This guy was very tough, and did not accept my work when I gave my excuses. He is constantly telling me to 'solve the problem' and "that the solution should present itself if I think hard enough". Yeesh. On the positive side, the critique sessions were always very helpful, and Matting my work was expensive, but I always feel really good afterwa
Very helpful teacher. Apparently he has a thing for Dragonforce though. Besides that, i couldnt be happier.
He knows his stuff. He can draw and explain everything clearly.
He is a great techer. Always willing to help. He is sometimes witty. Absolutely recommend his class!
This guy took a bit to get used to. He kept trying to get us to push our concepts. At first, this was hard (I didn;t want to do 40 sketches just to start a project), but later, it made perfect sense. He know graphic, web, seo... Some exercises didn't make full sense at the time, but looking back, it helped my projects a lot. Highly recommend him!
This teacher would not let me breeze through the class. At first, I was angry that he gave me poor grades for poor work. Once I started pushing myself, I got good grades, and great work. This guy was really smart and open to some great design.
He explains everything and gives real life examples as well. Fair, funny, great teacher!
Fair and good teacher!!!
He likes to control the classroom and goes on power trips. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
He is awesome instructor. Explains everything very clear. gives real examples from real world. Its not a class where u just sitting and waiting when its gonna be over.u work hard and enjoy his humor. i would prefer to take other GRD classes with him rather than with another teachers.
He's very helpful. One of the best web teacher in WTCC. he'll help until you get it. he's nice and loves to help his students. His lectures aren't boring bc he teaches it in fun way. good sense of humor. I would love to take him again.
He says graphic design 4 is like getting in a punching bag for 16 weeks. More like running a marathon with the gout while giving birth to twins. Hard, but this class really made my portfolio. I've graduated but would take him again in a heartbeat. Funny and smart
At first this's class was tough. But I busted my butt, and the first project was weak. Teacher let me know why it wasn't the best and gave great suggestions. I reworked it and it was 2 times better. Every project in this class went into my portfolio, and I got a freelance job at the AIGA review!
My graphic dean I class was all collage and color wheels, boring! This class was logos, letterhead, envelope, biz card, shipping labels, package designs, and conceptual posters. Talk about night and day! A whole class of portfolio pieces. He signed me up for some certificate options with the school too. That was nice. Funny. Sometimes.
Sketching every week. People complain about workload, but it's a drawing class and you can't learn to draw without drawing. Do your homework right, participate online, and do your best work . You'll get an a. Miss deadlines and you might pass, but don't count on it. Quizzes from book info but not hard if you read
If you told me that I would go to class once a week and be building multiparty websites in a month I would have laughed. Instructions were clear, had room for creativity, and I was building web pages in a few weeks. 3 multiparty websites built already. Tyler available by phone email office, even met me at the ilc. Really cares
Took this class in his second time teaching this course. Started off rocky, but I really was able to expand into some expansive thought in this course. He helped me think about my final projects, and helped me to get an interview at ECU. Work from this class (10 pieces in a semester, can you believe it?!) fill up my portfolio. hes awesome!
Me Dockery got me an innterview with uncg! My associate transferred almost completely without trouble. He was the best ever- take this class
He pushes hard. It seems tough class. However, thats for you to get a better result. If you love studying graphic design and really want to learn something, take this guy. Otherwise, let your portfolio suffer. One of my all time favorite teachers, but you better be ready to run.
I worked really, really hard in this class, and got a good grade. If I slacked off, he let me know with a lesser grade. Now I bust the buns the whole time and I get great projects. Wish I had him seated
Dockery answered my emails at 11:48pm and we exchanged until 1:25am on a problem project. In 8 weeks I never thought I'd go from NO html knowledge to building a mutlipage website! My husband was so impressed. He is always there for you and even gave out a telephone number. What online teacher does that? Fantastic!
I didn't do too well in the class early on because i had some personal issues. Mr. Dockery took my phone calls and convinced me to stay in the class. He gave me a short message about liking where my work was going and "seeing the oak in the acorn" or something like that. I stayed in and worked extra hard. Now these pieces are my whole portfolio.
Took this class last semester as Adobe Edge. It stunk and I dropped it. This semester, the Multimedia class was taught by Dockery. He taught Adobe Premiere and After Effects in a single semester. Much more fun. He let us rip on him in class with an assignment, and that was a blast. Its fun to hear him talk, but lots of in-class time needed to work.
Course work was really lecture and projects, but the interaction really made it fun. The projects didn't seem so difficult once you got into them, but maybe its me. We did work with premiere and after effects. He let us make fun of him in the assignments and work in the class was really funny. My favorite teacher. Take him again in a heartbeat
This class was about using premiere, but he hardly lectured on it. There were NO LECTURES ON AFTER EFFECTS. Every week was a short lecture followed by a discussion of the project and then we were told to get to work. I taught myself in this class.
This guy took my call at 11:30 at night and didn't hesitate to talk me through the issues until it was resolved. I called him at 10pm the night it was due, and he helped me troubleshoot my code in like 5minutes flat. Funny on the phone, and who's funny at 11pm on sunda?
I thought this guy hated me b/c my work got bad grads. I went to his office mad, and he was really nice. He pointed out how my work wasn't doing enough and was both nice and clear. We talked possible solutions and It was almost the exact thing he said in grade comments. Worst thing was, he wasright. I fixed it and its in my portfolio now. Loved it
I slide through most classes but dockery wouldn't let me. he taught me if I busted my but, I'd get good grades, but research and refinement were critical. Do your best and the class is easy A. I never worked so hard, but I have great pieces and every other class is now a breeze. Take him any chance you get, just don't be lazy.
This class has weekly stages: 1)I can't, not this week 2)I guess I need inspiration 3)This doesn't seem too hard, guess I better start 4)Ok-I'm seriously going to start 5)Oh no. This thing is hard to draw 6)this looks like a thing 7)I might actually pass! 8)If I shade for another hour, this will look real 9)Well, the assignment is due, so I'm done.
I had never taken a drawing class before. I struggled I will admit. Gave no feedback on assignments or how I could improve. He moved quickly and notes and lectures where not clear. I wouldn't recommend him.
I am a straight-A student. I turn in every project on time, and always meet the minimum requirements and go above and beyond. He would never tell us what he wanted us to make. He'd only say start with a good concept, keep working with it, or keep working the problem. I wanted him to tell me what to do and he wouldn't. He was clear about that! Got B
At first I thought this guy was just a big jerk. Never gives an A unless you blow the project out of the water. This was the toughest class I've ever taken, but I learned more in this class than any other to date.
22 people in this class! How can you give precision advice to 22 people? This guy went over my port with a finetoothed comb. He is inspirational, but would not accept some pieces. Everything had to be a campaign or show strong brand understanding. Can't wait to see my final stuff. Everyone I show my work to is impressed. Come on AIGA internship!
For someone to be considered a teacher, he must give adequate feedback and nurturing. There was not any help, feedback or constructive criticism for this to be a foundation level course for the program. I would definitely blame it on his lack of clear feedback. I would NOT recommend him as a professor.
disorganized syllabus with conflicting due dates. Needs to work on specificity and clear, concise, OBJECTIVE, and CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Needs to give better direction for improvement in techniques.
I cant draw. Over the course of 4 months I drew every day. I have a few pieces for my portfolio now! The class was fast, required a lot of work, and grades were tough. I may never be picasso, but I have things to show for my hard work. Not sure what he's like in the design classroom, but cant wait to find out
Online classes are tough-This course required me to push myself and its hard online. Students gave only nice feedback, so I had to ask people in person. Dockery feedback on good projects were extensive with lots of items to change. Feedback on bad designs were short: keep working with it & interesting start but needs work, etc. My designs improved!
Drawing is my thing, and this class was fantastic! We covered standards like landscapes and perspectives, self-portraits and still lives. That said, we also had a few projects with some real teeth like textures and shading with paper bags and soda and some model work. I loved this class, it really let me shine without making demands!
Straight-A student reduced to all-nighters every 2 weeks. Friends? Sleep? Never had time for those. Every design required intense research & no excuses allowed. I'm used to teachers fawning but this guy was cut out of wood. My class blog earned me 2 clients this semester & I expect portfolio will be a breeze after this. This class was intensly cool
Mr. Dockery seems to live at his computer. He allowed me to turn in a late project with grade reduction, but talked me through a tough patch getting on the server. I have never been able to get such one-on one help over the phone. Fantastic.
Easy to contact him by phone or visiting the ILC. Good feedback & classwork goes right in the portfolio. Only problems with this guy: He always has some way to improve your piece even after its done. Has feedback that is very vague: needs more research or font isn't working. I want a teacher who says: "use papyrus" and then gives an a for doing it.
tyler gives few expectations but grades harshly. he seems to be on a power trip and is doing his best to make students drop the class and in turn drop out of school. not organized, not sure if he even plans his lessons. if your work isn't talked about in a critique he will not give you credit even if you did the entire assignment. stay away!
Never had anything like this. Every project is open to interpretation, every one based on the quality produced. I'm not a good drawer & my drawings were immediately rejected However, showed my work to a friend of the family & got a job interview! We did a whole website in a week, a mobile app, packaging projects, & timed work. exhausting & fruitful
You would not be able to tell me that this was a teacher new to capstone courses in 2016. This guy pulled no punches, but every word was aimed either to put you at ease or to put you BACK on the right track. I got hired from our classes AIGA review, and I've already received a raise. Every piece is scrutinized, but every pieces is that important
My online classes have been an exercise in checking boxes, but this guy raked me over the coals! Misspellings? not allowed. Unprofessional text? not allowed. We built a fully functional wordpress website in a week, and I'm no HTML whiz. Required us to blog our results, and my blog with my work got me an internship with UNC-TV! Funny but tough
I have never created films before but he had us interviewing in the first week, cutting splicing transitioning, you name it! we did some lame stuff like powtoons, but the majority of the class was premiere pro and after effects. I made some funny videos and used special effects to be hit by a car on film. For a 2-hour class it was a total breeze.
HTML is clunky, ugly and tough. THis guy, however, made it fun. He allowed me to call him at home, and I talked with him for like 3 hours on a sunday. Definitely saved my bacon and web210 this semester is not so bad. He was really there for me. I can't wait for a class in design with him. Must be a blast
Early classes here were easy- the good work was easy to see and I didn't try that hard. In this class, everybody's work was either fantastic - really driven- or they didn't try. I busted my tail in this class and barely got A's. After making adjustments as suggested, my pieces are awesome, and I still have a month to go! Dockery is the greatest!
Dockery used to drive me crazy. Every piece had to be better, pushed harder, shown in real situations and expanded into a system. Getting a great grade was a part-time job! So many pieces went into my portfolio, and I got great reviews at AIGA! My PDF portfolio got me an interview and my online portfolio website got me hired before I graduated! yea
Knows design inside and out. Meets outside of class hours. Gives thorough, extensive feedback. At first I thought this was because he didn't like me, but the more I listened, the more I learned. Wish he taught more early classes sometimes like Graphic Design I
I met this teacher in the ILC and he's so wonderful. He phrases his questions in such a way that the answer is clear "How would you EDIT this to INSERT a PICTURE?" EDIT Insert PIcture. Everything is ULTRA-clear. He jokes around & cuts the tension & tells me how great I'm doing. He always says I'm doing everything right. Take him if you can!
GRD242 Graphic Design IV was like getting into a punching bag & being slammed by Mr. Dockery for 16 weeks. In the end, my work has never been better. I entered his class as a student sliding by, left his class really getting it. I thought all projects were busywork, but he showed me its all about communication. Now, Im 3x the designer I used to be
Going to miss you so much!! You seriously have pushed me to work outside of the box, brought out the inner designer out of me numerous times and have led me to produce work that I'm inexplicably proud of! The whole GDA program is fantastic, and I've never felt so close with my teacher, even online. You may be my professor but you'r more like family
At the beginning of the semester I hated this guy because he made me do more. He always had tweaks on my work and if I did 1 thing, he wanted 3. By the end of the semester, my work was way way way better than I had produced in any class before. He really pushed me and my work is now prominant in my portfolio. I'd take him again in a heartbeat.
I thought sketches are stupid & 40 a week? Too much. Critique every class? WTH. Now every class I have so much great work and everyone is dragging. Not enough sleep? Cry me a river. I am a design machine and its this guy's fault. At AIGA student review I got an internship!
Portfolio is a 12-week haul. Sleep? what's that? Family, friends? who are they? shower? A reward for closers! Showed up at the 70% point with black and white prints and he ripped me a new one. Corrected the problems- they were legit. at the AIGA review I put 4-year students to shame and got an internship and eventually hired. Dockery Relentless.
I'm good, but this guy's fantastic. He picked my works apart and dug it to the bone. Then helped me as I built them back to expert level. I got both a job offer and an internship offer at AIGA student portfolio review, but apparently still room for improvement in the final review. Never worked so hard in my life. Totally worth it.
It might be hard for you to work a job and keep up with the homework. I was taking 3 classes without working and it was a lot of work. Sometimes 40 sketches would be due on Thursday and you only learn about it that Tuesday. This class pushes you to produce great work for your portfolio class and is necessary. Don't be scared of Tyler, he's nice.
I was told I should fill these out for old teachers so here goes: He didn't give me good grades, but my work wasn't good. He was kind, but graded hard. I had to earn everything, but of all my teachers, he was the one who always said that he believed in me. Even if I failed before, he knew I could do it if I tried.
I don't see what the fuss was all about. He said schedule 20 hours for each week and I did. First project, 12 extra hours and earned a C-. He said do more research, do more refinement, and point taken. Every project I worked the alloted time, and had good grades. Just keep working and expanding on every project, every day, all you will get A's.
There's a method to the madness, just know that. His portfolio class was a non-stop rollercoaster ride of hard work. Projects I was superhappy about were stripped down & rebuilt from the ground up, but are now 10x better. Every project got a beatdown & then encouraging buildup. I've never been so happy. He jokes about a nap to celebrate & I do it 2
Tyler Dockery genuinely cares about the success of his students. He constantly is locating jobs and internships and encourages students to apply to the point of (good) harassment. He is always available and responsive to student's needs. I am so thankful I was able to take Portfolio with him.
Last major course for my degree, Tyler's a great grader if you like paragraphs of text on what he likes on your work, things he doesn't, and things you can work on. He does not sugarcoat it and gives you raw explanations. Funny at times. Has f2f meetings, you can try to bluff ur work but in the end your work will show how and hard u have worked on
This guy hounded me. Work not turned in? I'd getan email. No response to his email? He'd call me at home. Work met the requirements? Only got a C. Feedback was specific and extensive. Wanted 24 pages of design work in 2 weeks, so I skipped some classes. Guess what? Emails, phone calls, TEAMS meetings. I'm on track now but this guy was relentless!
Illustrator was tough. He spent 3 weeks talking about how students drop when they learn the pen tool. So I checked it out online, not that hard. When we covered it in class, everyone was creating silooets of dancers and kung fu by the end of the day. The whole class was like that: Study and listen and you pass. give a project full effort & get A's
This is not an intro class. Teacher expects reading, lectures to be watched, and bookwork weekly. I'm a straight-A student in my HS. When I didn't turn in assignment, I got a zero. What? I should get a 50 for failure. Usually I make up all my work at the end of the school year- not allowed. He doesn't realize people check their email once a week.
I'm rating professors today. Mr. Dockery is personable and fun, but projects demand excellence. Got a C on first project, a 30min exercixe. It was the same as all my old work. Looking at my first big project- that's a portfolio piece! Just wrote a 28page Graphic Standards Manual by hand. That's a portfolio piece! What will the semester bring me nxt
This guy is like a boxing coach always pushing you to your limits. Project feedback was 4+ pages and I got an A! Really encouraging with good advice if you take it. Work hard and you'll do great. Halfa ss your job and you'll get a bad grade. Grade is about what you produce, so you better do your best. Made 4 portfolio campaigns in this class.
He was a difficult teacher to have, even though I was getting A's the feedback did not match the grade. His "criticism" was not encouraging, rather it felt like no matter what I was doing, I wasn't doing them right and he would punch me down further. His assignment specs were not written well and it was hard to know what exactly was expected.
Pretty decent. Gives detailed feedback, which is critical but helpful. Sometimes strict - didn't let me turn in late assignment when I was sick because I "didn't have a doctor's note." But also gave me an A on late assignments before. Easy A class. Not great at outside communication - takes days to respond to email. Better than other GRD profs imo
This terrible teacher preaches one set of values but consistently acts in direct opposition to their own teachings. Their words and actions are in constant conflict, leaving students bewildered and unsure of what to believe. This teacher's double standards and lack of integrity create an atmosphere of confusion and distrust.
I took this class with Mr. Dockery last year. He will give you honest feedback and sometimes appears insensitive, but I found his feedback to be valuable. If you don't understand his feedback he will take time to discuss it with you. He is fun and finds it easy to get the class laughing. He's difficult but wants you to be successful.
In this class you're expected to be self-sufficient but Mr. Dockery makes sure you are keeping up. He will give you detailed feedback on your campaigns, ensuring that you know how to make them better. He's tough, especially in this class, but really wants you to have an exceptional portfolio. One of the best professors I've had.
Overall more caring to students who are willing to destroy their lives and health in-order to finish their classes. If you have any health conditions think twice. Please.
As online student I'm used to being alone, but he answer his phone at 11pm & was happy to walk me through technical issue. Work should be based on research, but I lied the results, & he ripped me up for choosing poor designs. Just do what you're asked & pass. The less I worried about requirements & focused on good work, the better my grades got.
This was the only professor who told me my work looked bad. Ever. I was mad but he was right. I tried harder and now all I get is a few lines like "great work, Sam!" I keep looking for Mr. Dockery's 5 paragraphs of room for improvement, but most teachers don't have much to say in comparison.
Professor Dockery was really great. He is a very tough grader at times, but he explains things well. Also if you need assistance he will take time to work with you, but can be slow at responding - so keep that in mind.
Amazing! Went out of his way to help me with my podcast for English. :)
Prof. Dockery gives a lot of constructive criticism, but if you don't take it personally, you can learn and grow a lot from it! This was one of my first design courses, and it was intense and definitely time-consuming, laborious work, but well worth it. He has strict grading criteria's, so make sure to really read the requirements and the rubric
Professor Dockery was not professional in critiques in this low level class. He expected a high level of mastery in a low level class. He would critique work with words like "horsey" when talking about the type chosen. He would also say minor mistakes could cost us 5-10k out in the job field.
He actually taught my Drawing Fundamentals I class (which wasn't an option up here). First I would like to say that I already have a Bachelor's Degree, and I've been in school before and excelled. This was the WORST instructor I have EVER had. his critiques were confusing and just harsh.
DO NOT TAKE.He tells you what to do, and when you follow his instructions you're wrong and get penalized. Hes on a power trip. Either do the work the way he would do it or you get a bad grade. Never did I receive any kind of feedback on projects submitted other than it was wrong and received a 0. He wants you to fail or drop the class.
I had a family tragedy and this guy took my calls at night, gave teams video sessions, and pushed me to continue. This was the hardest semester of my life, but he allowed me to "escape into the work". I'm not getting an A but I'm more focused.
People need to stop whining. This guy is tough, but a sword doesn't get sharp by wanting to be sharp. Everytime I do a project, he tells me how to improve. Guess what? If you listen you get better. People keep saying their gonna burn him here. So what? Who reads this? Want to Get Gud? Take the feedback and get better.
I came into it with 0 exp in InDesign, and as I finish out my final project I feel 100x more confident. Dockery's feedback pushes you to be a detail oriented designer. He is blount, but there are rules in design whether we like it or not! Dockery pushes you to be better, to not make minor mistakes that can cost you precious time and money.
Tyler Dockery bullies students with learning disabilities. He shared my email asking for help with the class and treated me like I was dumb for asking questions. He talked down to me and was very belittling.
Good guy, listens to my problems. Called late at night to get help, he walked me through the process and cleared stuff up so fast. I was bummed about web stuff and he was at the computer center and explained CSS and HTML to me. He grades tough, but that's OK. It's my job when I'm done with school and I want to be the best.
I didn't read the Illustrator book after chapter 2. I went to the midterm and bombed it. I talked to this guy in the tutoring center and he showed me how to research better, how to sketch different ideas, and how to get a real project started. I saw him 12 times over 10 weeks and I really improved. This guy grades hard, tons of feedback, and cares.
What a bunch of whiners. The class is tough. Yes, I failed it the first time because I didn't listen. Ms. Osborne said nice things so I took it again. If you just listen to what you're asked to do and literally "do you best" you can not only pass, but make great work. Didn't get an A but really learned a lot. Don't whine. Change. Try hard.
This guy is a cartoon. Wears the same outfit, tells the same jokes, grades harder than anyone. Took the class & failed. Took the class & withdrew. Always told me to do more, work harder, compare my work to the best examples. 3rd times a charm. Did more research. Compared my work and improved. It wasn't easy, but just do what he says. You'll do well
i wish i knew when he said "Interesting start" he really meant "You didn't try hard enough". if i knew "Needs more time and effort", meant "you wouldn't get hired", id have changed sooner. i went for an internship with photoshop, canva, and indesign classes done, and interviewer said nomy work was rushed and needed time. i wish id known and listend
This class was composed of reading the text and watching a variety of videos - no direct lecture material from the instructor. Guidelines for assignments were somewhat vague, and while he was quick to reply to emails, he wanted questions submitted very early into the project. I think he would be better in person.
I came from a 4-year school of journalism. I know graphic design. This guy called me out for sloppy work, but then sat down and listened to my complaint. He showed me current examples and told me matter-of-fact that I just wasn't cutting mustard. I was mad, but he was right. He taught us to research and now I do that kind every time. And hes funny
Feedback is kinda dull and some of the assignment instructions aren't clear.
He got a heart like a 16# hammer. Asked if I could miss an assignment, he said I had 1.5 weeks of absences allowed but wen I got back from vacation I had 00s for projects when I was absent. Projects just got harder instead of easier, and feedback was all about improving with tools.Missed another deadline & flunked the midterm. I dropped this BS.
Mr. Dockery talks about how hard some tools are, but if you read the book, learning is easy. Projects are fun, but I need to do more research if I'm expected to do this level of work every semester. He pushed me to do more even though other students said I was already good. A fun experience.
Dockery is one of the best professors. His class is extremely easy with 3 big assignments and mostly student discussion boards. Looking for an excellent portfolio? TAKE THIS CLASS. He responds to emails quickly and gives opportunities to enhance your major assignments. He is kind and looks over your work every time. Lots of laser precise feedback!
Oh my mother loving god, if I knew he was going to be my professor after the first year at wake tech, I would have dropped the class. Feedback no matter how bad the work is should be given with respect. He always used the phrase “this will hurt you” and I hated it. Instructions are never clear and when asked to specify did a sucky job.
At first I thought he wasn't listening cause I'd never touched this program. He pushed me to do better work and would not accept weak solutions. He gave poor grades for mediocre work, and I just had to work harder. Minimum requirements meant you got a 70 for "meets the minimum requirements". I just had to step up my game, and I'm so glad I did!
What's the big deal? I've red these reviews and the guy was way easier than my first boss. He gives you feedback, and you just put your ego aside and make changes. How hard was it to just do what he said? Not that hard. He asked me point blank if I had made the changes he suggested, and was disappointed when I said not yet. It never happend again!
I liked the communication from Tyler. I'm an online student & he made sure that we were kept informed of current and upcoming assignments. He took time to make sure that expectations were clear and was quick to respond to my emails. I was unsure of his directness at first, but I grew to respect it as his best interest was pushing me to do my best.
The assignments were appropriate in difficulty and helped me build my skills over time. The work was challenging enough to be engaging, but also spread out enough not to be stressful. Mr. Dockery was always quick to answer any email queries that I had. I felt supported in the fact that I knew he would respond.
Didn't know how hard a portfolio class would be. All projects were done, so why care? Dockery met before the semester on TEAMS, met in the first week of class, and made me write a contract of what I'd show. Needed 28 hours each week and I barely passed with C-. Professionals tore me apart but students were nice. Follow teacher's advice or lose out!
Dockery is the Godzilla of the comeup. I was so lucky! I left with posters for my portfolio and a portfolio piece I can work with using a logo, business card, and vehicle wrap. I dint try hard on all projects but I tried. Loved the "show us your work" atmosphere and bouncing ideas off others. Funny, good feedback, answers emails, lets you in early.
This online guy was awesome. Took my email request for meetings late and walked me through projects.Instructions were clear but I bombed the first assignment because i didnt think it mattered. He showed me some student work from the past and I fell in line.If i want to be good, I needed to really be good. This class showed me that.
Met dockery in his office because i was afraid people would make fun of me. We talked about my found type assignment & how to set up my phone as a camera. it made me confident. When presenting my triangles to the class in another class, he gave me such positive remarks that i just glowed! He really made me feel my effort is worth it so i won't stop
