This guy is absolutely awful. Not recommended at all!!
Do not take this teacher. I never have any idea what he's talking about because he makes no sense. He is not helpful and gets flustered if you ask him a question. Unless you're ok with teaching yourself, avoid him.
pretty ****ing bad
i kinda feel sorry for him since he has no idea what hes doing
if i didn't take this class last year id be so lost. i hate it
If you have any previous math knowledge you will do fine. He is a pretty sweet dude if you give him a chance. If you struggle in math he might not be the best teacher.
he doesnt care if you come to class, and will take homeworks that were due when u were absent which is cool- but be ready to teach yourself the work. he grades every hw for like 50 points so those really help ur grade...he doesnt help tho when u ask questions so just be ready to figure everything out on ur own time

I feel bad but oh my gosh...He shouldn't even be considered a teacher. This guy is pretty new so I understand how it can be rough but he was awful. He didn't know what he was talking about half the time and he could never explain anything if you had a question. Unless you're REALLY good in calc, you do not want to have him as your teacher.
I had to drop this class because there wasn't any way i could have passed it. The best part about Troy is that he's got dreads. He mumbles everything, and is constantly late for class. I wouldn't reccomend him to anyone
I did so well in his class, i took notes, did the homework i could do, and got a 17 percent on the test, i love this guy, he is the man! take him if you want to a. fail b. hate life or c. sleep... trust me hes a good pick for anyone who doesnt care about their grades or doesnt mind failing out! Hail Bob Marley
Banks is by far one of the worst teachers I have experienced. He mumbles while "teaching", ineffectively helps me when we ask for help, is intimadated of our small class of 15, we spend a lot of time just trying to read the illegible words he scribbles on the board! Nice guy, but its hard to understand!
With my working on a second degree, I've had a fair amount of experience with professors. Banks is BY FAR the WORST prof I've ever had. If you like trying to teach yourself a foreign language(i.e.: Calculus), GO FOR IT! Even though he's a PhD, he can't bring the material down to the students level!
If you are not prepared to teach yourself DO NOT take this class...walk away QUICKLY he mumbles, you can't read the writing on the board and you scare him when you ask questions. Should not be teaching...
Worst professor I've ever had. Do not take Banks unless you're taking a lower-level math course. I can't even imagine taking a calc class with him. Great guy, but a terrible teacher.
He is a really nice guy but is quite easily one of the worst professors. He mumbles and cannot write. He never understands questions therefor you must teach yourself
I know many people complain about his class, & its hard to understand him sometimes, but he's a very nice professor and is AlWaYs willing to help after class. I didn't think his tests were that hard as long as you study.
Learn to decipher his writing on the board and the mumbling. Or... read the textbook and be prepared to teach yourself. I don't think he had any idea what he was doing.
I loved this class. He repeated himself alot so the material was covered in depth. I thought this class was easy. His tests were not that hard, I mean, he tells you what is going to be on them and the few quizzes just helped your grade if you studied. Overall, good professor
He is a nice quy, but an awful teacher. He copies notes straight from the text book and does not give examples very well. Seems very nervos in front of class and has a hard time answering questions. In fact, he does not really answer questions at all just repeats them back to you. Try to find another teacher for this section
AVOID! Doesn't really teach anything-copies straight out of the book, mumbles incoherently, and seems very nervous standing in front of a class. Can't answer your questions. Hard to know whats on a test or quiz. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
The class blew and he didnt teach he talked to himself at the chalkboard the whole time cause no one understood what he was doing. If you ask a question he answers it with a question. If you ask for help you wont get any. The textbook is everything you literally teach yourself math. Do not take this class.
He is never prepared for class and does not know how to teach. Its a teach yourself type of class and he never knows the answer to anything. He is very nice but the class is hard if you are not math inclined. Good luck being confused by his mumbling and constant "out-to-lunchness"..try to avoid this teacher if you are bad at math.
Cool guy, very chill, but probably the worst teacher. he is too smart for his own good. He knows his math but he does not know how to teach it to you. Exams are easy, but if you want a future involving math, you must have someone who can teach you the material, so find someone suitable to teach and make you learn.
Terrible teacher! Doesn't answer questions--repeats them back to you and think's that's a good answer. We have an exam coming up and we've all demonstrated that we don't understand the material, but he's not offering any leeway for us, so we're all going to fail by no fault of ours. Teaches straight out of the textbook, which is also unhelpful.
He doesn't know how to teach the material to the students in a comprehensible manner and is awful at explaining ANYTHING. Doesn't really do anything to help the class with our troubles. Ask him a question about what he explained and he chuckles, then explains it the same way before and asks "Does that make sense?". If possible avoid taking him.
I'm in the same class. I think he's nice but he's awful at discrete math. That test that the student two spots below mentioned was taken, and the class avg was a 60! And then he just went on like everything was OK!? wow! I had calc1-3 Dif EQ, Lin Alg and got B's or better. This class is insane! He's unprepared, hard to get ahold of, rushes...
wow..i took stats a few years ago. started off doing okay in this class because of that, but not a good teacher at all, cool guy but just cannot explain anything..
This teacher is by far the worst teacher I have ever had for any class. I am fairly good at math and I couldnt understand ANYTHING this guy was talking about when it came to discreet math. He is very hard grading homework and grades for accuracy. He also cannot explain ANYTHING you asked him.
terrible teacher. Cannot comprehend any question asked, needs to go back to what ever country he was born. Never EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER take this teacher!!!!
His handwriting it quite messy and he isn't much help outside of class. However, once you get used to the writing, you figure out how the class works. Although he's not the greatest teacher in the world, he gives hard examples but simple questions on the exams.
Okay, his name sounds very American and hes from Texas, but this teacher is all not that great. As a freshman in fall 2008, I was looking so forward to really learning math for my engineering major. My cousin who does not speak english well can write and speak better and louder then he can. I do not reccomend him you can teach yourself
This teacher is possibly the single worst teacher that Salisbury has to offer. The Math department already is lackluster. I am very good at math and statistics, receiving A's in all other courses related to math and stats. I couldn't pull a C in this man's class. He lacks a grading rubric and likes to take points off for no reason.
**DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS** TROY BANKS IS THE WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE... HIS QUIZ/TEST/HOMEWORK ARE graded so hard and he does not know to teach.. I had to withdraw because every grade i had was below 40%.. and I studied for his class. RUNN!!!!!!
Ok, i am going to keep it simple. Unless you know math (i.e college Calculus) very well, take the class. But if not, and you are new to this, DO NOT HAVE HIM AS A TEACHER. He puts up no examples, his helping after class is useless. And my transcript is horrible thanks to the one F I got from him. Heed my advice, future students.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH HIM. He can't teach and doesnt want to help you. He should not be teaching.
mumbles in class and doesn't have a clue how to explain anything.
I wouldn't recommend taking him. Nice guy, but explains everything very poorly.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He doesn't know how to explain anything at all; literally the entire class had no idea what was going on all semester. And he is so awkward, it made me uncomfortable to talk to him. And I have to take him next semester too!! This class is confusing anyway, but take it with anyone else!
He is very laid back and funny. You need to be in class to get notes for the exams. You may have to ask a question more than once to get the answer you're looking for.
DO NOT take this teacher. He mumbles and does not know what he is talking about. He rarely answers his email, so its hard to get help. I recommend taking another teacher.
Troy Banks seems really smart, but cannot explain anything to you in a way that you will understand. He asks more questions than the students. His handwriting is comparable to hieroglyphics, so good luck trying to decode what he writes on the board. How are you supposed to learn anything from someone who has chalk on his face everyday. DONT TAKE!
The downside is that his handwriting is terrible and he's not very clear, he just copies notes form the book basically. The upside is that the quizzes are easy and the exams are moderate/fair.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't teach, doesn't answer questions (just laughs awkwardly), and is completely scatterbrained. He would leave class randomly for 5-10 minutes without saying anything. He forgot to give us our final project, so we had half the time to complete it we were supposed to. DON'T TAKE!!!
I read the comments before hand and didn't listen. He is exactly how everyone described him on here. He doesn't teach you at all, he'll write problems on the board and solve them himself and doesn't go into the actual steps of solving. He'll say "Does this make sense?" and it never does.Akward laugh, weird guy.Should not have a job in teaching.
Goes to fast and does exactly what everyone else has said. He anwered problems on the board himself and expects you to already know everything.
Teacher is alright. I mean he really just writes the textbook on the board goes through the material extremely quick he knows the material but he dosent explain it he just writes the deffinition expects y ou to understand it and move on. You have to use the book and teach yourself. He grades the HW hard but the quizes and tests are not very complex
Very frustrating. I equate him to a jammed printer - he knows what he has to get across, he just can't seem to convey it in a manner that's understandable. Extremely bright, but I found myself not understanding frequently. Hours of HW and labs (labs suck), but if you teach yourself you'll do ok. Somehow I got an A. Nice guy. I have mixed feelings.
Almost worth taking just for the pure comedy of watching him.. He was so scatterbrained and awkward it was almost funny. He would randomly leave without saying a word then suddenly reappear (his office was in another building so no idea where we was going lol). Had a 15 min. convo about fig newtons one day... Somehow got an A
This man is the wors professor I have ever had to deal with. He is incomprehensible and the only thing less understandable than his rambling lectures was his deplorable handwriting. The textbook we used in class was crystal clear and so the homework wasnt very challenging. If you have I suggest you try your very hardest to swich.
His handwriting is awful. He does not explain anything and jumps all over the place when teaching. His homework assignments are super long and challenging.
Pretty useless in terms of providing clarity. Most of his explanations are either irrelevent or further complicate the topic. I ended up having to visit Dr Shannon in her office hours to have her explain the material out of the book (since she wrote it) in order to understand anything that confused me.
The guy is a great guy, and smarter than he looks. This man is extremely smart in his field, and probably second to only a couple. It is true that the clarity lacks a bit, but discrete math is already a hodge podge of maths to begin with, so confusion is bound to set in at some point. I think he gets a bad rap, and truly cares about students.
Terrible at explaining concepts. The textbook is extremely confusing. Banks also has 3rd grade handwriting, making it very difficult to see what he is writing on the board. Best to stay away from this professor if you can help it.
Dr. Banks is an excellent mathematician who appears to be able to do most of calc II in his head, but that works against him as a teacher. He writes problems on the board very quickly, taking shortcuts and doing multiple steps in his head without explaining what he's doing, making it almost impossible to follow along. Mediocre teacher.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. Takes 10 minutes to make an example in class. These examples don't help at all on the homework or quizzes. If you know what you're doing at all don't go to class because he will end up confusing you. He is so uncertain about himself that it's comical. And on top of everything his handwriting is impossible.
Banks sucks. He's incredibly awkward and makes our class feel very uncomfortable, and it's hard to tell if he's joking or not. His handwriting is horrendous. Given all of this, his class is not incredibly hard. Tests and quizzes are very short (like 5-10 problems). Class includes alot of teaching yourself. Wouldn't really recommend.
Dr. Banks moves pretty quickly, but if you actually study the material daily, you will be able to keep up in class. Although some of the exam problems can be a little challenging, he grades pretty leniently, and trying your best on every problem pays off a lot. He's pretty cool.
wow, this class was a huge joke. it seemed as if he was on some sort of heavy medication every class because he seemed confused on everything he was talking about. his handwriting is awful, and he grades homework for accuracy. i spent most of my time teaching myself out of the textbook. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Banks really wasn't that bad. I passed with a B and I'm horrible at math. He tries to make jokes to ease the mood and as long as you smile and laugh he will like you. He will help if you ask for it. He gives study guides that are similar to tests and quizzes and both are only 10-15 questions. Handwriting is bad though, I constantly squinted.
Handwriting is awful but he is a great teacher. He takes the time to try and explain things to you. He gives really good study guides. Grades tests easily but grades the home work for accuracy. Pay attention in class and do your home work and you will do just fine.
Banks is overall good at his subject. He takes 15 minutes usually to explain one example. He sometimes asks questions that make you feel like you are stupid and most of the time you are unclear of anything he says. If he asks you for an answer to a question he won't correct it if you are wrong, pay attention! Go to class, weekly quizzes!
Class is pretty useless. I had him for 155 stat and If you just read every book chapter which is only 13 chapters over the semester youll learn twice as much as you would in class in half the time. Don't let him confuse you.
I took Professor Banks for Stat 155 and it was a challenging class. He teaches the material really fast! He has weekly quizzes which in the long run help you with the exams but you have to study for both! He provides examples to all of the problems! If you show him that you're trying and go to him for help, you will be fine!
Everyone hates on this man so much.. I don't know why! He can be pretty spacey, but he is such a nice guy and very knowledgable! He can kind of beat around the bush when explaining things, but he does his best to make sure everyone is on the same page. If you don't understand something, he will gladly help you out! Just ask!
Banks can barely write legibly, Constant clarification is required to understand what he is writing. I took Calc 2 with him at 2pm, only 8 kids are in my class, and on the most recent test 1 kid got above a 75%
Banks is a really nice guy but a terrible teacher. He is very spacey and not clear. He speaks quietly and his hand writing is not legible at all. He would try to help but honestly, it would just make it worse. His tests were terrible and he is not an easy grader. Homework is based off of correctness, not completion. Worst math class I have taken.
I would not recommend taking his class, he doesn't do a good job of actually explaining the material. When you ask him a question, he just beats around the bush. He's also very boring with very poor handwriting, he does all of his notes on the chalkboard.
He is a nice guy, and if you go to his office hours he is very willing to help you. But his lectures are extremely boring, very hard to understand. I learned more by reading the book and doing the example problems. His tests are not that hard and he gives a lot of partial credit, but I often left class extremely confused about the material.
Banks is such a nice guy. He tries, just sometimes he doesn't come off very clear. He has his PhD, so he is very intelligent. If you go to him for help it'll benefit you. Study his study guides and you will be just fine! I've taken him for 2 courses so far and I have received an A in both... So it's possible! He also curves most of the time :)
Dr. Banks has awful penmanship and is difficult to understand. But, if you ask for clarification he'll do so without hesitation. He is a nice guy and is very willing to help the students that ask for it. Class participation is essential and you will receive the grade that you work for.
I don't understand why people don't like this teacher. I know his handwriting isn't very good, but he always explains the material when any student needs clarification. He also is very generous when grading tests. If you take his class, just don't be afraid to ask questions or go to him for help and I promise you will do well.
Dr. Banks is a great guy!! He is willing to help any student understand the material better until you understand. Lectures are rough because his penmanship is bad and you can barely catch up when writing and trying to understand. Very few examples and clarification through the lectures which makes it essential to ask questions. Many quizzes!!
Dr. Banks was the most unclear professor i have ever had. He mumbles constantly, writes chicken scratch on the chalkboard, and to top it all off he moves at an insane speed making it impossible to understand anything due to the fact that you are writing non-stop. Grades homework harshly. If you have to take this class, make friends to study with.
Although his handwriting is pretty awful, he is a very intelligent professor, and he is helpful and clear in his lectures. He actually grades in a very lenient manner; not destroying our grades with minor computational errors. Good professor.
He's not the best teacher but he's a good person! He doesn't do the best at explaining your questions you have. Almost each week, you have a test or quiz. The homework is online through Web Assign and is not that bad to complete.
One word: AWFUL
People have said it before but he is a super awesome and cool guy just a terrible terrible teacher.. He hasn't given me a pop quiz before but he does give a Ton of homework. I have had more difficult graders however he is certainly not lenient with his grading. His tests were Extremely long. Long enough for a three hour test when we only had 50min.
He is a really sweet, humorous, and caring professor but on the other hand he doesn't explain things well nor teach the material well. I barely learned anything in class but i went to SI and the SI instructor taught 10x better than this professor. He has really bad handwriting so it's hard to understand what he's writing. He is a lenient grader.
Not too bad
Not the worst, but far from the best. He comes late every class and teaches to the last second. Throws quizzes and exams in randomly. You have to teach yourself; online videos saved me. He writes sloppy. Grades easy, lots of partial credit on exams.
Awesome! He's my favorite professor, so funny and understanding! I used to hate math but he makes class tolerable! I highly recommend!
Good teacher if you focus. Do your work and actually try in the class and you'll be alright. Easy to talk to. Interesting person. Cares about students understanding the information given.
i participated a lot in class and it helped. simply put, professor Banks is a genius. he struggles teaching sometimes because he is so smart that he moves ahead of the class. he will teach you everything if you participate, raise your hand, and ask for help. Very good at teaching material outside of class, and just needs to work on being motivated.
Students who skipped class more than once a week did not do well so maybe there should have been an attendance policy. I loved professor Banks and he always worked with the class to give us the best chance at succeeding. Very helpful outside of class. He is very humorous as well, but makes sure to limit the humor and teach when he needs to.
Dr. Banks is alright but does a lot of lectures, one every single day, even if it is uncalled for. He will even lecture on the next topic the day before exam rather than reviewing for the exams. He didnt start putting in grades until midway thought the semester so you wont know where you stand. He talks alot and many times it is not understandable
Banks is a really cool guy but he just does not know how to teach. He knows math and knows what he is talking about but has no idea how to explain/teach it. Unless you already have a solid background in math I would not take him I had to go to EVERY SI session to learn anything.
Prior to taking his class, I read so many bad reviews on him. I was a bit nervous for his class. Nevertheless, he was a great professor! Math was never an easy subject, but he made it so easy, his lectures were heavy but he did his best to make sure everyone understood. He was always at office hours willing to help. Awesome professor!
Without the practice exams and partial credit, and YouTube math teachers, I would have failed this class. I dont know who pays these people to write positive things about this man but I would advise changing majors before you take him. There was not a single time I felt he knew what he was talking about.
This man shows up late every day. His lectures make me fall asleep, terrible at including students in lecture. His handwriting is god-awful. It's better to rely on YouTube math teachers than him. I don't go to class and I know as much as people that have not missed more than three. Essentially avoid this man at all costs for the sake of your GPA.
He's a really nice and cool guy, if you participate in class he'll like you. make sure to do the practice exams which he posts online, before the exams because he reuses some of the questions. if you try you will pass this class
I had to drop his class because it's so difficult to learn from him. I have no idea if he's a good teacher or not because I had no idea what he was teaching. He constantly mumbles and speaks so low it's almost a whisper. And you can't rely on what he writes on the board instead. His handwriting is one of the worst I'd ever seen.
Awful does not do justice when describing his handwriting. I had a high B all semester and a week before finals he slams in grades which dropped me to a C. I went from a close A to almost failing his class. Very unorganized, he would forget to print quizzes so after studying, we'd have to wait all weekend to take it. Not good at replying to emails.
Never have I ever had the worst experience in a class due to a professor. This man comes into EVERY class 5-10 minutes late. He also lectures during the whole class with such a quiet voice and even mumbles which makes it very hard to understand. Not only can you barely understand him, but his handwriting equivalent to a 5-year-old. Avoid him!
I understand people say not to take a professor and sometimes you think "oh well he can't be that bad". For the love of everything holy do not take this man.
Dr. Banks is genuinely one of the coolest guys ever, but when it comes to teaching I honestly have absolutely no clue what goes on in class. Calc on zoom maybe one of the most confusing things ever. In the beginning, I attempted to take notes but after the second week of class, I was like F that I have no clue what's going on.
I've taken Dr Banks once for Calc 1, and twice for Linear Algebra, once as covid began and once online during covid. I dropped him both times. All three times have been the most miserable classes I've been in since starting college. Very smart man but my god he does not know how to teach. Would rather drop out than take another class with him.
Shows up 10 mins late every single day teaches directly out of the textbook so if you wanted to you could just skip everyday and learn from that and is just horrible at explaining things and giving notice for exams and test dont take this mans class drop it while you can
I get through zoom its hard, but he was late almost everyday. All of the work he would do can be done on your own. As long as you pay attention you are fine, but I don't feel like you can even contact him in need of help. It is possible to do well but be prepared to figure it out on your own
Would never take it again. He is probably the worst professor I ever had. He teaches out of a textbook and nobody knows what's going on in the class most of the time.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. ID ADVISE YOU TO SWAP CLASSES WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. He teaches out of a textbook. JUST OVERALL A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is so hard to hear (mumbles all the time), his handwriting is terrible, every class is literally just rewriting notes he writes on the board. Doesn't put in grades on time, there's a quiz every Friday and he always tells you about assignments last minute. I didn't listen to the reviews and they were all true.
I respected how he cared for his students, but as a professor, it doesnt seem that he cares. He was late, unorganized, you dont get a moment in class to think about what youre writing. He also calls on you a million times a class (kinda impressive how he knew everyones names even if they didnt go to class)
Late to class, mumbles terrible handwriting. All class consists of is a lecture where you cant hear him or understand what he is writing. He teaches out directly out of the textbook. Tons of quizzes and homework he announces last minute. Calls on people all the time and is angry if you dont know answer.
Troy Banks was a decent professor. He was very funny and his class was always hilarious. However, he always lost his train of thought and was hard to follow a lot of the time.
The lectures given to us had close to no relation to the course material we were constantly being quizzed on. He seemed almost clueless on the material he was teaching constantly needing to be corrected by students. Me and my peers needed multiple study groups and group chats to pass this class. Not sure how he still has a job if Im being honest.
Prof Banks was a nice guy but he shouldn't be teaching. He shows up to class with loose-leaf paper and a magic marker and teaches off of that. He moves way too quick you cant think. Most quizzes have nothing to do with what you learn in class. You will pass this class if you do well on the homework and teach yourself the exam material.
Dr. Banks knows what he is talking about but I think sometimes he forgets that we are new to the subject and goes a bit too fast. Be prepared to write a lot of notes but if you need to him to slow down or have a question just ask him and he will try to be as helpful as possible. Sometimes he mumbles so try to sit near the front.
If you want to pass this class, get ready to teach yourself and/or look up material on YouTube. Banks' lectures are fast-paced with little room to even breathe let alone think. He will answer your questions, but not often in an unclear manner. The saving grace of this professor is that he grades really easily. Partial credit will be your crutch.
Reads straight from the textbook and mumbles the whole time. Better off figuring it out on your own. Is not much help 1 on 1 either. Teaches like his students know as much as he does. Would be better off teaching 300 level math courses and up.
Simply put do not take a single course this man tea
Dr. Banks is an awful professor. His lecture notes are illegible, and most students have to teach themselves through the textbook. His quizzes and exams are challenging and he gives only 1-2 days' notice in advance of quizzes and exams which throws off many students. Overall I would not recommend any courses he teaches.
Dr. Banks was an okay professor, however if you do not understand ANYTHING regarding math or subject relating to math. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. The only reason I got a B in his class was because of Mathway and being decent at understanding the concepts he taught. be prepared if you do have him to not understand anything given to you.
Nice professor but good luck passing his class without a tutor or already taking this class in high school. His handwriting is worse than a 1st graders, mumbles, always late to class (typically 6 minutes late but 25 minutes late once for 50 minute classes), does not respond to emails hardly ever. There for the research not to be a teacher.
Exams are a huge portion of the grade in this class but dr banks is really good at giving study material such as practice exams that are almost identical to exams. He is also very lienant in his grading of exams so it helps a lot. The only things bad is the online hws are useless and long and his lectures are fast paced and get confusing so study
I dropped out of bury first semester of 2021. Bank's a nice dude but he sucked at teaching. He couldn't write properly and was corrected for mistakes in his math by students. Our class had a gc for his class because we had to cheat our way through since it was so hard. I went to cc then another 4 year and it was better than bury in general.
If you enjoy fast-paced lectures, this professor is for you. While Dr. Banks cares about his students, he often speeds through content in lectures and all you can do is scribble down notes as he goes. YOU WILL need to read the textbook and use other sources to teach yourself the material, and then use the examples given in class to practice.
I could barely understand anything he was teaching.
Professor Banks' class is a real challenge, but unstuck AI helped me stay on top of the material when the lectures were hard to follow. With diligence and the right study tools, you can get through this class.
horrible professor. his lectures are completely useless. he gives much clearer instruction if you go to office hours, but his office hour times aren't super consistent. avoid at all costs
You can't hear him. I had to teach myself. Awful time overall.
dr. banks was probably the worst professor i've ever had. he was very nice, but you can't understand a single thing he's saying, or writing. he left assignments ungraded since early october, only graded exams, and then graded the past assignments after the final, making it hard to calculate what i needed on the final to pass. avoid this professor.
