PChem is a hard class. Dr. Shepherd teaches by going through her workbook and having students come up with answers before lecturing the material, which either works great or doesn't. She is extremely caring, though. Very flexible with due dates and helpful at office hours, gives chances to redo homework, and only has quizzes, not exams
take this class if you want to PASS gen chem. do NOT take this class if you actually want to LEARN chem. she does NOT teach, and expects students to learn everything themselves in group work from a book. she may very well be the WORST lecturer I've had. that being said, there are no exams. just weekly quizzes in recitation. near impossible to fail.
expects students to already know everything. does not lecture whatsoever, and has students use a workbook to complete problems. do not take this class if you expect to learn anything or plan on going into a higher chem course. had to resort to teaching myself the subject and getting tutoring.
Worst teaching style I've ever experienced. Makes her students buy a workbook that she wrote and has them work on the problems in the book during class. Does NOT lecture or teach a single thing.Uses ALEKS which takes a typical 6-9 hours a week to complete. No exams, but there are weekly quizzes (which are very hard to get an A on). Waste of time.
okay, I'm extremely disappointed with her. If you are a student who needs a teacher to actually do their job and teach don't expect it from her. She leaves you to work within a group of your peers who also do NOT know what they are doing. You don't have exams but you do have quizzes that are nearing impossible to get an A on.. I hate her and this.
Worst class I have ever taken. She does not teach what so ever but still expects you to know what you are doing. She does not help even when you go to office hours and expects you to learn from your peers who also do not know what they are doing. If you can avoid taking this class do so at any cost. Worst class I have ever taken.
Very nice lady, but will not teach you a THING. No doubt she is a very intelligent chemist, but NOT meant to be a teacher.
Dr Shepherd is easily the worst professor/teacher i have ever had. She does not lecture at all and instead all of lecture is spent doing workbook problems on things she never taught. Quizzes are given every week that are basically impossible to do well on- she says it's easy to get an a because the class is so heavily curved. take any other prof.
She is really nice and friendly but she doesn't teach. She expects you to figure it out from your peers (who also don't know what they're doing) and a workbook. There are no midterms or finals instead there are quizzes each week which would be great if they weren't so difficult to score well on. Avoid at all costs.
She doesn't teach you even a little bit. Honestly you'd be taught just as well using the OpenStax book (which is what we use anyway). All "lectures" have no lecture. It's exclusively working in a workbook to figure out the material on your own in groups. Don't take if you need even an only okay chem background for harder classes later. Avoid!
The way that she teaches is very difficult for anyone to learn. She uses her own workbook and there are no notes given in the lecture. There are no exams but there are 4-point quizzes that are difficult to comprehend and a 2/4 is the best most people receive. I would not recommend taking her class if you can avoid it.
She does not teach; you and your classmates basically teach yourselves the material. Not only are there quizzes in recitation that make no sense, there is so much homework on Alex to also complete every week.
Avoid at all cost, I would never recommend, I currently have to retake Gen chem 1 and she makes me afraid of failing again just because of the structure of her class, her weirdly worded books, and lack of teaching is terrible. As a person she is decent as an instructor she is not one.
I do not recommend taking this class under any circumstances. Her once a week quizzes are fairly difficult and the average on them is a 2/4. She vaguely explains problems and moves too quick. The only silver lining to this class is that the grade curve is HUGE, but that is to compensate for the enormous amount of students who would fail otherwise.
Professor Sheperd is overall a good person, but the structure of her class sets her students up for failure. Students teach each other out of a workbook during lecture and no notes/instruction are ever given. The class doesn't actually teach students any chemistry which is setting students up for failure in Gen chem 2. Avoid class if possible.
Dr. Shepard's lectures make it very difficult for students to learn or retain material. No lecture ever takes place in class. We were required to buy a workbook that she wrote and we are told to work with other students and basically teach each other the material. It is the first time we see the material, which makes for a frustrating experience.
If you're considering enrolling in her class, this is your final warning. Just DO NOT do it. You will have to teach yourself everything and you will suffer and feel immensely helpless because doing well on her weekly quizzes is near impossible. Your mental health, self esteem, and GPA will suffer. She is nice, but avoid at ALL costs.
The only thing possible of getting 100% on in this class is a chance of wanting to drop out of college and become a stay-at-home-mom/dad. Do NOT recommend. I wish I was joking.
Dr. Shepherd is clearly very passionate about chemistry, and she is very kind and supportive. You can truly tell she WANTS each and every student to succeed. However, her lectures (all workbook work), homework (all online) and methods of quizzing (weekly, non-cumulative) are a deadly combination--which I (and many others) greatly dislike.
Shepherd is fine. Nothing special. If all you need to do is pass take her you'll be fine. If you actually need to know what you're doing for higher level chem later, take someone else. Weekly quizzes are impossible but her grading scale makes up for it.
DON'T TAKE. Tricia was the worst professor I have ever had. Her quizzes are impossible, and there's really nothing you can study to improve. They are 4 questions; if you manage to get 2 correct, you get a B. Her lectures are miserable. She uses a "textbook" where all you do is fill out practice problems. Also, you can't get in contact w/ her.
Uses POGIL and doesn't lecture which makes it hard to retain and understand information. You do workbook problems in class with other students the entire time. It is incredibly ineffective and frustrating. Her class would be so much better if she just lectured. You essentially teach yourself. I would never recommend. Take anyone else.
incredibly nice woman, but weekly quizzes in recitation are graded out of 4 questions. average is 1-2/4. Amount of homework every week is insane and none of it aligns with lecture. You use a workbook (random textbook activities) the entire lecture with an assigned group. nothing ive learned is from her, lab TA taught me more than she did.
Has everyone work out of a workbook she wrote & the lectures are just working in a group to answer questions in the book. Does absolutely no lecturing, prepare to teach yourself everything. Weekly hw would take 6-10 hrs to finish, quizzes didn't align with lecture material but somewhat with the hw. Only good thing about her class is the huge curve.
My peers and I have discussed how lost we felt often in her class. You end up teaching yourself often. The homework, lecture, lab, and recitation are all always in a different place on a different topic so it is hard to fully understand any topic. Unless you are already very good at chemistry or are a very quick learner, DO NOT take Dr. Shepherd.
Dr. Shepherd may be nice but being nice doesn't prepare students for any future courses. The first big red flag was that she made us buy her book. She gives no lectures and makes us work out of her book all class with no clear directions. In addition the class organization is a mess.We are on one unit for lectures, another for HW, & another for lab
In the past I have never struggled with any sort of STEM course until taking chem with Tricia Shepherd. The majority of your grade will be based off of 4 question assessments. Sounds easy? Think again. The first question will be about stuff you learned in class and question four will expect you to figure out time travel. Don't waist your tuition.
Professor Shepherd is a very nice teacher, I don't really like here method of teaching in lectures (POGIL), chemistry is hard regardless but if you put in effort in class you will be fine.
Dr. Shepherd is a HORRIBLE professor. She teaches based on the workbook she wrote (which is mandatory to purchase in order to take her class), no lectures. She treats her students like Kindergarteners who are incapable of doing chemistry. In order to do well in this class, you essentially have to learn everything on your own in order to do well.
Tricia should not be teaching chem 0110. The entire class had absolutely no lectures, so if you come into chem with a limited background, you will be teaching yourself everything. The entire grade is comprised of your assessments which are impossible to get higher than 75% on most of the time. She is sometimes also passive-aggressive to students.
Very poorly structured and taught class. You basically have to self teach yourself the whole class. Grade is mainly based on weekly quizzes that everyone averages a 1/4, and on many of them nobody even gets a 4. That being said, with the way the course is graded it is nearly impossible to fail. Those with poor backgrounds in chemistry will struggle
The one thing this professor did that I thought was great was her lack of lectures. I know a lot of people hated that since we had to figure out most things by ourselves, but I prefer that over a boring lecture any day In her class, you sit with the same group of people everyday and work with them. Way better than a typical lecture all day everyday
the POGIL style of the class could be frustrating since there weren't really lectures, class time was just spent doing workbook exercises in groups. Sometimes I was disappointed by her attitude toward the class/students. I do believe she's trying though and wants the best for us. I liked that there weren't exams, just quizzes with lots of retakes.
Overall ok class, even though I didn't like her way of using the POGIL method. You have to really teach yourself the material and practice the material 2-3 times a week in order to get a 1/4 or 2/4 or 3/4 on her quizzes, depending on the effort you put in.
Dr Shepherd structured this class based on using POGILs instead of actual lectures. While pogils could be useful, i think they need to be used in addition to actually lecturing. You had to teach yourself all of the content- and while you got retakes on every quiz, the lack of partial credit made it impossible to get a perfect score. I averaged a 2.
Professor Shepherd is nice but she is not the best professor. Her assigned recitation group idea is not the best, with the wide range of students' experiences with chemistry in that lecture. Lecture is just teaching yourself through POGILS and can be hard to learn from if this is the first serious chem class you're taking. Probs find a diff prof.
Yikes. Tricia is the worst teacher/professor that I have EVER had. She will tell you that she is your biggest cheerleader and then not actually teach you anything, but give you an impossible 4 point assessment where the last 2 questions are completely random so there is no way to prepare for them. If you plan on taking any higher Chem avoid Tricia!
Do not take her if you a grade higher than B. There's 4 question assessments every week, and last two questions are impossible. They are just designed to make people fail. She even said the last question will be something that is not covered in the class. But then what is the point of lecture??
Dr. Shepherd was a TERRIBLE Chem 1 professor. The only reason anyone passed was because of the curve: my 69% was a B. Only passed because I took AP Chem the year before. She teaches only out of a textbook that she wrote, and lectures are just group work with no explanations. TAs are the only good resource. Please, for your sanity, DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!
horrible. taught myself everything. cannot lecture--and doesn't lecture. you sit and do a group pogil and then she gives you the answers. it doesn't help to go ever. my ta was so great she taught me too. she is so nice but she cannot teach. can retake a test 3 times, almost impossible to get 4/4 which gives you an A. occasional tophat. avoid!!
AVOID!! The only way to pass this class is the curve she gives. If you took AP chem in high school, it is the only way you can do good in this class. If not, be prepared to teach yourself all the content. She is very lazy and does not even go over answers to her own book. And if you ever have a question about your quiz, beware of major attitude.
Does not teach only instructs off a workbook she wrote. Recitation quizzes are 60% of your grade and are not graded well. Will spend a large amount of time doing Aleks but it is barely worth any credit in the class. Kind person but an awful professor.
She has absolutely no clue how to teach. The weekly four-question quizzes do a better job of teaching you how to make up BS answers than helping you learn actual chemistry. Take any other professor for chemistry if you want to learn; take her if you want to "take an explorative approach" and spend 2 hours a week in Mickey Mouse's clubhouse.
WORST chem1 professor. She does not teach anything in lectures and makes you solve the workbook that she wrote. There are recitation quizzes which make up for 60% of your grade and you mostly score 2/4 in them. She does not explain how to solve these questions. The ALEKS homework takes up to 10 hrs per week and is only 20% of the grade.
She doesn't teach, uses the workbook "POGIL" method as the holy grail. Doesn't offer much further explanation beyond the workbook and doesn't answer questions fully either. If you took AP chem and already have a good basis, the curve is really good so you will probably get an A. But this class won't help you solidify your chemistry foundation.
class structure is frustrating because there is no structure. no lecture and students are expected to learn primarily from aleks homeworks. weekly quizzes that add up to being 55% of the grade are impossible to get 3/4 or 4/4 on because the content is never taught or clarified.
Definitely not your typical "notes and exams" class. Grade is based on quizzes taken weekly out of 4 points. Hard to get more than a 2/4 but you are allowed to retake it after couple of weeks. Did not review well for the ACS final. Heard that many, many others in her classes were close to failing. She is knowledgable but doesn't know how to teach.
Tricia Shepherd is the worst professors I have had, she has a quiz every single week that has four questions 2 of which are about what we are learning and the other 2 are questions that have no correlation to what she is teaching and everything is graded very critically. Many students in this class had the same thoughts, good luck you get her.
Wouldn't recommend her to anyone. Her class is close to impossible. I took AP Chem and Organic Chem and her class was still extremely difficult. She got confused on questions when trying to explain them. Your whole grade depends on these 4 question quizzes that aren't on any material covered. I learned nothing and honestly think that set me back.
dr sheppard is so bad. her "pogil" method of teaching is literally having us work in a workbook and she shows the answers and even if you ask her to clarify how to get an answer she can't even tell you. the majority of your grade will be on recitation quizzes that are literally impossible to get more than a 2/4. terrible professor don't take her
Dr. Shepherd is a very nice woman, however, when it comes to teaching she is stubborn to change. Her Pogil method, which uses a workbook to teach you chemistry, is nearly useless. Despite her generous scale many students still struggle to pass her class. The content is not necessarily difficult, but she just does not know how to teach it.
She is very friendly and kind, but I personally didn't have a very good experience in her class. The quizzes were oddly structured. She does not lecture, and it is easy to get frustrated with this class. As someone who knew the content very well, I still struggled on most assignments. She gives retakes which is nice, and she has a very heavy curve.
Flipped classroom learning style except she gives no pre-lecture or lectures AT ALL. Seriously. Took self-learning to another level. If you need to learn chemistry or need to take another advanced chem course DO NOT take her, you will not learn. It's frustrating to pay to take this class & have to teach the class entirely to yourself. Inadequate.
She assigns weekly quizzes during recitation, no multiple choice, and no partial credit. The average quiz scores were 2/4. She doesn't lecture, you basically teach yourself through assignments on Aleks. When I went to her office hours to ask for help her only advice was to read the book she wrote (which I was already doing)
Dr. Shepherd relies on small group work, having students teach each other new concepts. This class does not have a midterm, but does have an assessment each week. These assessments are difficult, and often have a class average of less than 50%. We also had 3 finals: one for lab and two for the lecture. I unlearned chemistry in this class.
POGILs!!!
Horrible, just horrible. POGIL DOES NOT BELONG IN A CHEMISTRY IN A CHEMISTRY SETTING. I AM SO NOT PREPARED FOR CHEM 2
Tricia was not a good professor as she relies heavily on group work, where if you don't understand a concept, a member of your group will hopefully explain it to you. She has a workbook that is mandatory to buy which is poorly worked into the course since the quizzes have NOTHING to do with what we did in lecture/the workbook.
very nice and has a very generous curving grade-there is no "final",the only thing graded are recitation quizzes (which you get multiple chances).I do not recommend taking this class if you do not have a strong background in chemistry. You HAVE to buy her workbook, and she is not willing to change her teaching method, often rushes lectures.
There were no lectures, and I was required to purchase a work book written by her. The class was just working on problems in this book. She simple just shouldn't be considered professor, cause she doesn't teach. As far as grading, it's difficult to grade students comprehension of work you don't teach them. I have nothing nice to say.
If you don't already have an impeccable chem 1 background, just avoid her. There are no lectures, no structure, and you kind of just struggle the whole time. She is unhelpful when answering questions and is difficult to reach outside of class. There are so many better options that will set you up for success
Don't do it! No actual lectures happening however, everyone is struggling together, comforting I guess.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. There is no lectures/notes, there is NO teaching at all. You buy her workbook and try to solve the problems urself. Ridiculous workload/grading. Tests are 15 minutes and only 4 problems, BIGGEST JOKE EVER. Save your money and time. Will tank ur GPA and teach u nothing. She Should not have a job
Prof Shepherd is a strange woman. She would be better suited as a kindergarten teacher. She has no teaching abilities, so you must teach yourself almost all the content. On top of that, the workload is insane. The amount of work I get from Chem is more than the work I get from Calc, Bio, and English combined. Stay away from this class.
Her quizzes were ridiculously difficult and nothing like what we did in class. I got a 4/4 maybe twice. She acts like a kindergarten teacher and makes you buy her terrible book. If you know chemistry, you have to teach everyone in your group what's going on. She curves because everyone would fail otherwise. Only take if every other class is full.
Dr. Shepherd is a very sweet lady, however her teaching method just does not work for most students. If you cannot learn via POGIL style, I 1000% recommend you stay away from this class. It's very difficult to learn from her workbook, and her grading is clear but strict. Do not recommend taking unless you already have a strong background in chem.
I love chemistry, but this is genuinely my least favorite class. The POGIL book can sometimes be helpful, but I feel that she barely teaches. If you do not have a good understanding of chem, don't take her. The ALEKS is random stuff that is not always covered in lectures. She is very sweet, but overall not a good professor.
She does not teach. Only learn from online ALEKs. Good luck.
Good luck if you have Shepard, seems sweet/caring but IS NOT. She doesn't teach—just makes you buy her POGIL book and an ALEKS membership. In class, you do POGIL questions, she gives answers, and moves on. I've learned nothing and have never been so frustrated with a teacher. If you're struggling, try your TA's office hours—they're somewhat helpful
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. Even with a strong chemistry background I only got a B+, I would study for hours and hours on the quizzes just to get a 8/10. BEWARE extremely hard to get a good grade, let alone understand the material. You teach yourself and the rest of the students do not know anything either.
DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU ARENT GOOD AT CHEM. Pls save yourself. SHE DOES NOT TEACH. She goes by her own POGIL book and YOU WILL TEACH YOURSELF AND FAIL. Best on average u can do on her quizzes EVERY WEEK are 8/10. homework was fine but if you intend to go premed or stem major, pls look for a NORMAL PROF FOR CHEM, she will not teach you a thing
I personally did not like this class. My favorite subject in high school was chemistry and now I hate even looking at my work. I didn't like working out of her own book that she wrote and the Aleks assignments were a waste of time mostly. I will say the only time I learned anything was through Aleks or through my TA in recitation.
CHEM 0110 with Dr. Shepherd was a headache. Although she comes off as a nice person, her class structure as a professor was not good. If you have a REALLY strong chem foundation, go for it. She uses POGIL as her "teaching" method, which means you teach yourself. Stay away if possible.
Worst professor I've ever had. Insanely hard class, the lectures were a joke, and you must go for top hat attendance. She MAKES you buy her POGIL book, which she wrote that has so many typos. If you aren't fully confident in your chem skills, I would STAY AWAY if possible. sorry.....
The only reason why I got even somewhat of a good grade was b/c I took AP chem in high school; everyone I knew struggled through the whole thing because she does not teach. You have assigned seats in lecture w/ a group you can't pick. You must use her POGIL book w/ a ton of typos which she will constantly say she doesn't like the questions in. #bad
Lectures aren't really 'lectures' because she isn't going thru info like normally, instead, you have to buy a $35 POGIL book that she cowrote (with many typos), which is what the lecture is based on! Weekly quizzes were nearly impossible to score a 10/10 on because of her choice of grading. If you haven't taken AP Chem before, don't take this class
Nice lady, but awful professor. I took ap chem, but it didn't help. You must buy her POGIL book, and class is essentially a flipped classroom with no learning portion, just problems in class - no lecture. ALEKS was the only thing I learned from. Weekly quizzes had retakes, but impossible to get >80%. Grades will raise slightly at end. DO NOT TAKE!
No traditional lectures. Weekly quizzes that were impossible to get over 80%. I learned everything through YouTube and ALEKS, even though we had to buy a workbook the professor wrote. If you have to take any future chemistry class, absolutely DO NOT take this one because this won't prepare you for it. The professor was very kind though.
Wow please do NOT choose her as your professor. She makes you buy a work book (that of course she wrote) and then that what you use to TEACH YOURSELF THE COURSE. Class time is used for working through the book and she just kinda walks around. The last question on the weekly quizzes is literally just hit or miss. HAVE A STRONG BACKGROUND IN CHEM!!!!
I would not recommend it at all. It is impossible to score more than an 8/10 on quizzes. Be prepared to teach yourself. weekly Aleks and once-a-week quizzes make up your whole grade. Don't take it if you don't have a solid background in chemistry. Stay away at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
she was awful. only tests were a quiz each week. lectures not helpful. you have to buy the book she wrote and it is horrible. stay away try and get a different professor if you can. if she is the only one left do anything you can to find someone else she sucks.
Absolutely not. I got a 4 on AP Chem in high school, could have placed out of this class, and got a B. Thought that this class wouldn't be that bad since I'm good at chemistry, but she DOESN'T LECTURE. Weekly quizzes are completely arbitrary and lectures aren't even about chemistry. Makes you buy a $35 textbook that SHE wrote. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Shepherd is a nice person but horrible professor. She makes you buy a POGIL book she wrote and uses it instead of teaching. Your grade is mostly weekly quizzes, but it's hard to get a 10/10, even with multiple attempts. The only reason I survived is because I took AP Chemistry in high school - would not recommend taking this class.
Her class is POGIL, which means that you work with other students on problems and then she's supposed to go over the questions (she doesn't). If you go to her office hours, it will be easier to learn the class material and hopefully improve your quiz scores. There are 3 retakes per quiz (and you'll need them). A lot of self-studying is required.
POGIL! I took AP Chem in high school and that's the only thing that got me through - I felt like I had more chemistry knowledge before even taking the class than after (idk how that's even possible). Aleks taught me more then the lectures. "Assessments" taken during lab do add up (recommend getting 8/10) but they get harder each try. DON'T TAKE!
I took ap chem in hs and took this class to have a stronger chem background and this did the total opposite. Her teaching method involved assigning problems during lecture with 250+ students and making small groups (approx 4) to work together and basically figure it out on your own. She assigned hours of work on ALEKS as well… I'd steer clear
Participation was rounded at the end of the semester. there are no actual exams except for ACS at the end of the semester. ALEKS doesnt correlate to any of the quizzes you take, but it does help know the material. She doesnt teach in terms of actual lectures though, so be warned if thats how you learned. You do a POGIL book mostly.
horrible class. nice person, but terrible teacher. never gave true lectures, just makes you do POGIL questions and shows the answer key without explaining. felt very underprepared for chem 2. no exams, but there are weekly recitation quizzes which are nearly impossible to get 10/10 on. weekly ALEKS hw which is very tedious. overall don't recommend
prepares you for absolutely no part of her OWN quizzes or the ACS exam
POGIL, Assigned seats, pitiful Teacher. I was either utterly lost or having to teach my group the material.Aleks homework averaged 2-5 hours a week.Weekly quizzes were almost impossible to get high scores on. Never explicitly explains material then takes off points from quizzes when your explanations don't align with her's. All around AWFUL.
For the love of god avoid this woman at all costs. She's a terrible teacher, she comes off as nice and approachable but is actually pretty rude. She makes attendance mandatory and takes attendance thru participation for an 8am class. Save yourself
Do not take this professor. Everything is taught through Pogil, no lectures. She assigns certain problems for you to do during class and then BRIEFLY goes over the answers. Oftentimes she only displays the answers for a second and does not explain them well.
Like others said, she does the POGIL thing. If you have her you are better off just teaching the material to yourself. If you rely on her teaching, you'll be hopelessly lost. Instead, we count crackers and puppy noses but when the weekly exam comes it is totally different. The only reason I went to class was to get the participation grade.
Do not take this professor. Her POGIL style is extremely hard to benefit from and she expects you to know the material before she teaches it which makes no sense. Her ALEKS homework took way too much time and I felt as thought I could've gotten a much better grade in CHEM 0110 if I had a different teacher.
Tricia is heaven sent after having Fortney for chem 1 the first time and doing poorly. A lot of students don't like the POGIL style teaching, but I found it very helpful learning the material for the 2nd time. Quizzes every week, no exams, retakes on everything!! Homework heavy but it helps. If you are retaking chem 1, take her!!
I'm retaking gen chem 1 and I'm doing it with shepherd and I could not be HAPPIER!! This class not only reinforced my knowledge but also built up my confidence with test taking. She truly does NOT deserve the hate she gets, she is willing to work with you in any way in order for you to succeed! POGIL testing method is great imo!
Dr. Shepherd is kind but not a good professor. She fails to lecture and relies on her POGIL book to teach in class. You end up teaching yourself everything, so you need to have a good background to do well. No exams, but there are weekly recitation quizzes, which you get 3 attempts on each. Would not recommend if you don't have a strong background
For what it's worth, she's a nice lady just not a good professor. She uses the POGIL system which I know is hit or miss for some people but it especially didn't work for me. The lectures are mandatory and attendance is taken through TopHat, but they don't actually teach you anything? All the learning is done on the Aleks work assigned each week.
I hated her class so much I changed my major away from anything STEM related. She seriously killed my passion for it. This isn't to say she's a bad person, but her class is dull and uses the POGIL system in place of actually teaching material. You are more or less teaching yourself the material for recitation every week. Steer clear if possible.
If you want to pass chem, take her as she has no exams. A quiz every week with up to 3 retakes. ALEKS is due every week which is very time consuming if you don't have a good understanding on the topics. She doesn't really explain how to do the problems and expects you to immediately understand it from the pogils.
yo i made sure to set my alarm late so I miss this disgraceful class. Respectfully, the sole reason this teacher is not on probation is because of the fact that her class is basically unfailable.
Dr. Shepherd's class is easy to pass, but hard to succeed in. Her lectures are entirely pogil, with zero actual instruction. ALEKs homework can be difficult, but manageable. Went to her for help once and she told me she didn't know how to solve the ALEK problem. Very nice lady but you should choose someone else if you want to learn anything.
only succeeded because I was retaking chem 1. extremely difficult to learn topics, and fails to explain topics - does POGIL which doesn't work for most people. basically impossible to get over an 8/10 on quizzes, even with retakes. ALEKS is annoying but boosts grade. treats students like little children. also she made up her own topic/drawings?
Dr.Shepherd's class is manageable if it's not your first time taking chem. She doesn't actually teach the course, you learn by doing everything yourself in a POGIL book. It's an easy class since there's no tests and you get 3 retakes on every quiz, but you also need to attend class for the tophats. She's sometimes rude but overall it's not the worst.
Not a fan of the teaching style
If you're looking for the worst experience taking gen chem 1 look no further! This class is great if you don't care about passing with a grade higher than a B and/or have no interest in learnin about chemistry. Don't just take my word for it, consult the literal HUNDREDS of 1 ratings she has! The fact she still has a job at Pitt baffles me.
Do not take. It's almost impossible to get above a B in this course because the assessments are purposefully made to only get a 8/10 or maybe a 9/10. POGIL method-style "learning" hardly teaches you anything. Uses top hat and in-class assignments for participation, even for 8am classes. Seems nice but is very rude.
Absolutely awful. She uses POGIL to teach the class, which is a workbook she wrote, and has a bunch of typos! There are quizzes each week instead of exams, which I'd say is the best part of the class but it is hard to get anything higher than a 7. Unless you have a strong background in chemistry already, I would NOT take her.
I only gave her a two because this is my second time taking Gen Chem 1. Class is based off of workbook she wrote, and is all working; no lectures. No exams, but quizzes every recitation with 3 attemps at each quiz. Final was the 3rd retake of every quiz. She is extremely kind and there are worse chem professors here, but avoid her if possible.
Literally the worst she uses POGIL and doesn't teach. The only valuable info I've learned from this course has been from recitations; going to class is literally useless except it's mandatory because she always has some in class assignment. Avoid if you have any respect for yourself.
Like what all the other reviews say if you are prepared to teach yourself Chem 1 then she is a fine professor to take. Flipped lecture can be fine in concept but she does not post videos prior to class, the "flipped" portion is using her textbook POGIL which is the entirety of class. The retakes are nice but nearly impossible to get above a 7/10.
I lost my will to live after taking this class. If you like sunshine and rainbows and joy, please avoid at all costs, I don't know when I'll ever feel joy again.
Her class structure had good intentions but did not go well for actually learning at all.
Trust the bad reviews. She can't teach; her classes were counterproductive, wasting my time and money. With little chem background, I had to self-study, and my test scores never exceeded 80%. Avoid her unless your chem foundation is solid. Her POGIL methodology clearly doesn't work. She needs better communication skills before teaching again.
Do not take this class, it's a mess. The majority of your grade is based on quizzes which she designs to be near impossible to get more than an 8/10 on, averages usually are 5 or 6 out of 10. She makes you buy a book she co-wrote. Forces groups in "lecture". The homework will be hours long and irreverent. Good luck getting beyond a B. DO NOT TAKE.
Its very easy to PASS her class, not to get a good grade in. If you miss lectures and cant keep on top of quizzes you wont do well. My advice is: try to go to every lecture because attendance is a big part of your grade, the quizzes in lab are all basically the same as the recitation worksheets. As long as you stay on top of these you will be fine
The rumors are true... DON'T TAKE SHEPARD. Most of your grade is dependent on weekly quizzes and ALEKS. First 2 questions of the quizzes are doable, the last 2 are absurd questions that almost always revolve around an alternate universe. POGIL is a punishment for all your sins. An A in this class is doable, but you will have to teach yourself.
I took Sheppard to retake chem 1 so I already had some understanding of the class material. I highly do not recommend if you have little background in chemistry. The class is passable however homework is time consuming and doesn't always align with class. She does not teach in lecture you work through a book which isn't always useful for learning.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! She does not teach- everything must be taught to yourself using textbook readings- her lecture is just mandatory group work from her POGIL workbook. She assigns massive amounts of homework through ALEKS. There are assigned seats based on recitation times. Prepare to teach yourself- and you need a background in chem already.
WORST CHEM PROFESSOR EVER makes you buy the textbook that SHE wrote has the most impossible quizzes after barely teaching anything the highest and its almost impossible to get 100 on them.
This is the worst chem class I have ever taken. DO NOT take this class if you want a good GPA and/or to be happy. Lectures are boring mandatory group work from the textbook that she wrote (which you are required to buy) and recitations are a weekly quiz designed so that you can't get 100%. While you can retake the quizzes, the retakes are harder.
During the lectures, she does not teach very much and just throws you into a bunch of questions without example or help prior. You're usually at least 3 topics ahead of what you'll be testing on in the weekly recitation quizzes, which are graded quite oddly. They are similar to the recitation WS's given the week prior, but they're hard to interpret.
so bad. do not take.
do NOT take this teacher unless you have a strong background in chemistry. You are forced to buy a self-teach workbook from the pitt store that she wrote and it's full of typos. Once in her class i had written something backwards in my book, and she pointed and laughed at me. Also, homework takes 6hr/week. She never has anything nice to say. AVOID
if you didn't finalize your schedule yet, ANYONE ELSE BUT HER. If you already enrolled in her class you'd better get on your knees and start praying. best way to put it is the entire class is just straight ragebait. I already took AP chem and she's got me failing quizzes. greedy, evil little woman. at least you'll trauma bond with your lab partner
EVERYTHING is wrong with this course. The ALEKS assignments are extremely time consuming and are on future content, meanwhile in class we are learning current content, and in recitation we're being quizzed on the past content, and this is happening all at once. Genuinely, what type of drug was she on when she structured this course?
Don't even bother showing up to class, you won't learn anything. Doesn't know how to teach. She should NOT be a professor and should stick to her bible studies.
evil evil woman. i don't believe she genuinely has any passion at all for teaching. her class is a tour of the nine rings hell and her “teaching” style is out of satan's anus. i think i would cut my middle toes off before taking her class ever again. pogil is worse than hell and the aleks hw isn't any better.
I found this class rather difficult to follow along with and understand Dr. Sheperd's lectures. This was mainly due to her teaching method of using her workbook that you need to purchase that insists you must teach yourself chemistry. Yes, I will be passing this class, but I am rather unhappy with having to teach myself this entire subject.
She does not teach. She is a POGIL teacher and I promise you will not learn anything. She does not lecture or teach you any information, you have to teach yourself everything. She makes you do worksheets with other students in the actual lectures. Class time is literally spent working on problems from her own textbook she made. DO NOT TAKE HER RUN
booty clapper. Easy class to pass, but very hard to get a good grade in. Near impossible to get an A because of POGIL format and weekly quizzes.
I would rather stick a tennis racket in my butt than take that class again. The class consists of her forcing you to buy an expensive textbook that she wrote. She then tells us to do problems that she doesn't teach us how to do. If you do get stuck with the big T shep, make sure you are familiar with the organic chemistry tutor.
Every negative review here is absolutely true. Do not take this professor if you do not have a strong background in chemistry, you will not be able to learn anything. If you know chemistry it will be pretty easy to pass but very difficult to get a good grade. Either way lectures are a complete waste of time, all you do is complete a workbook.
Personally, I have no background in chemistry; do not take this class if you don't either. POGIL learning should not be qualified as "learning." Professor Shepherd's workbook is useless. I spent, usually, over 7 hours a week on homework that did not always pertain to what we covered in class. This course goes by way too fast. The tests are painful.
I genuinely feel like the goal has been to rage bait me. She honestly seems sweet but goodness gracious is the grading harsh. Oh and if you want an A you need at least an average of a 90 on all the assessments (way harder than one would hope and dream)
Geniunely awful. You spend hours on homework that often has little to do with the class. It is hard to fail as getting 80% on the quizzes is easy but good luck getting anything higher. Be prepared to teach everything to yourself. Attend the lectures as there are participation assignments. You probably won't fail but it's still a miserable class.
DO NOT TAKE HER. This is genuinely the worst class I have ever taken in my life, I have learned nothing at all from it and have struggled way more then succeeded. She is easily the worst professor at Pitt.
do not take this class. she even confuses herself. genuinely one of the least knowledgeable people i have ever met in my life.
Literally the worst professor ever, whatever you do, don't take this course with her. I learned absolutely nothing. Her method of teaching simply sucks.
Didn't like the class at all and makes us do problems that don't even appear on her tests won't ever take again
straight up do not take if you didnt take AP chem in high school. she is super nice but worst lectures and course EVER
do not take her. Going into chem 2 was so rough- I didn't have a strong foundation in most of the basics that everyone in other classes had learned in chem 1. She uses the pogil workbook (that she wrote herself) and u dont really learn. Getting an A is still very doable, if you teach yourself everything. taking her was an awful choice.
Do not take this professor unless you have no other choice. She does not teach any of the curriculum herself and the POGIL method is flawed since she never lectures the material. Her weekly quizzes are worded very poorly. She is extremely unapproachable, and when asked questions, turns hostile and degrading. She has a 1.3/5 rating FOR A REASON.
if you are thinking about taking this course for neurons and chemicals community. DO NOT DO IT!! She doesn't teach anything and the last 2 questions of the knowledge checks are bizarre and sometimes the last ones are near impossible. Watch organic chem tutor for self teaching and Roxi Hulet for aleks HW. YOU WILL HAVE TO SELF STUDY ALL OF IT!
Definitely not my favorite professor. She teaches POGIL style out of a book she wrote herself and you have to buy. Homework is aleks assignments due every monday, 50% is completing on time and 50% is aleks pie completion. Weekly quizzes in recitation, hard to get more than an 80% on because last question especially is close to impossible to do.
In reality, she's very sweet OUTSIDE of class. She barely explains concepts in class and I did have to self teach most/all concepts which took up so much time. I did meet her one on one twice and she was a little more clear, but overall I wouldn't recommend her to others as she's hard to follow in class.
Never again. Dr. Shepherd cannot teach, and her POGIL method does not help to learn the topics. I had not taken a chemistry course before this semester, and it still feels like I haven't taken a chemistry course. I thank God every day that I escaped her class with a B. Steer clear, no matter what.
Class is easy to pass with a B or C but hard to pass with an A because weekly quizzes are majority of the final grade and tend to ask absurd creativity questions rather than chemistry. Focus on good lab scores, studying exact questions on recitation worksheet, and doing any extra credit.
She absolutely tanked my GPA. Don't even bother taking her out of necessity just work around it somehow because she'll make you want to drop out.
You can do well in the class if you genuinely lock in on each week's unit for the recitation quizzes. I did have to teach myself a majority of the content, and that's coming from someone who had an excellent AP chem teacher. Endless ALEKS modules and her tedious/difficult grading system makes this class take years off your life.
