ok exams are soooo hard! You have to read everything in the book and go to class for the notes. It SUCKS! She is so vague about what is on the tests- AVIOD IF POSSIBLE.
exams are very easy, gives same questions as in practice quizzes; need to read txtbk, go to class, and take notes but will get good grade; big curve and gives easy extra credit
HATED THAT CLASS!
good class and she's nice. must go to class/take notes but tests straightforward. extra credit opportunity
her classes are incredibly boring and her tests, although somewhat easy if you take the online practice tests, still cover WAY too much info and are way too specific for an intro class. DEFINITELY not worth it to fill a group requirement
class is fine. exams arent too hard if youre there for class
Horrible class, boring lectures that irrelevant to tests, can't pronounce words correctly. Much harder than the other 201 courses DONT TAKE HER!!!
gotta go to class to do well, do the extra credits!!

i don't understand how someone with a doctorate degree has so much trouble pronouncing adverbs. this woman's voice annoyed me, and the class was pointless. take another prof. if you can.
One of the best professors ive ever had-if u ever took the time to go see her you would know that she will go out of her way to help her students. If you put any effort at all in her class you will do fine. She is more than willing to help and is very understanding
she was boring and awfukl
She is painfully boring. All she does is bout off loads of information from her power-point presentations as the students struggle to keep up taking notes. She turns Intro to Sociology into a vocabulary lesson. Every day in class is the same...very tedious.
Shes good. If u go class and do the xtra credits youll do fine.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD- incredibly boring and just reads her slides- insane amounts of notes. She also cant pronounce the word "resource". dont go to her office hours- they dont help. she has no respect for students and thinks she is better than everyone. Her tests are hard. dont take her.
Her class wasn't incredibally hard, but if u took psych it is a replica. Hint: she will have at least 5-10 question on exam that r exactly from online quizes so take them! The class is a bore and u will end up reading the book to make up for what she couldn't rush through. Class avg for test were 75
I think most of these people are dum'ba'sses. She's from canada, hence why she pronounces some words differently. Are all you upper class snobs so dum you can not understand this? If you went to leacture, took notes, and did the quizzes, you did fine. Grow up people.
This class isn't hard! A lot of the notes come straight from the book but going to class is important because she uses examples from the discussion for exam questions, along with online practice tests. Grade mostly from 4 exams with the lowest grade dropped, easy A/B+ if you study.
Her class does require effort, but its not like its impossible. It is a LOT of note-taking, but lately she's been giving us note worksheets which have been VERY helpful with taking notes, which was important because she used lecture stuff on the exam. I didn't notice a problem with her pronunciation
meh...not too bad, but far from good. the class itself is easy (the tests are damn near 100% based on the sample questions online!), but she's really boring and just doesnt teach well at all. she gives so much notes that you have no time to actually listen to what shes saying. comes off as a bit of a feminist too, which is....ughh
Got a B in the class but not worth taking her. Has a chip on her shoulder and like to brag about her one sentence mention of her in a 600 page textbook. Ridiculous amount of notes and you just end up teaching yourself the material.
extremely helpful if u go to her office hours 4 clarification. not too hard if u study + go to class
Possibly the worst course ive taken at UD. Each of her lecture slides have like 200+ words. Wound up walking out of numerous lectures due to ridiculous statements. Dont expect higher than 75 on tests if you dont attend class.
loves disasters. always finds away to talk about them. although, when we had a lecture on disasters, it was the only time she 1. made any sense, 2. didnt put me to sleep. shes got a real feminist vibe. overall its an okay class, although if you dont attend, you will fail. also, cant make powerpoint to save her life - its word for word from the book
She is very nice in class, always likes to initiate class discussions, and I am usually pretty interested in the material. Looks wise...she is tall, thin, with long blonde hair. She isn't hot but I find her pretty and graceful. Tends to brag about her disaster research center work though.
She is very interesting and to-the-point. Very nice and does not waste time. You won't do well if you don't go to class, but she knows what she's talking about, so that holds your attention even in long classes. You can tell she is passionate about her work, which always makes class 10x better.
just read exact words off of power point, a complete waste of time and excessively boring
very easy to approach. if you read and take notes in class you'll do fine. this course is a good intro but the class is so big you will need to motivate yourself
Her class isnt too hard, but not that easy. You HAVE TO attend class to know whats going on but the class is sooo boring. In the end you teach yourself everything anyway. You work hard, youll learn a lot in sociology but you'll probably never want to take another soci class ever again. Better than the bad profs but not a good one. Easy to approach
Great prof...If U go 2 class, read the chptrs and take the practice tests you'll do well.
This class is soooo boring! I really tried to go to class, but some how never made it/left before it was over. Her lectures come straight from the book.
Lectures are boring! If you're in the back, it's hard to stay awake; She reminded me of a high school guests speaker...you're paying attention until it's over and you realize you've been daydreaming; The class is mostly common sense (I slept through an entire unit, read the wrong 3 chapters in the book the day before and still got a B on the exam)
grow up you whiners!!!! it's a huge intro class, so what do you expect? there's a book so she's going to teach from it...that's the whole point...so of the stuff is boring, are your other intro classes any different?
It's a Intro class...like all the rest! Study and you will do fine.
Very nice woman who clearly knows what she's doing. Handouts are helpful.
i thought the exams were difficult. go to class and read the book. some of the movies we watched were pretty interesting. she knows what she is talking about, but i hated the class.
Gah! Disasters! Her lectures can get quite boring at times, but class is interesting. However, she ALWAYS talks about disasters. Very easy to get a B hard to get an A. All the guys in the class got B's/C's, every girl got an A; compounded with a feminist vibe and you never get exms back..makes me think she gives the girls better grades.
Except for the third one, I thought the exams were quite difficult for a intro level. But she drops the lowest score out of the first three so thats cool. Reading is important. I didn't like going to class, her lectures are kind of boring.
Professor Wachtendorf is the best professor I've ever had at this school...I've had her for multiple classes and she is also my advisor..my experience at UD would have not been the same without her and i highly reccomend taking anything she offers..anyone who had trouble didnt ask for help. -
She is a great professor..interesting lectures..exams are a bit difficult but I studied for most of them the night before and hardly read the chapters until that night and ended up with a B+. I always went to class.
Reading Guides make up the exams, skim through the readings enough to fill out the reading guides and an easy A
Dr. Wachtendorf was interesting and I didn't mind going to class. Tests were moderately hard, I skimmed the book and studied the notes and got B's on the exams. The only problem is this class is based solely on exams, so if you're not a good test taker it might not be the best class, but the material isn't too difficult. overall good class :)
She is a really good teacher, but her tests are impossible. She has a pretty annoying voice, but she knows what she's talking about. She expects you to go to class everyday and you will definately miss something if you don't go.
She is a really good teacher and definitely knows what she is talking about. Her tests are really hard and your grade is based on them. I learned a lot but it was a lot of studying. You have to go to class if you want to do well. Too much work for an intro class. If you're really interested in Sociology take her. If not, try to get Perez.
Lectures are incredibly boring, and almost completely based on the textbook. I enjoyed reading the book more than sitting in her class, yet tests have some info from lectures so attendance is mandatory...5 tests determine your grade. She's very opinionated (in a bad way). Went to class, read all the chapters, studied like crazy, and got a B.
This class can be really hard or really easy depending on what effort you put in. its alot of reading but DO IT. go to class and read and you'll do fine just alot of memorizing concepts
She is so interesting! Her lectures were very good and she shows really interesting movie clips. I still talk about her class to my friends. Anyone that does bad either didn't go to class or didn't put any effort in. Take good notes in class. A lot of her test q's come from notes. She drops your lowest exam score in the end! TAKE HER!
Really interesting class. She pushes you but in the end I learned an extreme amount of information. READ!!! I did perfect on everything else but the weekly quizzes killed me. Hard class so be prepared to put alot of effort into it. Really knows her stuff though.
she is pretty good. Really engaging and the lectures aren't boring at all. You reallyyyyyy have to read, alot of her test questions come from the book as well as lectures. She will put examples talked about in class on the exams so you have to go to class. Four exams and she drops the lowest one. Not too bad of a class.
You will learn about sociology. However, Dr. Wachtendorf is obsessed with herself and about as boring as they come. If you want to be lectured on what you just read in the book and then hear about all the wonderful things shes done and how important she is in her field--this class is for you
Class is fairly interesting and she uses a lot of real life example to help better relate the material. Definitely an interesting class and she is an easy professor to understand. Her test are not too hard, but studying is required in order to do well.
this teacher has a problem pronouncing words. this key is created in order to help you if you are taking this class. examples: resources=rezorces, figure=figgur, aggrictulture=eggriculture, jessica alba=jessica eylba... i hope this helps you
Tests are easy if you read the textbook and go to class more often than not. She explains things well.
Ohhhh Cannnaaadaaa. You gotta go to class (or at least get the notes) and DEFINITELY read and take notes on the text because its all the test questions. 3 exams, lowest dropped, final is just a normal chapter test so that's straight.. easy B/A.. take if you need an elective
The class is pretty boring, but you should still go because she does throw some questions on exams that refer to lectures and she doesn't put all of her slides online. You have to read the text book. Not an easy A but definitely an easy B.
I loved this class. It was very interesting and straightforward. She always related the material to real situations which made it easier to learn. The tests aren't too bad. They're all multiple choice. To do well I just went through the book and memorized all the definitions, charts, and lists, and then went over my notes.
You really do earn the DLE that this satisfies so make sure that you know you have to put effort and lots of time outside of class into this. Most importantly: try to stick as close to the timeline for the video as well so it's not a struggle and meet outside of class often. Learned a lot, although the quizzes were annoying. Shes nice but strict.
Without a doubt the hardest class I have ever taken in college, and I am typically not somebody to avoid difficult classes. The workload was enormous, the grading hard, and the class just not worth the effort. Unless you are seriously dedicated to doing research in the future do not take it.
I was moderately interested in the class prior, and I did learn a good deal of information. However, Wachtendorf is a VERY strict professor. The weekly quizzes are pretty hard and they are worth 35% of you grade. Then a 6 page research paper worth 35% that you won't get back before the final. Overall, if you are looking for easy this is NOT IT.
Tricia assigned books for class she didn't even read herself! That was evident when students were leading discussing on the assigned materials, and she would just make futile comments. Prof Aguirre was originally scheduled to teach the class. I know I would have enjoyed it much more with him teaching the course.
Be prepared to do a lot of work outside class. Participation and weekly reading tests along with the video project makes up your entire grade.
WARNING: INTENSE GROUP PROJECT ALERT. Got stuck with a mostly busted group for the project and invested over 50 hours by myself into the project. Wachtendorf is a good professor, very assistive and passionate. I would have really enjoyed this class if not for the video documentary that is 40% of the grade because the material was very interesting.
Class is based on mini exams and group project. Do the readings and you get at least a 4/5 on the exams. Group project is a video project. A lot more work than you might think, especially because your group will have slackers. Ended up doing a video almost all on my own spending every free moment working on it.
Class is very boring and she doesn't seem to know the subject well. She has a tough time trying to explain something that shouldn't be. She'll beat around the bush and talk so much more than she has to. I guess she likes hearing herself talk? I lost all interest in the class quickly and do not recommend taking this class with her.
You'll be fine as long as you read the book chapters and go to class. She expects a lot out of students and she doesn't post her lecture notes. The tests come from the book and her class notes, so you really have to stay on top of it. But she is nice and enjoys what she does.
I studied for each exam harder and harder each time, and barely improved. You have to make sure you know the lecture material and read the textbook in great detail. She will ask specific questions. Her lectures are boring and super long. Good things: she drops the lowest exam grade, final is NOT cumulative. No other assignments besides exams.
This class was terrible. Lectures were long and she talks so much. She seems like a nice lady but gives so much work. You have to read multiple chapters a week and study a lot. Your lowest exam grade is dropped. Super boring. I would try and get a different professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH WACHTENDORF. I went to class and studied, and I did well. There are 4 tests throughout the semester, the fourth is a non-cumulative that counts as the final and she drops the lowest of the first three. The world revolves around her and how lucky we are to have her research. Review sessions were a waste. Do the Connect.
Do NOT take with her. She is boring and self-centered. You need to thoroughly read each chapter in order to do well on the exams because she does not go over nearly enough material in class. Your grade is only three exams and she does not round up for your final grade which is stupid. I would definitely try to take another teacher if you can.
I enjoyed the class. Exams were easy if you attended, and did the practice exams online. She's very knowledgeable about the subject, and a very nice person.
Good professor. 4 non-cumulative exams (3 exams + final); 64 multiple choices each. Get most questions from "highly recommended questions." Online textbook you have to do readings from in order to get 2 extra points for each section between exam. Attendance isn't mandatory but she teaches things that will be on the exam that isn't in the textbook.
Attendance is not mandatory, nor are her lectures very helpful. She posts all the slides that you need to study and even without looking at them you can do very well on the tests. all of the readings are online through learnsmart, as long as you read the textbook (which is really clear) you will do well in the class. minimal effort to succeed.
Easy class. Professor is very clear and gives good examples on difficult concepts. Homework is easy. Just reading and multiple choice questions. All online. Lecture isn't required but I found it helpful in deepening my understanding of things. If you do the practice questions and the readings though, you're golden. Easy A.
This class is literally so easy. If you don't go to class, but do the reading expect an easy B, but if you go to class and listen it's an easy A. The homework takes forever, but you get points for doing it. I would recommend taking her as a teacher!
Sometimes lectures are important other times they aren't. Homework is weekly online questions. read through the chapters once and know terms and exams are easy. no extra credit, but homework you get points for just doing the homework which helps a lot.
Dr. Wachtendorf is a fantastic lecturer. She understands how to teach information in a way that will be remembered by creating connections to the real world and your own life. The textbook is online and if you read the chapters, do the chapter questions, and complete the reviews, you'll definitely get an A.
Professor Wachtendorf is extremely rude and passive aggressive in class. Lectures are long and boring. I would often skip class because I couldn't stand her. Will NEVER take her again.
The class itself is relatively easy, but she was just an overall rude person. Her lectures were decent, and some of the test questions come right from them, but her passive aggressiveness made me very reluctant to raise my hand in class. Many of her questions come right from the online homework, so it is very worth actually taking the time to do.
The tests are half complete memorization and half analyzing the article given. It's the same thing everytime and you take it 3 times. The video project is big and you travel to Chester County, but she's a good teacher and pretty renowned/smart. She also offers breaks since its 6-9 and sometimes lets out early. Not a SOCI major but fun regardless.
You only have three exams and a research paper. The exams are all short answer and essays. If you don't have almost the exact, word for word response she won't give you credit. She also won't help with the study guide, which you have to find all the answers yourself in readings/textbook. Also does not give enough time for exams. So stressful.
She really knows her stuff and is a great professor but the test is very unfair. She grades 87 short answer questions/ definitions word for word and it promotes memorization more than understanding which really ruined the course and made me feel like I could not study to understand but had to study to memorize
Prof Wachtendorf is a difficult grader, lecture-heavy, and slow to provide feedback. She assigns a lot of work and papers for the graduate level. Wachtendorf is slow to provide feedback even when the deadline for subsequent assignments that build on the feedback required is approaching.
The grading was based off of an interview, a paper, and the final exam. The whole exam and answers are given to you at the start of the semester and you have three attempts. I recommend studying very hard for the first or second one and being done. She is very strict on the answers being very close to hers though. Very respected in her field.
Dr. Wachtendorf is truly awesome. She is very knowledgable in her field. The class was heavy but very insightful. I would say it was an easy class because I cared about the stuff that was taught. Would not recommend to take it if you don't have an interest in disasters and society.
Avoid taking this class if it is not required. exams are fully written and you need to remember the terms VERBATIM (highest grade kept). It promotes memorization over actually learning, no point in paying attention to the lectures. However, she is understanding if you need anything
