Great Professor. I took the class durring spring semester online. Very fair and answers e-mails right away. Everything you could want in an online teacher. I got an A in the class, but you have to work for it. There arnt't to many points so it is easy to slip from an A to a B.
SUPER GREAT Professor! I took her class during spring semester online. For an online class the teacher really stayed involved while answering questions right away. Her grading was extremely fair and while I did work hard, it was never dull. The pace was steady and overall I received an A in the class.
DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ; HE'S OBNOXIOUS & INCONSIDERATE. HE'S NOT CLEAR AND YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HE WANTS TURNED IN BEFORE YOU RECEIVE A LOW POINT GRADE. HE ALSO REPLIES TO EVERYONE'S MESSAGES LIKE HE KNOWS MORE; LIKE THE LADY ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. THE WORK IS SO MUCH THAT YOUR OTHER CLASSES WILL SUFFER. SUGGESTION: TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
Prof. Hassman is a blessing. I took her online class this fall and while the pace was accelerated it wasn't too difficult to keep up with the work. I liked the texts and the insightful discussion threads. She was very quick to answer e-mail questions and posted meaningful responses to my journal entries. She is an asset to her field!
Absolutely one of the best classes I have taken. The texts chosen can be life changing if you allow them to be. Professor is extremely helpful and available. Fair grading. Work load is intense but interesting stuff. I had to work hard for my A.
Took Ms.Hassman's eng.2 online for winter. The most INTENSE class of my life. Never did I think I would read an entire book in 5 days. However, I learned SO much! If you hate writing, I suggest you take another class. If you hate participation, take another class. Easy A? Nope, not here! She's a great professor and SUPER smart.
Prof. Hassman is an excellent instructor. I took this class online during winter semester. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to take an online class. Prof. Hassman's instructions are very clear, the assignments are manageable, and you get a lot of feedback through the discussion areas. Great class to sharpen your critical thinking skills!
Attempted in the Fall cause I needed this class for a Transfer; boy did I judge wrong! From the start the grades went bad due to lack of clarity. My "A" was at a "C" in 2 weeks due to the low grading and Perfectionism she tried to impose; I quickly dropped & I'm taking it at the University cause i didn't wish too lose another semester. :( :( :(
The books we read for this class was interesting. However, whenever I asked a question, the professor would respond thinking I'm stupid or something. I took the online class but I recommend taking eng 2 in a real class room setting.
Took the online 6-week Eng 2 class, it was the most intense accelerated class I've ever had (I've done 10 so far!) The work is exactly as the semester version. Do NOT take this class accelerated, teacher shows no mercy. She does not grade anything on time, but doesn't accept any late work. Did learn a lot, though. Great textbooks!
What a horrible professor. She assigns so much work yet she is unable to get back the assignments in a timely manner. Does this in any way seem fair? She still has not graded work from the very first week. Good luck!
Are you guys for real? Prof Hassman is smart, writes SO well and understands that we all have issues.Ok,she doesn't grade fast but she has 2classes w/ more than 20 students, who each turns in 4 essays=at least 160 essays to grade in 6 weeks! The workload is reasonnable for us:1 essay every 10 day. Don't take an accelerated course if you wanna slack
Extremely difficult teacher. What would normally be considered "A" work was at best a "C" usually a "D." Shows no mercy when grading. Textbooks were very interesting, the only plus of the experience.
She is very very helpful. Slow grader but it is worth the wait. Does amazing notes on your papers so you can improve, very understanding. If you improve over the semester she rewards you, even if you are not the best writer. GREAT TEACHER!!
Tupelo's course was nothing short of a pleasure, intellectually. She wants students to do well, and she offers detailed notes to guide students towards that improvement. She responds to e-mails promptly, participates in student threads, and offers insightful advice. The assigned texts were focused on Los Angeles history. Very interesting, very fun.
Prof. Hassman is an extremely difficult grader and has high expectations of time and involvement, but I have never learned so much in a class, especially an 8 week course. Readings were interesting and my writing has improved exponentially. I would definitely recommend this class if you want to improve your writing skills and learn a bit about LA.
She has HIGH expectations. I had 5 newspaper editors help me on my final paper and it was 'A' quality with other instructors I had before, but she gave me a 'C'. She uses a weird form of MLA so careful! ALWAYS read. Take the online class if you have all the time in the world. :P
Old school professor.Wants u to write 4 analytical essays. Not very hard.Discussions are awfully boring and u need to participate all the time.Reading is partially awesome, partially superboring.Grading system is superweird. She's nice and helpful if u have trouble understanding things.I took this class online.good class for people without busy sched
The best professor I've had so far. She responds fast, she's helpful, and she's clear on what she expects from her students. Besides her grading system (it's a little tight), she gets an A from me. I took the 8 week online class, and it was well structured and easier to follow than other 17 week courses I've taken. Oh! I learned a lot too.
Very hard class and tough grader but I have to admit in a fair way. Quite an activist and a bit conceded at times, ok I guess. Highly intellectual. Lots of reading. It?s a hard class but not impossible to get an A. Take her online class. I give her a B+ 1 point short of an A not for hardness, I respect that, but for being at times too subjective.
took the 8 week online course. verrrry difficult. weekly essays, she expects a lot from students. At first it was a bit overwhelming but after a while you get the hang of it. offers extra credit options. takes a long time to grade all assignments. not participating in discussions can be hurtful to your grade.overall a great professor
8 wk online course was grueling and will dampen your spirits, but as long as you make sure you're participating in class, you'll be ok. also, it is IMPERATIVE that you know how to write essays otherwise don't even think about taking her.
Great teacher! The readings were interesting and she was involved in our online discussions. I felt like she was involved in every aspect of what we did, not just counting to make sure we "showed up." GRADES HARD ON PAPERS. You think you know how to write an essay? You don't. Very tough with that, but if you do everything else you'll still get an A
She is awesome. Take her class without even thinking a second.
Took her 8 week class and I must warn you that it is fast-paced, hard, yet fun. Her reading assignments consisted of LA Based Literature which was very interesting. She definately helped improve my work/writing style. I got an A in her class, it is definately possible.
I took the same section (summer '10) as person below and got an A too. She is a super smart person and witty as well. You MUST start early. You have to make your own post for every assigned topic AND comment on other people's posts. Do that early, within the first day of the unit. Listen to her suggestions. Not so hard to get an A if you try.
I absolutely love this professor! He is wonderful! He gives great feed back and is really on top of everything. Usually, with online courses, the teachers can kind of... suck. Not Hassman! I fully recommend taking him, I just wish I could have taken an in class class with him.
I am currently taking Hassman's online 8-week English 2 class. The course focuses entirely on the literature of LA. Some of the most compelling stuff I've ever read! Find her, take her!
The online class is clear and concise. HARD GRADER especially on papers. I usually do well in English and my papers were marked from top to bottom. Great learning experience. Hard class.
Avoid this class at all means. Unless you have nothing else to do, but to take this class. Professor rarely responds to email and takes forever to grade papers but expects papers to be perfect. Reading materials were interesting. Professor belittles you for asking questions.
Online 6 weeks. You can do well in the class but it takes A LOT. Discussions are super involved you also have to participate early. Journals are easy just make sure u don't miss one. Readings are interesting. Her assignments are not clear and when u ask for help she is still not clear. Overall class is hard and she takes FOREVER to grade papers.
Horrible teacher. Material is interesting (thought provoking)but teacher isn't accessible for help and takes forever to respond to email /grade papers. Do yourself a favor- don't take class unless you have nothing else to do. Directions/expectations are confusing and prof will put you down for even asking. Professor really makes SMC look bad.
Horrible teacher. I took online class. On week 5, still have not received the grade for 1st paper, 3rd paper due on 6th week. Whatever you ask you will NEVER get a direct answer. If you have a chance, do not take her!
Had her online for Eng2. It?s not easy but you will learn. Participate in discussions early and try to complete the assigned readings early, it makes postings easier to participate in. It?s a good class and she?s a good instructor.
I feel like these comments are unfair. Hassman's 5 week course is definitely hard work, but you are adequately warned from the first day. She knows her material well and you will become a better writer for it. She is very friendly and understanding. However, I don't recommend taking this if you have a full course load. It takes up a lot of time.
I wish I had looked at this before I took the class. The reading/listening is interesting, but similar to others grading and questions are not answered in a timely matter and the responses are unclear. Writing is subjective so you must take that into account when chosing an instructor.
I don't understand the comments stating that she is confusing or late with grading. She was a great teacher and always very prompt and helpful with her responses. She wants you to do well you just have to put in the effort, obviously it is not just an Easy A, but it is very possible to get an A. This class definitely made me a much better writer.
Positive: Clear instructions, fast grading, willing to go above and beyond for her students, very involved in an online class, more so than other professors, very interesting literature, various assignments=less boring. Negative: She's just a lovely lady, no negatives found!!!
Great teacher! This class is far from an easy A. She would be considered a hard teacher simply because she won't give you the answer, she guides you to find the answers yourself. I am so glad I took this class. It helped me to truly understand what it means to write a good paper and I got into UCLA as a result of the skills I learned in this class.
1. Heavy workload. 2. Teacher is an amazing writer 3. Her prompts are verbose and confusing, so make sure to clarify. 4. Hard enough to be a good prep for academic writing, if you care. 5. Readings were thematic and interesting. 6. Def not an easy A even though I got one. 7. Communicate often and work hard to get an A.
8 week class. I chose this class b/c of the books she required, they all have to do with CA. Really interesting. A LOT of reading and A LOT of writing. REQUIRED to discuss every week (expect to type several paragraphs) plus a paper due every other week. Papers got very hard toward the end. Challenging but learned a lot. She wants you to do well.
I took her 8-week online class. This class is not THAT difficult, though there is a lot of work and a lot to read. Discussions are mandatory, but are pretty straight forward. The hardest part is the 4 essays - she is a VERY tough grader.
Avoid her if you can ! I took her 6 weeks online class . too much reading and too much work and no matter how hard you try , she wont be satisfied. She expects you to leave your life aside and just do the assignments . She will use any excuse to deduct points ! Its not easy to be a good teacher ! Avoid her .
Extremely difficult class, but such interesting literature! If you have a full schedule I would not recommend taking this class. Take this class only if you give it your full attention. The sheer volume of work she gives might be detrimental to your grade. Mandatory discussions, prepare to read and write a lot.
Really tough grader, hard to keep up with. Most of the assignments weren't explained clearly & were confusing. Take her at your own risk.
Do NOT take this course. Too many weekly discussions which require that you post almost daily. About 15 posts a week. Also have to read 3 books and write 4 essays. VERY hard grader and is NOT helpful. Criticizes work but does not give constructive criticism. Whatever you write is never good enough and she takes forever to respond to questions.
Wouldn't recommend taking this professor. LOTS of work involved, more than other english classes. She is nice, at least, but not that clear with her assignments. This is on purpose, because she wants you to "critically analyze" everything. She demands a lot for the discussion, with at least 12 responses (lengthy) per week. Better profs out there.
Professor Hassman is an excellent teacher who makes you think and doesn't just go with the flow. She's beyond smart , witty and tough (in a good way). For English 2 the subject matter was very timely and compelling , making the class every better. I struggled somewhat, but really appreciated her dedication to the class and the art of writing.
The worse online class EVER. I took her 8 weeks summer class and I should say she was even mean without seeing you! Her emails tune are so mean! I had full 8 weeks of stress. Essays are never clear, you never know what she want to see and finally never expect a good grade. Typical college professor who thinks their class should be the hardest.
Her feedback is not helpful, she does not respond to emails in a timely matter, doesn't give a lot of time for assignments and they are sometimes unclear. Whatever you say is never good enough and she sometimes has a rude tone in her writing. I wish I took the class with a different teacher.
Professor Hassman is an excellent teacher, but her class is not easy! I took this condensed 8-week class online, and it was very intense. Be prepared to put in a lot of hours on projects and discussion boards. Read the syllabus! Follow directions and put in the effort, and you will get a lot out of the class. Her feedback was spot-on and invaluable
This Professor is ridiculous. Her lack of response is simply irresponsible. I had her 6-week class and didn't get my grades back till the 6th week. How are you supposed to improve if you don't know where you stand. Simply doing everything she asks is still not good enough. Grading is beyond difficult and AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST! Rating 2.0!!
not good choice to take this class, lots of works and confused and useless feedback.
She seemed extremely erratic and tough and hard to read in my online class. Instructions were unclear, her attitude was rude at times (disguised In comments about how much she cares about her students learning which may be true)and Ugh you basically have to agree with every type of view she has or else you'll get bad grades. She is arrogant & odd
Avoid!!! Horribly difficult grader but feedback is confusing and pointless so it makes it even worse. I aced english 1 (even though it was hard work) but this class was a complete disaster bc she is impossible to please
She's a wonderful teacher-- I highly recommend taking her class. She'll really inspire you to write to the best of your ability. The class takes a lot of time and effort, but if you like writing and want to become better at it, then you'll greatly benefit from taking her class.
This class requires regular participation and its and college course so it is not a class to simply skate through. It requires effort. Different sales of writing is explored but if you read the assignments, and stay on top of the material the writing part comes. Feedback is excellent. She really engages everyone to participate together.
AVOID!!! Her online 8week class is TERRIBLE!!! I take all online and I have never experienced a teacher that personally attacks you and thinks she is giving "constructive criticism". The whole class is about black-on-black homicide in LA. Completely racially and politically driven class! Lots of reading and preassigned online group projects!
The overall class topic is racism, homicide, and Los Angeles -- so poignant to our times. Her feedback is amazing, so helpful... she's funny and engaging, and breaks down critical analysis in terms that are easy to understand. I had no idea this class would be so cool. I'm pleasantly shocked!
Awful teacher. I took English 1 by choice, and I wish I hadn't. She doesn't give clear instructions, and blames the students when they get it wrong. This class consisted of a ton of tiny, annoying assignments. The reading was basically a picture book. Some students had awful grammar of some of my classmates, but she made no effort to help them.0/10
As a STEM major I hated the class. Too much work for a brainless subject that doesn't require any brain power. She's a sweet lady but if you're a science/math guy you'll hate the class. Too much time for such a mediocre subject. Discussions once a week, essays, and tests. Meh level class. Also a bunch of online group projects which I hated.
A common complaint on this site is that she attacks you and calls it constructive criticism. I made the mistake that I assumed the students complaining about this just didn't want to work hard in a class, but I learned that she is very guilty of it. The reading was amazing, despite her petty teaching methods, I'm glad I was able to read those books
This class is all about Los Angeles. I took it from out of state balancing work, family & school knowing nothing about LA & expected to hate it. However, I loved it and got an A+. Ignore all the other reviews; Professor Hassman requires you work for your grade, but you will learn plenty from all the work you do in the class. Take the course!
I took her online class, and it was surprisingly easy. I ended up getting an A+ in the entire class and on both papers. I took it during the winter session so it was faster paced, and we had assignments due basically every 2 or 3 days. We were supposed to read a book, but I never really read it. Never met her in person, but would love to.
Tupelo is erratic, highly illogical, and incessently prone to changing her mind - about everything. No consistency in communication and feedback, and frequently contradicts herself. Discussion topics were highly provocative (reactionary) and the main text was about psychedelics. Essay feedback was extremely contradictory and pointless. DON'T TAKE!
She constantly contradicts herself, she asks you to write an argumentative paper but only gives you onside of the argument. Her class is racially and politically charged and it is very obvious in where she stands in her views. She pushes agenda and grades unfairly when you have a dissenting opinion. it is an easy A if you can conform to her views.
I did not like this class. The subject matter was ill chosen and the feedback was way to general to be able to make any real kind of improvement. I have taken English classes before and haven't been graded so poorly in the past, I just needed to drop or couldn't transfer for other reasons. I would not suggest anyone take this class.
Great professor! Offers a chance to re grade material for better grade. Very fun and exciting class. Would definitely take again
I took Eng 1 and Eng 2 with Prof. Tupelo because she was THAT good. This is the only English class I have ever taken where I actually walked away a better writer. Prof. Tupelo is extremely caring and provides so many resources to ensure your success in the class. As long as you put effort into your work you will get an A.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN. I took her class online so I didnt get to meet her but she was still a great professor virtually. I took the class in 8 weeks (which is half the usual time) and we read one novel, wrote three papers, and had one group project with three parts to it. She was very helpful and sweet and she gave really good feedback on my essays.
I honestly don't understand the negative reviews for Hassman at all. She is so sweet and caring, and as long as you put the effort in its an easy A. There were a couple times where I couldn't complete things on time and she was very understanding. She also goes above and beyond with feedback for all assignments, offering very helpful advice.
Professor Hassman is a good and caring professor. She's a tough grader but it is for a reason. She wants people to work for their grade. I didn't get the best grades at first but after working on it and asking her what I was doing wrong, I finally earned that A. She is a very understanding professor and if you want to get better at writing take her
Professor Hassman is the most caring and understanding professor I've ever had. She makes participating in discussions and doing assignments very accessible and easygoing, and makes sure students know they can reach out. Constantly extended deadlines to give us more time, and is very up to date. I truly enjoyed every minute of this class!
This class was so fun and easy! It was a winter semester class so most things were due on the last day of the semester.
Professor Hassman is such a joy to work with! I cannot recommend their creative writing class enough. She's patient, offers excellent criticisms, and is very patient/understanding when it comes to offering extensions for your work. If you're looking for an encouraging environment to enhance your writing skills, this is the class!
I took Professor Hassman in my senior year of high school as a dual enrolled student in a fully asynchronous class. The week's work probably took me anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Professor Hassman is also very lenient and extended multiple things for me and gave full credit. She also has a weekly zoom you can go in if you need help (you won't).
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Hassman was so fun. I loved taking their class. They were super helpful and kind. I loved the essays given and the feedback they gave. Awesome class!
Professor Hassman was a great professor. They were amazing and caring, I took her Hum 1 class and it was interesting. They are always supporting and is very clear. Professor Hassman material isn't bad it can feel a lot but it's not hard. I would recommend for others to take.
I took her Humanties online. She really helped me fill gaps in my knowledge of history. Each week you'll have a four or five 150 character posts that are based on readings. The readings are usually short.
This scholar's class was amazing and informational. Despite a lack of urgency (typically more than 3 days to get back to an email) when responding to emails due to personal life, this class was stress-free. I would do this class over again in a heart beat.
Took her HUM 26 class. Pretty chill with deadlines and assignments. Does not grade your work right away, so you have to wait a few weeks for that. Most of your grade will come from completing discussion questions, which are sometimes long worded and you have to actually spend time on completing them. Other than that you'll have some group projects
This is by far the worst teacher for any class that I have ever taken in my entire life. The teacher does not even exist, she doesn't reply to emails, she doesn't reply to canvas messages, she grades your assignments 3 months later with AI generated grade replies, and tricked the entire class out of discussion points. DO NOT TAKE. PLEASE.
Flexible deadlines, she is enthusiastic and quite possibly the easiest grader. No guys... her feedback isn't A.I she just genuinely talks like that (I checked lol). I cannot lie I see a lot of people using A.I on her discussion posts so they can't be talking... Group projects are so easy just depends if you are working with people or robots!
I took this class during the winter, and it was very easy. It's a straightforward English class with discussions and essays, and the prompts are enjoyable—you even get to choose from 2-3 options. The professor was funny and provided helpful feedback. Overall, a fun course to take.
I really liked this class and she is very encouraging. I will say she is hard to reach and confusing at times but she doesn't give much work and is very understanding if you turn in work late! You do a lot of weekly discussions and only 3 main essays but if you are good at english you will do great. She isn't a tough grader and very kind!
