Horrible teacher, I haven't dropped a class in my college career and have a 4.0, but would have failed this class if i didn't drop it because this man is such a poor professor! DO NOT take this man's class
Worst Professor Ever! He is so unclear, and super strict. Way Anal! DO NOT take his class!
WORST PROF EVER!! I would have failed his class had I not dropped. Unless you want to fail, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Hard Professor, but very knowledgeable, and gives you what you need to know for test, ect. Test are very hard!! I would take him for a challening class!!
His class is definitly college level. If you're looking for a cakewalk, he's not the teacher. If you're looking for a class that challenges you to learn, this is it. His tests are VERY hard, and he relies on essays.
Professor Reid is very difficult, but I thought that he kept his expectations clear. You MUST understand the material to do his tests. I barely passed this class, and I am an "A" student, but I liked the challenge. Lots of essays & attendance is
I agree with all the postings. Horrible professor; clearly marks the "me teacher, you student" line. He lectures, and lectures, and lectures, and on, and on.....You feel like in an Army bootcamp (he's an AirForce retiree), do not take him!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
people need to stop complaining about Reid just because he has high expectations. I feel that i have learned more in his class than any other, even if i dont end up with a good grade, i have no regrets
Very smart man but Extremely strict. Either you learn the information or you WILL FAIL. For those who like a ReaL College class take his class. but most people would rather take something that's easy! if so, avoid him.
Don't take him unless you have nothing else to do but stay home and study. At the begining of the semester there was no romm to sit in his class but towards the end only 5 was student left, that should tell you something. Very anal and way too strict.
Very good teacher. Knows history and tells you what you need to know. Do not take it if you don't care about learning or if you can't think. And he was not in the Air Force.
Knows his history TOO good. You cannot BS anything over him on essay question quizes. For quizes you must MEMORIZE whole chapter. Very challenging professor. Hope you have a lot of studying time on your hands...
the worst teacher i have ever had! He could cair less how you do in his class he is doinging it his way and only his way!
Do not understand why he grades so hard if you know the material. Do not take his class!
Very difficult and strict teacher, but I got an A. If you know how to study and take tests like real college students, you can pass the class with a B. Keep in mind this is an actual college level class.
Dr. Reid was the worse teacher I have ever had. I am a history major and I was almost discouraged from the subject because of this man.
Yes, he is very hard, demanding and expects you to know everything that happened in America for a range of 200 years. But he knows his stuff and it is an intersting class. I took him twice, but had to work really hard to get a B
Hardest teacher I have ever had in my life. and I've been college for over 2 years now. He defientially knows his stuff, and his lectures are really detailed. You must memorize the book to pass. all 420+ pages.
If you're looking for an easy A this is not the class to take. Mr Reid is really set in his ways of teaching. His theory is that if you can't hang then you don't deserve to be here. Tests are all essay and must be very detailed. It's a hard class.
I DONT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS! Never had to drop a class before until I took him! For quizzes you have to memorize the entire chapter (expects you to know all the names in the chapter) And you can do that and still not pass the quiz.
Awful! You will NOT be able to pass his class! Don't take what he teaches!
Wow, I have to say that this was the worst class I have ever taken. Not only do you have to memorize the whole book, word for word, but when asked how he scores on a test he says" I just read the answer and dicide if it is an "A" "B&qu
Incredibly hard. First class I ever dropped.
horrible teacher! stands at the podium reads off of notes, and talkes in a monotone. For the final he expects you to know 25 essay questions he gives you ahead of time , for each you must write a page then on the final he randomly chooses 4.WORST TEACHER
Very knowledgable. Quizzes were extremely hard. Must work to earn your grade. Fair, but difficult matterial. All tests are essays. Don't recommend the class unless you have a passion for history.
Yes, he knows his stuff, but does not seem to have a clue as to how to grade test and quizes fairly. Either you agree with him or fail his class. Avoid him like the plague.
This is the worst teacher i have ever had. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! unless you want to memorize the book. His grading method is rediculous and his final is impossible. Avoid this teacher if possible.
you all are just morons
If you do the work and study, you'll do fine. It's a tough class, but you learn a lot. If you treat this professor with respect, he'll treat you with respect. He holds you accountable for your learning.
Professor Reid is an interesting guy with a unique outlook on Florida's history. However, the course itself is horrible! The book gets into such detail; almost like describing a grain of sand. You almost have to memorize the text book before class.
If you don't catch his jokes, then you aren't paying attention! Tells you what will be on tests. Will clarify anything. Fair grading. You should write down everything in class, or use a tape recorder. STUDY YOUR NOTES! For quiz's: books' people & events.
His 4 quizes are hard. You have to identify any 5 items out of the chapter (about 30 pages) and write a brief definintion :(. He gives 3 tests all essay. I would not recommend taking him.
Mr. Ried sucks as a teacher. However, I did learn alot from his class even though I got a D, his grading system sucks and he is just a bitter little man. Don't take him however do take Creasman because that is what u call a good history teacher.
Tom Reid should be teaching at Yale. His course is daunting but challenging. TAKE COPIOUS NOTES AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK (be sure to fully understance the significance of items on his verbal study guide. Be prepared! The final Essay test rivals the LSAT!
Is not eager to help at all.
I am a senior at UCF and will attend grad school next spring. Pro. Reid is the best TEACHER I have had thus far. If your lazy and act like a little kid, don't take him. You need a brain to get his jokes.
Professor Reid is a great teacher, he really knows the subject matter so dont try and b.s. your way throught the course. The only downside to the class is the book, it goes into so much detail and drags on and on. Good class though.
Mr Reid is one of the most difficult teachers that I've had, however, he is also one of favorites. Our class went from approximately 50 students to 11 this semester. Only those students that are serious about learning should take this course. He is great!
I loved this class. Mr. Reid is a great teacher who teaches you what you need to know and still expects you to learn like a college student should. It'll challenge you to take the class, if you are interested in learning in European history take it.
VERY HARD PROFESSOR!!! However, with that said, he is the best professor at Valencia. I took him for the summer B in 2003 and I worked extremely hard for my "B" that I earned. Be prepared to learn and work your butt off. This class is not for sl
After taking Mr.Reid for European and American History, I could go on jeapordy and do some serious damage. I wish I could take him for all of my history classes...I would be like the history guru!!!!
He's a really smart teacher, but his class is very hard. Graded on 2 tests-all essays, and a research paper. Not recomended if you're looking for an easy class, but you will definetly learn alot.
This teacher is a perfect example of why kids drop out of school, he is by far the worst teacher I have ever had, he grades too specific and irrelevant, big time red flag
I barely passed his class but I didn't try very hard. I enjoyed his class. He knows what he is talking about so read your book. The tests are essay and the questions come from your notes (group questions) so study those. He's a good teacher. Read the book
He's a really good teacher. I really like his grading system. Those who don't want to study or aren't interested in learning or are dumb should not take any of his courses. I got a 96%A.If you can get an A in his class, you can get one in any class here.
Firm but fair -- I consider a B in his course equal to an A!!
If you don't like history, good luck staying awake. Also good luck with the essays because if you don't add every detail you'll get like 20 points off each question. this teacher sucks. i just barely passed.
unfair you had better be a good mind reader
This class is really hard. Don't fall behind on the reading and make sure you know EVERY DETAIL for the tests. His grading is way too harsh, but you'll learn a lot in the process. Not an easy A type of class.
He is by far the worst professor I've ever had. His class is set up for students not to succeed. He is a paid teacher, not an educator. Quiz and test questions are very ambiguous and the material you are tested on isn't adequately covered in class.
Mr. Reid is not an easy teacher. However, if you study, come to class, and pay attention you will be fine. He is very straightforward and tells you at the beginning of the semester what he expects of you. If you do your work, you will learn a lot and get a good grade.
He wants you to learn, but his quizes are a ****.
He is very smart!! He knows everything about History! His Tests and quizes are VERY hard though! If you study a lot you will do fine! I kinda liked the class but I wouldn't take it if I had a lot of other classes. But I have never learned so much about history in my life. Thanks Mr. Reid!
DON'T TAKE HIM! i read his comments online and thought oh well i can take him and just try hard. he is hard to hear even if you are in the front row and his test cover 5ch and not clear on what test will be about he should be teaching a grad class not one at a community college
This is the type of teacher that you cannot and will not please. Mr. Reid is very subjective when grading your assignments and tends to grade you on HIS knowledge of the subject matter and not yours. Original class size of 36 down to 9 (yes "9")! What does that tell you. Don't do it!
he sucks
The man knows his stuff, but doesn't relay it well. If you don't need to take this class, don't. Take another social science. Quizzes/Test confusing
DONT take this class ....he is a genius with history but his students aren't...I dont think he undertands that. HE would be a wonderful teacher if he didn't grade so tough. Find a different professor if you want a A or B
I had him my first semester and it was harsh. Just know for his quizzes: all he says is to read the chapter and come to class. he will pick 5 little details from the chapter and you will have to explain them. very hard. but he is very knowlegdeable about history, really knows his stuff. helpful.
This is one professor you cannot make happy, I think I saw him smile once throghout the semester and that was when he was correcting on me on my knowledge of "european civilization", this is definitley a class you do not want to get yourself into unless you need some nap time! yea he's an a**hole
Hard Hard class but if you show up and work hard you learn a lot. He's a real nice guy.
This guy was very mellow-toned and boring. He talked at the speed of light and his explanations hardly made sense. What he TELLS you to study, is what is NEVER on the test or quizzes. He says he treats this course as a GRADUATE course. He is very unfair.
This is the first comment I have ever felt compelled to leave on this site. The goal of the semester was to see how many students would drop/fail. Our class went from 25 to down to 8-10 students. Just save your time and your money and take another professor.
This guy is pretty hard but i never learned more in a single class. Really helpful teacher. You are forced to learn to keep up and what a difference that makes. TAKE HIM!!
When I first got in his class everyone said he was hard as hell and a real ****. If you don't take the time to learn the stuff he wants you'll be at his mercy but if you do what you need to to pass he'll respect you
Excuses...excuses. The previous comments are from lazy people who wouldn't try anything hard in life because they might actually have to work at it. This professor was excellent & left me with a complete view of American history. I would recommend him if you want a challenge and are not a slacker.
I've never gotten so much out of a class. Read the chapters and highlight any word that can be defined and study these for the quizzes. Tests are all essay, study notes. Do paper early. If you want to learn about history then this is the guy to take. He's hilarious if you listen to him. Try hard.
His class is very hard and structured! I got a "D" but never learned more from a single class in my life. If you don't like to read I wouldn't sugest taking him.
Wow very hard but very good at explaining. grade the essays very tough. read the details. I wouldn't take him if You are a slacker. he has small classes by the end of the semester. But you will be able to talk to a histian about amer. history.
Everyone complaining about this class truly belongs at a community college. They are simply not ready for real college work. Dry your eyes, grow up, and realize that your hand will not be held forever. Take some responsibility. This isn’t that hard.
Dont take him unless u like to study for 100 answer exams. i hate studying and think his class sucked your grade depended on your exam grades ! Very hard
The best I have had so far at VCC. If you are a lazy or illiterate you won’t like it, so stay away.
This guy is the biggest **** ever. Don't take him! He talks too fast, is unclear, expects you to know every little detail about the subject, and takes points off for absences you don't have. He can go **** himself.
I am normally a straight A student, and I struggled with this class. He does move very fast and wants you to know every little detail about history.Exams are all short answer and essay and they need to be detailed.Term paper is easy. You must study your butt off in order to get a decent grade in here
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN THE SHORT SUMMER SESSIONS!! There is SOOOO much work involved. Reading, reading, reading. With only 2 tests, which in my opinion is bad. The more tests, the easier it is to bring up your grade. He is hard and expects much!!!!
T%his professor is a total jerk. I am a straight A student. I write papers at least three times a week for my other classes. He has given me less than stellar remarks. I would not recommentd him to my worst enemy.
This guy is a great teacher; my favorite ever.He is not for the lazy but for those who really want to learn.Don't take him if you're not ready for real college work. Tests are essays. If you listen, do the reading, and study you will not only do well but will learn more than you can imagine. Not for losers.
Fantastic professor. Slackers and bums need not register for this one because use of brain cells is required. Will give you a good grasp of history.
U wont pass. Im a 4.0 history major & published author & I never worked so hard in my life.I also never learned so much in ANY class.Class is HARD but if u love history & ur goal is 2 learn more about it hes your guy. If ur the average Valencia student (lazy) the best u can hope for is a C.I got an A but u wont.Would luv 2 take again but 4 audit
best teacher I had in college
He is very clear about what he wants on the tests, research paper, and quizzes. There are 2 test, one Final, a paper, and for quizzes(not worth many points) not much to be graded on so it can be difficult to get an A.
The first day of class he said normally only 10 people end up finishing the course... and he was right. I worked my butt off, and got a "B", but I have never learned so much in one class. Reid is a true college professor, and probably should be teaching at an Ivy League school. No one can stroll through this class... slackers beware!!!
Slackers Beware-Actual College course ahead. He is great. He tells you what he expects and there is no guessing. He is unwavering though, not flexible but i can tell you a lot about American History now than I ever could and I like history. Excellent.
run like hell, hardest class i've ever taken. guy is impossible.
Oh my god! This class was so hard. I would never want another class with this professor. Stay clear of him and you will be fine. If you are enrolled for the next semester, withdraw quickly. He will make you work so hard that it will make you cry. Couldn't stand this class.
Very hard...great class...too much to cover and too many chapters...if u doing more than two classes i wouldnt recommend doing an extra one....a bunch of short answers and essay questions....final is straight fwd though u know exactly what u r studying for..other test u at the mercy of reading a boring text.........
This guy sucked!! Has a short answer question every week!! 5 essays.. but too many short answer questions.. Only take this class if you're committed to checking in the internet frequently. He didn't tell me us had to type our papers in Word, so I did and he never graded it! He stopped answering my e-mails, too.. What a jerk! Don't take this class!!
By far the best teacher of history I have ever had. Learned so much, and he is so easy to talk to if you just put forth the effort. He has a very low tolerance for slackers, so if your a slacker don't take his class
I was very bored and very disenchanted with Professor Reid. I felt that that he was trying to prepare us for Jeopardy or the College Bowl. Did he ever think that we have other courses that we must study for?
Excellent professor...prepared me for some tough classes a Rollins, which were a breeze after taking a history course with him...but if you're lazy, don't waste your time.
This guy sucks. He bascially told me I was stupid and to drop his class. When he doesn't like your papers he won't even give you the courtsey to explain what could have been better. PREPARE TO SHOOT YOURSELF IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS. THE RUDEST MAN I EVER MEET!
good teacher if you pay attention and take lots of notes. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. he does not teach out of the book at all for history to 1877. he looks like the south bend shovel slayer from home alone and can crack a joke or too, all in all your basic collge class
oh my gosh my favorite teacher at valencia...so easy to talk to DONT BUY TEXTBOOK...it all depends on what kind of person you are...if you're a slacker and dont like work then forget it take someone else...if u love and want to learn history then he's the man...TAKE GOOD NOTES!
My current GPA is 3.37. After taking this class, I would not be surprised to see that pulled down a point. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Extremely difficult to pass successfully. Comprehensive quizzes and tests, make it harder to pass than it should be. NOT AT ALL RECOMENDED PROFESSOR.
If you really feel like working WAY TO HARD for a history class this one's for you! This guys style of teaching is pretty out there. DON'T BUY THE BOOK! P.S. DONT DO IT! TRUST ME!
this is by far the WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT VCC! seriously, DO NOT take this class with him! he is the worst professor, goes extremely fast, is so strict, cant be late, leave early, or even go to the bathroom. if he sees u with your cell phone he kicks you out of the class. high school teachers werent even this strict! he's HORRIBLE!!!
Worst professor in the teaching profession. All essay test and quizzes....oh and you do the same thing every single class, which is get in groups and define terms.
Very hard to pass this class. You do not need the textbook. I do not recommend taking this class.
He is the strictest professor I ever had! Attendance is a must, and tests are very hard. He teaches at an extremely fast pace. I ended up dropping. Take him ONLY IF you want to experience what I'm saying!
Anybody who takes him should be serious about history. Great teacher, learned more about stuff that isn't mentioned in history books. Attendance is a must but I never watched the clock in his class, it was that interesting. Took time to adjust to his style. Overall a 10. He belongs at a university not Valencia!

I always thought that anyone who dropped out of a class was just not willing to put forth any effort, but after taking Mr. Reid's summer class, I understand. I have about a 3.75 GPA, and I've always tried hard and done well in my classes, but I had to drop out of this one because it seemed near impossible to pass.
I dropped out of this class after attending the first day.He said he would mark you absent if you were late or left class to use the bathroom. I am a grown woman and I do not need to be reprimanded for using the bathroom. This guy is on a power trip. I am now taking AMH with Professor Beninanti who is great!
I took him for AMH 2020online and decided to take him again in the spring for AMH 2010online mainly because he didn't require a textbook, so it saved me money. Not bad, was easier the second time around but I made a B both times. Very nice quite easy. Just 6 discussion and 3 papers, not bad.
This guy is impossible to please. His feedback is always negative. I love the subject-could have done this semester on my own. I would have been more motivated....
Tests are essays only with specifics that are nearly impossible to comprehend what is needed. Attendance is childish. If you need to use the bathroom you automatically lose a letter grade for your final grade. Don't take this class you will regret it. Flip flops on dates making learning difficult. The requirements are nearly impossible to meet.
The class is definitely hard, but not impossible. I'm not that into history, and I still was able to get an 'A' with hard work. If you ask Prof. Reid a question, he'll ramble on for 10 minutes about something totally different, but he was nice enough. It was a little weird that we couldn't leave for the bathroom without being marked absent.
If you are looking to get by really easily, don't take this class!!!!!!!!!!
He is a great teacher! ADVICE FOR SURVIVING; take great notes. You only need to know DEFINITION & SIGNIFICANCE, no need to write more! He gives points for efforts, but quizzes/test are ALL essay so you can't BS your way through. He's by no means EASY, but you'll learn your history..isn't that what you're PAYING for?
Only 4 students out of 23 made it to the final exam. That is absolutely ridiculous and reflects more on him than anything else. This professor sucks and should be FIRED because he's definitely on a power trip.
Online Class- The discussion questions were easy if you did them early, no student could repeat the same subject. No exceptions. The 2 essays were not as easy, never sure what he was exactly looking for. Looking for an easy A, effort and hard work, not appreciated. Good luck!
Prof. Reid expects you to truly understand events in history, not just memorize dates. He is very interesting and knows the material. You will come out of this class understanding historical events (and feeling pretty dang smart). He is difficult, so take the class serious and TAKE GREAT NOTES (write down everything!!).
EXTREMELY HARD!! ONLY take him if you need a history course and he is the only professor option. I dropped this class because it was impossible to pass! It's great that he isn't in to dates, but you have to know everything about everything in history, be able to connect it all, and he is not that clear in speaking. Just thought I'd warn you!!!!!!
best teach I've ever had, valencia or UCF...helps students a lot. If you work hard he will love you, if you don't work hard he will hate you.
This class was so hard and I love history. It's not that's it a lot of work, it's just that (online) for all the assignments your not allowed to use the textbook as a source only journals etc. If you don't have a lot of time to go digging through some history journals then this can be very difficult. You must site EVERYTHING! Research! Research!
He is an awesome teacher, and if you listen hard enough, he is pretty hilarious. You don't really need a textbook, but you have to write down everything he says, interpret it, and connect it all. He takes into consideration if you try hard and gives an extra credit opportunity.
Overly difficult and overly strict. Not recommended.
Hardest professor I ever had. Gives you a zero for discussion pts (online class)if someone has already picked that topic. Do not recommend him.
Start this course expecting alot of research:described as a course of "self-thinking": it is exactly that. I am an A student yet was struggling to make a C. Prof. seemed clear in insruction, but when you do the assignments, you will be shocked at the low grade on the paper. As far as disscussions:the earlier you do them the better.
Clear on what he wants you to read. But the all the quiz's are 5 essay questions. Not recommending this teacher. I love history, but this is just a pain. One mistake on a answer and its marked wrong. Textbooks can't be used in class, just notes. Make sure you do them too because the decided if you get your + / - for the days discussions.
This guy is the absolute worst. Have him for american history online and he just says write about this or that, and then when he grades you he gives you terrible scores. If u happen to write a discussion on a topic someone before u used he gives u a zero...says its a thinking course but gives no direction.boycott this guy he shouldnt be teaching
Seriously. This is the hardest class i have ever taken. I thought it was just me who was studying so much and still failing... but then i noticed the class getting smaller every week. Also he talks so fast and low i could never understand him! and his quizzes have questions that are so out of the blue you dont even remember discussing that.DONT TAK
NOTE TO SLACKERS: If college were a breeze then any idiot walking on the street would have a degree...Prof. Reid was BY-FAR the BEST history teacher that I have ever had in my life! I graduated from UCF in 05 with a Social Science ED. degree and his class definately prepared me to teach my own history classes.I will never forget his class.
I've learned more in this class than I have in any other class I've taken. That being said, do not take this class if you value your GPA! He slams your answers on tests even though they are correct because you may have missed one tiny minute detail. He is ridiculous on attendance; if you leave a class to use the bathroom it's an absence. Avoid him!
Not a good professor for this subject. "Reidiclous" on all test grading. Professor should be removed from VCC. Didn't learn much even though I attended all but one day. Recommendation: DON'T TAKE
Prof. Reid is truly a great teacher. His class is the hardest I have every taken, but also the class I have learned the most in. History hasn't always been my favorite subject but I always found myself entertained in his class. Respect the teacher and be respected. Simple as that!
One of the hardest profs I've had! I've retained a lot of what he taught, but only because his tests were brutal and I had to study hard to get acceptable grades. He's attendance-crazy and dropped me a letter grade for being a few mins late every now and then... otherwise I'd have an A. He's helpful if you ask for it and knows you're trying.
I took professor Reid a few years ago, and I recently graduated from UCF with a degree in history and comparative politics. Now that I have graduated, I can honestly say that professor Reid is one of the most knowledgable and effective professors that I have ever had. His class is difficult and demanding, but if you have an interest in learning its
