Very motivated teacher. His test is all based on his lectures...So copy all lectures. Test Review is given to class. Make sure you get your test papers checked again by him because he tends to scan through the papers and sometimes mark right answers wrong. One test I got 80 but got it rechecked and ended up being 96...
Heis great for those who cannot take notes by listening. He writes his notes on the board and everything on the test is just based on the notes. He is really fun.. I recommend him to everybody.
i love this man. he is so in love with history he makes it so exciting. his tests are alllbased on the notes. so as long as u study your notes your good. also do the papers. i would make sure he checks ur tests he tends to mark things right or wrong without actually checking the test.
Professor Beals is great. Heck, I see him as more of a conversationalist than a Professor.
Class was very boring...very very boring but he did at least try to make it fun, with jokes and all that. If you miss a class you miss out on a lot of information and he gives you much of whats on the test before the test. Also, he's very easy on the grading. Nowhere else did I miss 30 something questions out of 100 and still get a B+
I love teacher! He makes history so exciting to go to! I highly recommend him to you incase your interested in taking History 101 or 102. You take notes and there might be a few questions like three that weren't in the notes, but if you have common sense and study here and there you'll do just fine in his class.
You only use the book for homework, notes written on board and he gives you a review the class before the test. As long as you study for the test and take notes in class you'll do great. He makes corny jokes but he knows his stuff!!
Very eccentric and dramatic in a good way. At first he can appear quite goofy and might put you off, but give him a chance and you'll enjoy the class. More papers to write than in most classes and kind of an odd grader. Inconsistent on papers and marks wrong answers right and vice-versa. Worthwhile overall.
MR. BEALS HAS A LOT OF ENERGY. LECTURE NOTES ARE A MUST...TEST REVIEW BEFORE EVERY CLASS...THE ONLY NEG IS WRITING A HIST REPORT DUE EVERY WEEK FOR 8 WEEKS. HE IS VERY NICE AND FUNNY.
I took 2 semesters with Professor Beals History 101 and 102, and would recomend his to anyone who wants to learn History. there is alot of work, but it is interesting. If you have a question he emails back in less then 24hr.In my opinion he is a great instructor and takes his job very seriously.
Took Mr. Beals online. Thought I would do minimum work get a B and move on. But, his Discussion Posts were fun and class became exciting, even online. 80 discussion posts had to be done in 8 weeks and 4 tests but it was a great class. Made history interesting for a non-history major.
He is very enthusiastic about history, very excited and kind of quirky. If you are sensitive about your personal space than sit in the back of class, otherwise be ready for him to sit on your desk! Odd grader, double check your test questions. Tests based on notes, never used the big textbook. I'd take him again.
Most amazing history teacher I have ever had!His test are very fair and you can find almost all the answers in his notes he provides. You dont really ever need the book. He is more than helpful and ALWAYS answers his e-mails.I used to hate history with a passion but his class was so much fun!
I loved Mr.Beals class. I took him for three hours and we rarley stayed the whole time. He's so funny and energetic, it's like theater and hist mixed together. I laughed every class. Notes are a must! Most test questions come from them! Tests were kind of tricky when it came to the matching. Grade is tests and article reviews. Fun class&fun teacher
I took Mr.Beals online 8wk class and it was easy. All test answers can be found in the book except the quiz which is in the notes. There's one paper and discussion posts which are easy. I actually enjoyed the class it wasn't horrible, but Mr.Beals is way more fun in person:] I took him for 101 too.
I took his eight week class. There are 4 tests, and one constitution quiz. There are 24 discussion questions you have to answer which are easy. You have to respond to two students answers each week also. One 2.5 page report for the 8 week class. I can probably the finish the class in less than two weeks if I tried hard.
Mr. Beals is so great! He's very passionate and caring. He appreciates hard-working students. History is more fun with him teaching it.
I took his online class and was very intimidated. 160 posts (10 per week for 16 weeks) 4 tests, and 4 essays. The good thing was that he did not have due dates but it also backfired because I procrastinated until the last couple of weeks. He did however, give me a C when I clearly deserved a D or an F. I did learn alot though.
Mr. Beals is a great professor. He more than gives students leeway in completing projects. I would highly recommend him as a professor.
Not a good teacher for online classes. Class is very elementary for discussions. You have to answer (at least 75 words per response) 2 out of 3 discussions he posts AND respond to 3 other students responses to the SAME questions (again 75 words for each response). A lot of repetitiveness. Could be taught better.
Great class Hist 101 and Nevada History--had for both. Just have to keep up. Answers all questions and encourages to keep at it. Great professor.
Mr. Beals is an awesome teacher!!! I have a learning disibility and sometimes it takes me longer to understand and when i dont understand something, he answers my emails right away. Not all Professors want to help students with special needs. He is very caring and wants his students to be successful in his classes and in life. Ive taken 2 of hs cla
Mr. Beals is one of the best professors at CSN. I've taken 2 classes with him and to finish my last comment, he is a dedicated, ambititious, helpful teacher and he has my utmost respect...
Come for the class, stay for the show! He's a one man show. He's got many personality quirks, very funny guy, very passionate about history. He makes history fun. Lots of notes, which are a must for the tests. Beware, likes to invade personal space to get a point across, your not safe in the back either! Highly recommended!!
I disagree with the posting that this class was elementary. Took this class online. There are discussion postings that you have to keep up with and they are not easy. There are four tests which are not hard if you have notes. Overall I recommend this teacher he will teach you alot.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!
Very good teacher. Has great interest in the material.
Mr. Beals is a Good Professor. We had to complete discussion postings and do 4 test. There are alot of postings but Mr. Beals was fair about make up work. The test are based off of the Notes that he has prepared so as long as you have those you should be ok with your test. Mr. Beals always responded when I e-mailed him with questions. :)
The Best teacher :-)
There is a lot of reading and discussion forums. His test are a little hard. Helpful when you ask a question. I just wished he outlined what chapters to read every week instead of leaving us on our own to figure it out. I must have been a little off & finished the book 3 wks. in advance. You def. will learn that Reagan is his favorite President.
fun class, but the book was not needed at all. he has online notes where most of the questions come from. if you cant find the answer to the test in his notes, just google the question to find the answer. plus, his tests are not timed and you can take as much time as needed to find the answer, so it was easy. discussion every week were easy too.
This teacher is brilliant. His knowledge of history surpasses any one individual. He loves to teach. He loves history. He understands that his job is teaching history not brainwashing students with liberal pablum.
Helpful, knowledgeable, enthusiastic
Great teacher. Had hime for 101 and 102. Highly recomended!
Excellent. The best. Actual history. You learn something.
The teacher is the best historian/teacher anywhere. I learned a ton. Smart, excited about students and history.
This teacher loves history, loves teaching and loves helpinig students. I'm not a big fan of history but I liked this class and like it maybe a bit more. lol.
Didn't do as well as I wanted. My fault. This teacher is excellent. Class is enjoyable, you learn a ton, he's funny, smart, loves history. Would take him again and again !
Liked and learned a lot.
This instructor is enthuisastic. He respects personal space, students' views - even when they are different from his. He knows history and life like the back of his hand. He is GREAT !
Great Instructor. Knows history. Knows how to share it. I didn't like history before the class, like it more now.
I took his 8 week History 102 class online. He gives 4 tests and a final paper. He responds to emails very quickly and is willing to help you in any situation. I received an A in his class! Take him!
Took this 4 week class online during the Summer of 2011. Very easy and I thought we were going to cram a lot of stuff in like AP history. I was wrong, he gives you notes and you study and use those for your test. I passed all the tests and used most of my knowledge from AP history to speed along. Best class for non majors and he gets it too.
This instructor teaches history. No brainwashing, No ideological nonsense. He gets you to think and understand the past and present. I learned not only about history but about myself.
Excellent historian and teacher.
Hard instructor. Expects you to learn history and learn life. However he is helpful and wants you to learn. Loved the class.
Great professor. If you fail with him, it is your own fault. He is very helpful and attentive towards his students. He likes what he does for a living and it shows. Four tests and an essay. Any questions you may have, just ask, he's always willing to help.
Teach is great ! Don't like history much but he made it interesting and fun. Was willing to discuss things that interested us students.
Very communicative. Very encouraging. If you tell him your a first timer in an online class he'll make sure to assist you. It was my first online class. Learned lots. He wants you to know history.
Excellent instructor ! Especially if you are new to online. My first online class and loved it.
I heard from other people that this professor was an easy one, but they were wrong! He assigns so much reading! He also assigns 20 ESSAY question tests! To complete the tests, it took me a week and a little over 10 hours to complete! I am by no means a lazy person, but this class is ridiculous! Do not take it!
I am a first time online student. Mr. Beals was extremely helpful. I felt I earned my "B."
Unless you have 10 hours a week to spend on a class, pick a different professor.
Very helpful with students. I enjoyed the class and the material.
Great instructor for first time online students. I was scared and nervous after being away from school so long. Extremely helpful. Challenging class but worth it !
Very helpful and communicative. Lots of work but he will guide you through it. History isn't my favorite but it was enjoyable with Mr. Beals
Great instructor. Very helpful. Lots of interesting material.
He encourages students to communicate with him if you are struggling to plan for yr success. Accepts late assignments given that some points will be taken off. Chapters are long as hell so be prepared to read! Open book quizzes. Only negative is the 10 essay test questions he assigns. Id rather it be not all at one time! 10 is overbearing.
I took professor beals over the summer and his class was great. Be prepared to read! Test and quizes were open book along with all the other assignments. The final consisted of a powerpoint project. Hes all about helping you succeed and pass the class. He is definitely not there to fail you. So if you need help, just ask : )
Class is just lecture and taking notes. A quiz for each chapter is due each week, EZ. Quizlet is your bestfriend for these times. There are 4 tests (10 questions) they use to be 20 but he said he cut it down. BUT now each question really has 2 or 3 in them but he counts it as one. Still takes as long. Well played Troy... well played. 1 final essay.

do not take this professor if you want to pass!! he makes almost no sense and this class is far from 101. Majority of the time the questions on the test make absolutely no sense. It seemed as if that attending his holocaust speaker for extra credit mattered the most and if you didn't attend, he docked scores.
Mr. Beals was great to learn from. I learned a ton and enjoyed things. The Holocaust speaker was extra credit and was great ! If you want to learn something take Mr. Beals ! I definitely earned my "B" !
I'm not sure why classes have to be "easy" for teachers to receive a good score on here, so I'll get straight to my review. Prof. Beals is a great teacher with a vast knowledge of American history. He even goes into sides on history to really open up your mind to United States history. The tests are open book. Overall, he was a good professor.
Try and you will pass Easy grader Four main exams with minimum seven days to complete ten essay questions each and one five page research paper Sad could not take for Hist102 as well Made history interesting and more than enough info to ensure success given Great videos and exams made you really think Disliked highschool hist but loved this class
Very easy. Write 1 paper a week consisting of 3 paragraphs about Las Vegas/Nevada. 2 exams which are kind of difficult but open book/notes and NO PROCTORED EXAMS. 1 election study project. Overall its a good class and the professor is very personable and whitty. 2 text books but they are small, simple, and CHEAP! 12.00ish
I took History 217. The reading Beals assigns are regular books you can find at the library. Every week a summary of a current event is due, midterm and final 50 question multiple choice, and a final paper. It's a very reasonable class but make no mistake, if you don't read the material, you don't pass! Beals is very helpful!
Nevada History. Get ready to read, 4 written test, 1 research paper.
He made the class fun and always have something to talk about. He care for the students and wants everyone to pass. Easy A, if you are willing to do the work. Just show up to class, take notes and do the assignments, all quizzes and test are done online. He is willing HELP you!!!
The only things required of us were a midterm and a final. No assignments. His "lectures" were notes of the book, so you didn't need to read the book. It was time consuming, though. The two tests are 20 short-essays each. It took a lot of reading/writing/and time to finish. Really nice teacher. He offered extra credit, but I didn't need it.
Show up to class, and take notes on the lectures and you'll do fine. All the exams are online and he goes over what he wants for answers for each question prior to the exam. There is one major paper although it is not too hard. The class itself is boring but this professor tries to make it as entertaining as it can possibly be for Nevada history.
Professor Beal's is HILARIOUS, it's not that hard of a class. Be prepared to write, his test's are essay questions. He doesn't post his PowerPoint slides online so you have to be in class in order to get the notes. All in all, I enjoyed my fall semester with him.
I loved taking his class because he cares about his students. His Funny and makes the class fun! I highly recommend it and he is always available. AWESOME TEACHER!!
I love taking his class, as long as you pay attention, take notes, ask questions and do the homework you will pass. the tests are online and you get to use notes was so helpful, he gave us an extra week for test 3, he's funny, a nice guy and understanding, the tests are time consuming so do it early and i will be taking class again soon :)
Great professor hilarious with his lecture just do the work and you will be fine.
TOOK MR BEALS FOR FALL 2020 HAD TO BE SWITCHED TO ONLINE HE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM HIS LECTURES ARE VERY INFORMATIVE HIS HILARIOUS AND KEEPS YOU TUNED IN HE GOES OVER AND REVIEWS THE TEST WHICH WAS HELPFUL HIS TEST ARE TIME CONSUMING BUT JUST TAKE NOTES AND YOU WILL BE FINE HE IS VERY UNDERSTANDING
Professor Beals was my best professor this semester, he was super chill and understanding, and all he asks is that you attend regularly (which you get extra credit for) and do the like 5 or 6 assignments total for the semester. Powerpoints are not posted to canvas so attendance and notes are essential-- otherwise, super easygoing and fun class.
by far the best professor ive had, hes so funny when he says out of pocket things. Class was easy, just need to show up and do the assignments on time.
Professor Beals is a great professor. His way of teaching is unique but very effective. Make sure to pay attention to and take notes. He does not give a midterm - which I appreciated. The assignments require reading and some research but very manageable. I recommend that everyone takes his class. Attendance is for a grade!
A history class that will not bore you! If you take notes than it's an easy A+. Took both of his History classes and enjoyed both. Mr. Beals is fun, witty and quirky.
Funny and understanding guy. Cares about what he's teaching you so don't be afraid to ask for clarification. Attendance is mandatory (better if you go), he doesn't post his lecture slides on Canvas + his test review lectures are so insanely helpful. Only got a B because I didn't do the final. No other assignments besides the tests & 2 short papers.
Great instructor! He's really funny and genuinely cares about teaching his students. Definitely recommend taking his class.
I had him for my summer semester; you can clearly tell he loves what he does. A very caring and helpful professor, I would definitely take his class again.
Mr. Beals is a funny and great teacher. Class is never boring. All his exams are essay/written tests, so don't procrastinate. If you space out the workload, take good notes, and actually go to class, then you should get an A+. I ended the class with 103%; you just need to do all his assignments on time. I highly recommend taking him.
Amazing professor. No textbooks needed, but does take roll call for points occasionally. Only 4 tests and 4 quizzes, and two writing assignments(canvas). The quizzes were quick 10 question multiple-choice. Tests were 10 question short answer. The Two writing assignments were about a ~500 word long essay. No midterms or finals, was also super funny.
The slideshow notes provided by this professor are extremely vague, to the point where I never feel entirely prepared for any test he may give, no matter how hard I study. In addition, CSN seems to love to hire history professors who don't know how to keep their personal politics/religion out of the classroom.
Connects past events with current events, tries to make it not boring lol communicative I had a problem and he listened and helped. respects personal space I felt comfortable
lots of stories about nevada history. I felt comfortable in class, works with students says do your best, i liked him because he talked about different points of view
Enjoyed the history discussions, hearing impaired so a bit loud, helped me when I didn't understand some topics, funny i learned a lot cool
Very, very funny. He always helped clarify things so that I could understand his material. Has funny stories. I learned a lot about Nevada. As long as you take notes, you're good for the tests and the writing sections. No midterms or finals. There were only 2 writing assignments; the last one was fun, and 4 tests/quizzes. Overall, a great teacher.
Great teacher. He always helped clarify things so that I could understand his material. Has funny stories and side jokes. As long as you take notes, you're good for the tests and the writing sections. No midterms or finals. He always made class fun, not boring. There were only 2 writing assignments and 4 tests/quizzes. Would definitely recommend.
If you need a history credit, TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! Does he read off of his slideshows sometimes? Yes. Does he need better pics for his slideshows? Yes. Can it get boring? It's history, people!! Of course, it gets boring sometimes! He tries his best to make it fun, and honestly, I think he's hilarious. It's Mr. Beals, I mean, come on. IYKYK.
Mr.Beals is fantastic! His class is lecture-heavy with a free textbook online. I would skim the textbook, write down vocabulary words, and then take notes during his lectures in class. There were two writing assignments and about four exams. I would take this class again. Beals is amazing!
I used to think I wouldn't like History, but Mr. Beals made it genuinely enjoyable. His class is easy if you just read, participate, and take notes—especially since he wrote the textbook himself. He's also super helpful and responsive. Highly recommend!
I took Professor Beals for history 101 and 102. He is super funny! He might joke around with you, but it makes class more fun. I highly recommend him to anyone wishing to have an amazing history professor. If I had to take another history class, it would be with him.
He is a great teacher overall with a fun and easy class that could never bore you! He has simple assignments that can teach you a lot especially listening to his lectures that can later on provide information for assignments given to you. Whenever he might feel some confusion with you, he will clarify it and make sure he is being respectful.
Beals is a great teacher and I would recommend him to anyone. The e-book can get a bit annoying but it you will get a 5/5 if you give personal thoughts. The lectures correlate with the tests, but all you need are the slides and the e-book to answer the questions. I am going to take his 102 class and am super excited.
Mr. Beals talks about different viewpoints and does have strong opinions but I feel he respects other opinions he tells when he's just giving his opions. Great class, read a lot lectures a lot fun and informative class.
I'd rather fight in the Vietnam War than take his class. He says out-of-pocket stuff all the time and brushes it off by saying, "It's okay," but it was, in fact, not okay. My friends and I were constantly feeling uncomfortable.
He's passionate about history, but his lecture style wasn't very helpful since he talks the whole time and didn't cover many test topics. The free online textbook helps but has heavy reading. There are 4 tests with multiple choice and 250-word responses. Overall, the class is easy with extra credit, but I didn't like the lectures.
He is a very easy professor, tests were not hard, gives whole week to take them, can use lectures, internet, anything on tests. Attendance mandatory but gives seven days you can miss. everything is due at the end of the semester so nothing is late in his class. Very good professor and only one essay 500 words.
Mr beals is hilarious and I think he is one of my favorite professors so far! All you have to do is follow the text book which is super interactive and easy. He obviously cares about his subject and is passionate about teaching. Overall there are around 16 lectures and 14 chapters of the textbook with only 10 being mandatory assignments. Take him!
I took him a few semesters ago. Still one of my favorite professors I've had. Very passionate about history. Keeps lectures interesting (if you have a general interest in history this helps). There was a good amount of reading, but it's an appropriate amount for a 100 level class. Would take again!
Cool to listen too, learned lots of stuff I didn't know. Told us to study as well, mentions things in class that are itneresting so I'd go and google it. has trouble hearing so a bit loud, but he'll quiet down if you ask. liked that he gave different points of view, wants you to think and question.
I liked the lectures and the enthusiasm and humor. I didn't do as well, my fault, didn't take good notes. tests part multiple choice (or guess as he says haha) and part essay.
Liked him, essay test and ebook quizzes, good teacher cares
ebook cool, liked class, gets you thinking, gives different viewpoints
Great class, gives different points of view, interpretations, has trouble hearing so gets loud sometimes,
liked the youtube channel helped the lecture in class. felt safe in class.
Great class, I should have taken more notes,
