Goodsell wasn't very helpful. It didn't seem to me like he wanted us to do well in the class. For the final out of all we had learned in the whole book he wouldn't even hint to us what we might need to study for in particular. He didn't care.
Doesn't really know how to teach

I loved his class. I felt he did a good job explaining the topic. He was very reasonable on all his tests and the homework was good. Great professor!
Can't teach to save his life. Has warped sense of student responsibility. Thinks all he has to do is clearly teach the material. Very nieve.
He's a really good guy but his methods of teaching don't help me to learn. Doesn't take time to go over homework and isn't organized at all in his teaching. Again, nothing against him just his teaching style. It could use a lot of work.
Bro Goodsell is a nice guy. He does a good job explaining in class... but he's never in his office and when he is he's annoyed when students ask for help. I don't think he understands that he's here for the students not the research. But other than that the class was easy. We did a few simple worksheets and takehome tests. They were relatively easy
I loved his class!! Very nice and very helpful!! Lots of hw that can either help your grade (if you do it all) or bring it way down if you dont. If you go and see him then he will always find a way to help you out. And he will always be there if you tell him before hand that you are coming.
Brother Goodsell is a really nice person, but not a very good math teacher. The only reason to go to class is to turn in your daily assignments. Besides that you basically have to teach yourself the material. His tests are way hard, but he is really good about helping you with any questions you have if you go in during his office hours.
Not the best math teacher, but he shows funny clips every Friday. It is a must to take advantage of his extra credit opportunities by going up to the board as much as possible. Hard tests!
Great Professor. I learned a lot about odes. I would recommend him.
Bro. Goodsell is a great math teacher. Believe it or not, he has a good sense of humor, its just really dry. He teaches the content clearly, but expects you to stretch a little in the homework, but he doesn't leave you without a clue.
Brother Goodsell is a great man who knows a lot, but I don't like his teaching methods.
This class is REALLY hard.
Your grade in bro. Goodsell's class is entirely dependent on your homework. Not only if you completed your homework, but if the answers are correct. Homework every day, 10 points each assignment. We've only had one test & the sem. is almost over. It was only worth about 100 pts. I think it's unfair to be graded on HW because that's were you messup
Mr. Goodsell is a great guy but doesn't seem to understand how to teach his math classes clearly.
He doesn't go over how to do all the problems he expects you to know how to solve. He is a great person, but he takes a very long time to go over material.
awesome teacher!!! i'd take another class from him. his teaching style is unique but he explains things really well.
His teaching style did not help me at all.I just slept through his classes and got a tutor to actually teach me the material. If I were you, I would find another professor.
Don't take this teacher. Doesn't explain content well at all, and needs help in learning how to teach. Find a different professor who is here for the students.
I actually enjoyed his funny dry comments because they are so out of the ordinary. He also had some fun by setting up practicums and also is more than willing to help you outside of class in his office. I did so, and he clarified it very well. During class, I slept a little, but he allows the calculator and has good tests.
I loved Bro. Goodsell. He has a very dry sense of humor. He worked at the pace of the students in the class, not moving on until we were ready. He explained concepts very clearly. He lectures a bit, but since I enjoy learning the history of math I found it interesting. The final is more of an "extra challenge" after the final project is done.
Brother Goodsell is great. Sometimes you just have to shake your head because he is a little out there but at least he keeps you laughing. The class is not hard as long as you don't put your proofs portfolio off. Do it early!
Brother Goodsell is a humble, nice teacher who is willing to work with you in most cases but I didn't learn a lot from his class and a lot of the stuff we did I'm pretty sure I wont use in the "real world". He doesn't teach very straight forward and it'll save you time just to teach yourself.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. Very willing to help you if you don't get the material, and his tests are really easy. Some things he went over in class were a little bit confusing, but if you ask him for help or look it up yourself you'll be fine. It's a pretty easy class.
Br. Goodsell really knows his stuff and explains concepts very clearly. His sense of humor is dry but hilarious once you get used to it. He is flexible on HW due dates, especially when most of the students struggle with a particular assignment. When he is in his office he is usually willing to help - catch him after class for help.
He knows his stuff, but could use a little teacher training. It's not really that important if you know your stuff and you can't teach it. Teaching style is strictly traditional lecture format. He just does what I am sure was done to him. He could be a great teacher he just needs to study up on how to teach.
He is great. Takes lots of time to make sure you understand WHY a concept works. Gave me alot of confidence about taking calculus. Very reasonable, tests are not difficult.
Great teacher. I have ever understood principles of my math classes as I have with him teaching. He is funny. His class is a decent amount of work and his tests aren't very hard. Great at giving partial credit. He's on your side.
Don't take him for this class. He is a very nice man with a dry sense of humor. He's very smart, but does not know how to teach. Has TA grade asgnmnts, and a lot of times the TA grades incorrectly...and it's near impossible to get it fixed. Gets behind in grading often. He basically wants you to teach yourself, but I ended up unlearning what I knew
Wow, a great math class! Bro. Goodsell made things interesting, and helped us find applications for what we were learning. He understands the differences between the mathematician mindset, and those of the physics and engineering majors he teaches. We joked with each other, it was a great class.
I really thought the teacher explained things a lot better than the book did.
Bro Goodsell is a good teacher. If you do your homework and listen in class you will do well in his class.
I think this teacher is a good teacher. You need to keep up with the class if you want a good grade in his class.
Bro. Goodsell is a great teacher. Although quiet, he's really fun and is more than willing to help his students. He's also very organized.
its a stupid class, but everyone has to take it, so take ACTUALLY teaches, which comes in handy to learn math for the tests. easy grader, too.
Goodsell is brilliant. His grading is fair and he genuinely cares about his students. But his teaching style leaves something to be desired. His classes are almost purely lecture based. You will do well if you work hard and have an affinity for math, but his teaching style forces you to develop an understanding of the material on your own.
Calculus I class is hard because it is new math to most of us. Prof. Goodsell is good about following his syllabus and his tests are graded by your work. He gives a lot of partial credit on HW and tests so if you do the right work but then get the wrong answer, you could get 6 or710 instead of a zero like on a multiple choice exam.
Man he is awesome. He is exceptionally lenient on grading. His tests average about 4 hours for me. He is a great teacher if you stay up with the class. I haven't taken a math class in 2 years, and he formats the class so I feel like that wasn't that bad.
He's a good teacher. His tests are hard, so be sure to study. Do the homework and learn how to solve the problems. He gives credit for effort on the tests - which helps! I spent a lot of time in the math lab, working with the TA's and also got tutoring there. I'd take him again.
I took trigonometry from Brother Goodsell. He is a great guy, and would say funny jokes throughout class. It was a block class, so it was pretty fast paced, with homework due every day (usually took 1 to 2 hours to do each assignment). Its hard to get good grades on the homework, as he teaches the basics, and homework asks for advanced work.
As nice as Brother Goodsell may be he doesn't engage the students in the lecture at all. Plan on listening to him explain new concepts and then not allowing practice in class. He is very intelligent but struggles to effectively convey that knowledge to students. It is difficult to follow along in class and impossible without doing all the homework.
Bro. Goodsell is a mathematician but one of the most down-to-earth ones. His tests weren't as bad as I thought, but obviously you'll still need to study. Everything in short, he was an awesome teacher. Professional with dry humor, which is great for a math class. I wouldn't have passed the class if it wasn't for him and his teaching style.
B. Goodsell is great! He is very flexible. He follows the book. What I really like. HW turned in weekly. Exams in class and 3 last questions at home. He does not see we need a lot of work to learn. His lectures are slow, no rush! this is great for me. He will follow class pace.
Great math teacher. If you're sick of teachers who don't teach, you'll love Goodsell. Class is lecture based. Don't be shy about asking questions midlecture- he's good at answering them, but will just keep going if no-one interrupts. I felt like 215 was easier than 112, just because he made things simple and straightforward. Helpful and merciful.
Nice guy but he is very traditional (lectures with very few examples when he teaches). Almost everyday has homework, but it's not too much and a week's homework isn't due till the following week's Tuesday. Every week a one or two question quiz on the week's subject. Tests are worth a lot and have very few questions. Also doesn't respond to emails.
Lots of homework and few tests (3 and the final). Homework is due every day, but it help to understand the concepts. It basically replaced studying for me. Brother Goodsell gives a lecture every day and then does one or 2 practice problems at the end of class. Tests are given in class and are VERY reasonable (no trick questions, tests understanding
Brother Goodsell is a great guy. He loves math and teaches really clearly. He has an old school lecture style but he is great. Tests are in class and he does things really simple. Stop reading these reviews and go add him!!
He's a great teacher to take if you plan on learning math outside class with the help of things like Kahn Academy. However, if you are looking for a class where you can attend and learn, DON'T TAKE HIM. He has a great policy on homework. Although late work isn't accepted, every tuesday is when the previous week's is due. There's a quiz every friday
Brother Goodsell is the Best Math teacher I've had. He is very articulate in his lectures. He goes through a little history to make sure you know where what applications came from. And sometimes you find out that some of the words are just dumb words that the human race made up. He puts himself in the students' shoes to understand their questions.
Bro. Goodsell loves to lecture, he will explain the history of the formulas for 40 minutes of the class and give one or two examples before leaving you to do hours of online hw. I had to learn everything through the hw program (thank goodness for it), not easy, but doable. Test are in class, 1hr only. He is very lenient with grading tests though.
Brother Goodsell is a pretty good teacher and is very interested in the subject. The first section (section 5) was pretty easy then it gets extremely difficult with section 6 then again section 7 is much easier. If you are going to take this class I recommend getting a tutor to help you review what you learned in class.
Brother Goodsell is the best Calculus teacher at BYUI. There are only 3 tests so you have to do well on them, but he usually lets you use a notecard. Quizzes every week, just go to class and they will be easy. Compared to what I saw other friends doing in there CALC class, whatever I was doing always seemed easier. Final was easy. Use tutors, helps
He is a good teacher. Explains things well. The best part is that he has three tests and final. You can use a notecard on the tests and a whole one side sheet of paper on the final. Tests are in class, relatively short, take home portion and pretty easy. Pay attention and understand the homework and youll do fine.
Great math professor. He explains things very clearly and is happy to answer any questions that come up mid-lecture. He allows note cards in the tests that arent very hard in the first place. Takes a very practical approach to calculus, understanding that if we need calculus in the industry we will simply look things up if we don't remember it.
Brother Goodsell is all-around a great teacher. Keep up with his notes and his lectures you will be fine. Every Friday there was quiz, one question about the material covered that same week. His tests are like his quizzes and he provides a review for each test. All tests including final are in the class, its MATH, either you understand it or don't!
Overal a good guy, but goes off on random tangents gives way too much hw and if you take him you better plan on teaching yourself Calculus.
Great professor. Took him for 112 and 215. Tests are in class and he allows note cards.
He taught the reason of why we do things in math and explains things really well! I was terrified for this class but it was my favorite of the semester! He doesn't like the testing center so all the tests are in class, no bubble sheets!:) He also loves to joke around! He explained things in a way that I could understand! My favorite teacher so far!
This is the second class Ive taken with brother Goodsell and he is the best math teacher I have taken here. His tests wont completely break you if you dont do well, homework is a big part of your grade. He is pretty generous when it comes to grading tests. He explains the why behind things and will take time to help you if you need it.
Brother Goodsell gives you exactly what you need. He doesn't give busy work or even make you memorize formulas that you're going to forget anyway. All you had to do was the MyMathLab HW and exams that actually tested your knowledge. Phenomenal math teacher. If you skip, you will suffer; especially on exam review days. Write everything down!!
Brother Goodsell is amazing! He teaches you what you need to know and is good at explaining what students have questions about. He is very clear about what the goal of the lecture is, and he is very good at relating to his students.
The homework is due once a week, but if you procrastinate on doing it, it will be difficult. He allows notes and wolfram alpha on his tests. Amazing man. His lectures are very funny.
Worst math teacher Ive ever had. Doesnt ever come to class with a lesson plan just teaches from memory and looks at the textbook occasionally. Homework is online and easy when looking at the examples they provide. I came to class everyday and learn nothing from him. Test/Final review in class is worthless. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Brother Goodsell is one of my favorite professors, he is very caring. If he doesn't cover the material well, he won't test you on it. Tests have a take home portion, and are a lot easier than the homework. He will sometimes give out extra credit for showing up to class. His lectures are educational and funny. Just a good man altogether. Highly rec
Nice but lectured a lot
He is an incredible teacher. You NEED to be in class, he covers some very difficult topics and it takes time to understand them. If you ask questions he will take the time during the class to help you understand and catch you up. He is always understanding of outside activities and things.
Brother Goodsell is an amazing teacher and I can't recommend him enough! He has really great lectures and all of his tests are take-home with a notecard. (Also he has great taste in movies and music).
He does a great job in answering students questions regardless of how many are asked. It's pretty much a simple class with simple quizzes, and tests. Nevertheless, he doesn't do a great job in teaching Calculus towards understanding. I didn't really understand Calc or the "why" behind it. He just copies and pastes from the textbook for his lectures
Bro. Goodsell isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed him. He is very lecture heavy, but his lectures were clear and concise for me. He won't play the "discover the subject on your own" game like other BYU-I profs do, which is extremely refreshing. Take good notes in his class, and you'll be perfectly fine. More BYU-I profs should be like Bro. Goodsell.
Prof. Goodsell portrays concepts in their simplest form, which can be very helpful for alot of students. However he doesn't provide very many examples in class, and at the end of class, I often feel like I could have learned aot more than I did, and that we only scratched the surface. Some may consider this an upside, to easily absorb concepts.
He is my favorite math teacher that I have ever had. The class is difficult, but by attending class and doing the homework, you will do amazingly in it. His tests are straightforward and he lets you use a note card which helps so much. The lectures were hard for my friends to pay attention to, but I thought they were intriguing.
Great Professor. Answers any questions you have. He explains things in a practical and relatable manner, and gives you time to absorb the content. His lectures are thorough. He could provide more in class examples of problems, but its nothing that you can't work out in office hours, or tutoring during homework.
He has a slight speech impediment so his annunciation, combined with a really (really) soft old man voice, can make it hard to hear what he's saying, (Sitting in front of class and in back). His teaching was more copy/paste from textbook and assured they worked. No examples, on your own practice, or clear idea of application or when to use in HW.
Brother Goodsell is an amazing teacher. He is good at answering questions, he doesn't assume that everyone knows about calculus already. He has an extremely lenient test-taking and homework policy. My only issue with him is that he is not the best at answering e-mails.
I really liked Brother Goodsell. He taught like the class was new to every subject, so no required readings. He actually TEACHES. He is good about answering questions any time there are any. Tests are a high portion of your grade, but he gives a really good review the day before. Also the tests are in class so that's super helpful.
Brother Goodsell is a good teacher, but the lectures are long and a little boring. The homework is online on Pearson and is pretty easy to follow but takes a long time. The tests are pretty hard but he allows you to use resources and there is a take-home portion. I would recommend him to anyone in mechanical engineering.
Great guy, mostly lecturers, but makes concepts easy to understand with real life examples.
The homework is the killer of joy and students' souls. But Brother Goodsell is entertaining and makes math easy(well, less painful. It's mv calc, it'll never actually be easy) I would definitely take him again. I hope I don't have to because I would really like to pass this class, but if I don't, he will be blessed to see my face in his class again
Absolutely amazing teacher! I was putting in more work than normal into the class, but his lectures helped clear things up and made it a lot easier to understand. He grades fairly and does some homework problems that would be difficult to do alone in class. He answers questions and shows ways to prove and solve things easier. 10/10!
Brother Goodsell is an absolute king. Going into precalc I was told there were no good teachers... not true!!! Goodsell tells the funniest stories and jokes. He knows his stuff and will help you understand it better if you need the help, he will meet with you outside of class!! He grades very mercifully, and is a literal angel. I respect that man.
His understanding of math is great. He is however unable to teach it in a way that is understandable. His lectures consist of him talking at you for an hour with useless tangents that have absolutely nothing to do with Calculus. You must rely on the Textbook 100% to learn the material. Good luck if you ever need to reach him outside of class.
Honestly, I have taken many math classes throughout my life; many have been about completing many exercises and learning the process, which I like. However, I never had a teacher explain how math works; I like it a lot; yes, the class requires a little extra effort and an ability to concentrate, but I think it's worth it.
No matter who the professor is, Math 112x is a challenging course. Professor Goodsell's teaching style is lecture saturated but if you ask questions especially over the HW he will take the time to review it. He has a very lenient exam policy which encourages students to excel and receive satisfactory grades. Unsure about Calculus? Take Goodsell!
He might be the nicest professor on campus. He's incredibly respectful, and his lectures are thorough. He's more than happy to explain what you don't understand, and has a good sense of music. He collects homework once a week, and goes over each exam to make sure you know what you missed. An amazing person, and I wish I could take his class again.
I took this class hoping to improve my understanding of trigonometry, that didn't happen. While the teacher is nice, it often felt like he wasn't fully engaged. The lessons didn't align well with the homework, and without an answer key, keeping a good grade was a struggle. His teaching style lacked energy, which made it harder to stay motivated.
Brother Goodsell does an excellent job presenting the material in a clear way that helps the students understand calculus. I loved his examples, jokes, and applications. He is a little soft spoken, so pay attention as he teaches. If you put forth your best effort, I promise you will succeed. The class is hard, but that's the nature of calculus.
Bro Goodsell, has a good way of teaching mathematics. He even includes real life examples in his classes. And he walks us through the problem, so we can understand it fully. Even meets with us if we need help. However, I feel like the book was complicated for us, even tutors at the tutoring center had doubts on the problems, and couldn't solve it.
His frequent lectures are organized and informative. He teaches the why of calculus and makes you feel like you discovered secrets of the universe. He simplifies concepts without sounding pretentious, assigns manageable homework, and gives fair tests focused on the material. He is kind and takes questions. There are daily attendance codes in class.
His professional abilities are second to none. He is amazing at teaching and very knowledgeable. He is very open to answering questions, even stopping lectures to help you understand what he is teaching. His ability to convey material is superb. His lectures are great because he is open to answering all the questions thrown at him.
Bro Goodsell is awesome. He would always listen to requests about assignment extensions, grading, clarifying subjects. The HW doesn't always match what he teaches 1:1. Grade is heavily dependent upon tests which there are only 2 of, but they are much easier than the HW. Use organicchemistrytutor trig and AI and you'll be fine. Doesnt check email.
