Makes the course interesting and A good overall learning experience. Would take him again if I could. He is helpful and Makes sociology an event.
Great teacher and very helpful and understanding. I really learned a lot in this class. I believe that a teacher could 'make or break' a class, and he sure did 'make it'! He was so handsome too..
Good teach, learned alot never knew about!!!
Movies were innapropriate
I enjoyed the class and liked Troy's teaching stlye. He is very knowledgeable and shows concern for the students to expand their thinking. He helped me look at society a little differently than I had before. Classroom discussions were very interesting.
Awesome teacher
Troy McGinnis was very careful to teach clearly to my class exactly what we needed to learn. To this day, I consider my learning experience from this professor a gift as well a lesson. I use a lot of what I've learned in SOC 101 in my everyday life.
He's a really good teacher!!!
Unlike many college professors today, Troy McGinnis, actually made every attempt to force us, the students to parcipate in daily discussions, therefore forcing us to really learn and understand the material.
I will admit to being put off at first. I resented being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the Internet age (I am a dinosaur, you see). In the end I gained a solid understanding of the subject and a greater appreciation for diverse teaching methods.
Troy was an excellent teacher that had you learning plenty, questioning things you thought you already knew, and giving you a chance to challenge ideas that you may not agree with. Troy was awesome.
Very honest, love his teaching technique, up to date, very clear, not affraid to teach what is really outthere (doesnt hide reality)
I would recommend Troy to any student. He is real. He will teach what is real. His knowledge on the subject matter and other was extremely impressive. I looked forward to going to class - that alone impressed me! Thank you Troy!

this teacher will be one of your best. not only will he teach you the truth and what is real. Make sure you read for his class it will be easier to understand. Good Luck not like you need it:)

Mr. McGinnis had the potential to be a great teacher. However, I don't think he realized he was teaching a 101 class. He ALWAYS spoke in a manner understandable to maybe a graduating SOC class. Constantly using termanology before we had even learned it.
Ahoy, Troy! It's nice to know that someone enjoys my nonsensical writing style! Keep on baffling those simpletons with your evolved vocabulary. Err, umm, you're teaching is just fine. You're human like the rest of us, and thus, not perfect.
Troy is a great professor! He's not easy , but if I wanted easy I would go to LuLu's school for the lame. It's refreshing to find a professor that actually inspires you to learn and do your best. When I leave his class I am full of energy! Good job Troy!
The best Teacher at Community College, down to earth, funny Troy's the best.
Altho it didn't look like it...I really did learn a lot from you class. I view things with a different view point and it keeps me from being one dimentional. Thanx Leola
Troy opens your eyes to the social world, challenges you to think and inspires you through his teaching. I recommend his class to anyone who really wants to learn!
His level of commitment in teaching the Art of Sociology is beyond most persons ability to undertstand it.If only more professors were this dedicated.Thank you for sharing the tools in understanding the world, Troy, and creating the standard I wish to be
This was my first college course and you made it enjoyable and interesting. Thank you.
I will miss the fun nature of his class, and all 12 classmates that I got to know over the short semester.
HE IS GOOD AND CLEAR AND IF HE NEEDS TO HE WILL HELP THE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE TERMINOLOGY AND FUNCTIONS OF SOCIOLOGY.
Troy was an awesome teacher and made my sociology experience one i will never forget
non at this time
Troy's a wonderful teacher, I'd have gone more just if class wasn't on Sunday LOL
Excellent teacher, you can tell that he enjoys teaching college kids/adults! I thought Sociology was going to be a bore but he has made it very interesting and enjoyable! And I've actually have learned a lot! 2 thumbs up!
WAnts students to understant his lectures.. and makes sure students understand.. he should keep up the good work! :)

One of the best teachers i've ever had. He knows his stuff, is so willing to teach, and makes you understand the essentials.
Relly great techer. It was a short semester, and when it was over i was kinda sad. The class was so fun and interesting. He really got everyone involed and the students all helped one another almost right away.
I took this class because I needed a space filler. Just make sure to show up because his lecture is more important than the reading. He's a clear speaker and is actually pretty funny if you catch all his jokes. If you need Sociology 101 take McGinnis!
He is amazing! His class is so much fun! He is hands down one of the best techers i've ever had in my life!
Honestly, if you're just trying to get a class out of the way, his class is the one to do it. But if you're looking to get a real understanding on the sub. Don't do it. 15 essays, and he has not graded a single one. I could have all f's and not know. He's really funny, just not very committed. I don't think he really cares. Kinda lazy to me...
GREAT TEACHER! I enjoyed the class very much. He is very passionate about Sociology and all of it's aspects, and extremely educated. I recommend this class, but be prepared to actually use your brain. This is college.
never wanted to miss a class! will take soc again but totally with this teacher. he loves teaching and it come through in his lectures. very cool but challenging too
Love love love this class. Cant wait to take 102. Be prepared to write! This isnt an easy grade. Totally worth it!
This is a BEGINNERS COURSE and he speaks as if we've been doin this for years! Didn't like the course too much... but he is funny, very blunt, and eye-candy!
He is very helpful, all of the classes were very interesting, the text book was the first 1/2 of the class, the second 1/2 was a lecture with group participation encoraged
Brilliant professor! The work isn't terribly demanding, but definitely requires some effort. He knows his material, and could teach it in his sleep. I would recommend this professor to ANYONE. He makes Soc interesting!
1st week is a weeding out process. He will make you want to pee yourself & run for the hills. Those of you who stick around will be happy that you did. This man is brilliant. He knows what he is talking about so if you open your ears and pay attention you will learn some tools to look at the world differently. Oh...and he's hot.
If you really want to learn anything about Sociology I would suggest taking him for anything you can. Awesome professor, best one I had yet :) Thanks for an awesome semester that seemed to breeze by until presentations came, that seemed like forever lol. Take him he is awesome
love, love love! I think I found my major- he is so interesting and this class is one of those you never want to leave. He knows his stuff and better yet knows how to teach it. I'll be taking from him again!
McGinnis made soc 101 worth waking up before the sun for!
Absolutely wonderful professor! kept the class interested. Very funny too! My friend and I would count how many times he uses the word "ya" in his lecture. He says it a lot. He says it A LOT.. one time we counted 45 times
Great teacher.
He's a really good professor, very passionate about sociology. He's a very smart man, but very opinionated and not afraid to offend people. Good lectures, and the class is not difficult as long as you do the required readings and know the vocabulary.
Sociology of Marriage and Family: Complete lecture class, participation and discussion is expected. His exams are essay prompts, and it's possible you will have a final paper. Very laid back.
He was very hard or at first to weed people out. talk vocab. first weeks of class, and theory still lost. then he broke it down for me, in army terms you got to understand retired army after 24 years. the lite came on. he is awesome as a teacher.
Troy is such a great guy. He truly cares about his students and is totally game for conversation outside of class. There was a lot about this class that I felt was difficult, but he was there every step of the way to help. Take him. He is a very awesome professor!
Also called Soc240. Most stressful class of semester because I was never sure what to do or what was required. One scan. test and one written test, zero textbook usage, group survey project, fieldwork project, 3 drafts of a research proposal. All in all I'm glad I took him.
Troy McGinnis had the most mind provoking lectures that I had ever had the fortune of experiencing. He is the most lively and entertaining professor! If you are truly in a two year institution for the purpose of learning and allowing your mind to be introduced to new ideas then this is the class for you I felt enlightened to be above the idiocy
Professor McGinnis ROCKS!! He will push you to use your brain, and get you to see the world in a whole new way. He demands you put in effort but there's no super crazy work load. He's also super funny, I loved his class!
At first he was quite intimidating. By the end of the semester he eased up A LOT, though he still expects you to keep up with your work. Wonderful professor and highly articulate lecturer. I looked forward to the classes every week.
Awesome professor.. I personally hated the subject and everything a out it but he was interesting in his own way & definitely knew what he was talking about!
Great Professor. Keeps people engages in discussion and encourages debate. You will have to earn your grade, but he is fair.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He makes you think outside the box, and he'll make you rethink your own beliefs. Make sure you take his Soc 101 first.
This was the most ambiguous class that I have ever taken.Fellow students and I were consistently confused about the material. This is in part because of the nature of sociology, it is an extremely soft science, and everything is based upon assumptions and allegations. No scientific method is used in this discipline. He took months to grade our exams.
You will earn your grade in his class. He is funny and knowledgeable.
Great teacher but makes you work hard for your grade so if you want an easy class to slip by then don't take this teacher but if you want a fun and engaging class I recommend him!
Troy will not take pity on you, he leaves that up to other teachers who don't care as much. He expects you to get your work done and keep up with your reading. He will not repeat things for you so make sure you pay attention. He tells funny jokes but his knowledge and skill in this subject and as a teacher make him one of the best.
This professor is not an easy teacher he makes you work for your grade he's very outspoken, funny, and knowledgeable on this subject just as he should be. You have to keep up with the readings and you'll do good on the online quizzes pay attention to instructions and lectures you'll definitely learn new things and make sure to think outside the box
Troy is great! More than willing to help if you have any questions. Will give you a different perspective on how to approach subjects. He likes to provoke thoughts and conversations.
Interesting class. He is funny and knows what he is talking about. The only problem I had is that he doesn't grade anything until the very end of semester. I still do not know what grade I received on some assignments. But overall good teacher.
AWSOME PROFESSOR!SUPER SMART, VERY ENTERTAINING. FUN CLASS, WORT TAKE IT. Loved this class, despite that requires 2 books, lots of reading and writing. It was kind of trick at the beginning writing in a "News Style." But, McGuinness goes beyond his limits to make sure his students learn.Very prompt to questions. Don't be intimidate.
Chill prof, but thank God he got rid of most of the modules for our course or I wouldn't have been able to keep up with all the work. Very funny and gives interesting lectures, but it'll take you awhile to decide whether or not he's pretentious.
Hardest class of my life, but hard work paid off. He is obsessed with himself, but is mostly funny. Does "News stories" instead of normal papers and they are very weird and difficult. You usually need to dedicate a whole weekend to finishing one. Plus do not ask him questions you will regret it because he makes you feel stupid.
Prof McGinnis definitely knows what he is talking about! The semester I took him, he was trying to switch things up a bit so it was a little unorganized, but all in all I really learned a lot. He is always willing to help you out too. I recommend taking this class. Don't be offended by him, he tells it like it is.
McGinnis is very interactive with his classes and does his best to help you understand the theories and apply them. Make sure you do your read and leads as they are assigned because it is a pain if you do them last minute to get them turned in.
Great Professor , He is super helpful, intelligent, funny. As far as the work is not easy , gives a lot of reading assignments and you have to write about what you read. As far as grading ,I still don't know my grade hopefully I passed. He grades at the end of the semester .
I Love Professor Troy Mcginnis .
Awesome professor! as long as you do reading of the book, read and leads you are totally fine.
Soc 101 class is extremely difficult. He makes the class tough by assigning work to be done like a journalism class. He assigns a "newsletter" project. Like, this is sociology not journalism. Another bad thing there are only like 3 assignments for the entire semester and he doesn't grade until last minute. Still don't know what my grade is.
I tried to do the mid term but did not understand why it said turned in nothing that took me 170 minutes
McGinnis is a great prof. he really makes you think about how the world is and is very knowledgeable, but he makes this class very difficult because of the "newsletter" project he assigns his students. this is not JOURNALISM. if you love writing then go with this class. He doesn't grade until the last day of class. i never got the chance to improve
Teacher is very unclear he is confusing trust me on this you will not understand the class or pass it.
Troy is an awesome professor. He is very funny and really tries to get you into the discussions. Make sure you read though, otherwise you are going to be lost. If you have questions he's more than happy to clarify any confusion and always gets right back to me when I e-mail him. I would take his class again if I were going into Sociology!
Dr. McGinnis is cool. It's difficult to understand his lectures sometimes but some subjects are pretty straight forward. No test. The Newsletter Project is fun/easy. Do your articles ASAP, seriously. A lot of reading/writing. He's hot and funny so that's a plus! Gattaca is a great movie you watch in class. The class is interesting, I enjoyed it! :)
DON'T freak out about the leads as long as you keep up on it you will get a good grade. It's overwhelming at first but Troy is really there for you so just ask. He can be intimidating but he wants to push you to find the answers. Definitely a character, he gets side tracked but he's really funny and passionate about sociology.
McGinnis has an easy class if you actually do the work as you go. His newsletter project isn't difficult if you read and do your leads as you go. Go to the workshops (at least one) and the end of the semester is easy. He's more than willing to help & creates an interesting and inviting class. I highly recommend him for SOC 101.
In my experience he was off his game. He was going through a divorce, was often sick, I think he even just got through depression. Needless to say, he was just awful. We learned nothing in class, we'd just talk and have fun. He often was absent or came like 30 minutes late. Oh and the newsletter was just a pain in the ass. Awesome dude. Meh teacher
He was going through a divorce, amongst many other personal problems at the time and would often bring those problems to the classroom. He treated lecture like his personal therapy session more often than he taught the subject and as a result I learned more about him than sociology. I wouldn't take him again at least until he gets his life together
Troy is a good professor and you definitely can learn a lot from taking his course, he was off his game and is going through it right now though.
McGinnis had a great personality, but had no sense of professionalism. Never granted a syllabus to my class, and came in an hour late at least three times. You never know where you stand grade wise in the class.
His thing is to write newsletters. They are definitely hard to begin with, but if you keep going through and ask questions, you'll understand what he's asking of you. Also make sure you take good care of all of your homework files.
Boring. Talks about a lot of nonsense during class. Barely even had to show up to any of them to know what was going on. Constant news articles like I'm majoring in journalism. Read SO much.
McGinnis is okay. He doesn't do much, he just talks the whole time. So this class is very boring. And it feels like a journalism class. There aren't any tests and there were only three 5-point assignments, along with only one main writing assignment. Take his class if you want to be bored, but also have an easy A.
This class is really easy but boring. If you come and show up, you'll do fine. The assignments are easy but boring as well. Do the assignments and you'll pass. If your the type of person that wants to know a grade for an assignment, don't count on him. He doesn't grade till the end. Overall, really easy A.
The class seems tedious at the beginning but it's probably to weed out the bums. The class is easy. He does rather students to write in a newsy way, but it gets easier as the semester goes on. Be sure to check canvas before going to class because he cancels. He's an atheist, but talks a lot about religion/church. He's also anti-love and romance.
Very boring lectures, do not need to show up to pass, grades everything last minute but he is a good teacher if you want an easy A
I personally liked Professor McGinnis. The lectures were interesting to me and insightful. However some people in the class did not feel this way. Only two assignments for the class, a 7 page paper and a two response final online, each worth 100 points which sucked but if you were in class and payed attention shouldn't be that hard.
Interesting discussions. Got the subject down to a T. Beg to differ from other comments saying it was an easy A. If you want an A in this class, really have to pay attention.
Course was easy, but did not do much.
Learned a lot from taking this course. I was surprised that I actually liked the journalism project. It was insightful and definitely made me think critically about society. I loved taking his class and would highly recommend taking it. Reading will be required to pass this class so just a heads up!
This professor is a tough grader and doesn't give very good feedback.. also doesn't give clear assignment instructions. His lectures are verbal and hard to follow, he's hard to take notes from. Will see you outside of class to clarify but you'll probably leave more confused than you came.
this guy doesn't teach "sociology" he teaches how to write a freaking newspaper. Literally the worst prof I've had so far. Hated this class, did not learn anything. He is not consistent with grading and per him "He will never tell you what he wants from an assignment, you better figure it out on our own".
IF YOU ARE MATURE AND INTERESTED IN LEARNING- TAKE HIS CLASS. He is a nice and intellectual person. However, not an easy A. You will work for it
Professor McGinnis is not your typical Sociology professor, he has a very unique way of teaching. He is not there just to lecture you on what's in the book, he will make you think and question everything that you know about society. Take this class if you want to learn about Sociology. You will only get an A if you are able to apply the concepts.
Troy is awesome! There isn't a lot of work in this class until the end and then there is a 12-13 page sociology inspired newspaper you must create (he gives loads of help), mid term was fairly hard. You don't have to be there but if you miss the explanations of the subject matter needed to complete the final project you will fail.
An Amazing Professor. Makes you think. Easy A if you pay attention. Goes out of his way to make sure you understand what he's lecturing about. He absolutely appreciates people when they participate. Always available when you need help. Incredibly intelligent. We need more professors like him! Will definitely recommend taking his class....
He is a cool teacher and he is funny but he rambles on throughout the class and he's all over the place. The only 2 things he grades are the midterm and final. The midterm and final have little to do with sociology so if you want to actually learn about sociology this isn't the prof for you. I like him as a person, not as a prof.
Professor McGinnis is interesting. He is extremely smart and I think this is why his instructions aren't very clear. He thinks that you understand, when you don't. The lessons are good if you can keep up, however doesn't involve the book and you're only graded on 2 assignment, the midterm and final.
Troy could easily surpass any other sociology when concerning means of sociology. He has literally flipped sociology inside and out, learning from all angles of it. He is a really smart guy. However, he could work on his teaching a little bit, and getting on students level to help them understand. I think that is his main struggle.
Great prof and person. Not too great on the assignments- midterm was easy, the manifesto you have to do is hard. Pretty much only gives you newsletters to write. "Do it as creatively as you want but do it wrong and you fail" sort of guy. But his lectures are great, very kind, super f'n smart.
Passionate Professor. His class is very unconventional, but you have to be open minded and patient with his teaching style. His lectures are student driven, so you have to actually participate in order to gain the knowledge that you want to gain. There is only one assignment due at the end of the semester, and all assignments are weighed as EC.
Sociology with McGinnis: I think the topic itself as a class would be almost life changing because its so interesting and rarely taught, but its only effective if it was taught correctly, appropriately, and in an organized manner. This is not a class if you are fresh from high school because you won't get the point.
Troy is a great professor because he genuinely cares about what hes teaching and the well being of his students.
Lectures felt more like confusing conversations than lectures. But this class was probably the easiest one I've ever taken. Troy really loves sociology and he cares for his students, he even hosts workshops for the one assignment he gives and tells you about it at the start so you have the whole semester to work on it.
He's honest when he critiques your work, but it was an easy class. His lectures helped more than the textbook, and the final, midterm, and project were easy. You just have to follow his simple, up front rules and you will be set! I would suggest showing up as often as possible, but you can surely get a good grade as long as you keep up at home.
I hated taking this class. He is a nice person but not a very good teacher. Not clear about what is required. Talks about his own life mainly. The only two grades are the midterm and final. These were extremely difficult because there was not a rubric or criteria or clear directions. I worked on my final for almost 6 hours and it was never graded .
He does not care. He's been very, a no-show and since quarantine he has not communicated with the class. Students have been very lost on what is going on. As for textbooks, unless you plan on enriching yourself with it, don't buy it cause it wasn't used. 2-days till the semester is over and not a SINGLE grade has been inputted.
Gave 12 assignments where we had to write a news story on a sociological document. Each of these news stories were optional but are necessary to have written for the final. Lectures were confusing and had no direction. He barely showed up to class. Didn't learn a thing about sociology, but it was an easy A.
I literally did not know what had been going on the whole semester. He neither posted a syllabus nor graded assignments. His lectures and the assignments had no specific direction and Id been lost what exactly to do all the time. He posted total 12 new stories to write and each has like 25 pages article to read.
Avoid this class at all costs. He vanished once classes went online. Students called, texted, and emailed but he didn't say anything until the day the project was due, then disappeared again. 12 long assignments with no lecture, no feedback, no nothing. No grades posted until the semester is over. I have never been so frustrated about a class.
He never graded anything on time. I didn't get my first grade in the class until the last week of the semester. He also never answered calls or texts leaving students to figure it out themselves. I only passed because of prior knowledge of writing in a news format because he doesn't like academic papers. Go to a different teacher.
My fiance and I took this class about 2 years ago and we still talk about what we learned there today. Troy might be the most philosophical professor I've met. As someone who's intellectual, he appeals to my nature. If you're not a thinker, this class may not be for you. Troy is the House M.D of CSN and excellent if you'd actually like to learn.
Always late or noshow. Very difficult to understand, he mumbles quietly and quickly. I felt like the class was only being taught to the front row. His lectures were NON EXISTENT. Just him talking up front writing sloppily on the whiteboard a word or name. No homework or assignments made sense. All students in my class agreed - most of us withdrew.
This teacher needs to get his act together. You would think during a pandemic he would try to make things easier for his students. Nope. He has not graded ANYTHING, he doesnt respond to emails, and his lectures make no sense. No syllabus available and most assignments still have no instructions or due date. I do not recommend!
Troy has not graded anything since the first day of the semester. He's very lecture heavy but is impossible to reach outside of class.
Although he did not grade things on time I did quite find his class easy. I read the book at times with a few weekly questions or news story. His online lectures arent mandatory and assignments may have due date but hes lenient on late turn ins. never quizzes just midterm and final exam where they are essay questions or news stories also hes cool
I hope you take this review into consideration. Never graded anything until the last week, heavy lecture, and brought politics into class, its more about being indoctrinated than being educated but what do you expect from a sociology professor. If this class is require I recommend a different prof. other than that work was simple but not graded.
Do not take this class! He didn't grade anything until the last minute, impossible to reach out outside of class, and at the end of our semester he gave most people a C for no reason. His lectures make no sense and you never know what to expect from him. Do not expect to learn anything from his class. Get a different professor!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Ive never had a worse professor than him. He didnt grade a single assignment until the very last week of the semester. Only cares about midterm/final & tough grader. New storys (basically essays) every week. I ended with a low A but had no clue where I stood with my grade. During lectures he always got side tracked.
Dont waste your time with this professor if you really wanna learn something. EXTREMELY unprofessional and immature. Hardly anyone liked him or showed up to his online lectures. Boring & mainly talks about himself and not the material itself. Easy class but way too much work, especially considering the fact that he doesnt actually grade it.
Upsetting that there is absolutely zero structure to the class and most of his direction is unclear. Never a direct answer of expectations and "just get it done whenever". I'd like to learn something and not have an off topic conversation the entire "lecture". #missedthepoint :(
Professor McGinnis was AWESOME. He allows the students to guide the conversations while still teaching. If there were things I wanted to talk about (regarding soc of course) he let me have the floor and opened the discussion up to everyone. There is quite a bit of reading and writing but it's interesting material so it felt like nothing at all.
I don't know why people give him a bad rating. He was great! You literally have to try and fail his class. Just show up, participate and do your homework and you will pass. He is fair and the work load is very reasonable. The people who gave him a bad rating must have not done their work or procrastinated.
Didn't like this class. No structure at all. You can pass by just reading the textbook, then doing the discussion posts and quizzes, and not attend a single lecture. Was late almost every day by 5-10 min. Lectures are sometimes student-lead discussions, but they went all over the place. Intriguing convos, but unnecessary sometimes. Don't take him.
I have reached out to him many times and still no reply. Instructions for homework are unclear and he hasn't graded any of the papers we have had to do that are worth 100pts. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if the instructions were clear but when you're unsure about what you're supposed to do or in what format, some feedback would be nice. 0/10
I think professor McGinnis would be an excellent teacher to have for an in-person class. However, his online class is lacking. Nothing gets graded until end of semester so you have no idea what your grade is. Assigns a lot of news stories for 100 pts but doesn't provide rubric or feedback. It feels like you're on your own with little guidance.
Assignments make no sense.
This class is rough. Syllabus is non-existent, grading criteria is sparse at best, and the 8 papers that define your grade won't be graded until the last week of class. For someone whose been teaching since 1998, it doesn't show. There are chapter quizzes almost every week, which some of the questions will not be in the textbook. Not worth it.
McGinnis was a tardy teacher. He was usually absent for class or late, but as the year progressed, he started arriving on time. He grades VERY late, but his work is easy and simple to understand. His lectures are long and interesting, but he's quite difficult to understand as he mumbles and slurs his words. Overall, he's a decent professor.
I took his course online. He provides the textbook needed. We have tea world conversations around what we're studying. The midterm and final exam were a few essays on a movie. He did give us a week and a alf so just prepare your schedule to have to squeeze in a few essays around mid term and final time. Besides that, he's fair and funny.
Troy was a very funny professor, he definitely likes to talk and will talk for the entire class period, however he connects terms and ideas from the class and applies it to real world problems which helps make the material more understandable and applicable. He takes a long time to grade, especially with midterms and finals.
Mr. McGinnis Is A Great Teacher. You Can Tell He Is Passionate About His Curriculum. It Is Hard To Fail This Class, He Just Wants To Make Sure You Are Participating And The Homework Is Minimal.
As others say, he is a tardy instructor. He missed quite a few classes and sometimes would not give you a heads up. Work is pretty easy for the most part, his lectures can be long and confusing as he yaps but can be funny and has humor. Does not really track attendance just show up as much as you can. Overall easy A honestly. Takes long to grade.
This professor is notorious for his lack of organization. He frequently digresses into personal anecdotes during class, straying far from the subject matter. His lectures lack structure, making it hard for students to keep up. Moreover, he graded the entire class based on a single paper, contrary to the outlined course requirements.
If you like your time being wasted, then by all means, take this class. He did not show up multiple times without sending an email and missed quite a few days of classes. Lectures had 0 structure and talked about his divorces a ton. Said he wasn't going to assign a 16-page final paper, but ended up doing that. Still hasn't posted grades.
If I had known he wouldn't be in class more than half the time, I would have changed professors. He always has excuses for attending class, whether it be his car breaking down for the 3rd time that month, or him "not feeling well". He talks A LOT, but not on the subject of the class just like about his personal life and divorce and mother passing.
Professor McGinnis is a quirky but engaging lecturer. His classes can be disorganized at times, but his passion for the material shines through. Preparing with Unstuckstudy and the textbook helps navigate the class. Overall, a decent option if you don't mind the occasional tardiness.
Frequent tardiness or absence without notification, Will not respond to text or email, and generally no structure to anything in the course. Seriously he is only interested in hearing himself talk about his life as a single parent. Avoid at all cost.
He is a slow grader and doesn't show up half the time.
Late on grading everything, some things he never did grade. Never responds to emails or texts when you need help. Never made any sense, had to figure stuff out on my own since he never helped.
Easy class surprisingly. Lectures had literally nothing to do with assignments. Class is basically self taught. Quizzes are easy. 5 journal essays in total. Very lenient with grading. Note that he doesn't grade any of your journals until finals week so you will have no idea how well you do throughout the semester.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! the lectures made no sense and he even said when talking about the final "I don't have to make this clear". Half of the assignments made no sense and the lectures weren't related to the work half the time. Wasn't very reliable when you needed help. Regret taking this class or just having this professor in general!!
Won't show up to class often. If he does, he's late. The lectures have nothing to do with the coursework. Lots of writing, heavy source material you MUST use, but you can't write in a normal format. You have to write "like a journalist" which he never explained either. No feedback, no grades, impossible to reach. I changed my SOC major thx to him.
Do not take his class. Always absent. Difficult to understand.
Shows up to class 7/10 times, if doesnt show up its either a late reminder or no reminder at all. many students have either dropped from his class or just stopped attending throughout the semester, lecture heavy and hard to understand. Says to write like a Journalist but hard to make sense of from his teachings.
He was very accessible outside of class and very willing to help any student that needed it.
I don't think you need to write like a journalist to understand sociology…
