By far the best math professor/teacher I've ever had. Do the homework and you'll be fine. Puts the notes online for each of his sections but I would highly recommend attending lectures because he is very good at explaining the reasoning behind the solution to any given problem. Very funny and interesting all around. Would definitely recommend.

He's such a fun professor to have for math. He explained the material really well and if you had questions, he was more than happy to help. He always cracked jokes during the math lecture and it made math a lot more enjoyable. Also, in my opinion, he looks like Jim Carrey.

Whalen is probably one of the best math teachers I have had in a while. He is an amazing lecturer. He can be slower paced, but is very thorough. The tests are very similar in style the the quizzes.(Short and straightforward, similar to in class examples) Do the homework, go to the lectures and make sure you understand the quizzes and you will pass.

Great professor! He explains everything very clearly and he's really funny too. He posts his lecture notes but it's better to go to class, and he has quizzes the same day every week. He gave us excellent reviews for the exam, it is very hard not to do well! I felt perfectly prepared. My only issue was forgetting to do some of the online homework!

Most fun professor I've taken at UTD, has a great attitude and you can tell he enjoys what he teaches. His exams and quizzes are very similar to the homework and he sets you up to do well as long as you put in some effort. Attendance isn't really necessary but listening to lecture is actually worth it.

Doctor Whalen gives a very informative lecture though can be slow sometimes. He posts his notes online also and doesn't take attendance so it's not always necessary to go to class if you've taken calc before. He'll try to answer any question and try to be as helpful as he can be. He knows the dread of math and tries to keep the class light hearted.

This guy is a killer good professor. He will elaborate every single little detail over a lesson and will happily answer any concerns or questions given to him. He also chronically checks up on the class to see if he is making sense. This man even helped on another math class I was struggling on. The list could go on, but just take this professor.

Whalen is a really good speaker. He is entertaining and charismatic. The notes are given online (blank and filled out) and he explains every concept in a simple way that makes the course really easy to follow along. I can't recommend this professor enough, the course material may be hard but if you can take it with him it'll be much easier to bare.

Calc II was definitely a pain but he will do his best to pull you through it in the simplest way possible. He posts his notes online so if you didn't pick up everything in lecture you can always go back. Great teacher overall and will definitely take another class with him if I get the opportunity.

Tristan is a great Math teacher. I am bad at math but his lectures make Probability and Statistics topics fairly easy to understand for the test. There are VERY helpful keys attached to the tests so you don't spend all of your study time only memorizing formulas. Rather you can work through the review problems which really help u prepare for exams

Great Prof !! Quizzes are pretty similar to HW and class problems. Exams are little harder than quizzes, but easy if you know the material. Does a decent job of explaining topics in simplest form. I wish I had taken him for other classes such as Calc I and II.

One of the few professors who is undoubtedly a great lecturer, good testgiver, a fair grader, and an awesome guy all around. It also helps that his own undergrad days were not too long ago, so he's a very understanding teacher as well. Do the test reviews and the quizzes diligently, especially the test reviews,and you'll do great.

This guy is a great lecturer and patient instructor. Very clear and concise when teaching, even on such a hard topic. I just wish he gave more opportunities for students to rework exams to learn material or graded less exam heavy.

There are about 3 tests total which tend to be based somewhat on his reviews given (not entirely though). THQ's can be involved and difficult but the online homework is easy.

Professor Whalen does a great job in teaching the material so that you understand it. Make sure you really understand the concepts inside and out before taking the tests, because he does test you on the specifics. You have to earn the A, but if you study the notes and the practice problems, you'll be fine.

Took Professor Whalen for CS 3341 and he is a very good instructor. Feels like he really cares and knows the subject by heart, and his lectures are not very boring. The subject as a whole is pretty tough on it's own, and he is also a tough grader. His exams are not too easy, they really test your knowledge on the course material. Have to earn an A

I failed my prob and stats course at the community college I took it at last semester. I was lost the whole entire semester. This semester though, with Dr. Whalen, was a breeze. Not because the class is easy, but because Whalen knows how to teach. He made every point clear as can be. Legendary man. 10/10.

I went into this class with very little knowledge on statistics. However, through this professor, I ended up enjoying the class a lot more than I thought I would. He makes a lot of pop culture references, like relating statistics to Pokemon, which just draws you into the class even more. To top it all off, he is an amazing speaker and teacher.

best professor out there for prob and stat. Makes concepts extremely clear. Tests are super easy : 100, 98, 95 were my test scores (without curve). Just do the exercises, webworks and weekly assignments 2-3 days before the test and you'll ace this class. Easy A for sure.

whalen is amazing at what he does, and it's obvious he's very passionate about it as well. he makes complicated concepts as clear as possible, and he provides more than enough practice material to prepare for his exams. i would take him again in a heartbeat for another class if possible.

I had this class as a pre-requisite but I enjoyed it more than my core graduate subjects. An amazing professor with unbelievable teaching skills. Professor Whalen is a good statistics lecturer and overall is a genuinely nice person. He has his own notes for each chapter that students can view online. He is thorough and focuses only on what he will quiz or test you over. He also follows the book fairly closely so have the book to at least do the practice problems. You'll do just fine.

Whalen is a swell dude who sure loves his wife. He calls her "pookie". His stats class is fair. Study the notes for the quizzes and tests and you should be fine. His exams are roughly the same as the quizzes- he doesnt throw any hard balls. However, he does seem to get irritated kinda easy lol. Take him if you can

He is a good professor but at times goes too fast. The homework and exams are certainly doable but I would recommend reading the notes multiple times to fully understand the concepts. For tests, redo the homeworks and problems from the notes multiple times and you should be able to do well in the class.

Funny professor. The textbook is just his notes in elearning which are pretty good. He also has practice problems and solutions for each chapter and each exam in elearning so if you want practice they're there. As long as you do the homeworks and go over the review, you should be fine on the exams. There are some homework questions that are bonus.

I cannot praise this professor enough. He is one of very few professor at UTD that can teach and makes his lectures interesting and funny. If you take his class, an A only requires you to go to class and listen, do and understand the homework, and lastly do the exam reviews. You can see that this professor cares about his students.

Excellent teacher. Great lectures. A quiz every week and a homework every week are the only grades in the class. All of the homework points combined are of equal weight to the points from one quiz. Not hard. Take him and enjoy.

I LOVED taking my probabilty and statistics class with Professor Whalen. He was funny and broke the online class tension often, was super knowledgeable about the content, and provided lots of examples and formulas to help us with the content. There was Homework and a quiz every week but it was never impossible, and were never very long.

Might give my favorite lectures at the school, funny, engaging, and most importantly effective. Homework was very consistently assigned, not too long, and very good for driving in the key points and helping you practice. Weekly quizzes were exactly like the homework, extremely easy and quick, but not /really/ cumulative.

Professor Whalen's lectures were both easy to understand, and engaging. He also uploaded detailed notes to eLearning. This course had short, open note, weekly quizzes instead of exams, which were all very easy. There were occasional bonus questions as well. The weekly homeworks were not too long, and are helped prepare me for the quizzes. Easy A.

Dr. Whalen truly made online learning more bearable. Not only did he cut us a lot of slack by not having any exams at all but he also made his quizzes straight forward with no trick questions thrown in there. Overall a very energetic professor who truly cares for his students well being and and awesome lecturer.

Dr. Whalen modified the course format during the pandemic. There are about 13-14 quizzes and 14 online homework assignments weighted equally. Both homework and quizzes were generously easy if you attended lectures and read through his supplemental notes that he posts. He definitely cares about student learning and accessible during office hours.

There are A LOT of good things about professor Whalen. The course was super well organized. The lectures were fun because the professor made jokes about the topics he was teaching. This class does not have any exams, just weekly quizzes. The quizzes are doable as long as you keep up with the weekly homework and lecture. He was super supportive.

This was one of the most enjoyable classes I had this semester. Dr. Whalen is energetic and gives great lectures with detailed examples. In the online environment, no tests, only quizzes & hw. Only downside is all quizzes are cumulative, so you will need to refresh on earlier concepts. His lectures are great. Professor Whalen is the most energetic and charismatic professor I've ever had at UTD. He's very knowledgeable in his field and conveys information clearly with solid explanations and examples. I took him last semester in an online class and, he was definitely my favorite professor I've ever taken here. He's very cohesive in his lectures, and doesn't assign any exams. Provides his own lecture notes he uses to teach, the notes he goes over in class, and previous resources from the past semesters. It honestly takes more effort to fail this class than to pass. Topics can be hard but he guides you through it

To be fair, I did have prior statistics experience, but this class was so free. I thought I would scrape by with a low A+, but his grading criteria was even more generous than expected, so I got it by a comfortable margin. Having only quizzes and homework made the class very stress free for me, no exams or projects. He's funny too.

The best choice for CS3341. I went through the class without seeing him or hearing his voice, but his notes and quick and helpful email responses were more than enough for me to understand the material. My grade was based evenly on HW and 5 quizzes; the HW is easily doable especially with his email responses, and quizzes have > 20% extra credit.

11 homeworks & 5 quizzes. No tests. Quizzes were manageable if you pay attention to his lectures. Doing the HWs helps you prepare for about 70% of the quiz. Each quiz is a 1/6 of the grade and the HWs combined are a 1/6 of the grade. Overall, a solid choice. Pay attention in class and you will get an A in class. Take him as your first choice.

Great professor, pretty easy class. Interesting lecture, explains concepts well and encourages class discussion. Assigns homework every couple of weeks which takes between 1 and 2 hrs if you attended the lectures and paid attention.. 5 quizzes across the semester (no midterm or final exams) which were pretty easy and similar to the hw.

One of the best profs I've ever taken. His lectures are incredibly well structured and make the course genuinely fun. Even if you skip them, he makes it very easy to catch up. HWs were well structured. There were five quizzes, each equally weighted, and they weren't too bad. He is also a very generous grader. Everything is curved.

Dr. Whalen is a good professor and you'll get an A as long as you attend and participate in lectures. He is lenient with grading and curves according to how each section did on the quiz. Quizzes are open-note, but are difficult because they're open-note. The questions are extremely similar to how he presents them in class, so attendance is needed.

The best stats/prob professor you could take. Such an energetic dude, going to class was honestly worth it. The material is not too bad as long as you spend some time studying. My section had 5 quizzes, which were not bad at all.

The best choice for prob/stats and a true gem to UTD! I took him online during a COVID semester and he's a great lecturer who gives countless examples and has such a passion for stats. His homeworks were like lecture problems and he gave quizzes every few weeks with a good number of bonus problems on each of them.

Definitely one of the best profs I've had at UTD. He's pretty engaging and keeps lectures pretty light and conversational. Certainly helps that the material isn't particularly difficult either, especially if you took AP Stats in high school.

Gives a new homework every week and they are pretty long so my suggestion is to start them at least 2 days before they are due. Study hard for the quizzes because they are kind of hard. That being said, he meets the heavy courseload with informative lectures and engages with the class. I would say take him if you get the chance because he knows what he's doing.

The definition of a FANTASTIC LECTURER! Dr. Whalen explains Stats in a way that anyone can understand, even people like me who have NEVER taken a stats class! He walks us through step by step on how to solve problems and shows us everything we need to be successful! Quizzes can be hard and he does move fast sometimes so be sure to clarify asap!

He gives his "Whalen Notes," which are summarized notes for what you need to know. Furthermore his homework is delivered via eLearning, and really prepares you for the quizzes. You don't even really need to attend class, just study the notes and pay attention on the homework. Very good class organization.

This was a statistics class so it can get boring very quickly. Prof. Whalen knows this and tries his hardest to make the class a little interesting. Take good notes. It's primary resource to understand concept. He may write fast, but you can too. If unsure, email him. He is very keen to details in replying emails. Take effort to solve and understand the homework questions. He makes all questions and there are many details of learning within the question.

Prof. Whalen is one of the best professors that I ever had. His knowledge and passion for the subject is amazing. He is very organized in his teaching, notes, and homework. Prof. Whalen's Prescriptive Analytics class is not too much pressure. His lectures are amazing, and the 2 closed-book tests he conducted were very simple. He gives lots of homework, but it really helps you get a practical understanding of the course. His approach is very organized, and he grades fairly. It was easy to get a good grade.

Professor Whalen is an engaging lecturer who breaks down complex concepts well. The course workload is manageable with diligent note-taking and regular visits to office hours. Unstuck study proved helpful for supplementary practice alongside the textbook.

If you're bad at math, then I suggest going to office hours or asking questions in class if you get lost. Whalen is very friendly and humorous. He's a good professor that focuses on learning by example after explaining a concept. You need to come to class and take notes if you want to succeed. Hard content, but well taught to be easy.

He explains complex concepts very thoroughly. Pay attention because it's easy to get lost. He encourages questions from students before moving on. He adds humor to his lectures. There are 4 quizzes, weekly homework, and no final exam. If you're ok at math, you'll be fine. If not, just ask questions or go to office hours. He'll be happy to help you.

He does a fantastic job and makes the course really interesting. The lectures are entertaining, the HW given is decently easy if you pay attention in his class, and the "quizzes" are always super bare bones and test actual knowledge instead of memorization.

One of the best professors I've ever had! He's incredibly easy to understand, genuinely caring, and by far the most responsive professor I've ever encountered. Always quick to reply and willing to help—made the course so much smoother and less stressful. Highly recommend!

Dr. Whalen's an amazing stats professor who cares about the success of his students, I highly recommend him! Aside from his accessibility outside of class, his lectures aligned perfectly with the assignments and quizzes, there were no left-field questions that would trip up students. I hope I can take him for Prescriptive Analytics in the future!

Dr. Whalen is an intelligent teacher who interacts with students in class. Though I do not have a math background, he goes into depth about the derivations of formulae. He gives a lot of homework to make sure everybody "excel"s. The textbook, authored by Cliff Ragsdale, is excellent for the class. I cannot recommend his class enough.

Great Professor, explained topics well and as long you put effort you will get a great grade. Be sure to do the homework on time.

He is BY FAR the best option for OPRE 3340. Not only does he explain the material in a way that is easy to understand, but he is more than happy to help with any questions you might have outside of class. He applies very generous curves on all his quizzes and offers partial credit as well. I STRONGLY recommend him if you're bad at math like me.

Homework online 40%, 4 quizzes 60%. I thought quizzes 1 and 2(linear algebra) were the easiest. You definitely have to go to class with prof whalen and actually pay attention. hes very nice, and its easier to follow along in class than read the more minimal notes posted. Hes funny and approachable, and the homework questions have multiple attempts.

Whalen is a brilliant professor who makes what could be a monotonous subject interesting. Be prepared for a LOT of excel use. No textbook needed and attendance isn't mandatory but necessary to understand the subject. My biggest complaint is that Professor Whalen focused a lot on concept and often neglected the practical/hands-on practice.

Best professor ever! He is very caring and he gives very generous curves on the exams. He's also very enthusiastic about class. If you attend his classes, it's very easy to get an A.

Whalen is very enthusiastic while teaching, which is reflected in his lectures. Attendance isn't required, but needed because his lecture slides are vague (take notes!). Weekly homework. His lectures are mostly conceptual knowledge, while his homework is Excel-heavy, so you have to self-learn a lot of the Excel stuff. Overall, great teacher!

Dr Whalen is the best professor at UTD he truly cares about his students, and the course. His lectures are very engaging and useful. Exams a tough but he curves them, and the homework is quite easy. You should probably learn Excel before this class since it is used heavily.
