Great teacher; loved the class. He knows a lot about his subject and goes into detail. He will try to get the entire class to understand but you also must be some what willing to do some work. He will make time for you to understand the subject outside of class. Overall, good teacher and would highly recommend
Fun class! He makes it fun, but that does not mean you can slack! if you start slackin' you are totally failing. Focus from day one and you will be fine!! Ty is a good teacher!!
He is MOODY, and he'll explain it once. If you don't get it, he'll give you the evil eye. It's an easy class and I understand but he is a SCARY teacher don't take him.
Ty is a great teacher he is very passionate about philosophy and life. His classes are very funand interesting, he likes to be personal and professional which invites for an awesome class and an excellent environment to learn in.
Nice guy but be prepared to hear about his atheist beliefs. Seems to be angry at God. I didn't enjoy the material. Lots of memorization. I felt like I was wasting my time.
avoid Ty like the plague
This is a great teacher. Really funny and willing to work with you if you are willing to work with him. He is understanding and cares about his students and will help you as much as he can to make sure you pass. Likes to talk about his personal life but doesn't distract too much from what you are learning.
He's average. You have to get along with him and his point of view. The class was all right but nothing special. If you have the chance take another instructor. For some reasons he's a very pessimistic person. Guess he has some personal issues... Feel sorry for him!
I will never take Ty again. Unless you want to work ridiculously hard and get no real benefit after take something else, he is an ok guy but likes to talk down on people he feels are not as intelligent as him (that would be everyone)
Ty is a very good teacher, he definitely knows he subject. It's not a very easy class but if you put in some effort he is willing to help. He actually goes out of his way to help students.
Ty was an excellent teacher and always willing to help! The class requires studying, but not an impossible amount. If you get a chance, take this teacher! I will definitely be taking him again!
best teacher ever! So mush fun!
very good teacher...... highly recommended...!!!!
I never study that hard for a class before, 2-3hrs everyday for his class, but end up got a 2.7 heart broken
I think it's funny that the two negative comments below refer to Phil 101 and Phil 212. Ty doesn't teach either of those classes! It's no wonder those students gave Ty a bad rating, they don't even know what class they're in!!
At first I really wasn't sure about the whole college thing, but this guy set it in stone in my mind. In day to day life I still use things we learned. Not like, SERIOUSLY, but my mind will reference it, and that just makes life so much more fun. He also treats his students with respect, and really seemsto enjoy what he's teaching. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Awesome teacher. Engaged students as equals, and would always know when he needed to slow down for some of the deeper discussions. He makes the readings clear and knows alot of very interesting facts about the philosophers that really helped me get through the text.
Really helpful and patient to all students, especially those who have trouble understanding the topic. He also makes sure everyone understands before the class moves on and keeps an upbeat environment. Ty is also extremely enthusiastic and makes sure that everyone participates.
this is my alltime favorite teacher. very funny, and explains things thoroughly. Do yourself a favor and sign up for any of his classes. Ask him to do the cartwheel with coffee
extremly thoughtful and fun teacher
It has been only my first quarter here at GRCC, but i can tell that Ty is awesome! 100% CLEAR! 100% HELPFUL! 100% FUN! then again, if you do not have the initiative to participate or meet him in his office to discuss your work, it won't really help. But im telling you. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!

I am now a freshman at CWU, and I can safely say that Ty is the best teacher I have had in my entire educational career. He is passionate about his field and passes this enthusiasm on to his students. I found logic to be fascinating; Ty made me look forward to each day of class. He willingly makes personal connections and has become a great friend.
FUN TEACHER!!! I learned so much from his class. If you're thinking about taking a philosophy class at GRCC, then take a class with Ty Barnes!!!
Ty is the most uncaring professor I have ever encountered
Ty inspires me to be a more educated and thoughtful human being. His brilliance can be misinterpreted as being unkind, or uncaring, when really he is just exerting his thoughts forward in a manner that is so precise, it can blow your mind away.
grade teacher. very funny.
He's a really smart guy who will teach you a lot. The class is pretty relaxed. Only problem is that he loves to talk about himself. I don't care what you had for dinner last night. But once you get the small talk out of the way, its a great class. The tests are hard. Its more about following the format than anything, because the material is easy.
Ty is an amazing teacher. He really knows how to connect with his students. He's fun, enthusiastic, exciting and inspiring. You have to study hard and be willing to question your beliefs to get everything out of the class you can. Pay attention, participate and do the homework and you'll get a 4.0. Best teacher I have ever known. Take him!!
Take Ty! He is the most incredible teacher I've ever known. I loved every minute of his class. He's absolutely brilliant and fun. Be prepared to work hard, but it's worth it. Don't be scared to go to him after class for more discussions or help.
totally not for internationals, drop it (or dont take him) if you are, unless you are able to write, listen and speak english as a native; even you wrote a perfect essay in the exam, you are not gonna get a good grade if the grammar was not good enough
I was an international student in his class. One time,I aksed him a question for the homework. And he suggested me dropped his class(but I didn't)Then I also gave him to check my essay question. And he said"I couldn't understand what I wrote,it was not english. Then,I dropped this class because I did't want to be insulted anymore by his words.
I'm an international student in his class. He is simply just awesome! Of course, he expects highly for english if you are gonna take his class. He said it at the beginning of the quarter. Got a 4.0 in his class only coz i worked by butts off. Anyways, other than being an intelligible, and helpful teacher, he is also friendly. He even invited me to
Definitely a Philosopher. Hard to get a straight answer to questions - ever. I picked up some interesting ways to think so far but I Ty enjoys philosophy more than teaching. He tries to connect and does with some students but not all... comes across pompous sometimes and other times I think he may actually enjoy being there.
Cool teacher, really made the class fun. Didn't really assign homework, but it would be best to make it a habit of studying the material outside of class on your own time anyways because the tests he gives are pretty hard.
Good prof
You may think this is a hard class, but Ty gives you every opportunity to get a good grade. Take advantage of his office hours to go over your rough drafts. He also allows you to rewrite your lowest scoring essay in the exams to improve your score. His philosophical bias is apparent in his teaching, and he's very specific in the answers he wants.
I did not understand the coursework, so he referred me to a tutor - who was also stumped by the coursework. He offered no further help, and sent me a scoff and haughty response when I asked how the coursework could be applied to any career... This guy was pretty lame as a TEACHER. He lets the book do that, and scolds any misunderstanding...
Ty is awesome! He is so funny and personable. I loved his grading method because it was straight forward and clear. There were no gray areas. He truly is a great teacher. He still acts like he's a college student :-) I got a 4.0!
Amazing professor! His class is hard; if your a slacker or don't come to class he is not the teacher for you. Lectures are always fun and interesting. If you need help, he always works with you until you really understand the material. One of the best courses I have taken.
International student don't take his class! You'll end up just dropping. He is kinda prejudiced towards intl students. Brought up grammar etc during the first weeks of the class untill all intl students are gone. Hello, it's philosophy class not english! He also has a teacher's pet, whom action he tolerates all the time & it is extremely annoying
Im an international student and I got a 4.0. It was a super tough class but if you work hard, you will not only ace the class but also improve your writing skill. I was very impressed about what I achieved. It's rough, frustrated, however, no pain no gain. My classmates helped me a lot so i would recommend a study buddy. Thank you so much, Ty <3
I am an international students and I think if u want to take his class, you need a very good English skill. He include your English skill in judging your score. He gave a lot of essay assignments about the materials but it was kinda helpful for you in studying. You have to be very diligent to have a good score in his class
One of my favorite teachers of all time. His classes are genuinely FUN, but they are incredibly tough. You have to be very particular with your wording, but if you try hard enough this class will be a breeze!
If there's any way to describe Ty, it would be that he's educated to the point where it has bloated his ego. Often talks about himself and flat-out scorns attempts to contribute to the classroom at times. Really seems to pick favorites from the start - and sticks by them. In the end, what are you honestly going to do with a degree in Philosophy?
I am taking Intro to Logic - Ty makes it really easy to understand. We only use the book for homework assignments, but you do need it every day. The course work is very difficult to understand, but it's really enjoyable once you get the hang of it! He also looks, and somewhat acts, like Will Ferrell!
His Introduction to Logic is my favorite class I've taken. Ty is super nice and a great teacher. Logic isn't too easy but if you follow along and focus, a 4.0 is absolutely achievable in his class!
Best teacher ever.
TY BARNES IS NOT A GREAT TEACHER .
This course is incredibly hard. If anything on your exam is not as specific or as particular as he would like (basically it needs to be perfect), many points will be deducted. Ty is obvioulsy well educated, and is very aware of it so he tends to act superior among his students. He is also very critical. I would NOT recommed taking this course!!!
He has very bad mouth. His class is super hard. He wants you to memorize the book word by word. If you want to hear from me plz don't take his class.
He is very passionate about philosophy and clearly enjoys what he does. I've taken several philosophy classes before and Ty's was by far the best of them all. His passion for the subject really makes the class interesting and he explains the topics very well. He is also always available during his office hours for help and is very helpful when used
Ty is a cool dude. He has a sense of humor and is interesting to listen to. His tests are hard. After finishing this class I'm never going to see things the same way I did before. Really interesting class.
Don't take his class if you expect to be easy. He takes everything word to word and the tests are ridiculous since he judges it by what he feels like.
Ty was wonderful. Philosophy is not something I am interested but Ty made it fun. He was very, very helpful. He would always meet with me at after hours and would help me with things I didn't understand. He is also really great at taking assignments before they are due and looking them over and correcting what is wrong so you get a good grade.
Ty Barnes struggles with not bragging about himself long enough to teach a class period. I learned more about his musical taste, schools he no longer teaches at, and his wild college days than I ever did symbolic logic.
Ty is one of the best teachers I have had at green river. He is extremely smart and a true philosopher. The class is easy if you read the assigned text and study and prepare well for the tests. He clearly states what he wants from you and that is greatly appreciated.
Great teacher, very helpful when you need it. Tough grader. Very open in class and almost becomes a friend while staying the instructor. Great in class vibe from him, would take another class with him no doubt
Ty is my favorite teacher! I really enjoyed his class and will be taking another class with him. If you take good notes, print out the handouts, and pay attention you can get a good grade.
His class was a bit hard and confusing, lectures were exactly the same thing as the book itself, coming to class didn't even matter. He is a funny, wild yet smart teacher but his grading criteria was the hardest I've encountered so far
Ty is a super funny, casual teacher. He is a difficult grader but gives you all the answers and instructions that he expects the best from you. He lets you write your test essays before-hand and reads them so that you get an A. As long as you show up to class, participate and ask questions, Philosophy of Science is a very easy class.
Poor feedback when given back assignments. Takes approximate two to three weeks to hand back grades. Wouldn't reply back to E-mail and you wouldn't know where you're at in the grading system. I would never take a class with Ty Barnes again.
Takes upwards of 3-4 weeks to respond to e-mails about assignments (long after they are due), won't use any grading website (canvas, angel, etc) to post grades, so you are completely blind to how you are doing the entire time - (Tells you to email him for grades, doesn't respond for weeks). Worst class I have ever taken, absolute joke.
After 4 weeks in his course, our class was assigned about 1600 problems. Given one week to do these problems, no notice that there were 1600 this week instead of the usual 50 or so, and no instruction (as usual) on the material, I ended up spending over 16 hours in two days, and still did not finish. No response to emails. Needs to go. DO NOT TAKE!
People say Ty is fun because he does cartwheels in class and talks about his personal matters. He told the class about a girlfriend who cheated on him and about others schools he had worked at. Very unprofessional and egocentric! The first day of class he warned: consider a different class if you don't have excellent English skills .
A teacher and human being. He likes who he is- self confident. Those lacking in their identity are thrown and would call him egocentric. Being proud of who you are is to have focused on personal development. It is NOT egotistical. Great things dont come easy. The knowledge you gain protects you from corruptions. If you lazy dont go to college.
Ty is funny and a great lecturer, but sometimes his sarcasm comes off a bit rude if you try challenging him. He knows his stuff and this class was really interesting. The tests are basically a bunch of memorization. Definitely record his lectures so you can go back and listen to all of the details for tests and homework, you will be glad you did!
Ty is a great professor. His lectures are very entertaining and he is funny. The class isn't very easy, you have to read the textbook and ask questions. However he is very sweet and is there for you if you need him. I would take him again.
He makes me hate philosophy. If you can avoid taking this course with him as your professor, I'd highly recommend it. He may be a philosopher, but he teaches this course as if it were a level 400.
Ty was one of the best professors I have ever had. He puts a lot of effort into helping all of the students and wants everyone be successful. He can explain complicated concepts in ways that make it easy to understand. He is a great teacher that clearly loves his job which made me look forward to his class. All you have to do is try hard and listen
I attended all but two days and repeatedly approached him during office hours for further assistance. By midterm, several people dropped the class. He encouraged me to remain in the class but ultimately gave me an F. He also returned one of my papers with degrading and insulting remarks despite the fact I tried my best.
Very hard grader, but makes everything really clear. Gives extra credit and let's you rewrite first paper and lowest scoring essay on first test. Record the lectures, that could save your life. Very helpful, checks rough drafts.
He is the WORST teacher I ever known in my life. He require all the newest textbooks, $150 or more. He replied my emails with scorn and insult, but never answer my question. Sometime, he give me wrong instruction to make me loose point. And he refused to provide any extra homework help. I don't know why he can even be a teacher??? He is WORST!!!!!
One of the more fun teachers I've had. Introduces frustrating thoughts for the sake of learning. If you can't work hard then don't take the class. Life is tough, and so is he, but at least he literally hands you what you need to have to pass his class. Life doesn't do that. Buck up and go to class.
A kind of funny but best on what he wants to deliver to the students. He wants more work from the student but is ready to help whenever you want.
Ty is welcoming and very interesting to listen to. If you give your opinion he is very quick to take note of it and give feedback. If you are disruptive or try to compromise his lectures he will be patience but will not tolerate it. He appreciates a good work environment for his students and will help you if you ask.
Whoever says this class is hard, are the ones who are not even capable of doing college-level writing. He basically gave you the same test as the study guide and you got to choose to write on whichever you want. He is super hilarious because he is a philosopher who is smart and maybe a little bit arrogant.
Mr. Barnes knowes his stuff. He is really smart, but not at all cocky about it. Philosophy has never been more undestandable. This class was so worth it.
He is a mean man.
Ty is the greatest philosophy instructor I have taken. He is really laid-back and connects with students with ease. His lectures are both entertaining and informative. His papers can be graded a bit on the tough side but he is clear with his grading criteria, and gives you time to prepare for these papers. Ty is a wonderful teacher and person!
He's awesome :p If you are planning on taking Phil 120, take Ty. Seriously. He makes everything so understandable and always explains the concepts in layman's terms firstly. Don't hesitate to ask him anything, he does want you to succeed in class. Plus, he's super hilarious and straightforward. He was my last minute switch and tbh, no regrets.
He is one of a kind when it comes to his personality and how he represents himself in the classroom. He is a funny guy and very interesting! Highly recommend taking a philosophy class with Ty.
Ty is hilarious and all around awesome guy, I enjoyed his class not because of the material at all, mostly cuz ty made the class awesome and fun and upbeat so goig to class was not hard. This material is not easy but ty really takes time and explains things well. Awesome professor HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
I'm not sure if he's just rude, unreachable, unworkable, and insulting in his online presence, but it seems students who attend his class say otherwise. In online he seems to have everything preset and gets frustrated if he has to do anything else. He makes you feel stupid, he's blatantly rude and does not seem to care about your success at all.
He is great at explaining things thoroughly. I was never confused in his class. He can be a little tough at grading, but he gives you everything you'll need to get an A, and goes over it with the whole class multiple times. He is sarcastic and funny, and very smart. If you are religious you might not enjoy his classes though.
He's pretty funny and likes to keep his lectures entertaining. If you want extra help outside of class, his availability is very easy to work with. There is a fair amount of extra credit you can receive, and homework is manageable. However, he is a very tough grader and is super picky about the way you write.
Ty gives conversational lectures and there's a lot of reading done in class. Little amounts of homework but tests carry a lot of weight. A hard grader and very particular with his grading; must have near perfect English skills to pass. Many chances for extra credit. Do NOT recommend for people who are not willing to question religious beliefs.
He is a tough grader, but if you have a problem with your grade, meet with him and he'll talk to you. It is hard material, but if you can grasp the concept, you should be okay. There is little reading required. If you're religious, be cautious and ready to defend your faith. It's important to know that you HAVE to be proficient in English.
He is the worst teach I have ever had in my life! He curses and yells at the students! Even if you go to all your class and do all your work he won't pass you! He's not a nice guy! And in my opinion he should not be a teach! Don't take ant of his classes!
Take this class. Highly recommend if you want to ruin your GPA.
Average teacher. Lectures were long and boring. Acts like he's a genius but teaches at a community college. Uses outdated, straw-man arguments against religion. Some good topics were covered but most were old stuff. I've had better philosophy teachers. Look elsewhere.
Hated this class. Very nitpicky and will dock down several points if you phrase things the way he doesn't like, even if it is correct. Boring lectures and he is super bias and full of himself. He does give a lot of extra credit opportunities but it won't matter because you'll get a bad grade anyway. Stay away from this professor.
Ty is the funniest and the most sarcastic teacher I've ever had. Although the class was lecture heavy, he makes the lecture as entertaining as possible. His critical thinking is a very easy class as long as you go to class, listen to his lecture, and do the homework. He gives you the test questions before the test and all you need to do is memorize
Ty is every TV stereotype of a philosophy teacher shoved into one walking cliche. Praise him and you will get better grades, get him talking about himself and he won't stop. I'm sure Ty is a brilliant professor to have when taking a highlevel Phil class, he is passionate about what he does. However, for a 101 class, stay away from this professor.
No indication of what was expected on the midterm and final (60% of total grade) and homework was often tedious. Seemed like a nice enough teacher at first, but didn't set clear expectations for tests and didn't tell you what you did wrong. Asked what would be on the final, he said things from chapters 6, 7, 8. We covered chapters 1, 6, 7, and 8.
I took him for ethics and was really nervous going into the class from what I had heard. I got a 4.0 by recording lectures and frequently listening to them, tests are literally word for word so memorize tech terms exactly. Overall it was a little difficult of a class but as long as you show up and ask for help you're golden.
Had him for philo 101 and I have never had a harder intro level class. He teaches it well if you talk to him everyday but other than that you basically have to learn it yourself which is incredibly hard. Pretty bad at responding in a timely matter too.
Teacher does not replied to any of my emails. When I went to his office hours he wouldnt be helpful. Take this class if your memorization skills are high. Exam constitutes of memorizing serveral term word by word.
He does blue book tests. If you write down exactly what he says about the topic in class, you're golden. Just practice memorization. If you're looking to actually learn philosophy though and want more than the grade, actually pay attention. He's an intelligent, passionate, and very very funny dude. Definitely a class worth taking, albeit a hard one
If you believe in God be careful.. He constantly reminds you that he thinks religion is ridiculous. You also need to make sure you write things down exactly how he says word for word. If you don't he will mark it wrong.
my advise is : Just avoid his classes. You will thank me later
Hes a very fair professor and you always know what youre expected to get done. Tys lectures were always on-topic, he was funny, quick-witted, and he always had no problem helping students when they didnt understand. His intro to ethics class had only 3 homework assignments and 3 exams. Hes a very tough grader, you really have to work for an A.
There are no materials for this class except for the textbook. No lectures, no powerpoints, and no real feedback from Ty on assignments. You are teaching yourself without any help. 4 written assignments with 2 tests. All focused off your understanding of the textbook, but, graded off Ty's understanding. Class mean was 2.7 out of 10 on each paper.
His grading is tough but fair. The thing that seems to bother people is that he will take everything you say literally and is quick to find a problem with the way you said it. Best advice is to study arguments like they are play lines, not focus on originality, and take him up on his office hours.
4 writing assignments, a midterm and a final. Takes a long time to grade + kind of a picky grader, doesn't reply to emails + inaccurate canvas dates. However, content of the class is interesting and writing/thinking about it was enjoyable to me. Hard to get a hold of him, but when I met him I thought he was very wonderful/understanding.
I really enjoyed Ty's class. It was a difficult class, but he was very fair and made sure everyone understood. Highly recommend.
Ty is a very good teacher in the sense that he cares about his students and the subject that he teaches. He is very passionate and very hilarious. Yes, he is a tough grader but he will give leeway on the grades if the entire class fails a test. I would take his class again if I was interested more in the field.
Highly picky with your wording, makes fun of students who don't get the right answer right away to his lecture questions even if they are only slightly off. The entire subject falls apart when you think outside the bounds he limits you to with the stories for his assignments.
I love school and learning, and I was really excited about this class but it quickly turned to dread when I realized what type of teacher he was. He grades on grammar and word choice rather than if you actually understand the topic. The first impression will determine whether you pass or fail the class and if he helps you out or not. Not good.
lots of people complaining about his nitpicking for writing but i believe he has made me a better writer because of it! this is a college class after all lol. this class was so interesting and he made it fun to learn the subject! i would jump at the chance to take him again! also definitely take him up on office hours if you're struggling! 10/10
Beware he is a bad professor. Other teachers avoid him too. Stay away from this class.
I am taking this class during the Corona Pandemic, so I understand that not every class is going to be great right now. However, Ty has taken no effort to record a single lecture, even though this was supposed to be a physical attendance class. The only "teaching" is from myself at this point. Extremely lazy and doesn't offer constructive feedback.
He takes forever to grade assignments, and when he does he gives barely any feedback on the assignments. There is one graded assignment each week but if it is not perfect, he will give you a terrible grade and leave barely any explanation for it. If possible try for a different philosophy teacher.
He will include papers in an assignment that have absolutely nothing to do with the assignment but he won't tell you that. Use them in your assignment and you'll fail, he does let you redo your assignment but the feedback he gives is most often "Um no try again" and absolutely nothing else. If your class isn't in person find a different teacher.
Ty IS a particular grader, but it is because the subject matter is easily confused/misstated by students. This is understandable the material is sometimes hard to comprehend. However, Professor Barnes makes himself available for office hours, and revisions are possible on most assignments. Success in the class is possible with hard work.
Lot's of explanation about what's expected. Follow instructions and you'll do well. Ask for help if you need it.
(summer 2020) I can honestly say that out of my 2 1/2 years at Green River not one other professor has been as accommodating and accessible as he has. I wasnt made to feel as if my questions were stupid. And he is always willing to set up a zoom call if you need help. Just an all-around great professor! Would take this class again if I could!!
STRICT GRADER! but I give him a poor rating mainly due to one incident revolving around the mid-term. I sent an email to him a bit late (having a bit of hope that he may see it), the next day I get an email back. The email was not professional whatsoever, and made me feel worthless and insulted.
I finished this class with a 71%. Normally I would be really hard on myself but this teacher has made it tremendously difficult to the point of losing all motivation. Highest grade I got on a paper was a 5/10. and the only response I got back repeatedly was read it again. Dont take this class because it is NOT worth your time and effort.
While he is compassionate during the pandemic, he is not a well-rounded professor. He is very unclear in what he is looking for in assignments and whenever you submit a rewrite, he does not give any feedback. While he is accessible during his office hours, it feels like he isn't guiding his students well enough. Take another class for your sake.
Pros: You can redo any assignment as many times as you like; he'll give you the answers to the assignments if you see him during his office hours, and because of his particularity in grading in addition to his vague expectations for the assignments, chances are (if you're willing to push yourself) you'll greatly improve as an analytical writer.
Best class Ive had at GRC! Professor is super helpful! See him if you need help.
Professor Barnes was a great teacher in my experience. He gave excellent feed back and really showed me what I was doing wrong so I could get a better grade. He was very accessible and always gave a response within a day. This class had a lot of reading and he always gave us notices on what to look for in the reading.
I have never rated a professor before until now, he is a very tough grader and gave me a 1/10 on the very first writing assignment which will be the only assignment you get every week. His feedback to the writings didn't make sense and were vague, continuously would say "read the material again". Doesn't reply to emails.... just avoid his class.
Take this class! Prof lets you re-do anything you didn't get right first time. Impsible not to get an A! Friendly and helpful!
I took his online course for Fall 2021 and it was horrible. He doesn't know how to teach an online class, we barely used the textbook he told us to buy, and he doesn't reveal your final grade until the end of the quarter. Don't take the class, your GPA will thank you.
Do not take this guy, In syllabus said rough drafts are to be submitted at least 2 days before due date, he replied slow and said rough drafts are long past. Did not join zoom drop-in meetings and got me waiting for 1 hour. Only thing good is you can redo your assignments and tests as many times as you want. Other than that, don't take this guy.
Considering this was an entry course into PHIL - I spent more time on the PHIL online hmwk than I did with my OCHEM class. You can redo certain assignments to get a better grade. He allowed us to retake the midterm if we we were not okay with our grade. He gives you a week to submit Midterm and Final.
He is an extremely tough grader, he forces you to get the right answer even if it is hard to reach those answers. The reading is already tough as it is and his writing prompts are very broad and don't give you a strong understanding what he is looking for. Hardest class I ever took especially for a 101 class.
Having studied under all the philosophy professors at GRC, by far Mr. Barnes is the worst. Your success or failure in his class will depend less on your understanding of ethical concepts and arguments and more on your ability to precisely jump through his many obtuse criteria for his inane Present, Explain, and Evaluate "essay" format. Avoid him.
He's kind and will accommodate your schedule to meet, he will work with you on projects. Yet he is extremely unclear on what he wants out of an assignment, he will pretty much only be clear on what he is looking for after you've written a 5-7 page essay and get a terrible grade on it- with no explanation- until you meet with him virtually.
I really don't know what those negative reviews are about. Ty took all kind of time to help me. He's available during drop in zoom office hours and he's willing to meet any time if you can't go to his office, even on weekends! Plus he lets you redo everything after he gives good, clear feedback. Take this class!
Do not email Ty for help. He is wonderful via zoom and such but emailing about such concepts as PHIL isn't really a thing. He can come off as mean, but he's super nice and understanding. You will pass this class if you meet with him frequently and have accountability for your understanding of the content. If you expect an easy class, drop this one.
Strong expectations but also supportive and helpful. Available during office hours. (no email experience) Gives extensions/retakes. If you haven't taken a university style class before expect a rough start. Will need to go back and reread old sections regularly. Expect more than 15 hours a week of study. Not a class to be lazy in.
Great intro to ethics course, he is very clear with his expectations and when followed, the class is very easy. He is very picky with wording and harsh, but multiple drafts are allowed. He takes his time to go through your work and make sure you really understand the material. He is helpful, do not let reviews scare you away from a great teacher.
I am taking Barnes right now. So far: pros- unlimited resubmissions for papers, not a lot of assignments, and *SUPER* HELPFUL during drop-in office hours -he will guide you well. Cons- kind of disorganized with materials, confusing labels on docs (so make sure you ask questions). The first exam was easy (3 tries/unlimited time).
Took this class as an RS student and really enjoyed it! His assignments can be confusing at first -this is why U SHOULD GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He is SO HELPFUL during office hours and will literally give you DIRECT feedback on your assignments. No extra credit but UNLIMITED rewrites for anything. He is also VERY flexible with you and very gracious.
He was easily accessible through office hours and email. This class is made up of 6 short writing assignments (WAs) & 3 Exams (easy multiple-choice sections & writing portions that are very similar to the WAs). For religious students, WA #1 would be hard to do. I chose not to do that one -luckily it did not affect my grade much.
Hes a good professor in that he provides good outlines for assignments, grades well, and is accessible. His lectures however are mostly just him talking about his opinions and stuff like that. good prof, but be ready to read and prepare to listen to a lotttt of talking thats not very relevant
Ty is an awful professor. What does the feedback "no." mean on an essay? Or how do the words "do you even use your brain" help you in anyway? Well you can ask Ty that if you make the bad decision to take his class, because that's the type of stuff he writes on not only my essays but the essays of everyone I have talked to.
Do not take Ty's class!! He belittles and degrades his students. Some of these reveiws seem so fake I wouldn't be supprised if he worte them himself.
Before taking this class I read these reviews and thought I could make it through this professors class, but I could not have been more wrong. This is the hardest class I have ever taken, not just because of the harsh grading but because of the awful professor. He is rude and inconsistent. He teaches you nothing and thinks he owns the world.
Ty himself was okay, just very apart from his online PHIL120 class. He'll make you purchase a course on Mindtap/Cengage. Its about 150$ and everything on there is worth 40% of your grade. If you don't get the homework done, you're screwed. you do poorly on the only two tests, you're screwed. It's like calculus and the devil had a baby.
Save yourself, Harder than online preCal your first time using WAMAP. You will be buying Cengage for $~150, 40% of your grade is on this 3rd party website graded automatically by this 3rd party. 1 midterm worth 30% of your grade,1 final worth 30% of your grade, had tech issues with Cengage. Only prof made& graded are mid& final.1/10Class, 6/10prof.
Frustrating grader due to the fact that he is very picky with his Present, Explain, and Evaluate essays (the only 6 required assignments). Expect not to get a perfect grade on your first try. His class made me a shy away from moral philosophy because he showed me how picky people are with regards to ethical points of view.
This class was solid and entirely online. The class uses Cengage, where all of the homework and assignments are. It cost around $120. There's a midterm and final. Grading is also pretty fair but there are a lot of assignments a week. Make sure to communicate with him, he's flexible, but he will not be as active unless you reach out to him.
Professor is a very hard grader, and even though you can do assignments multiple times it is still hard to get it right. He does not explain things very well and is pretty rude to his students. It's basically impossible to pass his class. I have genuinely never taken a harder class in my life and will never be taking his class again!
A lot of people say this class is hard and he DOES grade tough but it's because he cares about his class. There are only 3 required assignments and if you meet with him (he's available twice a week for everyone and you can schedule an appointment) he will HELP and tell you if you did it right and give you active feedback! Just talk to him :)
Worst professor I've ever had. There is only 4 writing assignments but its close to impossible to get a good grade on them no matter how many times you resubmit, he wants you to write like a textbook. He's rude and provides very vague feedback for instance "read the instructions again". Not worth your time or effort DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
While the outline for assignments seem relatively easy, beware of the extr
Grades on his feelings not on content. Is horrible towards his students. If you ask for help it's clearly seen as an inconvenience to him. Clearly does not enjoy teaching. Has you read the book but doesn't help you understand the complex ideas presented. No lectures. Slow grading. Does tell you your grade. Avoid at all costs!
Professor Ty's class can be challenging, but he's genuinely invested in helping students succeed. The lectures are dense, but engaging with the free textbook and using tools like unstuck AI for study prep made all the difference. Overall, a rewarding experience.
Assignments and exams take a while to get graded. For one assignment, he forgot to grade after the quarter ended. He gives good feedback in the Zoom sessions but there is no reason for a 101 class to be this difficult. I would never recommend this class or professor to anyone.
Ethics can bring about various opinions, but none should make students feel disrespected. Barnes implements an exuding amount of his personal opinions into assignment outlines. Student's personal, religious beliefs should not deter the scoring; and giving feedback a month after a due date is obtuse.
i have so much to say bro he said he was having a really good morning but i ruined his day after asking of i could email him my essays after he locked ALL 4 assignment a week before the quarter ended BUT i also had canvas issues so girl... im a baby how could u do that to me
His class structure isn't complicated but he refused to grade ALL my work for non proper formatting when I had other professors check my formatting they all said it was great, then he lied saying I can turn it in by the end of the semester and then when I did he said it was too late, i saw other reviews and thought i can do it, no AVOID THIS CLASS
Absolutely awful professor, graded way too hard for an intro class. Took a whole quarter to grade my rewrites, (Still haven't gotten them back), comments left on my writing were rude, and unprofessional, do not take this class!!!
I had Ty Barnes and he was terrible, he was rude and his grading was tough. When I reached out for help he never answered and his feedback is straight up which isint bad but he doesn't tell you how to fix it. He was the worst professor I've ever had
Very difficult class even though it's an intro class and a lot of large concepts that aren't deep dived into enough. There isn't a real guideline for grading and what is wanted an example for me was when I wrote and explained a topic a lot to the best of my ability and he said it wasn't good enough.
All you have to do is communicate with him about your assignments and he will help and guide you through them. He takes a while to grade and doesn't always give the most thorough feedback on online work, so it's critical that you meet with him on his office hours and talk through the work with him. When you do, he is very helpful and a great guy!
Refuses to accept fault, refuses to hear you out when you correct him, refuses to check *his* work. Graded me incredibly low on an exam, so I triple checked my work and found that all but one of my answers were correct. For a philosophy teacher he seems to have a poor grasp of the course material. Perhaps he should attend one of his own lessons.
Don't take his class. Seriously. He grades based off of semantics and technicalities, and when you correct him on it, he grows aggressive and belligerent. He believes he is infallible and that any challenge is an affront. My assignments were graded improperly, and when I tried to express that he exploded on me, vulgar and all. Unsupportive teacher.
The worst professor the school has to offer, doesn't communicate, and grades extremely late with no opportunity of knowing what you did wrong, i have never failed a class in my entire life, but failed 2 of his classes, horrible teacher don't recommend
Even though it's a philosophy class, only his point of view is right. His office hours are 10-11 am Monday Wednesday which is when most students have other classes. Barely responds to emails. Your grade is based on 3 tests, that are all graded after the final due date, making the rewrites useless. He fails you for small errors. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Even though it's a philosophy class, only his point of view is right. His office hours are Monday, Wednesday 10-11 am, when most have other classes. He doesn't respond to emails or does after days. Your grade is based on three tests, which are all graded after the final due date, making rewrites useless. There is no clear rubric. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
First of all this class is super difficult, if you want a good grade expect to be working at least 4-6 hours a week, JUST TO GET A GOOD GRADE, if you want a great grade, don't have any expectations as this class is extremely hard, expect to go to his zoom meetings online WHICH ARE NO HELP. If you want unnecessary stress take this class.
Do you value your mental health or sanity? If so, for the love of god do NOT take this class. This professor has made me jump through hoops just to meet with him (mandatory) and to pass this class. He is extremely difficult to zoom call if you can't attend his drop-in hours, and he's passive-aggressive with his responses. Ruined my quarter.
Out of all my online Professors Professor Barnes was one of the best. While he didn't really teach the material himself he was easy to reach outside of class if you were confused. He is very lenient about due dates which was really helpful!! However, beware of the amount of work you will have to do so make sure to do it during the week don't wait.
Mr. Ty is a very kind and patient professor. His online class is clear, well-organized, and he explains material in a way that is easy to understand. He responds to questions thoughtfully and makes sure students feel supported. He encourages learning, gives helpful feedback, and creates a positive, comfortable, and engaging environment for everyone
If you want to be depressed take this class.
