is very unclear and doesn't answer your questions!!!!!
she's reallty nice and always tries to help you. she'll take late papers and if you come late to class and miss a quiz (lab OR lecture) she'll let you take it at the end of the class which is better cause you can get answers from everyone else.
Very confusing. Tries real hard to teach it to you, but doesn't explain very well at all. Very nice though. Never explains things well.
Not that easy of a class for me and she makes it that much harder. She speed teaches and I really wonder if she even knows what shes talking about sometimes!
she did a horrible job at teaching the information she isn't clear at all and when you asked for her to explain something you didn't understand she would reword it but basically repeat what was in the notes so you still didn't understand the information. Also doesn't clarify what will be on the exam
SHE IS SO EASY AND SO HAWT
You must read the book to pass the class, vocab quizzes every week, you must be able to teach yourself to do well in this class.
SHE IS REALLY NICE AND SHE ALWAYS MAKES TIME, IF YOU NEED EXTRA HELP. HER GRADING IS VERY FAIR.
She is by far the worst teacher i've ever had!!! Very boring to listen to and not easy to watch. She has a very sweet personality, but sucks as a teacher. I love health science, but she makes me dread it every week!!!
omfg.....she is the worst teacher i have ever had. freshmen, if u gonna take this course don't pick her to teach it to u, cause it is a waste of time. she starts out really loud and then she gets really quiet and the last words u can barely hear, and she talks in a really weird way. when she teaches u, she is skipping all over the f****** book!!!
everyone leaves early in lab, but i stayed 1 hour after they left, studied and reviewed for hours even after class, but there is no use, u can't pass her class, period! very unfair and unclear.fill in blank quizzes every week, and i studied like crazy!! but on the quiz, none of the defintions matched the ones i studied, all of them were different!
PROFESSOR GILLEVET IS A GREAT TEACHER. SHE IS VERY HELPFUL AND YOU LEARN A LOT. PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW HARD SHE IS PROBABLY DIDN'T COME TO CLASS AND MAKE AN EFFORT.
She lacks the ability to familiarize the student with the material. Instead she just stands up there and talks about the topic rather then actually explaining it. Very nice lady but a horrible teacher.Take this class if u learn better from reading. Dont take this class if u need to be taught the subject in order to understand it.
I took NAS 161 with her and it was tough, but she did her best to help the students. NAS 162 is hard in general because of the amount of material, but she gives lots of extra credit to help u pass, she dosen't want you to fail, she will help u if u need it, its just that her teaching style is differnt and very hard to follow along.
I took both NAS 161 and 162 with her. Her classes are very tough. She goes over the material in class but you do not really learn a whole lot in class. To do well in her class you must spend hours reading the textbooks. One positive is she does give a TON of extra credit.
This was only the SECOND class I've had to drop at NOVA the other being a Drasner class. Are all BIO teachers at NOVA horrible?? I DID try in this class. Has 2 quizzes a week, one in lecture and one in lab. If only she could teach and her word bank didn't include 30 words for a 10 question quiz. Good luck to you if you take her, you'll need it!
I went to class everyday but you have to teach your self the material. She expects you to remember things from high school so she does not review that material. She speaks way to fast in class you can't even write notes. She is not a good teacher. Her questions are also worded very weird.
I took this class last semester, be prepared to read the whole book on your own! You can study all you want for her quizzes and test, but nothing that you study will be on the test. Sometimes she will pause in the middle of a sentence and then totally forget what she was talking about. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TAKING THIS CLASS WITH HER!
Attention students. NEVER take her class. She does not know how to teach at all. Makes wierd faces all the times. Her tests are HARD and Useless. Better read the text than coming to her class. U will really suffer in her class. Please never ever take her class. She will always give you REALLY hard time. Also, her labs are even worst.Worst one
OMG she is the worst proff out there some times i thing science teacher are mentally challenged because of the amount of work they put in thier brains and they act wird and she is one of them. He is nice with grading but will not understand what she is teaching. Rather not show up to class and stay home and study your self because she is boring and
very good teacher!!! answers all questions .. don't expect to get an A if you don't read or show interest.. labs are looonnngg!!! i had to study a lot for this class to get an A.. overall she was very very nice
I took NAS 161-162 with her couple semesters ago. I think she's a good prof. Don't get me wrong, I didnt get an A.. I took her both semesters cause I actually learned something! If you want an easy A, don't take her.. if you want to learn, then please do. very helpful, very thorough...
Very nice, but sometimes goes on tangents that confuse the student. Very helpful though and willing to help out.
Dont even think about takin her.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! SHE IS AN AWFUL TEACHER. CANT UNDERSTAND HER CLASS AND SHE IS REALLY BORING!!!
Wonderful person! one of the best teachers that I have ever had! She is knowledgeable and helpful and takes pride in her work. Her only goal seems to be to forward her students in there ambitions.
NAS 161/162 is an intense class to take regardless, but Prof. Gillevet will do whatever she can to help you out, as long as you are willing to learn. Offers extra credit on exams and posts her class notes on website. she very helpful; wish she taught 162 next semester.
She doesn't come off as the nicest teacher but I think thats because she has to b/c of all the slackers in class. Always allowed for late work and sometimes hard to understand. If you want a high school teacher and not a professor don't take this class. I never read the book and listened to just the lecture and power point and passed with an A+ )
After all that hard work that I put into her class, she did not appreciated it and still gave me a D. She doesn't explain Class well, and she is always misleading. She gave us a Final with 75 question accumulative from about 15 chapters plus 75 questions from 8 new chapters. She made us go to the zoo, I was running around the zoo for about 4 hours a
hard tests after you study for hours and still get at D. zoo scavenger hunt, good use of power point, and posed them on her website. hard class good person but bad teacher.
Im taking this class right now. Im studying every damn day for about three hours its still no use. All the short answer quizzes that she puts, none of them match the book. for example i know what the aorta is but her definition of it sucks. I should've come to this website before i took her class. :S:S
She is the WORST teacher i have seen in this entire world. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!you will not understnd anything from her. Test are really hard and her test questions areextremely hard. SHe will make all those weired faces that will draw ur attention and u will not understand anything. DONT TAKE HER CLASS PLEASE>IF u wanna suffer then go head..
Nice person... AWFUL TEACHER...I will never recommend her...
Only take her class if you are really seriously interested in bio or a science major. There is so much material covered with 2 quizzes a week and very hard tests without study guides. Can't miss a day of class without pentalty. You must have plenty of time to dedicate to this class ONLY if you're not a bio genius and want a decent grade.
Gillevet sucks so bad. She was the worst professor I have ever had to deal with! Can not stand her. Had to drop her class, wasn't learning anyhting, and she goes way too fast and isn't willing to stop and help you at all. Compared to other NOVA professors she is byfar the worst.
Will be taking 2nd demanding class from this prof spring 09. Her class materials are excellent and are designed to help any style learner do their best. will do anything she can to help a hardworking student learn. Always available. must read or watch text online to understand lectures. Frequent quizzes promote learning.Tests easy if u study.
Dont take her class i had to drop it shes not willing to help. I never write on this website but she is so bad i just had to.
BE THERE EVERY DAY ON TIME!! Gives all quizes in first 15 min, if you're late you get a 0. Don't bother listening to the lectures, just read the book while shes talking and make sure to quiz yourself on the vocab. Study the ppts for the tests. Her tests questions are often very badly worded, but don't be afraid to ask for clarification.
shes not a good teacher, really boring, cant understand her sometimes. at least 2 quizzes a week(vocab & lab). the quizzes are right at the start of class, so if ure late like 5 min, ure screwed.
Disregard the ratings bashing her- the class requires effort but isnt hard if you try! She is approachable, honestly enthusiastic about the subject matter, and doesnt needlessly overemphasize theory. Tons of extra credit opps to help bolter your grade plus study guides & chapter objectives. The people who dislike her dont try and still expect an A
not an easy class BUT she HELPS you to succeed! don't slack, do your work, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXTRA CREDIT, come to class...(you know, seriously basic things that any student should do) and you will have NO problem passing this class...might even get an A:)
In all honesty I feel like I really didn't have to put all that much effort into this class. Coming to every class on time, reading the powerpoints, and doing all the assignments are all you need to succeed. Her test aren't that difficult if you actually study and there are PLENTY of opportunities to score extra credit. She's great! :)
i signed up for her class late and she said it wouldnt be a problem, so i sign up for her class and i show up and she tells me that i wont be able to make up the assignments that i missed the classes before i added it so i had to start the class at a 90! i dropped it and have a w/d on my transcript bc of her on top of that shes rude to students!
well its not that she is a bad teacher its just that to much info at a time you can barely stand the class
She talks VERY fast in lecture...but she's very nice. Just read the book, use the ample material, and you'll do fine!
She is very nice. The thing is that at some point she gives TOO MUCH INFO. and is quite hard to keep up. Do the blackboard assignments!!!!
Take her if you: want to be challenged, have a strong background and interest in Biology and Science, have lots of free time, and if you are not a procrastinator. Otherwise you will have a difficult time in her class.
I love Trudy. Best teacher EVER!. 2 exams + final. Very lenient with grading exams & HW.Exams r a little hard. Just use study guides & read book! gives lots of EXTRA CREDITS even on exams. Do all assignments u'll get an A. IF u dont want to buy textbook get a masteringbiology account online for $30 n get access to book online, tests videos n more!
I AGREE with the comments before myself,I took both of her classes BIO 101 AND 102.It was the same in both she goes fast during lectures and sometimes she rush through the material. She wants to cover everything on the syllabus. If you want to challenge yourself be my guess and take her class. She gives plenty of extra credit,READ the chapters n do HW
She was a very informative professor to say the least. I liked her and she gave many opportunities to improve your grade! I loved her as an overall professor for Bio 101
She's ridiculous. You cant follow her lessons, she gets so off track. I went every day and took notes and managed to almost fail every test. The book helps, but she asks the same question 5 different ways TRYING to mess you up on the test. It was just ridiculous. SAVE YOURSELF
She means well, but in no way is a teacher you want. I feel as if my grade in no way shape or form reflects how much extra work I had to put into this class. She grades on a completely different scale than a Bio 101 level. I can't tell you how many of my classmates and I regretted the decision to take this class.
Cell Biology is a very hard class, but she dedicated herself to help all students. She replies to emails promptly. Her tests are hard, thus you need to study the material at least twice. All in all, I had fun and learned a lot.
She is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. Really surprised by everyone's comments of her because she was my favorite teacher. Go to class and print out the lecture powerpoints on blackboard...you do that, you are golden!
B Student. The class I was in were filled with disrespectful bunch of students. Come in late. Come to exam with no scantron. Cheats on homeworks. Cheats in Lab by Photocopying lab report. Yet they have the nerves to berate this Professor. Even though she and I had our difficulties...she is still a great teacher.
If your best subject is not Bio I suggest you take another professor. She is very peppy early in the morning, goes really fast through the slides, and she is a decent grader. If you skip a class or two you will be completely behind, she also gives hw every week. There are about 5 exams in total and a field trip.
I took this class for a second time. She truly genuinely cared about helping those students who were dedicated to learning and passing. She took time out to reteach the material during her office hours without a complaint. Attendance is must and Tests can be hard. Just work hard and respect her rules and her methods.
Trudy is my gal and came in clutch with the grading at the end of the semester. Zoo trip geeked my life
She is an okay professor, shes not an easy A. You have to study a lot and really understand the material. if you have a good understanding of the martial the test aren't so hard.
Her test aren't that hard. If you put some effort into her class you'll pass. She really does care for her students and means well. Long lectures but class was fun espically lab since it was interactive. Fair grader & fun and easy zoo trip as final lab exam
This class has tons of little assignments. only 70% of your class grade is even based on tests. the rest is 15% class assignments ( a million little ones that are very disorganized), 15% research paper, 25% lab. She berates students for being late or missing class. She runs this like a high school class, if you get what i'm saying.
For someone like me who is horrible at Biology, she is amazing and the best teacher. I wish she could teach every class I have to take for biology courses. Don't skip class, you'll fall behind. Labs are fun! She's great at explaining things, all you gotta do is ask (and she won't huff and puff about having to stop to explain like some teachers do)
She rushes through power points and her exams are hard. She is a nice person, but I sometimes have no idea what she is talking about in her lectures. You will need to study a lot for her exams, mainly look over the power points at home. Her labs are fairly easy and usually short.
Lectures are long and confusing because she sometime mumbles things as if only the people in the front row should hear the information. She shows favoritism and is rude. Her class however isn't extremely hard. You just have to really apply yourself. All her lectures are on blackboard for studying purposes.
Good teacher if you like lectures, lectures are long, and they drag on. Notes are not very specific, she ends up talking and what she talks about ends up being way more important than the notes on the slide. She can be very harsh, even when you ask a simple question. Not worth your time, and money at all.
No homework. Tests are hard, 50% multiple choices and 50% short answers. 4 pages of research paper. 2 presentations. Be aware!!! If you are good at Biology then go ahead, but if you are not, think again and harder before register her class.
DON'T EVER TAKE HER! The professor did not demonstrate clear and sufficient lecturing as well as guidelines for the lab, lab reports and assignments. She poorly answer to students' questions. Most of the times, Mrs. Gillevet interrupted when the student was asking, to me that's super rude and should not be a characteristic of a good professor.
She always seems to have technical difficulty with computer at the beginning of the class. Her syllabus fills with tons of assignments which is not very logical at all. She once made a mid-term exam the length of a final. If biology is your strength and you are able to study independently, the course is not too bad. Otherwise, it'd be very annoying
This class is good if you have a strong background in Bio and a little bit of Chem. You have to do A LOT of studying outside of class if this is one of your weaker subjects since the notes in class are limited and she talks very fast. She is very passionate about what she teaches and is always willing to help students outside of class.
Though Professor Gillevet gave difficult tests, her approach on teaching was very useful. My Bio 101 teacher was far easier, but I didn't learn nearly as much. If you want to actually learn material and work for your grade rather than cruising along, this teacher is a really good choice. If you're just looking for an easy A, take someone else.
I pretty much loved her & will miss her. She wants u to do well. Expect labs & to consistently work for a good grade. There's 1 class trip & a PowerPoint presentation on World Biomes per student. Expect to study for days on end before exams, but trust me they're not that hard. Exams r curved & broken into multiple choice & short answer-Very doable.
Is she hard? Yes. But if you show up to class everyday it will not be hard to pass. I hate biology and I still did well. You also get a huge chunk of credit for attending everyday, 3 points a class. Homework is graded for completion but get it in on time. She posts all the lectures online and outlines! Use them and you WILL pass!
Goes off topic when giving her lectures, but her tests are very easy and straightforward. She provides many ways to help study for her exams which always helps.
she does tend to go off track and rushes with her lectures. Powerpoints aren't fully detailed and aren't in order that would help you understand the material. assigns hweekly hw and gives a bunch of extra credit but have a maximum of completing 2. 1 field trip, 4 exams and one quiz. no rescheduling for any exam no matter what good excuse you have.
Honestly the worst bio professor at nova. Her lectures are very heavy and she gets off track... Her powerpoints are in an order that causes the material to not make any sense. Whatever she tests you on is not based on notes its based on what she says in class. Hw daily and labs take more than 1 or 2 hours. no midterm, 4 exams including the final
If you put in the effort she'll work tirelessly to get you the grade you deserve. Great professor.
She is the most caring professor ever. She does want everyone to do great in her class. If you study the hw keys and quiz yourself using the objectives, youll be more than ready for the tests. Her tests are easy and straightforward. Majority of the questions are from the hw. I passed HS bio with a C, but I got an A+ in her class. She is amazing!
She is nice, but her lectures are pretty long. However, it's a lot of information we have to learn anyway. She has HW due once a week. PreLab HW is also mandatory but it's only 5-7 questions long and the answers are in the lab book. Don't really need a textbook bc the slides have the info you need for tests. Has test objectives to help you study!
Yes, shes a hard professor and you have to put work in to get a good grade but I learned so much from her class. Dont skip. If you have to miss, talk to her ahead of time. The final in lab was going to the zoo and doing an assignment. The tests mostly come from the powerpoints and in class but get the book. You also NEED the lab book.
Very easy class to pass. Weekly homework and prelab, and lab. Homework is graded for submission, so just submit and get the grade. Prelab and lab are graded for accuracy. Attendance is graded. Participation not graded. SO MUCH extra credit on exams, in homework, in prelabs. Just do what she asks and you're good.
Do every homework. Nice lady but she doesn't seem to care whether you succeed or not. Miss a lecture and you WILL be lost
If you miss one class, you wont understand the homework. If you dont do the homework, you wont get a good grade. Tests are also a big chunk of the grade; usually 50 questions or a bit more. She assigns a lot of homework, too. She even assigned a homework assignment due the last day of break. Grades can also be harsh, even if you try,
The reason why I'm writing this is because her low scores does not give her justice. She's a really nice and GOOD biology professor. Lots of homework, heavy tests, and class activity. She's very organized and updated with canvas, so do everything you have to do and you will pass the class while also learn, which is why we go to school.
worst teacher i've literally ever had, science specifically biology is already a struggle for me and she managed to complicate it even more! called me stupid one time during lab and made me cry in front of the entire class. don't take this class if you don't know how to teach yourself material because she wont be teaching you anything :)
She seems like a nice person and all but isnt that great of a teacher. She tends to get off track in her lectures and doesnt have clear directions when it comes to homework, lab, and grading. Communicates back quickly, but isnt clear in her responses and doesnt know how to use technology either. Honestly you are better off taking someone else.
Honestly not great, youre better off taking someone else. She isnt clear in her explanations when it comes to labs, homework, and her responses in emails. She also doesnt know how to use technology either, which she should given the time she had to teach during NOVAs shortened term because of the pandemic. She also vacuumed during a class. Yeah
Having this instructor was the most frustrating educational experience I have ever had in academia (I say this as a 2nd year Doctor of Physical Therapy student.) She is belittling, constantly flustered and all over the place, would rarely answer questions directly, and was never clear w/ her instructions for lab. DONT take her if you don't have to.
If you're on the edge about Professor Gillevet... take her! I always attended class at the meeting time, but if you can't she is fine if you watch the recording. Labs are straightforward and homework is completion-based. You definitely need to study for the tests but she is very understanding and loves explaining anything you might need help with.
She is a very nice person and a horrible teacher. Her exams are impossible. The study materials for exams is unclear. Homework due every week on Friday at 1 pm. Homeworks are fairly easy, exams are insane and are very important for your grade. Her lectures and boring and honestly did not help me in the slightest. DONT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN.
Professor just reads off the PowerPoints, which are very broad. She also teaches supper fast. If you are not paying attention or attend class the powerpoints will not make any sense unless you read the textbook. The exams are super hard and there is no "real" study guide, just the objective learning sheets. Do the work and STUDY and you will pass.
This is probably the most passive aggressive teacher you will ever have. Instead of giving you an answer to a question about the notes or homework, she will ask and blame you for not trying to find the information yourself. You can very well pass by just doing the homework and weekly quizzes, but if you get annoyed easily, don't take this course.
I took BIO 101 as a 15-week independent online class with in-person labs weekly. She is highly passive-aggressive and will openly suggest that it is your fault for doing something wrong. Also, the tests are very hard and she provides little study material. Labs are confusing due to little instruction and everyone is lost.
not sure if it's just me but the lab grading scale is unclear. SHE IS A KNOWLEDGEABLE TEACHER. but yes she is PASSIVE AGRESSIVE :) I have 3-hour lectures and it's real boring. her quiz is NOT EZ but she does add some bonus points which helps a lot. however, there is always lab exercise and lecture participation so obv cannot miss a class
Once you get use to her, she isn't half bad. She offers plenty of extra credit. She does weekly quizzes instead of big test. Make sure to turn things in on time - she doesn't accept late work. PS If you need accommodations for ADHD or Depression, she respects these as long as you fill out the accommodations and get them approved by the school.
The Professor is passive-aggressive AF but the class is fairly easy. The textbook isn't mandatory but I suggest getting one. she recommends the new book but I got the old one and did just fine. The answers for the homework can just be googled but reading the textbook can be helpful. She does weekly quizes instead of test. TURN THINGS IN ON TIME.
The course is structured by lab activities and small quizzes in the first 15mins of lectures as well as one at-home worksheet per week. Attendance is mandatory, but work is manageable. There are no tests, just weekly quizzes.
Online course w/3-hour lab each week. Professor was rude, condescending, patronizing, passive aggressive and a bad teacher. Would shame/guilt trip students in front of class who asked legit questions, showed up late, or turned in assignments late (confidential info). Tests were hard & unreasonable for a 101 course. Take any BIO 101 class but hers.
At the end of the semester I met with her to discuss my grades. She told me that if I got every point left I would get a D, and she did math to prove it. I was sad but accepted it. Then my friend in the same class proved I already had enough points to get a C. My final grade was B. What?! She doesn't understand her class, its points, or its grades.
less than bare minimum
The professor is great. She makes the class feel like it's high school again but with more strict deadlines. you can easily pass this class easily if you do the work on time. all the other reviews say she is the worst that's because they don't pay attention in lab or lecture or both. Take this class if you want to relive the old high school days.
I took a six-week class with professor G and I'm glad I took it with her. Although I suck at science, I think the only reason I got a B was because of her generosity. She gives you the outline for the quizzes and many of the quiz questions are homework questions so you know what to study. If you fail it's because you didn't put in any effort.
