Not very good. Stutters which makes learning bio words tough. Exam was too hard and he takes the course way too serious for a 1st year course.
This professor has a different teaching style than most 100-level courses. Students who wasted three months complaining about him are simply too lazy to become engaged with course material and actually work for their credit. Teaches concepts through extended case studies and current scientific literature. Take notes, think critically, get an A.
He had a very different teaching style which I had a hard time understanding. He wasted so much time on somethings and no time on others. His exams were brutal.
He has some sort of speech impediment which makes his lectures irate to attend, he also focuses on things that are unnecessary however he still manages to tie it into what it is we're supposed to be learning. If you pay attention to his lectures and read the textbook, his exams are fair. You can tell he what he's passionate about what he teaches.
His online quizzes were very difficult. His lectures were very, very boring. He often used very specific examples that were difficult to extract info from. Avoid his classes if you can! You will not learn a whole lot from it.
Wonderful prof, deeply concerned about his student's academic wellbeing. Keep up with the work, and attend all classes, and you will get a great mark!
Dr. Long is passionate about his work but stutters with nervousness from judging first years which he is bullied for. His teaching style is different- instead of lecturing about the material, he teaches examples to teach application about the assigned reading. His exams and quizzes are fair, asking for application instead of regurgitation of facts.
mainly uses examples; not very clear; mostly have to learn the textbook on your own for the course
He teaches through examples, so you'll have to adjust to his teaching style. I suggest reading the text before the lecture- you'll have a better experience in his class. The exam was easy and there were no surprises everything was covered in either lecture or the textbook. He is a very approachable prof - ask question if you don't understand.
He is very passionate about what he teaches, and that is necessary to enjoy a course. His teaching style is different from most profs, he expects you to read the textbook (as you should be) and then likes to use real life examples to make the class fun. Keep on top of things, and you will get an A.
Really nice professor. Teaches in a really interesting way and is very concerned about his students ! Very approachable.
The best prof ever.
Nice guy, easily approachable. Lectures very boring. He teaches through examples and encourages you to think. Midterm was easy includes lecture material not covered in textbook. Clickers worth a fair amount. Overall decent prof.
Absolutely great! Gave out buttons for participation, loved cats and tried to give great examples and more involvement while teaching the not always thrilling topics of evolution and plants.
Super nice guy, studders a bit but still mainly clear. He won't hesitate to help you and always points you towards other resources for other classes like the MAC etc...
Best prof I've had so far. He's hilarious and relatable and an overall amazing teacher. I loved biology before but he's made me love it ten times more.
Dr. Long is a fantastic professor who genuinely cares about his students and making sure that concepts are clearly explained and understood. He uses a lot of examples (mostly with cats) to demonstrate the concepts that are really beneficial in terms of clarity. Very nice and approachable man, take his courses if possible!
Tristan Long is a very sweet man who cares a lot about his students, but his lecture notes are very confusing and he spends too much time on examples and not enough on the textbook material.
Dr. Long tries really hard to make the boring content interesting, but it is very hard as he talks about unrelated, confusing real life concepts not related to the textbook. Very difficult to stay focused in class. Clicker questions worth a large part of mark and are very difficult.
Dr.Long is very funny and tries to make biology more interesting my using lots of analogies with cats. He is always willing to help his students and helped make biology more fun. His midterm was hard considering the time constraint and his exam was a tad tricky. He sometimes has trouble wording questions on midterm/exam. Overall good teacher:)
Nice teacher, helps a lot and explain stuff in a good manner.
Awesome prof. You can tell that he really cares about his students and the material he teaches.
Professor Long cares about his students and is very passionate with how he teaches. Unfortunately, he does not always get his point across through his elaborate examples he tries to use. He does not follow the textbook at all and his exams are very difficult as they do not reflect the material he focuses on in class.
Dr. Long is a good prof, however he has trouble getting his point across as his presentation skills are poor. He does every little bit he can to help but if you really want a good mark you have to go to lecture and teach yourself.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFS BY FAR!!!! I loved him!!! He made his lecture slides easy, if you didn't understand something he gave more then enough opportunities to go and get it clarified with him. Just can't say enough good things about him, one of the best profs Laurier has to offer.
I had Dr. Long for BI111 in first year and didn't love that course. When I took this course however my thoughts on his teaching strategies completely changed. The guy is hilarious, helpful and makes all his lectures available online. The course is very self-directed and you will get out of the course what you put in. Need to understand stat theory.
After barely passing BI110, I was NOT excited for BI111. However, Dr Long's lectures are engaging and interesting, and I actually enjoyed going to class, and left feeling like I learnt something. There are alot of quizzes and clicker questions, but each individual one isn't worth too much. He also posts all slides and audio recordings of lectures.
Dr Long really wants his students to do well and is willing to drop low marks to help the students average. He is kind and funny beware his clicker marks and some exit quizzes are scary but most of the info comes from in class lectures.
Dr. Long doesn't have the best lectures, but it's not really his fault because the content of this course is extremely dull. He does give students lots of opportunities to excel though. Quizzes and clickers are worth a lot (about 28% of final grade) and are just give away marks. He also replaces the midterm mark if you do better on the final.
Dr. Long ran a great biostatistics course I learned so much! There are no tests or final exam its just assignments so as long as you listen in class or watch the videos he posts online you'll do great!
Dr. Long is an amazing professor. BI111 was my favorite course. The great thing was that he posted his lectures online and they were extremely helpful to listen to for exam preperation. Best professor at Laurier.
Great Prof! So helpful any time you have questions, screencasts and podcasts are everything. Even if you forget something in class, he posts everything and more onto mylearningspace. One of my favourite profs by far!
At first, I wasn't sure how I was feeling, but it is now the highlight of myls. He genuinely cares and gives lots of options to get good marks, from clickers and quizzes every week, to matching our mark on our midterm and final if we do better on the latter.
Dr. Long is an amazing professor. He truly cares about his students and their learning in his class. He gives a lot of opportunities to get good marks in his class, and is helpful if people are struggling. He encourages use of his office hours and genuinely wants everyone to succeed.
Biostats is one of the hardest courses I have ever taken at WLU. If youre not statistically inclined (like myself) youll be working very hard to pass. Dr. Long is a very sweet guy, very willing to help you if you take initiative. He posts screencasts of his work and thats amazing. Textbooks arent mandatory but are VERY helpful.
literally had him for one lecture and i already love him
Amazing prof! Really great person! genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well and gives lots of oppertunities to do well and get marks! Honestly really great prof and really refreshing to have a prof like this
Awesome guy! He gave us the opportunity to change our midterm mark to the same as our final exam mark if we did better! Make sure to read his clicker review and test reviews, TONS of the same questions as on the tests.
Great person. Really cares about student achievement. Unfortunately his lessons do not line up with the textbook readings so lessons become hard to follow.
Dr. Long is a fantastic professor! He puts so much personality into his lectures and is clearly very passionate about his field. Weekly quiz questions can be wordy and a little tricky, as are his clicker questions. Be prepared to do regular textbook readings though. Would definitely take his class again.
He's cool and makes lectures interesting but he gets carried away with too many examples and strays away from content. His clicker questions and online quizzes are way too difficult tho.
I absolutely love Dr. Long and would highly recommend taking biostats if youre interested in going into quantitative research. He teaches you how to learn R every other class and is super helpful for the reports (think excess office hours and theyre always busy). That being said, the reports are a lot of work to write up, but are super helpful!
Very nice person but is not very good at teaching the material. His Lecture slides are not very helpful when it comes to writing the exam. You should just read the textbook because it is very hard to understand what he is saying in class if you don't read the text. His clicker questions are very difficult and his exit quizes are as well.
Dr. Long is an amazing professor, he truly cares for his students and their success. Dr. Long is very understanding and accommodating. His lectures are always very engaging and interesting. His quizzes and clicker questions can be very tricky, but his exams are often not that bad. He usually does not cover the basics, so read the textbook prior!
Dr. Long is honestly such a nice and genuine human being. His lectures are sometimes hard to understand because of the extensive language he uses. But aside from that his exams are really easy and he is so accommodating.
He's a cool guy who really cares about his students. Lectures are good, sometimes slightly confusing. Midterm was very hard but I mostly didn't study. He does offer to make your midterm grade your final grade if you do better on final. He's honestly a fun guy and tries his best to help everyone understand. Especially helpful when moved online.
Dr Long is the greastest human. He really truly cares for his students. I would highly highly recommend Dr Long for every one. He makes lectures interactive and seems as though he gets a genuine joy from the content. He truly should be praised for being one of the greatest profs the Laurier has to offer. Dr Long should run the world.
Dr. Long is hands down the most caring, genuine and accommodating prof Ive ever had. He really wants to help you learn and understand content. He holds so many office hours and is so responsive to emails. He went above and beyond this pandemic to ensure student success! Easily my favourite prof at Laurier. Take a course with him if you can!
Dr. Long is an absolute angel! This year with the GRT strike and COVID-19 has been so difficult for everyone and he absolutely took this into account. He is so passionate about what he's teaching and genuinely wants you to understand the material and do well. Many opportunities to do well. The exit quizzes were a bit difficult at times.
Long was a great prof. He really cares for students and understands any concerns we may have. His tests could be quite hard but he gives you a chance to change your midterm mark if you do better on the final. He has exit and entrance quizzes that can help boost your mark
I had Dr. Long as my supervisor for my directed studies and it is hands down the best decision I've ever made. He's caring, supportive and so intelligent. Dr. Long is one of the kindest and most helpful profs I have ever met. If you have any interest in drosophila melanogaster, he's a solid choice to supervise you. Overall, he's pretty fly.
he is a very caring professor. during the covid pandemic he was very understanding and helped all of us with his video lectures and giving us extra time to complete assignments. participation marks are easy but you have to go to class to get the marks.
Dr. Long was super sweet and accommodating to everyone during the start of the pandemic. He made class super accessible and genuinely cared about everyone's well being.
Such a caring professor. Always gives lots of feedback and takes the time to make sure questions are answered. He gave many extensions and was very thoughtful with deadlines given the current online situation.
LOVE professor Long. He cares so much about his students and puts so much time and effort into his lectures. Best prof I've had. So unintentionally funny too. 10/10 recommend. Take his classes.
Dr. Long is literally the most adorable prof i've ever had. The pandemic has made first year really hard but he has tried his best to make the class as easy and as fun possible for us!
The sweetest professor in Biology, but as a teacher he lacks clarity and his explanations can be pretty long-winded.
Good guy. Funny as hell sometimes. Overall pretty solid prof but his tests are hard so be sure to do some extra studying. By no means does he want you to do bad so if you put in any sort of work you should be able to do well, but it is biology so dont lack too much.
Best prof ever! Has a fantastic online format in which he goes over the weeks content in a series of videos and then makes himself available for discussion and questions during lecture time. Lots of quizzes so nothing is weighted too heavily, and he drops your lowest marks. Adorable and funny!
A very solid prof. Tests can be pretty hard, but hes fair. The course itself was not really boring, its a shame I couldnt have him for another more interesting course. Highly recommend.
I hate to do this as Dr. Long is probably the most caring and accommodating professor in Bio. The materials he prepares are fun to watch, but hold little real content. He talks a lot and in the end one has to depend on the textbook to learn something.
He is probably one of the most caring profs in Laurier. Although the material is a bit confusing, he tries to explain it to the best of his abilities. Even during covid, he tried to do little activities in his lecture content to show analogies and be more clear. The ones rating him lower probably did not do enough work. Overall, 10/10 amazing prof
Slow on replying to emails, otherwise super amazing. He gives pre & post quizzes for chapters to keep you stay on track. His midterm and finals are open book and he will replace your midterm mark with your final if you improve. He will remove questions from examinations if many do bad, essentially boosting mark by lowering total mark on assessments
AT first, I was annoyed that I was failing his exit quizzes because they were too hard, but I realized you have to watch his lecture videos. Most of his midterm/exam/quiz questions are from there. I managed to get an A because I made my notes from his videos. Great prof!
Makes lectures so interesting because he's very interactive with them, makes a lot of cat jokes, does activities to demonstrate concepts and just makes them entertaining but informational to watch. Difficult to keep up sometimes as the lecture "notes" are what he verbally says. Quizzes every week to make sure everyone's on track. Very nice prof
Dr. Long made BI393 really enjoyable despite how using R code was quite new. There were mini assignments, 2 medium and 2 major assignments for this class + provides tons of feedback to improve for future tasks. I took ST231 previously so a lot of the coding was familiar and not too bad to do. Using his office hours and asking for help paid off.
Best prof at Laurier.
Really engaging lectures and truly cares about the wellbeing of his students. The class is mainly graded on the midterm and final and in my opinion they were kind of difficult, so if you don't do well on it you can't really make up your mark elsewhere. Most of the material is pulled from the textbook so you have to do a lot of reading.
He's awesome. Extremely helpful!!
Really cares about his students and does his best to make lectures engaging. Textbook stuff is required and it's quite long but that's really the only gripe. Entrance/Exit quizzes are easy enough, midterm/final also not super difficult and he dropped the lower of the two marks. Great guy!
I struggled a lot in science courses throughout highschool, but needed them in order to pursue my dream degree. Used to have a negative attitude towards science courses, but many of the profs, including Dr Long, were extremely helpful, had a passion for teaching, and made lectures engaging.
love this man
Learning objectives every week that take so long. Replaces midterm grade with exam, if you do better on the exam. Great teacher, but he rambles a lot and you might get sleepy during class. I didn't even attend class more than 80% of the time. Make sure to do the learning objectives and you'll be fine. Go to his midterm and exam review sessions.
gem of a human. tries so hard, cares about his students, super interactive, pulls out plant models and does experiments to keep us engaged. Offered recorded, in-class AND audio lectures, like what? amazing! fair exams and quizzes. love him so much. Would take any course he teaches. easy to do well, just requires some effort as its bio after all.
I know it's been written several times before, but one cannot overlook how invaluable a caring and kind professor is who actually cares about his students and goes the extra mile every. single. time. Worth his weight in gold.
I LOVE Dr. Long. By far the best teacher I've had in my 4 years here. Cares for his students and always gives great feedback and opportunities to improve. He always keeps his students best interests and well-being in mind. He makes his lectures engaging with his great sense of humour and I would 100% recommend that everyone take a class with him!
Dr. Long is one of the most caring professors at Laurier. He puts a lot of effort and cares about student success! His lectures and explanations are quite clear and he was always more than willing to provide any additional help to clear up confusion. This course is very useful and I recommend any biology student to take this course!
very disorganized
Dr long was by far the sweetest prof I had in first year. His lectures were fun and his tests were fair. As long as you take detailed notes you will do just fine!
good prof
He is very funny and obsessed with cats!!!!! I have seen far to many cats in one week on lecture slides and 90% of clicker questions have involved cats. he is very kind and funny. Lecture slides are confusing, lack content, and disorganized. he rambles all lectures.
Lectures can be quite disorganized and not very helpful. Exams are way too lengthy for the short allocated time and questions have way too many options, sometimes with grammatical errors. Should curve exams if this is done or decrease questions on exams.
Exams are way too lengthy and text heavy. Needs to curve or decrease questions. Not a bad professor though and a nice person but lectures are not very helpful.
Funny prof with a good sense of humor, but the midterm exam was way too long for the time slot and way too many options on mc questions.
Funny and spends a lot of time with you during office hours.
Exams are way too long for the given amount of time and questions are too lengthy.
Tests are very very long and questions are extremely time consuming
Exams have way too many questions for the given time span. Question format can be unorganized at times.
Questions in quizzes and exams are written in a confusing way and have too many options.
Lectures can be quite disorganized and not very helpful. Exams are very long and difficult, with short allocated time. There are grammatical errors in both lectures and quizzes. Lecture component strays far from textbook and is often confusing. It is expected that going into lecture you already know and understand the entire chapter of the textbook
Lecture is not helpful at all, very disorganized. Overall in this course I had no clue what I was to focus on as lecture strayed extremely far from textbook, not clear structure for what was and was not going to be tested, and often rambles in lecture. Not surprised if the class average is below 50. Brutal.
He's a good prof, he just has a lot of photos on his slides and not a lot of text so you kinda have to show up to class. His examples are really really good though, he engages the class a lot and even gives away cute little pins. He's helpful when it comes to not understanding stuff during his office hours, weekly quizzes really prepare for exam.
His slides barely have any text and are kinda hard to follow. Lovely person, he is very positive and tries to keep you engaged. Final was overwhelming but not impossible
Conveys information very successfully, uses many in-class examples to deepen understanding. Good sense of humor. Easily the most considerate/caring professor at Laurier. Lectures are made accessible in person/online. Weekly quizzes thoroughly prepare students for final evaluations. Will be taking his courses again whenever possible. 10/10!!!!
I will start by saying he is caring and passionate about what he teaches. However, I felt it was EXTREMELY difficult to learn content from his lectures, they were example heavy, and had barely any text on the slides. Look at the learning goals he posts, as there are specific examples you will need to know for the exams, and they are listed there.
Tristan is the best! He is so funny and attentive in the lectures, makes everything very engaging.
Dr. Long is the most caring and down to earth professor I've ever had in my four years of University. Offers plenty of office hours to provide extra help to students, and goes the extra mile to help each student succeed. Everyone should take one of Dr. Long's classes, you will not regret it as he's the best professor ever!
Initially, I wasn't a fan of his lectures—they were funny, but I didn't feel I learned much. After the midterm, I realized to well you have to fully understad lecture content and learning objectives. The midterm and final are lecture-based, and while content-heavy, it prepares you for upper-year courses. It's challenging but doable with effort.
his lectures were difficult to follow and you had to rely on the textbook; his lectures did not have any information at all and they were all over the place.
He's pretty cool. He finds ways to demonstrate processes in some fun ways. But also I'm pretty sure he's a furry. Not a criticism, just that wearing dog ears and telling the class to find a random student and "mate with them" is a bit telling lol.
He is extremely caring and sweet. He gives out pins for participation and candy for his office hours. He puts lots of cat pictures and memes into his lecture slides to make people laugh and hopefully enjoy his slides more. I wish he put more words into his slides, I had a tough time focusing on only his speaking. He is happy to answer questions too
Very caring and kind. Some of his lectures are funny and interesting. While the slides are not very informative, listening to him does the trick. There's also many other resources other than the slides to learn from like videos. Midterm was kind of difficult but open book.
very hard to understand and hear him, very confusing way to teach
He is good but can be confusing sometimes...
Dr. Long was honestly one of the most caring and sweetest professors. He truly cared about his students' success, and the videos he provided to complement the lectures were extremely helpful.
Very nice guy, cares a lot about the content he teaches. Everything but the exam was done either online or in tutorial, nothing too difficult. But there is not much content on the actual slides themselves so you'll have to rewatch about every lecture over again to study for the exam, which is a bit frustrating.
I may have a biased review because I wasn't really interested in the content of this course, however it was a mandatory course for me so I made the best of it. Tristan Long is very caring about his students and wants us all to do very well. Where I struggled was with his teaching style, his lectures were hard to follow and had lots of pictures.
Dr long was super cool and was passionate about the material and the success of students. easy to get 100% for 30% of the final grade (clickers, entry/exit quizzes). exams are not too hard either but are wordy and requires memory. only thing is that his lecture slides are difficult to navigate.
His lectures are very hard to follow as he relies very heavily on examples and acting things out. His slides do not have any useful information on them, so be prepared to read the text and use the learning objectives he provides per chapter. There are 2 online quizzes a week and a take-home online midterm, and the final is cumulative.
There is a lot of weekly work for this class but he is amazing and super nice. His midterm was difficult however since he made it a very complex and detailed one. Make sure to do the readings he posts each week since they are actually helpful for lecture
Although his lectures were difficult to follow along, the midterm and exam were very fair and the tutorials give a really good mark boost too. Just have to study a lot on your own time, but as long as you know the content you should be fine
He's so present and caring, but unfortunately it didn't make up for his awful lectures and quizzes. He is just so difficult to follow and you are expected to know and understand the entire textbook as well as everything in his lectures. if bio isn't one of your strongest classes and you can't learn without a good teacher, avoid!
Very reading heavy. Lectures by him are impossible to understand unless you pre read the book. This is the infamous GPA destroyer for all science students, but a high mark is possible if you put in the (endless amount of) work. Dr. Long himself is very helpful and nice and genuinely cares about seeing you succeed.
The final exam was hard tbh it was very long (70 questions) and it was cumulative with not much time to study. There was entrance and exit quizzes every week which helped boost mark and Iclickers. The midterm was online (only one midterm). He wasn't a bad prof, but it would've been better if he did 2 midterms and not cumulative exam instead.
Dr. Long was a mediocre professor. His lectures were very disorganized and hard to follow. This made it hard to take meaningful notes. He did try and make some lectures interactive to help students understand the topics which made it somewhat easier.
BI111 is a difficult class, studying for this final was painful. I didnt think I would feel joy again. Tips: do the readings (important), study weekly. Not a bird course. Lectures were HARD to follow if did not do TB reading beforehand.Long is a compassionate and intelligent prof, posts lecture vids on youtube with chances to boost grade :)
He's so nice and funny, lectures are really easy to follow. I didn't open the textbook once, just took notes from his covid lectures and was able to do great. He also makes the content really interesting and talks about cats alot!
Super nice and funny but it's impossible to catch up in lectures and his slides are all images so hard to make notes of every thing he says (he does record it but it means you have to go over that again to even have any notes down) also the textbook is USELESS even for mindtaps
Dr. Long is one of the best profs I've had. He truly cares and uses entrance/exit quizzes and iClickers to keep you on track. His lectures can be dry, but just listen to what he's saying in class/in recordings & don't bother with the textbook or slides. I bombed the midterm, but he let the final replace it, and I got an A+. Super fair prof.
Dr. Long was genuinely one of the best professors I have ever had. He had the genuine passion and talent for teaching that lured students to learn more and be actually interested in the course lectures. Wasn't a difficult marker from what I remember. 1000% would take his class again!
Honestly not sure what to say about him. He is very nice I just found his slides a bit difficult to follow especially when it came to studying for my in-person final exam (that he miraculously wanted to bring back) I digress tho. The clicker was quite thought-provoking and his entrance and exit quiz were challenging at times.
