 and I thought he was great. Broke things down very well so the class actually didn't seem too hard. Would definitely recommend for calc.
Took him for a 5-week summer class, I don't have too many complaints about him other than I would ask him what to study for an exam and he would just say my notes, even though I did that on the last exam and didn't do too well. I ended up using khanacadomy to study. He's a solid teacher, fair, and makes class interesting.
If you need to take an intro statistics class this was relatively painless, and I'm not good at math. The homework ranges from 5-12 questions and the online book has hints to help figure it out. There are discussion boards every week which make you think more about the concepts. The few times that I did need to contact Prof Cox he responded quickly
Its difficult to grade a professor for an online class, but I think that Dr Cox has tried to make it as accessible and fair as possible. If you struggle with math, I would highly recommend avoiding this class as trigonometry is confusing at the best of times. Participate fully in discussions and hw and you can make a decent grade.
He's a horrible online teacher. He doesn't help, he gives you a crap ton of a work, the textbook is no help, and the online website is incredibly annoying and hard to use. I hate this class.
Online class, so you can only judge them by so much. Namely the workload and how well they communicate. He doesn't communicate well. If I needed help on a question, he would just link the step by step in his book, when I'm generally looking for help. Also tends to ignore my questions when I ask certain things. Estimations should not be in a quiz.
Mr. Cox is clearly competent and facilitates his education style accordingly. However, there is a significant sense of disconnect with his students. When acknowledging errors within certain assignments, he was extremely defensive and justified his attitude with I have always used the same homework. Be attentive, since teacher error isn't accepted.
I would never take another class with him, he does not round up your grade and he does not help you learn. I was told to try the tutoring center. I got a 79 percent and got a C in his class. The test were online so the computer graded it, it was either right or wrong, no points for the work done. He was not helpful at all every after I asked.
I was understanding this class and when I took the first exam it didn't save my answers, he let me go back and fix it but then gave me a D(?) When I asked him why he never answered. For His final exam, it was difficult to understand. When he put the final grade in i dropped to a low B but for some reason have an F now. He was never helpful.
I took a few classes with Dr. Cox. I must say that his teaching style is responsible for my PTSD about school. He LOVES calling on students and putting them on the spot about answering questions. His class was so distressing because of it. If public speaking isn't your thing, then stay away. Other than that, he's a top notch teacher.
He deserves a lot more credit than some reviews give him. He does call on people a lot, A LOT. His speed is more for people who breathe math, live math, love math. Projects are hard. Just pray you sit next to smart people at your table because that is your group for projects. Tough teacher, but a really great person.
Frank, Trey, professor Cox whatever you name it. He is clearly very educated and proud of his studies in mathematics and will not be afraid to make you feel stupid for asking a question or making a simple mistake. He is very arrogant and is not afraid to show it with his way of teaching, and well if you do take him well good luck. enjoy hell!
I took one of Professor Cox's online classes and I thought it was the best online class I've taken. If you don't put in the time and engage with the course you will fail without a doubt. However, he gave plenty of warning for every assignment, kept things organized and systematic, and clearly cares about teaching math.
I am usually great at math. This class was supposed to be in-person but was moved online due to the COVID. Uses the computer platform generated videos that are not useful to our specific material. When you ask questions about a general type of problem you are having trouble with, he sends you one example of one problem that isnt helpful.
The online format was absolutely terrible. When I asked for help his response, in a nutshell, was "sorry not sorry calc 2 is difficult oh well" I didn't feel like he put any effort in the lectures, and the tests, quizzes AND homework had nothing to do with the few slides of videos he provided for us as "lessons".
Why did I pay to take this class?... I have no idea. I would strongly recommend against taking his online statistics class. He doesn't teach, plain and simple. Any questions you have are lucky to be answered, and the book looks to have been typed by a four-year-old. YouTube will be your best friend if you decide to trudge though it.
As an online class it was very difficult. In person Im sure he's better but online. On his part minimal effort the only thing he grades is your feed back and thats about all he does. I asked for his help twice the first time he told me to check the he said to read the text book better. The second time he told me to ask someone else like a tutor.
Dr. Trey is great. He helps his students in any concept that is important in this class. If u already watched lectures, done the homework and still don't understand, he definitely help you out; showing up in his class to catch up on concepts is essential. The key to success is to pay attention to everything you do, do not skip homework, take notes
This guy needs to quit his day job as a professor and become a p/$& star, since see hes so good at Screwin people over. The class was difficult, and hes is of no help. If you take his class in person, he will do a random selection of answering a question but it feels more like an interrogation. Like, bruh Im here learn not to be interrogated.
If you learn math by reading about it then go ahead and take this class. For online classes, all learning is done strictly through reading the assigned material in the textbook. I cannot learn math by reading about it. If you learn from videos or in-person, take this class from a different teacher, not Dr. Cox. However, he is very nice.
Trey Cox is one of the best math teachers I have EVER had. He was always considerate of the needs of students. His class honestly isn't that hard if you're willing to put in a little effort and I learned a lot. If I can pass the class after not taking math for 2.5 years, I'm sure anybody can.
My favorite professor is Dr. Cox. I would recommend taking his class if you enjoy calculus and are willing to participate in class, do homework, and prepare well for the test. You will pass with a good grade and understanding of calculus concepts. I took cal 1 and cal 2 with him and really enjoy it. GO FOR IT
His class was enjoyable, you were able to interact with the people and work as a group. The reason I rated him a 4/5 was because when he taught things sometimes he would go in a roundabout way, instead of just giving you the formulas. When I needed help, I ended up just going to tutoring. The textbook he gives you vs the one he uses is different.
Work was still locked the day it was due, and was not discussed anywhere. I contacted him, he gave us another day to do them. I had to google the concepts. I found a question marked partial incorrect on my exam, he admitted was correct. The points remained taken off. I am glad this was not the first math course I took, I'd switch majors.
If you don't like group work, leave. There is also a presentation and paper exam for the final. Every day was just randomized group work and he does not do a good job clarifying any questions. Just points out what's wrong and leaves. The class is graded on mainly exams as well, homework barely makes a dent in the grade.
Professor Cox is the BEST teacher I have had at CGCC. He breaks up the course into small chunks, answers emails super fast, and is very caring/understanding. The stats software you learn how to use has super helpful videos. I took this as an 8-week summer course and while it was a lot of work, I never felt lost or overwhelmed. Take math from him!!!
I was so nervous to take Stats after 5 years of not taking math. But this class was a breeze. The stats software you get to use is actually really cool, and I left this class with more excitement from math than any other. He is extremely caring, very knowledgeable, and I wish I could take every math class from him.
Switches up on his students:(
He does not use a text book, and he does not provide any material for the course. If you are already good at math and have no need for teaching/learning, than this is the course for you. If not do not take his course.
He's a strict professor but that's how college math should be in my opinion. I enjoyed his teaching style, and I'm not the best at math myself. Tests are worth 60% of your grade to make sure you understand the material. No study guides for exams, which kinda sucks. He plays good music and you foster good relationships with your classmates.
Don't take this class if you struggle with math. He doesn't exactly teach, he just asks you to do group work on the whiteboards in every class. He doesn't explain concepts: he tells you you're wrong but doesn't elaborate. If you're great at math already, he's perfect for you, but otherwise, do not take College Algebra with Dr. Cox.
This professor may be a good instructor in his fully in-person course, but in his hybrid once a week courses, he is awful. The grade weight is: 10% homework, notes, quizzes, and activity 30% team projects 60% exams If you are expecting to use what you learn in the course to pass, then good luck ,
He doesn't explain anything, and it's all just working on boards with others. Not a good teacher at all. Gives a final exam and final project. Doesn't seem to care much for teaching and just expects you to figure it out yourself.
I don't recommend this professor if you struggle with math. All he does is throw you on a white board with random classmates who may or may not know what to do. I believe his class would be 10x better if he actually had a sit down lecture to teach everyone how to DO the math. But no. 😐
If you aren't good at math, I don't recommend taking his class as you'll find out that almost all of the content you'll just have to teach yourself. Although I took it online, I see similar feedback from those who took the class in person. He doesn't lecture or explain any problems, and you're entire grade pretty much rides on the midterm and final
Just puts students in front of a whiteboard without explaining anything and expects them to know what to do. Also has an obsession with elaborating on things literally everybody would understand with context.
The entire class is structured around learning in groups, which feels like you have to be good at math in the first place to ever have a chance. Absolutely inflexible when it comes to schedules. Learned more at the learning lab than in his classroom. However, at the end of the day, he is a chill guy. But I would not suggest taking any course with
