He's not the best dresser, very nice guy, class is very easy. Just not that interesting.
He is very demanding. Very few points awarded throughout the semester; if you screw up, you don't have a big chance of getting back on track. Tests are unclear and are very specific. Don't expect a review. Tells jokes fit for children and has very strict policies. By midsemester, only two people had A's; the majority of the class was under or at C.
Does not lecture to the test. Lots of memorization skills necessary. Tests on minutia. Half of last class dropped. Of the half that was left, less than half passed!
Very boring! Map quizes every week, and if you miss spell you only get half credit! I droped it in time to be able to get a refund. I would NOT recomend taking this class with him.
Terrible class. I never passed any of the map quizzes, and there are few (if any) directions on how to do the application problems. Very unfair in grading. Never got anything higher than a 9 on map quizzes.
do not take his class. it is so hard and you have to memorize so much material. it was too much so i dropped about a month into the class. my friend worked her ass off and got a D! dont take him!!
DO not I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER. I studied for 2 hours a day and still got a D in this class i even spoke with the dean who said he will look into the problem. This teacher makes it way too hard for an intro course and needs to remember that most people are not geography majors.
His tests are horrible. Really unfair. Works hard as a teacher, but not very helpful or flexible in grading.
If you take this guy, you will regret it! Lectures have nothing to do with most of test. He does multiple choice on the book and picks nothing but trivial questions that you'd have to memorize the book to know the answers. You also will need to memorize the names AND SPELLINGS of most of the countries of the world for tests he gives. BEWARE!!!!
Map test were horrable. Wanted place names spelled correctly but misspelled them himself.
This class was horrible. Do not take it as others have said. Has weird tendencies, like wearing a glove when using the chalk board. That was the best part of class.
Do not take him, unless you want to fail...
He was a difficult teacher. Take good notes and study everything if you want to pass.
Be prepared to memorize like you were in 3rd grade, because the 1st four Fridays are map test days. Test is a map with 20 dots & you need to know country, city, water body or geo feature and 50% off if you spell wrong! Midterm exams are out of book & questions can be on most trivial things, so unless you memorize book, good luck. No curves either!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM! As others say, you will FAIL! 99% is pure memorization with hard tests and forces you to remember map locations and its features. I was lucky enough to withdraw from his class before the final.
I disliked this teacher very much. His lectures were horribly boring and monotonous and the content of the class was basically learning the labels "scholars" have place on aspects of society. The tests barely included material from lecture. The homework for the class was tedious. I do not recommend this teacher.
Sorry all these people must be really lazy I was able to get a B in the class and got a better than perfect score on my essay final. I took 2 of his classes, i could have gotten an A, but alas i was being semi lazy as well and i was taking 5 classes a semester, so I had a large work and study load, but i do not blame this on Ty Liles come on everyb
THIS TEACHER SUCKS! DONT TAKE HIM! he sucks and i tried REALLY REALLY hard in the class and i'm still struggleing for a D. I am an A/B student and this is obviously not right.
Just like everyone is saying, he is such a hard teacher. The people left in his class who have not dropped out have a C or lower. His lectures are so boring and they are so hard to pay attention to. His tests are impossible.. the notes you take in class barely help you. I would study at least an hour to 2 hours and I would get a C or lower on exams
He is the worst professor i have ever had. He is no help at all. He assigns labs every week and expects you to know what you are doing from his boring lectures. If you take his class be prepared to teach yourself and be bored out of your mind!!
bad teacher, lectures are irrelevant to the test,he refuses to answer questions already discussed in class, boring, tons of memorization, boring lectures,20 students to start class and only 8 stayed til the end,and probably only 4 passed. it WILL ruin your GPA if u take this class with him, don't do it!
He is a nice techer. Each test is difficult does not go over everything in lecture. Does grade fairly on papers. Each chapter has a lot of information and can be difficult to remember no matter how hard you study.
Horrible, HORRIBLE TEACHER. I showed up everyday to the boring lectures, did ALL my work, he is very unorganized and has an attitude if you speak or ask him a question. His tests have nothing to do with the notes you take in class. My future is ruined because of this class, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT
don't do it I have had all kinds of professors before from strict to heavy accents and well even then I had good grades in them really think about it especially if this is your area of interest
Ty, is a little child trapped in a man's body. His class lectures were sometimes irrelevant to the test and his labs were often difficult. However, he is the typ of teacher who admires those who give effort. Many had D's including myself but because I showed the most effort in the class, he upped my grade from a D to a passing C. Dull, but fair..
Ty is not that bad of a teacher. Thje problem is that he does not change his teachin style to meet the STUDENTS needs. He gives too much material at one time, does not allow for enough time to learn the material. he does not give muchomework or much effort in helping you with your work. Over all, his teaching style sucks, so be careful.
Very knowledgeable, but a horrible teacher. 23 students started, 8 finishing, all have Ds but 1. You teach your self, lectures ireelevant to tests, jumps all over the book with no order. No syllabus. Stay away from this guy, he will ruin your grade point average. He expects you to beat his knowledge level, but doesn't teach you.
This guy does not fit the description of one who "teaches." Out of 19 students in our Geography class, only a few will pass... With Ds. The workload is unbearable. He doesn't actually "teach" anything; he expects you to figure each assignment out on your own without any instruction. He just sits there and twiddles his thumbs while you struggle. BAD
Ty is a very knowledgable teacher, however his class was the most difficult class i have taken thus far, and Geography is my strongest subject. I struggled to get a B in his class and I am an A student, out of 17 people, only 5 were left at the end of the semester. Very tough class. He is hard to reach, but will help a bit if you reach him before.
I thought he was a good teacher. I had a heavy work load and didn't have enough time to really focus on this class, as I received a C. If your lazy, don't read, or skip class you will find yourself lost. Test have simple question which become hard if you don't prepare well, and that's were I fell short. Funny, dresses nice, and loves soccer.
Mr. Liles is a sweet person. can't figure out why the school does not investigate why so many students drop or fail this class. His expectations are unreasonable and every week there was either a map quiz (which you only had a week to memorize)or the stupid tests that have absolutely nothing to do with what he went over. never had class so bad!
Why is he a teacher?! I attended everyday, took very good/clear notes, and did my homework. Did this pay off? Absolutely NOT! He assumes that everyone already has vast knowledge of the material, which I certainly didn't. He goes off on pointless tangents, makes irrelevant test questions, and when you have a question it just goes in circles.
Liles was a bad teacher, I wouldn't take a class with him again. If you get him as a teacher... drop the class.
Honestly did the best I could in the class. Took notes, read the chapters, did homework, and everything else. Tests are killer. Questions don't relate to material he goes over in class. Only 8 people remained out of the 20 that were in his class. Everyone with below a C. Withdrew before my GPA was affected.
Not quite as bad as everyoneis saying. It is true that many test questions did not really relate to material in class. He has some picky habits too like taking 20% off my essay because I didn't write in ink and I didn't double space. Spells some countries wrong but takes off if we spell them wrong. I got a B. Many got Cs and Ds.
350 characters is not enough to express my hatred of this class. nice guy but he could sure learn how to teach. gives a ton of busy work to do at home and gives no credit for it. the map quizes are ridiculous. the tests are too. and don't get me started on the chicagoland "so called" shorty. nothing short about it. drop his class if you get him
One of the hardest teachers i have had in my 3 years of college. Test are irrelevant to the subject, like the map quiz at the begging of the term. they are not relevant to the rest of the term and questions in the test were never spoken by him nor read in the book. avoid having him at all cost!!
This class is horrible im currently in it an his tests are the hardest ever. everything you learn in class is not very useful when it comes to the tests. its like he ecpects everyone to understand alllllllll the material. hes really bad at teaching.
This professor treats his students as if they were in elementary school; it is insulting and infuriating. I understand that he used to be an elementary teacher but it is not helpful for anyone that he transfers that into a college classroom. Ugh.
Save yourself a lot of frustration. Assignments are vague, and tests are impossible. Its very difficult if you want an A.
I took this class in the spring of '12 and he was not a very good teacher. His homework assignments and tests were irrelevant to the class and he was very unclear on many of his handouts. He tries too hard to be funny and he treats his students like we don't have lives. Save yourself some time and drop while you can.
Bad teacher, confusing syllabus. Don't take this teacher, or be prepared for the worst. Quizzes to maps are useless but hard graded. Bad, very bad teacher. I don't recommend him.
Invites students to come by during office hours, but yells at them when they try to ask questions. Gives busywork and is extremely particular when it comes to taking notes. (which don't help whatsoever). No extra credit available. Do yourself a favor and run if you have to take his class.
Avoid this teacher at all costs! Extremely confusing and unclear about what will be on exams. Lectures have nothing to do with what's on the tests. This class with this professor will not benefit you in anyway! I regret taking this class so much, it ruined my GPA and was very frustrating as I tried studying very hard but still got only a C.
He's a nice guy if you get to talk to him outside of the classroom. He expects a lot of reading outside the class and the quizzes did feel a little "useless". He is incredibly knowledgeable, but I'm not sure of his technique in teaching.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is the absolute worst teacher I've ever had. His tests are impossible, and I would study like crazy. I would do the homework, study and take notes but he is such a harsh grader, I still got a D. This class lowered my GPA. I repeat: AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS.
Every class is worth a point if your late you lose the point for the day. Multiple choice is non-existent in this class on map quizzes. You never under stand anything this guy is saying it makes no sense. Avoid this guy if you want to keep your GPA up.
The class has too much material. His exams are hard when you don't review the mass amounts of information the week before. He does offer help, however before or after class seems to bother him (recommends his office). If you take the class, do it because you already have a light schedule cause it'll take up lots of time. He's nice but awkward.
The map quizzes aren't difficult if you study but he takes half credit if you misspell it. It was a difficult class overall because of the tests. Even though he does give guides to help with the test it is still necessary to have great memorization skills. It just seems like way too much information to memorize in such little time. Also the tests are difficult and a lot more in depth than the notes. I suggest not to only write what he puts on board but also write what he says.
Do not take his class. I had the worst experience. I don't have a problem with hard work. The material is very hard to follow. What we learn in class is never on the tests. He has no patience to help you. Most of my class received C's or below. I don't understand why a teacher with such poor results is still teaching. Do not take his courses.
This guy is absolutely awful. You can study all day and hang on his every word in the class room and still fail if you don't read the entire book and somehow have the ability to decipher his completely out-of-the-blue questions which he clearly came up with out of nowhere. Unless you know more than he does somehow you will not get a good grade.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS-Liles is an awful teacher. I did took notes, reviewed and answered the recommended questions many times, took every note in class, etc. and still do poorly on the test. His explanations of topics are poor and he goes on frequent useless diatribes that are irrelevant to the material. You'll learn more from watching Finding Nemo.
In summing up this professor, one word comes to mind... awful. Prepare for the most uncomfortable, frustrating and downright un-enjoyable semester of your college experience if you take a class with him. So in order to save yourself from that... DON'T!!!
This is the best teacher at CLC! I would recommend Professor Liles to anyone! :)
This is NOT an over exaggeration when I say this. Do not take this class. It will ruin your semester. He expects you to dedicate your life to this class. The map quizzes stink, he does not help you with them. It will not matter how much you study. The questions that you study are irrelevant on tests. Even if it "fits" in your schedule don't do it.
This teacher is horrible! Unless Geography is your favorite subject and you devote yourself completely to this class, it's not possible to pass. Hard map quizzes not learned in class, lectures are confusing and boring, he expects you to know everything about this class, he doesn't say what is expected on assignments. Do not take him!
This was honestly one of the worst and hardest classes i've ever been in. When he would give papers he would make a deadline and after that date you weren't allowed to ask him for help... oh yeah makes a lot of sense to not be able to ask your professor for help. Almost half of the class dropped and many of the ones who didn't ended up failing.
Taking his class right now and if I knew him before hand I know I wouldn't have chosen his class. He wants EVERYTHING perfect for map quizzes he wants the students hand writing to be "perfect" and readableclear to read (let me just say he DOES NOT have to best handwriting in the entire world)
not fun at all. Very boring, he makes it incredibly difficult to pay attention and enjoy the class. You would think oceanography would be cool, but the cannot explain anything well and it is very hard to follow his thoughts.
He is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire college career. Everyone has dropped and left the class because he does not know how to teach properly. His tests are impossible to pass and his quizzes are impossible to pass as well. He wants you to spell every word write and if you cant, you get points off for not spelling it write.
Just bad.
My class had a ton of LABS. The information was UNCLEAR, and I had to do most of the work ahead of time. I almost FELL ASLEEP during the lectures. The tests do not always reflect what you learned. Beware of MAP QUIZZES, they are hard and you will never use the knowledge in the class again. DO NOT TAKE! Say GOOD BYE TO YOUR GPA!
Get ready to read and listen to a lot of information that you won't see on the test. Terrible teacher and doesn't get the information across to anybody. You will notice half the class you start with are gone by the second week.
His expectations for an intro level class are insane. It's a very cool subject, but he bogs it down with pointless map quizzes and vague assignments.
Hardest thing to adjust to was that Blackboard isn't used at all. Even though the tests are hard, after I went to his office to talk to him about possibly dropping the class, he gave me good study tips and assured me that with enough work, the grade would work itself out.
By far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. His lectures don't prepare you for the tests and he expects you to know everything. His class makes me want to give up on school...
Unnecessary Map quizzes! Everything needs to be perfect! Way too much material for the type of the class. Not clear instructions.
Map quizzes You have to study and memorize 50 random locations then get quizzes on 10 Oh and thats only for one country you have to do two specific areas at the time. Exams were subjective. You would have to study outside of the class to even understand most of the questions. Grades incredibly hard and has odd ball assignments Poor teaching
How is this teacher not fired yet? Every review here says he is just awful yet he's still allowed to fail students and ruin their life I'm not longer able to transfer because of this teacher because I didn't spell correctly on his map quizzes along with even understand his tests you cannot prepare yourself for
Thinks it's funny to let someone take his class, then 2 weeks into the semester laugh at them for not studying or thinking that they don't know how to read a world map! This professor was extremely hard. Would not recommend him for any class. He will humiliate you in any way possible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
Thinks its funny for people to drop his class. Then get an email saying that he wants me to come back? FORGET IT!!! This professor was by far THE WORST professor I've had during my college career. Had to drop within the first 2 weeks of class. I like learning geography, but he made this class difficult, so I had to drop all because of this teacher!
He tries to help students in the best way possible, but when it comes to preparing for tests, he makes you look dumb. This was a very difficult class to grasp. I thought I would like it because of the subject, but when he teaches it, it becomes foreign. Never taking this professor again!!!
This teacher is by far one of the WORST TEACHERS I'VE HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!! He thinks he can try to help you get a good grade, but when it comes to the tests and quizzes, it becomes foreign to you and you end up failing, which ends up as you failing the class. SUPER POOR TEACHING!!! :(
Tough teacher to work with!
Had a lot of things handed to me, he yelled at me because I couldn't finish my test in time. Very childish and rude! Students should be able to take their time on the tests so that they can get the grade they want! very unprofessional. Never taking this professor again.
Midway through the semester and I'm already getting a low grade in this class!!! This teacher is the worst! DO NOT TAKE HIM HE WILL RUIN YOUR SEMESTER!!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!
Tests are based off of what is taught in class & in the readings. When reading the book, take notes & turn them in on Test day for extra credit. Do not buy an Atlas, all the info can be found online. Some assignments are unclear. Teacher is sometimes difficult to understand during lectures. Easy class if you put a little effort into it.
Very difficult teacher. Lots of reading and assignments that were time consuming that were just "for our review". Don't take him.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avoid him at all costs. I thought it would be easy, I was wrong. Map quizzes are strictly graded, half points awarded for misspelled names. I thought his lectures were okay, but the tests were pretty difficult. You have very little margin for error in terms of grading. I had to withdraw because there was no point in trying to finish.
I would avoid this teacher at all costs. He isn't easy, and assignment aren't so straight forward. The Oceanography class required you spend your own money to go to the Shed Aquarium. For the map quizzes, there is no word bank, so you better be good at memorizing words. He is the worst professor I have ever had at Clc
Doesn't even have your grade on Blackboard
He is not easily accessible, knows the info but does not know how to get it across to students. He isnt very helpful and doesnt care if his whole class fails. If possible avoid taking his class, he will ruin your gpa
This teacher must stop teaching at CLC. He hates extra credit, has a grumpy attitude, is unclear on homework assignments, which he rarely grades even though he says they are due, expects you to know every location in the world and memorize the book, etc. Do not take Liles; he will fail you by damaging your high GPA and making you suffer.
I would consider rating him higher, even though he's a awful teacher, if i thought he cared a little bit about his students. Instead of helping confused students, he repeats what he already said and is very condescending. The large workload wouldn't of been too bad if didn't have to learn everything out of the book. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
You have to go to the Shedd Aquarium for a mandatory assignment. I spent $70 that day. The fact that the assignment was required and not EC was super inconvenient and probably my biggest grievance with the course. It's a gamble whether or not any of the stuff covered in class will actually be on his tests. It's a no from me, dog
Well I liked Mr. Liles as a person, but he just didn't know how to help students. He knows what he is doing when it comes to the subject but he doesn't know how to get it across to students so we can learn it. He also never updates grades on blackboard ever and on tests/quizes, if you misspell even one word you get points knocked off. Not reliable.
I previously read his ratings but assumed "it cant be that bad" it in fact was that bad it was the first class I ever had to with draw from. Quizes are not logical makes you memorize over 50 places on a map but only quizzes on 20. Not alot graded from, 200 test points, 80 quiz points and 50 homework all semester.
Liles is very unclear regarding what content is important on the test. What I mean is, he doesnt make a clear distinction or good description of the main ideas/objectives in class. I was confused during his lectures. The quizzes were crazy ridiculous. He was humorous at times, but still an ouch to my GPA- I had straight As before this class oof.
Everyone is saying that he is an awful teacher, but I actually enjoy his class. He is funny in his own way and explains concepts that the book doesn't explain very well. The labs are very difficult, but if you try your hardest and work with other people in class, you can get a decent grade. He seems strict at first, but he isn't!
You go to the shedd aquarium and you have to go and buy your own ticket. So if you are broke and work all the time good luck finding time to get that paper done. If you miss an exam and email him about it, he probably wont let you make it up. How he teaches is very poor and scattered minded. One of the worse teachers Ive had.
On many the tests there are questions given that we never went over in class. It is very difficult to learn in this class, he is not very clear on what he wants from us. Study guide for test is not even a study guide, just the outline given at the beginning of the section. It is a struggle to even pass the class.
I am now situated near the area where we did the Ukrainian Field trip. With enough power to charge 4 cell phones and coffee i was well prepared. Now I have Ukranians that treat me like family!! His ties are super cool and he is always avail to let you know what intel he needs. Thanks to Pro Tye I plan to develop the far west loop without gentrefica
This has got to be the worst and most difficult class I have ever taken. I took this class for the credits and due to applying for classes late. At all costs avoid this teacher. HE grades harshly and does not explain the content. He expects you to just understand and gives no help. our "study guide" doesn't help on test because it's not a guide >:(
Worst professor I've ever had. For quizzes he makes you memorize 50 terms, yet there's only 20 on the quiz with no word bank. Tests are confusing and almost impossible to pass. The homework was actually okay. If you want to keep your GPA intact DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Trust me and everyone else.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!! Do not take this class if you dont need it, trust me. I thought this would be an easy A but I was wrong. This teacher goes over so much in class when 90% of it wont even be on the test. Quizzes were ok for me but still difficult to do because you have to memorize so much and get the spelling right. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
This class was truly a wonderful experience. He was a very interesting man, who truly has traveled the whole world. He is very knowledgeable on the subject. The map quizzes are difficult, however he gives you adequate time to prepare. The tests are hard, as they are worded differently than how the material is presented in class.
Due to certain circumstances, our classes were put online and let me say, that was the worst possible thing to happen. It was too late to drop the class but just don't take this class if you wanna keep and alright GPA. There is no communication and very little to learn from. Be expected to just read the textbook and know information. Good luck.
This has to be one of the worst teachers at CLC. I the only thing i learned from taking this class is that Ty Liles has a low IQ (very evident in class) and possibly suffers from some form of brain damage. I highly recommend skipping this class unless you can find another teacher.
He ruined my GPA during my time at CLC. Avoid him if you can - otherwise, get ready for lots of reading and basically teaching yourself the material. Also pay close attention.
He has absolutely no regard for the success of students. And refuses to adapt the class IN ANY WAY to adjust for it being over zoom. It's really difficult to follow with what he's talking about. There's stuff on the quizzes and tests that he's never even talked about- or told us to study. Be prepared to read the book and not be tested on any of it.
I took Mr. Liles way back sometime in 2012-13. He was the reason my GPA got ruined and I thought maybe hes changed since then, but I guess not. (Very disappointing to see/read). Anyway, I wouldnt recommend this professor. Liles is rude, condescending, and doesnt understand or care about his students in the way that a professor should.
I guess its good to see he was a good professor to some people, but disappointed that he hasnt changed. Im genuinely surprised and concerned that he still teaches here, after having him almost a decade ago.
I asked him for some extra help, but he just told me to read the book. Very condescending and never replied to emails! My grade was 79.6, and I asked him if I could receive a round-up. I was .4 off from a B, so I figured I would ask. Never got back to me! The class average for his final exam was 66%, which says something about his teaching methods.
One of the worst professors I have ever had the chance to meet. Even with the grade I got, it seemed like it was a battle each time I took an exam because along comes two essays to write as well that I was never prepared for. Liles is textbook HEAVY! His lectures do not correlate with the exams at all. No homework only tests. Avoid this teacher.
