great fella, knows his weather, super hard but very fair! very approachable nice person! would definitely take him again!
I agree, he's great. He knows and lives his passion and he shares his knowledge with the students. It's tough but he is a fair grader and he's entertaining in class. I'd take any class he took again, I learned a lot!
He's an aggie but he's still very cool. Great guy, great class.
Troy Kimmel is a great prof who cares about his students. He helped a classmate of mine during a medical emergency, and was sincere when he e-mailed everyone to thank them for their help. Hard class, but enjoyable. Very passionate about his subject, and personable.
great teacher, very easy to talk to and cares about his students! I'd take again in a heartbeat!
This guy was an okay instructor, but a total ass when you tried to talk to him outside of lecture. The material wasn't difficult but the exams were kind of tricky. You really have to study to make a B.
Great Instructor, but not easy and a little "cocky". Be prepared to study A LOT for this class. If you need help, feel free to visit him in his office hours. He is very friendly and helpful outside of class.

Kimmel is a nice guy, but the tests really blow. Material is fairly decent, but the tests are VERY tricky. Go to every lecture, take notes, & STUDY.
This class was awesome! I learned a LOT about weather and i would take this class again if I could!
Interesting class, very appraoachable and helpful, and generally entertaining. I wish I would have saved it for a Fall/Spring class instead of Summer.
He is a great, professor! It is a class where one can get an A. His exams are a bit challenging, but all you have to do is study to pass. He gives very clear material for these. It is a rather interesting class, he will not put you to sleep. I would take it again anytime.
Great class! He's extremely passionate about the material, he's also the chief meteorologist for KEYE TV, so of course he would be! The exams are tough, but easier if you go over the readings and attend class. If you do well enough on the exams, you are eligible to skip the final. He takes attendance randomly, so be sure to show up to class.
Took it my freshman year, and found it to be a difficult class. Even when I studied I found myself having low scores on the tests. However, later I noticed I just wasn't studying the right way. Difficult class, but if you put effort into it you'll do fine. Good teacher, seems to have good knowledge about the subject, and cares about his students.
Very funny professor; very conservative. Really wants his students to succeed but the tests are really hard and specific. If you study enough though, you should do fine and you'll be able to get an A.
Tests are very easy to study for and have a predictable outline. Powerpoints not posted. Don't go to office hours, complete waste of your time because he's a total jerk whose only answer to any question is "It's in your notes."
He knows what he's talking about and teaches very clearly. Class attendance is mandatory for an A. However, no homework and little studying. He lets you drop one test grade. Take good notes and study when the time comes and an A is definitely possible
Great teacher and guy, hard class though. Even when i studied for hours, i found myself coming up short on my expectations somehow. To sum it up, it was a fun class and more interesting than i thought it would be but the tests are definitely tricky and the questions very specific and nit picky. Not an easy A by any means.
Awesome teacher/class. Professor is an actual weatherman so he makes class interesting with real life examples. Highly recommend taking this class even if the tests are somewhat tricky
This class is so overrated. At first he seems endearing and I like that he cares so much, but after a certain point I think he just likes having an audience listen to him speak. The tests are difficult too due to the vast amounts of information you're expected to know. A ridiculous amount topics that don't even build on each other.
The lectures are interesting, but there's a ridiculous amount of information you're expected to know for the exams. No study sheet. It's basically "memorize every little thing I've said over the past 8 hours of lecture". I killed myself for the 98 I got on the first exam. I'm already 12 hours into studying for the second. There's SIX exams total.
The instructor is an actual weatherman, so he is very knowledgeable in the content of this course. All of the exam material is covered in class and he gives random, easy quizzes for attendance. I never bought the textbook and was able to make an A on all of my exams, which aren't difficult. Study your notes for around 3 hours for each exam for an A
Amazing instructor. Majoring in Finance & Economics but I have to admit that I loved this class.
A class for non-majors that requires more studying and dedication than some of my upper-division classes. Exams were very difficult for me, and even though I found his lectures interesting, the material itself was horribly boring in my opinion. GPA also dropped because of this class.
What he says in lectures are EXACTLY what are on the tests which are all multiple choice. Also, he's damn hilarious.
Troy was phenomenal. His lectures are organized, and entertaining. He has a great sense of humor. Test are tough but everything you need to succeed in this class are given in his lecture notes. Take good notes and study them well. Good luck!
Mr. Kimmel has been one of my favorite lecturers at UT. He is an honest-to-God weatherman and lectures with a booming, Texan voice. He's funny and his lectures are interesting, which contain a lot of info but he is really great at breaking all of the concepts down. Tests aren't too hard if you GO TO CLASS! Everything you need to pass is in lecture.
He is so ignorant to the fact that he has a lot of notes and wont let you type them. His tests are hard but I it is all in his lecture so you need to go to class. He seems not speak his mind and may be rude. I feel he is bitter about people cheating in his class that he made it so difficult from previous semesters.
Troy's class was fabulous! His Lectures are very well organized and interesting. He has a wonderful sense of humor, and is always willing to help in office hours if you have concerns or questions. Study hard for the tests and you will do well. Take this class, you won't regret it!
Worst prof ever. Class is all powerpoint and he is rude to students. He changed the curriculum because previous students cheated and takes it out on us. He is lazy and won't help during office hours. He literally just repeats what the notes says louder and slower. Exams are lecture based so there's no way to self teach. The salt is real af...
He clearly got burned by some cheaters and has gone to great lengths to make sure it doesn't happen again. According to friends that took the class in the past it was an easy A but he has changed the way the class is taught and made the exams more difficult. No phonescomputer and lots of notes. I got an 89 :-
Kimmel is a kind and caring professor; he wants you to do well. That being said, he wants you to learn. If you attend all the lectures and study well, you will do well. A lot of the material is pretty straight forward memorization (some concepts, but not too many). He makes jokes in class too, which helps move the lectures along.
There are four multiple choice tests, the lowest grade of which he drops. The final is also multiple choice. There is also a multiple choice exam on world geography. I never opened the textbook; all exam material is based off of lecture. He takes attendance sometimes and covers a lot of material in class, so definitely go!
He grades on a points-based system so dropping tests actually hurts you in the end unless you make all A's so be sure to study really well for tests. All of the tests come from lecture material so you need to go to lecture. DO NOT procrastinate on the map test, it's a horrible quality map and it takes way too long to take so be prepared.
Dr. Kimmel is a great professor. He is hilarious, relatively easy to understand, and makes the class really engaging. His lecture-note based tests are very intense, and be prepared to pay close attention to the lecture notes so you can do well on tests. In addition to switching to lecture and book based notes, Dr. Kimmel is a really good professor.
Class isn't too hard but he made some suicide jokes that were pretty offensive.
Kimmel is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. I took this class to knock out a science and do not regret it at all. As long as you go to class and take good notes, you'll be fine. He is hilarious, which keeps me awake and interested in class. The tests are very straight forward, info is straight from lecture. Take it!
He's overall a really great professor. Weather and climate was not something I was expecting to find interesting, and some of it was a little boring, but for the most part he held everyone's interest. He's a really funny guy who's passionate about meteorology, and it shows in his lectures. If you need help he's there in office hours or by phone.
Do not take this class just to fulfill a science credit. For a non-major, this class is a waste of time. Too much time and effort put into a class that a non-major has no interest in, only to take a more difficult test. Again, do not take this class.
A really great professor. He makes the lectures interesting and relates it to whats going on around us right now. You need to go to class and take good notes. All his tests are based on lectures so you honestly don't need the book. The lowest test grade is also dropped. You just really need to go over the notes before the tests and youll be fine
If you do not have a burning fiery passion deep in your bones to learn every scientific detail of the weather, don't take this class. It was probably the hardest class I've taken at UT. Wouldn't recommend unless you LOVE the topic & aren't taking any other hard classes
Its pretty simple in this class: Go to every class, write down the powerpoint slides and then memorize them and you will get an A on every tests. Professor Kimmel is engaging and his office hours are very helpful and he is always there for you.
Do NOT take this class. This was the worst class i've taken all of college. I ended up using a Q drop for it. I went to every class and copied down all the notes (you aren't allowed to use a computer and he doesn't let you print off notes). Worst class i've ever taken. DO NOT TAKE
I do not recommend this class. The classes are really boring, and it is really hard to understand the professor while he is talking (he has a terrible strong accent, and I'm from California.) The subject is however really interesting, but its is so boring everything is on powerpoint.
I'm not sure why everyone hates this class, I've never learned so much from a single class in my life. Yes, it's hard, but if you go to every lecture and take GOOD notes you'll be fine. He's always there for office hours and genuinely wants to help you understand the material. Also, he's very funny!
This guy is way too anal about his class. Attendance is mandatory because he does not post presentations. Hand written notes only. He rants on and on and these rants will be on the exams. "And folks let me tell you" blah blah blah. He was furious with our class when he "discovered" we created a Facebook group to study! Bottom line. Horrible.
Terrible professor that doesn't understand that this class is for non majors. His lectures are long. Its literally pages of information copied and pasted on a powerpoint slide. He's rude and says really insensitive things. Tests are hard and he isn't really there for you. I went to office hours multiple times and he would tell me to reread my notes
Whoever wrote the previous comments had some real mean streaks, because I took Troy Kimmel for the Geography 301 and 333 courses, and they were outstanding. The course material, while lecture based, is very interesting, he is willing to help the students out, has convenient office hours, allows group study, and he is a professor I highly recommend.
Mr. Kimmel is an amusing guy, I enjoyed his class. Some people won't like his humor, but I thought he was funny. I found the class pretty easy, but non-science majors have told me this class is hard. Just show up for class (very lecture-based and he doesn't publish his PowerPoint slides) and study for tests; you'll be fine.
Kimmel used to be a meteorologist. This is Weather and Climate. They fit perfectly, and it shows because he knows his stuff. He's a bit rude at times, and maybe even a tad bit racist (he'll tell you he's an Aggie), but he's well worth it. Everything that's on the test will be something he says in class, and there's no homework.
Worst instructor in my experience at UT. He's a loudmouth ham, very conservative, loves the sound of his own voice since he used to be on TV. He has no business in a classroom anywhere
Horrible Class. He needed to take a public speaking class before he becomes a teacher. Very dry and boring class with no critical thinking of any kind. Horrible Professor, Horrible Class. Take this class at ACC or a different class to meet the requirement.
This class was great! Skipping class is a no-go unless you have some access to the notes via classmates. No computers are allowed in class. Taking clear notes and attending all of the office hours is the key to passing the class. I didn't need the books in my class- everything came from the book.
Easy class because the tests are word-for-word from lecture notes, nothing from the book. The material itself is kind of dry and may be a little difficult for some, it wasn't that bad. Kimmel is a great lecturer (a little hammy though), and he simplifies a lot of the material because of all the non-majors. Low-stress way to get your science credit.
great class! I took this for my science I credit and it was a fairly easy credit to earn! he has 4 tests + a shorter geography test, + a final, and one is dropped. none of the tests were too hard!! I got an A, B, B, C on tests and B on final, ended with an A-! no textbook required, ALL FROM LECTURE. he's a fun guy!
Troy seems like a great guy, don't get me wrong. What REALLY makes this class difficult, something you should be aware of, is that he is EXTREMELY old fashioned. Example: I had him for the online GRG301K, and he won't post the videos of his lectures to view post-class like all the other online classes. Get ready to live in his office to pass.
Fabulous teacher! I'm only in my 2nd semester of college but by far my favorite class and professor!! The class is an hour and a half but I could listen to him teach for longer!! He is hilarious!!
Took 301K, online. He jams TOO MUCH information into the semester. He talks too fast, but definitely knows his stuff. I'm not a science guy so the material was very boring and dry and difficult for me. If you REALLY study for the exams you'll do well. Don't take the online class- it has problems. Also he doesn't post the lectures! Take good notes
Probably one of the easier science courses at UT, but still difficult. He has a lot to say & is informative; tries to break down the material into laymen's terms. There is so much material & technical info that it's still difficult. No PowerPoints on Canvas, periodic attendance checks. Six exams. But, worse exam is dropped. No other assignments.
The tests are next to impossible, even with going to class every day and taking notes, the majority of the questions will be about stuff you haven't even heard of before. He has office hours where you can meet with him and go over your test if you want. Highly recommend on going into his office hours to show you "care" even if you don't, he notices
Honestly think some of the reviews are too harsh on the guy. Simply be good at taking lecture notes, keep up with the work, ask questions either in class or at his office hours when you dont understand. Be proactive. Negatives are simply that it is a tech free class and he doesnt supply lecture recordings or out of class powerpoints. Go to class!
I switched into his class late and it was the best decision I made! He is SO engaging and the stuff we learn in class is easily applied to our lives!! I am never ever bored in his class and I never thought I would enjoy learning about weather so much All his 4 tests (he drops one) are lecture based! Did not even mind it being non-tech
Troy's a good lecturer and is available almost every day during office hours. The class has 5 total tests (lowest is dropped) that are like 80% of the total grade. and the tests are lecture-based so don't miss class!! He doesn't upload lecture slides so if you miss class you miss all the info. He's a no-nonsense type of guy and he's a good lecturer.

I am so glad I took this class. The only issue I have is that tests are held outside of class; it's not too big of a deal, though. All class days are lectures. And tests are based entirely on lecture materials. So if you take good notes you are good to go! He is great at pacing his powerpoint presentations. He's also fun to listen to. Very invested
Troy is super passionate about weather and climate and it shows in how well prepared he is for lectures. The content is difficult but Troy is such a good stand up guy that he is almost always available to help when needed. Non-tech is kind of a bummer but Troy does not fly through powerpoints giving you plenty of time to write all the info.
Science has never been my thing but best and easiest class I have ever taken! IF YOU ARE GOOD AT MEMORIZING THEN THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU! Troy is an excellent and kind professor and is always available to help outside of class. Also, no phones allowed during class but that is alright
Kimmel clearly knows what he is talking about but the material is very dense, and there is so much material for each exam that it is difficult to muster up the motivation to study. This is an intro class that I'm taking for my second degree, and I'm doing better in upper division classes that don't require half of the mind numbing memorization.
I took this class as a non-major student just trying to get a science credit. The tests were solely based off of lecture so if you don't go you will not pass. Even if you do go to every class like I did, you have to pay attention to every detail that he says because test questions are the small details that he says. Study your notes word for word.
He is a really engaging professor despite not allowing technology for note taking. I really enjoyed his class. He makes and effort to be available for the students and has office hours on 4 out of 5 week days.
Troy really cares about his students and wants them to succeed, however, tells you straight up that it won't be easy. Memorization skills come in handy. He will talk to you about anything in office hours, so make sure to go, even if you don't think you have any questions. Hardest class I had last semester but was the most enjoyable.
One of the best courses i've taken! I am a non-science major and took this course to fulfill my natural science II credit, best decision I ever made! As long as your okay with attending lectures, and taking notes you'll do great in the course! He's always available for office hours, and really wants to see his students succeed. Highly reccomend!
Good professor overall, just a very difficult class. There is a ton of content expected to be memorized and understood 100% for each exam. Really not many grades outside of exams so you better do well. Tough class, if not your major I would not take, theres definitely easier classes. 4 exams, 1 geography exam , 1 final, and attendance marks.
Troy is probably the best professor I've ever had. The class is entirely lecture based (you don't need to buy the book) so you can't get by with skipping, but he really cares about his students and what he teaches. There's a lot of material for each test so if you don't plan on studying, don't expect an A, but the class is fantastic and so is he.
If you are NOT interested in weather, I would not take this class. If you do find it interesting, this might be for you! His tests are based solely on lecture and he has said he does not care if you read the text. You do need to come to class as he does random attendance checks. A lot of material, but overall easy enough if you memorize your notes!
my favorite class I took this semester!! class is really interesting even though it has nothing to do with my major. I leave class everyday feeling like I actually really learned something, & I love being able to apply my weather skillz in real life lol. Tests aren't too bad if you really study (quizlet!!). stay on top of material & u will b fine!!
You must attend class to pass. He's SUPER nice and wants you to succeed, so go to his office hours! Some people don't care for him, but he's got a good heart and makes funny jokes. He really does care about his students.
If you are not interested in weather, this is not for you. I took this as a non-science major core class and struggled as it was not my biggest interest. Most of Troy's students love him though which makes the class bearable. Class is based on 4 tests, a huge geography test (only 50 points of 1000), attendance questions, and a final.
this isn't your easy blow off class, lots of work needs to be put into this class. it's not hard but lots of time dedicated to straight memorization; defs would not recommend as an 'easy A' class esp if it's your senior year lmao
Prof. Kimmel was a very kind and caring professor, but you will DEFINITELY not pass if you skip the class. I DO NOT recommend taking this class just for the credit unless you are actually interested in this topic. The good thing is he drops the lowest grade, but does not put power points online, which is sad.
Troy is a straight shooter and a stand up character. His lectures are a pleasure to attend and I come away knowing something novel about the weather or reality. The square cap system was used for attendance purposes, however attendance could have been taken without mandating that students purchase the program. Overall, a solid course!
Troy's a great professor but this class is not easy. Really study a lot for each exam and you can get an A. Memorize all of the notes and show up to lecture. I thought the final was a little tricky because it had more charts and numbers and illustrations. Also, the place name exam and attendance are easy grade boosters so don't mess that up.
Kimmel is a funny guy and is very passionate about this subject matter. The lectures can get a little boring at times but you need to pay attention to what he says because that's where the most important information comes from. There are 4 tests, one is dropped, a final, a geography map test, and random attendance questions.
This is definitely not your easy A science class. There are 4 tests, 1 massive geography test that counts very a small amount of your grade, and a cumulative final. Tests are based highly on lecture, literally anything he says can be on it and he says a lot, he's really passionate about the subject. Attendance is randomly taken for a grade
Professor Kimmel seems like a really great guy and was always super nice when I went in for office hours but his class is easily the hardest thing I've ever taken at this school. TAKE A DIFFERENT SCIENCE. He only bases the tests on what he says in class and doesn't put up the powerpoints so studying for the tricky tests is extremely hard
I only missed class once because I was sick, took notes over everything he said and put on the powerpoints, STUDIED, and I still got a D. I felt like some questions on the tests had nothing to do with things he talked about in lecture or at least you have to have a VERY STRONG understanding of the topics, which can be complex. I wish I dropped it!
He obviously loves the topic, but can't teach it well. The only grades for the class are exams based on the lecture. The lecture is based off a dense powerpoint that he doesn't publish for the class. Computer notes are not allowed in his class, so you either have to write fast or have an insanely good memory. I wish I'd dropped this class!
Class is based on 4 exams, all content comes from lectures, does not post slides. Class is loosely based on the textbook but majority of learning is supposed to come from his rambling anecdotes. Not worth the work required from a class that doesn't even have a dept. Can not emphasize enough how much I do not recommend taking Kimmel.
Troy was a great teacher and made it all of the content pretty easy to understand. The exams are based off of anything he says in lecture, and he doesn't post power points online so you HAVE to show up to class and take good notes. 4 MC exams that basically require you to memorize all of your notes(he asks a lot of detail-oriented questions).
He's a great lecturer and really cares about his students. This class is lecture based so listen to everything he has to say. Write it down as well as the lecture slides and you will be fine, but listening is key. He takes attendance randomly with a few easy pop quizzes. Studying lecture notes very well will give you a good grade.
I LOVED TROY! It's very obvious how passionate he is about teaching, and he tries his best to be fair to everyone. Everything on the exams is from lecture (lots of memorization!), so don't skip. He may be a little intimidating, but his office hours are a life-saver. Overall, I really enjoyed this class!
Tests are entirely based on lectures, but lectures are often fun and engaging. Ask questions and talk to him outside of class so he gets to know you a little! Seems tough but is really nice and helpful when you go into office hours and ask him things. Tests were tough and no EC but he wants you to succeed and will help where he can!
Yes this may not be the easiest class you can find at UT. However, none of that matters. Troy Kimmel is a legend and a local hero that is worth meeting and learning under no matter what, not to mention he is so very willing to help you out if you ever struggle. He's funny, passionate, and inspirational.
Despite the overall rating I gave, I actually really liked Troy - he's very funny and likes to get know his students. That being said, his class is WAY TOO HARD! Especially for a core science. Exams (multiple choice) are very, very hard and confusing. Entire class average was in the mid-70s. Certainly not an easy A course. Not good for core either.
Troy Kimmel was absolutely wonderful, hilarious, and very knowledgable on his content. He will gladly answer any questions you have. Definitely come to class, you will miss the pop quizzes and tests are based on lecture material, not the textbook. A must take professor, "folks"! (#iykyk)
GRG301K was definitely my favorite class of freshman year. There is no outside-of-class reading or homework required other than studying for the exams and final. That being said, studying for the exams ahead of time is SO crucial because he bases them entirely off of his lectures and they can get pretty detailed. Overall, Kimmel is the bomb. (-:
I took this class online, which is probably why I struggled. Looking at the other reviews, Troy is really great in-person. However, I struggled to keep up with online lectures and ask questions. I think this class would've been a completely different experience in-person. However, the tests were very difficult coming from online-only learning.
Troy has great reviews for in person, but his online class is very difficult and the whole class is struggling. 4 tests only, he drops lowest. Test completely based on lecture dont buy book. Does not record lecture or give access to powerpoints. Squarecaps randomly for participation so grade is only based on 3 tests and squarecap. goodluck its hard
Don't take this class online. He bases his exams purely on lecture material, but refuses to record lectures or post powerpoints. He gives no reviews but expects you to know specifics and refuses to make accommodations, even when most students are struggling. Makes you buy the textbook but it is never used. Graded only on exams and attendance.
I think Professor Kimmel may usually be a better professor, but this online course is not it. He refuses to record lectures, post powerpoints, or make any sort of study guide. In every other online class I'm taking we at least get one of those. Kimmel seems to be doing the bare minimum for his online course, and it is showing in the class averages.
Troy was not very understanding or accommodating during the pandemic. Lectures were not recorded or shared with us, powerpoints were made unavailable for us to study from, and the required textbook was not even useful as tests were only over lecture material. Don't miss class as he won't help you get the missed material either.
I am not sure if Kimmel is always this way, but avoid this class at all costs during a pandemic. You need to have very speedy note-taking skills, because he does not record lectures, provide powerpoints, etc. I needed to get this class over with, but would not take him again.
Not at all accommodating during pandemic. If you miss a class, there is no way of you catching up. Only grades were through squarecap and the exams. 4 exams; 1 drop. Lectures not recorded, powerpoints not shared, no study guides, no review sessions. Even if you are interested in meteorology, I doubt you would be able to enjoy this class.
- Made the textbook required but never pulled material from the textbook - Never posted his powerpoints or recorded lectures - Never gave test reviews - Anything he said during lecture could be on the test - Moved slowly through the notes
He was not accomodating at all during the pandemic. He refused to record lectures or share the powerpoints, even after being basically begged for them throughout the semester. The textbook was useless, test material was based on lectures and random weird anecdotes?? He seems to be better at in-person teaching but avoid online if you can.
I took this class specifically because Im HORRIBLE with science/math. Yet, throughout this course I struggled greatly. I tried hard, but it was an overwhelming amount of material&constant tests. I was grateful to just barely pass. But Kimmel is kind and caring, just the class was hard and exhausting. Wished I wouldve gone to ACC for the credit.
HARDEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. Don't waste your money on any of the "recommended" textbooks, because the grades only consist of exams based only on his lectures and attendance points. The online course uses PROCTORIO for the exams. Most students take this course for a flag req. but it was seriously WAY too difficult and disengaging .
I initially took this class to see if I was interested in pursuing a minor in the subject. Within the first week, I was ready to drop the course completely. The lectures were not recorded and exams depend on ANYTHING that comes out of the professor's mouth. I ended up sticking it out and actually really enjoying the class and the professor himself.
Really nice guy and you can tell he cares about what he's teaching, just doesn't always have the most organized lectures, doesn't post lecture slides, is very test heavy, and is oftentimes confusing. You'll learn a lot, but definitely not an easy class
This is easily the hardest class I have ever taken. If you miss a single class, you will 100% fail the next test without question. The only things that make up your grade are tests, and tests cover anything that the professor says, even the smallest of things. Lectures are not recorded or uploaded and notes are required to be on paper, not laptops.
Kimmel is so fun and somehow manages not to bore you to death most days. Hes very considerate and just an overall very good prof. Fair warning though, he doesnt record the lectures or put any of his material on canvas so you have to actually listen and take lecture notes or youll be screwed. No homework only attendance and tests.
Troy is one of the best professors at the school. His class has been the most interesting class I've taken so far. You'll constantly hear people complaining about how hard the class is, but if you give it your all for literally just 3 hours a week and really study, you will succeed. No homework, just pay attention in lecture!!!
honestly troy's a great guy and super funny but i don't recommend this class unless you're 1) an amazing test taker or 2) willing to dedicate the next 4 months of your life to clouds! don't bother buying the textbook since everything is lecture based and good luck lol
Professor Kimmel is a good person but this class structure is terrible. It is based on 4 exams and 1 final grade. He allows 0 technology in the classroom and ANYTHING that comes out of his mouth can be on the exam whether or not he explained it well or not. You WILL NOT pass the class if you don't study. It took 3 exams for me to get the hang of it
Prof Kimmels lectures are engaging and interesting, but you will need to write anything that he says for the entirety of the class. The tests are only over lecture material, which is not recorded or posted. I never missed a class, took specific notes, studied and still barely managed a B-. You will learn a lot but its a VERY challenging course.
I don't get his rating. If you enjoy hearing him yell and insult people, sure. Class is not on climate at all, only weather. Had to buy an app so he could take attendance which is mandatory (I don't mind except paying for it). Zero tolerance for technology. Grade is only from exams, entirely based on lectures you must hand write everything he says.
Professor Kimmel covers a wide range of topics in varying degrees of intensity. Topics covered over several lectures will not be on the exam, but subjects mentioned in passing will. The final grade is made of four exams, with no study guides or assignments. The exams are lecture based, so buying the textbook is pointless.
Troy makes him 4 exams and final solely based on lecture. You have to write down nearly everything he says in lecture in order to study. Buying the textbook is *useless* and I got an A without opening the book once. His lectures are unnecessarily intense and attendance is tracked by SquareCap ($). Make a GroupMe to exchange class notes.
While everyone says that if you miss a single day of class, you'll fail I find that false because I missed almost 2 weeks of class, and did great! As long as you take good notes, and go to office hours, he'll explain anything that you're confused about. He is a very good professor, but this class takes some work. Def not an easy A.
Professor Kimmel truly cares about the subjects he teaches as well as the success of his students. Class has 4 exams and a final, but when he says he only tests on lecture material he means it. Anything not said in class will not be asked. So, participation matters a lot. Study and pay attention - you will be fine. Super accessible outside class.
Prof. Kimmel was funny and passionate however, VERY TEST HEAVY. no extra credit and if you don't do good on one exam there goes your grade. have to attend lectures and there are like 4 or 5 exams that are very tedious and your only grades. I don't recommend but he's a nice guy.
This class is all lecture based and if you miss one you miss a lot of material. Overall Troy is nice but his lectures go all over the place and it's difficult to follow along with which makes it harder to do well on the exams when it's all lecture based. There's four exams on lecture materials and one geography exam.
Troy is a very charismatic person and clearly passionate about the material he's teaching. However, he has trouble keeping his lectures cohesive/on topic. Your grade mostly comes from the 4 exams, and class averages on those were consistently about a C. No lecture material is uploaded online for later access. Least favorite course this semester.
Troy Is a brilliant professor and it ended up being one of my favorite classes. You have to attend class to pass but he is always willing to help you understand. I am not a great test taker and I did pretty good, but you will have to put effort into the class to get an A.
Professor Kimmel is truly great. He is so passionate and excited to teach and that made the class even more interesting for me. The class does use Square Cap for attendance, which is worth 50/1000 points for the class. Tests are the rest of the points and you need to come to class in order to do well given that he only tests on lecture material.
This was my favorite class I took this semester, Troy is so passionate about what he teaches and very good at teaching it. You do have to attend lectures and study hard for tests, but the class is so interesting I didn't even mind.
Grades in Troy's class come from tests and attendance collected via Squarecap. Troy is an extremely caring professor and was very passionate about what he taught. He was extremely accessible outside of class through email and through office hours, which I highly recommend attending.
Professor Kimmel is honestly a pretty good professor. The tests are exclusively lecture-based pay attention in the lecture and just memorize all of the terms. The most difficult thing is the place name test where you have to memorize a big list of countries/places.. just study a bit and you'll be fine. If you're bad at memorization don't take it.
Troy is a good professor, he looks like he cares for his students which is great! but the way he conducts lectures and grading is just no. You cant take notes on your computer, only in a notebook. His slides are just the term, he explains the def (which he doesn't;t do very clearly). His grading is also based on 3 tests.
You must study for his exams. Although the content is simple and straightforward, it is not an "easy A", you will have to work for it with some study and memorization of terms/definitions. Even after attending every class, even after studying, I would consistently score 70-80 on the exams.
Relatively difficult if you're looking to just fill a requirement, but if you want to learn the content this is definitely your class. Troy is funny and entertaining and will always explain concepts again if you're having trouble understanding them. The importance of attendance can't be overstated.
Anything can be on the test that comes out of his mouth and usually trick questions using multiple terms on test. Study the geography/continents/features for the placement exam. It was about half geographic features and the other half country names. Also remember the clouds, exams have questions pertaining to specific features of them. Good luck
He does not use anything from the textbook and anything that comes out of his mouth could be on the test. He doesn't post the lectures or PowerPoint so if you miss a class you are kinda screwed. He goes on weird tangents and analogies that have nothing to do with the class.
Unless you have to take a class of his, find someone else. Now if you're science-smart, you might have a breeze. Troy is a great professor no doubt and cares for his students, but his lectures can be long and hard to sit through. Anything he says can be on the test, you will be writing from when you sit down until he dismisses you.
Professor Kimmel is a very respectable man. He is very well-versed in his field and you can tell he cares about what he teaches. The class is based on 4 tests and 1 final, and one of the tests gets dropped. You have to study fairly hard for the the tests because those are the only things in the grade book. Interesting class and he has office hours.
His lectures are horribly boring, complicated, and directionless. The course doesn't follow the syllabus: the course outline is not accurate. He doesn't post anything online. Also, he is unhelpful outside of lecture: he made a grown adult cry during office hours simply because they were confused. Worst professor I've had so far in any university
Troy Kimmel is by far one of the worst professors I've ever taken. The difficulty of this course is not worth the lower division core requirement needed for my degree plan. His lectures are uncohesive and often goes on into unrelated tangents. There are only 4 exams and 1 final with a consistent class average of around the 70s. DON'T TAKE THIS!
Anything he says will be on the test, even though his lectures are extremely disorganized and confusing. You cannot record/take photos of his slides. He provides a textbook that is essentially worthless to the course. His teaching method is not supportive of students, it only supports his ego. He doesn't listen to his students. dissappointing.
He describes his class as a "non-technology classroom", meaning that you have to take notes by hand. He does not properly show slides in class and never posts them online. Your grade will be based on 4 tests, a placement name exam, and participation. This class is not inclusive of people with different learning styles.
Troy was a great professor. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have enjoyed this class. It is a pretty difficult class...aka you will need to study a lot to make a good grade. He doesn't allow technology to be out during the class, so notes are handwritten. Anything he says could be on exams. If you are needing a "simple" class, this isn't for you.
Although some people really like Troy, I find his teaching style to inherently set up students to fail. He posts nothing on Canvas, lectures aren't recorded, your grade is entirely based on 4 exams, and he frequently trails off on tangents during lecture. The textbook really isn't helpful as all the questions are from his lecture, don't recommend.
Single handedly one of the worst experiences you will ever have if you have any bit of common sense. Everyone rating him good is clearly abundantly chronically online and has no life outside of academics. Sorry I don't have a week to study for this exam about weather. I have other classes, programs, and a life to enjoy. Aggie Ego is insane.
Love his personality and passion, absolutely hate how unforgiving the exams are. No matter how hard you pay attention/take notes, he tests on ridiculously minor details. You might struggle to succeed in this class unless it's your only responsibility.
While I liked Troy as an individual, I cannot say the same about his class. Notes cannot be taken electronically, the slides presented in class are not accessible, and much of your grade revolves around the exams. Almost anything said during lecture, no matter how minor, could be on the exam, so you had to write almost anything he said down. Beware
I enjoy Troy as a person, however as a Professor, hard pass. If you miss one day of class, you are basically screwed for the test. There are very few grades, and all he does is lecture. No slides, notes, or recorded lectures posted and the textbook that goes along with the class is useless. Attendance is mandatory and grade will drop if you miss.
This is a good class to take if you are keen on memorization. Professor Kimmel is passionate and accessible, but the class itself has a challenging structure. The grade is based on tests which consists of material that only comes out of his mouth in class. To succeed in this class, you'll need to basically write down everything he says.
troy is an amazing person but lacking as an educator. all exam material is based on whatever he says during lecture times, even small random comments could end up being on the exam! it is a no tech class which I found very difficult to keep up with his rambles and what to write down. I recommend making friends to share notes with cause its a lot
Nice man but, Troy's lectures are directionless and hard to keep up with, he often goes on tangents that aren't relevant to the class. NO TECHNOLOGY ALLOWED. He also does not post any content to Canvas. Tests often have questions on topics we barely discussed, if at all, and the cure is minimal. Do not take this course if you value your GPA.
I got to know Troy more personally because I was a notetaker for his class. He is a great guy who cares about all of his students. If you genuinely pay attention and take notes during lectures, you will only need a short review to pass the test. If you can take notes well and have a good memory you will be completely fine. Do not buy the textbook.
What a man. I took Weather and Climate (GRG 301K) for my science core. He doesn't allow computer notes, only hand written. Only lecture notes are on the tests, and that is all you are graded on but he tells you exactly what is going to be on the test. You can get an A--but you have to be ready to study! Tests cover a lot. I alr made quizlets for u
Professor Kimmel did an excellent job of explaining all the information that would be covered on tests. It was extremely important to take good notes and study a fair amount before tests. Grades are heavy tests based, but he does let you drop one test.
Professor Kimmel has a specific teaching style that can be challenging, but engaging with it pays off. Take detailed notes, use Unstuck study for study prep, and you'll succeed in this memorization-focused class.
Troy was a great person and extremely passionate about what he taught, the class was just super difficult. Absolutely no technology and only hand-written notes from lectures. Additionally, he would lecture and post nothing on canvas, so there were no resources outside of class and the textbook was useless. Great guy, super difficult class.
Troy Kimmel is very passionate about weather and climate which is very refreshing. But, his teaching style is very old fashioned and outdated, and everything on the exams is all word of mouth. It was also very hard to understand him at times so my notes were very random. Would never take him again.
A challenging but extremely rewarding course! Troy is an incredible teacher and kept me engaged the whole class time. He doesn't allow technology, so notes must be handwritten. This class takes effort and dedicated studying, but it is certainly doable. You don't need the textbook; everything comes from lectures.
Honestly, this is the only class at UT I have failed. Most of it was my own fault, but that doesn't mean this class is easy - it is VERY hard. You HAVE to pay attention, take good notes, and DO NOT miss a class. There will be no catching up. No technology is allowed in class. Not a fun time!
Troy was a great professor; it's just his tests are a little difficult. MIND YOU, I studied. Then we only had, like, 5 tests to be graded on. Yeah, my grade was not looking good. I had to drop the class before I failed. I'm not great in classes that only grade by test, oh, and attendance is a grade!
