My favorite class yet at MJC. Instructor is interesting and accessible. The biggest surprise is my own improvement in the course. Do the work. I'm signing up for him again next semester.
Amazing teacher, his lectures are great and he's pretty funny. He's understanding and lenient, but the work is still hard. At least two essays per week. I love his class and would definitely take him again.
Professor Hassell is a great Professor. He will get you to think outside of the box and is the new wave of teachers that will be the standard of teaching. He is easy to talk to and gives great lectures. He gets in depth with the philosophers. He will have you look at life in a different way and it will resonate with you. I highly recommend him.
The best teacher i have had my entire life. Hilarious and so passionate. i swear this man is wise way beyond philosophy as well, you can talk to him about politics, english, etc. Extra credit comes often. An amazing person and professor. A lot of writing and reading, but that came with the class. if philosophy is your thing, you will love him and this class.
I love him. Love.
Let's just say, AMAZING!!! Tristin has intrigued me tremendously and he makes his classes fascinating to attend. Hopefully you get one of his classes where you can interact with him freely. He is an absolute blast to converse with. I would definitely take him again. Cheers to adding an astounding teacher to MJC
Smart cool guy. The readings are tough but he will help you really get it. He expects a lot but gives an almost overwhelming amount of chances to get it right. Thank god for extra credit. Lectures are really good.
I surprised myself with how well I did in this class and how much I enjoyed it. Doctor Hassell made me want to get better than a pass and I did. I will be signing up for his other classes for sure.
i enjoyed the class. tristan was very helpful when i started to fall behind in the class and encouraged me to not drop. i'm very happy that i stuck around because I ended up doing well and the lectures and class discussions were fascinating
Best teacher I have ever had. Tough class but learned more in this class than all other classes combined.
Professor Hassell gives so much extra credit that you can end up with 120% at the end of the semester. He is very respected and looked up to and is always available when needed outside of class. He does make you read and write a lot but, you come out learning a lot more than expected. His lectures are very in depth and you can tell he is passionate
I have moved often and so I have attended a lot of colleges. Dr. Hassell is the best professor I've ever had. The quality of his classes is way better than what I experienced years ago at a UC. I keep wanting to ask him why he came to work at MJC but I'm very glad he did. Beware you will want to change your major to philosophy.
Professor Hassell is a very funny guy. Class is alway interesting, especially when he talks about all the places he's visited. Your reading and writing every day, so you can fall behind quick. He does want to see everyone do good so he gives a lot of 2nd chances and extra credit.
Dr. Hassell is an incredible teacher. He actually teaches you. He is so smart. The class is hard but shouldn't college be difficult? You definitely get your money's worth in his class. I am probably going to be changing my major to philosophy so I can take all of his classes.
Everyone loves him. He is kind. He makes you think. Religious kids love him. Atheists love him. He challenges me to think critically about something new every day. I heard him his office Hours give a student money for a bus pass. Who does that?
Great Philosophy 101 course that has great depth and real world application, anecdotes, and relation. Hassell does really well in lecturing and is very scholarly. Lectures are also regularly funny and sometimes informative like they are about Flint, MI. He also offers a ton of E.C. but it will be a lot of work combined with regular class papers.
I loved his class, so many extra credit opportunities. Definitely be prepared to read and write a LOT. 15 critical reflections due (1000 words each) 7 chapter summaries due (2000 words each) Final paper is 5000 words. He will make you think differently and more critically, I learned a lot from him. He teaches you how to read philosophic language.
I really enjoyed the online class. The professor is very hands off after the first few weeks, but the material is really interesting and the format is discussion based. There is a lot of reading and writing but it is amazing to hear the perspectives of so many different people over the semester. Instructions are clear. He grades fast.
Best professor I've ever had, super smart, inspired me to switch my major to philosophy.
Professors Hassell is one of those professors that you'll never forget. He has inspired me and pushed me to challenge myself. He will get you to think critically and deconstruct everything to make sure that the answer is definitively valid. He will go out of his to help you, so make sure you actually take his advices and help.
Doctor Hassell is inspirational. He gives great lectures and gets you thinking. Get out of your comfort zone, challenge yourself, he'll get you to actually think and that's what we need to do more often. Think things through and critically. Think beyond of what we know and he's the person that can help you with that. Have an open mind and think.
I took this class over the summer and it was super easy. Each week you had a reading assignment, which he is a easy grader. If you do the work you will pass with an A.
he is cool, I like how he explains the reading in class. However, if you start to slack off, you will fall behind, Lots of reading and writing. But he grades on the effort.
He's cool, really knowagable, jokes around alot. This class requires alot of reading and two papers a week followed by 2 300 word responses to other papers.
I dont think Ive ever had a teacher try and help me so much to do better. He helped me not only with understanding philosophy but he helped me learn how to write better. He also helped me get help to deal with problems at home. If you need help at MJC and not just with your homework, this is the guy to see. If he doesnt know, he knows who does.
This class changed my life. Hassel is very passionate about philosophy and totally takes you out of your comfort zone to think outside the box. The work starts out extremely difficult; there is ALOT of reading and writing. 2 essays a week. But he also assigns a TON of extra credit. If you have time to take a mind bending class, take this one.
The course requires a lot lot lot of reading and writing 2 750 (minimum ) essays per week, as long as you dont skip weeks and stay on top of reading every week you should be able to pass. Very down to earth, respectful and helpful teacher
2 essays per week 750 words minimum. There is tons of reading and writing so dont fail behind and attendance is not required but if you dont attend you will be lost in class
Dr. Hassel is so cool he is very approachable outside of class which is why I would go talk to him in his office he is funny and caring BUT his work load is overwhelming and will take up a majority of your time because the writing and reading assigned he is awesome on a personal level but not informative with instructions so go to his office!
Dr. Hassell is one of the best instructors I've had at MJC. His lectures get you thinking but his work load is heavy. His classes are not an easy A but if you put in the work you will get the grade you deserve. Take advantage of his office hours and prepare to laugh during his lectures. Over all he's an awesome and approachable person.
BEST PROFESSOR AT MJC!
Lots of extra credit. Super funny and accessible professor. He'll change your life.
Professor Hassell is one of the best Philosophy, or should I say, Professors in general. He gives amazing lectures, he is inspirational. He will have you challenge your ideas. He is hilarious and makes the class fun and engaging. There is work you have to do, but what do you expect, it's college. He is knowledgeable and cares about his students.
Don't be overwhelmed by the work load, he gives you numerous strategies on how to accomplish it effectively and without too much pain. Unless you're a philosophy stud, which I most certainly am not, you will most likely need to attend the lectures. They are a HUGE help though; he gives you all the tools to succeed, you just have to be proactive.
THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want a professor who cares take this man!!!!!!
PHILO 130: Political Philosophy was the best class Ive taken. Hassell described the class as a seminar and it was. We sat in a circle. We read. We wrote. We struggled. Everyones politics got equally shredded. Hassell is a beast. By the end I had made friends for life and was amazed at how much better I was at thinking and writing. Great experience
101 online was dope. Professor keeps it simple. No busy work. You always know what is due because the same is due every week. 2 essays to read. 2 essays to write. No tests. No busywork. Prof doesnt join discussion board conversations but gives great feedback individually so you dont get embarrassed when you get it wrong. Ill take 105 next.
Professor Hassell has a way of making difficult subject matter seem easy. Fantastic lectures and a low stress learning enviroment.
Dr. Hassell is approachable, informative, and patient with his students. His course work is heavy which is why his last name is Hassell since his courses are a hassle. I absolutely recommend taking him. You will leave his class being a better critical thinker and writer. Plus, this man is funny, energetic, & by no means boring. LECTURES!
This class was the hardest one I've had. I wrote SO many papers in this class, and had a tough time with the reading. But, although the struggle was definitely real he was a GREAT professor. I loved learning in his class and the discussions were thrilling.
this man is the BEST!! He is super accomidating if you need anything! It is a lot of reading and writing, but if you just read the text and show you are engaging with the work it should be no problem! If you have any questions on the work just ask in class and he will explain and help you understand! Go high to class so it could be mind-blowing !
Very nice guy, I don't think I have written so many papers in my life. Homework was, 60 pages per week, and I wrote roughly 1500 to 2000 words per week in essays. Understandable since it was a Critical Reasoning and Analytical writing class. A little confusing on how he wants the assignments done, basically just an essay on the important topics
Inattentive, gives no feedback, doesn't teach- just provides generic info about things. Very vague about assignments. I was very disappointed with this class, I was excited to learn but instead I took a self-guided class with no professor. He sets up well, no follow through. A lot of reading, many papers that he won't grade. Maybe better in person?
He knows his stuff, but you will be receiving it through his filter. I dont have a problem with professors sharing their views, but he is so intent on spreading his message that it bleeds into every conversation and lesson. If he stopped pushing his views hed be good, but unless youre intent on hearing everything in a skewed way, pass this one.
Hassell is a wonderful teacher. He is so willing to help anyone who needs it. He agreed to make PHILO 115 into an honors class and took the time to answer any questions I had, and respected mine and all views in his classes. He's awesome
Very straightforward what he wants. Lots of reading, discussions, & essays. Everythings online, lectures in person. I never went to class but did all my homework & passed with an A. Hes a great professor but doesnt give ANY feedback on anything. Participation is 10% of ur grade, dont need textbook, everythings provided online. I recommend him!
Hassel is a really cool professor he's super open to all opinions and kind of let's you get to your own conclusions. The workload is a little bit insane. About 1000 words a week.
Tristin was a great professor. He's changed his course curriculum from earlier semesters by listening to feedback. He creates each semester according to the input of his previous classes. He just wants you to learn. Not a stickler for deadlines, he just wants everyone to be able to discuss what they read in class. YOU'LL LEARN AND YOU'LL BE GLAD.
Professor Hassell's lectures are incredibly interesting and I looked forward to class every time, despite it being at 8 A.M. The work and books are all online and he generously provides you with the materials you need. He clearly cares about his students and the subject he teaches. He is clear about what he expects. He's a good person.
By far the best professor I've ever had! He will get you thinking!
One of the greatest Professors you'll ever have. He cares about his students and he will challenge your thoughts. Be open minded when it comes to discussions. Be respectful towards others and him. He respects and welcomes everyone. There is a lot of reading to do, however, that comes with the course and he will help you out to understand the text.
Mr. Hassell is a great teacher. What I mean by great is that he chooses interesting material to teach to the class. He's flexible and open to feedback. He's also funny which makes the class fun and interesting. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities; however, he does give a ton of homework but NO EXAMS!! His class is so worth it!
So much writing, and such little time to do them. He's an ok professor but his workload can be overwhelming at first.
Genuinely caring professor. Hass is basically my entire support system at MJC and has helped me grow into someone Im proud of. The classes are great and the topics are interesting. Take the time to speak to him outside of class and you will be very glad you did.
A LOT of writing for canvas discussions and short essays due weekly, only two long essays. Attendance not necessary but does help. Lectures are interesting, and makes you really think about the topic that week and makes it easy to write the assignments.
Great teacher and interesting class however NOT recommended for students who already have a huge load on their shoulders, due to the immense work on canvas. Attendance is barely mandatory, feels like an online class.
There was a lot of reading, you definitely need to make time for it all. Overall, great professor, not too many essays or assignments.
I had Professor Hassell for Philosophy 101 and I really enjoyed the class. He assigns quite a bit of reading but it's manageable. He really makes the lectures interesting and does a good job of getting the class involved and bringing humor into the classroom.
Professor Hassell was by far my favorite professor. He is extremely knowledgable about philosophy and you can tell he really cares about his students. Be prepared for a lot of writing. There are opportunities for extra credit but don't dismiss the essays! Participate and you will be totally fine!
I felt like I was in highschool doing AP work again, i.e. busy work. I chose to do a 12 week course that included: 12 papers (800-1500 words) and 30 discussions (300-500 words). Doesn't give back feedback, but expected improvement on every paper. He does give extra credit.
So this wasn't a bad class in the way that he graded. You do a lot of discussions, and essays and have 2 long essays (1500 words each). Be prepared to read a lot. I thought it was a lot of busy work but luckily he graded very easily, but you still need to put effort in. I would recommend this class to someone who is prepared.
Doctor Hassell is bloody brilliant. He genuinely cares about the success of his students and endeavors to create an atmosphere where everyone feels allowed to develop their own voices. Our course was full of interesting discussions on power, oppression, insiders vs. outsiders, as well as what constitutes freedom, liberty, and institutions.
Professor Hassell is a real gem at MJC. If you want to truly be challenged, take this class. He's super cool! There's an insane amount of homework for his class, but he's really flexible with turning things in late (which I appreciate as a working student). Don't get too far behind though because you'll quickly notice your hw piling up.
Be ready to write and analyze and interpret a lot of text. You will be writing at least 3 essays a week but you will learn so much. He offers extra credit to analyze current events and gives you ample opportunity to catch up. For the love of god, don't do what I did and take an English class while taking this class. HE IS HILARIOUS!!
Probably one if the best professors ive ever had. Although it is a lot of homework i wont mind taking any of my classes again, super chill and gives great lectures!
Free textbook but you need Netflix. Heavier reading load than most English classes. Not a hard class to pass, no quizzes, but you need time to read and write a lot of papers (weekly), about 10 essays and 2 long essays. He gives extra credit liberally. Not a class to breeze by on, but best class I've taken. If you don't like writing, don't enroll.
I finished this course a month in advance, in a sped up course, and received an A. There is TONS of reading but the work is child's play. Getting an email back to clarify the work is Mr. Hassell's kryptonite, I guess. My grades were unexplained, unclear, and he was completely uninvolved. He accepts late work so he can be lazy, so that's cool.
He is an awesome teacher. Really fun to be in his class, very enjoyable. He gives a fair amount of work and reading but still makes it enjoyable.
Example of modernized teacher. Does not teach, gives your assignments for the semester and lets you learn yourself. Currently taking this class and we have to do two 1000 word discussions a week along with another 1200 essay, more than an English teacher.. And the reading alone ARE BIBLE SIZED BOOKS. Elective classes think they matter the most -_-
Athough I think Prof Hassell is a good guy, his class was mostly a joke. All assignments (online discussions and essays every week) are outlined in the syllabus but the assignments themselves are hardly ever talked about. Due dates are never clear and everything gets postponed. Overall an easy class but lack of clarity in homework and essays sucks
I loved this class. The structure of how Proffessor Hassell teaches how to interpret and construct an argument has been really helpful in teaching how to write an essay. Despite the fact I have written many papers before, I felt this class added many tools to make my writing and understanding of what I am reading improve.
Had his class face-to-face until the pandemic came around. The increase of hours at my job made it hard to do the homework on time, but Tristin gave me multiple chances to turn in late work and my grade went from an F to an A! A very understandable and caring professor. 2 essays a week, but fairly easy if you have an open mind read the textbook.
I loved His class! He was a great teacher, nice and relatable. We talked about everything we were assigned and he opens up discussion for everyone to feel free to talk and understand the material. The is a lot of work, all online. You really have to stay on top of it or youll fall behind fast!
I desire to convey what an honor it was to learn philosophy under Dr. Hassell. In this course we examined the formation of western religious thought & being guided under someone who both worked with the Church (not sure which one) & has a background in ethics is something that any curious mind must engage with. His teaching made me a better human.
This is my second time taking Professor Hassell he is truly a good professor. He is so understanding with late assignments mostly because we are in a pandemic and he really wants his students to pass. A lot of writing but it is spread out far enough it does not feel like you are getting buried under work. would highly recommend this class!!!
I loved this class because it was super easy to get a really high grade and the texts we read were interesting to read. As long as you do your work on time and within the correct format youd no doubt get an A+. There are discussion posts and summaries and for the final is a long essay, it was easy to maintain a great grade throughout the course.
Philosophy 101, asynchronous online class- such a pleasure to take. Regular discussions on different texts/excerpts along with roughly 10 essay on major texts. You learn, analyze, and absorb. Such a variety of philosophies presented as well. As long as you do the work you will be fine.
There are no quizzes or tests, but multiple summaries and essays a week instead. Don't be fooled into thinking you won't have to put in work though. There's a ton to read then write. I can see how a student could easily fall being because of this. The readings were super interesting and informative though, which made it easy.
I took Professor Hassell's Philosophy class and I can overall say that he is a good professor if you really want to understand philosophy. He gives out no tests because he doesn't believe in them but we do have weekly essays. He doesn't grade tough but he likes to see that his students try and understand the overall gist. There is a lot of reading.
He's pretty chill, if youre gona take philosophy this is the dude! Yes, lots of homework and essays and discussions. But they're easy, just make sure you read and attend class just to get some good notes! If youre ever needing some time to complete an assignment just make sure you talk to him. Professor is really understanding!
Professor Hassel will give you the textbooks but you need a Netflix subscription if you don't already have one in order to watch a couple of documentaries.
The class isn't too difficult necessarily, but he gives out an insane amount of work. One 1200 word essay a week that requires 3+ hours of reading and film watching. I get he's passionate about the subject but he acts as if his students don't have other classes or jobs or lives to attend to as well.
This class is not difficult, just a lot of work, for the whole semester you have about 10 400-word discussions, and then 10 1000-word essays, and as long as you do everything on time, you'll be fine.
Professor Hassell would assign a 1000 word easy almost every week that required reading or watching long films. However, he is an easy grader and as long as you submit all the assignments you will pass the class. He also seems like a really understanding person.
The class is pretty simple, you are either doing two discussion post worth 400 words each or writing a 1000 word essay on any topic as long you do not procrastinate it is hard to fail the class
Wasn't necessarily a bad class, but it was an essay as well as discussion posts every week. He grades solely on participation and relevancy to the topic which is nice. But if you don't care much for politics, this is probably not the class for you (it wasn't for me), he seems to have a left-wing bias based on some of the assignments he gave.
You do not like writing?Don't take this class! But he is a super easy grader and accepts late work(email him and create a logical argument, he doesn't want excuses). No final and gives out some extra credit. The coolest professor I've had, if you get the opportunity, take his lecture! He's a personality, his lecture will be the best you've ever had.
I do not recommend taking this class if you are taking 15+ units because of how time-consuming it is. Lots of reading, writing, and discussions. I would advise turning in work early even if he claims to accept late work because his grading is not always accurate. Ignores emails, does not provide feedback, not willing to accommodate needs.
This is excessive and repetitive. The weekly work is summarizing a chapter of the online text book and responding to two other students. It's absurdly repetitive and very boring. I am regurgitating each chapter and writing the same response to every other student because there is only so much I can say reading the same chapter 4 times.
Professor Hassell is great. Not a tough grader and promptly replies to emails. That being said, I found this class very dull and repetitive. There is lots of reading and writing required, with either three discussions or one paper due each week. I did not enjoy this class, but it wasn't terrible either. If you hate writing, then it's not for you.
The workload of this class is unbearable for only 3 credits. Give or take 1000 word essays due every week along with 300-500 word discussion posts summarizing time-consuming reading. I must say you get 100% just for doing it on time, but for someone who takes 15-17 units a semester, it's too much.
he was chill
Professor Hassell is a good professor, but he doesn't teach at all online. The whole class is centered around long (600 word average) discussions 3 times a week. On top of that there are also big essays weekly. You get full credit on every discussion if complete I wouldn't take this class if you have a full load. It's an unnecessary amount of work.
If you do the work, you will get an A. This being said, prepared to do a LOT of reading, and a LOT of writing. The material is dense and the papers are numerous. The material really is interesting, less so you when you are rushing on a Friday night to read 80 pages on the metaphysical and need to right 1,000 word essay after.
AMAZING! LOTS of writing, and only writing, but he grades SUPER easily. I got 100% on EVERYTHING! He's super nice. he doesn't take attendance and in-person helps, but is not necessary. I missed the 2nd half of the semester and passed with OVER 100%. he grades up to 115%! He talks very openly and is super respectful!
He is very lenient on grading, but assigns lots of work and essays. Still, it is very easy and hard to fail, make sure to be on top of it and you should be fine!
Workload is unbearable.500 word discussion + chapter reading that's usually 10 pages.5 times a week. -5% for each day past due.The curriculum topics are Intro to arguments, induction & deduction, Nation, Plato, Aristotle, Rights, Utilitarianism. Work is fairly easy but TOO MUCH WORK for 3 credits with full workload. Not what I thought it would be.
If you are pursuing a philosophy degree, I wouldn't recommend this professor unless you keep in contact with him. As long as you do your work, you'll be just fine. There is lots of material to read, but again, it is easy work. Very forgiving if something comes up.
Professor Hassell is a chill grader who accepts late work. Lots of writing assignments, but he gives full credit if you complete them. unstuck AI can be helpful for prepping discussions and essays. Not the most engaging lectures, but a manageable class overall.
Don't get me wrong, he's very educated but he is impossible to reach through email. If you're like me, balancing 4 other classes and a job, the work load is TERRIBLE! He has you writing an essay nearly every week, if not you have 3 discussions at 500 words per discussion. I don't recommend him for people that don't have time to write (like me).
Prof. Hassell cares about what's happening in the world and tailors your assignments to current events. He is a "no BS", dry sense of humor kinda teacher. He doesn't grade attendance at all but the lectures are awesome and participation-heavy - he cares about your thoughts. So much reading and writing, discussion posts, and essays. But easy grader!
Hassell's was HONESTLY one of the best classes. His workload is INSANE! Especially for those that have full time jobs or just busy lives in general. I will say I turned majority of my work in late, but I still got 100% He has discussion posts due everyday and on weeks there are no discussions you will have an essay due on Friday. Textbook provided!
Professor Hassell, you have been nominated as the best professor of the semester. Thank you for being so considerate of your students. I really don't want to say goodbye with this professor..
Overall this class wasn't terrible. While it was an online class, he grades fairly easily and accepts late work. However, the workload is a lot with either 3 or 4 300-500 word discussions a week or 1500 word essays due. If you have a job or other classes, just be aware of the workload and use time management. Good luck!
There is multiple discussion posts for each chapter that require 500 words… there is no set due date, so it is very scattered each week. One week you'll have back to back discussion posts or every other day. If you have a job, have a busy personal life or balancing other classes, this will be difficult to time manage.
If you take this class and work full-time or have a busy life, be prepared. Discussion posts are due almost every day, ranging from 300-800 words. Essays are due frequently, also. Loads of reading/watching 2-hour-long documentaries. Workload is extremely heavy and difficult compared to my STEM classes. Accepts late work, which was my saving grace.
He is upfront about it being a lot of work, 8 essays and 24 discussions, but that is the total work. About three discussion a week or one essay. He is an extremely easy graded, discussion are graded for completion. You can work ahead as much as you want.
if you have a busy lifestyle (work, full course load) and/or don't enjoy writing, don't take this class. the amount of busy work assigned in this class is ridiculous. it is very easy to fall behind due to the unorganized and sporadically changing due dates and heavy workload. wouldn't recommend for anyone who can't devote most of their time to it
Honestly, the workload was insane. BUT, he graded for completion. Do the assignment and you'll pass the class with an A no issue. Would take his class again.
