he's a bit weird and boring....
he's makes psychology fun with his little jokes here and there, and is detailed
he makes the class really interesting. also very nice when it comes to 7.5% extra credit n nice with the grading
Very detailed in tests...like names and dates. Be ready to know the book cover to cover and recite back verbatim.
Not bad prof. Lectures are somwhat interesting, the videos are quite good thou. Tests are pretty detailed. Very hard to get over a 40/50 on tests. No curves. There is extra credit can drasticaly increase grade. Study guide with book, VERY HELPFUL ace test
No Comments
he's awsome if you come to class and pay attention... he's always ready to help you if you need extra help too, and his lectures are interesting even if the material itself can get boring
I believe he went to Yale or Stanford, and have taught at schools of the same standing. Impressive and professional; always comes to class in a suit and knows exactly what he's talking about. Notes on blackboard. Not the easiest but I got a B+ without a whole lot of reading or class-going.
Great professor, easy class, almost never went to class and got a B+
I never went to class..Just read and and looked at lecture notes on Blackboard..got an A-. His exams are a little tough, but nothing extreme
Very professional. His tests are pretty detailed and difficult to get over a 90. Lectures are usually interesting with his videos but not really mandatory to attend in order to get a good grade. His extra credit helps alot to get an A in his class. You have to read the book.
He's a great professor..He shows concern for students, and his TA's are really nice.He gives a review sheet and has his TA's go over each thing before the tests.I never really went to class, and got an A-in his class.Gives a 3% easy in class extra-credit experiment too. I would recommend him for anyone wanting to take PSY 103, heard others are bad.
this class was unbelieveably boring but its not the professor's fault. he tried to make it interesting and even cut the class time down from an hour and 20 min to 55 min. he's funny but he gives suprise quizzes when the least amount of people are in class. class sucks but it has to be taken if you're a psych major
The class is pretty easy.. he makes it bearable.. u have to read the book.. his TA's are helpful and he gives review sheets and the notes on blackboard
he was awful. Unfair grading, gives students no chance to boost their grade after scores have been calculated (as he likes to say). Extremely boring. Gives out progress checks that are not that hard but they are given randomly. I hafta retake this course cuz I missed 2 progress checks, even tho i did decently in class
His accent is so hard to understand. He has no enthusiasm. He's like the guy from the dry eyes commercial. I learned more form reading the text book than listening to him lecture. Just read the book and you'll be fine.
I didn't detect a THICK accent. The class is extremely dry, but there's no helping that. The man blissfully cut it down to like a 40 minute class instead of the hour and 20 minutes it was supposed to be. I think he's great and he tries to inject as much humor as possible. I would definitely recommend him
He talks in detail and uses many examples and videos to explain and interest us. the problem is that though his exam questions cover the whole textbook(pretty detailed exam), what he talks about is what he is interested in.so you really have to read EVERYthing and memorize every single thing in it for the exams.
k hes hottt! and his accent...wow. but hes an awesome teacher. he shows alot of videos that are really helpful and gives alot of examples. u have to read the textbook tho or u wont do well on the tests. I just didnt like the way he marked his tests. its hard to get an A in this class.....but hes nice to look at :)
his grading system is so strict!! its so impossible to get above B+ in his class! and I only have a B when i have all these decent test grades. compared to the other psy class, i couldve gotten an A- it's so unfair!!
I think he teach better than other intro to psy professor. He test is quite reasonable too. As long as you go to the class and read the textbook, you will be fine.
His cute accent can't change the fact that his grading curve doesn't exist and his grading method probably screwed about 475 kids in the 500 person class. So, what can I say? Thank you for making me study my butt off and messing up my GPA? If you can, avoid taking him, I'm sure there are worse teachers, he isn't THAT bad, but it wasn't worrh it
The tests are very random with the information, if you want to get an A you MUST read textbook and attend class
The subject: interesting. The grading system: not.
good professor, too much information for one course
He is an amazing individual! He really knows his stuff. Just read the book and go to lectures for his pop questions that show up on the exams! Very approachable guy - shows concern for students grade also
Good teacher, expensive book, quizzes and 3/4 exams.
Nice, tries to make class interesting with small jokes and videos. Makes material pretty clear, tries to be helpful. Very knowledgeable in his field. Straightforward class, exam-based. Didn't post lecture notes, so attendance is must, but he gives students more time to copy them if asked. Decent-looking too =) Recommend him for this class.
ONE WORD OF ADVICE = GO TO CLASS! He has these sporatic attendence quizzes and the way his grading system works if you miss even just two you are going to fail! Other then that tests were easy as long as you read the text!
HE WAS THE WORST PROFESSOR I EVER HAD!!!! WORKED HARD ON THE PAPER FOR THE CLASS AND STILL HAVE TO RETAKE THE CLASS!!! WAY TO MUCH WORK FOR ONE CLASS AND IF YOUR NOT GOING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL FOR PSYCHOLOGY IT IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!!!! IT SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED FOR YOUR UNDERGRAD!
text book is very important. he can be extremely boring at times. if you do not have a sincere and intense interest in the subject i suggest NOT taking it. i attended all but 2 lectures, took notes, and i still did poorly in his class
This guy was really cool. He always had theme centered psych experiments that he would share in class...usually involving candy. This class was fun.
He is a extremely informed on his topic. He does many studies and has even appeared on CNN. THe man is smart. And cute. Very cute.
I enjoyed this class, the guy aside from being clear with examples and as much participation as a 200 person class can have. He has a friday lunch with him thing that offers anyone who has questions to ask them. Tests are semi-hard just read and remember stuff and you do just fine they are all multiple choice for my class (intro to psych)
the material for this class is easy. if you want, you can learn the material for the whole semester in 2 weeks by yourself easily. but just to make our lives more difficult, Turhan Canli had us come to his useless lectures by giving 6 pop quizzes. those can really kill your grade.
Shows a video almost every lecture (sometimes 2-3) giving you information you'd never find in the textbook. Asks for ideas from students frequently. Conducts experiments on the class (e.g. reads a list of #s out, who can recite all 10?) to keep students interested. Holds a weekly lunch for 25 students to discuss his field with him. Awesome prof :)
Good teacher but tests arent that fair
He's a great professor with a lively voice and common sense.
Very clear, very interesting. Read the textbook and go to lectures and you should have no problem with the tests.
I went into this class thinking nothing of it, I left it declaring my major psychology. Tests are easy, read the book and power points. His very clear with his teachings, you will learn a lot. I strongly suggest taking him.
You have to read EVERY word written in that textbook or else you wont do well. His final was hard. He was inconsiderate in a way, because many people aren't psych majors and he put uneccessary questions which were very detailed that you'd think weren't as imortant as other info that you learned =/
Read the book like there is no tomorrow... intro class, teacher has a monotonous voice, 50 multiple choice questions on all tests. not a fun class for a DEC
Surprise quizzes, final and midterm and a long paper. Hard class, take it during the summer if you can. If not, go to class, put attention to it and start working on the paper early.
good professor but it is not necessary to go to class. If you read the textbook, then you'll be fine.
He knows what he is doing and is very helpful. However it is not necessary to go to class. There is a lot to memorize and the textbook can take care of that. He explains everything very well. I would recommend if you are interested in the subject and are a diligent student.
Class was easy as long as you read the textbook chapters assigned in class to get a good grade on the exams. Attendance isn't mandatory, but the class was still pretty interesting that you wouldn't mind going. He clearly explains the lesson. Only neg. is that it feels like a long class. Plus, get to do experiments related to the course.
pretty easy. just read the textbook and for the rec part, you better pray you have a lenient instructor who grades your paper
He's a really great professor.. Although the material itself may be a lot, as long as you read the textbook before the tests there will be no surprises.. Attendance isn't mandatory and he lets you drop some of your lowest scores. He even let us use a cheat sheet once. Not a lot of work other than the reading... Interesting lectures too.
He is great. Explains everything very clearly, asks opinions from the class and shows interesting videos of experiments.
Didn't like him as a professor. Material on the tests differed from what was went over in class and on the review sheet. Tests were hard and confusing sometimes.
so much reading to pass the exams. 5 exams but takes the 4 highest. offers extra credit. class was sometimes useless to attend.
His lectures are useless, you only need the text pass his class, but that's where the problem comes from. His tests are hard, b/c they're all asking the smallest, most insignificant details in your text; so if you don't have the time to literally memorize THE ENTIRE TEXT, instead of just getting the important concepts, you should not consider him.
You practically need to know everything from the first to last chapter of the textbook. Tests are difficult and focuses on the details of the text. And while there are extra credit opportunities near the end of the semester, the tests are what's worth the majority of your grade. This is one class that you would have to study a lot in.
Lectures are useless, you need to read the textbook basically to learn everythng..tests are hard and he does not spend enough time exlaining things..does not give you a curve at end of grade and extra credit is only 6 pts max you can get for writting basically essays
If you're looking for an easy DEC where you have to do nothing, this isn't it. That said, if you don't mind reading the textbook, this could be a good class. You really have to read the textbook before each class and study to do well, but it is possible. Five tests, but he drops two. Some extra credit, but not much. Have to do psych experiments.
too much reading, tests are difficult
He is a bad professor. He let one of his TA's teach half of the lectures. I did not learn anything and his exams were very very difficult. Avoid taking his classes.
Ridiculous amount of work. I read every chapter, took notes on everything, and even listened to the audio chapters online. Up to date, this is the ONLY class I haven't gotten an A in, and I can without a doubt say I've never put as much effort and time into any other class than I did for this one.
He was the worst Psychology professor I had ever taken. I almost changed my major of psychology because of this class. He let his TA teach for most of the year and his lectures were very unclear. I took great notes and attended every class. He still put weird things on the exam that just baffled me. I will never EVER take another class with him
Attendance is not mandatory, class is fun but all of the tests are 100% out of the book... and the book is HUGE. I wouldn't recommend him for introductory psychology. In addition to that, he requires 5 credit hours of psychology experiments to pass the course!
On his first two tests, almost everyone I knew bombed the exam since he used a lot of the material in the book. However, after that, he started to use materials in the powerpoint more then the book. He even included extra credits on each of his exams AND he drops the 2 lowest ones. If he does this next year, I would highly recommend him.
Most of his tests are all lecture based so if you just go to class or watch his echos you'll do fine. He's a funny guy and a very clear explainer, plus his lectures almost always have a video. Recommended!
great professor. you would never expect a person who went to Stanford and Yale to be as chill and relaxed as he is. All you need to study is the lecture notes which are really interesting and easy and you're set for an A. there is no homework at all! over all great class!
Really nice and relaxed professor. He uses a lot of material from the textbook that he doesn't cover in the lectures, probably why I didn't do well on the first quizzes. Must read the textbook for this class.
Great professor. His lectures are very interesting and for the most part easy to understand. The quizzes weren't bad as long as you review the lectures. One horrible thing is the final was cumulative. Not only was it cumulative but extremely detailed and hard as well as 40% of your grade. If you can get by that its a great class.
His lectures are extremely boring. Attendance isn't mandatory at all, since he puts everything on blackboard. For his quizzes you do need to pretty much memorize the textbook. His quizzes are very detailed. The lectures were pretty boring. I guess it was alright, got an A-.
He is one of the sweetest professors and the great thing about this class is that he posts all his notes online and also records and posts his lectures so you don't even have to go to class. Without reading the textbook you'll probably get a B-. No papers, just 5 tests and a final and he drops the lowest 2 grades.
Great professor, if you don't think that professors should really have to teach. He relies heavily on videos and doesn't seem to say much of substance on his own. He does try to make sure that students understand the concepts. For the quizzes, there is a huge amount of info that you have to know that isn't in the slides, but is in the textbook.
Sooo boring. I had a really hard time staying in class. He recently changed his exams to be more lecture based as opposed to textbook based which makes them super easy if you review the notes. You should skim through the echoes to find the videos he plays in class. Not too difficult. But again, really boring.
I do not recommend this course!!! The structure is this: the class is divided into groups of 4 to present a chapter of his very difficult book to the class for the entire lecture period. You can't ask him for help because I'm not sure he even knows what's going on. So you're learning from a bunch of students who barely get what they're teaching you
Turhan Canli is by far the most versatile professor in Psychology Department ever. I learned more about genetics in this class than BIO 320 or BIO 302. This professor has his foot in almost every feat related to his particular field of study (Radiology, Genetics, Psychology, Neurology, etc.). I would take his class again because he is a gift to SBU
AVOID. Half of the lectures are presentations from students who throw together a powerpoint the night before with littleno background on the subject and try to teach it. The exams are based on the student presentations. A large portion of the material isn't very interesting with little relevance for most of the students who take the class.
There are 6 tests in total, but if you do well, you can skip the final. HE GIVES A TONS OF EXTRACREDIT, 10 points on each test!!! jut think about it !!! He gives review session before the test to help students. Some material are boring but it can be interest if you actually pay attention in class.
He's a great lecturer, he makes sure you get the info during lecture, says that you don't need prior knowledge which is true, wouldn't mind answering your question during class either. Has extra credit!!! Main reason why passing this with an A is definitely not difficult! As long as you listen to him in class while he goes through slides u r set!
He is really nice!! Very patient, you can ask whatever you get confused with. Only what he has talked about in class will be on test and it's only MC. But sometimes he will leave some blank on lecture so even attendance is not mandatory, I think it's better to go.
Have to say I love him! I took neuropsych, a little bit hard. Attendance is not required but if you don't go I think it will be hard to pass. I did a lot of self-working on textbook and I got a really good points (tho he still did a curve and said average grade is not good I guess someone just cut class and that's why). Really patient and cute.
Canli really cares about his students and genuinely wants everybody to get an A in the class. While lectures are not mandatory, they will help if statistics and research methods are not your strong suit. There are four exams and one is dropped. Very straight forward and similar to practice exams. Cumulative final & extra credit opportunities.
He wants his students to do well and most importantly to LEARN. He's straightforward about what he expects you to know for the exams and they're not bad as long as you study.... I recommend taking this class with him.
He is an amazing lecturer. I dont know if its because of the interesting material or because hes so knowledgeable, but i was genuinely upset when i missed his class. he doesnt take attendance but some slides dont have all the info for the test so its best to go and take at least minimal notes. read the assigned articles and look over the slides.
My only course in Stony Brook without an A. This professor has high self-esteem and can't bear any student skip his class. Not to say his class is totally a mess and waste of time. No recommend and glad I graduate. Worst psychology professor in SBU.
5 Quizzes, 4 required quizzes so the last one is optional if you're happy with all your test scores. No hw otherwise. Most preferable to show up to class so you can get more notes while he lectures through the ppt, but at the least show up to the classes right before the quizzes because it's a review session. Ta does review sessions too tho.
Very smart man, dense class but help is offered if needed. review sessions help A LOT. Best 4 out of 5 non-cumulative quizzes, each 40 points (multiple-choice) plus 4 points extra-credit (short essay). Each quiz will consist of a combination of multiple-choice and short essay questions. take good notes, record lecture. did better than i thought.
great professor. super passionate and extremely helpful. his tests are to the point and if you understand the slides, you will do fine on the exams. only 1 or 2 questions rely on lecture/class specific content. he covers an array of interesting topics such as specific animal behaviors, gene patterns, etc.
Dr. Canli is probably one of the best and most interesting professors I've had as an undergraduate student. He uses lecture slides during class, and then posts the slides online so you can view them if you happen to miss a class. However, I never wanted to skip a class because he was an amazing and engaging lecturer.
The only psychology class in which I got an A for and I'm a psych Major. super easy, just study well for the review sheet he give the day before the quiz and you will be good. 5 quizzes, drop the lowest one, final is optional if you are are satisfy with your previous 4 quizzes' score. attendance not required but class is fun tho.
Professor Canli is a brilliant man. He has a great history here at SBU and really is passionate in his work. He is understanding if you put forth the effort and understands that there are challenges outside of the classroom. 5 40 question tests only 4 are required. Great lectures I was disappointed if I missed any. Would absolutely take him again.
Professor Canli gives amazing lectures, this was my favorite class (and it was in the morning). He gives 5 Tests (easy tests if you study hard and take good notes), drops the lowest one (including the final). I recommend him, his lectures are interesting you will never be sleepy in that class :)
such a great professor, I have him this semester. the tests are pretty fair and hes clear with whats expected. I would totally take him again, hes so knowledgeable and passionate about the topic which I like and find helpful!
A brilliant professor and a really caring and helpful human. Hes there to help his students in any possible way he can. No homework but must attend lectures and memorize the graphs. Readings that he posts are helpful too. Best class and best professor at SBU
He was very fair in making all of the exams open book. He gives 5 but only counts your best 4. The readings are hard to understand since its all research. However he does explain the most important ones in his lectures. All of the lectures were recorded & asynchronous. Taking notes took forever. 1 hour lecture would easily become 2 hours.
Professor Canli is an amazing professor. There are a lot of readings. 5 quizzes. 40 questions. he drop lowest one . The final is essay questions. Blue book format. His quizzes questions are hard. If you don't read his 20 pages of reading, u wont pass it
Excellent great class to get an A.
He is highly professional, explains concepts clearly, and is dedicated to ensuring everyone succeeds.
Dr. Canli's lectures were fantastic! There is quite a bit of reading, and the material is not easy, but his class is definitely worth taking, especially if you are interested in entering the field of neuropsychology; he can offer a lot of insight.
Great Professor! Pr. Candi's PSY 358 class wasn't all that difficult for but i do have a background in biology. He is very passionate in his research and some of the cases we studied were secases that I have never even heard of before. I thought it was a very unique class. Highly recommend if you like intro genetics and research.
